A discharged Army Ranger, Ben considers his job as a BDSM club security guard to be an excellent hobby. He’s never been tempted to join in. But everything changes when the notorious Mistress Anne inadvertently reveals the caring heart concealed beneath her Domme armor.
Now, he’s set his sights on the beautiful Shadowlands Mistress. Maybe he’d considered himself vanilla, but she can put her stiletto on his chest any day, any time. He’ll trust her delicate hands to hold his heart. And if she wants to whip his ass on the way to an outstanding climax, he’s just fine with that too.

Sure, he knows she likes “pretty boy” slaves. And he’s older. Craggy and rough. And six-five. Minor hindrances. The mission is a go.

SummerBlog Excerpt

Ben had been to Anne’s house before—chauffeuring her and her friends to a bachelorette party last winter. As he walked around his car, he could see past her cottage-style house to the ocean beyond. How the fuck did she manage a beach house on a bounty hunter’s salary?
When he opened the passenger door, the interior light showed she was still asleep in the tipped-back seat. She’d miscalculated the effect of alcohol on pain pills, Z had said.
Her dark brown hair which she’d worn braided back in a severe style had come undone. The loose tendrils softened her aristocratic face. She wasn’t a small woman—maybe five-eight—but beautifully formed with small breasts, a tight rounded ass. A darkening bruise marred the sculptured beauty of her right cheekbone.
God fucking dammit, he’d never seen anyone so beautiful.
“Mistress Anne.” He unfastened her seatbelt. Hell, she wasn’t budging. With a grunt of exasperation, he opened the purse that Z had retrieved from her locker. Her house keys were clipped to the strap. “I hope you don’t have a dog, woman, or you’ll have a real short ride.” He set the purse in her lap and plucked her off the seat.
She was heavier than he expected. Undoubtedly had more muscles than the last lass he’d carried. He kicked the car door shut and carried her up to the cottage.
No dog. He walked through the foyer, took a guess, and headed up the stairs. An opened door showed the master bedroom—or would that be called the mistress bedroom? Using his elbow, he flipped on the overhead chandelier light.
Icy blue walls. A glass-fronted fireplace with an ornate mirror over the mantel. A canopied bed with a ruffled floral bedspread. A white couch with fancy legs in front of a wall of windows. All blue and white, like an airy summer garden, it was the most feminine room he’d ever seen.
She roused when he laid her on the bed, and damned if Ms. Feminine didn’t try to punch him.
The candle-shaped lights overhead provided crappy illumination—and hell, she probably only saw a hulking monster over her. He caught her delicate fist in his oversized palm. “Easy, Ma’am.”
Her finely arched brows drew together as she tried to sit up. He didn’t miss the way her hand grabbed her ribs. Damn foolish woman.
“It’s Ben. From the Shadowlands. I brought you home.”
“Ah, Ben.” She gingerly relaxed back on the mattress. “Thanks for the ride. Please tell Z I said so.”
“You’re welcome, Mistress Anne.” He shifted his weight, uncomfortable as hell. But the garment she wore seemed to be some combination of a corset and a dress. It had obvious ribbing and was way too tight. She couldn’t sleep in it. “Uh…you need to get out of that contraption.”
He was standing over her—one big ugly guy. She was flat on her back and totally unconcerned. “Do I now?”
The edge of warning in her voice made his cock stir.
“Yes, Ma’am.” The honorific came easily to his lips. She reminded him of the elegant captain of Marines in his first deployment. Always in control, and even when covered with blood and filth, still refined.
He smiled at her. “How about you order me to give you some help?”
Her snort of exasperation sounded like a kitten’s sneeze. “Benjamin, if a subbie tells me to order him to do something, then who’s in charge?”
“Got me there.” And damned if he was going to leave without getting her comfortable. “You going to punch me if I help you strip down?”
She eyed him. Her pupils were still smaller than normal, making her eyes even bluer. “I never realized how stubborn you were.”
“Yes, Ma’am.”
Her sigh held a note of exasperation. “Help me out of this, then.”
He reached for the front and realized her ribbed long dress had no buttons. Stalling, he moved down to unlace her thigh-high boots. When he pulled them off, he heard a sigh of relief.
Damn, her pretty legs had a sexy golden tan. High-arched feet. Her toenails were a pale pink with white stripes. Amazing what women did for fun. Her mutant black dress was next. Thinking to salvage her modesty, he picked up the frilly knitted throw from the foot of the bed and draped it over her lower legs.
Next. He’d have been more comfortable walking into a firefight.
Her fucking dress had toothpick-sized metal studs down the front that poked through metal grommets. Only way to get it off would be to stick his fingers inside and draw the edges together to release each fucking stud. Her breasts were in there. Jesus, he couldn’t do this.
Her lips curved up in a wicked smile. “Don’t stop now, Benjamin.”
“Having fun are we, Mistress?” he muttered and slid his big fingers inside the top.
“Mmmhmm.”
She was warm, her skin silky on the backs of his knuckles. And he was harder than a rock. The corset part of the dress came undone, catch by catch. But the tightness increased over her ribs, and when he pulled the edges together, she made a sound of pain.
He stopped. How the fuck could he do this if he hurt her? “Anne?”
“Go on.” Her hands were fisted, her fingernails digging into her palms. But her gaze was clear and level. “You’re right—I’d have had a hard time getting out of this. I’m not moving as well as I was earlier.”
“What kind of damage are we looking at?” His jaw was tight as he continued as ordered.
Prong after prong.
Although she controlled her face, she couldn’t control the involuntary flinches and tightening of her belly.
“Bruised ribs; nothing broken.” Her voice sounded strained, but finally he was past that section.
He undid the looser part over her lower stomach and worked his way…down. As he flipped the dress open, he tried not to look.
Bullshit, he totally looked. His gaze traveled from her thong-covered pussy, up a softly rounded belly, to her sweet, high breasts. Rosy-brown nipples perked up in the cool night air. Her scent was almost edible—like tangerines accompanied by the light musk of a female.
Act like the gentleman you weren’t raised as, Haugen. He drew the blanket over her.
Turning his gaze away—so he wouldn’t see how he hurt her—he slid an arm under her lower back. Shit, her skin there was soft as well. Carefully, he lifted her far enough to slide her dress out.
Now she wore only a thong and a blanket. The room was far too fucking warm. “Thank you, Ben. That feels much better.”
“I bet.” He dared greatly and moved the lower blanket to one side. Her right thigh had a bruise almost the width of his fist. He glanced at her, eyebrows raised. “Boot?” “The bail fugitive had an overly protective, big brother.”
What a fucking job. No wonder she came into the Shadowlands with bruises and gashes.
“Wouldn’t you rather do something…safer?”
Her blue gaze turned chill as the arctic north. “No.” “Sorry, Ma’am.”
“You do say that rather well, you know,” she murmured. She had a dimple in her cheek, one he hadn’t noticed until he’d seen her at Gabi’s bachelorette party.
“I do what?” He needed to leave or he was going to strip that blanket off her again. Find every bruise and kiss them all better.
Ma’am. I thought you were vanilla, Ben.”
“I am.” And if he’d been daydreaming about her setting a sharp stiletto on his chest, he’d keep those thoughts to himself. “Did a bit of military, is all.”
“Ah.” She eyed him slowly, still not quite returned to her usual frightening brilliance. “Can I pay you for the time and gas to bring me all the way out here?”
“Yes, Ma’am.” He paused a second with a hope that Z never heard. He’d get his ass fired on the spot. “I think I deserve a kiss from the Mistress.”
Her eyebrows lifted. “You are just full of surprises tonight.”
Her husky voice always sounded like a morning after raw sex, but when it dropped to that throaty tone, he could see why men crawled on their knees in her wake.
He waited while she thought. He’d wait all night—fuck knew, looking at her wasn’t a chore.
Rather than answering, she held her arms up.
God loved him. He sat beside her hip, leaned down as she put her hands behind his neck.
More. He carefully slid a hand behind her shoulders. Her satin skin stretched over her smooth feminine muscles. He opened his other hand behind her head to enjoy the thick mass of silky fine hair. He was used to visual delights—she was a tactile symphony.
He lifted slightly, just enough to draw her against his chest, so he could enjoy the feel of her breasts against him.
Bless Z.
When he gazed down into her face, he could read her surprise at his daring, and then her eyes started to narrow. If he didn’t move, he’d lose his treat. So he bent his head and brushed his lips against hers.
Softness. Damned if he’d hurry. He settled his mouth over hers and walked empty-handed into the fire zone.

SummerBlog Excerpt

Do you know why you’re so fascinated with my tie?” he asked huskily, his eyes pinned on her. He practically fucked her with his gaze. His was so intense. His confidence set her on fire. It torched a path across her body, sizzling her skin.“Tell me,” she said, eager for more of his words. “Since you seem to know me so well. Tell me.”

He brushed the backs of his fingers against her cheek. Oh god, she was dying for him to kiss her. She was so eager to feel those lips. To taste him.

He grasped a wrist with one hand, yanking it up his chest, and loosely wrapping the end of his tie around her hand. “You want me to tie you up.”

“How do you know that?” she asked, her voice stripped to the bones. He knew her. He read her. He could sense everything she wanted. He crowded her against the wall. Heaven Leigh belted out her song on stage. The inky black of the backstage cloaked them.

“Am I wrong?” he asked, arching an eyebrow. “If I’m wrong, tell me and I’ll walk away.”

She shook her head. “Are you going to take it off? Tie me up?” she asked in a voice that barely sounded like it belonged to her. It belonged to the part of her that had been untended for years.

He grinned wickedly. “No. I have other ways to tie you up,” he said, and in a flash, he gripped her wrists in his big strong hands, wrapping his fingers around her, binding her as he yanked her hands behind her back. Heat flared in her body, spinning through her, settling between her legs. Her gorgeous, sexy panties were so damp right now they were useless.

She ached for his touch. And she could do nothing but wait for it since she was his hostage.

He was so strong, she couldn’t wriggle away if she wanted to. His thumbs dug into her wrist bones, pinning her hands above her ass, rendering her helpless. The pressure from the twist in her arms bordered on pain, and felt oh so good.

His body was aligned with hers. There was no space between the two of them. Only breath. Only words as he spoke in a bare, husky voice, “Do you know what else I’ve been thinking about all day?”

She shook her head.

He inched closer, his mouth mere centimeters from hers. Her lips parted, so ready for him. God, she needed him to kiss her. Needed it badly. He was making her wait for it. Making her nearly ask for it. His mouth hovered so close she wanted to dart out her tongue and lick him. Draw him to her. His forehead brushed hers, and her breath fluttered.

Somehow, she managed a please.

Please kiss you?” he asked. “Is that what you want me to do?”

She nodded, too turned on to form another word. Even a yes.

“That’s exactly what I’ve been thinking about all day,” he whispered.

Then he kissed her and he wasn’t gentle. He wasn’t sweet. He was rough as he claimed her mouth, kissing hard. She moaned as he drew her bottom lip between his teeth, then fused his mouth to hers.

His stubble rubbed against her cheek. She’d have whisker burn later. She longed for the redness, the proof, the evidence of a bruising kiss.

The kiss lit her up. She felt it everywhere. In her toes, in her hair, in her belly.

And, deliciously, between her legs.

Where she ached for him. She angled her hips closer as he kissed, desperately seeking contact from him. God, how she wanted him. And she didn’t even know his name.

SummerBlog My Review

Case Thomas is a college senior finishing up an internship requirement for his graduation, when his parents die in a car crash.  In that heartbeat he has the guardianship of his twin siblings, dealings with a lawyer, and finishing school.
A chance meeting with Gabbie Vaulst, part owner and teacher of a daycare center, changes a lot of things for him.
She teaches Case the way to handle his siblings, solves his daycare issues and lends him a hand so he can figure out the process of adopting his brother and sister.
I love the way this romance blossoms, the heat between them is sizzling. The children insert humor and challenges for both Case and Gabbie. Of course not everything can go smoothly, that is the way life happens.

SummerBlog My Review

I love this series, so many authors all setting their stories in one place, the Black Hills.  We frequently see folks from the previous stories pop in which makes it interesting. In this one we see Ryker the pack enforcer briefly, to be sure things are on the up and up with the ‘interloper’.

In this addition to the series we have a long time resident Tala and Yas a wolf looking for his roots.

Tala is trying to start a Bed and Breakfast to accommodate returning pack members until they can fix up or rebuilt their homes. However she has been plagued with vandals causing more damage than she can keep up with.

Yas needs a place to stay and needs to work for his room and board. Boy did he come to the right place. There is a lot of neglect and damage done to this large house.

Right from the start there is attraction and I love the way they interact. The sexy thoughts and trying to keep cool had me giggling.
A favorite scene is when Tala brings him some cold lemonade while he is working on the deck outside.

“How’s it going out here?” She surveyed the work he’d done so far.

“Faster than I thought. When you work on a project, it can be easy or slow. With a newer covering, it might take longer to remove. This paint’s so old, it’s coming off like dust.”

The speckles on his arms and face reinforced his statement, and she stifled a laugh. “I can see that. Have you been frolicking through all that ‘dust’?”

“What?” He checked out his spotted arms. “Just what I need, to be even whiter than I already am. It should all come off in the shower.”

“Mmmm-hmmm, and you better get cleaned up first thing. I don’t want all that getting in the house.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He saluted and took a long draw of lemonade. His mouth puckered up, and his eyes crossed. “Wow. Sour.”

“I hope you’re exaggerating. It’s better than being too sweet.”

“Here, taste.” He stood, took another sip, and then pulled her tight to his body. The heat radiated off his skin, and he pressed his cool lips against hers.

Shocked by his actions, Tala didn’t react. She took in all the elements. The feel of his body. The enticing scent coming off his skin, appropriately like smoldering wood. Soon, she grew more aware of the weight of Yas’s arm on her waist and the insistence of his kiss.

She parted her mouth, tentatively touching her tongue along his bottom lip. He tasted tangy and refreshing. He deepened the kiss, drawing out her tongue, until they breathed the same air.

Everything changed with this one liplock. It was as if she’d never been kissed before, and never would feel this same way again. He, they, this moment became the center of her being. Everything else fell away.

The air between them made her realize the kiss had ended.

“So?” he asked, prodding her with more than his words.

She opened her eyes, recognizing a bit of mirth in his.

“How does it taste?”

She smacked her lips together. “Exactly how I like it.”

I only wish there had been a bit more of the reason Yas traveled to Los Lobos. He didn’t really get much chance to ask anyone anything.

Mira grew up in a savage tract of existence known as Hell’s Highway—a parcel of land for genetically impure humans (Impures) cast out during a savage battle between humanity’s government  the NAH) and the Paraspecies. When a cease fire was declared, the two opposing sides retreated, regrouped, but the fight for survival had just begun for Impures forced to exist within a kill or be prey existence.
As a runner for The Alliance, Mira ran messages and provisions back and forth between her camp and Redemption—a bartering outpost created by the Paraspecies to help Impures within Hell’s Highway. But for the past two years Mira has been a prisoner of war, detained and tortured in an unsanctioned NAH facility within the lawless lands of Hell’s Playground. Now free, she must risk her life to fulfill a promise made to a fellow prisoner—travel to Redemption and enlist the aid of the Paraspecies. Returning to the outpost, though, means reuniting with the Alpha wolf she’d once hoped to have a future with.
As Quadrant Alpha of the most dangerous section of Paraspecies land, the last thing Adrik needs is the Impure from his past suddenly returning after two years. He ripped Hell’s Highway apart searching for her two years ago, and his pack reaped the consequences of his shattered soul. Now, with a civil war threatening on his southern border, the constant battles with the succubae on his eastern border, and the latest command from Headquarters to assume the role of Alpha Commander, he doesn’t have time to wander around Hell’s Playground searching for a secret facility no one believes exists.
But the temptation to spend time with the Impure he’d once intended to mate proves too tempting. Together they must heal the wounds their time apart created and find a way to survive the dangers awakened.

SummerBlog My Review

Dragons, gryphons, and wolves, succubi, mages and half-breeds and impures. Oh My!  All of these are present in this tale of betrayal, survival, loyalty and love.
Mira was thought to be the Alpha Adrik’s mate. She disappeared two years earlier and had been imprisoned off the radar in a place unknown to anyone connected with Redemption.
Worse was she remembered. No one ever remembered they were brain-washed each night. Somehow she was not and they don’t trust her.
Somehow she has to get Adrik to believe her and return to free the others imprisoned there especially the one who helped her to endure the torture. The one responsible for her memory not being totally erased, the one she calls Deimos.
A favorite scene is after they have destroyed the facility and have stopped on the way back to redemption.

Heat settled in his eyes when he looked at her. He closed the distance between them and wrapped an arm around her side, drawing her into a half embrace. She hid her grimace in his shoulder and inhaled his scent. She surrendered to the weakness in her limbs and leaned into his strength.

“Fuck, sweetheart. I was an ass.” His hot breath fanned her earlobe and she shivered as a trill of pleasure swept through her. “Seeing that place and knowing you were there, suffering and defenseless, did something to me. Adding Deimos into the mix awakened my wolf, made me snarl and spew shit I shouldn’t have.”

“I wanted to share more about him with you, but I made a promise. He didn’t want anyone to know about him, the fact he was a Paraspecies,” she whispered as she pulled back to look up at him. Warmth settled in her belly and fluttered southward into a splay of tingles that made her legs weaken for an entirely different reason. “I missed you.”

He squeezed her waist and drew her forward until all she inhaled was him. Her pulse quickened. “I’m thinking we need some alone time, sweetheart.”

“Can you get away? Is it safe enough?”

He feathered her lips with a kiss. “I’ll always keep you safe. They’ll never touch you again.”

Then all the real fun begins.  I love this world, and the way we are introduced to it. The beginning of the book introduces us to the terms we will see throughout this book and future ones. The characters are very diverse yet all bound to the quest of a secure future for not only the paraspecies but the Impures as well.
I am looking forward to more of this series.

 SummerBlog My Review

Oh how I love this series.  This is Sable and Jared’s story and it couldn’t be more intense if it tried.

Savannah and Felix are coming for their daughter. Sable has made a deal with the Council to destroy her parents and end the escalating war, in exchange for a pardon.

Jared is opposed to this idea but knows he must go with her. She is his fated mate and he must bring her back alive to their son.

Being near each other without restoring the mating bond is painful for both of them. Sable knows how to kill her father, but needs to find Savannah’s weakness to defeat her.

Savannah is searching for Sable and has a new mutant tracker. The question is, does Sable, with Jared, have the magical strength to defeat her.

A fast paced story with lots of emotion and turmoil. I love the way we see the growth of the characters in each progressing story. I look forward to seeing more of this diverse pack.

SummerBlog My Review

I have to admit I have not read Tease Me – Book 1 of this series, but this one has me wanting to sit down and do just that followed by the rest, and all her Santini books too.
This is a story of healing and moving on.

Zoe Jones is ready to be released from the hospital and has been shanghaied by Joey Santini, her brother-in-law’s mother. While there, Joey arranges a dinner to which she invites Jessie Johnson, a Marine working at the pentagon and friend of the family.
I have to admit that the dinner conversation had me giggling like a school girl. Part of that is a favorite scene.

By the end of the meal, Jesse was sure he could take even the most subtle of hints. Of course, Joey wasn’t being subtle at all, so, knowing the woman like he did, he decided to do what she wanted. As they settled back drinking coffee and eating some amazing layered dessert, he decided to take the plunge.

“Have you seen much of DC before, Zoe?”

She shook her head. “I’ve only been here once. I guess I’ll be up here more often if Gee and Kianna decide to retire here. They’ve been talking about it. Although, I’m not sure she wants to leave Valdosta State.”

Kianna was a professor in the small Georgia town where Gee was stationed.

“So, since Joey isn’t going to let it go, why don’t you come out this week with me?”

“That is the rudest thing. And at my table,” Joey said, but he knew she wasn’t that mad. Papa just laughed.

That sparkle returned to her eyes. “If I don’t say yes, she’ll probably yell at me later.”  Jesse nodded. “And I was taking some time off this week. I missed the blossom festival because I was in San Antonio for work, but it’s still pretty. Why don’t we get together and go see the monuments.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

“There, are you happy?” he asked Joey.

“You are incorrigible.”

“I have to disagree with you there. Leo is kind of a pain in the arse, or so says Vince.” Zoe laughed. “Vince says that about all of them. See, you’re the oldest, just like him, so you think all of us younger siblings are idiots.”

He considered that with mocking deliberation. “But you are.”

“Maybe now I should tell Joey I don’t want to go to the monuments with you.”

He chuckled. “No, that’s one thing I don’t want to deal with.  She’ll blame me.”

Joey looked from him to Zoe then back to him again. “I am sitting right here. You two are worse than my own children.”

Zoe laughed. It was the first genuine laugh he had heard from her since he came to the house. It bubbled up out of her and made him smile.

The dinner party begins a series of dates and a relationship they both will have to figure out. A lighthearted read with some sizzling sex and a couple of twists.

MelissaSchroderMelissa Schroeder

From an early age, Melissa loved to read. First, it was the books her mother read to her including her two favorites, Winnie the Pooh and the Beatrix Potter books. She cut her preteen teeth on Trixie Belden and read and reviewed To Kill a Mockingbird in middle school. It wasn’t until she was in college that she tried to write her first stories, which were full of angst and pain, and really not that fun to read or write. After trying several different genres, she found romance in a Linda Howard book.

Since the publication of her first book in 2004, Melissa has had over fifty romances published. She writes in genres from historical suspense to modern day erotic romance to futuristics and paranormals. Included in those releases is the bestselling Harmless series and her USA Today Bestselling series The Santinis.. Along the way she has garnered an epic nomination, a multitude of reviewer’s recommended reads, over five Capa nods from TRS, eleven nominations for AAD Bookies and regularly tops the best seller lists on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Since she spent her childhood as a military brat, Melissa swore never to marry military. But, as we all know, Fate has her way with mortals. She is married to an AF major and is raising her own brats, both human and canine. She spends her days giving in to her addiction to Twitter, counting down the days until her hubby retires, and cursing the military for always sticking them in a location that is filled with bugs big enough to eat her children.

SummerBlog My Review

This book was a gift from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

So let me just recap a bit. We know we need 9 pairs of Soul Mates in order to defeat the demon Sebastian. These are the outsiders and the soul mates that we know of at this moment.

Leonardo, his soul mate is Alexa and she is under the control of Sebastian.  Marina and Drew are soul mates but haven’t actually completed the bond. Kal and Isabelle, Jason and Charma, Gabriel and Loraine, Samuel and Eden who were the subjects of the last book, Love Beyond Sight and Colin (Christophe’s Twin) and Zane (a safecracker) also showed up for the first time there. Christophe and Ruby are the subject of this book.  We appear to have all the male Outsiders, now to find the rest of the females.

We met Christophe before as he popped in and out of other books in his search for Leonardo. Ruby was ironically Leonardo’s replacement professor at Columbia University. In the last book we saw her and Christophe botching the whole attraction thing.

Now Ruby has joined the other Outsiders in Maine, much to Leonardo’s delight, and is helping with the translation of the books.

This book starts off with quite a bit of angst. First Sebastian attacks Christophe and Colin in their NY apartment. They split up and Christophe heads to Maine where they plan to meet. On a roll Sebastian also threatens Ruby in the Island Mansion.

Ruby while working on the translation has turned on the TV to discover something they need, the translation key, a staff that is in the possession of a preacher from her past. She gets Drew and Marina to take her to the mainland to take it from him.

Christophe arrives but can’t locate his brother, instead he finds Ruby. When Marina confirms he is one of them they go to a coffee shop to discuss what is happening. As is par for the course Christophe pops out. This does not end well.

A fire and explosion takes out the coffee shop as they are leaving Marina is injured, Drew vanishes then Christophe pops back in as Marina is being transported to the hospital.
He found his brother on that transport in the clutches of the demon.

Ruby gets a key not a bunch of them when she tries to get the staff by wanting it and Christophe manages a controlled transport with Ruby to her bedroom, and we all know what happens there.  So the soul mate thing kicks in nicely giving them both needed control of their powers. This was one of my favorite scenes.

Ruby shook, her body feeling like it might never cease its rattling again. If not for Christophe’s strong arms, she’d hit the floor. Where the hell had they gone? One second they’d stood on the street with so much sexual energy between them she thought a bomb might go off, the next instant they were swirling through nothingness going somewhere else.

She had no idea what happened; the only thing she felt certain about was that she had not caused the moving through space. That had to be Christophe…or some other Outsider. Or, god forbid, Sebastian…

“It’s okay.” Christophe sounded downright giddy as he squeezed her shoulders. “We moved through space to”—he looked left and right—”a bedroom. I don’t know whose it is but someone’s bedroom.”

Looking around, she laughed, wondering if she sounded like a lunatic. “It’s my room. In the mansion.”

“I moved us.” Why did he sound so happy? “Together. And I pretty much controlled it myself. I spoke aloud, and then I got to go to where I said I needed to go. That never happens. I’m always pulled out on a whim. No control.”

“That’s great.” She had to calm down. How did Christophe manage this on a regular basis? Her powers let her acquire weird objects, not bang in and out of places in swirls of nothingness with no warning. The key she held in her hand burned, and she looked down at it. Why did it hurt her? She held it up so Christophe could inspect it.

“Does this look like anything weird to you? It’s warming in my hand, almost painfully.”

“Hand it over.”

She gladly placed the object in the center of his palm. He curved his fingers around the key. “Feels cool to me, like the weather outside.”

“It’s burning my fingers when I touch it.”

Christophe entwined their hands. “Your skin doesn’t seem hot.” “Are you suggesting I’m imagining it?” She bit down on the inside of her cheek. She really, really hated it when people doubted her experiences. It had been bad enough when she had been young and her grandparents had insisted the things she thought happened to her hadn’t occurred.

“No, sweetheart.” He stroked a piece of her hair off her face. “Don’t get all worked up. I’m simply saying I can’t feel it. In the midst of all this lunacy, you think I question whether or not you can feel something I can’t?” All right, now he turned out to be reasonable when she wanted to act just the opposite.

“Christophe, I feel like I’m losing my mind.”

He stroked her hair, making her shiver. “I know. There’s a lot going on right now.”

The last line in the scene is quite the understatement. A bit more of the stuff going on. Zane meets a bartender Gia who it seems is another outsider, but not his soul mate, although they are cousins.

Alexa travels to Maine to try to join with the outsiders to destroy everything but some weird stuff is happening with her.  She meets Raquel (she started the fire at the coffee shop) who also wants to go to the island, but then the Outsiders are gone.

The staff, the key and a rescue are the goals of this book and yet more questions arise. I couldn’t stop reading, it’s fast paced and left me breathless for more!

Dang Rebecca, I need the next book, I am so addicted!

SummerBlog My Review

I love all manners and forms of Romance and Historical was one of the first I read in my younger days. You know the ones I mean, the bodice rippers. This book is rich in history and exquisitely detailed. Not at all like those books of yore.

This book was a gift from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

After a chance meeting and a kiss in the rain, Olivia never expected to see the man who assisted her free the carriage from the mud again.  Fate however, had other ideas. Fenton Pierce-Smythe shows up for dinner with her father. He is quite pleasantly surprised to see her again, not knowing he would have some interesting decisions to make.

Fenton is practically engaged and full of indignation that his Grandmere has to live with them because his father stopped helping her financially. He comes up with a plan to find runaway slaves and collect the bounties to save her home and business.

Olivia is full of life and is fighting for a cause, one that could lead to her being imprisoned or worse, killed, she is a conductor for the underground railroad.

Fenton’s initial run with his ship was turned into a leg of the underground when he finds that Olivia never left the ship, which was probably a good thing since a mob showed up on the docks.

I loved this story, the intensity of the era is brought forth in every word.  The build of the relationship between Fenton and Olivia is perfect, an exquisite tension that eventually explodes.

This was Ms. Bond’s  first book and I look forward to reading more from her.

Five Contented Purrs for this book.

Ever since her first encounter with a long hooped skirt gown at age 5, Ms. Bond fell in love with the style. Her love of historical romance began a bit later, when she discovered Gladys Malvern’s books and scoured the public library for every one she could find. Reading Gone With the Wind as a teenager cemented her suspicion that she was born about 100 years too late. She daydreamed about writing novels but knew it was beyond her ability at that time. Instead, she tried her hand at poetry and really bad iambic pentameter flowed from her fingers. Thankfully, for the world at large, it was a short-lived obsession.

After attending an all-girl high school run by nuns, she enrolled in a local men’s college that had just opened its doors to women. (A Libra, she understands the need for balance.) She earned her B.A. in English, and met her future husband there. Many years, four children and a grandchild later, the man who made her see fireworks with the first kiss is still her go-to research assistant for all things romantic.

The desire to write books never left, even as she worked selling property and casualty insurance, Avon, and craft kits. She sold luggage at a local department store to earn the money to attend her first RWA national conference and finally feels safe enough to admit to hiding a legal pad under her counter where she wrote scenes in between customers. She still does much of her writing longhand. (100 years too late, remember?)

RWA is the best thing to happen to her writing career, teaching the art as well as the craft of writing. It also brought her together with four of the most amazing women she’s ever known – critique partners and friends. Special thanks and much love to Helen, Karen, Carol and Jan.
