Christophe Roux has always known he was different. Born to a wealthy French family, he has never told anyone that he is frequently thrown through time and space to visit with ghosts and other terrifying creatures. But now he knows he is an Outsider and moreover that he has a soul mate somewhere out in the world waiting for him. When his brother is taken, he heads to Maine to search for help, never expecting that his love is the woman he has lusted after for years.

Ruby Brannon lived her childhood on the run and her adulthood trying to make sense of the strange things that happen to her. Now, she’s with the Outsiders but she is still unsure if she’ll be able to step up when it’s her turn to fight the evil seeking to destroy them all.

Together, Ruby and Christophe will change the fates of the Outsiders. Or die trying.

SummerBlog My Review

This book was a gift from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

So let me just recap a bit. We know we need 9 pairs of Soul Mates in order to defeat the demon Sebastian. These are the outsiders and the soul mates that we know of at this moment.

Leonardo, his soul mate is Alexa and she is under the control of Sebastian.  Marina and Drew are soul mates but haven’t actually completed the bond. Kal and Isabelle, Jason and Charma, Gabriel and Loraine, Samuel and Eden who were the subjects of the last book, Love Beyond Sight and Colin (Christophe’s Twin) and Zane (a safecracker) also showed up for the first time there. Christophe and Ruby are the subject of this book.  We appear to have all the male Outsiders, now to find the rest of the females.

We met Christophe before as he popped in and out of other books in his search for Leonardo. Ruby was ironically Leonardo’s replacement professor at Columbia University. In the last book we saw her and Christophe botching the whole attraction thing.

Now Ruby has joined the other Outsiders in Maine, much to Leonardo’s delight, and is helping with the translation of the books.

This book starts off with quite a bit of angst. First Sebastian attacks Christophe and Colin in their NY apartment. They split up and Christophe heads to Maine where they plan to meet. On a roll Sebastian also threatens Ruby in the Island Mansion.

Ruby while working on the translation has turned on the TV to discover something they need, the translation key, a staff that is in the possession of a preacher from her past. She gets Drew and Marina to take her to the mainland to take it from him.

Christophe arrives but can’t locate his brother, instead he finds Ruby. When Marina confirms he is one of them they go to a coffee shop to discuss what is happening. As is par for the course Christophe pops out. This does not end well.

A fire and explosion takes out the coffee shop as they are leaving Marina is injured, Drew vanishes then Christophe pops back in as Marina is being transported to the hospital.
He found his brother on that transport in the clutches of the demon.

Ruby gets a key not a bunch of them when she tries to get the staff by wanting it and Christophe manages a controlled transport with Ruby to her bedroom, and we all know what happens there.  So the soul mate thing kicks in nicely giving them both needed control of their powers. This was one of my favorite scenes.

Ruby shook, her body feeling like it might never cease its rattling again. If not for Christophe’s strong arms, she’d hit the floor. Where the hell had they gone? One second they’d stood on the street with so much sexual energy between them she thought a bomb might go off, the next instant they were swirling through nothingness going somewhere else.

She had no idea what happened; the only thing she felt certain about was that she had not caused the moving through space. That had to be Christophe…or some other Outsider. Or, god forbid, Sebastian…

“It’s okay.” Christophe sounded downright giddy as he squeezed her shoulders. “We moved through space to”—he looked left and right—”a bedroom. I don’t know whose it is but someone’s bedroom.”

Looking around, she laughed, wondering if she sounded like a lunatic. “It’s my room. In the mansion.”

“I moved us.” Why did he sound so happy? “Together. And I pretty much controlled it myself. I spoke aloud, and then I got to go to where I said I needed to go. That never happens. I’m always pulled out on a whim. No control.”

“That’s great.” She had to calm down. How did Christophe manage this on a regular basis? Her powers let her acquire weird objects, not bang in and out of places in swirls of nothingness with no warning. The key she held in her hand burned, and she looked down at it. Why did it hurt her? She held it up so Christophe could inspect it.

“Does this look like anything weird to you? It’s warming in my hand, almost painfully.”

“Hand it over.”

She gladly placed the object in the center of his palm. He curved his fingers around the key. “Feels cool to me, like the weather outside.”

“It’s burning my fingers when I touch it.”

Christophe entwined their hands. “Your skin doesn’t seem hot.” “Are you suggesting I’m imagining it?” She bit down on the inside of her cheek. She really, really hated it when people doubted her experiences. It had been bad enough when she had been young and her grandparents had insisted the things she thought happened to her hadn’t occurred.

“No, sweetheart.” He stroked a piece of her hair off her face. “Don’t get all worked up. I’m simply saying I can’t feel it. In the midst of all this lunacy, you think I question whether or not you can feel something I can’t?” All right, now he turned out to be reasonable when she wanted to act just the opposite.

“Christophe, I feel like I’m losing my mind.”

He stroked her hair, making her shiver. “I know. There’s a lot going on right now.”

The last line in the scene is quite the understatement. A bit more of the stuff going on. Zane meets a bartender Gia who it seems is another outsider, but not his soul mate, although they are cousins.

Alexa travels to Maine to try to join with the outsiders to destroy everything but some weird stuff is happening with her.  She meets Raquel (she started the fire at the coffee shop) who also wants to go to the island, but then the Outsiders are gone.

The staff, the key and a rescue are the goals of this book and yet more questions arise. I couldn’t stop reading, it’s fast paced and left me breathless for more!

Dang Rebecca, I need the next book, I am so addicted!

SummerBlog About the Author

Rebecca Royce Rebecca Royce

As a teenager, I would hide in my room to read my favorite romance novels when I was supposed to be doing my homework. I hope, these days, that my parents think it was worth it.

I am the mother of three adorable boys and I am fortunate to be married to my best friend. I live in Austin Texas where I am determined to eat all the barbecue in town.

I am in love with science fiction, fantasy, and the paranormal and try to use all of these elements in my writing. I’ve been told I’m a little bloodthirsty so I hope that when you read my work you’ll enjoy the action packed ride that always ends in romance. I love to write series because I love to see characters develop over time and it always makes me happy to see my favorite characters make guest appearances in other books.

In my world anything is possible, anything can happen, and you should suspect that it will.

I’d love to hear from you!

Cheers!!
