Christmas 2015 Blog Review

Josey is an extremely strong woman, even if she doesn’t believe herself to be. Going to the Ryan family’s New Year’s Eve bash is a big step for her. One that could make or break her confidence.

Connor McCallum is a ladies man with a vow not to get exclusively involved with another woman, ever. His ex has left him bitter, and in a battle to get custody of their daughter. The Ryan’s party is just a means to hook up for a night.

This is when they meet a favorite scene.

Samantha arched a brow at him. “You best behave, Chase. I’m on a mission from your mother. This is a friend of hers, Miss Josey. I’m needed back in the kitchen, so you need to introduce her around and make her feel at home. Got it?”

“Yes, ma’am,” he said with a cheeky grin.

“I’ll take the first introduction,” the man next to him said, extending his hand. “I’m Connor McCallum.”

Josey placed her hand in his and he brought it to his mouth and kissed her knuckles. “Josey Clifford,” she replied.

Still holding her hand, he replied, “Where have you been hiding all my life, Josey Clifford?”

Josey laughed. “You didn’t seriously just say that to me, did you?”

Connor chuckled. “Well, it broke the ice, didn’t it?” He turned to the Ryan brothers. “I’m going to steal this lovely lady and get her a drink. Talk to you later.” He put his arm around her waist and started leading her away.

“A bit presumptuous aren’t you? I don’t recall being asked if I wanted to leave with you or if I wanted a drink.”

He looked down at her with those amazing eyes. “I’m sorry, I tend to take what I want and I want you.”

Tingles raced down her spine, damn. She cleared her throat. “Wow, you don’t waste any time, do you, Connor? Could we slow it down it bit?”

Connor slid his hand up and down her back. “I’ll try. Let’s get you that drink and find a place to sit down and talk.”

“That sounds good. I need a drink about now.”

“Oh, come on, I’m not that bad, am I?”

She arched a brow at him. “No, you’re that good,” she said with a flirty smile. He squeezed her hip. “Umm, I like that answer.” They walked up to the bar, Josey ordered a screwdriver and Connor got another beer. He led them to the side of the room and miraculously they found two empty chairs.

“Kismet,” he said.

“So it seems.”
Tammie. Love’s Resolution- Hoffa (Kindle Locations 93-111). Kindle Edition.

Josey’s honesty right from the start and the power of their first kiss has Connor questioning himself and his hard and fast rules.

As we follow this couple though a full year, we get to know them as intimately as they get to know each other. Through a custody battle, to the adjusting to a 10 year old who has skewed ideas of how to be popular, to the everyday things necessary to form a family.

The perfect book to start off 2017, full of Love, hope and off the charts heat.

Christmas 2015 Blog blurb

Justin Cooper wasn’t always the straight-laced Holiday Elementary School principal. In his youth, he broke all the rules and enjoyed being the bad Cooper brother. One Christmas Eve night he got a little too rowdy and things changed forever. Now the consequences of that fateful night have come back in full force and the myths of Christmas might be more real than he thought.

Rina Brewer is one of Santa’s elves. Not the tiny cute little toy maker, but the sexy, petite, energy filled bombshell kind. She’s come to Holiday to aid Justin in his new role as Santa’s executive, but as soon as she sees the sexy ex-bad boy, she realizes the job may be more than she bargained for.

As they work together to make this Christmas one to remember, an old foe has come to town to make sure that his holiday is the coldest yet.

Warning: Contains a perky elf who dreams of something more, a Christmas myth who may be a baddie, and a sexy ex-bad boy who craves Christmas cookies … and a certain perky blonde.

Christmas 2015 Blog Review

Justin finds it hard to believe what Rina tells him about himself even though it does explain some things.

This is a favorite scene right after they exercise Justin’s powers for the first time.

They stayed for a couple more hours and then left, leaving happier children than when they’d first arrived.

“That was amazing,” Justin said as they got in the car and started on the way back to Holiday.

She smiled right back at him and bounced in her seat. “I know. I’m so happy just watching those kids. You did it, Justin. It was you and your magic.”

He shook his head and took his hand off the steering wheel long enough to pat her knee. The tingles shot right up her body, and she bit her lip.

“You did most of it I think. All I did was release that tension, but you took care of it, and you made sure it didn’t hurt anyone or go wrong. You are the amazing one, Rina.”

She blushed and shook her head. “Let’s just say it was a team effort.”

“Deal. Now, I am hungry. I know we fed the kids there, but I didn’t feel comfortable eating their food since I wasn’t starving. Want to go to the diner and get some lunch?”

She looked at him, surprised. “Really? You want to spend more time together? I’d have thought you would’ve grown tired of me.”

“I don’t think I could ever get tired of you, Rina. Let’s go get some food.”

She warmed at his comment but didn’t say anything back. She wanted him, really wanted him. This couldn’t end well.
Ryan, Carrie Ann. Santa’s Executive (Holiday, Montana Book 2) (pp. 77 – 78). Kindle Edition.

As with most things in life nothing runs smoothly. Justin tries to use his powers on his own and gets some unexpected results in the school cafeteria.

Of course we need some added angst so Jack, Rina’s boss, shows up and all sorts of things start to go awry. Why he decided to be more of a jerk is extremely interesting.

A unique twist on Santa and his elves and another classic entity. Magic, love and some sizzling scenes to melt the snow around you.

Christmas 2015 Blog Review

Julia made a major mistake when she married Allen. She just didn’t know it at the time. Her parent’s death and her not being allowed to attend the funeral becomes the final straw. She’s escaped that horror and returned to her home town. When she pulls into the Bed and Breakfast owned by her once boyfriend Mark, she gets a surprise she wasn’t expecting. Mark’s parents have died and he is running the B & B.

Mark was pleasantly surprised at seeing Julia but he wanted to know the why’s of things. Things Julia isn’t quite ready to deal with. This is a favorite scene from that first night.

“Have you gone to your parents’ house yet?” By the way she continued to look at the table, he figured that was a big no and maybe he should have continued with his silent trip down memory lane. But he’d really been curious why she’d never come home for their funeral. It’d been way out of character for the person he knew her to be.

“No, I’ve not gone by there. I’m not ready to face that right now.”

“I put flowers on their graves when I went and took flowers to my parents.” Her eyes met his.

“Thanks.”

“It’s no big deal. It’s not like you wouldn’t do it for me.” He stood up and picked up his empty coffee cup. “Would you like some more?”

“No, this is good.” He walked over to the sink and rinsed the cup before placing it in the dishwasher.

“So, do you have a plan from here, or are you just winging it?” He leaned one hip against the countertop, crossing his arms over his chest.

“First thing I need to do is find a job.”

So she planned on staying. This was a good thing. She’d always wanted to become a teacher in Edinboro. In fact, that had been one of the reasons they’d broken up the summer after their senior year. He had wanted to move to a larger city and become an FBI agent, and she had wanted to stay here. They became angry with each other when neither of them would give an inch in their proposed plan for their lives. The argument that had ensued led to their breakup. Funny thing, in the end, he’d come back to Edinboro and found out that she’d gotten married and moved away.

“I guess you plan on applying to teach in the schools around here.”

Her gaze dropped to the table again. “No. I never got to finish college. I’ll have to find something else.”

Not the answer he would’ve guessed. One thing Julia had always done was achieve her goals. Falling short had never been an option.

“Well, I happen to have an opening here for a housekeeper. My housekeeper Linda’s first baby is due any day now. She’s worked here for the past three years now and would still be working if I hadn’t made her take time off. She kept trying to go into early labor from all the moving around she’d been doing.”

“Well. I don’t know. I wouldn’t want to take her job away from her. I mean is she going to need to return to work after the baby?

“He smiled. “No. We worked it out so that she could take a year off with the baby. So if you want the job, it’s yours.”

He watched as she took a long, slow drink of her coffee.

She swallowed and put the cup back on the table. “Okay. I’ll take it. I can start in the morning.”

“You don’t have to start that soon if there are things you want to take care of first. I mean, if you want to go to the cemetery or go through your parents’ things…”

She pushed back from the table and snatched up her cup. “I already told you I’m not ready for that.” She walked over and rinsed her cup and placed it in the dishwasher. “I better get to bed. What room did you put my things in?”

“Hey… I didn’t mean…” He reached for her hand, but she flinched and pulled back from him. He let his hand fall back to his side. “I wasn’t trying to upset you. If you want to start tomorrow then that’ll be fine. I put your stuff in my old room on the third floor.”

Her head came up, and her gaze fixed on him. “That’s not necessary. I could stay in one of the guest rooms on the second floor.”

“Nonsense. Besides they are all full anyway.”

“Okay then. I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Yeah… goodnight,” he said to her retreating form.
Cavanaugh, Virginia. Winter’s Shadow (Kindle Locations 129-163). Virginia Cavanaugh. Kindle Edition.

While not the best start, these two do find they still love each other. Julia however has problems that have managed to follow her here. Now she has to decide if she can tell it all to Mark and still have him in her life.

A suspenseful tale, with quite a few twists and turns to keep you guessing. Plus some steamy scenes as they rekindle the flames.

Christmas 2015 Blog Review

Grace Malloy the matriarch of the Malloy family had invited Dr. Cross and his Niece Anita to Christmas Eve Supper. An emergency arrives just as the driver from the Ranch is ready to drive them. Anita decides to stay behind until doctor they have covering arrives.

When Colin arrives for Christmas supper he is dispatched to retrieve the Doctor and bring her to supper. This Christmas Eve Storm coupled with a crazy driver, has Colin’s truck spinning off the road. Uninjured but unable to free his truck from the ditch he hitches a ride on a plow and walks the rest of the way into town.

This is a favorite scene.

Colin trudged through drifts that in places were nearly to his waist. His dark Stetson was mounded with a layer of white. His breath plumed in the frigid air.

When he reached the town, it looked otherworldly, until he realized what was wrong. There were no lights. No blinking red and green on the gaudy tree in D and B’s Diner. No sparkly gold lights at Gert and Teddy Gleason’s new fancy spa next to their barbershop. And no winking welcome sign at Clay Olmsted’s saloon.

He made his way to the clinic, which was in total darkness.

His heart dropped. With the power out and the roads too clogged with snow to drive her car, poor Anita would have had to walk in the darkness to her uncle’s place across town, nearly a mile.

He gave a sigh of disgust. He’d come this far. There was no turning back now. Though the other side of town felt like the other side of the moon right now, he had no choice but to see this through.

He was about to turn away when he spotted some movement inside the glass doors of the clinic.

“Hello.” He pounded on the heavy outer door with both fists.

“Who’s there?” He pressed his face to the door and struggled to see through the frosty glass.

There was more movement, closer now. Suddenly the door was opened and Anita seemed as astonished to see him as he was to see her.

“Colin.” Even in the darkness, her relief was evident. Without a thought to what she was doing, she threw her arms around his neck, her fingers curling into the collar of his parka, as though holding on for dear life.

“Anita.” At her embrace, he felt the quick curls of pleasure. Their faces were touching. He breathed her in, and the sweet smell of her perfume went straight to his heart. “I was afraid you might have left for your uncle’s house.” His breath feathered the hair at her temple.

She looked up, her lips brushing his cheek. “I couldn’t leave the clinic without someone here to handle emergencies. Dr. Miller from Rock Creek was supposed to be here, but I guess he couldn’t make it through the storm.”

Christmas 2015 Blog Review

For Christmas Eve I found this to be the perfect book to review. Nicolas gets delayed in the village where he has sold his hand-made mechanical toys. The sales will provide for him and his wife over the coming year. His wife is ill and he is anxious to be on his way home. This is a favorite scene as he starts his journey home.

“What did I say?” Matilda grinned at Nicholas. “You even have time to make it to Steinhalt if you hurry.”

Weak sunlight, a welcome change from the blinding white snow, shone as Nicholas completed his carving. “I intend to. Thank you so much for your hospitality,” he replied. “For you.” He held out the carved horse. “If I come through again, I will paint it.”

Matilda’s smile lit her face and warmed Nicholas’s heart.

“I’d better get Rudy steamed up and hitched.” Nicholas shrugged his old cloak over his shoulders and pulled on his thick gloves.

“There’s plenty of split wood in the shed, please take some. You’ve more than repaid us for your stay.”

Normally, Nicholas would not have accepted, but it would save him time and he needed to return quickly to his wife. “Thank you.”

The chilly air nipped at his exposed cheeks as he left the inn, but the sunshine warmed him. He smiled as he stomped through the snow to the barn where his wagon and Rudy waited.

Nicholas patted the horse’s metal shoulder. “Rudy, my friend, let’s get you steaming.” Rudy’s eye swiveled and an ear twitched, but he did not have enough power for anything else, yet.

Nicholas flipped up the hatch on the big horse’s boiler and loaded in as much wood as would fit. Next he secured the hatch and pushed the igniter. After a moment, steam hissed and Rudy’s nose glowed red.

The mechanical horse neighed and pawed the ground as the steam built, anxious to be on his way.

“Easy there, we’ll be on the trail soon enough.”

Nicholas checked the harness and found it secure. Finally he loaded enough wood into the wagon to get him home.

“Okay, Rudy, take her out.” Nicholas stepped back to give Rudy room.

The mechanical complied with a toss of his head, pulling the wagon out into the snow.

Nicholas shut the barn door and climbed into his sleigh. He pulled the lever that raised the wheels above the level of the runners, and the wagon, now a sleigh, settled into the snow. He took up the reins and flicked them, urging Rudy forward a few more steps.

“Nicholas!” Matilda waved from the doorway. “Here, before you leave.”

Rudy pulled the sleigh to the front of the inn and stopped, issuing a steamy nicker as Matilda came out into the snow with a basket in her hands.

“Provisions for a few days.”

“Matilda, you’ve already given me fuel for my journey.”

“Yes, fuel for your wonderful Rudy, now here is fuel for you. Take care, and we look forward to seeing you next year.”

Matilda placed the basket in his sleigh and stepped back, the cool air turning her cheeks pink. She waved.

Nicholas pushed one more button and the magnets that held the small balls inside the sleigh bells released. The merry jingle filled the town as he and Rudy trotted toward home.

The generosity of the innkeeper is just the beginning. I absolutely love Rudy and the toymaker. The examples of kindness, sacrifice and love are inspiring.

Kismet and Cocoa
Dominique Eastwick
When true love shows up on her doorstep, will Abby let him in or will she turn him away? Sometimes Kismet is all you need.

Christmas 2015 Blog Review - sm

Preston Greene is a photojournalist taking a break to forget some of the sights he’s seen. On his way home he stops to take pictures of a gorgeous flowing sculpture reflecting in the sunset. When he returns to his motorcycle he finds a kitten has curled up in his helmet. No doubt to escape the rapidly cooling night. Seeing smoke from a chimney he hopes it is the home of the kitten or that the owner has a barn it can live in.

Abby is the artist responsible for the sculpture Preston has just photographed. It’s her cabin that Preston approaches to as a possible home for the kitten. This is a favorite scene.

He hadn’t reached the door when it flew open and a woman with a baseball bat clutched in both hands screamed, “I told you I am not interested. Leave me alone.”

“I have a kitten,” he said for lack of anything else and praying it would stop her from hitting him full on with her Louisville Slugger.

“Oh my.” She lowered the bat and blinked twice. “Sorry. I thought you were someone else.”

“Thank god for that.” He relaxed, reaching into his jacket, but when she raised her weapon again, he took his hands out in a sign of nonaggression. “I was just reaching for the kitten. Curious if it was yours or, at the very least, if you had a barn it could live in.”

The little furball rustled around and, as if knowing he was being talked about, dug his claws into Preston’s shirt, started to make his way up, and, when its head popped into sight, meowed.

“You do have a kitten,” she whispered, leaning in to see the animal better and smiling the way people do all the world over at seeing babies of any breed, soft and sweet.

“Yes, I do.”

“Come in. It’s too cold out here.” She stepped back and opened the door wide.
Eastwick, Dominique. Sweet Christmas Kisses: A Sweet Holiday Anthology (Kindle Locations 115-125). Decadent Publishing. Kindle Edition.

The almost instant attraction is difficult for Preston to comprehend and his sister isn’t entirely onboard with his dating Abby.

Abby’s heart is torn when she misinterprets a scene after Preston breaks a date to do something with his sister.

Now Preston has to find a way to come to terms with his feelings and break through the walls Abby puts up.

A wonderful story of love at first sight, with the added angst of a bullying ex.

by L.J. Garland
Tabitha isn’t crazy—even though every guy she’s dated has ended their relationship by calling her exactly that. Then a handsome man awakens on her sofa, and everything changes… Could he be the one?

Christmas 2015 Blog Review - sm

Tabitha owns the Cat Café, a place where you can get coffee a snack and possible find a cat connection.

When CEO Noah Winters falls asleep on one of the couches after an exhausting day he gets quite the surprise as he wakes. This is a favorite scene.

Noah shifted his gaze higher, discovering a heart-shaped face with high cheekbones and a pair of bright blue eyes that reminded him of a crisp winter sky. Reaching up, she tucked a bit of her chin-length, white-blonde hair behind her ear just below where a few soft waves had been pulled up on one side, a sparkly clip of some type holding it in place. His own body thrummed in response.

“That’s better.” The corners of her wide, lush mouth curved up into a smile, and his heart gave a hard knock against his sternum. The word angel echoed in his mind. “Man, you came into the café then zonked like there was no tomorrow. One sec you were chilling with Rudy, the next you crashed.”

“Yeah.” The word scraped over his tongue, sounding much like a frog with laryngitis. He cleared his throat and tried to sit up but found he couldn’t move.

She giggled, the tenor trills a sweet accompaniment to the deep thrumming around him. As she rushed forward, his chest tightened. For some reason, he wanted to make her laugh again. To bask in the joy bursting from within her. Could he?

Leaning over, she scooped up a large black cat and set it on the floor. “Seems you’re quite the fur magnet.” Her gaze moved from one end of the couch to the other, and, at last, landed on his. “Wow, I swear every cat in the café is lying on or near you.” The corner of her mouth quirked up as she moved another cat—weights lifting from his legs. “Even Mr. Fluffbottom.” She gathered a huge white Persian from the pillow next to his hip. “And that’s really saying something. Mr. Fluffbottom likes his space.”

She set him on the floor, and the cat trundled off, its duster-like tail high in the air. With soft words of encouragement, she scooched the remaining cats from the couch then straightened and brushed her hands against one another. “There. You’re free.”

He hoisted himself upright and rotated, setting his feet on the lime-green shag rug peeking from beneath the coffee table. He lifted his eyes to hers. “Thank you…?”

“Tabitha. But everyone calls me Tabbi. No idea why.” She made a show of glancing around the café then shrugged. “Go figure.” She tilted her head, white-blonde waves shifting to reveal the bottom half of her ear. Three jeweled studs winked at him. “And you’re very welcome.”

“Noah.” He held out his hand. “Noah Winters.”
Garland, L.J.. Sweet Christmas Kisses: A Sweet Holiday Anthology (Kindle Locations 709-727). Decadent Publishing. Kindle Edition.

This begins an unusual relationship one that grows quickly and fizzles almost as fast when he discovers her secret and she finds his flashdrive.

A quirky story with lots of heart, a bit of suspicion and a cat that will ring his way into your heart.

Meri Chris Mess
by Dara Fraser
Meredith accepted the teaching position at Oak Springs looking for a new start but when a flood destroys everything in her classroom, she fears she’ll never be able to save her fledgling music program and certainly not in time for the Christmas show. The children will be devastated. But can a handsome and understanding firefighter along with the caring townspeople turn a mess into a Merry Christmas?

Christmas 2015 Blog Review - sm

Meri first meets Chris as she is surveying the devastation that is her music room. Sloshing through water to see if any of the instruments were salvageable. Chris was waiting for his Captain to sort through everything with the principal, and helps her get the instruments were possibly salvageable out of the room.

A favorite scene is when she comes up with a solution when the Principal suggests a play instead of the Christmas Concert.

“Not cancelling, exactly, just making it easier.”

“The kids already know all the songs.” Panic laced her voice. True, they had no instruments, and the score was original so they had no recordings, but she could make it work. She had to. “The kids helped write the songs.”

“I didn’t mean to upset you.” The woman handed her a tissue. Great. She was crying. “We…I just thought it would be easier.”

“Compromise?” She blew her nose in a most unladylike fashion.

“How so?” Ms. Snyder offered her a second tissue, and she took it to blot her eyes. Some adult she was. “Maybe…maybe we could do both.”

The principal leaned in, a very good sign. The woman planned to at least hear her out. Too bad Meri had zero ideas where the plan was heading. “That way the kids can still sing the music they have worked so hard to learn and, in some cases, write, and parents could see their cuties all dressed up for the play?”

“Hmmm, that could work.” She seemed to be mulling it over, so Meri let silence fill the air. “It might get long, though.

“It will. But—” She was going to add a happy but and that made her smile almost as much as the plan beginning to come together in her mind. “We can invite the folks from  the local senior center and have an intermission with cocoa and cookies.” Meri crossed her fingers, now holding the tissues. Who doesn’t love cookies? Right? This would be a slam dunk. It had to be. A concert without accompaniment would bore parents to tears. This, though, this could be a game changer and set the bar for future years.

“We would have to switch the date and time.”

“Yes, that’s true. Thursday evening would mean a super-late night and, frankly, from volunteering at the senior center, I can attest to the fact that anything after five is considered a late night for many of them.”

Ms. Snyder chuckled.

Nighttime driving was practically a social status at the center. Mr. Webber was considered quite the catch by many of the single woman as the only car owner who could drive at night. “I can stop by the center on my way home and talk to the director. See what day and time she thinks would work best. I needed to talk to them about using their piano to record some music anyway.” Their instrument sounded worse than the school’s had pre-flooding, but some music would be better than none, making recording from it her next plan of action while she waited to hear where the grant proposal decisions fell. Most of the grants focused on the upcoming next school year, decreasing the likelihood of answers coming in soon.

“And I can talk to the teachers who offered to help,” Mrs. Snyder said.

The teachers meant well. They had welcomed her with open arms, and there didn’t seem to be a mean one in the bunch.

“I know they are going to love this idea,” the principal went on. “They just started the classroom grandparents program, so this will blend in perfectly.”

Meri meets up with Chris once more at the senior center, where they were doing an inspection. This leads to a date for cocoa and more getting to know you. after she makes the arrangements for the show and gets overwhelmed by the generosity of the seniors.

Chris also has a secret that makes her Christmas even better.

A beautiful story of love, giving and caring.

The Little Match Girl and the Billionaire
by Kate Richards
A fire on Christmas Eve, leaves Noelle homeless and holding a box of abandoned kittens. The handsome stranger whisking her off to a mansion on the outskirts of town may change her holiday darkness to sweet Christmas Kisses.

Christmas 2015 Blog Review - sm

As Noelle’s business and apartment burns to the ground she stumbles down the alley finding three near frozen kittens. In shock she wanders and almost gets run over by a limo. Charles, shocked at almost hitting someone, takes her to his home only she thinks he’s the driver, an employee of a wealthy man who’s gone for the holiday. This is a favorite scene as he realizes what she thinks.

He didn’t want to be alone on Christmas. Not on his favorite day of the entire year. If she wasn’t too tired, he’d lure her downstairs for some eggnog and tidbits before he tucked her into the guest bed. Maybe with a kiss on the forehead. Not on those rosebud lips. No, because he wouldn’t be able to stop at one, and he wouldn’t kiss her unless she knew who she kissed back.

Forcing a cheerful grin, he said, “Nobody else is here on Christmas Eve.”

She nodded. “With the boss away, he doesn’t need everyone around getting holiday pay. I guess that’s why rich people stay rich. They don’t waste a dime.”

She was so going to hate him when she learned his identity. He’d never be getting a taste of her sweet lips. Maybe he’d kiss her anyway. Once. No. Yes.

Shrugging, he focused on the here and now. “Are you planning to take the kittens into the shower with you?”

Noelle glanced down at the bundle she still held and frowned. “No, of course not.”

Approaching, he unfolded her coat and retrieved the sleeping pair. Tucking them in the same big pocket with their brother, he gave her a little push toward the bathroom. “Okay, then scoot. After you get cleaned up, if you’re not too tired, join me downstairs for a cup of eggnog by the fire.”

A crinkle formed in her brow. “Are you sure you aren’t going to get in trouble for taking over the whole house?” How cute. She worried about his future.

He winked. “I won’t tell if you don’t.”

“Never.” Her sincere, innocent tone made his heart thump harder.

Why did the prettiest, sweetest woman—someone who rescued kittens in the cold when she had just lost her home and business in a tragic fire—have to be prejudiced against successful billionaires?

Anastasia Vitsky
Sharie Black couldn’t care less about the boy next door, or at least not in “that” way. That is, until a personal tragedy creates a Christmas miracle.

Christmas 2015 Blog Review - sm

This story follows Sharie through the years. A spoiled child, who likes to get her way.

Richie the geek boy next door is a constant in her life. He loved her from the beginning but she is too blind to see what is before her.

This is a scene from Sharie’s thirteenth birthday sleepover. An example of the childish cruelty that is present in young teens.

Mindy sits forward, pushing the bowl of popcorn aside. “Let’s deliver a love letter to Richie.” She dissolves into giggles, and Tiffany and I join after a beat.

“Who from?” It’s mean, but the thought of owl-eyed Richie discovering the letter makes me laugh. He’d be more puzzled than anything, and he wouldn’t take it seriously.

“From the birthday girl, of course.” Mindy grins at Tiffany, who takes a pen from my desk and uncaps it. She holds out a sheet of stationery edged in a double row of pink and red hearts. “Tell Richie you love him madly.”

Richie, who used to follow me around and say we’d get married when we grew up? I bite my lip not to laugh loud enough for Mom and Dad to wake up, and I take the pen and paper. “He’ll figure out it’s me.” I write as Mindy directs, though.

“Tell him it’s you. Sign it, your next door admirer who loves you forever.” Tiffany’s caught the giggles from Mindy, and they egg me on with one suggestion after another. I can’t keep up, and I have to wave at them to quiet down while I catch up.

“What if he thinks I really mean it?” I frown at the paper, wondering whether poor Richie could be that eager—or dense. Remembering his valentine from last year, I wonder if this is such a good idea, after all.

“He’ll get over it.” Mindy bounces on her sleeping bag, and she takes the paper from me before I’ve finished. “Looks good,” she proclaims, handing it to Tiffany. “But you forgot to say you love him madly.”

“I’ll add it.” I insert a caret with the word “madly” after “love” and “you.” “Better?”
Vitsky, Anastasia. Sweet Christmas Kisses: A Sweet Holiday Anthology (Kindle Locations 3546-3559). Decadent Publishing. Kindle Edition.

As these girls grow up the cruelness vanishes but the demanding nature Sharie has developed does not. At least not until everything backfires on her.

A journey of growth, in more ways than one. I would really have liked to see a slower pace toward the end. I felt the relationship didn’t get a chance to develop.

Christmas 2015 Blog Review

What happens when you’re avoiding all things Christmas and barricade yourself in your room at the rehab center? You get your feisty take no prisoners case nurse in your face in her unique style to find out why.

Noël is subtle but determined to find out why Rebel is avoiding the holiday everyone said he loved. She is more frustrated with the fact that he skipped his physio and as a result was having cramping and his stumps were raw and irritated. She has her ways however and this is a favorite scene.

“Hell, you’re going to make me talk about it.” Damn it. He didn’t want to get into this.

No response.

“It’s a little childish to hold me hostage in the car.” And she never behaved like a child.

She leaned her head back against the seat and directed her attention to the landscape beyond the windshield.

“Fuck.” He punched his fist at the roof of her car then flexed his sore hand. “I skipped physio because they plastered Christmas everywhere. Music. Decorations. Hell, one of the therapists was dressed like an elf.”

Merry-fucking-shove-it-down-your-throat season! Resentment flash-fired through his system and he barely managed to restrain the urge to punch the roof of her car again. Once made a point, doing it twice meant losing control.

A Marine didn’t lose control.

“Okay.” Noël shut the car off and climbed out, leaving him to stare at the empty space where she’d been. It took her a minute to extract his wheelchair and then she arrived at the door. “Let’s go.” The temperature outside had dipped again, flushing icy air into the heated interior.

Still gaping at her, Rebel didn’t argue as she helped him swing out and into the chair. One pause to grab his prosthetics and then she locked the car with a flick of a button and headed for the main doors.

“That’s it?” He half-turned to keep an eye on her face.

“It’s cold. We need to go to Ortho and you still have physio.” She didn’t slow her pace. The automatic doors opened with a swish and the cold wind chased them inside. Instead of heading to the residential wing where his room was located, she turned right to follow the indoor walkway leading to the gymnasium and physical therapy wing.

Ortho was along the way.

Clamping his teeth shut on his next words before they could escape, he drummed his fingers on the arms of the chair. Noel always had a comment or, at the very least, a comeback. The silence wore away at him. Ortho took fifteen minutes and the tech promised to refit the sockets and they could swing by to try them on the next day.

The tension winding in his gut tightened the closer they got to the gym. Even the long walkways hadn’t escaped the glitter of Christmas. Evergreen garlands with red velvet bows hung every six feet. Any second now, he’d have to endure rocking around the Christmas tree when all he wanted was to run the holiday over with a reindeer.

Further irritated by the musical direction of his thoughts, he almost missed the main doors to the gym as Noel bypassed them.

“Hey, you missed our stop.”

“No I didn’t.” She went another hundred feet and bumped the big metallic button on the wall with her hip to open another set of doors.

“Um, this is the officers’ wing.” Officers and enlisted did mingle, but senior staff had their own workout area and he was a non-com— or at least he had been.

“Really? And since I just started working here yesterday, I guess I missed the memo.” Snappy, insubordinate, and bordering on rude— just the way he liked her.

Decorated in dark wood tones and lit by high windows, the gym was curiously quiet; no one worked out on the machines and no music piped in over the speakers. Better yet, no pine-scented anything waited to burn his nostrils. The hot ball of knots in his gut loosened.

Kara Childs strolled up to meet them, dressed in her familiar scrubs and wearing a friendly, if cautious smile. Of all his physical therapists, she definitely ranked among his favorites. “Well, well, well— look what the Noël dragged in.”

Heat burned the tops of his ears. Like Noël , Kara had been gone for the holiday weekend but, apparently, she’d heard about his mutiny.

“Great, you got my text.” The welcome in Noël’s voice stroked over his ragged nerves.

“What text?” When had she had time to text?

She squeezed his shoulder. “I sent a text to Kara while the ortho looked at your fitting. Told her you needed to make up for some lost time and would prefer the North Pole-free gym.”

His bad mood did a full one-eighty, and relief radiated down his spine until he nearly sagged in the chair. “Thank you.”
Long, Heather. Have Yourself a Marine Christmas (Always a Marine series Book 20) (Kindle Locations 311-349). Decadent Publishing Company, LLC. Kindle Edition.

Even while giving in to his petulance regarding the holiday Noël is plotting a way for him to find his Christmas spirit again.

The revelation that he feels a lot more for her than just his case nurse, a shopping trip and a little girl’s Christmas wish become the catalyst.

Lots of heat between Noël and Rebel, add in some tears both sad and happy. It all combines to make this one of my favorite Christmas stories!

LOVE IS THE GREATEST RISK OF ALL

After multiple tours of duty, Brandon Forte returns to his hometown on a personal mission: to open a facility for military service dogs like Haydn, a German shepherd who’s seen his share of combat and loss. It also brings him back to Sophie Kim, a beacon of light in his life . . . and the one woman he can’t have. But Forte’s success means he’s made enemies in high places. Enemies who are now after Sophie . . .

When Forte enlisted and left without saying goodbye, Sophie did her best to move on. But with her first love back in town, looking sexier than ever, she’s constantly reminded of what they could have had. Then after he risks himself for her, Sophie realizes she’ll have to put her life in the hands of the man who broke her heart, knowing the danger -and the sparks between them- could consume them both.

Christmas 2015 Blog Review

This one starts off with a bang, literally. As Brandon has Haydn (one of their new dogs) out to work with his new prosthetic, he runs into Sophie long time friend and accountant for Hopes Crossing. They walk her to her car and while she is putting her packages the trunk, Haydn gets Brandon’s attention. This gives him just enough time to get them to relative safety before the explosion. Haydn stays with Sophie while Brandon calls for help and secures the area. The question is who put a bomb on her car and why. This is the excerpt given for this Tour, but it’s one of my favorite scenes so I’m putting it here.

Between one moment and the next, he was right there next to her, kneeling so they were face to face. She let out the air in her lungs in a rush, not sure of what she wanted to do or what he was planning to do. She parted her lips but didn’t say anything, didn’t want to put another question out there for him to address before he answered the one she really wanted to know.

Because she was hoping he was here for her—not his childhood friend—but for the very adult version of her who’d been waiting for him all this time.

Faster than she could react, his lips caught hers. The contact rushed through her in a lightning shot of surprise. Years of bottled-up frustration bubbled up and she leaned into him with a soft gasp.

And then he pulled back and she was left trying to catch her breath.

Slowly, carefully, he slid his arms around her back and under her knees. He cradled her against his chest and tucked her head under his chin. Circled as she was in his embrace, he held her close. He pressed his lips against her hair.

“That was too close yesterday, Sophie.” His voice was low, gruff, and almost cracked with emotion. “The thought of losing you just about killed me.”

From this point it’s not only about them beginning a new relationship but also keeping Sophie safe. I loved the visit to the Cat Café and that Sophie adopts one of the cats. Haydn’s reaction to the little fluff of fur was interesting to observe. But Haydn’s role is for the most part helping keep Sophie out of harms way. Sophie’s name for the cat had me giggling as I tried to follow her logic for Tessaract. I absolutely love these animals and how they interact with Brandon and Sophie.

Now Sophie and Brandon is something else entirely. Slow and easy but not. Lots of conflicting emotions and other things that need to be resolved.

Fast paced with lots of action in and out of the bedroom. I really can’t wait for more of these books!
