Tuff Enough
Blackhawk Security Book 1

Samantha A. Cole

While security operative Jason “Tuff” Tanner lives for dangerous assignments, he likes his downtime in his quiet neighborhood too. But that peacefulness is suddenly interrupted when his new next-door neighbor becomes a target for someone hell bent on revenge. Canine rescuer Concetta “Chet” Suarez brings all his protective instincts to the surface, along with feelings he’s never experienced with any other woman. Will he lose her before he ever gets a chance to make her his?

Two things I absolutely love in books are former military and animals. Dogs, cats, horses doesn’t matter, I pretty much love all animals domesticated and wild.

Concetta ‘Chet’ Suarez is an animal control officer who is currently fostering a pit bull ‘Meat’ that was part of a rescue from a dog fighting ring. His trust is limited to just Chet at the moment.

Jason ‘Tuff’ Tanner, is returning from a mission. The last thing he expected as he approached his door, was his very attractive neighbor to open her door and a massive dog come out snarling.

This is a favorite scene as Chet gets the dog under control.

Petting the pit’s massive head, Chet murmured a few times before turning to look at Tuff, apologetically. “I’m so sorry about that. I didn’t know you were out here. Meat’s had a tough life so far, and he’s very wary of men.”

Tuff relaxed a little and snorted. “If that’s wary, I’d hate to see when he gets hostile.”

Still stroking the dog, Chet frowned. “That’s what happens to pit bulls when they’re raised from puppies to be fight dogs.”

“Fight dog? Is he from the raid I heard about last week?” He remembered her telling him she was an animal control officer for Hillsborough County, which included the city of Tampa, and volunteered with rescue groups.

“Yeah. He and fourteen others. They were found caged in a warehouse in deplorable conditions. Two had been so badly injured they had to be euthanized.” She clearly wasn’t happy about that, and Tuff didn’t blame her.

Studying the dog, now that Meat wasn’t trying to kill him, Tuff could see the multiple scars that covered his face and body. His velvet-covered ears had been cropped, and there was a cleft on the side of his upper lip from a tear that’d healed without stitches. Despite the damage, he was a beautiful dog, and Tuff wished he could spend five minutes alone with the bastards who’d used Meat and the other dogs for sport. No animal should be abused in any way, shape, or form.

“Sorry to hear that. So, he’s staying with you?” Renters were allowed pets as long as there weren’t any complaints from the neighbors about them.

“I’m fostering him for now. We bonded at the shelter. Once he was out of quarantine, I decided to bring him home to show him what it was like to be pampered. He’d never seen the inside of a house or had his own soft bed before. I’m hoping to retrain him so he can find a forever home.”

Tuff’s gaze dropped to Meat, who’d finally laid down on the concrete, still panting, then returned to Chet’s face. “That’ll probably take a while.”

Her chin lifted. “I think he’s worth it.”

“I didn’t think he wasn’t.” He scratched his temple. Tuff loved all animals, but dogs especially. He’d had a few while growing up, and there had been some in his Army unit. When they weren’t working, he and his buddies had enjoyed playing fetch with the MWDs, or just sitting there, petting them. “Can I help?”

Chet’s head tilted to the side. “How?”

“You can use me to get him to understand not all men want to harm him. Think if I lay down on the grass, you can let him sniff me? I’ll stay perfectly still. Then you can reward him when he doesn’t sink his teeth into me.”

“Um . .  . yeah, if you don’t mind. I’ll walk him around you, but not too close.”

“Great.” Tuff headed for the middle of the lawn in front of Chet’s side of the house, wondering if he just signed himself up to be the dog’s next meal.
Love Under Siege. Samantha A. Cole. Tuff Enough. Kindle Locations 92-115. Kindle Edition.

These two have an immediate attraction, but neither of them really want to get involved since they’re neighbors. Meat is a definite player in this one as he brings these two together.

All is not fun and games as Chet’s boss and his wife are killed in a drive-by and dogs from the raid are taken from the homes fostering them.

Things heat up in more ways than one, as they realize Chet is a possible target of these gang members.

I loved meeting Tuff’s team and some of the guys from Trident. Looks like I have another series to read.

Plenty of action, suspense and heat and I can’t wait for the next book in this series, it’s nice to start a series at the beginning.

Never Forget
Never Forget Series Book 1

Kalyn Cooper

Dreams or nightmares. Truth or lies. He can’t tell them apart after he sees the woman in his dreams. She is the key to his past, present, and future… She just buried her husband next to her fiancé who was killed in an explosion while they were on a mission together ten years ago. She doesn’t need another man in her life, until someone tries to kill her.

Once again Kalyn has me biting my nails. Now I know the CIA does scary stuff, but man this is really terrifying.

Elizabeth lost her husband of less than a day ten years ago in an explosion overseas. Now she is burying her second one, a victim of an auto accident.

Matthew is Gabe’s second in command, he’s been having dreams of a silvery-eyed woman and a lot of circumstances that seem real but couldn’t be, could they?

He meets the woman haunting his dreams at her husband funeral. More than that he seems to recognize her former teammates, but still not really.

Her vision was blurred by tears when she looked at Gabriel. “I can’t thank—” She couldn’t finish the sentence. The man who arrived with Gabe now stood three feet behind him in the same spot her son had occupied for the past half hour. He’d taken off his aviator sunglasses and was wiping them with a lens cloth.

He looked up and met her gaze.

Elizabeth couldn’t breathe. Her lungs refused to work.

She blinked, and blinked, trying to sweep away the water so she could focus. She removed her sunglasses and dabbed her eyes, then looked straight into his.

His whole body jolted as though they had been connected by a live wire.

No. It couldn’t be.

Her gaze tracked to the gravestone. Mason A. Sinclair. She stared at the final date as if she needed confirmation of his death.

Slowly, she dared to look at the white-haired man with the face of an angel.

The edges of her vision narrowed until all she saw was his light brown eyes and the golden circle around the iris.

The world went black.

In her mind, she was falling into her own grave, meeting Mason in the next world, as every muscle in her body gave up.
Love Under Siege. KaLyn Cooper. Never Forget. (Kindle Locations 637-647). Kindle Edition.

As Matt insinuates himself into her life, he learns more things that worry him. Protecting her and her children is foremost on this list.

I hope this is the beginning of another series or at least becomes part of the existing ones. I loved the mention of the Black Swans and Uncle Tom Callahan.

This is an intense, romantic, scary, and emotional book. I loved every minute of it.

Ravished River
Men of Mercy

Lindsay Cross

Special Forces Operative Aaron Spears dealt with relationships like he dealt with battle – something to be avoided if at all possible, until Celine Latimer walked into his life and turned his world upside down.

Aaron recommended Celine as the stylist for Caroline Cotter’s wedding, the Senator’s daughter was marrying General Rainer in a typical DC affair. A wedding that never took place as Caroline and Celine were kidnapped.

Filled with guilt Aaron can’t get Celine out of his mind something that hasn’t happened to him before. The man behind it all is a traitor, former CIA known as Mr. J. The goal now is to find the women and kill Mr. J.

They manage to intercept a transaction, but only Celine was in the vehicles.

This is a favorite scene when Celine wakes in the hospital.

Celine was literally falling apart right before his eyes and he didn’t have a damn clue what to do to stop it. She’d gone completely white when she looked under the sheet. Was he supposed to hold her? Or would having a man touch her make her worse? Did he need to call the Sister back in here?

She shuddered and silent tears flowed from her closed eyes. Fuck, his chest felt like someone had stuck a blade in it and left it there to rust. He’d never felt so helpless. What was going through her mind? If only he could ask her without invoking more nightmares.

She moaned and bent forward, the first sob breaking free and suddenly he knew what he had to do. His arms went around her, as natural as if they’d been molded for her, and he held her against his chest. Bleeding and sobbing with only a stained sheet between them, he held her.

He’d never let her go.

Her knees gave out, Aaron scooped her fluidly, sensing when she no longer had the strength to stand on her own. He didn’t care about anything or anyone else right now except the woman in his arms.

He knew girls needed to cry sometimes, he’d learned that lesson from his sisters. Sometimes they cried for no reason whatsoever than a need to cleanse. Celine cried for a reason more real than she could handle on her own.
Her sobs filled the room, each one ripping a little piece from his heart.

He’d handle whatever she’d been through and he’d be here for her; hold her up so she wouldn’t fall to her demons.

He had no clue about recovering from rape or captivity, but he’d do his damn best to do what he could for her and right now he did what felt right. He held her.

Sister Mary Catherine eased open the door, saw them together and slowly closed it.

Celine clutched his shirt, holding on to him like a life line. He embraced the fierce surge of protectiveness and eased onto the bed, settling her in his lap. Eventually, her sobs turned to soft sniffles and then to even softer pants as she strove for control.

He remained silent, letting her figure her own way through. When she was ready, he’d be here.
Love Under Siege. Lindsay Cross. Ravished River. Men of Mercy Book 8. Kindle Locations 3915-3930. Kindle Edition.

With Celine rescued and brought back to the US they find Mr. J’s reach is deeper than they originally thought, and Aaron has to go off the grid with Celine.

Lots of suspense as Aaron comes to terms with his feelings for Celine and the fact his team has yet to locate Caroline.

Fast paced, sexy and sizzling.

I can’t wait to read the Men of Mercy Series.

The Bounty Hunters

PJ Fiala

Lincoln Winter is hired to bring in a criminal who is selling arms on the black market and he never misses a mark. That is until the sultry Skye Sommers crosses his path and unwittingly gets herself caught up in much more than she can handle. Can they stay alive long enough to find a killer, an arms dealer and love?

When bounty hunter Lincoln Winter enlists the aid of HR person Skye Sommers to apprehend a runner, he doesn’t expect the attraction. He also doesn’t expect to open the can of worms he does. He does however look forward to getting to know the beautiful Skye better.

As Skye is reprimanded for turning the employee over to the police, she realizes something is off with her boss. After checking for other employees she hasn’t hired at this location, she is surprised to find others and decides to do some more checking from home.

Lincoln finds her stuck on the road, her car overheating and finagles a dinner invitation when he offers help with her other chores.

This is a favorite scene when he meets her parents.

She smiled at him, and the smile he returned took her breath away. She’d never seen such beauty in a man. While impressively large and strong, his features were mesmerizing. She’d never seen such beautiful gray eyes, and those dark lashes framing them were envious.

“Hi, sweetheart, I made spaghetti tonight. It’s just about ready to …” Her mother turned with a bowl of steaming hot pasta in her hands and froze when her eyes landed on Lincoln.

“Well, hello,” her mother said, if not a bit breathless, then certainly with some awe in her voice.

Lincoln chuckled behind her, no doubt used to this reaction from women. She stepped aside and held her hand toward her mother. “Mom, this is Lincoln Winter. Lincoln, my mom, Melissa.”

She watched as the bowl of pasta was deposited on the table and her mom swiped her hands on the towel tucked into her jeans as an apron. She met Lincoln in the middle of the room and they shook hands.

“It’s nice to meet you, Melissa.”

Did her mother just sigh? Shit. She did. She didn’t want her mom—or dad, for that matter—getting attached to Lincoln. This was nothing more than showing him what a mess her life was so he’d go on his merry way. Victor and Mangus didn’t want her helping him, and she didn’t need the complication. She needed the job right now and couldn’t risk losing it over a man. Not again.

“Oh … it’s nice meeting you, Lincoln.” Yep, she was sighing.

“Momma, where’s Daddy?” She needed to get this show moving.

Her mother’s lips thinned and her posture straightened. “He’s had a very bad day today, and he’s in his chair in the living room. I tried helping him up, but I couldn’t do it myself. I was waiting for you to help me.”

Nodding, she stepped toward the living room, Lincoln and her mother on her heels. “Hi, Daddy.”

Her father sat in his burgundy recliner, purchased just after his accident with the lumbar supports he needed during his healing time. Little did any of them know how well it would be used just one year later. He looked up at her, his formerly tall, straight shoulders now slouched from pain and sadness. He hated being so helpless. It gnawed at her gut to see him so defeated.

“Hi, sweetheart. Hope you had a good day today.” His voice, which had once been so strong and deep, now sounded hollow and detached.

“It was good, Daddy. I’d like to introduce you to Lincoln Winter.” She turned to Lincoln. “My dad, Jeff.”

Lincoln leaned forward with his hand out and took Jeff’s hand in his. They shook hands, and she watched her father’s face light up just a bit as they engaged in some silent man speak. “I understand today was a bad day and you need some help. Allow me to be of assistance.”

Lincoln took charge and leaned down in front of her father, wrapped his arms around her father’s hips and slowly pulled him to the front edge of the recliner. Once he had him in place, he said to her dad, “Fast or slow?”

She shot a quick glance at her mother whose brows now furrowed as she watched Lincoln make quick work of a task they would have taken fifteen minutes to complete.

Bending his knees before her father, she watched as her dad’s arms wrapped around Lincoln’s shoulders and in just a few seconds, Lincoln stood with her father in front of him. Giving her father a moment to get his bearings, he waited until he nodded and removed his arms.

Her father’s hands gripped the walker her mother set in front of him, and she saw him smile just a bit.

“If you ladies want to head on in to the kitchen, I’ll make sure Jeff gets in okay.”

They both hesitated until Lincoln nodded at her, then he winked again. Didn’t that just wing through her body and straight to places that should be left out of this whole scenario?

She nodded to her mother who walked ahead of her to the kitchen. Behind her, she heard her father saying, “I love them, but they hover too much.”

“That’s what women do,” Lincoln responded. She fought the urge to turn and look at him. Then she heard, “But they’re gorgeous, and that’s a plus.”

Her father chuckled and she ducked around the corner of the kitchen, her cheeks flaming red and her breathing a bit choppy. Lincoln thought she was gorgeous.
Love Under Siege. PJ Fiala. Lincoln. Kindle Locations 5323-5357. Kindle Edition.

Things heat up quickly in more ways than one as more suspicions fall on the Santorino brothers, Skye’s employers.

Fast paced, suspenseful with plenty of action keep you on your toes as Skye and Lincoln’s relationship starts to sizzle.

I’m not sure who I love more Lincoln or his gorgeous German Shepherd Abe. The other men in his company have me wanting to know them better and I was happy to see Ford has his own book. I’ll definitely be watching for more of this Series.

Lighthouse Security Investigation

Maryann Jordan

Mace Hanna’s security business keeps him busy…too busy for a relationship. When providing security for a single mom and her young son who has witnessed a murder, he vows to keep them safe…and finds love along the way.

Once again a ‘can’t put it down’ book from Maryann. I was enthralled from the very first page. Mace’s grandfather, the house, the lighthouse, the history, I felt like I was there.

Then his company Lighthouse Security Investigations, I loved the way he found this latest case. It was intriguing the way he put the pieces together and found Sylvie and her son.

This is a favorite scene as he meets with Sylvie after her son David witnessed the murder.

Sylvie watched her son before turning around, observing as Mason settled into the chair.

“I’m going to be completely honest with you, Ms. Gardner,” he said. “I am a private investigator, but I also do a lot of individual security work. I monitor police reports at times, to see if I can be of service. The police report that was filed last Thursday caught my eye.”

Cocking her head to the side, she asked, “Did you recognize me from our little…um…encounter that morning?”

“No, no…not at first. Then, I saw your driver’s license and realized who you were.”

She nodded, uncertain what to say, but curiosity filling her.

“I felt a desire to look into the reports that you had filed with the police here.”

“What is it that you’re looking for?”

“After seeing the third report that you filed, where you reported someone had been in your house, I wanted to offer you any security advice that I can.” Doubts still lingered in her eyes, so Mason continued, “For example, I see that you have no deadbolt on your front door and I assume the back door is the same. I also notice that you do not have any outdoor security lights. And, while Mr. Curtis is certainly the kind of neighbor who would call the police if he thought something was happening, I would hate for you to only have him to rely on.”

“Mr. Hanover, everything you say is right, but I’ve talked to the police. I don’t know what else I can do,” she said, dropping her eyes, wiping her palms on her jeans. “I bought a deadbolt lock, but after I got home, I realized I need a special drill bit to make a large hole in the door to install it.” Her voice lower, she admitted, “I can’t afford any fancy security.”

“Ms. Gardner, do you believe that your son witnessed a crime?”

Her head jerked up, her clear eyes meeting his, and she declared, “Absolutely. He may be young, but he doesn’t lie. And while he certainly has a child’s normal imagination, the level of detail was too descriptive for him to be incorrect in what he saw.” She glanced over her shoulder, presumably listening for the sound of the television, before she looked toward him again. “I’m the one that had to hold him that night because he was shaking in fright.”

“I believe him,” he said, noting her jerk in surprise at his words. “I know the police were doubtful, but I believe your son’s story. What concerns me, is that you had somebody checking out this house, following you, and then you reported that someone had been inside. That indicates to me that what your son saw was absolutely real.”

Sylvie’s breath left her lungs in a rush, and she whispered, “Thank you.” Closing her eyes, for just a moment, she reveled in how good it felt to have someone believe them. Focusing on him again, she said, “But, I don’t know what to do about any of this.”

“When I was checking the police reports, I didn’t see a witness drawing. Did they ask him for specific details?”

Nodding, she said, “Yes. David gave a description of what the men looked like and were wearing, but…” As her voice trailed off, it struck her that the police had not asked for more details.

“I’d like to talk to David if you don’t mind,” Mason said, carefully watching the concern and doubt etched into the lines of her forehead. The idea that he would like to erase those lines by smoothing his fingers over her skin struck him, but he battled the idea back as soon as it hit. He expected her immediate refusal, but to his surprise, she nodded.

“I could—”

“Please, come in,” she said, standing quickly. Pushing her chair back, she reached forward and flipped the simple latch on the screen door. Seeing his surprise, she said, “I trust you. I want you to talk to David…as long as you don’t scare him more than he’s already been scared.”
Love Under Siege. Maryann Jordan. Mace. Kindle Locations 7954-7984. Kindle Edition.

When they discover the body and who exactly was killed more security is needed. Mace sets them up in his grandfather’s house, that is now his.

Things heat up very quickly in the case and Mace finds his attraction to Sylvie something he can’t ignore.

I absolutely loved the slow build of this relationship which includes David.

Plenty of twists and turns, romance and some fun as well.

I look forward to the next book in this new series.

Black Jack
Mystic Nights Book 4

MJ Nightingale

Undercover FBI agent, Jackson Black doesn’t expect to find love while working deep undercover on a RICO case. But he can’t resist Dawn, the sexy accountant, who keeps crossing his path during the investigation putting both of their lives on the line.

When Jackson meets Dawn she is filling in for a dealer at her family’s casino. He is quite taken with the dark haired beauty and things heat up very quickly.

What they both assume will be a one night stand, is fiery hot and sensuous. Realizing the pull Jackson tries to stay away from Dawn but finds it extremely difficult since she’s almost always at the casino.

This is a favorite scene as they leave for a real date.

“Hi, Dawn.” He stooped down and pressed a light kiss to her cheek. “You look nice today. I rented a car, hoping we could take a ride, talk, and have lunch somewhere other than the casino.”

“That sounds nice.” Good, she thought. He was thinking along the same lines as she.

“Why did you rent a car?” she asked as he took her elbow and led her from the lobby. “Are you not from Connecticut?” There she did it. Asked her first question.

“Actually, I am. I live in Hartford.” Just forty-five minutes away, Dawn thought, pleased. “But my cousin borrowed it. She lives in the city, too, and doesn’t have one. Her son had a birthday party to go to, and it was being held out of town, so she needed to use it while I was away last week. I didn’t think I’d need it today, so. . .” His voice trailed off. He had a cousin and second cousin in the capital.

“Oh, okay. So, you have family? You haven’t mentioned them before.”

He sighed as he weaved her through the crowded lobby. “I know. And I’m sorry about that.” They stepped into the crisp sunshine. “Alyssa is my only relative. Our parents were killed in a car crash when we were in college. We were both at UConn. I was a senior, and she was a freshman. She’s like a little sister to me, and her son is more like a nephew. He calls me Uncle Jack.”

Jack felt good telling Dawn about himself. He would tell her as much as he could without blowing his cover. He liked her. A lot. Wanted this to work. He just had to make sure she was safe. Last night when he spotted her in the elevator while he’d been working had been a close call. He’d been relieved when she hadn’t confronted him; at the same time, it bothered him. He’d decided then and there that he’d tell her as much as he could. He didn’t want what they could have together to be based on a lie. And he didn’t want any more close calls like the one last night. Her confronting him could have ruined everything.

The moment they walked out into the brisk air, he mentioned it. “I had a lousy evening last night. I wished I had been spending it with you, and seeing you in that elevator tucked away in the corner really bothered me.”

“You saw me?” she gasped. She looked into his eyes and saw him clearly struggling with something.

He nodded, but instead of explaining further he indicated a vehicle up ahead. “That’s mine. I rented the grey Ranger.”

“Why didn’t you say anything?” She was confused.

“Why didn’t you?” he asked, wanting to know her answer. She stopped before the passenger door of the Jeep. He held the handle but didn’t open it for her just yet. He wanted that answer.

She turned to him. “Last week, I ran scared. It was cowardly of me. I’ve been hurt before by guys I fell for. And I realized that night how much I could care for you, yet I knew so little about you. Seeing you with those women and that man bothered me. I didn’t know why, but I didn’t want to jump to any conclusions. I figured I’d ask you about it today.”

“Fair enough, and it’s kind of what I was figuring.” He lifted his hand to take a lock of hair that blew in her face and softly tucked it behind her ear. “I’m feeling it, too. And I know I haven’t revealed much about myself, but I’m hoping this date will do that.”

“I hope so,” she whispered softly, staring up into his grey eyes, eyes she could lose herself in. Yet, she was still scared of what this mysterious man might tell her.

“I do, too, kitten.” Jack smiled broadly upon this gorgeous woman. Her tentative smile gave him hope that he’d finally found a woman he could cherish forever. He, too, had a life of hurt. After losing his parents, he didn’t think he could love someone the way they had loved each other. It would hurt too much to lose someone you loved that way, but she was worth the risk. Deep down he knew it. However, he still hadn’t figured out how he could explain what he did for a living. He had been up half the night thinking about how he’d tell her.

He opened the door to the rented Jeep and watched as she got in. He helped her to buckle up, and she took the kiss he gave her.

Running to his side of the car, Jack climbed in. Though he was still not sure what he would say, he was more hopeful than he’d been in a long time.

Unfortunately this whole dating thing gets Dawn noticed by the guys Jack is setting up. When they are escorted to the ‘boss’ it’s Dawn that comes up with the perfect plan to catch them all.

Plenty of heat in more ways than one. I now have to go back and read the rest of this series. I want to know all of these wonderful characters.

Her Guarded Hero
Black Dawn Book 5

Caitlyn O’Leary

It’s been five years since his tragic loss and Navy SEAL, Dalton Sullivan heads to Lake Tahoe to be alone. The last thing he expects is horse trainer, Aurora Chance to literally fall at his feet. As danger and raw emotion churn around them, can Dalton be brought back into the light?

I love this series and Dalton is just one more team member to love. He has his demons and he’s come to Lake Tahoe to exercise them.

Aurora is a very strong woman who is an accomplished horsewomen. In addition to her family’s business of breeding, she works with abused horses to hopefully get them to the point they can be adopted.

This book starts out with a bang, literally as someone takes pot shots at Aurora and her horse. Fortunately Dalton is nearby and is able to give her a hand. As he gets her to the road where there will hopefully be a cell signal, she keeps him entertained with tales of her Grandparents. She also argues that the shots were random, from poachers and she was not the target.

With Sheriff Brody dismissing the shooting as poachers, Dalton makes a decision to help.

This is a favorite scene.

Dalton cleared his throat. “I think I might have an idea. At least for a little bit.”

Gunnar’s head swung to spear the younger man with a laser gaze.

“What? Do you know a way we can get Brody off his ass to do something? Dammit, he’s our friend, Aurora. He’s known you since you were in diapers.”

She covered her grandfather’s fist. “He’ll come around.”

“Let’s hope it’s before another attempt is made on your life,” he huffed. He looked back over at Dalton. “What’s your idea, Son?”

“I’m vacationing here for a week. How about I bunk with your two hands? That will allow me to keep an eye on things. Maybe take a look around and find out something.”

She thought her grandfather might kiss Petty Officer First Class Sullivan.

“We have cabins a half mile away from the barn, it gives the men privacy,” Gunnar explained, but then he hesitated. “I’d feel a lot better if you would stay closer to my granddaughter. We have two extra rooms here in the house. We can set you up in one of those. There’s a good size TV in one of them.”

“Weren’t you here to hike and explore the area?” Aurora asked. She didn’t need a babysitter, no matter how handsome he was.

“I was. But I like the looks of your ranch, and it’s been a while since I’ve been riding, so I’d enjoy this even more.” Sure, he would.

The man was just being a good sport.

“Look Dalton, we couldn’t impose on you like this,” Aurora protested.

“It’s not an imposition,” Gunnar said. “You heard the man. He wants to get back in the saddle.”

“Your grandfather is right.” Dalton said with a smile. “One of my former teammates has a big spread in Texas. That’s where I learned to ride. I would really love to be able to show up next time as a better horseman.”

“Well Aurora can definitely help you with that. She’s an expert, she not only trains and works with abused animals, she’s a pro at giving riding lessons.”

Dalton’s eyes lit up with amusement, while Aurora turned damn near purple.
Love Under Siege. Caitlyn O’Leary. Her Guarded Hero. Kindle Locations 14934-14951). Kindle Edition.

Plenty of heat between Dalton and Aurora that escalates rapidly even though both claim to want nothing more than temporary fun.

There’s definitely a bit of a communication break down, between Aurora and those trying to protect her as they try to track down the shooters.

I love the horses, Dalton’s teammates Aurora dubbed ‘the Scooby Team, and her friends Lindy and Crystal. Strong women are always what these men need.

Plenty of twists, turns and heat, plus a couple of surprises I didn’t see coming. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

Not Quite Broken
Callaghan Family and Friends

Abbie Zanders

Former POW Brian McCain is so busy fighting his demons, there’s not enough left over for anyone else – not even the one woman who has a way of shining light into his darkness. But when a serial killer turns his sights on her, Brian realizes he’s not quite as broken as he thinks he is.

I fell in love with Brian at the very beginning of this book.

Tori is attending Phoebe’s bridal shower and her ‘boyfriend’ Cole doesn’t pick her up as arranged. With the latest news reporting another missing woman, she’s about to call for an Uber, when Brian offers to drive her home.

This is a favorite scene as they leave the bar.

Tori ignored the tiny flutter that tried to take up residence behind her rib cage. Brian McCain was just being nice. His offer to give her a ride didn’t mean anything.

The serial nutcase who had been terrorizing the region had everyone on edge. Women were looking over their shoulders and men—particularly the protective types—were stepping up their game.

She wasn’t complaining. People could call her old-fashioned, but she liked knowing that someone cared enough to make the effort, and having big, strong men keeping watchful eyes made her feel safer.

Unfortunately, the guy she was seeing (emphasis on was) didn’t seem to care nearly as much. Granted, their relationship was still fairly new. They’d only gone out a few times, so maybe she was expecting too much.

You’ve never gone out with Brian McCain and he’s stepping up, her inner voice whispered.

Yes, well, not all men are created equal. Some are more chivalrous than others.

It wasn’t even as if she had asked Cole to be her designated driver. He had been the one to offer when they’d been in the BodyWorks lobby with a group of others discussing the bachelorette party.

Yes, but that was only after Kieran put him on the spot and gave him the stink eye.

Still, he could have said no. She wouldn’t have taken it too personally. She certainly would have preferred that to getting stood up.

It would have made him look bad, though, and Cole is all about looking good.

True enough.

“All done. Ready to go?” She nodded, silencing her internal conversation and gathering her phone and purse. Brian held the door open for her and she walked through, offering a quiet thank you to let him know she appreciated the courtesy.

They went into the back lot, where Brian pointed to a Jeep Wrangler. Judging by the mud splattered along the front and sides, he liked off-roading, too.

“Hope this is okay,” he said almost apologetically as he opened the door for her there, too.

“Perfect.” She used the running board and the suspended hand grip to lift herself into the passenger seat. “I’ve got one myself.”

His eyebrows shot up. “Yeah?”

“You seem surprised.”

“Not a lot of women drive Jeeps.”

The response tumbled out before she could stop it. “I’m not a lot of women.”
Love Under Siege. Abbie Zanders. Not Quite Broken. Kindle Locations 12514-12534. Kindle Edition.

I love Tori’s internal conversations and her inner evaluations of every situation.

These two have a lot in common and begin doing stuff together as friends. Lots of fun stuff. Unfortunately Brian doesn’t believe he deserves someone as wonderful as Tori as anything more than a friend.

Just as things really heat up between them Brian backs off. It hurts and Tori misses the things they did together.

An emotional tale, with lots of fun, laughter, tears and a twist that will have you turning the pages for more.

Maryann Jordan’s Bio and Links

I have always been an avid reader. I joke that I “cut my romance teeth” on the old historical romance books. I’ve written as a hobby for over 30 years. In 2014, I finally gave in to the characters in my head pleading for their story to be told. Thus, Emma’s Home was created.

My books are filled with sweet romance and hot sex; mystery, suspense, real life characters and situations. My heroes are alphas, take charge men who love the strong, independent women they fall in love with.

I worked as a counselor in a high school and have been involved in education for the past 30 years. I recently retired and now can spend more time devoted to my writing.

I have been married to a wonderfully patient man for 35 years and have 2 adult, very supportive daughters.

When writing, my dog or one of my cats will usually be found in my lap!

I love to hear from readers.

Dragon Undercover – Dark Scales Division Book 1 by Lia Davis and Kerry Adrienne

Dragon Undercover
Dark Scales Division Book 1
Lia Davis
Kerry Adrienne

Dragon shifter and team lead for DSD—Dark Scales Division—Owen Ashton has never lost a case.

When his sister’s murderer turns serial killer, he is determined to take the rogue dragon down, for good. His team tracks the murderer to a small town in Minnesota and Owen goes undercover to finally end Huff’s reign of terror. The last thing Owen expected was to discover his mate vacationing in the lake house next to his.

Nadia Hasting, along with her sister Sage, take the first vacation in years since their parents’ deaths. Visiting the lake house their family rented every year when they were children is exactly what they need for downtime before Sage heads to college. The hot neighbor is a bonus, but Nadia isn’t sure she’s ready to date. But the pull toward the sexy stranger proves too strong to ignore.

When Sage goes missing, Nadia turns to Owen to rescue her sister from a mad man.

But will Owen’s dragon scare her away from the one man that can save them all?

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogo

Owen was searching, set up in an idyllic cabin by a lake. His objective, find and kill the rogue dragon who killed his sister and then progressed to kill others including humans.

Nadia and her sister Sage have come to the cabin their parents used to rent when they were young, a vacation before Sage heads off to college.

When Nadia and Owen meet, the attraction is mutual but the timing kind of sucks. Owen’s dragon immediately recognizes his mate, but being as she’s human it poses some problems. However, Sage is all for the two of them getting together.

This is a favorite scene as Sage takes off to be with a friend.

He rang the doorbell again. His team hadn’t sent him any more information, and he hadn’t picked up any leads on Huff yet, though he’d looked over the documents again and tried to sense any dark magic around the water when he’d gone for a run.

No sign at all. If Huff was at the lake, he was doing a damn good job hiding out.

Sage opened the door, her pink and silver phone in hand. A wide smile brightened her features. “Hi! Come on in.”

“Thanks.” He followed her. The house felt much larger on the inside.

Bright and cheery, like Nadia and Sage.

“Naaadia,” Sage called. “Owen’s here.”

“I’m in the kitchen.”

“This way.” Sage pointed.

They wended through a couple unpacked suitcases in the hall.

Sage shrugged. “I didn’t get completely unpacked last night.”

“I see that.”

When they crossed into the kitchen, Nadia turned and her face lit up. He could feel happiness wafting off her.

“Hey, Owen.”

“How are you?”

“I’m good. You?”

He nodded. “Hungry.”

“Me, too.”

“I hate to break up the conversation,” Sage interjected. She directed her next words to Nadia. “Stephanie is having a get-together and sleepover tonight. I’m heading over there now. If that’s okay with you, of course.”

Did she wink at her sister or had he imagined it?

Nadia frowned. “Tonight? We have dinner with Owen.” She leaned against the countertop. “Can’t you meet up with her another night?”

“It’s been so long since I’ve seen her. Since her parents moved out here, it’s hard to get together. And we both go to different colleges in the fall.”

“But we have dinner plans.”

“It’s just one night. I’ll be back by tomorrow afternoon, I promise.”

Nadia rolled her eyes and sighed. “I expect to see you at some point during our vacation.”

Sage kissed her sister on the cheek. “You will. You two have fun.”

Owen followed her to the door. “Be careful.”

“Always.” Sage stared at him. “Why so serious?”

He followed her out the front door. “It’s nothing. I’m the cautious type.” He couldn’t tell her the truth. He had no evidence Liam Huff was at the lake, and there was no need to worry her.

“You and Nadia have fun.”

The young woman bounced off toward the lake where a small motorboat waited. Stephanie stood on the dock and waved.

Nadia tapped Owen on the shoulder. “Looks like it’s just you and me for dinner.”

His dragon pranced, wings quivering. He’d have his mate all to himself. Yeah, it was going to be a long night of trying to keep his hands off her.
Davis, Lia. Adrienne, Kerry. Dragon Undercover (Dark Scales Division Book 1) (pp. 33-36). After Glows Publishing. Kindle Edition.

A delightful dinner and getting to know you conversation leads to way more.

These two got to the sizzling really quick, but that cooled very quickly with a frantic call from Stephanie saying someone took Sage.

A tense race against time, as Owen and his team search for the rogue and Sage. With the added problem of Owen having to tell Nadia he’s a dragon shifter.

Fast paced, with hold your breath suspense, plenty of sizzle and a few tears.

The Latest in the Baytown Boys Series! Waiting For Sunrise – Baytown Boys Book 7 By Maryann Jordan

Waiting for Sunrise
Baytown Boys Book 7
Maryann Jordan

Baytown Boys

Military duty called them away to war zones, but after tours overseas, the group of friends found their way back home as men, seeking the peaceful little seaside town. Now, the band of brothers, together once more, work to provide a place for less fortunate veterans to call home.

Belle Gunn has watched all her friends find love in Baytown, but for the shy nurse, love has not yet come her way. Wearing her heart on her sleeve, she throws herself into her job in a nursing home and continued studies. Watching the sun rise each morning, she looks for the new day, with all its possibilities, to begin.

Hunter Simmons, landed in Baytown, having heard of the welcoming attitude toward veterans. Since leaving the Navy, he had drifted until finding work in the little coastal town’s nursing home. Working with and living near the beautiful Belle makes him wonder if he can finally settle down.

Mysteries abound at the nursing home and a freak accident brings them together. To stay together, Belle will have to deal with her past and Hunter will have to work through his current problems, for them to find love.

Scenes of a sexual nature and language are consistent with what you would find in an R rated movie. For readers 18+.

I love strong women and the women of Baytown are that and so much more. Belle wasn’t part of the original group she was a couple of years behind them.

Always working hard and now studying to finish her RN, Belle always rises early to watch the sunrise. The beginning of a new day brings memories of her grandmother who instilled this habit in her.

Hunter has been attracted to Belle since he first saw her. He’s managed to keep his distance even though they both work at the Careview Nursing Home. That is until she injures herself because of the placement his ladder as he changed lightbulbs.

This is a favorite scene.

Pulling a small notebook from her pocket, she looked down at the notes she had taken while studying last night. The test was still two days away, but she believed in being as prepared as possible.

Suddenly slamming into a hard object, she screamed briefly before quickly finding herself on the floor, sprawled out and in pain amongst broken glass.

“Auggh, shit.” Not one to typically curse in public, this occasion warranted the slip.

She cringed. Oh, no. Of course Hunter would witness this.

Gaining her bearings, she peeked open her eyes and found Hunter staring at her. Maybe if I lie here long enough, he’ll just disappear.

Hunter stared down, horrified at the scene below him. Changing the long, thin, fluorescent light fixtures in the back hallway, he had been standing on the stepladder close to the wall. With the residents at dinner, he had determined it would be a good time and a quiet place to get the job completed. Never hearing anyone approach, he had been shocked when the ladder suddenly jolted violently underneath him, causing the light to fly from his hand, shattering to the floor.

Hearing a yelp of surprise before it turned into a cry of pain, he grabbed the ladder, forcing it to steady. Twisting his body, he looked down, seeing the crumpled form of the woman he had been surreptitiously staring at for two months.
Jordan, Maryann. Waiting for Sunrise: Baytown Boys Series (Kindle Locations 290-304). Kindle Edition.

Now he finds he can’t stay away. He absolutely needs to work things out and there’s things he needs to tell her. The timing isn’t right though.

I swear I was yelling at Hunter the whole way through this book. With all the guys in law enforcement working to curb the drug traffic in Baytown, the trailer park with the problems in the back area. Belle stumbling on things and so much more.

I loved all the interactions with Brittany, Belle really was key in helping her become all she can be.

I couldn’t put this book down, I laughed, I cried, I held my breath, and I might have cursed a few times with the twists and turns. So much I didn’t see coming!

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

Heather Long has done it again! This tale is woven so intricately it captures you and doesn’t let go until the last word is read and then you want more.

This is a difficult book, but worth every minute. Cassius is a brutal Alpha, he has to be in order to rule. However, he has a vision of what he wants his pack to be and will go to any lengths to achieve it.

With misgivings Serafina, lets her Omega Sovvan decide whether or not she will help Cassius achieve his goal.

There is already unrest with the knowledge of an Omega coming to Sutter Butte, but even Cassius didn’t realize the extent of the hate and brutality that would be shown at her arrival. The action starts right at the beginning and even as they converse, umm, growl at each other you can feel the heat rising between them. A favorite scene is when Cassius sees her on his roof.

“Woman.” Cassius’ voice echoed through the silence, and she jerked her gaze toward the yard, He stood just inside the gates, which closed silently behind him. “What the hell are doing up there?”

“Taking a walk.”

“On the roof?” Irritation pebbled his words.

“Well your yard isn’t that big, and I’m bored.” She actually hadn’t meant to admit the last. “I need…I want out of here. I hate feeling like a prisoner.” Her hand trembled, and the shaking seemed to radiate through her. “I need to run.”
Heather Long. Desert Wolf (Kindle Locations 1760-1763). Kindle Edition.

Oh and run they did, as Cassius reveals a side to him no one has ever seen before.

Claire and Tyler, from Willow Bend join in the action, with Mason’s approval. We also see Julian, and all the other Alphas with the exception of Diesel, as they reflect on all the things that have happened in this book.

A fast paced read with plenty of twists, turns, surprises, laughter and tears. As I re-read this series I remember why I love these wolves so very much.

Fighting For What’s His
Warrior Fight Club Book 2
New York Times Bestselling Author
Laura Kaye

This fight club has one rule:
you must be a veteran…

Resisting her only makes him want her more…

Private investigator Billy Parrish is good at three things —fighting, investigating, and sex. MMA training with the other vets in the Warrior Fight Club keeps his war-borne demons at bay—mostly, and one night stands ensure no one gets too close. But then his best friend from the Army Rangers calls in a favor.

Shayna Curtis is new to town, fresh out of grad school, and full of hope for the future. With a new job starting in a month, she’s grateful when her brother arranges a place for her to stay while she apartment hunts. But she never expected her roommate to be so brooding. Or so sexy.

Billy can’t wait for Shay to leave—because the longer she’s there, the more he wants her in his bed. To stay. He can’t have her—that much he knows. But when fight club stops taking off the edge, Billy lets down his guard…and starts fighting for what’s his.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogo

Shayna has landed a new job in DC. A photo-editor for the Gazette. Her brother Ryan, although deployed, calls upon his friend and discharged Ranger Billy to give her shelter and protect her. Well the shelter part is easy, protecting is debatable.

When Shayna arrives, Billy is late and it’s pouring rain. Not to be deterred and silently thanking her brother, she breaks in.

Of course when Billy does get there he thinks correctly that someone had broken into his home. He just didn’t expect it to be Shayna.

Billy and Shayna have more in common than they realize. PTSD takes many forms and they both have it in similar ways.

I loved the interaction with the members of the WFC, the dinners were fun and enlightening.

Plenty of hiliarity, creative cursing, and impressive name calling lace this book as these two grow closer.

I truly enjoy these books with the unique approaches to PTSD and the colorful characters dealing with it. A favorite scene is in the excerpt below, don’t forget to read it and also enter the giveaway!

5 Contented Purrs for Laura!

“Shay, wait.” The words came out of Billy’s mouth before he even thought to say them. As if keeping Shayna around had been pure instinct.

And maybe it had been, because despite staying away from her all week, just one night in her presence had him craving more of her. Her humor. Her sarcasm. Her easy acceptance.

Maybe it was because of how little sleep he’d had all week. Or because doing his job well had meant delivering to his client the terrible news of her husband’s infidelity. Or because his surveillance work had required a lot of hours of sitting in his car—and the constant press of his back against the seat had awakened the phantom pain of long-ago fried nerves that he sometimes felt something fierce. All of which had him feeling exhausted.

Billy sighed and crossed the room to the staircase. “Come with me. Tomorrow, I mean.”

From where she stood on the fourth step, Shayna frowned. “Dude, it’s okay.”

He shook his head. “I want you to come.”

Her frown deepened. “Why? It’s not a big deal. Really.”

Why did he want her to come? When just moments before he’d felt so ambivalent and even a little embarrassed about it?

Billy didn’t have to think long on the answer—because she’d reacted as if WFC was not only perfectly normal, but really cool. And it was. But it was also fucking therapy of a sort, even though the format was something way different than sitting on a couch and spilling your emotional guts.

He needed to make up for hurting her feelings—and he knew he’d done just that. The expressiveness of her face made her an open book. And telling the truth was the best way to make up for it. He knew that, too.

“I was fucking embarrassed about what you’d think. That’s why I hesitated when you asked. Not because I didn’t want you to come. Besides, you could meet some of my friends.” Unusual heat rushed into Billy’s face, and he dropped his chin to his chest.

Shay made her way down to him until he was staring at her bare feet and her bright red toenails. “Did you think I’d tease you or something?” she asked, her voice neutral.

He forced himself to lift his chin and meet her gaze. “You do like to bust my balls.”

“Not about this. Never about this.” Her expression was so fucking earnest, and her face was even more beautiful.

He nodded, feeling the truth of her words down deep. After all, she’d seen his scars and heard him talk about how hard it was to come home from deployment and been nothing but cool about that, too. “So. will you come?”

Her smile answered before her words did. “Yeah. Sounds fun. I’d like to come. But I promise I’ll stay out of your hair.”

“You don’t have to stay out of my hair, Shayna.”

“Oh, good, because this is driving me crazy,” she said, her fingers suddenly combing through his hair. “You made it stand up funny.”

Another Willow Bend Novella! Single Wicked Wolf – Wolves of Willow Bend Book 7.5 by Heather Long

Single Wicked Wolf
Wolves of Willow Bend Book 7.5
USA Today Bestselling Author
Heather Long

He’s single, wicked, and a perfect pretend boyfriend…but exactly who is she fooling?

Murphy DeWitt enjoyed two years touring American consulates in Europe as an assistant to a diplomatic attaché. It was a dream come true, and a hell of a learning experience. A master of languages, she knows how to get her point across. Romance, however, proves to be a tongue twister. Now en-route to Willow Bend for a friend’s wedding—without the make-believe boyfriend she created for her family—she debates how to confess her deception. Luckily, her flight includes a fantastically hot wolf that leaves her breathless and contemplating all kinds of naughty things.

Giovanni Conti thrives on protecting others. As a Centurion for the Seven Hills pack in Italy, it’s his pleasure to serve his Alpha wherever he is needed. Dispatched ahead in preparation for the Alpha pair’s trip to Willow Bend, he has no problem entertaining the sexy wolf he encounters in the airport. The last thing the playboy wolf expects, however, is to find in Murphy the most captivating chase of his life…

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

I think this is my favorite novella, at least up to this point in the series.

With Margo and Salvatore traveling to Willow Bend for her brother Matt’s wedding, the Italian Alpha sends his Centurion Giovanni to do advance security.

Giovanni’s flight takes him to Chicago where he smells a female wolf and strategically places himself in her way.

Murphy DeWitt has been traveling the globe as a diplomatic interpreter. Returning to Willow Bend is something she has been looking forward to, with one tiny exception. Her mother thinks she’s found a wolf boyfriend and she doesn’t have one with her.

Murphy literally runs into Giovanni, and thus begins an interesting relationship.

With their flight fortuitously delayed, he convinces Murphy to join him for a meal. However it is a lot more than just a meal he has in mind. In his dominant wolf way he changes her flight to first class, orders up the meal and arranges a shower for her at the First Class Lounge Spa. A shower she and her wolf decide to let him share, but not before she determines it has nothing to do with politics or their packs. Talk about a hot, steamy shower, this one raises the heat to a whole new level.

During their flight Giovanni also books a hotel and rents a car for the two of them to travel from Chicago to Willow Bend. Protective much?

One of my favorite scenes (of which there are many) is during Murphy’s first run since her return to Willow Bend. She has discovered the guest house where Giovanni is staying and is intercepted first by the hunter Collin then by her Alpha, Mason.

“I went to the bar looking for you but Joanie mentioned you needed a run.”

When he released her, she backed off a pace and nodded to him. Cocking her head, she kept her ears focused on him.

“So you ran all the way to where Giovanni is staying, hmm?”

He was here? The longing to go and see him flooded her all over again. Dipping her head, she lowered her gaze in apology. If she shifted she could ask Mason if she could go see him.

“I know you two have been dating, but for now I need the two of you to keep your distance. Salvatore will be here tomorrow and that always makes things a little tense.” He didn’t owe her any explanations. Orders were orders. The desire to see Giovanni warred with her Alpha’s wishes. “If it makes you feel any better, he will be at the wedding. I had a job offer I wanted to discuss with you, if you’re up to it.”

Excitement threaded with confusion punched through her. The wedding was more than twenty four hours away, almost a day and a half. She wanted to sidle and wander in the direction Collin vanished. Maybe it was the guest house. If she accidentally tripped over Giovanni…

“Murphy.” Command halted her in place and she sat, tail tucked. The Alpha’s strength rolled over her and flattened her ears. A low growl rumbled in his throat, and Mason looked away from her toward the night sky. “Another one, dammit.” She had no idea what he was talking about, but decided it was probably for the best. “Damn Italians.” But the last words carried no heat, just exasperation so she flicked her ears forward.
Heather Long. Single Wicked Wolf (Kindle Locations 1027 – 1039). Kindle Edition.

We see a lot of folks in this one, Julian the mysterious head enforcer, Mason, Margo and Salvatore, and Matt and Shiloh of course since it’s their wedding.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable read, no angst, no drama, just pure sexy fun!

A Hero’s Home – Resolution Ranch Book 4 by Tessa Layne

A Hero’s Home
Resolution Ranch Book 4
Tessa Layne

When a grouchy veteran rescues a cheerful hippie will it be a match made in heaven or a disaster waiting to happen?

When Army Ranger Jason Case accepts an invitation from his closest friend to join Resolution Ranch, the last thing he expected was to be a hero to Prairie’s resident hippie, Millie Prescott. He’s no hero, and he wants to be left alone.

Millie knows she and Jason have a cosmic connection – he saved her from certain death. There’s only one problem…

•He Loves Bacon – She Loves Tofu
•He’s a hardened warrior – She’s a peacemaker
•He’s the man of her dreams – She’s a thorn in his side

Neither Jason or Millie could have predicted the blistering heat that erupts between them, and in a moment of lust-fueled insanity, the grouchy vet agrees to help Miss Sunshine save her struggling vineyard and put Prairie on the map for heirloom wine.

But trouble comes to Prairie when Jason’s family decides they’ll stop at nothing to bring Jason back where he belongs, running the Case wine empire. And Jason must decide how far he’s willing to go to ensure the woman he’s fallen for doesn’t become collateral damage.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

Millie runs the organic grocery store, she and her father own and operate Moonbeam Acres. An organic farm and vineyard.

When Jason Case comes to Resolution Ranch his intention is to work with the cattle, horses and the other veterans who come to find their way. He has kissed the wine business good-bye. There’s plenty of others in his family to take over Case Wineries.

Now Sterling has assigned him to pick up items for the silent auction, taking place after the fund-raising concert. One of the baskets is from Millie and includes a case of her wine.

This is a favorite scene as Jason gets roped into trying her homemade wine.

Across the lawn, Millie stood. Jason would bet the twenty in his pocket she was going to check on her basket. This was his chance to apologize. “I’ll be right back.” Without waiting for Sterling to comment, he took off at an angle, hoping to intercept her before she reached the auction tables. He followed at a distance, waiting for the right moment to catch her attention. She stopped and bent to study the sheet. The slump of her shoulders as she turned away told him all he needed to know. The knot in his chest squeezed. He knew that kind of disappointment. He worked his way down the row, stopping at her basket. Just as he suspected. Not one offer. The volunteers were getting closer, collecting the bid sheets. He bent and scrawled his number halfway down the sheet. What was a few hundred dollars out of his pocket for a good cause? He could send the basket to Johnny’s widow, Macey and her daughter. They’d get a kick out of it. And he could go to bed tonight with his conscience a little lighter.

He should go find her, do more than ease his conscience with a pity purchase. His mouth still burned from the sensation of their kiss. But if he followed her, what then? Another kiss, or more? Then what? The future rolled out in front of his eyes. Either she’d learn his family name and suck up to him like all the socialites at the club, until it came time for things to get real. Or, worse, his family would sink their claws into her, somehow find a way to use a woman as leverage to chain him to the family business. They’d done it before, what was to stop them from doing it again? But he was smarter now, too jaded, even. He was done being used. Best to leave Millie to her own devices.

Once free from the tables, Jason searched the crowd, but Millie had disappeared. It was for the best, but why did he feel just the tiniest bit disappointed? Because if it was offered, his dick reminded him, he’d take another kiss like the last.

Shaking his head, he turned and headed back to his post just off-stage. When he arrived, Sterling stood talking to Millie. Damn. “Jase, you remember Millie from this morning?”

His smirk said it all.

Jason gave them both a tight smile. “Nice to see you again.”

Sterling raised an eyebrow. “Millie was getting ready to let me taste her wine.”

And? He made a noncommittal grunt. Sterling’s motives were completely transparent, and he wasn’t going to play along. Not for love or money.

Sterling turned back to Millie. “I’ve got to get back to work, but I’m sure Jason would be happy to taste your wine.”

Fucker. “I… ah… well, yeah. Sure.” Jeeze, he sounded like a total douchebag. “I’d be happy to.” He forced a smile.

Millie turned her enormous eyes his direction. “It’s okay,” she murmured. “I can see you’re busy.”

Yeah. Total. Douchebag. He glanced at Sterling, whose eyes danced with glee. For a moment, he allowed himself to imagine all matter of evil payback. But his gaze tangled with Millie’s and before he could stop himself, he shook his head. “Not busy at all. Happy to have a taste.”

Her face lit. “Really? I have a couple bottles with me.”

His stomach lurched, and he had the distinct sensation of free-falling. He was playing a dangerous game with himself where Millie Prescott was concerned. He fought to bring his thoughts back to his brain, where they belonged.
Layne, Tessa. A Hero’s Home: Resolution Ranch (pp. 24-26). Shady Layne Media. Kindle Edition.

Yeah, Jason has a problem named Millie, but he’s not sure he minds at all.

This book was lots of fun, watching these two kind of battle it out, yet so steamy when they come together.

The problems start with a plant, wine, and Case’s family.

A page turner you will laugh and cry over.

Blog Tour, Excerpt And ARC Review for Caden – Apache County Shifters Book 2 by TL Reeve and Michele Ryan

Apache County Shifters Book 2
TL Reeve and Michele Ryan

Caden Raferty messed up—big time. He’s turned his back on his family and friends, but most of all his mate, Danielle Blueriver.

Danielle is done with love and done with Caden. After two near death experiences, she’s regressed into herself, not wanting to be seen or heard. Her life is crumbling down around her and the only thing giving her the will to live are her boys, Aiden and Nicolas.

But, an old foe isn’t done with either of them, and once again, they are thrust together in a situation neither can get out of.

Can Danielle and Caden find their path to happiness this time, or will the sins of their past destroy their future?

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150

Caden has really messed everything up when he went into a total downspin. Now finally sober, he needs to make amends with his mate and his children. He doesn’t even know Nic, since he believed the word of a now dead psycho.

Danielle has been neglecting herself and concentrating on Aiden and Nic. She doesn’t really understand the mating process or what’s going on with her body, and she’s lost a lot of weight. A fact she’s been hiding from everyone.

When another orphan shows up with a lot of injuries her and Keeley take on a couple of helpers for the new orphanage. But the child’s appearance has far more significance.

Raymond Quincy, Tiffany and Marjorie are the prime suspects in that child’s abuse. Quincy is also the reason they have a lion pride with them in Window Rock. He forced Rapier and his pack to flee for their lives, as he has done with other packs.

Rapier is instrumental in helping Caden, sort of take the bull by the horns. But he has some issues of his own.

Even as Caden begins to reconcile with his mate Danielle, bond with his son and make amends to Aiden, plots begin to emerge. Keeping their families and pack safe is the highest priority. Second is finding the traitor among them and getting rid of Quincy once and for all.

Action, drama, tears, romance, suspense this book has it all!

I can’t wait for the next book in this series!

A favorite scene is in the excerpt below, don’t forget to read it!

5 Contented Purrs for T.L. and Michele!

“None of that now,” she whispered. “It’s okay, my sweet boy. Mommy’s sorry.”

“Sounds like he could use some food in his belly.” Mrs. Martin appeared behind the counter while Aiden toddled over to her with his box of cookies in his hands. “This should help you out for a couple of weeks. Remember, if you need anything, the pack is here for you. We’re all here for you.”

“Thank you.” Danielle grabbed for the cold bag and Mrs. Martin stayed her hand. “Is something wrong?”

“You can’t keep sliding into the shadows. You’re not a whisper on the wind. You’re not even a willow. You’re a reed. Hollow. You go through the day pasting a smile on your face. Laugh when appropriate. Saying thank you. Please. You’re welcome.” Mrs. Martin leaned toward her. “I see your pain. I feel it. It’s electric. A current in the water so strong it takes a person’s breath away. You’re not fooling anyone.”

“Uh…” Danielle didn’t know what to say. “Thanks.” She smiled at Aiden. “Tell Mrs. Martin thank you.”

Aiden gave her a toothy grin. “Tank ‘ous.”

“You’re very welcome, my boy.” Mrs. Martin waved at him. “Danielle, remember what I said.”

Danielle gave a curt nod. “See you in a couple of weeks.”

She couldn’t get out of there quick enough. The air surrounding her became oppressive as Nicolas began to cry harder. She realized it was because the black mass of negative emotions seeped through the wall like an oily sludge. The quicker she tried to re-enforce the construct, the more holes appeared. She needed to get home. She couldn’t fall apart out in public. She couldn’t let anyone see how much Caden’s betrayal hurt her.

“Mama?” Aiden blinked at her as she lifted him into his car seat. “Ou ‘kay?”

She swallowed hard and took a second, afraid he’d hear grief in her voice. “I’m fine, big boy. How about a cookie and some milk when we get home?”

He nodded emphatically. “Yes, Mama. Nic too. Hungee.”

“Yes, he is. Silly Mama. Forgot his bottle.” She made a show of frowning at him then rolling her eyes. Each practiced movement meant to keep Aiden from seeing the frayed ends of her emotional state.

“Looks like you could use a hand.”

Icy fingers of dread slid down her spine. At one time, the sound of his voice brought her so much pleasure. Just a whisper of it filled her with anticipation. Those nights she spent curled in his embrace talking about their future and the idea of falling in love with him had been so effortless. She’d instantly felt the connection to him the day they arrived in Window Rock. The cocky smirk on his face. The way his blue eyes twinkled with a hint of sensual heat and the feel of his hand curling around hers when he said, “Pleasure…” It was like he said, “I’ve spent my whole life waiting for this moment. Welcome home.”

“No, I’ve got it.” Danielle took the opportunity to push a strand of her hair behind her ear to cover the track of tears sliding down her left cheek. “No need to interrupt your day to help me.”

One of my Absolute Favorite Books! River Wolf – Wolves of Willow Bend Book 7 by Heather Long

River Wolf
Wolves of Willow Bend Book 7
USA Today Bestselling Author
Heather Long

Brett Dalton, Alpha of Hudson River, isolated himself from his pack mates after one betrayed him. The once, easygoing Alpha has become taciturn, remote and unforgiving. His pack worries for him, but they too have suffered a devastating blow. When several members leave to join Three Rivers, the pack faces the threat of dissolution until Brett’s best friend and Lone Wolf, Luc Danes returns to Hudson River accompanied by a beautiful young human—or is she? Something about the woman consumes Brett. Has Luc come home to help or to take the pack from Brett?

Colby Jensen wrapped up thousands of hours of community service working at the hospital in Maine when an injured Luc Danes rolled through the door. The impossible patient drove the nurses crazy, but when Danes offered her money no strings attached to drive him to New York, she agreed. The last thing she expected was to arrive in the small Westchester County town and to meet the craziest collection of residents—especially the devastatingly sexy Brett Dalton. Part of her wants to hit the road, the rest wants to make him smile and he keeps making excuses for her to stay.

Then she sees the wolves…and is exposed to a world she can barely imagine. When Brett discovers a secret about her, nothing will be the same again. Now she will find herself torn between a world she isn’t sure she can understand and the man who has taken her heart hostage…

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

I fell in love with Brett in Wolf Claim, a book that defines the Brett we see in this book. We also got a glimpse of him in Bayou Wolf at the summit of the Alphas. So now I really hate seeing him hiding away, almost like a lone wolf instead of the Alpha. When his friend and lone wolf Luc ends up in a Maine hospital in a coma, he tells the enforcer to bring him to Hudson River for recovery.

Luc in his current state needs to get to Hudson River fast. Instead of waiting for the enforcer, he enlists the aide of Colby, the nursing assistant doing his care.

Colby is a hard-headed, infuriating, caring, big hearted, nursing assistant. She is the only one that seems to be able to ‘calm the beast’ in room 510. He’s angry in pain and he wants to leave. She agrees to take Luc to NY on her way to Florida. With her community service completed, her intention is to start a new life far away.

Colby seems human, but is she? She smells different sometimes, to quote Luc ‘pack but not pack’.

This is a favorite scene after Colby delivers Luc to Brett.

So not ready to be awake…A knock on the door intruded in her drifting and she groaned. Dammit, she was a guest. She couldn’t stay in bed all day. In fact, what she needed to do was get up, shower, dress and get her ass on the road. Florida seemed a hell of a long way to go, though. Rolling over, she shoved the blankets away then climbed out of the bed. Glaring at the light between the curtains, she rubbed a hand over her face then stumbled to the door.

Opening it a crack, she gazed at her host. Goddammit. He looked perfect. Dressed in a clean, nicely-pressed shirt with the top two buttons open to reveal the faint curls of dark against his chest and smelling like heaven, he looked good enough to eat. His hair wasn’t even damp, though it fell in a soft wave toward his forehead. He’d been up long enough to shower and dress—and he wore a smile.

“Ugh,” she sighed. “Please God, tell me you are not one of those happy morning people.”

The corner of his sensual mouth quirked higher. The effect on his expression devastated her sleepy senses. No human should ever look so damn good without coffee. The combination of rake and boy next door added to his appeal, but the trace of scars and mottled skin gave him a ruggedness she desperately wanted to smooth away. “I woke you.”

“Not exactly,” she admitted, rubbing her cheek against the door and leaning on it a little more heavily. Everything ached and she wanted to go back to sleep. “I’m used to getting by on a lot less sleep.” And rolling out of bed to go to work for eight hour shifts that, as often as not, turned into ten to twelve hours on her feet. “I think I am more tired than I thought.” She yawned the last three words and, when she glanced at him again, his expression softened.

Extending a finger, he traced the line of her cheek. It was a soothing motion, one which left her eyes half-closing in pleasure. “Go back to bed, Colby.” His voice washed over her. “I’ll be in my office working.”

“I can’t laze about in bed all day.” No matter how good it sounded.

“Why not?”

“Because…” She had to go to Florida or at least say her goodbyes. She was a guest, and not even an intentional one. “…Luc. I should probably check on him.”

“He’s fine. The doctor is with him.” The indulgence in his voice evaporated, but the steadiness in his tone remained. “Go back to sleep. When you wake up, come find me. We’ll have coffee.”

Tempting. So. So. Tempting.

“I’m up now…but coffee sounds like heaven. Really, really strong coffee.”

“Double pot? I made one. I can run it through again.”

Colby groaned at the idea. Now that he’d mentioned it, she could smell the coffee. It proved even more alluring than the sweet vanilla and jasmine entwining the pine of his cologne on her pillow. Releasing the door to stretch, she would have thumped her tail if she’d had one. “Yes, please, if it wouldn’t be too much to ask.”

Silence greeted her comment, and she found Brett gazing at her, rapt admiration in his eyes as he trailed his gaze down her body and up again.

Fuck me… She still only wore a t-shirt and panties, and she’d just given him a show. “Crap. Sorry.” Slamming the door shut, she leaned against it. Adrenaline burned through the remaining traces of sleepiness—adrenaline and a healthy dose of lust. Having him look at her like that warmed her inside and out.

“Please.” His voice stroked her through the door. “Don’t apologize. I’ll go fix the coffee. Come and find me.”

The invitation had her toes curling, and she bit her lip. “I will,” she said, then added in a low whisper. “I promise.”

“I’ll be waiting.”

A shiver skated over her spine, and she closed her eyes. Maybe she should have invited him inside to go back to bed with her. Inappropriate as hell and impulsive, but she bet Brett would wake her even better than the coffee.

He already has…
Long, Heather. River Wolf: Wolves of Willow Bend (pp. 131-133). Heather Long. Kindle Edition.

I loved this tale set where I used to live in NY, I could visualize the area as I read. The river, SUNY, all of it. I did a lot of giggling in this one. Colby is a bit of a smart ass and each time Brett gets her to stay as Luc requested is a struggle.

We also see Gillian and Owen from Willow Bend again since Gillian is helping to train the young healer, Travis. Gillian befriends Colby and gives her reasons to stay in Hudson River.

The romance is snarky and hot and one really shouldn’t call an Alpha a dog…
