Title: Fevered Hearts
Author: Em Petrova
Publisher: Samhain
 Release Date: March 31, 2015

Synopsis

When faced with a challenge, it’s best to pool your resources.

Liam Mattson used to play his wife’s body like a fine violin. Until a logging accident dampened his fine motor skills and rendered his legs—and the most important part of his below-the-waist playground—useless.

If only Liam would throw himself into therapy with the same vigor he used to throw her into bed, Ivy is sure he’d fully recover. But lately she’s felt adrift, while he’s stuck in self-pity and pre-occupation with a serious threat to his logging business.

When Ward Bose returns from the backwoods, Liam isn’t blind to the heated, guilty glances between his best friend and his wife. And he takes a step he never could have taken if his legs were working—ask Ward to service Ivy in bed.

The moment the three come together, Ward’s heartstrings are tied in knots, and Liam holds them in his fist. But secrets they’re each keeping could tear them all apart…unless they can find a way to share their burdens as easily as they share their love.

My Review
Once again Em Petrova has held me captive in a story.  This one not only revolves around two friends, Ward and Liam, and Liam’s wife Ivy, but their businesses as well.  When Ward and Liam reunite they are still keeping secrets. Their respective businesses are being attacked by Environmentalists against the harvesting of trees.  Although the replanting should have happened and they are working to correct that.  They find the threats escalating as they all get closer…and I do mean closer, they haven’t told Ivy anything, not personal or business related and this had me biting my nails.  Surely grown men can communicate with an intelligent woman.
One of my favorite scenes is between Liam and Wade as they contemplate merging businesses.
“Just that one?”
The teasing note captured Ward all over again. Fuck, he’d fall for this man time and again if only to hear that intimacy in Liam’s voice.

Ward huffed out a laugh to cover his overwhelming want. “Shut up, ass. I was thinking that you have problems here at Mattson and Bose Timber has problems too. What if we combine them?”

Liam shook his head. “What are you talking about? Making our problems bigger is what it sounds like.”

“I’m talking about throwing everything into a pot and stirring it together. It makes sense. I need help in the office, you’re in the office. I need to fulfill contracts, you need the contracts.”

“How the hell would that work?”

“A merger. We work together. We don’t make any legal changes, but we start a sort of co-op. Lean on each other.”

Liam scuffed his knuckles over his jaw, and the rasping sound raised every hair on Ward’s body. “And we take on each other’s problems too.”

“That’s right. Such as the planting problem.”

“And the wife problem.” Liam’s words were solemn.

Ward jerked. “What do you mean?”

“I mean,” Liam said slowly, a far-off expression claiming his rugged features, “that I have a wife who needs to be satisfied, and you have a cock that works. Until I get mine in working order again—if I can, that is—we’d form a merger.”

Ward shoved his chair back so quickly that it shot into the wall. “What are you fucking saying?”

Liam relaxed back in his wheelchair, looking more comfortable than Ward had seen since returning home. “I want you to make love to my wife, Ward. Show her that she’s beautiful and sexy and important.”

“It will make her feel important for her husband to give her to another man?” Ward’s mind spun, and he wondered if he’d really been the one to take a blow to the head, not Liam.

But the thought of touching Ivy’s sweet little curves, of tilting her face up and staring into her eyes before kissing her tender lips, did things to Ward’s insides that he couldn’t begin to name.

“By giving her pleasure through you, it would show I care, yes.”

Ward smacked a palm off the desk. “You can’t mean it. You’re high on painkillers, aren’t you?”

Liam folded forward and dissolved into laughter. “No. I’m dead serious, man. I’m asking you for help in satisfying my wife until I can take over.”

“Why don’t you do the things you can to make her happy and give her pleasure? Finger her, lick her pussy. Hell, compliment her on those gorgeous legs.”

Nodding, Liam seemed to contemplate what he was saying. “I can do that. And I will.

But I need some time to get back into the game. In the meantime…”

“Ivy would never go for something as screwed up as this.”

Liam placed his hand over Ward’s, meeting his gaze. “She will. I’ve seen the way she looks at you.”

“What way is that?” Ward’s stomach rose and fell twenty stories in a matter of seconds.

Turning Ward’s hand over, Liam threaded their fingers. The warmth of the caress, the gesture itself, was Ward’s undoing. “She looks at you the same way I do.”

Something has to give but who and/or what.

Five contented purrs for Em!!

I really want more loggers PLEASE!

Excerpt:

Four months ago I snuck into Paris on a wet, chilly January night like a criminal, hiding my face in my shawl, taking extra care to be sure I wasn’t followed.

I stood on the stoop of my grandmother’s house and lifted the hand-shaped bronze door knocker and let it drop. The sound of the metal echoed inside. Her home was on a lane blocked off from rue des Saints-Pères by wide wooden double doors. Maison de la Lune, as it was called, was one of a half dozen four-story mid-eighteenth- century stone houses that shared a courtyard that backed up onto rue du Dragon.

I let the door knocker fall again. Light from a street lamp glinted off the golden metal. It was a strange object. Usually on these things the bronze hand’s palm faced the door. But this one was palm out, almost warning the visitor to reconsider requesting entrance.

The knocker had obsessed me ten years before when I’d visited as a fifteen-year-old. The engravings on the finely modeled female palm included etched stars, phases of the moon, planets, and other archaic symbols. When I’d asked about it once, my grandmother had said it was older than the house, but she didn’t know how old exactly or what the ciphers meant. Where was the maid? Grand-mère, one of Paris’s celebrated courtesans, hosted lavish salons on Tuesday, Thursday, and many Saturday evenings, and at this time of day was usually upstairs, preparing her toilette: dusting poudre de riz on her face and décolletage, screwing in her opale de feu earrings, and wrapping her signature rope of the same blazing orange stones around her neck. The strand of opal beads was famous. It had belonged to a Russian empress and was known as Les Incendies. The stones were the same color as my grandmother’s hair and the high- lights in her topaz eyes. She was known by that name—L’Incendie, they called her, The Fire.

We had the same color eyes, but mine almost never flashed like hers. When I was growing up, I kept checking in the mirror, hoping the opal sparks that I only saw occasionally would intensify. I wanted to be just like her, but my father said it was just as well my eyes weren’t on fire because it wasn’t only her coloring that had inspired her name but also her temper, and that wasn’t a thing to covet.

It wasn’t until I was fifteen years old and witnessed it myself that I understood what he’d meant.

I let the hand of fate fall again. Even if Grand-mère was upstairs and couldn’t hear the knocking, the maid would be downstairs, organizing the refreshments for the evening. I’d seen her so many nights, polishing away last smudges on the silver, holding the Baccarat glasses over a pot of steaming water and then wiping them clean to make sure they gleamed.

Dusk had descended. The air had grown cold, and now it was beginning to rain. Fat, heavy drops dripped onto my hat and into my eyes. And I had no umbrella. That’s when I did what I should have done from the start—I stepped back and looked up at the house.

The darkened windows set into the limestone facade indicated there were no fires burning and no lamps lit inside. My grandmother was not in residence. And neither, it appeared, was her staff. I almost wished the concierge had needed to open the porte cochère for me; he might have been able to tell me where my grandmother was.

For days now I had managed to keep my sanity only by thinking of this moment. All I had to do, I kept telling myself, was find my way here, and then together, my grandmother and I could mourn my father and her son, and she would help me figure out what I should do now that I had run away from New York City.

If she wasn’t here, where was I to go? I had other family in Paris, but I had no idea where they lived. I’d only met them here, at my grandmother’s house, when I’d visited ten years previously. I had no friends in the city.

The rain was soaking through my clothes. I needed to find shelter.

But where? A restaurant or café? Was there one nearby? Or should I try and find a hotel? Which way should I go to get a carriage? Was it even safe to walk alone here at night?

What choice did I have?

Picking up my suitcase, I turned, but before I could even step into the courtyard, I saw an advancing figure. A bedraggled-looking man, wearing torn and filthy brown pants and an overcoat that had huge, bulging pockets, staggered toward me. Every step he took rang out on the stones.

He’s just a beggar who intends no harm, I told myself. He’s just look- ing for scraps of food, for a treasure in the garbage he’d be able to sell.

But what if I was wrong? Alone with him in the darkening court- yard, where could I go? In my skirt and heeled boots, could I even outrun him?

My Review:

This novella was a gift from the author/publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Have you ever just wanted a short read that packs the heat?  Well this is it.

I love the Ashwood Falls Novels and this one set in that world is just one more to love.

Once Logan has Reagan in his arms again he knows he can’t let her go.  So to solve her problem he calls his Marshall Connor and has him do some research on her now deceased mate Mason.  When he catches her trying to leave to protect him and his pack he tells her what he found out. That leads into one of my favorite scenes.

She jerked back as if surprised by the information. “I never knew.” She sagged and wrapped her arms around her middle. “I was too busy dodging his fist.”

“And plotting your escape.” He softened his tone and reached out to her. Relief washed away some of his tension when she didn’t pull away. “Come inside. I have a few sentries keeping a watch out.”

Without warning, she hugged him tight. Closing his eyes, he held her to him, relishing in feel of her body against his. No matter how mad he’d been over the years, he still loved her.

Framing her face in his hands, he kissed her. A low growl vibrated from her as if the shewolf approved. Need rocked through him and he tore his mouth from hers. Without a word, he linked their fingers and tugged her toward the bedroom.

Easing her down on the soft mattress, he gazed into the depths of her desire-filled eyes. The flame they once had flared to life as if waiting for the moment when they would reunite. He ran his knuckles down her cheek and she shuddered. “I’m not going to let you go this time.”

“I should have fought harder to mate with you, or at least told you what had happened.” Her hazel eyes watered.

“The past is behind us. I don’t have the strength to push you away or to hold my wolf back from making you ours, forever.”

Realization lit up her features. A shimmer of hope formed in her expression. “Then don’t.  I’m yours. I’ve always been yours.”

Everything gets really hot and steamy from here.

Logan and Reagan have quite a bit to overcome and solve and Lia, as always, has us guessing until the end.

While there were editing errors I cannot judge them since this is an ARC and I hope that the final copy will be corrected.

I give this novella five contented purrs.

I hope Lia has more plans for this world.  I would hate not see it again.

Release Blitz for The Gilded Cuff by Lauren Smith with my Review and Giveaway!

                         The Gilded Cuff

by Lauren Smith

Series: Surrender, #1

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: February 10, 2015

Every passion has its price . . .

Journalist Sophie Ryder has been following Emery Lockwood’s story since she was a little girl. There has always been something in his haunted eyes that she couldn’t resist and now, when she’s certain he holds the key to solving a string of kidnappings, she’ll do anything to speak to him. Even if it means venturing deep into the seductive world of the Gilded Cuff, a luxurious BDSM club on Long Island’s Gold Coast and Emery’s personal playground.

From the moment Sophie enters his shadowy, sensual domain, Emery Lockwood knows this tantalizing new little sub was meant to belong to him. However, Sophie wants more from Emery than just pleasure . . . she wants his past. And that is something he isn’t willing to give—no matter who is asking. But every moment he spends with Sophie, Emery feels his control slipping and he knows it’s only a matter of time before he surrenders to her heart, body, and soul.

My Review:

This book was a gift from the author/publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Sophie Ryder had no idea what she was getting into when she agreed to let Emery Lockwood be her Master in exchange for his story.  All she knew was that she had to save him; that the kidnapper from his childhood wasn’t done with him.

I loved this story, the suspense just keeps rising as the pages turn.  I tried to guess to no avail.  There are many surprises in this book and Sophie’s submission is a beautiful thing to read.

Hotter than hot with and without sex the words sizzle off the pages.

One of my very favorite passages is the excerpt following my review.

I loved all the characters in the book especially Cody (Emery’s tech guy) and Hans his bodyguard and head of security.  Since Emery is mostly a recluse not leaving his estate, we only see a few of his friends and his parents.

I ran the gambit on emotions with this book and I cannot wait for the next in this series.

I give this book Five Contented Purrs, thank you Lauren!

He slid his hands up to her wrists then connected his palms to hers. She responded, lacing her fingers through his, squeezing gently. His throat tightened and his eyes burned.

The simple connection—so sweet, so innocent—bound him to her, like a shimmering web spun between them, unbreakable and inescapable. He lifted his head a few inches, needing to see her eyes.

They were luminous, her lashes at half-mast. He was lost. A world of unimaginable beauty existed in the crescent silver of her dreamy gaze. He felt like a man from the ancient world, gazing north at the distant star Polaris, finding his way home by the loyal light that shone there. She saw him, every part of her, her light penetrating the shadows stretching out from his soul. He was open, laid bare before her, a man prostrate before a goddess.

Completely and totally vulnerable.

A tremble racked his shoulders, his muscles clenching and tensing. Then pleasure swept through him. He was in control of this luscious, precious woman. He could take her, give her such ecstasy she’d never recover.

Sophie licked her lips, her breath slightly uneven.

“You have to stop doing that,” she whispered in all seriousness, her nose wrinkling just a little.

He cocked a brow. “Doing what?”

“Kissing me like that.”

“You don’t like the way I kiss?” Her body told him otherwise as he shifted above her, the movement pressing his groin into hers. She raised her hips, seeking him, but the sheet and their clothes kept them worlds apart.

“I like it too much. That’s the problem.”

He rolled his hips again, reveling in the little hiss of frustration she made.

“What else do you like too much?” He dropped his head to her neck and nibbled on the underside of her throat. She shook slightly, her pulse leaping beneath his tongue. She was incredibly responsive and her inexperience made her reactions raw and pure. It was perfect. She was perfect.

“That. That’s definitely too good.” Her response was barely more than a breathless rush of words.

“Good. My sub has pleased me with her honest responses. You’ve earned a reward.” He eased off her and lay down beside her on the bed.

Sophie’s hands fluttered to her wrists, making contact with the gold cuffs.

“What are these?”

“Cuffs.”

Sophie’s lips twitched, even as she narrowed her eyes. “Yeah, I can see that. Why’d you put them on me?”

He propped himself up on one elbow and drew a finger along the sensitive skin of her inner right wrist by the cuff.

“It’s part of our bargain. The cuffs remind you that you are mine.”

“Okay, so what’s my reward for allowing this?”

“You didn’t allow it, Sophie. You surrendered to it. Never think being a submissive is about allowing your dom to do something. You surrender. You give me your power.” Emery cupped her face and held her gaze, forcing her to confront his domination and accept it.

Her eyes—still wild, still free—darkened like a waning moon. “I surrender.”
