Former Navy SEAL Cash Aiken assumed he could leave behind the trauma of war and settle into life as a bodyguard. Why not? He was big, smart, and nothing ever got past his eagle eye. But a split second of inattention nearly cost the life of his asset, and cost him his job. When his old buddy Travis Kincaid invites him to come work at Resolution Ranch, an organization helping wounded vets, he clings to the lifeline and hopes it’s a chance to start over. But Cash is stunned to discover that the beautiful woman he nearly let die is hiding out at the ranch, masquerading as a stable hand.
Country Music’s Superdiva Kaycee Starr is done with the music biz. After a terrifying encounter with a crazed fan, she goes underground and answers a help-wanted ad in a place the paparazzi would never think to look. Prairie, Kansas. While she finds solace and healing among the horses, handsome ranch hand Cash Aiken lights her up in ways she only wrote about in songs. He’s the only person she’s met who seems to ‘get’ her.
Cash and Kaycee fall hard and fast for each other, but when their secrets are exposed, will they have the courage to trust each other? And more importantly, themselves?
Kate needed to get away after firing her agent, she wants to do something besides sit around resting her voice. Her best friend Cheyenne suggests Prairie, she works the Walnut Valley Festival there every year and really loves the people.
Cash knows who their new hand ‘Kate’ is right from the start. He wonders why Kaycee Starr is there and using an alias. But he also finds himself seeking her out. They first enjoy ice cream and playing cards, when she can’t talk.
This is a favorite scene, after Cash makes them a wonderful steak dinner and Kate can use her voice a bit.
Cash raised his head, puffing his cheeks as he blew out a breath. “I was married at the time. It didn’t work out. I got a Dear Johnny letter not long after the ambush.”
Kate reeled. He’d been married? And dumped while he was on a mission? What kind of a person would do that? Especially to someone someone like Cash? A million new questions popped into her head. “Do you miss her?” she whispered, bracing for the answer. Oh God, what if he did? What would she do then? The realization she’d developed feelings for this gentle giant pummeled her.
“Nope,” he said flatly.
She exhaled the breath she’d been holding. “Did you love her?”
“Not like…” He shook his head. “I was devastated at the time, but we were young. Too young. Miranda liked the idea of being married to a SEAL far more than the reality. We made it just over a year, and half that time I was gone. I visited Hamm’s family as soon as I got the chance. Seeing the grief on their faces every time they looked at Hamm’s son made me glad I’d made different choices.”
Miranda. A wave of jealousy roiled through Kate, fierce and hot, leaving a bitter taste in her mouth.
“What about you? Has your heart been broken?”
How to explain without giving away one of her biggest secrets? But the second she disclosed her identity, this fragile thing blossoming between them would evaporate. As soon as Kaycee Starr came between them, he’d stop seeing her, Kate. Her indecision must have shown on her face, because he reached out and tipped her chin, forcing her to look right at him.
“Is that why you were crying last night? Did someone break your heart?” She was heartbroken, but not for the reason he thought. “I… it’s complicated.” His face fell. Shit. To keep one secret, she’d have to disclose the other, embarrassing embarrassing as it was. She took a deep breath. “I’ve never had a boyfriend. I… tonight… I guess you could call this my first date.” She twisted out of his grip, shutting her eyes, unable to bear looking at him a second longer. Her cheeks flamed. Her skin crawled from the shame of it. She stood. “I should go.” She looked around the room, anywhere but at him. “Thank you for a nice evening.”
He stood too, catching her shoulder and turning her back. “Wait. Please don’t go? I don’t want you to go.”
She pressed her cold hands to her cheeks. They were still on fire.
He took her hands, encasing them with his enormous ones. “You have nothing to be embarrassed about, Kate.”
“I have plenty.” She shook her head, dropping dropping her gaze. “I’m pathetic.”
“Look at me, Kate,” he commanded gently.
Reluctantly, she forced her eyes up, unable to breathe.
“Just so I’m clear, you’ve never…”
Another wave of shame rippled through her as she shook her head. This was not how she’d ever imagined their conversation going. How could she ever look at him again after tonight? But he lowered his head, so his mouth was a whisper from hers. If she shifted her weight to her toes, they’d be touching. His breath was warm and soft on her cheek, and she breathed him in. His masculine scent underneath the soapy clean went straight to her head like moonshine. Her nerve endings fired in anticipation, sending violent ripples all the way to her toes.
Layne, Tessa. A Hero’s Haven: Resolution Ranch (Flint Hills Military Heroes Book 3) (Kindle Locations 1227-1253). Shady Layne Media. Kindle Edition.
Thus starts a very sensual, beautiful, loving relationship.
Now Travis has some problems stemming from having this information withheld from him especially after Kate’s identity is leaked in a video hacked from Emma’s stolen phone.
However, no one has more problems when this information leaks than Kate aka Kaycee Starr. With everything out in the open, she has decisions to make. Decisions about her future without the concerts, her mother’s harping and without her manipulative agent but maybe with a certain cowboy named Cash.
Family drama in the form of her overbearing mother, love and support from her best friend Cheyenne and best of all lots of love and affection from Cash!
I laughed, I cried and couldn’t put this book down. I really love the way these books intertwine with the Cowboy’s of the Flint Hills series.
I hope Cheyenne has a book in the future, she should be close to her best friend.
