Sometimes a journey of the heart is the most dangerous journey of all.

Sally Wheeler learned the hard way that men aren’t always what they seem. Now she will stop at nothing to track down the bigamist husband who stole her son and abandoned her and their daughter on their failing Kansas farm. She’ll do anything to have her family back together, even if it means traveling down the Old Chisholm Trail to Texas with an old mule skinner and a handsome maverick who could change her mind about men.

Free after spending seven years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, Rob Truman aims to balance the scales of justice on the man who sent him there-Luke Wheeler. His quest doesn’t include falling for the one woman who will lead him to his quarry, but Sally’s courage in the face of her fear touches his soul.

Through dangerous days and nights on the trail, neither Sally nor Rob can ignore their growing feelings for each other. Yet both are haunted by the poor judgment that, in the past, led them down the wrong road. Love-and trust-are luxuries neither of them can afford. But as the bullets start flying, love may be all that saves them-and Sally’s son.

Warning: This title contains ornery mules and ornery men.

I don’t read very many historical romances, but this one is old west and I couldn’t resist.

Sally’s husband Jake has taken their son and left for Texas. She is determined to get her son back and to accomplish that goal she seeks the aid of Ozzie Moss, the man who led her family to Kansas to begin with. She really doesn’t give him a choice and packs up her daughter Caroline and herself for the journey.

Rob Truman is searching for Jake to get revenge for having spent five years of his life in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. He’s following Sally and Ozzie to reach his goal. At least that was the plan until Sally breaks the axel on the wagon.

With Ozzie scouting ahead, Rob comes to Sally’s aid, although he couldn’t do anything about the axel he was able to get her started with repacking things to take along.

The weather takes a turn for the worse and Caroline falls ill.

This is a favorite scene.

The tree he was leaning against felt cold and hard, and all his muscles ached from sleeping in that position. He looked down at Sally as she slept. Her head still rested on his shoulder. His elbow seemed to have lost all feeling.

Carolyn snuggled into her blankets with only her nose peeking out. Sally sighed in her sleep.

The gentler sex, the ones men were raised to protect.

In sleep Sally bore the same innocence as her child.

So this must be how it feels to have a family. Waking to this every morning. Feeling a responsibility to care for them.

The strange feeling in his throat made him swallow.

It was enough to choke a man. And all from watching them sleep. Appearances were deceiving.

He thought back to the night he’d asked May Belle to marry him. He’d wanted to spend the rest of his life caring for her. Not a mistake he would make again.

He needed to get up. He moved his arm and Sally relaxed, sinking deeper into his shoulder. He cleared his throat.

Sally slept on.

“Sally?”

She leaned into him, but still she didn’t wake. Uncomfortably warm and aroused, he shifted his leg to ease the pressure.

Moss was awake and must have noticed his discomfort. He shook Sally.

“Ye goin’ to sleep all day?”

He frowned at Rob. Rob stared back. A man couldn’t help his reaction, could he? It wasn’t as if he wanted to be attracted to her. His body wasn’t listening. And as for his heart, he would never allow it to be hurt the way May Belle had wounded him.

Sally stretched, and then opened her eyes to look into Rob’s. Overwhelmed by his nearness, she sat up with a gasp. Her heart pounded an erratic rhythm, and she was aware of warm arousal throughout her body. A tumble of confused thoughts and feelings assailed her.

She watched Rob in confusion. How wonderful it felt waking up next to him. Long ago she’d missed waking to the warmth of Luke’s body, before she learned what a harsh man he was.

Sally clenched her fists.

All those nights together, the things he’d done and they hadn’t even been married.
Debra Parmley. A Desperate Journey (Kindle Locations 1431-1451). Belo Dia Publishing.

Illness, Indians, high flowing rivers, all contribute to this harrowing journey, but the presence of Rob also lends comfort as she fights her growing attraction. This attraction is mutual since Rob knows she really isn’t married to Luke.

Plenty of tense situations, some action and some heat in this fast paced book you won’t be able to put down.

Love had never worked out for US Navy SEAL Commander Eric Lopez during his twenty-five years of active duty. Now, with a forced medical retirement, he was bored…and still alone. When asked to work for a DHS Secret Division Command, he jumped at the chance.

Dr. Lydia Hughes, a veterinarian at the new National Bio and Agro-defense Facility in Kansas, had been a widow for years. She spent more time with the animals she was in charge of than looking for a man. Meeting Eric knocked her on her ass…literally.

A contingency of foreign scientists and journalists will be visiting the facility and the cyber security chatter is that someone there will be threatening the facility.

Her workplace is embroiled in controversy and with his background in biology, Eric is the perfect choice to go in to assess the situation as part of the foreign delegation, never expecting to fall for a beautiful veterinarian.

Lydia takes a chance on love again with a man she thinks is a journalist. But, just her luck, she ends up in the hands of kidnappers who have mistaken her for a lead scientist.

Eric pulls together a team and they race to find Lydia before the kidnappers discover they have the wrong person and dispose of her. Saving her life is his mission. Falling for the beautiful doctor became the unexpected reward.

**Scenes in the book are similar to what you would find in an “R” rated movie. Intended for readers 18+.**

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogo

One of things I really liked about this book is that Erick Lopez didn’t have to change his name for his mission. He portrays himself as a journalist so he really didn’t have to lie to very much to Lydia as they got to know each other.

While the way Lydia and Eric meet was oh so very good, their second meeting was the one that I loved more.

This was a favorite scene.

He watched as the tall, dark-haired veterinarian walked forward, an easy manner about him. Calling for the group to follow him, the affable young man turned and led them down the hall he had come from. “Nice to meet you, Dr. Hughes,” Eric said, as they fell in step, the other journalists right behind.

“Oh, I’m not Dr. Hughes. I’m Jim, Dr. Hughes’ intern. I was called to escort you to our work area. We are down a person today, so Dr. Hughes is incredibly busy.” As though concerned his words had sounded unfriendly, Jim rushed to add, “You’re really lucky to have the chance to meet her. She’s an excellent veterinarian and dedicated this organization. She’s very knowledgeable about porcine.”

“Young and fresh out of veterinary medical school?” Egor asked, an edge to his harsh voice.

Eric caught the disdain in Egor’s question and glanced to the side to see what Jim’s response would be.

Jim’s eyes narrowed, as he replied, “Dr. Hughes is not fresh out of veterinary school. She practiced in the field for a number of years before joining the NBAF.”

As they walked down the hall, Jim’s voice lowered just for Eric’s ears. “If he acts like a jackass around her, I might be tempted to take him out behind the woodshed.”

Eric held back his grin, but admired Jim’s loyalty. “Have you worked with her long?”

“No, she came on board when the facility opened, and I’ve only been her intern for about two months. I wasn’t kidding when I said she was a good veterinarian, but she’s also just a really nice person. She was widowed years ago and raised her daughter, who’s now in college, on her own, all while finishing her degrees. She’s one of those people who can handle whatever is thrown at her. We were just told a couple of days ago that she would be working with you guys, but she jumped in, ready to do her part.”

They moved through several sets of doors, down long halls twisting and turning as they approached the back side of the facility. Jim raised his voice to address the whole group as he said, “We have a number of veterinarians on staff to take care of the animals that we have here. It’s my understanding that your focus on our facility is specifically dealing with the outbreak of African Swine Fever. You’ll be spending the next day with the pigs.” With that introduction, Jim pushed through the next set of doors and the group walked in.

Finding himself standing in a large room housing multiple pens, Eric jolted at the sudden cacophony of pigs grunting and squealing, as well as the odor of straw, dirt, feed, and only a hint of fecal matter. A woman wearing navy scrubs, with her feet jammed in muddy, rubber boots, was standing with her back to them, a hose in her hand as she filled a water trough.

Eric was further shocked at the size of the pigs in the pen that she was in. Jesus, I thought they were little piglets. A large pig bumped into the woman, and her feet slipped on the wet floor. Too far away to assist, he watched as she fell to her ass. Scrambling, she jumped up, planted her hands on her now wet hips. Looking down, she fussed at the pig.

“Dr. Hughes!” Jim yelled.

The woman looked up, and he was surprised yet again, even more so than from the sound and the smells in the room. The woman whose ass was now covered in wet mud, was none other than his Lydia. The instant her gaze landed on him, her smile dropped from her face, and her eyes widened in shock. He started to smile, but her eyes quickly narrowed, and she glared.

What the fuck?
Maryann Jordan. SEAL Together – ARC copy: Silver SEALs (Kindle Locations 868-895).

Indeed Eric has some explaining to do he just doesn’t know why. I loved the interaction between them as Eric collects the information he needs for NSA. His information specialist Chris had me giggling more than once.

It was also fun to see folks from other Maryann Jordan books, Mace and Rank from Lighthouse Security, Bart from Saints Protection and even Logan from Sleeper SEALs become part of Eric’s team in the pursuit of the bad guys.

Plenty of intrigue, action and heat surround this story, making it my favorite so far.

I can’t wait to read the next one.

I have always been an avid reader. My early memories were of my mother taking me to the library and allowing me to check out as many books as I could carry. My favorite books were checked out numerous times and read over and over. I would use my Barbie dolls to play out the scenes in books (such as Nancy Drew!).

I have written as a hobby for many years (probably since childhood). I have written devotionals, autobiographical writings about having a severely handicapped, medically fragile child, about my mother’s Alzheimer’s, and other subjects that interest me.

I joke that I “cut my romance teeth” on the old historical romance books. In 2013, I started a blog to showcase wonderful writers. In 2014, I finally gave in to the characters in my head pleading for their story to be told. Thus, Emma’s Home was created.

I worked as a counselor in a high school and was involved in education for the past 30 years, until retiring in 2015. I have been married to a wonderfully patient man for 35 years and have 2 adult, very supportive daughters. When writing, my dog or one of my cats will usually be found in my lap!

Owen Shaw and his “brothers” lost everything, their entire existence erased. Science had robbed he and all the Lost Boys of their memories and their past, but not their future. Hunted by every intelligence agency in the world, they are focused on two goals: find a cure for what was done to them and ensure that the technology that ruined their lives doesn’t get out into the world. Rebecca Walsh might be the key to achieving both. Owen has been studying her closely, living in her building, and he cannot resolve how such a beautiful, giving woman could have helped design the evil process that destroyed his past.

Dr. Rebecca Walsh has dedicated her life to researching the secrets of the mind. Her atmospheric rise in her field was fueled by the horror of watching her mother’s agonizing journey into madness at the hands of a disease with no cure. She vowed to never rest until she finds it. But obsession takes a heavy toll, and when Owen moves into her building she realizes how much of her life she has missed out on. Owen opens her eyes to a whole new world, filled with joy, laughter, and possibly love.

As the sinister forces working against the Lost Boys descend on Toronto, secrets long buried are uncovered that could shatter the bonds holding the Lost Boys together and cost Rebecca her life.

Once again I am starting not at the first book, I somehow missed the first in this series. I remember all these guys from Masters and Mercenaries and I am so glad they are getting their own books. I will be going back to read the one I missed!

In this one Dr. Rebecca Walsh is the subject of their investigation. They found she had spent time working with the very evil and demented Dr. Hope McDonald, who had done all the damage to these men.

The plan was for Owen and Robert to go in as a married couple and befriend Becca, only fate has a way of stepping in and screwing things up.

It’s been two years since Becca’s divorce and she’s finally considering dating again. Her assistant Cathy, has been wanting to set her up for the longest time and is ready to jump on this.

When the ancient elevator gets stuck with the her and Owen, they end up getting to know each other in more than one way. Nothing like elevator sex to kickstart a relationship.

Plenty of intrigue as ‘Mr. Green’ shows up, once again with his own agenda. Turning the tables on Becca’s boss, who not only wants her research but also the entire company.

Nothing is ever easy and this is no different, I couldn’t put this book down as the guys follow the trail and figure out who’s the criminal in all this. Plenty of heat, some laughs, some nail-biting and I sniffled a bit too.

Definitely going back to read book one, I’ve already started a re-read of Masters and Mercenaries from the beginning as well.

Real heroes aren’t born, they’re made

But when she discovers a wounded soldier of fortune during a Search and Protect mission, she has no choice but to get him to safety. The last time she and the roguish, sexy Jason Landon tangled, they were on opposite sides of the conflict, but this time, he’s claiming to need her help.

When Jason wakes up in a hospital on Hawaii’s Big Island, he’s shocked to discover Arin guarding him. She’s the last person he expected to see, but she’s also the only person who can help him bring down a kidnapping ring. As they draw closer to danger-and to each other-they must race against the clock to discover who the kidnappers are working for, or risk becoming collateral damage themselves.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

One of the things I really love about this series is the working dogs. So many people have no idea how very important they are.

In this book we get to know Arin and her dog King, as they and the rest of the team take on the issue of human trafficking. We open with the team looking for people who have been enslaved to work on a plantation that was once used for that purpose. They had taken down one kingpin but another was moving in. Arin finds an unconscious man that she recognizes from when they rescued her sister and her team of scientists from this location.

Jason Landon quit his job after realizing what the company he was working for was protecting. He didn’t want to be part of anything illegal. He had been left for dead on the property when Arin and King find him.

Jason and Arin become a team of sorts, even King likes him. There’s an attraction there as well but trust isn’t easy for Arin. Which makes it a difficult road for them.

An action-packed, suspenseful, emotional read with some heat.

I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

Forge and Fire – The Replacement Book 1 By Ripley Proserpina

Forge and Fire
The Replacement Book 1
By
Ripley Proserpina

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Sticks and stones and moss and leaves… that’s what Tatiana is made of.

Tatiana is a replacement—an exchanged child—created to take the place of a perfect human baby and left in a cradle on a cold, winter night.

But twenty years later, her time is running out. The creature who made Tatiana returns and challenges everything she knows. Not only is Tatiana not human, and her family not her family, but the human world is killing her.

Determined to give her family the life—and daughter—they deserve, Tatiana journeys to a strange world, one of fire and dust, and concrete and glass. There, she’ll risk everything to find the human girl she replaced, and make things right.

But she won’t be alone. Grisha, a roamer, and Fedir, a mysterious shifter, find her and vow to help her.

And they aren’t the only ones.

Soon, Shubin, Taras, and Kopala, are caught up in Tatiana’s quest. Fascinated by this exchanged girl, the five otherworldly creatures will put their trust in her.

But hope is a fragile thing, and Tatiana’s been burned before. Will she come to believe she’s finally found a place to belong?

**Forge and Fire is a slow burn reverse harem romance**

I love the world Ripley has created for this series. The past is the beginning as the rusalka looks at the human child and desires to keep her.

Almost twenty years later the story continues as Tatiana with her mother finds she has little time to live and there is no possible cure. It’s once her father, brother and grandmother (Babusya) show up that she finds out exactly what she is.

Her Babusya lets her know in a rather brutal way and the rusalka had to come to the human world to save her. A replacement, Tatiana shouldn’t have lived beyond a few days after the exchange. However the rusalka was followed and this is when Tatiana is offered a choice.

This is one of my favorite scenes.

“Why are you here?” Tatiana asked, ignoring the fact that yet another person had pointed out her short life span.

“I saw a rusalka. And I’m a curious guy.”

“You followed her here.”

“Yes.” He shifted, moving gracefully from the floor to the bed. “Here. I can’t stay much longer, but when I saw you, I realized I had to offer you the choice.”

Tatiana stared at him in confusion. “I understand the individual words leaving your mouth, but the way you string them together makes no sense.” He laughed again, the dull light from the one lamp left in her room turning his hair the color of a summer sunset. Leaning over, he knocked her gently with his shoulder. “As a feia, you have a right to live in Korolevstvo. I’ll take you.”

“Again. No idea what you’re talking about.”

One side of Grisha’s mouth lifted in a half-smile, but it didn’t touch his eyes. “You don’t have much time left. Korolevstvo is our home. The place where people like you and me come from. You’re not meant to live here, surrounded by iron.” He let out a breath and grimaced. “It’s in the air from a hundred and fifty years of smelting. No wonder you are sick.”

Tatiana studied him. His eyes were compassionate, and he didn’t say a word as she trailed her gaze over his features and clothing, down to his shoes. “What is feia?” she asked again.

Grisha sighed. “It’s impossible to describe us, because we are everything.” His smile this time was a little wicked and had Tatiana wishing her bedroom had two doors. “It’s much easier to show you what feia are.”

Talking to Grisha was like talking in circles and riddles. He made no sense. But then again, nothing in her life made sense right now. She wanted to disbelieve him. He had to be crazy.

Except he had the same explanation as Babusya. They used the same words: exchanged child, changeling.

“I don’t trust you.”

“Nor should you!” He adjusted his position, pausing before he perched on the bed. “May I?”

She waved her hand. “Go ahead.”

“There aren’t many like you, but seeing the rusalka has piqued my curiosity. I can’t help wondering, who did you replace? Is your human counterpart alive? Hidden in Korolevstvo?” He glanced out the window and ran his fingers down his face. It made a rough sound and Tatiana found herself studying Grisha closer.

“You have stubble.” She almost lifted her hand to touch him.

He grinned. “Yes. Even if I am different, I am still male. We— most of us— grow hair on our bodies. Some of us more than others.”

“Like Bigfoot?”

“You’re trying to trick me.” He seemed to enjoy her joke. Actually, he seemed to enjoy everything she did, if his grin was anything to go by. Tatiana relaxed into her pillows. She should have been much more worried than she was, but Grisha put her at ease. “Trickery is a feia trait. I hope you’ll come to believe what I tell you. It will be the only thing to save your life.”

It may have been crazy, but Tatiana was starting to believe him. Babusya was one thing, but for Grisha to arrive so closely on the heels of her revelation…

And of course, there was the rusalka.

Was that creature her true mother? If what she said was true, she’d fashioned Tatiana and breathed life into her form. But she loved her family. Those feelings were real, weren’t they?

“Am I not real?” she asked.

Rather than put her at ease, Grisha merely shrugged. “As real as me.”

“My family is here. My mother, father, brother.” She clenched her teeth together before uttering, “And my babusya.”

“They’re not really your family,” he said, not unkindly. “They have a daughter, and she is not you.”

“Do you think she’s still alive?”

“The real you?” he asked.

Ouch. “I’m the real me,” she countered, but… “Yeah. Her.”

“Maybe, if the rusalka didn’t lose interest in the child as she got older. She came here when you were in distress, so she does have some maternal instincts.” Grisha pushed off the bed. “I don’t know how you stand it. I’m getting sick to my stomach. Are you coming or not?”

How could she leave her family? Even if they weren’t her family by birth, they were certainly the family of her heart. And it would destroy them if she just disappeared.

“Thank you, Grisha,” she said. “I can’t go with you.”

He narrowed his eyes, face wiped clean of the smile she’d gotten used to. “You’ll die here.”

She couldn’t shrug like it wouldn’t matter, but her family was more important to her than anything. And no one could tell her for sure she wouldn’t survive. She’d made it this long, hadn’t she? Grisha waited, but Tatiana could see that his skin had lost some of its glow, and between his statement and her silence, his eyes had become sunken.

“I can’t.”

As if he couldn’t wait another moment, he stood. The wind blew outside her window and he turned toward it. He tilted his head, listening, before he faced her again. “Good luck to you, exchanged girl.”

“You scared the crap out of me Grisha, but it’s been interesting. Thanks for not murdering me.”

His eyes lit up, and he laughed, but sobered quickly. “It is a waste for you to stay here.”
Ripley Proserpina. Forge and Fire: The Replacement Book 1 (Kindle Locations 455-458).

Grisha is only the first feia to make an appearance on this very strange night. For Tatiana the second one from Fedir helps her to decide on a path to bring the human Tatiana back where she belongs.

Korolevstvo is a strange and alive world, filled with many dangers and it also seemed to be poisoned. I loved the way Tatiana meets the rest of her guys Kopala, Shubin and Taras. Each of them does something to help and protect her.

Plenty of action, as we get to know this world and the feia that inhabit it. As they decide to stay together there are other problems to resolve.

I can’t wait to see this relationship grow and what other things they will face in the next book.

Summer’s Wolf – The Westervelt Wolves Book 2 by Rebecca Royce

Summer’s Wolf
The Westervelt Wolves Book 2
By
Award Winning Author
Rebecca Royce

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Three years ago, Summer Morrison’s happy, normal life was thrown into upheaval. Forced to discover, before she was ready, that she was half-wolf shifter and mated to the pack’s enforcer has left Summer moody, shaken, and resentful. When tragedy strikes her family, Summer is forced to come back to the world of the Westervelt Wolves…and into the arms of Cullen Murphy.

Cullen has waited three years for Summer, having promised her mother he would give her time to grow up. But he’s never forgotten his mate and craved her presence since he first saw her on the battlefield three years earlier. The trouble is, now that Cullen has Summer, he has no idea what to do with her. Three hundred years of being alone has left Cullen socially inept and more lonesome than he would ever admit. He lives with the guilt and shame of his deeds, while knowing his role is pivotal to the pack’s survival.

Together, Cullen and Summer will heal each other’s wounds and discover that life is worth living as long as they are together. Now there’s just the little matter of Kendrick and Claudius, their evil henchmen, the army of miscreant wolves, and the demons that keep attacking. If they can survive, their love will be everlasting. But failure will mean not only their destruction, but the end of the Westervelt Wolves.

When love is eternal, failure is not an option.

Holy moly this book starts off with a bang, and tears! It’s been three years since Summer went through the change and she refuses to acknowledge her wolf. She’s been trying to build a career as a singer instead of returning to college. Now her world is turning upside down again.

Cullen is her mate, she knows it and is both angry and upset that he hasn’t come for her. She has decided he doesn’t want her.

Cullen is an assassin, he has been respecting Summer’s mother, Victoria’s wishes for him to wait until she is twenty-five before courting and mating her.

It is not a happy time when these two meet up and they end up fleeing to Maine together.

This is a favorite scene after Summer has an argument with her sister Ashlee.

A tap on his door stilled his fingers from the guitar strings. Cullen frowned. People never visited him. He stood from his seat on the floor, placed his guitar gently on the couch and crossed the room to the entrance. He sniffed the air. The aroma of peaches and baby oil assailed his nose. Summer. As the delicious odor made the hair on his arms stand up, he tried not to groan.

She didn’t speak, just looked up at him. Dark smudges stained the skin beneath her eyes, her teeth chattered. He pulled her into the cabin, as he made note of the fact she was barefoot and wore only the shorts and tee-shirt Gabriel had inappropriately packed for her.

“What are you doing out here? You don’t have a coat or shoes.” He shut the door behind her and loosened his grip on her arm.

Her teeth rattled and she crossed her arms over her chest. “I couldn’t stay with Ashlee. I’ll leave in the morning, find somewhere else to live off of this rock you call an island, but do you think I could sleep on your floor tonight?”

His mind whirled. He found it almost impossible to concentrate on what she said when she stood in front of him so obviously freezing. Goosebumps covered her skin and her nipples were hard and visible through her thin tee-shirt. He forced his gaze from the tantalizing view and made himself focus on the fact she was cold. He crossed to the couch and picked up a wool blanket. He wrapped her up in it, nearly coming out of his skin when his fingers brushed the flesh of her arm.

She stared up in his eyes and he shivered, but not from the cold. Having her there, in his cabin, made him feel mashed up inside. Her scent permeated the room, filling his head until he couldn’t breathe properly. He had the strangest urge to pick her up and rub her against the curtains, the bed, an the rug, so he could find her scent whenever he wanted to.

“So, is it okay, or not?” She continued to stare at him.

He realized she’d asked him a question and he hadn’t answered it. She’d come to his home, through the freezing cold, wearing almost nothing, completely barefoot. Why did Ashlee let her leave this way?

“No, it’s not okay.”

Her eyes widened. “Oh, then I’ll go.” She tried to turn but his arms held her steady, wrapped in the blanket.

“What are you talking about? Go where?” When another shiver wracked her slight body, electricity traveled up his arms.

“I asked you if I could stay tonight and you just said no.”

“I’m sorry, Summer.” I felt like a prayer, the way her name passed over his lips. “I seem to be having a conversation all by myself, in my won mind, and you can’t hear it. Of course you can stay, Here,” Cullen picked her up in his arms.

He felt very gallant, not a sensation he was used to. It actually made him grin for a moment before he stopped himself. Summer didn’t need to see him beaming like an idiot. He placed her down on the couch and tucked the blanket around her.

“I’m going to get you some warmer clothes. It’s drafty in here.” He walked into the bedroom and noticed his unmade bed. After he made her something to eat, he would clean up in here. She could spend he night in his room.
Royce, Rebecca. Summer’s Wolf (The Westervelt Wolves Book 2) (Kindle Locations 525-551). Rebecca Royce. Kindle Edition.

Cullen has many conversations with himself and with his wolf while also talking to her. He really has some issues with that which make it very amusing.

There are however many things that suddenly go wrong. Things that will have you holding your breath, crying and turning the pages.

Summer and her wolf come to terms under stressful situations as Triston and the rest of the pack come to try and solve the problems of their old Alpha.

Problems that include Claudius, demons with acid secreting hands, vicious wolves and so many other twists, turns and surprises.

I can’t wait to start the next book in this series.

As a teenager, I would hide in my room to read my favorite romance novels when I was supposed to be doing my homework. I hope, these days, that my parents think it was worth it.

I am the mother of three adorable boys and I am fortunate to be married to my best friend. I live in Austin Texas where I am determined to eat all the barbecue in town.

I am in love with science fiction, fantasy, and the paranormal and try to use all of these elements in my writing. I’ve been told I’m a little bloodthirsty so I hope that when you read my work you’ll enjoy the action packed ride that always ends in romance. I love to write series because I love to see characters develop over time and it always makes me happy to see my favorite characters make guest appearances in other books.

A routine mission…

Sean Taggart is hunting a deadly terrorist, and his only lead is the lovely Grace Hawthorne. She’s the executive assistant for an employment agency Sean suspects is a front for illegal activities. To get the truth, he is going to have to get very close to Grace, a task he is all too eager to undertake when he discovers her deliciously submissive nature.

…turns into a dangerous seduction.

Soon, Grace Hawthorne is living a double life. By day, she is the widowed mother of two college-aged sons. By night, she submits to Sean’s every dark desire. She’s living out her wildest fantasies of pleasure—intimate acts of trust she’s only read about. As passion engulfs her, a murderer strikes, and Grace learns that Sean has a deeply hidden agenda. Will Sean choose his mission and break her heart or be the Master of her dreams?

I have this as the Masters and Mercenaries Collection: The Early Years, which is the first 5 books. I am going to review them individually.

Sean Taggart works for McKay/Taggart a Security firm that also handles some things borderline stuff for the government. A former Green Beret he and two of his former team are hunting down a terrorist.

Grace Hamilton is the administrative assistant for Matt Wright, he runs an employment agency that mostly handles IT contracts. Recently her boss has also started with some janitorial contracts that are handled by Evan Parnell. Grace doesn’t care for the man, and has as little contact with him as possible.

Undercover as a possible client, Sean quickly discovers there is something special about Grace. She’s older than him but he doesn’t care, he has decided to get to know her and when this investigation is over he hopes to win her heart.

This is a favorite scene as Sean begins to convince her of his worthiness.

Grace waved off his words with the hand Adam wasn’t holding. “He’s a man after a good deal. I think he’s figured out the way to the boss’s heart is through his admin.”

“Then why was Kayla playing admin today?” Adam asked.

That had been her solution. Kayla had been more than amenable. Sean had told her that he required someone to take notes and type them up so he would have a hard copy of all the meeting’s high points. Grace had given him Kayla, who was more than happy to stare at the gorgeous man all day long. Grace had beaten a hasty retreat, holing up in the supply closet doing an inventory that wasn’t really due for another two weeks and that should have been handled by someone else.

She’d run like the coward she was, and she wasn’t ashamed. “I had some other things to do. Kayla didn’t mind.”

Adam chuckled a bit. “Give him hell, sweetheart. Don’t you let that big bastard charm you. I know the type.”

“Really?” Jake asked, staring pointedly at Adam.

“I do. He looks like the ‘love ’em and leave ’em’ type. He’s not right for our Grace.” Adam’s hand stroked across hers sweetly. “Grace needs someone different. She needs someone who’s in it for the long haul.”

A long shadow fell over the table. “What are we hauling? Dare I take a wild guess?”

Grace pulled her hand back from Adam’s. Sean stood at the head of their table, his jacket held over one shoulder. Like Jake, he’d ditched the tie and looked gorgeous and casual. He stared down at Adam, a fierce frown on his face.

Adam sat back. If he was intimidated by Sean’s caveman act, he wasn’t showing it. “I was telling my dear friend here how she has to watch out for men who would take advantage of her.”

“Yes, she should be careful of that. She’s a beautiful woman. There are a lot of liars out there. There are a lot of men who would misrepresent themselves in order to get close to a woman like Grace.”

Grace looked between Adam and Sean, trying to figure out the weird tension between the two of them. “Do you two know each other?”

Sean’s face changed in an instant. His smile grew wide, and he ignored Adam. He laid his jacket over the back of the booth and held out his hand. “Not at all, sweetheart. I’m simply jealous that you avoided me all day, but you seek him out. Dance with me, Grace.”

She actually felt her heart speed up. O’Hagen’s had a small dance floor, but despite the music playing, almost no one ever used it. The song had switched from a bouncy pop tune to a slow, sexy ballad. No one danced to music like this. This was the type of music a man used as an excuse to plaster himself all over a lover in public. “Oh, I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

His jaw hardened, and his voice was deeper as he spoke to her. “Grace, it would please me greatly if you would dance with me.”

He knew exactly what to say to her. She started to slide out of the bench. Sean took her hand and helped her out. She stood, and he was standing so close she could feel the heat from his body. She had to tilt her head up to see his face.

“Thank you, Grace.” His voice seemed deeper. His lips quirked up in a sexy half-smile. “I’m not so bad, you know. You don’t have to hide in a closet to avoid me.”

She felt herself flush. She’d hoped he hadn’t figured that out. “I had to do inventory.”

His eyes narrowed, and she felt like he could see through her. “I would prefer honesty, Grace, but I don’t suppose we’re there yet. Fine. I can play the game for a while.” He looked down at Jake. “When the waitress comes by, could you order me a beer?”

Grace barely heard Jake’s “yes” before Sean was leading her toward the dance floor. Her hand felt small engulfed in his large one. God, he made her feel petite, and she wasn’t small in any way. Grace glanced around the bar. No one else was dancing. Everyone was going to be watching the big girl and the guy who was obviously out of her league.

Sean halted in the middle of the floor and pulled her close. “Stop it.”

“Stop what?” She was doing as he asked. The trouble was she wasn’t a very good dancer. “If you would prefer prefer someone who knows what they’re doing, please feel free to choose another partner.”

She started to pull away, her face flaming. She should have known better. Sean’s arm tightened around her waist, pulling them closer together. “That wasn’t what I meant. I meant for you to stop stressing about what everyone else thinks.”

“How did you know?” she asked, trying to follow his lead. It was obvious she wasn’t leaving anytime soon.

His arm relaxed as though he understood she was resigned. His hand found the small of her back, and she could feel him leading her gently. “I watched you. Your shoulders come up when you get stressed or nervous. And your jaw locks when you lie.”

“I didn’t lie.”

“You said you didn’t want to dance with me. That was a lie. I saw the way your eyes flared and your jaw clenched when I asked you. You were looking at me the same way you looked at that decadent piece of chocolate cake at the restaurant, and you turned me down the same way you turned down dessert yesterday.”

He was right about that. She was horrifically embarrassed that he could see through her so plainly, but there was a part of her that was amazed he’d learned so much about her. Her husband, God rest his soul, had never figured out those things. “Well, I think you’re both bad for me.”

He surprised her by laughing, the sound as rich as any chocolate. Yep, he was bad for her. He had her thinking all kinds of dirty things. “That is such bullshit, Grace. Everyone needs a little decadence. It makes life worth living.”
Blake, Lexi. Masters and Mercenaries Bundle: The Early Ops (Books 1-5) . DLZ Entertainment, LLC. Kindle Locations (652-694). Kindle Edition.

Sean interrupts her skinny dipping when he decides to take her up on her offer of a home cooked meal after a dinner meeting with her boss. Things started melting my kindle here.

All is not fun and games though as the stakes get higher. Plenty of action, suspense and emotional drama as they get closer to solving this case.

I just keep turning the pages, I’m so glad I have the collection so I don’t have to download the next book!

Former Navy SEAL enters the fight of his life
to protect the mother of his child from killers
who wish to silence her testimony in a murder case

After the sudden disappearance of the amazing woman he fell for on vacation in Cozumel and nearly losing his own life on a politically volatile mission in Syria, Brandon Rayne “Boomer” leaves the SEAL brotherhood and signs on with the private security agency Brotherhood Protectors in Montana. Determined to forget the girl and maybe even try for a real life and start a family, he embraces his new life.

While on vacation in Cozumel, Daphne Miller fell in love with a handsome SEAL. On the verge of committing her heart and life to him, she becomes the unwitting witness to murder. Forced into witness protection, she doesn’t realize she’s pregnant, the product of the hot fling with the sexy SEAL. A year later, still pining for what could have been, with a baby girl to protect, Daphne’s safe house is compromised. In an attempt to evade the people trying to kill her to keep her from being a star witness in a big court case, she heads to Montana to find the only person she knows can help, the baby’s father.

Determined to put his desire for Daphne on the back burner, Boomer focuses his skills and cunning on keeping her alive long enough to testify. Together, they vow to protect baby Maya from being used as a pawn to control the outcome of a critical court case.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

Daphne was on her ‘honeymoon’ alone, her fiancé had died before the wedding but she had made the promise to go. She met Boomer when she was crying her heart out and they quickly became friends. Things were fun with someone to share experiences with and those fun days turned to steamy nights as well. It was her last night when she slipped from his bed not wanting to say good-byes that she witnessed a murder. Chuck saved her from being discovered by the killer taking her into protective custody to save her life.

Boomer now works for Brotherhood Protectors, his first assignment is to help in the protection of a woman and her child. The other person protecting her, Chuck, was also a SEAL but works for some undisclosed agency. The thing Boomer doesn’t know is that the child is his.

This is a favorite scene as they settle into the safe house, and Daphne corners him as he gets the generator started.

“Boomer,” Daphne touched his shoulder. “We need to talk.”

He shrugged off her hand and straightened. “We have nothing to talk about.” He stared into her gaze, briefly, and then bent to grab the cord’s pull handle.

He pulled so hard he broke the handle off the cord, and still the engine wouldn’t start.

Daphne crossed her arms over her chest and raised her eyebrows. “I get the feeling you’re angry with me.”

“I’m not angry,” he denied, though his response sounded terse, even to his own ears.

Her eyes narrowed. “What I don’t understand is why you’re mad at me.”

He threw the handle on deck. “I know why you left Cozumel. I know you didn’t have a choice. I know what happened. You don’t have to give me the detailed explanation. I get it. Just don’t expect me to be happy about it.”

Her brows rose higher. “You know?”

“I know.” He bent to retrieve the handle, tied it back to the cord and yanked with a little less force. The engine turned over, chugged a couple of times and then roared to life.

Over the roar of the motor, Boomer heard Daphne’s words, “Then you don’t want anything to do with your baby girl?”

Boomer’s pulse raced, his stomach clenched and the snow swirling around his head made him strangely dizzy to the point he thought he was hearing things that couldn’t be possible. “What did you say?”

She shook her head, her brows furrowing. “It’s okay. I don’t expect anything from you. What we had in Cozumel was a fling. Neither one of us had any expectations. We didn’t discuss life after the island. We certainly didn’t discuss children. Maya and I can make it on our own once this murder thing is cleared up.” Daphne spun toward the door, her eyes glistening. “I’ve done my part. At least, now you know.”

Boomer grabbed her arm and yanked her back around. “Woman, what are you talking about?” He bent and switched the generator off. The engine rumbled to a stop, leaving nothing but the wind howling through the trees for noise.

“You heard me,” Daphne said. A tear rolled down her cheek. She reached up to swipe it away. “You had the right to know. Now that you do, I don’t expect anything from you. Maya is my responsibility. She and I will be fine.”

Boomer shook his head, his eyes narrowing. “Back it up about four paragraphs.”

Her brows dipped. “Why?”

“I want to be sure I’m hearing this right. You said your baby girl.”

She nodded. “I did. Again, you don’t have to do a thing. I’m perfectly capable of raising our daughter on my own. I don’t need your help.”

“Our daughter?” Boomer felt as if he’d been punched in the gut. “As in yours and mine.” He touched a finger to her chest and then to his. “Not yours and Chuck’s?”

She looked at him as if he’d grown a set of horns. “What are you talking about? Maya is your daughter, not Chuck’s.”

Boomer’s head spun. Maya was his child? The baby in the chalet was his flesh and blood?

Daphne’s brows dipped lower and then raised into her hairline. “You thought Chuck and I…that Maya is Chuck’s daughter?” She laughed, the sound strained and tight.

Boomer stood straight, unable to move, not a single word coming to his lips. The truth swirled around him like a tornado, sucking the air from his lungs.

“Do you think I would hop from your bed into Chuck’s so quickly?” Daphne pushed away from him. “You bastard.” She yanked her arm free of his grip and stepped back. “I thought we had something going on in Cozumel. That we had a special connection.” She snorted. “I guess it was only on my side. I was just another girl in a sailor’s port.” Another tear slipped from the corner of her eye. She swiped it away and squared her shoulders. “Well, to hell with you. You had the right to know you have a child, but now that you do, you can stay the hell away from both of us. That suits you, doesn’t it? Maya and I would hate to cramp your lifestyle.” She marched toward the door.

Before she could reach for the handle, Boomer jerked her around and slammed her against his chest. “You were not just another woman in a port. When I woke up the next morning and you weren’t there, I didn’t know what to think. I looked for you, but you were gone, everything about you seemed to be wiped clean. I didn’t know how to contact you, and the airport didn’t have any evidence of your departure. You were gone, as if you never existed.” That empty feeling of despair washed over Boomer like it had been yesterday when he’d woken up to find his bed empty, the woman he’d fallen for so completely missing.

“I had to disappear,” Daphne whispered. “Otherwise, I would have been gone for real.”

“I get that.” Boomer brushed the next tear away with the pad of his thumb. “But you had a baby.” He shook his head to clear the cobwebs and confusion. “Why didn’t you let me know sooner? I could have been there for you.”

She shook her head. “You were deployed. I had to stay in hiding. I couldn’t contact you. They were watching, waiting for me to make a move. Hell, I didn’t even have to make a move. They found us anyway.”

Boomer shoved a hand through his hair as the enormity of her words sank in. “Maya isn’t Chuck’s baby.”

Daphne snorted. “If you knew anything about me and if you’d have quit thinking the worst of me, you’d have known.” She wrapped her arms around her middle, tucking her hands into the fabric of her jacket. “I love Chuck…like a father or big brother. In fact, I don’t know what I would have done without him over the past year. But the father of Maya is the rat-bastard standing in front of me, thinking I could be fickle enough to hop from one bed to another.” She turned to walk back into the house. “I don’t need this aggravation. I have a life, and it began with Maya.”

When Boomer tried to stop her by placing a hand on her arm, she glared down at his fingers curled into her jacket. “I need you to protect me and my daughter. Other than that, leave me alone.”

Boomer’s chest tightened and words rose up from his throat. Before he could utter them and put his other foot squarely in his mouth, he swallowed hard. The angry, determined look on Daphne’s face stopped him cold.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogo

I have been waiting for this Multi-Author Series since Sleeper SEALs ended. Cat Johnson kicked this off with the prequel and this is the first book.

Now Garret isn’t quite sure he’s ready or even willing to take on this assignment. He’s happy living Northern California with his dog, garden and chickens. However, he does travel to DC to find out what it’s all about.

Meeting face to face with Silas Branson, a former SEAL Commander now in charge of a brand new division of Homeland Security, Bone Frog Command, he is told to decide yes or no before the nature of this assignment is divulged.

The President’s daughter has gone missing. Due to the nature her disappearance there is speculation that she has left of her own accord. This is the initial assignment for the Bone Frog Command and the entire fate of not only Georgette Collier, but also the division is at stake. Garrett will have full control over the personnel on his team but one is the choice of the State Department and the White House.

Mimi Wagner is Georgette Collier’s teacher. She has had many high profile students in the time she’s been teaching at Washington Academy. She was surprised when she was notified that Georgette would be out of class for while with no real notice. Usually she had a week or two to gather assignments for a student who was going to be out for any length of time. She has no idea she is about to become part of the team searching for the daughter of the POTUS.

This is a favorite scene when she tells Garrett who she is.

He crossed and uncrossed his legs, picked up the lined tablet Branson had given him. “Now you were about to be honest with me. Tell me about yourself. They’ll be providing me with a file, but I’d like to hear about you with your own words first.”

She ran her fingers through her mahogany hair, which was long but curly, held with a clip she removed and then replaced. He liked the look of it long during those brief seconds and decided not to hold back on the smile to show her so.

She was scowling when she removed her large, oval glasses and wiped them on the edge of her skirt between her thumb and third finger. She looked out the large dining room window into the woods, deep in thought. The silent view the trees resembled large overstretched ghostly shadows. Dusk was upon them. It felt like the witching hour.

She angled her head, holding her glasses in her right hand, and then peered across the coffee table at him, leaning forward. Her eyes looked familiar, but he knew he’d have remembered her if they’d ever dated. Mimi was a diamond in the rough, a beautiful, unspoiled specimen of feminine strength. When he was younger, she would be just his type. Her face was peachy and fresh, and he had the overwhelming desire to kiss her. If this was a date, he’d have done it by now. But this was no date.

“You don’t remember me, do you?” she whispered, then put back her glasses, blinking as she did so.

Garrett suddenly felt himself turn red. Something inside him had blown up. Had he slept with her before? He was sure he’d have remembered. His confidence oozed right out of the bottoms of his shoes.

“I’m sorry. I don’t believe we’ve met. Correct me, if I’m wrong. And, if so, I’m very, very sorry.”

“You have nothing to feel sorry about. I told you I knew a lot about Navy SEALs. As it turns out, you knew my dad.”

Panic started to constrict Garrett’s chest. Had he been hitting—okay, not hitting, but thinking about hitting—on the daughter of a buddy? Holy smoke. Talk about going from bad to worse!

“Who is your dad?”

“Connor Lambert.”

He shot up, screaming, “No! You’re the—the—daughter.”

“Margaret. Yes, Dad used to call me Maggie. I decided to leave that for him and changed my name to Mimi afterwards. But I’m Margaret Lambert.”

Garrett stared down at her like she was an injured dog he needed to treat. He’d violated her already with his stupid, disgusting behavior.

“Maggie—Margaret, sorry, Mimi. I’ll honor that. Look at you!” He didn’t know what else to say. It wasn’t appropriate to tell her she’d grown up a stunner, that with her braids and braces gone, she was a thoroughly mature, attractive young woman. And the spitting image of his best friend, Connor. That’s when he realized those eyes of hers that he thought he recognized were indeed the eyes of that fourteen-year-old girl who’d just lost her father. The young, fragile girl he’d held in his arms and wished he could give some comfort. He’d thought about her and her mother and wondered what had become of them. He’d heard rumors of her mom. But he’d always wanted to know how they fared. He’d been too removed to know about Mimi’s husband.

He came around the coffee table and held his arms wide, not wanting to step on anything that smacked of something inappropriate. He was asking for permission to give her a hug.

She stood and stepped carefully to him, leaning against his chest with her head staring down at her feet. That’s when his arms encircled her, hugging her tight against him, his hands holding her head tenderly. “God, I’m so sorry I didn’t know.”

The two of them swayed together for several seconds. He felt like he’d captured a big, beautiful but wounded exotic creature. It had been a long time since he’d shared any of his private grief with anyone else who felt the same way.

But now, what about the mission?

He separated them at arm’s length, gripping the top of her arms.

“You can’t be here. They should have—”

“Garrett,” she said as she stepped back two paces and found a safe space to stand. “I’m the only one I think she’ll listen to. I don’t care what that—that woman has to say, Georgette’s not close with her parents, especially her mother. Anything that comes from them, won’t be trusted. But if something’s happened to her, I can identify her. I can identify her out of a crowd, in a hospital, in disguise, or—God forbid—in a morgue. I can tell if it’s her on the phone, or if her text message is legit. I don’t think even her mother could do that.”

She was right, but the added burden of their shared grief and past, made this a very bad idea, Garrett realized.

“I just don’t know. We’ll have to tell them, Branson and the president, of course.”

“Of course. If they want me off the team, so be it. It’s your call. No hard feelings either way if the answer is I go back to teaching. This isn’t what I do. It’s what you do, Garrett. If it was my dad standing here before me I’d say the same thing. You gotta do what you gotta do for the Team, like always. If I’m in the way, I go home.”

Garrett wanted to reassure her—but he wasn’t positive he could trust his feelings yet. After all, the decision could be out of his control, despite what they’d told him.

Mimi began to pace the floor, turning turning here and there to add emphasis to her thoughts. He followed every movement she made like he was her student.

“Meanwhile, instead of talking about me, why don’t we talk about you, Garrett? If that’s too personal, we can talk about Georgette. I can tell you everything I know about her. I’m here to help. This isn’t a camping trip, like one of your boys reminded me. There’s a lot at stake.”

He liked how she thought. She had the same calm logic that he’d relied on with Conor at his side. He knew she was concerned for Georgette, and this was definitely not an arena she was comfortable in, but she was able to work through those emotions and get to the point.

God, how he loved women who could just get right to it.

Keep it straight and narrow.

“Go for it, Mimi. I’m listening.”

“I don’t know how your normally do things, Garrett. And maybe I don’t fit in, or get to stay, but I’m here to help however I can. I’d like to see her back safe and sound. There are a lot of things that could happen to her, and I’ve read enough books to imagine hundreds of ways this could end. Most of them are not very happy.”

She definitely was an asset. He decided to stop fighting himself, and start using what she had to offer. She was completely right.

“Can I ask you a question first?” he asked.

“Of course.” She gave him a timid smile.

“When did you know?”

“Excuse me?”

“Know who I was.” He watched her eyes widen and her mouth open with surprise.

“You haven’t changed a bit. I’d have recognized you thirty years from now. I had a lot of time to think about it. And I had all afternoon to figure out how I was going to approach you, because I wasn’t sure you weren’t playing with me. I just didn’t think this ‘high level’ group,” she said using her fingers as quotes, “wouldn’t have figured it out first, and that bothered me. So that should tell you how well they’ve vetted everything, including your helpers here. A lot can happen in a week. Something’s wrong.”

Again, she was smartly assessing their situation. And she’d successfully steered the conversation away from the interpersonal cloud that still remained between them. He hoped trusting her intuitions wouldn’t wind them into some unforeseen danger. But he wanted to in the worst way.

“So, what do you think happened?” he asked.

Mimi hesitated, putting her fingers against the glass on the window overlooking the woods.
Hamilton, Sharon. SEAL Love’s Legacy (Silver SEALs Book 1) (pp. 59-66). Frog Haven Press. Kindle Edition.

While I’m not really a fan of May – December relationships, this one captured me.

The situation is tense as the clock ticks for finding Georgette. The way these two finally get together had me hemming and hawing a bit, but I get the why.

I liked the team Garrett put together and Mimi was definitely key in the mission.

While there were editing errors that slipped by I still enjoyed the story and I can’t wait for the next book to come out. The Silver Seals have won my heart.

The Montgomery Ink: Colorado Springs series continues with a couple fighting to keep what they thought they had and gain what they didn’t know they needed.

Roxie Montgomery met her soul mate when she least expected it. When he asked her to marry him, she thought her happily ever after was only just beginning. Then, she found that walking into the sunset was much harder than her favorite books made it out to be. After a crushing loss, she feels as though she doesn’t know her husband anymore, or rather…she doesn’t know herself.

Carter Marshall has loved Roxie since the first time he saw her. But as the days pass between them, so does the distance. He doesn’t know how to show her that he’s all in, and honestly doesn’t know if she’s in at all. When an accident changes everything, they’ll have to decide if what they have can be salvaged, or if starting over is the answer. Or even possible.

Without fighting, without a true new beginning, sometimes, the remnants of what was lost can leave anyone jagged, shells of what they were before. It will take more than the idea of forever for Roxie and Carter to find themselves again, but as the Montgomerys know, nothing worth fighting for is easy.

This book had me holding my breath at the beginning as Carter saves Thea when the oven in her bakery blows up. It was instinct, Thea is Roxie’s sister and he would do anything to save Roxie pain. As he recovers from the burns, the lack of communication between him and Roxie becomes more apparent to the family.

This is more than just a lack of communication, this is a total withdrawal from each other. It’s so bad before the accident Roxie had filed for divorce. Carter sees the papers when he walks in the door from the hospital. Not exactly a warm homecoming.

This is a story of stepping back and starting over, it is heartbreaking and emotional. Family tries to stay away from the conflict while sending Liam to give a touch of support to Roxie.

Carter leaves because that’s what Roxie wants, not what he desires. He stays with their friend Landon and also has the support of her brother, Ryan.

I really wanted to smack these two, they are obviously in love with each other but have no communication skills whatsoever. The journey had me crying and hoping they could find their way.

I loved their new beginning with the wonderful dates and slow start to talking about what really is at the heart of everything.

They still had a couple of hours before bed, but neither of them commented on that. They were just going to go their separate ways, a prelude to what would happen as soon as Carter was completely healed.

Roxie gave him a tight nod and then went upstairs. He did his best not to look at her. Because when he looked at her, he ached.

Because he missed his wife. He missed her smile, he missed everything about her.

He missed the way she would laugh at something inane and then bury her face in her hands because she knew that it was silly to laugh at it.
He missed her touch, her taste. Yeah, he missed sex, but it wasn’t like they’d had sex recently. They used to have their hands on each other all the time.

And then she’d stopped talking.

She’d stopped smiling.

And he couldn’t figure out how to make her do either of them again. He’d tried, but it hadn’t worked.

And then, eventually, he’d stopped trying altogether.

And she hadn’t done anything about it.

So, this was his fault. Because he had tried, and he’d failed. It would always be his fault.

Always.
