Blurb from Amazon:

“What fate would you choose?”
Just when it seems she’s finally moved on from one of the most difficult times in her life, devastation rocks Sophie Ryan’s world again.
When long buried demons from her troubled past resurface, Sophie is forced to face her darkest fears, questioning everything she once thought was real.
Will she be able to return to the path she once traveled? Will she turn back on the promises she’s made in the past? Or will she be confronted with the harsh truth that every decision, every choice, has a consequence?
When life thrusts a path in your direction, what fate will you choose?

My Review:

At the end of The Promise, Ana and Drake are on the outs as is Sophie and Chase except for a brief phone call.

This book opens with Drake telling Sophie his cousin Chase has been in an accident and “they don’t know if he is going to make it.”  Sophie flashes back to when Ana and her were notified of Jack’s death and collapses.   Drake supports her and she they both head for the hospital.

Seventeen hours later Chase wakes up.  Considering the trauma and surgery he has undergone he appears very lucid.  Sophie and Chase have a brief talk before he is taken for more testing.

In the meantime Ana and Drake get back together as well so everything seems back on track.  But let’s not get hasty here, this is the beginning of the book.

Here in the hospital when the doctor is evaluating Chase for discharge is one of my favorite scenes. Sophie comes out of the bathroom after changing her clothes while the doctor is speaking.

“Well my boy, if you’re feeling good enough for that I’d say you’re good to go home,” I hear him chuckle as my eyes meet Chase’s.

“Oh my God, Chase! You told them we had sex in here?” I blurt out loud enough for everyone in the room to hear before thinking, clamping my hand over my mouth seconds too late.”

Ana has decided to move in with Drake and Sophie makes her decision to move in with Chase although she won’t say yes to his marriage proposal.

Emily (Chase’s sister) is getting married right after Thanksgiving so before they all head to Florida the girls decide to have a night out. When Drake sees how Ana has dressed for the evening he protests until she changes. Funny how when they arrive at Chase and Sophie’s, Chase is having the same problem with Sophie.  By the time Heather arrives it is a full blown battle of wills between those two. I was chuckling the whole time.

That evening doesn’t end well.

The wedding goes off with only a slight musical issue and Chase surprises Sophie with a side trip before they head home.

A fight with Sophie’s boss, then with Drake and Ana. Total Chaos. Drake and Chase are fine but Ana and Sophie aren’t talking.  Next up is trip to Lucy’s (Ana’s cousin) for her son (Sophie’s Godson) JT’s birthday party. Where another major surprise awaits.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before but these two couples sizzle off the page, the sex is passionate and downright steamy.  I still don’t like the whole cliff hanger endings but I will deal since the story line is good.

I give 4 contented purrs for this book, but once again the editing gets a hiss.

Here are some of the editing errors that made me crazy.

“I had the CD player lying next to me on the cot the nurses had brought me in.”

“Her freshly painted toes were peeking out of strappy black hills that made her legs look a mile long.”

” I can’t help but notice when my heart skipping a beat.”

The Promise Series by Kate Benson – My Review of The Promise – Books 1

The Promise Series by Kate Benson

Just a little note here.  I started this series with the latest one The Commitment and that was a big mistake.  I am rectifying that error now.  I purchased the first three from Amazon for my Kindle and I am reviewing them here and revising my review of that latest installment in the series, based on reading order.

I will be putting these up one at a time because these books flow into one another and I don’t want to spoil one.

The Promise – Book 1 of the Promise Series

the promise cover

December 5, 2013

Blurb from Amazon:

Devastated by circumstances beyond her control, Sophie Ryan’s life rips her from the arms of her first love, Jack. With only memories of their lost love, she’s forced to start over in a new town; surviving on her own for the first time since he left. Trying to begin her new life, fate decides a different direction for her, causing her to make a choice she never thought she’d have to.
Unsure of commitment after his failed engagement, Chase Mitchell finds himself stuck on a path of failed conquests and late nights at the bar. That is until he finds a pair of mesmerizing green eyes sitting in his usual spot. Something about this quiet girl forces him to question everything he has ever thought about love.
As Sophie looks down at the fork that’s presented in her path, will she choose the right direction? Will she be able to move towards the arms of the man who stands in front of her? Or will she choose to keep her promise to the one life forced her to leave behind?

My Review:

Ana and Sophie have reached the decision to leave their hometown and Ana’s childhood home.  This is an attempt at moving on after Ana’s brother and Sophie’s fiancé Jack died in Afghanistan.  That doesn’t mean that saying goodbye is going to be easy. I started sniffling as Sophie visits all the special spots she and Jack had around town and downright sobbed when she reached the cemetery.   When she screams in her sleep, I continued to sob even as I read Ana waking her up.

We learn a lot about Jack through memory & dream sequences from Sophie, throughout the book.

Ana meets Drake Mitchell by bumping into him literally (not with her car) at a gas station, and Chase Mitchell (his cousin) sees the woman of his dreams singing in a pickup truck shortly after this encounter.

When Chase and Drake get off work they head to their favorite bar for a couple of beers before heading home.  Imagine Chase’s surprise when he gets to save the “woman of his dreams” (Sophie)from being hit on by a nasty drunk and Drake’s surprise to find that Ana is the new bartender.

Getting to know Sophie isn’t an easy thing to do. The walls she has erected are hard to penetrate but Chase is determined.  Drake and Ana have hit it off well and since Sophie is Ana’s roommate the possibility of meeting up frequently is definitely in the cards.

Ana and Drake get off to a very steamy start, with panty melting scenes almost from the start.  Chase on the other hand has to go slow with Sophie.

One of my favorite scenes is the morning after Chase and Sophie’s first date which ended with just a kiss.  Drake has spent the night with Ana and the three of them are in the kitchen. Ana and Sophie in robes and Drake in just a towel.

Sophie’s POV

“Knock, knock!”  I hear Chase’s booming voice traveling through the apartment.  “Sorry, the door was open so I just let ,,,” He stops dead in his racks when he sees the three of us in the kitchen, all of us silent and gripping our coffee mugs.  I turn to see his eyes on Drake’s towel.  “Why is everyone naked in your kitchen, Sophie?”

Chase and Sophie have a rough time of becoming a couple, first by her not being open about Jack and then with Lauren ( Chase’s ex )doing as much as she can to break them up.

I laughed a lot and cried a lot. Wanted to smack all the characters at least once during this read. Although it is a cliff-hanger I don’t mind so much since I already have the next three books.

Aside from some editing errors, wrong tense, the occasional letter just hanging out by itself and what may be format conversion issues, really enjoyed this read.

I give this book 5 contented purrs for content and 1 hiss for editing.

My Review:

This is Sophie and Chase’s story and it has quite of few bumps in the road.

I was a bit startled that this book starts with a bit of a mystery. Two pregnancy tests in the office bathroom, one positive, sends Chase and Drake (Chase’s cousin) on the run after Sophie and Ana (Jack’s sister).

The women are running out after getting a call to collect JT Sophie’s godson.  Lucy is JT’s mother and has passed away from overconsumption of alcohol.  This is the first point where I get confused, and I’m not sure of her relationship to the others.

Sophie is a bit volatile in her emotions.  So it was quite interesting to see the trouble and sometimes hilarity she causes by blurting her feelings out.  No filter there.

As Sophie prepares for her wedding, an interesting fact about Ana and Drake’s relationship other than the fact they are engaged is revealed.

With regard to Jack and Sophie, they were obviously together at one point and still sincerely care a lot for each other.  I found myself with many questions about them.

The lives of the characters are so intricately woven that it took a bit to figure out the who’s who. This is made a bit easier by each chapter being in the POV of a specific character but I’m not sure I have the all relationships correct.

The couples in this book have intense relationships and the sex is hotter than hot.

Since I have so many questions about the characters, in spite of my enjoyment of the book, I have purchased the first three books of this series to get a better understanding of the all the stories.

I do not recommend this book as a starting point for the series.  It really is not a standalone.

I give this book 3 contented purrs.  I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the series in order.

Addiction-sm

Blurb

Despite denying their love for years, in the end no distraction could keep best friends Tristan and Elle apart. Passion and heat explode as the two finally discover what they’ve been missing, needing, wanting for so long.

When Tristan and Elle return home for Christmas break, the two are gifted with a few unexpected surprises. Heather, Elle’s sister, has come home and even better, she’s now clean and sober. During this time, Tristan and his dad manage to work through their strained relationship, finding compromise and understanding. For the couple, everything is coming together—until circumstances change, threatening their newfound happiness.

Love is an addiction both craved, but when devastating secrets are revealed, Elle pushes Tristan away. He won’t let go. She can’t hold on. Is their love strong enough to keep them together? Falling in love was never an issue, but for Tristan and Elle, falling apart may be.
Addiction is a new adult/college romance short novel.

My Review

While Addiction centers on their families accepting their relationship, Elle and Tristan have so much to overcome in this book.

There is steamy, hot sex and love and laughter.  However there is also the reminder of the pain of divorce when parents don’t communicate with their children.

With Heather’s appearance we also see the pain and heartache caused by addiction.

There are also secrets and lies of omission, one of which could very well mean the end of a beautiful relationship for Tristan and Elle.

One of my favorite scenes is the morning after Tristan sneaks into Elle’s bedroom, through the window, of course. Elle’s Mom has a few words for Elle.

Even though I was an adult, Tristan escaping before my Mom caught him in here made me breathe easier.

She tilted her head. “Tell Tristan next time he leaves this house, it better be through my front door. Which is how he should’ve come in. Not the window. Understood?”

Sheer humiliation covered my face. I could only nod.

“Good.”

Angela hits home with so many issues in this book.  She has an amazing grasp of expressing those feelings in her books.

Five contented purrs for this book.  I cannot wait for the next installment in this series.

Tristan Quotes/Teasers
I’d like to say I love you and mean it. Only, that isn’t enough to describe what I feel for you… how much you mean to me, Elle.”

“Water’s boring.” Elle traced a finger along my jaw, her passion-filled eyes trained on my lips. “I’m not looking for boring tonight.”

The anticipation of wanting her jumped to fucking needing her as she rolled her hips into the pressure against my zipper. “What is it you’re looking for?”

Elle bent forward, lips teasing mine, and whispered, “You.”

Elle Quotes/Teasers
I didn’t think I could fall more in love with you, but you’ve proven me wrong, Tristan Wade Daniels. I love you.”

His lips curved into a wide smile. “Say it again.”

I stepped on my tiptoes and leaned in, my lips a breath away from touching his. I whispered, “I love the way my body craves more of you. I love the way your hands feel while touching me. I love the way your lips taste…”

My eyes darted to his lips, and then back to his eyes.

“I love how much you care. I don’t just love you, but everything about you. I always have, Tristan. I always will.”

“He looked up and our gazes met. He was a beautiful mess, and I loved him so much, but the pain he created… well, I didn’t think I’d recover.”

6c3a6-newexcerpt

We didn’t talk much during the drive back to our hometown, but words weren’t necessary. The soft smile on Tristan’s face as he drove with his left hand while holding mine in his right screamed louder than any words ever could. He was mine.
Turning to watch the scenery pass by, I let my thoughts drift back to the start of this year. At the beginning of the semester when Tristan told me about his engagement to Kellie, the psycho, I couldn’t breathe from the disappointment crushing my chest. Topping that, he also divulged he’d transferred to Tech, making sure my life remained as miserable as possible. Even though I loved him, seeing Tristan with another woman tore me to pieces.
Before their relationship ended, thinking we’d ever find our way to one another seemed impossible. So, what did I do to get over my hot, football star, best friend? I dated someone completely opposite of Tristan… Eric Green, a handsome baseball player. Eric was super sweet, but at the end of the day he was never who I wanted.
I didn’t intentionally set out to hurt anyone. The way I strung Eric along, knowing I was in love with someone else, left me feeling like a self-centered jerk. Ironically, when Tristan was injured, our relationship started to come together for us while Eric and I fell apart.
Who’d have thought a broken collarbone and a concussion would’ve made us get our heads removed from our asses. But God, the brunt trauma Tristan suffered was bad. Just thinking about it brought tears to my eyes. I shifted in my seat, removing myself from the past, looking forward to our future.
Peeking over at Tristan’s profile, my chest tightened. The fact that he was able to pull off looking so incredibly sexy that early in the morning awed me. The gritty stubble shadowing his strong jawline and the way strands of hair framed his warm eyes quickened my pulse.
Tristan glanced my way and grinned. Lifting our hands, he brushed a feathery kiss across my skin. “What’s got you so quiet, Spud?”
My knuckles tingled where his lips touched. “Oh, you.”
His smile deepened. “Well, then carry on.”
I fought to keep my eyes open during the rest of our drive. Tristan ran his finger along my cheek, the enamored glint in his eyes made my insides jump.
“You look tired. Get some sleep.” Those perfect, full, kissable lips formed into a sexy, hell-bent grin. “You’re going to need plenty of rest.”
He tore his eyes away from me and back to the road. Sliding the back of his hand down my arm, he then laced our fingers together. “We’re leaving after dinner tomorrow. We haven’t finished making up for,” he turned back to me and winked, “lost time yet.” Tristan squeezed our hands, sending the normal thumping inside my chest into hyper-drive.
I stretched out the soreness from my arms and legs. After the early morning surprise in bed, we woke up and finished another round of lovemaking in the shower. Years of listening to Alyssa prattle on and on about her sexual escapades, I finally understood her, um, enthusiasm. Speaking of which, she was going to flip the next time I talked to her. Man, I missed our late night, or morning talks, although being with Tristan felt right. Perfect.
Tension pulled at the corners of his eyes.
I squeezed his hand. “Hey, what’s wrong?” I balled my other hand, worry settling in my shoulders.
He brought our joined hands to his lips and kissed the inside of my wrist. “Nothing you need to worry about.”
Um, I don’t think so. I attempted to free my hand from his, but his hold remained strong. I gave up. “I can take it, whatever it is. Just spit it out.” My stomached knotted, betraying the lie.
“I’m telling my parents about us.” He glanced down, and the tension cornering his eyes moments ago fell. The side of his mouth pulled up in a cocky grin. “I’m almost hoping my dad kicks me out.” He winked. “Then I’d have an excuse to stay with you.”
I frowned and pulled my bottom lip between my teeth. Shit. His dad hated me. As much as I loved Tristan, I didn’t want to be an added cause to their problems, especially since Tristan and his dad never got along in the first place.
I shook my head. “No, I don’t want to ruin this. We’re together so there’s no use in creating a potential problem between you and your family. I love you, Tristan. I’m not going anywhere. Spend time with your parents and we can tell them about us once we’re back at school.”
Tristan gazed ahead, concentrating on the road in front of us. He remained silent for quite a few minutes, making me worry my bottom lip even more. Finally, he glanced over at me.
“No, I’ve waited to tell them you were mine for years now. No way am I going to pass up the first chance I get in order to make my dad happy.”
I opened my mouth to argue, but he cut me off.
“I’m not playin’, Spud.” His eyes darkened and wrinkles crested his forehead.
Stubborn ass. “All right, fine. I’ll leave my window unlocked,” I grinned, raising a brow, “but only if you’re lucky.”
Tristan chuckled softly, resting our hands in his lap. With his attention back to the road, I closed my eyes and prayed nothing terrible would happen between him and his dad. I used to think Mrs. Daniels didn’t approve of me, but after Tristan’s stay in the hospital, her behavior had changed. She’d been nice. Maybe his dad would do the same.
My throat dried–this time from not knowing if I’d be able to see my sister, Heather, this year. Hopefully this Christmas would be different for both our families. Tristan and I were due for a little peace.
Losing the battle with my eyes, I ended up falling asleep the rest of our way home. Tristan reluctantly dropped me off at my mom’s house. Once my bags were unloaded in my room, he kissed me. His kiss lingered, making my legs weak and my heart ache when the sweet embrace ended. Intensity and heat blazed in his eyes when he backed away.
Clearing his throat, he said, “I’m having a hard time leaving you.”

Synopsis:

Aside from the normal changes in her life, college junior Elle Richards can always count on her friendship with Tristan. The longing for him to love her back is something she keeps well hidden, even from herself. No matter how many miles apart they are, regular phone calls and texts keep them close…until the day everything changes.

Wide Receiver Tristan Daniels has a good thing going. Much to his, and every single woman’s surprise, he’s in a committed relationship. The possibility of going pro looks more than promising…until his spur of the moment transfer to a rival college is approved. Now, Tristan will be forced to be in the presence of the woman he’s secretly loved for as long as he can remember. Elle.

Being away from one another was enough to keep Tristan and Elle distracted, but angst, confusion, and troubled secrets launch them into a breathless, heart pumping story you won’t want to miss!

My Review:

Young love just isn’t what it used to be or maybe it is. How can two people live half their lives ignoring the fact they were meant to be together? Well, Tristan and Elle have this down to a science at least until Tristan transfers to the same college.

Tristan is engaged to Kellie and Elle is trying to be in a relationship with Eric, a baseball player. Needless to say seeing each other daily creates stress and problems with their current love interests.

Add into this Elle’s sister Heather, who has been in a downward spiral, is ignoring her calls and texts. Elle is still worried, in spite of her mothers assurance that Heather is fine, and they have spoken several times.

Kellie has secrets she is keeping from Tristan that could end their relationship, although she doesn’t see it that way. Eric is falling hard and fast into love with Elle. Elle doesn’t know what she really wants, but in her heart of hearts she knows it’s Tristan she loves. Tristen has always loved Elle and trying to be the loving fiancé to Kellie becomes harder and harder.

Tristen joins the Frat that his team members are a part of and coincidentally Eric is also a member. One of my favorite scenes is when Tristen asks Elle to help him with picking out a tux for his engagement party.

“Come here before you strangle yourself.”

Tristen shuffled over to me. I lifted the collar of his shirt, readjusting the tie.

“So what do you say? I don’t think I can go through with this if I don’t have you there with me.”

I looked up into his serious, warm honey eyes.

My answer came without effort. “Sure.” From the corner of my eye I noticed Kellie and her friends walking into the store. After adjusting Tristen’s tie, I leaned in close to his ear and whispered, “Just promise that I get to pick out my own dress. I’ve got this killer black strapless number I’m dying to wear. We’ll look perfect together.” I hadn’t meant to throw in the last part. It just slipped out, but I got the reaction I hoped for from Kellie.

“Would y’all like a room?” Kellie’s hardened tome made me smile. Simply put, I couldn’t stand her, she being the sole source behind me and Tristan’s strangled friendship. Until I met her, I usually shied away from confrontation, but not anymore.

I opened my mouth, ready to smart off but Tristan beat me to the chance.

“Sure, you paying,” he countered, turning to look in the mirror at my handy work. I held back from laughing. Knowing nothing good could come out of me sticking around, I decided to leave before any other heated words could take place.

“I’ve got to go but thanks for asking me to be with you.” I finished with a peck to his cheek then turned to his fuming fiancée. “Kellie, as always, a pleasure.” I smiled as I walked past her and her shocked-faced friends.

Angela you have struck into the heart of young romance, I enjoyed every page turning moment.

Five Contented Purrs for this book.

Cover Reveal!! Cassandra Carr’s – Melting into You – Release Date: 4/14/2015

Melting Into You Blurb:

Seth Mason’s life as a macaroni and cheese food truck owner in Austin, Texas, is pretty good, except for one thing: he’d like to find a man to share that life with. As part of an organization Seth founded, he donates leftovers to the local homeless shelter, and meets Ben, a new employee. He’s a preppy guy, and very much not Seth’s usual type, but the attraction is strong and not going away.

Ben’s just moved to Austin from Connecticut to take a job as a case manager at the Austin City Mission, the first time he’s left home and family. But only a short time after he starts work, he meets a man who, though he looks like an extra in a surfing movie, intrigues him. He’s hardly seen what life in Austin has to offer, and yet finds he wants to discover that with Seth’s help.

The passion burns hot between them–hotter even than Austin in the dog days of summer, and neither man can deny it. As they grow closer, both must decide if they have the necessary ingredients for lasting love, or if the relationship will go up in smoke.
