A cowboy, a former cowgirl, and their second chance…

Darren Buttars is cool, collected, and quiet–and utterly devastated when his girlfriend of nine months, Farrah Irvine, breaks up with him because he wanted her to ride her horse in a parade.

But Farrah doesn’t ride anymore, a fact she made very clear to Darren. When they run into each other again in small-town Island Park, the spark between them is as hot as ever. But they can’t seem to agree on anything and end up arguing as much as they kiss.

Farrah returned to her childhood home with so much baggage, she doesn’t know where to start with the unpacking. Darren’s the only Buttars brother who isn’t married, and he wants to make Island Park his permanent home–with Farrah. Can they find their way through the heartache to achieve a happily-ever-after together?

Winter Blog Review

Every once in a while I take a break from the ultra steamy romance and read something on the sweeter side. This book is in that category. It’s got a hint of religion, but not preachy.

Darren and Farrah had broken up years ago and she disappeared. Now she’s back in town. Farrah has a lot of issues, all stemming from something that happened on the ranch where Darren now works and lives.

Darren knows Farrah’s back and she appears to be avoiding him. Living around the same small town, she won’t be able to hide forever. They meet up at a most unexpected place, at least to Darren.

Their first encounter sets up part of the mystery, but the encounter that begins a new relationship is the one that surprises Darren the most. His sanctuary, his ‘adopted’ family.

So he drove north and west from Steeple Ride, from Island Park, until he found the single-lane road out to the farm where he’d been spending more and more time since Logan had left. He’d come before Logan had left too, but not nearly as often as he did now. The owners let him come in the evenings and check on the plants. Sometimes he helped them harvest firewood they’d use to keep their fish tanks toasty during the long, cold Vermont winters. He always took home something they’d grown, along with their love and acceptance, and a lighter heart.

He didn’t dare tell any of his brothers that Jim and Corey Bybee had almost become surrogate parents for him. The brothers had been so united in their grief after their parents had died that Darren felt disloyal needing someone else. But he absolutely needed someone. And if that meant he spent his evenings on an organic farm with two people old enough to be his parents, he’d take them.

And they had taken him, too. Just the way he was. Surly sometimes. Quiet always. Sure, Corey asked him questions until he thought he’d explode, but she seemed just as satisfied with one-word answers as she did when he gave her a whole sentence.

Jim sat on the porch most evenings, whittling, something Darren had always wanted to learn to do. He parked in front of the giant farmhouse and grabbed his knife—a birthday gift from Jim last January—from the middle console. If he could just find the right piece of wood, take his chair on the porch, and get his fingers working, maybe he could forget about the encounter with Farrah at the cemetery. Maybe he wouldn’t feel so flattened by Sam and Bonnie’s wedded and pregnant bliss.

Jim wasn’t on the porch, but Darren didn’t care. He didn’t need an invitation anymore. He could enter their house if he wanted to, open the fridge and find something to eat. Heck, Corey would chastise him if he didn’t do that.

He went around to the backyard instead, scanning the ground for a good piece of basswood. Jim grew the trees in clumps, and made marvelous things from them. Dressers, tables, chairs, the mailbox at the end of the lane. Anything he could envision, he could mold out of wood. Today, Darren just wanted something small, and he spotted a long switch of wood that would make a perfect spoon for Bonnie.

Just touching it soothed him, and he settled on the front porch to strip away the bark and start carving the form he wanted. The handle emerged, and he added flowers to it, his fingers working without direction from his mind. He thought of Bonnie, and what she’d like, and the spoon simply presented itself.

He’d just started the bowl when the front door opened and Jim stepped out. Darren had never seen the man wearing anything but a pair of jean overalls and a gray T-shirt, at least when out on the farm. Today was no different.

“Hey, bud.” He grinned down at Darren as if he was truly happy to see him. “Didn’t think I’d see you for a few days. Aren’t your brother and his wife in town?”

“Yep.” Darren kept the knife going, the shavings gathering against his cowboy boots. He angled his head down a bit to ensure the brim of his hat hid his face.

“Corey put together a basket for them.” Jim sighed as he settled into his chair, but he didn’t have a knife this evening.

“Great.” Darren didn’t want to talk about Sam and Bonnie. Didn’t want to talk at all.

“Staying for dinner?”

“If I can.”

“Of course you can.” Jim got the hint after that, because he didn’t say anything else. Soon enough, soft snores came from the chair on the other side of the small table that Corey kept decorated with flowers from the farm. During the winter, one of Jim’s ice sculptures became the centerpiece.

Darren slowed his knife and looked up. Across the road stretched fields and trees, all part of the Bybee’s land. He’d never felt such peace in all his life. He loved Vermont, especially this little corner of it, and he closed his eyes and offered a prayer of gratitude that God had brought him here.

Even if it had taken a plane crash to kill his parents. Even if it had taken his three brothers leaving him behind. Even if.

He opened his eyes as the sound of a vehicle approached. A few minutes passed before the ritzy, black sedan rounded the bend in the road and kept on coming.

Darren dropped his knife, glad it didn’t impale his foot when it hit the porch with a thud. He knew that car. Knew the woman wearing the oversized shades behind the wheel.

Couldn’t believe Farrah had come out to this farm when she wouldn’t come to his.
Liz Isaacson. Coming Home to Steeple Ridge: A Buttars Brothers Novel (Steeple Ridge Romance Book 4) (Kindle Locations 271-308). AEJ Creative Works. Kindle Edition.

Now Farrah’s reasons for being there had nothing to do with him but Darren still feels betrayed.

He has to get over his anger, and she is going to have to figure out a lot of things.

I must say these two really tried my patience. It bothered me that Farrah had way too much baggage and really wasn’t addressing any of it.

While Darren did set her on the right path, he certainly didn’t help by wanting the relationship to resume right away.

Lots of secrets, pain, frustration and memories.

Perhaps if I had started the series the beginning I would have enjoyed this book more.

Winter Blog Review

This book is what it’s all about. The threats that can come from inside, the power of computers and the way innocents can be implicated.

Luke is suffering from empty nest syndrome. His niece Naomi has headed off to college and he is at loose ends. This mission is exactly what he though he needed to feel useful again.

Lyra is the single mom of twins. Now that in itself is a challenge but she also has flexible hours with her job as a software developer with a company owned by a friend of her brother.

Luke goes undercover as the maintenance person of Lyra’s building. A perk, the apartment that goes with the job is across the hall from Lyra. Now while the data they have is pointing to her, Luke can’t quite believe she is involved, at least not consciously.

This is a favorite scene when Luke meets Lyra and her girls.

Mrs. Lawson fanned her face. “Prepare yourself, honey. Hot and steamy hunk in there. I think he might have melted my glasses.”

Lyra’s feet slowed. “Huh?”

“You’ll see.” Mrs. Lawson gave Lyra a look as she continued to fan herself. “I’ve always hoped maybe you and my Murphy would get together, but even I have to admit he can’t compete with this.

Mrs. Lawson walked away before Lyra could formulate an answer. She was a little stuck on the idea of her and Mrs. Lawson’s grandson, Murphy, together. Mrs. Lawson had never mentioned that, and Lyra could honestly say she’d never once gone there in her own head.

Not that there was anything wrong with Mrs. Lawson’s grandson. He was just so . . . well, so . . . nice. And tame. And, well, boring, if Lyra really thought about it.

Not to mention, he hadn’t once seemed interested in her. In fact, she thought he might be gay, but they’d never talked enough for her to know for sure.

“Huh,” Lyra said, again, this time a statement instead of a question and very much to herself as she followed the girls inside since Mrs. Lawson hadn’t bothered to stick around long enough to explain anything.

Holy Mary Mother of . . . The thought plain petered out in Lyra’s head as her brain melted. At least only Mrs. Lawson’ glasses had fallen victim. For Lyra, it seemed her whole damned head had suffered the damage.

The man in front of her was not tame in the least. He was nothing short of a god. The kind of chiseled jaw you read about, dark brown hair that somehow screamed for a girl to paw at it, and five o’clock shadow to die for. That was to say nothing of his body. He was currently kneeling before her girls.

“Are you a real superhero?” Alyssa was asking. Lyra had noticed the shirt the man was wearing as well, though likely not for the same reasons her daughter had.

Lyra was looking at the way it pulled taught over broad muscled shoulders and a chest that made her breath catch. Alyssa was likely referring to the Captain America logo on the front of it.

The man raised soul-searing eyes and winked at Lyra before lowering his voice to answer Alyssa with a conspirator’s whisper. “I’m not supposed to give away my secret identity. That’s lesson number one of being a good superhero.” He assumed a more bashful look. “Honestly, though, I’m still working on my superhero identity. I’m a little new at it and I haven’t ironed out all the kinks.”

Kink. Lyra shook her head at her reaction to the man. This was not at all like her. Then again, it wasn’t like she dated a whole lot. Being a single mom of four-year-old twins could take a toll on a girl’s social life. She stepped closer and put her hand on Alyssa’s shoulder. Not that it would slow down her little girl’s questions. Alyssa wasn’t shy about going after what she wanted, and answers were no exception. Prentiss, on the other hand, was happy to stand silently by and listen as Alyssa did all the work.

Lyra couldn’t help but notice she was listening avidly, though. She was as interested in the answers as Alyssa was. “Can you introduce us to Wonder Woman?”

The man let out a big laugh at Alyssa’s question and tugged at one of the twisty pigtails framing her face. “Sorry. Like I said, I’m new at this. I have no clout with Wonder Woman yet. She’s a little high up in the ranks, you know?”

He stood to his full height and thrust a hand toward Lyra. “I’m Luke Reynolds. I’ll be your super for the next month.”

Lyra took his hand and mentally swatted at the swoon happening in her head as his warm hand engulfed hers. She could practically hear her girlfriends giggling and telling her to enjoy the moment.

She shook the voices right out of her head and smiled. “What happened to Kyle?” Kyle was the young doctorate student who normally served, for better or worse, as the building’s super. Alyssa answered for him, so they must have already covered this territory. Leave it to Alyssa to challenge anyone new in the building. “He’s counting testicles.”

Lyra could feel the heat race to her face as her eyes shot to the man in front of her, but her new super took it in stride. He looked down at Alyssa, the edges of his lips twitching as a smile tried to break free. “Tentacles. He’s counting tentacles.” Now he turned to Lyra. “Kyle is going to be on board a marine biology vessel tracking a mutation in the number of legs in some kind of octopus for the next month. From what I’m told, it’s a dream internship for someone in his field.”

“Ah.” Lyra nodded.

Kyle was a nice enough kid, but he wasn’t the greatest super in the world. He tried, but his skill level at fixing things left something to be desired. She could put up with looking at this guy for the next month for sure, and who knew, maybe he’d turn out to be good at fixing things as a bonus.

Her friends’ voices were back in her head with all kinds of comments about fixing things, complete with Joey Tribbiani-style grins and nods.

“Anyway, you’re stuck with me.” Luke smiled again and damn if her panties didn’t start trying to wriggle right off. This had to end. Had to.
Ryan, Lori. All In (Sleeper SEALs Book 9) (Kindle Locations 209-252). Lori Ryan. Kindle Edition.

As Luke searches for the leader of the plot, the evidence becomes more damning.

Even as he falls for his suspect, he just knows it isn’t her. He just has to figure out who and how.

A page turner with lots of suspense, some heat and lots of excitement.

Winter Blog Review

There is one thing I can guarantee with a Susan Stoker book and that is once you start it you won’t be able to put it down.

This one opens in the jungle with Blade’s sister Casey in a deep, dark hole, holding on by keeping the faith that a team would find her. You can feel her strength, her fear and her faith.

Feel the jungle heat and humidity, see in your mind’s eye the creatures both large and small as Blade, Beatle and the rest of Ghost’s team fights the clock to find his sister.

Delays from the government, a foreign special ops team and general frustrations for the team before they are allowed to search.

One thing is certain, they wouldn’t be leaving the country without Casey.

Troy (Beatle) began falling in love with Casey when Blade showed him her picture. Now as the team heads out to locate her, the stories Blade shares has him feeling like he’s known her forever.

This is a favorite scene as he pulls her from the hole that has been her prison.

Taking a moment, even though Beatle wanted to get both of them up into the fresh air as soon as possible, he said softly, so only she could hear him, “Trust me, Case. I’m not leaving. I’m going to grab hold of you under your arms so it doesn’t hurt as much when we’re pulled up. I’ll do everything in my power to protect you from here on out. I’m going to make whoever did this to you pay.” The last bit came out a bit harsher than he’d intended, but Casey didn’t flinch away from the anger he knew was coming off him in waves.

“As long as you want me by your side, I’m there, Casey. In this hole. Out there in the jungle. Even back home. Whatever you need, I’ll make sure you have it. Understand?”

Her pupils were big in her eyes as they slowly adjusted to the dim light coming from the hole above their heads. She nodded.

“Here’s the deal,” he said in the same quiet tone. “I admire the fuck out of you. Anyone else would’ve died in this hole. By all rights, you shouldn’t be alive.” His eyes flicked to the bra she’d attached to the side of the wall, before meeting hers again. “But not you. You’re something special. No pressure, but you should know, I want to be in your life. Any way you’ll let me.”

She snorted at that. Beatle thought it was supposed to be a laugh, but she didn’t have the strength to do it properly. He grinned. “I know, I’m insane. But how about we get out of this fucking hole, get you some water, and you can tell me how crazy I am later. Yeah?”

“Water,” she croaked.

“Yeah, sweetheart. Water. Now, let go of my hands and let’s get out of here.”

“What the fuck are you waiting for?” Ghost called down impatiently.

Beatle couldn’t help it. His smile grew. He had nothing to smile about, but hearing Ghost’s pissed-off tone and seeing the answering humor in Casey’s eyes had him fucking ecstatic. He hadn’t lied to her. By all rights, she should be dead. But somehow, she’d survived. Held on. For him to find. She had one hell of an inner strength to still be alive.

Her hands loosened around his, and he didn’t hesitate. Reaching down, his fingers wrapped around her back while his thumbs rested on the edges of her pectoral muscles. He easily lifted her off her feet.

He felt her hands weakly grip his biceps, but she otherwise hung limply in his hold, trusting him not to drop her and to get her out.

“Now!” he exclaimed loudly.

As soon as the word left his lips, Beatle felt himself moving upward. He held Casey tightly, making sure her body didn’t brush against the edges of the hole as they moved.

She wasn’t light, but she definitely wasn’t heavy, either. In fact, from what he could estimate her height being, she should be much heavier. The urge to feed her, to help her back to a healthy body weight, almost overwhelmed him, but he had to deal with other things first.

As they neared the opening and the light got brighter, her eyes shut once more.

Truck and the others eased him over the edge and Beatle felt the plank of wood scrape against his belly. Before he even had to say anything, Ghost and Fletch were there, helping him take Casey’s weight and easing her out of the hole.

Beatle didn’t let go of her. He simply rolled with her until he was crouched above her on the ground. His hand moved of its own volition to her hair. He brushed the filthy strands out of her face, leaving his palm on the side of her head.

Her eyes squinted open once more and she gave him a small smile. “Hi,” she croaked.

“Hi,” he returned, but didn’t smile. She was breaking his heart. And for someone whose enemies would’ve said didn’t have a heart, that was something.
Susan Stoker. Rescuing Casey: Delta Force Heroes, Book 7 (Kindle Locations 522-553). Stoker Aces Production, LLC.

A trek through the jungle, forced by more government problems, allows Beatle and Casey to become better acquainted, even as he declares her to be his.

Fear, tension, relief, laughter and love are just some of the emotions that will take control of you as you read.

Friendship, love and karma at it’s best come into play as this tale unfolds.

The whole team is involved so we get to see everyone. I so love Annie and her antics. The strength of all these women including Casey is something to aspire to.

Secrets are revealed, a new love takes hold and an epilogue you don’t want to miss!

This has become my favorite in this series so far.

ARC Review of Protected By The Lawman – Lawmen of Wyoming Book 1 by Rhonda Lee Carver

Protected by The Lawman
Lawmen of Wyoming Book 1

Winter Blog Blurb

Phoenix is over his ex, but since he caught her cheating he’s compared relationships to playing with fire. It’s only a matter of time before a man gets burnt. Yet, Ria is different. However, he’s realizing, a man in love becomes a giant. He’ll protect Ria with a force unlike any that has ever been seen before.

Winter Blog Review

One of my favorite things about this book is the heroine. She’s smart, tough, feisty and blind. Ria lost a fiancé because of her blindness, but not her ambition. She left the big city with her sister, to start over in her old family home.

When she meet Phoenix Cade, she doesn’t know he’s the sheriff every woman wants. All she knows is she attracted to him and she hopes never to run into him again after she embarrasses herself.

None of that seems important after two goons kill her assistant and a client at her home office. Saving herself by hiding on the shelf under her massage table, it was pure luck she wasn’t discovered and killed.

One of the things the bad guys don’t take into consideration is the acute senses of a blind person. Everything is more enhanced to make up for the lack of sight, so while she is unable to visually identify them she can give some definite insight into them.

This is a favorite scene.

“Don’t discount yourself as a witness. What you heard, smelled, the killers’ voices are all a part of the puzzle. You’re a bigger help than you can ever imagine, but I’d never put you in more danger to solve this case.”

“I’m glad to help, but…” her shoulders slumped.

“Go on,” he urged.

“Who can I trust?”

“You can trust me. I’ll keep you safe. I promise.”

Goosebumps popped up on her arms. Over the years she’d gotten skilled at listening to a person’s voice to understand their emotions and he seemed sincere. From what Kora had told her he had a reputation of being a hard-ass that got the job done. More than ever she needed someone like him on her side.

“Now, how about let’s get off the street. Okay?”

“I’ll go with you to the cabin, but I want to make it clear that I don’t want to take you away from your investigation. I don’t need a sitter.”

“Think of me less as a sitter and more of a bodyguard.” His light chuckle made her smile.
Rhonda Lee Carver. Protected By The Lawman: Lawmen of Wyoming, Book 1 (Kindle Locations 522-553).

The heat ratchets up a notch as Phoenix takes her into protective custody. His family cabin becomes the scene of their budding romance.

As the layers are pealed off this mystery, betrayal and heartbreak ensue.

Very well written with edge of your seat suspense, extremely hot make-out scenes and so much more.

Winter Blog Review

I had one of those, how did I not read this moments, when I was gifted this book. It seems I have read all of this series except for the latest release and of all things this one. The FIRST book. So I have now corrected that faux pas.

When Sophia’s mother dies, she is left with just about nothing. The perfect job falls in her lap, a job that also provides her with a place to live. Then her brother runs away from his foster home.

Mason saves her from a horrific assault while she is looking for her brother. Whether she likes it or not, she now has his protection and help.

Mason can’t believe her determination and resistance to taking care of herself in spite of her injuries.

This is a favorite scene when Mason introduces her to Drake.

When they got to the diner it was the middle of lunch hour, but there was a table with a reserved sign on it. Apparently it was not the norm by the grumbling of the patrons in line waiting to be seated. Sophia was taking orders so she missed them when they came in, but when she turned around she smiled.

“She’s beautiful, Mase.” She was. She also shouldn’t be working. Even from there, Mason could see the lines of pain around her mouth. He looked around for Margie and caught her eye. Margie bustled over to him.

“I’m so glad you’re here. She came down about an hour ago and put the reserved sign on the table for y’all. I couldn’t stop her from working until you showed up. Even though Brenda and I have things mostly covered. Now that you’re here, please sit down for lunch.” Margie patted Mason’s arm.

“Hello,” Sophia stopped in front of him. She smiled at Drake.

“Sophia, this is my friend Drake Avery who I was telling you about. Drake, this is Sophia Anderson.

Sophia, come sit down and eat with us.” Mason smiled at Sophia, taking in the bruising on her face.

“After you explain why you’re working. Are you out of your mind, girl?” Drake demanded. Oh, this was not going to go well. Of course it was exactly what he was thinking, but he would have said it with a little more tact.

“This way to your seat.” She turned and ushered them to the table with the reserved sign. Mason held out a chair for her but she ignored it and walked towards the back of the diner. Yep, tact would have worked better.

“What the hell?” Drake said loudly.

“Shut it,” Mason hissed. He followed Sophia towards the kitchen. He thought she might be going back there to work, and then saw a small door to the right that had to be to the upstairs apartment. She fumbled with the doorknob with her left hand and he took the opportunity to put a gentle hand on her uninjured shoulder.

“Honey, can we talk?” He tried to catch her eye, but she kept looking at the doorknob.

“I’m going to wait upstairs until you’re done with lunch.” Dammit, she probably hadn’t even eaten lunch. He was going to kill Drake.

“I missed you, and I sure would like it if you’d have lunch with me.”  She paused and turned to him, her green eyes unsure.

“You did? Me?”

“Yes, you. I would really like to spend more time with you. If you don’t eat with me, I’m stuck eating with just Drake. Would you really force me to endure that?” Her eyes twinkled at his teasing.

“He can be a little overbearing, can’t he?” Seeing her smile hit him in the gut. He’d love it if she’d do it more often.

“He’s a SEAL—it’s in the job description.”

“Holy crap. Are you one too?” Her eyes widened.

“If I answer this wrong, will you still have lunch with me?”  She hesitated.  Damn, most women were all over him when he said SEAL.  “Sophia?”

“I don’t want to take up too much of your time.  You must be busy and I can look for Billy by myself.”  Yep, being a SEAL was counting against him.

“Let’s go have lunch and put Drake in his place. Then we can talk about my schedule and how best to find Billy, okay?” He waited and she finally nodded. Okay, he’d managed to get past another hurdle and he breathed a sigh of relief.
O’Leary, Caitlyn. Her Vigilant SEAL (Midnight Delta Book 1) (pp. 55-58). Caitlyn O’Leary. Kindle Edition.

Sophie has more issues than just her brother running away. Her self-esteem is almost non-existent, her confidence is only in herself and she trusts only a few people.

Mason has his work cut out for him and believe me it’s rough going. He has to get her to trust not only him but his team as well.

Persistence is the name of the game. There is plenty of suspense to keep you turning the pages as this relationship develops.

I now have to re-read the rest of this series. I just know I’ve missed some important stuff.

My Review of Coming Home – Baytown Boys Book 1 by Maryann Jordan

Coming Home
Baytown Boys Book 1
Maryann Jordan

1cf2a-addtogoodreadsWinter Blog Blurb

Military duty called them away to war zones, but after tours overseas, the group of friends found their way back home as men, seeking the peaceful little seaside town. Now, the band of brothers, together once more, work to provide a place for less fortunate veterans to call home.

Mitch Evans left his career as an FBI agent after his father retired as the Baytown Police Chief. Returning home to take up the mantle, he was glad to be back with his family and the Baytown boys. The bonus? Reuniting with his childhood friend and teenage crush.

Victoria Bradford came back to Baytown to run the Sea Glass Inn after her grandmother’s death. A simpler life was what she yearned for. When the new Police Chief showed up on her doorstep, her heart skipped a beat as old memories came rushing back.

When one of Tori’s guests died from poisoning, Mitch was determined to stay objective while solving the murder. Then the evidence pointed to Tori as being the intended victim and another attempt was made on her life.

Mitch, desperate to find the killer before he strikes at Tori again, calls upon the Baytown Boys to assist, as he vows to protect her.

Winter Blog Review

When I reviewed the latest in this series I said I was going back to read the rest to meet other characters in more depth. I meant it and I am so very glad I did.

The Baytown Boys are back in town, each doing something to benefit the town. In this first book we center on Mitch although we do meet all the others.

Mitch has his hands full with his new position of Chief of Police. There’s much he wants to upgrade, things he wants to change, not too quickly but a process.

The best part of coming home for him is Tori. He fell hard for her when he was only eight and those feelings have only grown over the years. He never really expected to find her in town though.

Tori only spent summers in Baytown, but she loved being there with her grandmother. With the passing of her grandmother she is now owner of the Sea Glass Inn. Being here has all the memories of her and Mitch and those summers coming invading her mind.

One of my favorite scenes after Tori and Mitch go on their first date as adults.

Sipping the wine, they relaxed, letting the years drift away, finding once more that time was easy between them.

“So you never married?” she asked, curiosity overriding common sense.

“Nope. Never found the right woman to spend my life with. When I get married, it’ll be for life… like my parents.”

As soon as the words were out of his mouth and he saw the hurt flash across her face, he wanted to pull them back in while simultaneously kicking himself in the ass.

“Jesus, Tori. I’m sorry.”

The silence was no longer easy, but strained. Finally, he said, “Can you tell me about your marriage?” He paused, and then added, “Only if you want to.”

She grimaced but forged ahead. “There’s not much to tell. I married a man I met through work. I think we were actually more friends than a great love and I was too naïve to understand the difference.”

“So what happened? Did you just grow apart?”

Her gaze drifted over his shoulder, as she admitted, “No… like you, I planned on being married for life. But, well, he… um… well, he cheated and I found out.”

“No fuckin’ way!” Mitch cursed, hating the insecurity he heard resounding in her voice.

Sitting up straighter, she met his angry stare. “Yep. I found out and hired someone to follow him to make sure. When I had all the evidence I needed, I confronted him. Told him I was leaving and I wanted a divorce. He didn’t want one. Swore it was all a mistake and he’d never stray again.”

She suddenly turned sideways, facing Mitch on the glider, bringing her face close to his. Taking a deep breath, she said, “As hurt as I was, I wasn’t tempted one little bit to take him back. You want to know what I discovered? Grandma always said I deserved someone special and Mitch, right there, at that moment, I knew he wasn’t special!”

Mesmerized by the strength in her words, he pulled her in for a kiss. Unlike the one at the restaurant, this kiss went from soft to a hard, wet kiss almost instantly. Delving his tongue inside her warm mouth, he tasted the wine and essence of her… drinking her in.

She relaxed into his embrace as he moved her closer. Reaching up, she cupped his face, finally allowing her fingertips to move over his close-shaven beard. His lips were strong and supple, moving over her mouth while his tongue tangled with hers.

Just when she slipped into a dreamlike state of kissing bliss, he moved away slightly. Her lips tried to maintain contact, but she opened her eyes to find him staring deeply into hers.

“You are special, Tori. I knew that the minute I saw you when I was eight and you were only six years old. And all these years later… I still know that. And your grandma was right.”
Maryann Jordan. Coming Home: The Baytown Boys Series (Kindle Locations 1038-1061).

It’s a fun read as we get to know Mitch and Tori’s past and watch them once again become a couple.

Now there are a couple of folks I’m not fond of and that’s the Mayor and the City Manager, oh and the Mayor’s secretary too. Can’t wait to see how they develop in future books.

With a threat to Tori but no obvious motive, things escalate quickly.

Fast paced with plenty of suspects, lots of friends and Tori and Mitch burn up the pages just about every time they’re together.

One of the things I like most about shifter books is seeing how each author interprets shifters and the rules of the world.

In this one we have a world where shifters are ‘out’ but those with other abilities are hunted and tested on. Regardless of whether they are human or shifter.

Keeley and Danielle have abilities and have mostly managed to stay off the Paranormal Bounty Hunter’s radar. That is until Simon caught up with them. He has abused and tortured them all in the name of learning how it all works. They run and he keeps finding them each time getting away is harder.

Kal is sheriff and the Alpha of the Raferty pack in Window Rock. He protects his pack and his town. So when Keeley and Danielle show up unannounced he is more than a little suspicious, and quite surprised when he feels the mate pull.

Quite a bit of violence in this one as well as those looking to prevent it. Caden brings a severely injured pup to Danielle and that’s when she reveals her healing abilities. She also learns they are shifters.

Kal and Keeley are mates but even though she can’t seem to stay away from him she has an overpowering need to protect her sister with no regard for herself.

Chilling revelations and so much more as we meet this. The relationships between Kal and Keeley and Caden and Danielle certainly have plenty of ups and downs. There are so many characters I fell in love with and I can’t wait to read more of them.

I laughed, cried and scratched my head a few times at the stubbornness. All in all a fast paced, sexy, suspenseful and down right spellbinding read!

A favorite scene is in the excerpt below, don’t forget to read it.

5 Contented Purrs for TL and Michelle!

“Where the fuck is the baby?” He kept his voice controlled, knowing the pup was safe and sound with Danielle—for now. Kal tried in vain to keep his voice down so their neighbors couldn’t overhear their conversation. As it stood, he still wasn’t sure how he felt about Keeley. Well, he did, but acknowledging the mating and participating in it were two totally different things. Right now, they didn’t need any extra headaches. However, he had a sneaky suspicion he was in over his head and he was too stupid, or ignorant, to admit it.

“He’s with Danielle.” Caden shrugged, moving around his brother. “The boy was in his pup form when I got him. I couldn’t take him to a hospital and you know if I took him to a vet—which there isn’t one in a twenty-mile radius—they would have freaked out if he spontaneously shifted. So, I brought him back here.”

“You don’t think the girl will freak the fuck out when he spontaneously shifts, Caden?” Kal couldn’t believe what his brother said.

“No,” he answered plainly.

“No?” Kalkin snorted. “I have got to hear this explanation. Come on, lay it on me. Tell me, ‘oh smart one,’ why she won’t freak the fuck out when the baby shifts.”

“She’s not normal either.” A slow small crossed his brother’s lips. “She got this…thing. I promised I wouldn’t tell anyone about it, but bro. She’s special.”

“Great. Fan-fucking-tastic. So, she could have a serious case of gas, but she’s special.” Wow, he knew his brother could be stupid sometimes, but this was a colossal fuck up. It ranked right up there with the time they were sixteen and Caden decided he was going to pull the tail of a cat shifter. The asshole ended up in bed for a week with tiger claw slashes to his side.

“I’m being serious, asshole,” Caden snapped, going nose to nose with his brother. “She helped the pup more in five minutes than a hospital could in two fucking weeks. I promised her I wouldn’t say what it was, but I felt her. She did something to him and he was a different pup when he woke up.”

Kalkin blinked, taking in everything his brother said. A part of him wanted to believe his brother and another part of him wanted to continue to chew his ass. He also realized he should be more concerned with the pup. Kal blew out a breath and scrubbed his hand across his brow. “How bad?”

“Two broken legs and some bites. Danielle thinks he’ll be fine. She wrapped the wounds and set his back legs.” He chuckled a bit. “Aiden ate up the attention when I checked on them after Mrs. Martin hooked me up with some breast milk for the boy.” Caden turned serious for a moment. “I don’t know why Tiffany had fucking pups. She couldn’t even take care of herself when we were younger. Then she goes off and gets fucking pregnant. The bitch tried to kill him!” Kalkin watched his brother pace. “Aiden is now parentless. Why? Because she doesn’t have enough fucking sense to bring all the pups to her Alpha.”

Wait. “There are more?” He couldn’t believe Caden would take one and leave the others. “Why did you leave them?”

“Aiden is the only one who survived.”

“Fuck.” He’d have to deal with this sooner rather than later. “Do we know the father?”

Caden snorted. “If I had to guess? Someone in the Quincy pack. The kid smelled of piss and shit, though, so I couldn’t be sure.”

“Shit. Not what we need right now, but because you went off half-cocked, you brought shit down on our new neighbors.” Kalkin couldn’t even be angry anymore. He understood Caden’s need to protect the baby. However, it couldn’t be at the expense of two women who’d been through their own shit. “What are you going to do when Aiden shifts and is a baby?”

“Well, I had been thinking about it when you pulled up to house like Billy Bad Ass. I’m going to tell her what we are.”

What? “Are you fucking kidding me?” He couldn’t believe what his brother was saying. “Why?”

“Tell me you aren’t planning to do the same.” Caden’s blue eyes swirled with intent. “Tell me you weren’t going to have Keeley run with you during the full moon.” His brother had him. He had been contemplating revealing himself during the first day of the summer festival.
“Shit,” he said, blowing out a frustrated breath. “This is all FUBAR.” Fucked up beyond all recognition.

“Tell me about it.”

“You’re part of the reason, asshole.” He turned away from his brother and caught his neighbor staring at him. “Great.”

“What?” His brother stepped over to where he was standing. “Ah, shit.” There, peeking out of their window, stood Keeley, Danielle, and a very happy little boy. Shit, maybe his brother had been right.

“Yeah, great fucking work, asshole. I’m betting they saw and heard everything. So much for having to explain it to them.”

“Hold on. You’re assuming they heard anything. They’re completely human. They couldn’t hear a flea fart.”

“I thought you said Danielle is special.” Kal cocked a brow. “Or were you blowing smoke up my ass about her?”

“She is. I can assure you what I experienced when she started working with Aiden,” Caden paused. “Shit, bro. It was amazing.”

“Are you sure she was touching the pup?” he quipped.

“Yes, dickhead. It wasn’t sexual at all, but it had been amazing nonetheless.” Caden’s blue gaze locked with Kal’s and his demeanor turned serious. “She’s my mate.”

Of all the fucking things he expected his brother to say, finding his mate hadn’t been one of them. “Shit. Are you sure?”

“Oh yeah.”
