Nicole Salway left Dark Falls eighteen years ago with no intention of ever returning. Destroyed beyond repair, she closed that chapter of her life for good. But nightmares have plagued her for two decades. Nonsensical nightmares that have kept her from leading a normal life. The Dark Falls police department failed her as a young girl, but now she’s a detective herself, and her hometown needs her help. Returning to the place where it all began could crack open her past and leave her raw and exposed if she’s not careful.

Mason England isn’t fond of going undercover without his usual partner, but the state has assigned one of their own detectives to help solve a horrific murder. After all, the victim is the governor’s daughter, and all evidence points to a local club. Mason’s temporary partner takes his breath away the moment she enters the precinct. But Nicole is a conundrum. She guards her secrets close, so close that Mason realizes no one has ever penetrated her walls. .

Sharing her past with Mason, or anyone, isn’t an option. Nicole does not date. Ever. But Mason is persistent and patient. As Nicole’s past unravels, threatening to destroy her, Mason just might prove capable of grabbing the pieces as they fall and putting her back together again.

review-fall-cornucopia

I received an ARC of this book, so I am getting out of order. Now I have to go back to read the other two. I am loving these books.

Mason finds himself attracted to his temporary partner Nicole Salway from the moment he lays eyes on her. He knew she was qualified or the State wouldn’t have sent her to partner with him, he just wasn’t expecting her to be so attractive.

Nicole didn’t like being back in Dark Falls, she has nightmares from the events that led to her family moving away. She even changed her name so she could have some normality in her life. She never planned to return but her hometown needed a woman to go undercover with one of their own. Since the victim was the governor’s daughter she couldn’t refuse.

She was also skeptical about going into a BDSM club as a couple with Mason. She knows nothing about the lifestyle other than what she’s read.

This is a favorite scene as they go to talk to the victim’s roommate.

He didn’t know much about Detective Salway, but he did rationalize the state wouldn’t have sent her to partner with him if she wasn’t incredibly qualified—a fact that warranted him ignoring her looks and taking her as seriously as he would any other partner.

When they were settled in his black Tahoe, he turned to face her. “You want to fire questions at me, or you want me to give you a rundown of the most important parts?”

She tipped her head to one side and asked the last question on earth he expected. “How did you know about the rope?”

If she had been any other person he’d met just thirty minutes ago, he would have been horrified, but he’d assessed instantly that she was sharp, and he’d suspected she didn’t miss the glance from Scanlon to Mason as she spoke about the rope.

He started the engine, glancing back and forth from her to the road. “I’ve dabbled.”

“Dabbled?”

“Yeah.” He gave her another partial grin.

“I might need you to elaborate if we’re going to go into a club together pretending to be a couple.”

His smile widened. “Don’t worry. I’ll fill you in.”

Her brows lifted. “I’m listening.”

“You want to talk about Cindy LaFleur first, since we’re headed to her apartment?”

“Nope. I get the gist of that.”

He shook his head, smirking. Not shocked at all. “How much do you know about BDSM?”

“You have to ask?”

Another grin. Since when did he smile on the job? Since when did he smile while working a homicide case? “Good point.”

“The question is, how much do you know, and how are you going to pass me off as anything but a novice?”

“Easy. I’m not. We don’t have to. I can take you in as a newbie and show you the ropes.”

Now she laughed, and he loved the sound. Shit. “Pun intended.”

He shot her another grin. “Unintentional, I swear. Wish I could take credit for that one, but I’m not that witty.”

She sobered. “So your plan is to bring me to the club as a guest with no experience?”

“Yep.” He slowed to a stop at a red light and looked at her again. “Trust me. No one will doubt the authenticity if we do it that way.”

“Uh-huh. I’m not at all sure I like this plan.”

The visit to the club proves their is a definite chemistry between them, but Nicole doesn’t stay with anyone. No one needs to know about her nightmares. Nightmares that have been escalating since she saw a woman in a cage at the Club.

Another murder and a lead that the victims met the killer at a dog park. This will require Nicole take a dog to the park in an attempt to lure him out. Mason helps her acclimate with one of his dogs to accomplish this part of the investigation. He also witnesses her having a nightmare and when she insists on returning to her hotel she admits the reason to be his seeing all her weaknesses.

Love the slow build to the relationship and the build up is sensual and emotional.

With fast paced suspense, plenty of emotion and the simmer to sizzle relationship, you won’t be able to put this one down.
