How It All Started…

One day I was a high school teacher on summer break, leading a relatively uneventful but happy life. Or so I told myself. Later, I’d question that, as I would question pretty much everything I knew about me, my relationships, and my desires. It all began when my neighbor thrust a key to a storage unit at me. She’d bought it to make extra money after watching some storage auction show. Now she was on her way to the airport to elope with a man she barely knew, and she needed me to clear out the unit before the lease expired.

Soon, I was standing inside a small room that held the intimate details of another woman’s life, feeling uncomfortable, as if I was invading her privacy. Why had she let these items so neatly packed, possessions that she clearly cared about deeply, be lost at an auction? Driven to find out by some unnamed force, I began to dig, to discover this woman’s life, and yes, read her journals–dark, erotic journals that I had no business reading. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. I read on obsessively, living out fantasies through her words that I’d never dare experience on my own, compelled by the three men in her life, none of whom had names. I read onward until the last terrifying dark entry left me certain that something had happened to this woman. I had to find her and be sure she was okay.

Before long, I was taking her job for the summer at the art gallery, living her life, and she was nowhere to be found. I was becoming someone I didn’t know. I was becoming her.

The dark, passion it becomes…

Now, I am working at a prestigious gallery, where I have always dreamed of being, and I’ve been delivered to the doorstep of several men, all of which I envision as one I’ve read about in the journal. But there is one man that will call to me, that will awaken me in ways I never believed possible. That man is the ruggedly sexy artist, Chris Merit, who wants to paint me. He is rich and famous, and dark in ways I shouldn’t find intriguing, but I do. I so do. I don’t understand why his dark side appeals to me, but the attraction between us is rich with velvety promises of satisfaction. Chris is dark, and so are his desires, but I cannot turn away. He is damaged beneath his confident good looks and need for control, and in some way, I feel he needs me. I need him.

All I know for certain is that he knows me like I don’t even know me, and he says I know him. Still, I keep asking myself — do I know him? Did he know her, the journal writer, and where is she? And why doesn’t it seem to matter anymore? There is just him and me, and the burn for more.

When I first started reading this book, I didn’t realize what those first pages were. I sighed and thought sarcastically ‘Great, starts right in with the sex’.

I continued reading and I was pleasantly surprised to find I had read just a journal entry that becomes our mystery. Ms. Jones weaves a complicated tale around a school teacher Sara McMillian and the Art World of San Francisco.

Everyone has secrets and some are best left hidden. The journal, it turns out was found in a storage locker owned via an auction by her neighbor. Who elopes and gives the key and the contents to Sara. Additional journals induce Sara to attempt finding the owner. Instead she finds a summer job at an Art Gallery, replacing Rebecca, (the owner of the locker). One that may lead to a permanent job in what she is passionate about, art.

In the process she meets Chris Merit an acclaimed artist with plenty of secrets of his own and one she admires. What ensues is a very hot, very complicated relationship.

Is the Gallery manager Mark a major player in the disappearance of Rebecca? Is she really on an extended vacation or is she truly missing and in danger?

The storage unit is a key player in the book, and her ownership of it has the suspense rising.

One of my favorite exchanges in the book is between Mark and Sara, after a wine tasting event.

“Chris made us both a lot of money tonight. Making money is not a terminating offense. Now, using Chris to manipulate me for money would be, but you wouldn’t do that, now would you?”

“No”, I say, and dare to go where I would normally never go, but then nothing is normal about the past few days. “And I don’t want to be a part of the ‘who’s got the bigger sword?’ contest you two have going on, either. I don’t do cockfights. I just want to do my job and do it well.”

Although this is a cliffhanger which would normally have me cursing the author, I think I need a new thesaurus to describe my reactions to this book. Hot, sexy, mysterious, suspenseful, all seem inadequate.

Swede – SEALs of Honor Book 4 By Dale Mayer

SEALs of Honor Book 4

Swede watched the other SEALs fall one by one, even as murder got in the way of love…

But his turn for love had yet to come. Swede hoped that he’d be lucky enough to find the perfect partner but knew it wasn’t going to happen while deep in the wilds of Mexico hunting a rebel training camp. Until a group of civilians showed up in the middle of their operation and he found out that the one person he’d known to be the wrong woman for him – was right in the middle of it.

Eva had always loved animals, especially those in need. When a friend requested help moving a large group of horses from Mexico to their new homes, she jumped at it. And landed in trouble. With Swede, an old frenemy determined to extricate her.

As he worked to keep her safe, she struggled to protect her heart. Only the rebels had plans of their own – and it didn’t involve a happy ending for either of them.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

There can’t be anything more disconcerting to a SEAL team doing recon, than to be spotted by a civilian who shouldn’t be able to see them at all.

Swede and Shadow were checking out the outer perimeter of a terrorist training camp in Mexico, when they were surrounded by horses. These horses were rescues being rounded up by a group to transport them to new homes in the US. I probably shouldn’t have been as amused as I was but dang it was funny.

This is a favorite scene.

Under the cover of heavy growth, he waited until Shadow slipped to his side.

“What’s up?” Swede asked in a low voice.

“Hawk has learned something about a group of civilians close by who are trying to round up a small group of horses being shipped today.”

Civilians? What the hell. Swede closed his eyes. Damn it. They couldn’t pull off the op if civilians were in the area. It was bad enough the rebels already knew about the civilians, the women, but he didn’t want these people to know about the rebels. Or about his team of SEALs. That was not in the cards.

“Is the op cancelled?”

“Stalled while we figure out how close the–”

Just then the sound of running hooves raced toward them. And galloped past at top speed. Swede wanted to cheer the horses on, except the horses were in rough shape. Ribs visible and bony skulls covered by rough hides that looked dull and sickly. Shit. These horses needed the rescue. He couldn’t imagine where they were going or who was a part of this, but he hated to see any animal in trouble. Even exhausted and worn out these animals could cover a lot of ground fast.

An odd crooning cry rent the air. More like a cowboy call to the horses. The horses calmed, circling around Swede and Shadow’s hiding spot, their panic stilling, their movements slowing. Two mounted riders came into view, corralling the horses between them and persuading the animals to turn back the way they’d come. One of the riders continued to croon to the horses.

Swede and Shadow stood in silence, letting the horses do their thing. They weren’t in danger and both were animal lovers. Hell, Swede was bigger than some of these poor things.

He grinned. This was a new one. As operations went, all kinds of things could go wrong, but a band of horses hadn’t happened before.

Another mounted rider broke through the dense brush. A woman. Her gaze was intent as she checked out the trees, looking for any horses that might have been missed.

Her gaze floated past both Shadow and Swede. Swede recognized the moment she realized something was different, and her gaze zinged back to stare at the spot both men stood.

“Swede?” she asked in shock. “Shadow?”

Ah shit.

Swede felt Shadow’s start of shock. It was damn near impossible to see the two men on a good day, but when they were hidden like this – there was no way she should have seen them. That she not only saw them, but recognized who they were…

That was seriously bad.

Especially when neither knew her.

The woman, a hat pulled low, scarf up over her chin and nose, nudged her horse closer.

How the hell had they been seen?

“It is you, isn’t it?”

The men melted farther into the shadows. The horse she rode bucked slightly, not happy with the situation.

The woman gasped. “Oh shit. I’m so sorry. I’ll leave now.”

She spun her horse and urged him away. In seconds the horse and rider had disappeared into the trees following the same path as the other horses.

Swede turned slowly to look at Shadow.

“Did you recognize her?”

“With the scarf, hat and oversized shirt – hell no.”
Mayer, Dale. SEALs of Honor: Books 4-6. Kindle Locations (112-138). Valley Publishing. Kindle Edition.

What was even more amusing to me was when the guys were all together and Swede and Shadow finally realize who it was that saw them. Hawk’s sister Eva, who should be home tending her own horses was here in Mexico with those civilians rounding up these horses.

A tense situation that just became very complicated. Swede gets sent in to play Eva’s fiancé with whom she had fought before coming on this rescue trip. So in spite of the seriousness of the situation I found myself giggling more than a few times.

Plenty of suspense, some out loud laughs and sizzling heat as Swede and Eva realize they are meant to be together.

He’s the total package.

Except …

Eric Miller isn’t looking for a long term relationship. And he definitely isn’t thrilled when a friend signs him up for The Boyfriend Experience app behind his back. It’s not like he has a problem getting women on his own. But when he gets a notification that someone is in need of his . . . services, he’s intrigued enough to check out her profile and can’t resist the sexy, sassy little brunette who only wants him as a decoy for a family event.

Evie Bennett needs a boyfriend, stat. Someone who can accompany her to her family reunion so she doesn’t have to explain that she’s been recently dumped. Again. She’s perfectly happy being an independent woman, but what’s a girl to do when her new fake boyfriend starts to feel like the real deal?

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

I really like this whole concept of a boyfriend for hire. Nothing long term but to cover those uncomfortable situations that require one.

Of course the way Eric got added to the site was hysterical and the fact that his friend Dylan managed to accept that beta request was even funnier. Well funny to me, not so much to Eric.

Evie really needs a date for her family reunion weekend, not so much for her parents but to ward off her cousin and her fiancé, the fiancé that just happens to be one of Evie’s ex-boyfriends.

Now Eric wasn’t going to do it, he was going to tell her that when they met but there was just something about Evie that he couldn’t turn her down. He did however have to check his work schedule.

This is a favorite scene.

As he headed back toward her with both of their drinks in hand, she regained her composure. By the time he sat down across from her again and she had her first sip of her caffeinated latte, she felt like she could carry on an intelligent conversation with him.

“I have to say, hiring someone to be my boyfriend isn’t something I’d normally do,” she said, not sure why she thought she had to justify her actions to him, but doing it anyway. Maybe because the scenario seemed so . . . desperate, and that’s the last thing she wanted him to think. Even if it was partially true.

His eyes twinkled at her from above the rim of his cup as he took a drink of his own coffee before replying. “And offering my services to impersonate a woman’s boyfriend isn’t something I’d normally do, either.”

She laughed at that. “You’re the one who signed up to be on the Boyfriend Experience app.”

The corner of his mouth quirked with humor. “Touché,” he said, as if there was more to his story than met the eye, but he didn’t share anything more.

Whatever his reasons for being on the app, she wasn’t about to judge. She figured he needed the money, or maybe he just enjoyed randomly dating women and playing the part of a doting boyfriend. Clearly there was a demand for that kind of service, and someone had to fulfill the requests.

“So, back to my question,” he said, leaning back casually in his seat, causing his shirt to tighten across his chest, just enough to hint at the toned body beneath. “Why would a beautiful woman like you need to hire a fake boyfriend?”

Her cheeks warmed at his flattery. He definitely had the charm part of his persona down pat, along with a sense of humor. He’d already proven to be kind and considerate by insisting to buy her drink, and overall, he was easy to be with. Maybe because this wasn’t a real date. She didn’t have to impress him since she’d be paying him to do a job, and there were no expectations between them other than what she required from him.

“To make a long story short, my ex cheated on me after four months together,” she said, getting the humiliating part of the story out of the way. “He was supposed to attend a family reunion with me over the Fourth of July weekend and meet my parents and relatives for the first time.”

Confusion furrowed his brows. “In four months together, they’ve never seen a picture of this guy?” he asked incredulously. “Or do I look like him?”

“Ahhh, no, to both questions,” she said, and explained. “He’s a social worker and doesn’t have any social media accounts, and I never sent a picture of him to my parents. But you do share the same first name. I figured you both being an Eric would make me less likely to mess up your name in front of my family.”

“Is that why you chose me?” he asked curiously, his gaze holding hers, warm and too damn tempting. “Because our names are the same?”

“Initially, that’s what made me click on your profile.” She didn’t mention that his gorgeous face had been part of what had influenced her decision because that seemed so superficial. “Then I read your bio, and it was quirky and funny and made me laugh, and trust me when I say I need a guy who doesn’t take things too seriously, because my parents are a little over-the-top and you’re going to need to roll with the punches when it comes to them.” And to also deal with her disingenuous, two-faced cousin and her underhanded remarks.

“Can’t wait to hear more about them,” he said, grinning as he took another drink of his Americano, giving her a moment to appreciate his long fingers and neatly trimmed nails. “So, are you trying to please your parents by bringing a boyfriend to the reunion? Are they the type who are anxious for you to settle down so they can have grandbabies and you don’t want to deal with the whole when are you getting married spiel?”

She laughed and shook her head. “No, they’ve honestly never pressured me.”

Turning more serious, Evie absently rubbed her palms along her thighs beneath the table, knowing she needed to clue him in to why she was hiring him so he’d be on his game while interacting with her family, but hating the embarrassing reality of the situation. “The truth is, I don’t want to show up at the reunion and have to explain to everyone that I’m no longer with Eric . . . the other Eric. They’ll want to know what happened, and I’ll have to explain the degrading story of being duped and cheated on, and everyone is going to feel sorry for me the entire time I’m there and treat me with kid gloves because they’ll think I’m depressed over the breakup.”

“Are you? Depressed over how things ended?” he asked.

She shook her head, and since he seemed genuinely interested in her answer, she replied candidly. “No. I’m more angry that I didn’t see it coming, and that I dismissed red flags I should have paid more attention to because I didn’t want to be one of those paranoid girlfriends who didn’t trust their boyfriend. In hindsight, I should have listened to my gut, and now I find it a little hard to trust my own judgment when it comes to . . .” Realizing the direction the conversation was heading, she abruptly stopped talking. The last thing she wanted to do was bare her insecurities to a guy she’d just met or have him feel sorry for her.

“When it comes to men?” He finished the sentence anyway. His low voice, threaded with understanding, prompted her to be honest.

“Yeah.” She nodded. “That’s why a pretend boyfriend works for me.

In spite of the way they were matched up, it was so enjoyable to watch this relationship develop. We get more insight into why Eric doesn’t want a serious relationship, tears there folks.

Evie’s parents are a hoot and her cousin well she’s a bully and an overbearing, obnoxious woman.

Lots of laughs, tears and seriously hot scenes. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Erika Wilde (aka Janelle Denison) is the USA Today bestselling author of over 50 contemporary romances for multiple print publishers.
So, why the new pen name?

As Janelle Denison I’ve always written sexy books, but lately my writing has taken on more erotic elements that I wanted to keep separate for readers because not everyone likes their reading material on the spicier, kinkier side of romance. However, please be assured that even as Erika Wilde, you will still get an emotionally layered story with characters you’ll care about and fall in love with. That is always my goal, whether I’m writing straight contemporary romances, or more erotically charged stories.

Currently, I’m working on The Marriage Diaries and making sure that Dean and Jillian enjoy exploring the more erotic side to their marriage. The series will be on-going, with no foreseeable ending as of right now, for as long as readers want to be voyeurs to Dean and Jillian’s sizzling new relationship.

I’m also planning a spin-off series in the future, featuring the hot military men that work security for Dean at Noble and Associates.

Falling for the enemy never felt so good.

K19 Security Specialist Gunner Godet is so deep undercover that nobody on his team knows where he is or what he’s signed up for. And now that he’s vowed to help a sexy and mysterious woman from the dirtiest Russian organization in all of Eastern Europe, his only chance at survival lies in her hands—and arms. Luckily, Gunner refuses to give his heart to a woman ever again. Otherwise, he’d be in more danger than he ever imagined.

Zaryana “Raketa” Ivashov wants out—out of the game. But pulling out of this “political party” means defecting and trusting an enemy. As Gunner and Raketa journey for safety, their attraction grows stronger, their passion undeniable. But can two sworn enemies find happiness in a world of danger and betrayal?

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

I have to say when the guys of K19 fall in love it’s not easy by any definition.

Gunner knew Zaryana ‘Raketa’ Ivashov was the one for him when she didn’t shoot him on a mission. She works for United Russia and wants to defect. She couldn’t carry out her last mission, so returning would be suicide.

While helping protect Razor’s now wife Ava she ended up kidnapped by Petrov. Now Gunner needs to find her as well as get the five million dollar bounty off her head.

Once Gunner has her he takes her into protection on his island. It’s here we get insight into Raketa’s life.

This is a favorite scene.

There were many forms of torture; she herself had an arsenal she’d used to get…information. However, the form Gunner was using wasn’t intentional. Or was it?

There he stood, sweat glistening from a body almost too perfect to be anything but sculpted from stone, wearing nothing but workout shorts and shoes. It was all she could do not to run at him, knock him on the ground, and trail her tongue over the hard outline of his every muscle.

Instead, she turned, went back into the house, and stomped in the direction of the bedroom he’d deposited her in the night before.

She could hear his footfalls and prayed he wouldn’t open the door she’d slammed shut.

When he didn’t, Raketa’s disappointment far outweighed her relief.

She looked in the closet, shocked to find clothes that weren’t her own, but close enough to what she usually traveled with that they could’ve been. She found the same when she opened the drawers to the dresser.

“Who do these belong to?” she demanded when she stalked out to the kitchen with a few pieces of clothing in her hand.

“You,” he answered without looking up at her.

“Why?”

This time he looked, raised an eyebrow, but didn’t answer.

“I need a shower.”

Gunner pointed toward the hallway. “Second door on the right.”

She stalked back into the bedroom, rummaged through the clothes he’d provided, and then opened the door he’d indicated.

“This isn’t a lavatory,” she said, coming back into the hallway.

“Keep going,” he said, again not looking up at her.

She turned to go farther down the hallway.

“Into the room,” she heard him say.

“What?”

Gunner came toward her and opened the door she’d initially gone through. He stepped aside and motioned for her to go around him.

“This is your bedroom,” she said when she stepped inside.

“And if you go through that doorway, you’ll be in my bathroom.”

Raketa turned around and looked at him. “Don’t you have another?”

Gunner shook his head and closed the door behind him, leaving her standing alone in a room that was vastly different than the rest of what she’d seen of the house.

Instead of the cool and neutral tones that had been used in the bedroom she’d slept in, this one was done in rich dark brown and black. She never would’ve predicted it of him, but now that she was seeing it, the decor suited Gunner perfectly.

The wall the headboard of the bed rested against was covered with rough wood, with an outlined map of the globe etched into it. A ledge ran the entire distance of the wall where photos and other trinkets of memorabilia sat. Another of the walls was covered with rough and old-looking brick. There was a fireplace holding several wood logs built into the center of it.

It was the stuff sitting on the ledge that threw Raketa the most. She never would’ve expected Gunner to be at all sentimental. The fact that he was, was almost shocking and, for some reason, made her sad.

Photos, trinkets, even memories, had never been a part of her life. Raketa was essentially an orphan, or had always believed herself to be.

When her parents died, she’d been sent to Moscow, alone, and had been met by a stern man who smelled horribly and didn’t seem to understand Azeri, the only language she spoke at the time.

He’d driven her to a “home” that housed both girls and boys, orphans like she was.

She’d lived there until she turned seventeen, when another man came

Slade, Heather. Gunner (K19 Security Solutions Book 2) . Sparrow Publishing. Kindle Edition. to the home and took her along with seven other girls.

She remembered being one of the two in their group of eight who hadn’t wept in fear, and thus, hadn’t incurred the wrath of the man who came for them. Instead, she’d stayed quiet, hoping to make herself seem as small and insignificant as possible. When that hadn’t worked, the only other girl who hadn’t wept with the others, got between her and the man who likely would’ve raped her. She’d taken a beating, but spared Raketa, who had been far smaller than her.

From that day on, that girl became her protector. They’d learned that the eight of them had been chosen because of their “better-than-average looks,” in order to train them to work for Russian intelligence.

Both Raketa and the other woman had risen further than the others, eventually becoming operatives and assassins. She had been the one who’d first called her Raketa—the rocket. In turn, she’d called her Losha, for she was strong as a horse but could run like the wind.
Slade, Heather. Gunner (K19 Security Solutions Book 2). Kindle Locations (713-747). Sparrow Publishing. Kindle Edition.

So many twists and turns as K19 works to figure out who the woman was Raketa saw and what her real relationship to Petrov is.

Cape Cod SEAL Rescue – Brotherhood Protectors Book 10 by Elle James

Cape Cod SEAL Rescue
Brotherhood Protectors Book 10
By

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Grieving Navy SEAL widower, John Decker, commemorating the two-year anniversary of the day he lived and his wife died, is dragged back into life by a riptide and a blonde he can’t get out of his thoughts. Plagued with survivor’s guilt, he’s reluctant to enter a new relationship, until he meets a feisty bartender with attitude and curves to go with it.

Roxi Lanier was the typical young teen in the city, happy, full of life and bulletproof, until she became the victim of a violent crime. Her mother moved her to Wellfleet on Cape Cod, away from the scene of her misfortune to start over. Fourteen years later, she’s still afraid to date and be intimate with a man, the scars of her past overriding the happiness she craves. Though she’s an independent owner of a thriving beach bar, she has yet to find success in love. Tides change when she witnesses a suicidal widower diving headfirst into a riptide.

Decker and Roxi struggle to stay afloat through the wreckage of their pasts and the storms of the present to sail into a future together.

Note: This book was previously published as Love On The Rocks, but has since been edited and contains new content.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

This book starts off tugging at my heartstrings. Decker is a widower, the accident that took his wife’s life also led to his medical discharge from the Navy. Hank Patterson tries once again to entice him to come to Montana and join the Brotherhood Protectors, but he declines claiming to be content and satisfied living on the beach in Cape Cod.

Roxi owns the Gone Fishin’ Bar and Grill it’s a cozy place loved by locals and tourists alike. Decker frequently has dinner there and finds himself more than a little attracted to her. She frequently sees him on her runs with her dog Otis, sitting on his porch watching the ocean.

This particular night, filled with guilt, finds Decker heading into the ocean for a punishing swim to assuage the pain. Seeing him dive into the waters has Roxi scared he would be caught in the riptides caused by the approaching storm.

This is a favorite scene.

A figure detached itself from the stilts of a beach house ahead and walked across the sand to the edge of the water.

By size and the breadth of his shoulders, Roxi guessed the figure to be a man, and not just any man, but the one who’d been on her mind more and more with each passing day—John Decker.

Her heartbeat skittered against her ribs and she slowed to a stop, her bare toes curling in the wet sand.

Decker’s face remained turned toward the sea and he wore nothing but a pair of shorts or swim trunks. Moonlight glimmered off his naked chest, turning it a silvery blue. As he walked toward the water his pace increased until he ran into the surf lapping against the shore.

What was he doing? The tide report indicated the water wasn’t safe with the coming storm churning the sea.

Decker struck out, swimming hard out to sea. His arms sliced through the water, powering him farther away from shore, closer and closer to the area known for its wicked riptide.

“Decker!” Roxi ran toward the point at which he’d entered the water and waved. “Decker! Come back!”

Either he was ignoring her shouts or he couldn’t hear them with his head in the water, because he continued on his race toward a potentially deadly situation.

“Decker!” Roxi glanced to the right and left. The lifeguard towers were on the other side of the pier, too far to go for a life preserver.

Decker was too far out to hear her voice. If she could get close enough to warn him he might have a chance to turn around before he got sucked out even further by a riptide. Roxi waded into the water, her pulse pounding her stomach knotted. She was a good swimmer, having lived the last fourteen years on the Cape. She knew how to ride the tide into shore, but even she wasn’t naive enough to swim in riptide situations.

Cupping her hands around her mouth, Roxi shouted again.

Decker’s arms slowed and he glided to a stop.

Roxi gathered another breath. The dark head, now only a speck on the ocean, disappeared.

“Decker?” she whispered, her heart lodged in her throat. Then she dove into the water and swam as hard as she’d ever swum toward the spot she’d last seen him. She pushed back all of the warnings Frank and her mother had drilled into her head as she rose on the swell of a small wave and scanned ahead.

There. A hundred yards ahead, she spied Decker’s dark head, drifting south, carried by the current.

Otis barked from the shoreline, the sound carrying out to where Roxi paused to breathe, her lungs burning with the need for oxygen. She drew in a deep breath and yelled, “Decker!” A wave slapped her in the face, and she sucked salt water into her lungs. For a moment she sputtered, coughing and fighting to keep her head above the water as she cleared her lungs. When she could breathe again, she searched for Decker’s dark head on the water’s surface.

The swells had increased, and she couldn’t see him. Treading water, she turned toward the shore where Otis danced along the water’s edge, barking furiously. Once again, she turned toward the open sea, but couldn’t find Decker. The tide was pulling her south, past the pier. If she didn’t start angling toward the shore, she might not make it back. Now the fight to find Decker became a struggle to save herself. If she could get to shore, she would send out a rescue boat to find Decker, which she should have done in the first place.

Forcing herself to remain calm she struck out toward shore, swimming with the current while cutting at a diagonal toward the shore. The tide pulled at her like hands gripping her legs, dragging her toward the open sea. She fought against its clutches, kicking as hard as she could to break away. It seemed that for every inch forward, she lost two, hauling her backward. Her arms ached and the muscles in her legs burned. Roxi slowed and treaded water long enough to rest and catch her breath.

A figure surfaced beside her, startling her, but she was too tired to scream.

When she realized it was Decker, she almost cried in relief. Moonlight glistened off his wet hair, making it appear blue-black. His powerful shoulders rose above the surface as they bobbed with each swell.

“Don’t give up.” Decker grabbed her hand and pulled her against him with one arm, his free one stroking the water to keep them both afloat.

“I’m okay,” she insisted, not feeling okay, but unwilling to let him take on the burden of her, when she shouldn’t have swum after him in the first place. What had she been thinking? “I’m just resting before I swim again.”

“Let me know when you’re ready.” A wave splashed over them before he could continue. “We’ll make it to shore together.”

She nodded, the salty tang of water on her lips, a surge of hope fueling her tired muscles. Roxi kicked hard headed toward the sandy beach.

Decker paced her, silently swimming at her side, occasionally reaching out to pull her along.

Slowly, they edged toward land, and finally, Roxi’s toes encountered sand. She laughed as she staggered to her feet and slogged through knee-deep water toward a frantic Otis.

A strong arm slipped around her waist adding strength to her flagging reserves.

When they reached dry land, Roxi dropped to her knees on the gritty sand and rolled onto her back, completely drained of energy.

Otis licked her face, whining and shaking all over.

“Are you okay?” Decker knelt and leaned over her, peering into her face.

She forced her lips to curve upward. “I will be.”

“Good.” His brows dipped into a V and moonlight reflected off his eyes. “Then why the hell were you swimming alone this late at night?”
James, Elle. Cape Cod SEAL Rescue (Brotherhood Protectors Book 10) (pp. 19-24). Twisted Page Inc. Kindle Edition.

Roxi finds that her attraction could possibly lead to more, but is Decker ready to move on.

I love Otis, he’s such a loyal dog even if he’s scared of thunder and lightening. It’s Otis that causes them to have to ride out the storm in Decker’s cottage on the beach. A scary situation that is overridden by the heat between these two.

I can’t wait to see what Elle comes up with for the next book in this series.

Forbidden Reunion – Forbidden Series Book 7 By Carmen Falcone

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Engaged to one man. In love with another.

Savannah Buford needs to call off her engagement—to a nice reliable man who loves her. He asks her one last favor—to secure a client that could possibly save their PR firm. She agrees to help, only to find out the man in question is Kylian Chevillard, the French devil who broke her heart eight years ago.

Kylian needs a PR person to help him reopen his beloved resort in Hawaii. But when he accidentally learns about Savannah, he can’t pass up the opportunity to meet her again and see for himself if she still stirs him up inside. Their reunion proves he’s not done with her, and he’ll do everything in his power to win her back—and this time, for good.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogo

Technically only Kylian and Savannah’s first encounter would be considered forbidden, since Savannah had already decided to end her engagement but Daniel didn’t accept it.

Kylian and Savannah have history and one that didn’t end on a high note. Both of them have matured greatly since then and while the attraction is still there, the question becomes should she take a chance again. His proposal for her to take on the PR work for his newly renovated hotel in Hawaii grabs her interest and has her wondering what could be.

Daniel. His blood heated for a completely different reason—he curled his fingers into a ball, doing his best not to find the man and punch him vigorously. The way he’d touched Savannah’s elbow. If she had seemed mildly interested in her fiancé, he’d respect their relationship.

However, she’d inched away from Daniel. Shit, she didn’t like his touch. Why? Was she in trouble? Why would she keep Daniel as a fiancé when she didn’t want him to touch her? “I’m re-opening a resort in Maui. I had to close most of it because of a flood a few months ago. When it happened, the former resort manager didn’t comply with a couple of safety policies. The authorities found out and bad press followed.” He sighed, the damage caused by the torrential rain still vivid in his mind. Only a small section of rooms remained open, and he had decreased his marketing efforts until they found the right person to represent the hotel after the remodeling.

“Why me? I mean, I’m sure you have all kinds of connections.” The wind changed directions and Savannah tried unsuccessfully to brush some loose strands of silky hair from her face. He palmed the round glass.

Because I want you. Why couldn’t they try, try and see if they worked the second time round? Determination bolted through him. Older, smarter, and without insecurities from the past. Also, he no longer had the responsibilities of being the head of the family he had when he’d met her—he no longer had to take care of his mother and his brother. I am free.

Free…

Resolution lit inside him, fast-tracking his cells. Merde, could this work? He’d screwed Savannah over in the past, and a “sorry” wouldn’t cut it. He had to show her he’d changed—and quickly, before she married that man. Despite their history, Kylian would never fight for a married woman. He wouldn’t mess with anyone’s vows.

Until she made them though… it was fair game. She would be his again, and this time, he wouldn’t let her go like he had before. “I wronged you in the past, and this is a way to make up for it. I know working with me will give your firm a boost.”

Savannah lifted her chin. “I see your self-esteem hasn’t changed much.”

“A lot has changed… and some, fortunately, has not.” Kylian put his glass down on an empty table, and stared out at the darkness in front of him for a quiet moment. He turned to face her again, and she moved her head quickly, like she had been watching him. Warmth washed over him, a thrill of excitement racing down his body. When was the last time he’d felt like this? We aren’t finished. Maybe they never would be, and he owed it to them to find out.

“Whatever that meant. I know who you are under this fancy suit.” Savannah placed both hands on her waist.

“I didn’t know your memories of me were still so vivid after seven years,” he said, with a gravelly voice.

Savannah’s hands dropped to her sides. “Eight years.” She narrowed her eyes. “And you know what I mean. The past is long gone, which doesn’t change the fact that I am highly qualified to represent your chain. So yeah, I’m in.” After all, this would be a professional deal. Nothing less, nothing more.
Falcone, Carmen. Forbidden Reunion. Kindle Locations (184-205). Kindle Edition.

Aside from not being able to keep their hands off each other, there is also Savannah’s doubts about his intentions. Kylian has much to atone for.

A fun read, with white hot sizzle and great descriptions of the resort and the islands. Now I want a nice tropical drink with an umbrella.

This is a re-release with new cover and branding.Jessica Scott takes us right into the Army in this book. She’s managed to show us the issue of suicide within the military while enhancing the relationships of the people involved. I really have to go back and re-read the previous books. I love Reza and his friendship with Clare but I am fuzzy on those details since it’s been a while since I read these books.

Emily is the new Psychiatrist at the hospital at Fort Hood, she joined the Army much to her parents dismay and really hopes she can make a difference.

Things seem to be unraveling as Reza has two soldiers he needs to keep an eye on. One for his medical discharge and the other for continually reporting to hospital instead of for duty.

Not pulling any punches, Jessica tells it like it is, complicated and frustrating on many levels.

Reza with his alcohol addiction, Emily with her own insecurities we watch them grow not only as a couple but also as the soldiers they are.

I’m going back to the beginning of this series now that I remember why I love them so very much.

Agreeing to be his buddy’s groomsman means he’ll once again reunite with the enchanting and gorgeous, Ava McNamara. Unable to finish what they started last time, he’s more than ready to reignite the spark with Ava.

Torn between exposing a criminal and protecting Ava, he struggles between duty and desire. Now, it’s up to Razor to protect the woman with the haunted eyes and destroy everything she’s ever known. Will they recover from the truth or will Razor’s cut wound her too deeply?

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

Since the day they met Tabon ‘Razor’ Sharp and Avarie ‘Ava’ McNamara have wanted each other, things didn’t happen that first night because Razor was on duty protecting Quinn. Now it’s Quinn and Mercer’s wedding and Razor has the desire to see if the same heat is between them as it was a year ago.

That whole scenario gets shot down when he finds he is going to have to become her bodyguard. The reasons for the protection are complex from the start. First though Razor needs to convince Ava to move in with him.

This is a favorite scene.

Ava remembered Quinn saying that she’d asked Mercer once if he’d take her there, and he’d answered that he’d take her everywhere. She wondered if India would be their only stop, or would they continue traveling? No one deserved a never-ending honeymoon more than Quinn did.

“I’m going to miss you so much,” Ava said, hugging her friend tightly.

“You keep Razor on his toes,” Quinn teased. “Seriously, though, I think the two of you are well-suited,” she whispered.

Ava rolled her eyes, but secretly, she wished it were so.

“Speak of the devil,” said Quinn, winking at Ava when Tabon approached them and stood right behind her.

“Got a minute?” he whispered.

“No.” Ava walked away from him and over to the sidewalk leading to where Mercer had parked Quinn’s Porsche. She stood with the rest of the guests as they fêted the couple with rose petals on their way out.

She turned back around and saw Tabon standing off to the side, studying her.

“What do you want?” she asked. “I thought I made myself clear earlier.”

“I have an offer to make you.”

Ava rolled her eyes and walked away, but he stayed on her heels.

“Just listen. This doesn’t have anything to do with me.”

She stopped and folded her arms in that way that practically pushed her boobs right out of her dress.

He took a deep breath, willing himself to look anywhere but there. “I heard you and your sister were planning on spending a few more days in California.”

She nodded. “Pen and Tara are thinking about it too.”

“I’d like to offer you a place to stay.”

Ava laughed. “With you?”

“No, not exactly.”

“Explain yourself, then.”

Razor smiled. Damn, he liked this woman. “I have a place a couple of hours up the coast, in Cambria. It’s near where Doc’s family lives.”

Ava rolled her eyes.

“Wait,” he said, holding up his hand. “Hear me out. It’s a duplex. Each side sleeps six, although two of you would have to share a bedroom since there are only three.”

“Where would you be?”

“On the other side.”

“Why?”

“Why what?”

“Why are you doing this?”

Razor stepped forward, close enough to tuck an errant strand of hair behind her ear. “Because I want another chance with you.”

“Ah, so there are strings.”

“Absolutely not. I just want to get to know you better, Ava.”

She shook her head. “I’m not interested.”

He cupped her face with his palm. “Please.”

“Don’t do this to me,” she said, shaking her head again.

Razor kissed her forehead. “Please,” he murmured again.

He saw her eyes were closed, and felt her lean into him.

“I need to talk to the girls.”

“Where are they?”

“They went back to the cottage to change.”

“I’ll walk you there,” he said, taking her hand in his.

Ava stopped walking. “Tabon?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Is this just a game to you?”

He put his arm around her shoulders and pulled her close to him. “No, it isn’t. I can’t forget you, Ava, and believe me, I’ve tried.”

“What if I don’t feel the same way about you?”

Razor smiled. “My heart will be broken, broken, but I’ll live. And in the meantime, I’ll get to spend some time getting to know the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes on.”

Ava rolled her eyes. “For now, I’ll consider your offer and talk it over with my sister and our friends. But don’t push it, Tabon.”

He kissed her hand. “I’ll be waiting to hear from you. I’m in Cottage Fourteen.”
Slade, Heather. Razor (K19 Security Solutions). Kindle Locations (584-616). Sparrow Publishing. Kindle Edition.

Now there’s something Ava can do that will become very disconcerting to Razor. She can tell when he’s lying, and she really hates when he keeps things from her. The way he knows she’s mad at him is she calls him Razor instead of Tabon.

I loved meeting Razor’s family and more of the guys, some not yet K19 but will be offered spots. It also looks like Razor’s sister has her eye on one of them. Oh and the whales, lots of whales visible from his home on the Oregon coast.

Intrigue, suspense and drama as things heat up in the case that Ava is a witness in. Razor breaks a lot of rules when it comes to Ava because he is in love with her.

Hold your breath action, tears, laughter, romance and sizzle will have you turning the pages to see what happens next.

Defending Morgan – Mountain Mercenaries Book 3 By Susan Stoker

Defending Morgan
Mountain Mercenaries Book 3
By
NY Times, USA Today & Wall Street Journal
Bestselling Author

Susan Stoker

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Dispatched to the Dominican Republic to rescue a kidnapped child, former Navy SEAL Archer “Arrow” Kane makes a startling discovery: another hostage—Morgan Byrd, a very beautiful and very well-known missing person who disappeared off the streets of Atlanta a year ago. She’s brave, resilient, and unbroken. All Arrow wants to know is why she ended up in a shack in Santo Domingo. All he feels is the desire to protect.

Morgan is done being the victim and is determined to find out who hates her so much that they want her gone—but not dead. Until then, she has Arrow, an alpha stranger who’s offering a warm and safe place to hide. But as the passion between them flares, so does the fear that whoever took Morgan will do anything to get her back. For Arrow, protecting this woman with a mysterious enemy is the most dangerous mission of his life. And it’s worth every beat of his heart.

I’ve decided that Susan Stoker’s mind is a very scary place. I don’t know how she consistently comes up with new and harrowing ideas but they are excellent.

I have been waiting for this book since the tease at the end of Defending Chloe. The accidental discovery of someone who has been missing for a year while rescuing a child taken by her father was surprising to say the least.

Archer and his team have paperwork for the child to return to the states but not for Morgan. Having them split up to avoid detection had me biting my nails even as I could smell the garbage and see the abandoned rundown building they hid in.

Keeping Morgan safe while also gaining information was a challenge Archer accepted without question.

This is a favorite scene.

It took another twenty minutes for Arrow to put everything in place, but when he was finished, he felt satisfied that he’d done what he could to give him and Morgan a window of opportunity to get the hell out of this part of the city undetected.

Crouching down between two buildings, Arrow waited for the first detonator to go off.

When it did, he was pleased to see the two men lurking nearby take off running toward the sound.

As he made his way back toward Morgan, he heard the other explosions he’d set. They went off right on time, hopefully leading the assholes away from his and Morgan’s escape route.

The second he entered the alley where he’d left Morgan, he could feel his body relaxing. He could see the mound of trash looked exactly as he’d left it earlier. Crouching, he whispered, “Morgan? It’s me, Arrow. It’s time to go.”

He brushed off the fish heads and bones and picked up the box he’d put around her head. She peered up at him, her pupils huge in her face and the dark alley.

“Come on, beautiful. Time to go.”

She awkwardly scooted out from under the debris, and when he brushed his fingers against hers, she grabbed hold of his hand as if she’d never let go.

Just then, a louder boom sounded to the west. That was the last explosion he’d rigged, and hopefully the one that would take all attention off where they might be as the thugs tried to figure out what was going on. Arrow had chosen the placements for the explosions carefully. He wasn’t opposed to killing, if it had to be done, but there was no way he was going to hurt someone indiscriminately. He’d used a bit of C-4 next to abandoned buildings, making sure there weren’t any squatters inside, and had used a timer to set them.

They should hopefully bring the police and fire department, and draw the attention of anyone looking for Morgan.

“I take it that’s your handiwork?” Morgan asked.

He could hear the fright, and relief, in her words. He’d been gone longer than he’d planned, but it had been necessary. He’d had to set the small flashbangs and explosions a bit farther out than he’d initially assumed.

“Don’t know what you’re talking about, beautiful. I was just out for a nightly stroll.”

Her teeth flashed white when she smiled.

“Come on. Stay right by me and don’t talk. I’m pretty sure we should be in the clear, but I’m not going to take any chances.”

Morgan nodded and took a deep breath. She looked down at their clasped hands, then he felt her fingers loosening. He was about to protest, but she moved her hand to his waistband once more. Even through his shirt he could feel that her fingers were cool against him. He reached down and moved her hand so it was at the small of his back.

“Hang on, beautiful. There’s a bubble bath calling your name.”

Then, without another word, he set off out of the alley toward the east and safety.
Stoker, Susan. Defending Morgan (Mountain Mercenaries Book 3) (pp. 40-42). Kindle Edition.

For Morgan the return to the US did not ensure her safety. Whoever arranged for her to be taken and kept out of sight in the Caribbean was still out there and the possible suspects were many.

Plenty of hold your breath action, family drama, and romance as the Mountain Mercenaries do what they do best. Protect and find answers.

The twists and turns in this book had me on the edge of my seat with every turn of the page. Morgan and Arrow have a chemistry that will not be ignored and when the whole truth comes out, just wow.

I can’t wait to read Harlow and Black’s book, the tease has me wanting it now.
