A contemporary foodie romance .

My Thoughts:

I can’t wait for this book.  I have never been disappointed in a book by Taryn.  She brings sizzling heat to every story she tells.  Since this one actually has to do with cooking, I am sure it will be extremely hot in more ways than one.

Congratulations, Taryn! I love this cover.

Derek Dunne is a Cordon Bleu-trained food critic for the prestigious New York Monitor, whose scathing review of a popular Italian bistro has driven away all but the most loyal neighborhood patrons.

Lucrezia Serafina DiCicco is a clumsy business school drop-out, working as a chef and scrambling to keep her family’s restaurant afloat, after her father develops diabetes and is banned from his kitchen for his own good.

Now, with The Monitor folding, Derek is searching for his next career path and longing to get back to his first love—cooking—while Lu is desperate for an influx of cash to save the struggling restaurant…even as her father puts his foot down about non-family employees.

Derek and Lu embark on a marriage of inconvenience to save the restaurant. But can Lu ever really trust the man who nearly destroyed her family, once noted her initials spelled “LSD,” and her food was like a “bad trip?”

Or will it be their hearts on the chopping block?

Review of Bad Traveler by Lola Karns

Bad Traveler

Author: Lola Karns
Published by: Decadent Publishing, LLC
Release date: 8/19/2014

This book was a gift from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Recipes are a way of life for Gwen Jones. Take one single mother, her infant daughter and a business plan for a small town bakery. Combine with an eventful cross-country flight, chance encounter with her college crush and a dash of motion sickness. Stir in a few nuts, or family members, and large quantities of chocolate. Will this recipe be an oven oops, or as delicious as her alma mater’s newest coach?  Having survived an attack in Afghanistan that cost him a leg and a wife, Kyle Collins developed a strategy to find meaning in life. He may be an assistant basketball coach but he refuses to sit on the sidelines. When he runs into the woman whose lips are as unforgettable as her brownies, Kyle decides to spice up Gwen’s recipes.  When a secret ingredient is thrown into the mix, can their recipe for a happily-ever-after rise to the occasion, or will it end up a hot mess?

My Review:

Bad Traveler describes Gwen Jones to a tee.  She doesn’t do well flying but she does her share in this eventful book. All in the name of love.

As a single parent all Gwen wants is to be a good mother to her daughter. She is accomplishing this by moving back home and starting a new bakery/coffee shop business.

As anyone with children knows, air travel with a six month old is a challenge. A chance meeting with a college friend Kyle Collins in the airport turns into a travel blessing.  Kyle is returning to be an assistant coach at the university.

Met at the airport by her Mom, the scene that made me laugh as much as it annoyed Gwen, occurred in the parking garage.
Charlotte drives a Mini.  This is the scene with the three of them.

“Mo-ooom, why didn’t you bring Dad’s car?”

“I don’t like to drive it, dear. It’s too big.”

“It’s a Honda Accord. It’s not that big.” There was a sharpness to her voice that he hadn’t heard before. Her mother’s eyes widened, aghast.

Gwen shook her head and rubbed her temples. “Sorry, I’m really tired. It’s been a long day. I’m just not sure the seat will fit rear-facing in this car.”

He surveyed the Mini and compared it to the pieces of luggage piled around. He hoped to avoid further conflict between the two. Gwen had had a rough day. His car was nearby and, besides, he wasn’t ready to say good-bye. Charlotte took charge.

“We can try putting the car seat in the back. Once that’s in, we can stack everything else around it. There’s a lot of room on the floor.”

He doubted anything would fit in the tiny car unless he played origami with the seats.

Surrounded by her family who loves them both helps the transition. Reuniting with Kyle adds the possibility of very steamy romance.

Trouble begins to brew when Gwen’s ex-boyfriend Chloe’s father comes to town unexpectedly and unwanted.

Lola Karns’ way with words is such that you feel every emotion fly  off the page.  I laughed, cried and held my breath a few times as well.

Well written and a great read.

I give this book 5 contented purrs.
