The last thing Ogden expected when he took a dinner break at Gee’s, was to find his mate. He didn’t want a mate, a mate would find out his secrets. Secrets he would then have to reveal to his Alpha and his packmates.

Lara came to Willow Bend after making the promise to her dying mother. She is keeping her promise but really wants revenge on the rancher who killed her mother as well as protect her pack. She didn’t want a mate, but that’s what she found.

This is a favorite scene when they have come to the realization that they are mates.

Before she could go farther, two vise-like grips encircled her wrists. Damn. His hands were every bit as strong as they looked.

“There’s an attraction between us,” he said, staring into her eyes.

No shit. What are you going to do about it, Mr. Lumberjack?

“What is it about you?” he asked next. “Why do I want you so much?”

“I think you already know,” she replied.

He scrubbed the lower half of his face with his hand. “Exactly what family business brings you here anyway, Lara?”

The less he knew, the better. “And why are you so curious, exactly?”

“I want to know how soon you’ll be gone.”

The words stung harder than she expected. Her swollen breasts and cleft throbbed, reluctant to accept a mating wouldn’t take place.

“Don’t worry. I won’t stay long.” She might even light out at dawn. This town was useless, and so was he.

His voice softened. “I didn’t mean to sound harsh. I’ve got lumber orders coming out of my ears. I’m not looking for a mate.”

“Neither am I,” she blurted. But didn’t her mother send her here to find one? “We are, though, aren’t we? Wolves have only one in a lifetime.”

He nodded. “I’m afraid so, but it doesn’t mean we have to act on our impulses.”

She couldn’t help hanging her head. After spending less than an hour with her, he’d already made her weak. She didn’t need this!

“Believe me, if you weren’t my probable mate, I would have had you on this floor already for a quick lay.” He buttoned his shirt. “I’ll go get the broom now.”

“Leave it outside the door.” As soon as he left, she sank to her knees in the cedar-scented bedding. So, he didn’t want to bind himself to her either. Good. Relief washed through her, followed by an emptiness she didn’t expect.
Alpha in Disguise (Black Hills Wolves Book 9) (Kindle Locations 230-248). Decadent Publishing. Kindle Edition.

A pack that lives under the threat of death, a dominant disguised as an Omega, a murderous rancher and a lot more secrets. A fast paced enjoyable read, with some suspense and a lot of fighting the mating thing.

I only had one problem in the telling of this tale,  Drew is said to have shot his father, that is not what happened. Drew took down Magnum in an Alpha Challenge to become the New Alpha.

An all-business Texas Ranger falls hard for an irresistible lady rancher he rescues from dangerous poachers.

Review Spring Blog - Copy

Lennon just wants to run her ranch with her family. Her family is not a traditional one but composed of a neighbor who lost his wife, and her cousin’s child she is raising as her own. Problems have been escalating and stretching her budget to it’s limits. When more of her cattle go missing and she finds the cut fence and tire tracks she contacts the Sheriff. Unfortunately for her he still holds a grudge against her from high school and informs her anything she reports is a low priority for his department. As a last ditch effort to get some form of help she calls The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. They have retired Rangers who help investigate these types of problems.Texas Ranger Dallas McClain believes he lost his family because of his past. When he’s approached by friend and retired Ranger Hiram Glover, to investigate the claims of a female rancher he doesn’t hesitate. However after talking to the local Sheriff he wasn’t sure what to expect. The Sheriff definitely rubbed him the wrong way. Once he arrives and starts looking closer into the issues he realizes that the problem is definitely there and dangerous to everyone on the ranch.

This is a favorite scene occurring not long before all hell breaks loose.
“They’ve been inseparable for over eight years. No matter how many chickens came or went, Banty never showed interest in anyone else. He hovered around her, keeping any others away from her. He’s going to be so lonely.”

Dallas felt odd that a couple of birds could have a more meaningful relationship than he’d had with his wife. “Let me put the chicken in the barn. I’ll bury her for you in the morning.”

“Thank you. You’ve done that for several things around here lately,” she said, thinking of the cow and the deer that had been shot. He’d taken the backhoe out and dug a pit, disposing of the carcasses.

“You’re feeding me, giving me a free place to stay,” he murmured, not knowing what else to say. Dallas placed a hand on her back as she finished gathering the eggs. All the while, the small rooster followed them around as if he expected the pair to make things right for him.

Then suddenly, out of nowhere, a gunshot tore through the night and Lennon jumped, throwing eggs up in the air. “Damn!” Dallas exclaimed, placing a hand on his own gun and dashing from the henhouse and out into the dark.

“They’ve shot another cow!” Lennon cried, following right in behind him as he ran to his truck. As soon as they were in, Dallas headed out the gate and down the road, expecting to find someone fleeing the scene. Instead, he saw nothing. No one. Parking at the gap, he grabbed a flashlight from beneath the seat. “Let’s see if we can find anything.”

“Okay.” Lennon went with him, catching his sleeve to stay alongside. Without thinking, Dallas grabbed her hand. Once they were in the pasture, he scanned the area with the beam of light, seeing the herd grazing peacefully to one side. “What do you see?” she asked.

He started to say ‘nothing’, but then the flashlight beam landed on something… “My God,” he breathed. “It’s not an animal, it’s a person. Someone’s been shot!” Together they took off, running toward a form that Dallas could see on the ground about fifty yards in the distance.

When they arrived at the body, Dallas went to his knees, finding a man of obvious Hispanic descent. “This looks like someone who might’ve just crossed the river today. I bet he hid out till the sun went down, then decided to walk out.” He wasn’t unfamiliar with undocumented immigrants finding their way across the Rio Grande.

“But who would shoot him?” Lennon was stunned. “Is he dead?”

After examining for a pulse and the wound, Dallas answered. “Yes, shot in the heart.” He didn’t like this; he didn’t like it at all. Staring at the poor individual, he got a distinct chill. The man was small and the way he dressed was very familiar. “I think the same person whose been killing your livestock killed him.” And the scary thing was– from a distance, the shooter might have thought he was aiming at Lennon.
Cowboy Justice 12-Pack (Kindle Locations 8379-8401).Kindle Edition.

I love the location for this story, the family dynamic and how the relationship between Lennon and Dallas grows. With cattle rustling, illegal border crossings and vandalism by the ton, this one will keep you on your toes until the very end!

First-term Sheriff is torn between duty and love when sexy Chief of Surgery is accused of medical malpractice and homicide.

Review Spring Blog - Copy

Sheriff Kyle Monroe  and Dr. Tess Sweeny are a couple, problem is no one knows. She has insisted on that since Kyle’s had been her patient and his twin brother Troy is Chief of Staff at the hospital. Troy doesn’t like her very much, not personally or professionally. She was hired by the board of directors as Chief of Surgery, before he was appointed.

Car accidents happen quickly and the results can be devastating for parents, in this case the news is bad for one set of parents and good for the other. In this case 2 prominent families are involved and the doctor has a not so pleasant history with one of them. Here is the scene that had me up in arms routing for the doctor.

A hand clasped down hard on her shoulder and wheeled her around. Preston Lloyd had followed her from the room and now glared at her, his jaw flexing and relaxing. “Excuse us, Sheriff. Tess and I need to have a private conversation,” he said and jerked Tess off to one side.

“I want to know why you killed my son. Did you think it would be the perfect revenge? The perfect way to get back at me? Did you? Did you? It was just a car accident. There’s no way my son could have died from it.” His voice vibrated with rage. His hands were rolled into tight fists at his side.

“That’s enough, Lloyd.” Kyle said, stepping between them.

“You bitch.” He leaned toward Tess, pointing his finger in her face. “I’ll have your license, Tess. I’ll personally see to it that you never kill another person.”

“Preston, I—” Her heart thumped painfully against her chest. Diamond Lakes was a small town with a tight medical community. Preston had enough political clout to ruin her career if he so chose.

“I said that’s enough.” Kyle pressed his hand on Lloyd’s chest to hold him away from Tess. All he was missing was the suit of armor.

She shouldn’t be relieved to have Kyle protecting her. She should be strong enough to stand up for herself. But she was so tired, so heartbroken, so fragile right now. A single word could reduce her to tears. When she laid her hand on Kyle’s back, the muscles were tense and strained.

Preston shoved Kyle’s shoulder to dislodge his restraining hand. “You stay out of this, Monroe— if you want to keep your job as sheriff. I can make your reelection campaign fizzle before it starts.” He glared at Tess over Kyle’s shoulder. “This is between me and this lying, vindictive murderer. She killed my son.”

Kyle placed his hand on Preston’s shoulder and squeezed. Preston flinched. “That’s more than enough. Dr. Sweeney isn’t to blame. I’m sorry for your loss, Preston. You need to go see to your wife.”

Preston jerked his shoulder out of Kyle’s grasp. “This isn’t over, Tess. Not by a long shot. I’ll be contacting the head of hospital, the chairman of the board, and the president of the Texas Medical Society and filing a complaint about you with each of them. I promise you, I will find a way to ruin your life like you ruined mine tonight.” He stormed away, slamming the surgery waiting room door against the wall.
Cowboy Justice 12-Pack (Kindle Location 6196-6215).Kindle Edition.

Preston starts the trouble immediately and in a media storm. Blaming the driver of the other vehicle and the doctor as well claiming drunkenness on both their parts. As the truth unwinds there are quite a few surprises for all involved.

This book shows the incredibly insane things that happen when people in a positions of power misuse it. The ability to fight and overcome is a real battle in these situations. An intense, well written satisfying read.

Wolf Bite

WolfBite300

After a dominance challenge ended with his parents deaths, Mason left Willow Bend and his pack behind, choosing instead to live life on his own terms…as a Lone Wolf. A wanderer, he keeps his life simple and carefree until an unexpected encounter brings him face to face with his tragic past and the woman he always adored. Determined to get her out of his blood, he teases her into an easy one-night stand…but one taste will never be enough.

Adopted as a young girl, Alexis Huston lived on the fringe of pack life. She’s never been strong enough, fast enough, or pretty enough—except to Mason, but then he left her. Allowed her freedom as an adult and sworn to keep the pack’s secrets, she’s struggled to fit into the ‘human’ world. A chance meeting turns her hard-won life upside down.

She is left with two options—she can tell the only wolf she’s ever loved that she’s carrying their child…or she can protect him, keep the baby a secret, and run.

Caged Wolf

Caged Wolf 300

Triplets, the Buckley brothers were inseparable until everything went wrong one violent, bloody night. A.J. Buckley, the eldest of the trio, faced a human trial for a brutal murder. Found guilty, he was sentenced to twenty-five to life. Without argument or regret, he accepted the sentence. After six years in prison, A.J.’s conviction is overturned on a technicality and he returns to Willow Bend to face a new Alpha and fresh charges.

Vivian Knox was the only witness to the murder. She refused to testify in the human courtroom and spent a year in prison on contempt charges. Once released, she worked tirelessly to free A.J., finally locating a loophole in the case against him. Satisfied with his freedom, the last thing she expected was to be kidnapped to the back of beyond where another judge demands she testify to what she saw that night. This time, contempt is the least of her problems.

Only four people know exactly what happened that night and none are talking. When pack law threatens Vivian, A.J. must stake his claim, but his wolf might be too damaged to help him…

Wolf Claim

WolfClaim300-200x300

Gillian Whitford, darling of Willow Bend, brings out the protective instincts in all the dominants, but none more so than Owen Chase, the pack’s Hunter. A loner by nature and calling, Owen spends less time with his pack mates and more time on the borders of their land. Not even the change in the Alpha and the swearing of a new oath kept him around long.

Winds of change still drift through Willow Bend as they adjust to their new Alpha. When the Hudson River pack requests a fill-in healer to replace their own, Gillian, journeymen apprentice to their Pack healer, is the obvious choice to help. Owen forbids her to accept, but the sweet natured wolf rebukes his selfishness and volunteers anyway.

Risking a challenge, Owen faces off against his Alpha to appeal her decision and finds himself charged with her safety. Now, the loner will be escorting one of his pack’s most precious into foreign lands. He’s all that stands between her and a dozen potential threats…and if he doesn’t stake his claim, he may lose more than his heart.

Brotherhood. Club. Family.

They live and ride by their own rules.

These are the Raven Riders…

Raven Riders Motorcycle Club President Dare Kenyon rides hard and values loyalty above all else. He’ll do anything to protect the brotherhood of bikers—the only family he’s got—as well as those who can’t defend themselves. So when mistrustful Haven Randall lands on the club’s doorstep scared that she’s being hunted, Dare takes her in, swears to keep her safe, and pushes to learn the secrets overshadowing her pretty smile.

Haven fled from years of abuse at the hands of her criminal father and is suspicious of any man’s promises, including those of the darkly sexy and overwhelmingly intense Ravens’ leader. But as the powerful attraction between them flares to life, Dare pushes her boundaries and tempts her to want things she never thought she could.

The past never dies without a fight, but Dare Kenyon’s never backed down before…

Review Spring Blog - Copy

Haven and her best friend have been given shelter at the Raven Rider’s clubhouse after being kidnapped by the Church gang. Haven is running from her father who wanted to marry her off to the highest bidder with an advantageous alliance. Getting kidnapped and then rescued has not done much to alleviate her fears or encourage her trust.

After all the stuff that had gone down with the Hard Ink crew, Dare didn’t think for a minute that the gangs now fighting for supremacy in the city would let it go. Now he had to make sure that the two young women in the club’s care could move on and start a new life.  First he had to know the whole story from Haven so they could plan accordingly.

Bravery, challenges, love, and trust woven into a complicated tale with one ultimate goal. A life without fear of pursuit.

I couldn’t put this book down. I loved seeing the Raven Riders up close and personal. Dare stole my heart too. The chemistry is explosive between Dare and Haven and he has a hard time keeping his hands off her. As evidenced in the excerpt below, a favorite of mine.

His left hand dragged down her body, over the small mounds of her breasts and the flat plane of her stomach. His fingers settled on the button to her jeans. “Because you realize now I have to exact my revenge.” He paused there, giving her the chance to tell him to back off.She shivered beneath him. “I guess fair’s only fair,” she whispered. That’s my girl, he thought, even though the sentiment was really problematic. On all kinds of levels. “You want me to stop, Haven, you just say the word.”

“Don’t stop,” she said, her lips parting, her breathing coming faster.

On a groan, Dare claimed her mouth with his. He tugged the button to her jeans free, yanked down the zipper, and pushed his hand beneath the snug material to find her hot and so damn slick.

Her tongue stroked against his, and he swallowed her moans as his fingers stroked her folds. She rocked her hips and parted her legs without him having to ask, pulling a growl of approval from low in his throat—and making him know that fingering her wasn’t going to be enough.

Not for him.

Not this time. And not that it had really been last time, either.

It’s Here! My Review of Exquisite Karma by Ann Mayburn

Exquisite Karma

Exquisite Karma

Iron Horse MC Book 3

By
Ann Mayburn

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Synopsis Spring Blog - Copy

~Author’s Note-Exquisite Karma is part 2 of Beach and Sarah’s story. Part 1, Exquisite Redemption, should be read first for the most enjoyment.~

Sarah
Life as the old lady of Carlos ‘Beach’ Rodriguez, National President of the Iron Horse MC, was everything I never knew I wanted. Not only did I have a good man who treated me like a queen and loved me like crazy, I also had a vast-extended family of rough and tumble bikers who accepted and welcomed me into their world without judgement. Unfortunately, good things don’t last for a girl like me and just when I finally felt like I’d found my happily ever after my psychopath of a mother had to show up and destroy it. She betrayed me, betrayed the club, and put everyone I’ve ever loved in mortal danger. Our only chance of surviving this is for me to find her and recover the weapons that Iron Horse was moving for the Russian and Israeli mafia that she helped steal. I can only hope that Beach can forgive me for her sins.

Beach
I should have known Sarah would never betray me, would never work with her junkie mom to steal from the club, but I let my temper run my mouth and now my woman’s gone. Normally I’d go after her, but the Russian and Israeli mafias want their merchandise back and if we don’t find it they’ll wipe us off the face of the earth. To make matters worse, there are traitors in the Iron Horse MC that are feeding our every move to our enemies, kidnapping our women and children, and killing our men. I have to stay here in Austin and try to save our people while Sarah is out there, somewhere, alone, hunting down some of the most dangerous men in the world. I can only pray that God takes mercy on my wicked soul and protects my baby girl from those seeking to cash in on the massive bounty on her head before I can find her. ‘Cause if they find her first death would be a mercy compared to the nightmare her life will become.

I love this series! Hot Dominant Alpha MC, with all the trimmings. This is part two of Beach and Sarah’s story. It tells the tale of what was going on with them during the first book Exquisite Danger which is Smoke and Swan’s story.

The story opens with a Barbeque hosted by Beach and Sarah at the clubhouse. It contains one of my favorite scenes occurring because Sarah is sometimes a bit careless.

Instead of rising to the bait, I pointed at the double doors at the back of the kitchen that led to large yard of the clubhouse, where most of the men were. “You have thirty seconds to take your negativity out of my kitchen or we’re gonna have problems.”

“Fuck you,” the redhead sneered and touched her vest. “I’m Score’s old lady.”

I stared blankly at her. “And?”

“He’s the VP of the Billings Chapter of Iron Horse. You’re nothin’ but public pussy, a little house mouse here to clean up my shit. One word from me and you’re gone, so I suggest you shut your fuckin’ mouth before I do it for you.”

I burst out laughing as she took a step closer to me. “House mouse? Sweet butt? Seriously? Bitch, please tell me you’re joking.”

She raked her eyes over me, going from my super cute and trendy bob that brushed my shoulders, to my pink tank top with “Support Your Local Iron Horse MC” on it, down to my jeans and kick-ass pink-and-black Dior sandals then back up. “Don’t see no patch on your back.”

It only took me a second to realize she was right, I wasn’t wearing my property patch, and I inwardly groaned when I realized Beach was going to be pissed. One of his main rules, one that he was inflexible on, was that if I was at the clubhouse, I wore his property patch on my back. I’d had it on earlier, but had taken it off during the lunch prep because I didn’t want to get it dirty.

Before I could look around for it, Scarlet was at my side in her cute cherry print summer dress, my vest in her hands and her gaze hard as she stared down the redhead. “Take a walk, Lisa.”

“Fuck you, Scarlet.” One of the women standing with Lisa tried to tug on her arm, but the redhead shook her off. “This isn’t any of your business.”

“Actually,” Scarlet cocked her hip then held her free hand out in my direction, “it is my business when you fuck with my Prez’s woman. Meet Sarah Star, Beach’s old lady. You know, the person he’d kill anyone for insulting?”

As I slid the vest on, Lisa’s face began to pale, then red suffused her cheeks as she sucked in a harsh breath. “Shit.”

“Yeah,” I said in a sweet voice, “shit. I suggest you move your ass out of my kitchen, now.”

Oh, that pissed her off, and for a second I thought she might throw a punch at me, but she looked away and muttered, “Fine.”

I stared at her back as she walked away, memorizing her patch so I could keep an eye on her in the future.

Most of me was glad I didn’t have to kick her ass with kids around, but the bloodthirsty killer that lived deep inside me would have enjoyed a good fight.
Exquisite Karma (Kindle Locations 128-148). Honey Mountain Publishing. Kindle Edition.
But that was the very least of the problems that were about to hit them. We see Sarah’s friend Marley and her son in this one and her stepmother Mimi, her dad Mike Anderson and her biological Mom Billie plays a big part in this.

There is a lot and I do mean A LOT of extremely hot sex in this book. Beach and Sarah can’t keep their hands off each other when they are together. But just as often in this book they are apart. Lots of things are going FUBAR for the club and Beach has much on his plate to smooth things out. When Sarah’s mom, Billie shows up things only get worse. On top of everything there is a traitor in their midst. One not above killing and kidnapping and stealing in an attempt to destroy this close knit powerful club. Although we don’t officially learn who this traitor is, if you’ve read all the books, you’ll know.

Other folks we see are Smoke and Swan and Lyric from the compound near Mike and Mimi. All of the Iron Horse Austin Chapter’s members. So much stuff going on and it makes for a fast paced read! If you haven’t read at least Exquisite Redemption you will definitely be lost. Links for all the books in this series are below.

Human hunters have been plaguing the Black Hills wolves, now Stephen has scented them near the pack borders. As is a somewhat usual routine for him he goes to try to tempt his mate into bonding with him. Trying desperately to wear down her resistance. He just wishes he knew why she keeps pushing him away.Kate has problem, she can’t shift. No one knows not even her family, she stays away from pack runs and her Alpha for this reason. She is petrified of the recriminations of not being able to shift, even though Magnum is dead. She loves Stephen, knows he is her mate but she can’t let him become tied for live to a shifter who damaged in this way.

This is a favorite scene when Stephen is giving her the warning about the hunters.
His grip tightened, and he fought the urge to shake her into submission. Christ, she infuriated the shit out of him. “I don’t need you to be someone else. I just need you to be you. The exact way you are. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.”

Kate slumped and dropped her hands to her sides. “It won’t work, Stephen. You’re wasting your time with me.”

Brushing off his hold, she faced the forest once more and grasped the wood railing in front of her.

Still, she refused to give him a reason.

An unrelenting determination goaded him to push for more. He crowded into her personal space, plastering his bare chest to her stiff back. He dipped his head to the curve of her neck, the same delectable neck he’d dreamt of marking for years, and inhaled her scent. The sweet tinge of honeysuckle wrapped around his senses, driving the Wolf inside him nuts. She attempted to move away, but he slid an arm around her stomach, holding her in place. He ran his lips along the column of her throat while his body absorbed the tremble passing through her frame.

“Why, Kate? Why do you keep denying me?”

For one flicker of a moment, he thought she might give him a straight answer. Instead, she choked out, “It’s not meant to be. Please, leave me alone. I’m begging you.”

Fuck, she always pushed him away. Always kept to herself. Never trusted him enough to speak of her reservations. No matter how hard he tried to convince her she could open up to him, she ran.

Always.

Did she have any clue how much her denials affected him? His heart could only withstand so many jabs before it shattered into pieces, and she didn’t seem to care one damn bit.

“Fine. I’m going home.” Stephen heaved a frustrated sigh and dropped his arm. For once, he was too tired to chase her. He’d just tell her what he’d come to say and be on his way.

He stalked to the edge of the porch and paused on the last step. “Some hunters from Collins have been snooping around after Marston. I found traces of a human trail near the pack’s territory earlier tonight when I ran the borders. Be sure to keep your doors locked and don’t venture into the woods alone until this shit is sorted out.”

With his warning delivered, he stepped off the porch onto the dewy grass, the dampness tickling between his toes. Her faint sniffle reached his ears, and he forced himself not to race back to comfort her. Instead, he worked on steadying his thrumming pulse. Pushing past low-hanging branches, he slipped into a dense copse of trees behind her house and halted long enough to hear the slam of her screen door. Tilting his head to the side, he waited for the flip of her backdoor lock. At the low click, he continued on his way home to another morning spent in his lonely bed without his mate.
Taming His Mate (Black Hills Wolves Book 8) (Kindle Locations 107-129). Decadent Publishing. Kindle Edition.

Not your typical mating tale and one with angst caused by the human hunters. A fast paced enjoyable read.

This one is a bit different from the others and in some ways has me wondering about Ryker’s Indian roots.

Sela is determined to film a documentary about the wolves of Los Lobos. What she doesn’t know is that they kind of frown on publicity here. She’s rented a cabin at the edge of the protected state forest certain she’ll be able to befriend a wild wolf or two. This documentary is a project she must complete. She’s put the last of her savings into this project and being alone with wolves will be a healing process for her. Her divorce has left her feeling inadequate in many ways.

Rio has been a lone wolf for a very long time. He is a forest ranger and was special forces in the military as well. Drew’s pack doesn’t hold much interest for him, even though he is technically a part of it.

When these two meet at Gee’s there is immediately a problem. Mainly her determination to film wolves. Even bigger is Rio’s realization that this feisty lady is his mate. He comes up with a plan that will help her and protect the Black Hills pack, this is a favorite scene as he tells her where to look.

The truck pulled beside the cabin to park. He got out with a plastic box and steel thermos in his hands. His damp black hair reflected sunbeams, giving him a fresh-from-the-shower vibe. “Good morning! I’m surprised to see you awake.”

She nodded, at a complete loss of anything to say.

He walked toward the porch with an easy gait. Goddamn the man, he looked even better in daylight. His eyes sparkled, root beer brown. “I don’t mean to bother you, but I have to drive past anyway.” He handed her the box and thermos. “I was going to set these on the porch and call later.”
The containers were warm in her hands. “What is this?”

“Coffee and fry bread. I made it this morning. There’s some honey in the kitchen cabinet that will make it taste even better.”

It sounded heavenly. “Thank you.”

“Enjoy your day.” Rio returned to the truck, providing a prime view of his muscular ass flexing in tight jeans. The sight was starting to sink in when he made an abrupt turn to face her. “I almost forgot. Are you planning to film wolves today?”

She shrugged. “I don’t expect to do any filming. I’ll have to find the wolves first. Set up a blind. I was going to take a hike this morning to get acquainted with the area.”

“You won’t have to go far.”

“What do you mean?”

He pointed toward a trail that ran along a dense thicket and disappeared into a ravine. “Follow the path about a half mile to the river. The grade is steep. You’ll have to do a little rock hopping. Find a comfortable place to set up a blind, wait, and he’s sure to come by.”

“Who?”

“A lone male wolf with black fur. This part of Gray Paw Mountain is his territory. Bring your camera because, at this time of year, a sighting is almost a sure thing.”
Portrait of a Lone Wolf (Black Hills Wolves Book 7) (Kindle Locations 408-423). Decadent Publishing. Kindle Edition.

Of course his plans kind of backfire and now he not only has to convince her not to leave but also convince her they are mates.

I really liked this take on the Black Hills wolves. I did a lot of laughing, but I kept waiting for Ryker to show as well. I was glad he didn’t, it made for a wonderfully unique tale.

Excerpt Spring Blog - Copy

She’d thought he’d be easy to find, but the place was SEAL hunk central, with an awful lot of the fit, attractive guys in attendance. While quite a few of them flashed charming grins in her direction, none of them had those unforgettable blue eyes she’d spent the past four weeks seeing in her dreams.

Her earlier assessment had been right. This was hopeless.

Sighing, Hayley turned to go in search of Brad instead and almost smacked right into the broad, muscular chest of a guy in blue camo. She stared at his uniform up close, absently wondering why the Navy wore blue camouflage. It wasn’t like they were ever going to be in a blue jungle. She glanced at the rank on his collar—noting the three chevrons of a petty officer first class—then the nametag sewn on the right hand side of his chest, noting his name—it said WARD—before lifting her head to apologize for practically mowing him down. But when her gaze met his, all she could do was stare. There couldn’t be two men on the planet with eyes that blue. She’d found the SEAL who’d saved her life.

“It’s you,” she breathed.

Okay, that definitely wasn’t the most intelligent thing she’d ever said out loud. But the SEAL smiled anyway, flashing the cutest pair of dimples her way. Hayley’s breath hitched. She’d tried to picture what he looked like ever since that night, alternating between Chris Hemsworth and Henry Cavill and finally settling on a combination of the two. She hadn’t even been close. Petty Officer Ward was even more gorgeous than she imagined. Taller than she was by nearly a foot, he had broad shoulders, dark hair, and a square jaw to go along with those mesmerizing eyes. Now, this was what a superhero should look like.

“It is,” he said. “I’m glad to see you’re doing well, Ms. Garner.”

She’d been so caught up in the memory of the captivating blue of his eyes she’d completely forgotten how sexy his voice was. The deep, rich tones caressed her, making her feel warm all over. Just like they had that night in Africa. Wow, this guy was pure sexy, wrapped in blue camo. She had a crazy urge to ask him to say something else—anything else—so she could hear that voice again.

“Call me Hayley, please,” she finally managed.

She offered him her hand, pulse skipping when he took it. Wow, he had really big hands. A little part of her mind whispered something about the significance of that, but she ignored it. Instead, she focused on the overall sense of strength seeming to pour off him in waves. Being this close to him and getting a chance to take in how tall and muscular he was reminded her of the way he’d picked her up and carried her so effortlessly that night—all while using a weapon.

Hayley had never thought of herself as the kind of woman who wanted to be swept off her feet by a guy, but right now she was thinking this man could carry her anywhere he wanted to.

Damn, this guy was seriously messing with her calm, cool journalist exterior.

“Chasen Ward,” he said.

Chasen. Unusual, but it fit him. Gorgeous name for a gorgeous guy.

She wondered if the guy realized the kind of effect he likely had on every woman on the planet, especially the one standing right in front of him. Probably not, she guessed. Guys were usually clueless about that kind of stuff.

“How did things go over there?” she asked. “After you got me out, I mean.”

She cringed as soon as the words were out. Guess he hadn’t messed with her journalist mojo as much as she’d thought. Crap, now he’d think she was looking for a scoop. Nothing turned people off more than a nosy reporter.

But he merely nodded. The shade from the brim on his hat accentuated his chiseled features as he moved, making them seem even more angular.

“They went well,” he said. “My Team and I got back a few days ago as a matter of fact.”

Her inner Barbara Walters wanted to ask what else they’d done over there, but before she could decide if that was a good idea or not, two other Navy guys in blue camouflage sauntered over. Both petty officers second class, they were tall, well-built, and good looking.

“Hey, I know you,” the younger of the two men said with a trace of a Southern accent. Blond with brown eyes, he had that casual Channing Tatum-thing going on. “Though I hope you don’t mind me saying, you look a lot better now than you did the last time we saw you.” Hayley frowned in confusion at the two men, sure she would have remembered if she’d met them before.

Chasen chuckled. “This is Dalton Jennings and Nash Cantrell. They were with me when we rescued you that night. You’ll have to forgive Dalton for being clueless. He’s taken several classes on how to be charming, but unfortunately, he keeps failing them.”

She laughed and shook hands with both men. Dalton looked so chagrined, she couldn’t help but take pity on him. “Don’t worry about it, Dalton. I’m well aware of how much of a mess I looked that night. Thanks for being there with Chasen and the rest of your Team.”

The SEAL visibly relaxed, giving her another grin. “No problem. Just doing our job, ma’am.”

Dalton might have failed out of charm school—according to Chasen at least—but there wasn’t a woman alive who wouldn’t swoon over that Southern drawl.

“I know it was hard to tell with all the gear we had on,” Dalton continued. “But I was the one doing this.”

Dark eyes suddenly intense, he struck an action hero pose, arms lifted as if he were holding an imaginary machine gun. On either side of him, Chasen and Nash snorted in unison.

“You mean you were the one nearly running into every wall around you because the batteries in your NVGs were dying.” Nash pointed out drily, his dark eyes filled with amusement.

Dalton considered that a moment, then dropped the pose and shrugged. “That might have been me.”

Hayley laughed, unable to help herself. They were both funny—and seriously cute—but she had to admit she was glad when they took off a little while later, leaving her alone with Chasen.

“How is your ankle feeling?” he asked as his buddies walked off toward the pavilion.

“Much better, thanks,” she said.

He looked down pointedly at her foot where it peeked out from under her long skirt. She’d tried not to make it obvious, but she’d been standing with all her weight on her good foot so she could give the injured one a rest. Chasen lifted a brow as if he saw through the little white lie.

Hayley gave him a sheepish look. “Okay, you caught me. It still hurts a little. But it really is much better. Thanks to you.”

“How’s that?”

“If you hadn’t gotten there in time, a messed-up ankle would have been the least of my worries. I don’t know how I can ever repay you for saving my life.”

That playful grin returned. “I’m more than ready to call it even if you consider going out to dinner with me.”

If Chasen were any other guy, Hayley might consider making him work a little harder for a date. But she’d been more than ready to go out with him since he’d loaded her on that helicopter over in Africa. Heck, there’d been a time or two when she’d woken up from an especially nice dream involving the Navy

SEAL when she was ready to do a lot more than date the guy. Rip off his uniform and roll around on the floor with him being one thing that came to mind.

“Dinner sounds great,” she said, quite proud of her ability to maintain her composure.

“Friday night work for you?”

“Perfect.”

Hayley entered her number in his phone while he did the same with hers, then she gave him her address.

“I’ll see you at 1830 hours,” he said, then chuckled. “I mean, six-thirty.”

“I can’t wait,” she said, and meant it.

Touching his fingers to the brim of his hat in a causal salute, Chasen gave her another smile then strode off. Hayley let out a sigh as she watched him go. Damn, he made that blue camouflage uniform look good.
