When trust is broken by loss and grief, can it ever be repaired?
High school sweethearts and young lovers, Brad and Suzy had vowed to stay together forever. “I’ll always be here for you. Trust me,” Brad promised but loss separated the young lovers. Moving on with their lives, neither could fill the empty void nor forget their first love.
Suzanne McDonald had closed herself off to dating in spite of the best efforts of her friends to play matchmaker and threw herself into her job as a veterinarian technician.
Brad, now known as BJ to his friends, had focused on his career as a computer programmer for Alverez Security Agency.
When a mutual friend played matchmaker between BJ and Suzanne, the two were stunned to be reunited.
Her grief, still raw after all these years, had her running away once again. Brad knew he had let her leave years ago when he was a young man but now vowed to show her that they were still meant for each other. In spite of the walls she had built around her heart, Brad was determined to break them down and earn her love and trust once again.
When Suzanne stumbles across evidence of organized crime taking place in her neighborhood, she puts herself at risk trying to save others.
Can Brad rescue Suzy before she is silenced permanently? Can she trust in Brad’s love to save her?
I knew something was up with Suzanne since she only goes home to visit at infrequent times. I just couldn’t figure out what it was.
The unavoidable happens when Lily tries to get BJ from Alvarez Security and Suzanne from Annie’s Veterinarian Clinic together at Shane and Annie’s wedding.
This is a favorite and jaw dropping scene.
Don’t try to fix me up with someone. You know I’m not interested.”
Lily speared her with a sympathetic look. “Honey, I know you were hurt a long time ago. And I know you grieve for something lost. I just want to see you happy.”
Smiling at the couple in front of her, she gave a little shrug as she whispered, “I had happy once. But when it’s broken, there’s no getting it back.”
She stood and then kissed the top of Lily’s head as she said, “I’m going to go mingle with some old friends. You two have fun.” Winking at Matt, she floated away.
One table, in particular, caught her attention. Four large, handsome men sat around the table, as comfortable in their suits as they would be in a biker bar. Tony Alvarez ran a security company that had helped save Annie when she had been kidnapped earlier in the year. Gabe, Vinny, and Jobe sat with him with one chair empty. Having all served in the military together, each man brought their own special skills to their new civilian careers. Tony had been the squad leader and maintained that position in his new business. While they all seemed like brothers to her, she knew that the table full of hard, handsome men would catch the eye of any single women at the wedding…and probably a few married ones as well. They all stood as she approached and Gabe leaned over to give her a hug and a brotherly kiss on her cheek. Greeting them, she nodded toward the empty chair. “Who’s missing?” she asked.
Vinny, always the ladies’ man, jumped up to pull the chair out for her. “Why you, of course.”
Laughing, she punched his shoulder as his twin Gabe responded, “It’s for BJ. He’s on his way from a family event.”
Raising her eyebrow at this news, she had the feeling that BJ’s co-workers and friends were just as anxious for her to meet him as Lily was. “Hmmm, well we’ll see if he shows.”
Giving each man a hug, she made her way over to another table. She saw some old family friends from Fairfield, the town she grew up in, so she moved over to greet them. Emma Campbell had been her high school counselor and had married her brother’s best friend, Jake. Along with them was Carol and Tom Rivers, another one of her brother’s best friends.
The two couples couldn’t believe that the beautiful woman in front of them was so grown up.
After hugs and greetings, Emma kept her arm around her, pulling her in tightly. “I miss you so much. Your mom’s bakery was never the same after you left home. But I’m so proud of what you’ve accomplished. Are you happy?”
“I love my job and working for Annie,” Suzanne effused. “I’m thinking about going back to school to become a veterinarian nurse. It would allow me to do a few more things than I can do right now. The animals are great and our clinic…well, I can’t think of a better place to work.”
Emma exclaimed, “Your enthusiasm for your job is overwhelming. But that still doesn’t tell me if you are happy.”
Suzanne found herself scrutinized by Emma’s thoughtful gaze. “I’m happy enough,” she replied, her smile not quite reaching her eyes.
“Do you ever see…” Emma began.
Shaking her head, Suzanne’s eyes widened. “Nope. And no, I’m not talking about it.”
Emma patted her shoulder before pulling her in for a tight hug. “It’s okay.” Giving a small smile, Suzanne was just getting ready to turn away when Lily came over to her. Besides Annie, Lily was her closest friend.
“Sweetie, come with me,” Lily said as she linked her arms through Suzanne’s.
“He’s here, right? Oh Lily, you know I hate this.”
“Come on. It’s just an introduction. All the guys at Tony’s really like him and you know how much he helped me last year.” Lily had stumbled across a prescription fraud scheme, and BJ had helped her with the software codes that contained the evidence they were looking for.
Suzanne allowed Lily to tug her through the crowded reception hall then heard her name called. She turned around to see Leon waving at her from across the room. He worked as a vet tech with Annie as well and was there with his wife. Behind her, she could hear Lily say, “BJ, I’d like you to meet…”
Suzanne turned around and stared into the eyes of the man she had been avoiding for four years. Gasping, she saw his eyes widen.
Oh no, not him. Not now. Opening her mouth like a fish, she found that nothing came out. Just as he looked like he was going to say something, she quickly turned. “I have to get out of here,” she said, pushing her way through the crowd.
Jordan, Maryann. Love’s Trusting: The Love’s Series. Kindle Locations (147-181). Kindle Edition.
To say that Suzanne’s reaction to seeing BJ was surprising is an understatement. Although this is definitely where some of the fun begins, as BJ declares he’s not letting her get away again.
As BJ tries to win back the heart of the only girl he’s ever loved, owners not returning for follow-up on their pets has Susanne visiting them at home. Unfortunately this is drawing attention to herself and Annie’s clinic that she doesn’t even realize.
A convoluted and intriguing tale brings us not only to dogfighting and human trafficking but also BJ’s and Suzanne’s relationship takes off with enough heat to melt your kindle. There’s an added bonus of the beginning of another relationship involving Alvarez Security’s Tony.
I really the way this series has tied everything together for me.
