“Damn… It never changes.” She couldn’t agree more. Every year they met on Christmas Eve, and every year the chemistry was still there. She didn’t dare ask for more than the one night each year. She wouldn’t risk ruining their arrangement. But, Lord, she wanted to.

Paris is looking forward to Joel’s annual visit. They’d met in a collision of bodies five years ago and spent the hottest night of her life. Every year they meet up on Christmas Eve, but there were rules, they didn’t know anything about each other except their names and wouldn’t search for more.

This year Paris is determined this will be different, she wants more. She wants a real relationship, but he’s broken the rules.

This is a favorite scene.

“How was your year?” he asked. His gaze was intense, his face inches from hers, all his attention on her. No one else existed. Just like every year.

“Not bad. Can’t complain. I worked. Paid bills. Lived life.”

“I bet it was more relaxed since you started working days.” He lifted his bottle to take another sip of beer. She froze. How did he know when she worked?

He stopped moving one second later, his beer halfway to his lips as he stiffened. Finally, he set the bottle back down, his eyes slowly closing as he faced her again. “Shit.”

“How do you know when I work?” she asked as she pulled back a few inches, shaking.

He inhaled slowly, his eyes coming back to hers. “Social media.”

Her mouth fell open. No sound came out. He knows who I am

“I’m so sorry. I broke our rule. I hunted you down.”

“But how? When?” she managed to ask.

“Three years ago.” He winced. “It was a shitty move on my part. I saw your credit card. I couldn’t stop myself from glancing at your last name.”

“Jesus,” she breathed. “That’s so unfair. Why didn’t you say anything?” She drew back another few inches, leaning on the back of the stool, putting as much distance as she could between them. His betrayal shook her.

He winced. “I’m so sorry. It was unfair. You’re right.”

She crossed her arms now. His hands were still on her thighs, and he didn’t pull back. In fact, he gripped her tighter. “All this time you’ve been keeping track of me, and I know nothing about you.”

He nodded.

“So you know I’m a nurse. You know who my friends are. My family. My entire life.”

His face scrunched up again. “Yes.”

Paris glanced away, taking a deep breath. She couldn’t draw in enough oxygen all of a sudden.

His hands slid a few inches closer to her pussy. “Please forgive me, Paris. I never meant you any harm. I wasn’t in a position to share more about myself, or I would have. Once I knew your name, I couldn’t stop myself from keeping up with your life. I… needed to know.”

“Needed to know what?” she asked, her face jerking back to glare at him.

He swallowed. “Mostly that you were still single. That you were mine…” He ended that sentence softly. “At least I liked to pretend you were mine. I still do.”

She gasped. All these years she would have given anything to be his, and all along he was watching her.

“It was shitty of me. I made the rules, and then I broke them.”

Parker – The K9 Files Book 6 by Dale Mayer

The K9 Files Book 6
USA Today Bestselling Author
Dale Mayer

Heading back to Iraq was never in Parker’s plans …

But, when his brother is killed in action, he makes the journey to bring his brother back home to his final resting place.

When one of the K9 War Dogs disappears at the military airport in transit, and all attempts to locate him fails, Parker agrees to investigate during the few days he’s there.

Sandy is making the same journey as Parker—both of their brothers were killed in the same incident. Both brothers had been the best of friends, but this is the first time she’s met Parker. From that initial moment, she realizes something odd is happening in his world. When they find a K9 dog in a rebel stronghold, she’s sucked into a much more dangerous trip than one of compassion and grief.

There’s a reason why the first investigation didn’t turn up anything. … As Parker rattles cages and shakes up a ring of thieves, the bodies start dropping, one by one.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogo google_play_logo_002_002

Parker is going to Iraq to escort his brother’s body home. Saying goodbye is never easy and having been injured himself, he’s made the decision not to re-up.

Sandy’s brother was also killed in the same incident as Parker’s brother. The two men were best friends so it’s not a hardship for her to get to know Parker. A military nurse, she has also decided it’s time to leave the service.

After visiting with some friends at the base, both are restless and Parker invites Sandy to accompany him as he tries to find out what happened to the missing K9 Samson.

This is a favorite scene.

Parker used the ground cover to his advantage, crawling up the hill far away from where he’d seen the light. As he crested the top, he could see a little bit of a rise, and nestled on the other side were several huts and small buildings. A compound with dogs was around the back. He was too far away to see if the shepherd was there, but it would make sense that, if these guys had the shepherd, it would be with the other dogs.

Time was tight. He didn’t want to leave Sandy too long. He’d rather not leave her alone at all. It would be inexcusable to have something happen to her from this decision. But the opportunity was here. And if there was one thing he’d learned from his navy days, it was to make the most of those.

Making a quick decision, he slid down the hill along the back behind the dog compound. As he approached the fence, he saw a big black male shepherd. He gave a slight whistle that he knew the dog should have heard many times in the military. The dog jumped to its feet and came racing to the back fence. Parker gave a second whistle on a different octave, wondering if the dog was capable of jumping to that level. The dog, from a standstill, soared over the fence and ran toward him. Parker had no lead for him, but, carefully maneuvering back the same way he came, Parker slid down the hill on the other side, keeping the dog at his side.

Once they got to the trees, he stopped and hugged the dog. Samson still had a collar on him with his name. Parker crept to the jeep, holding the dog by the collar.

Sandy stared at him. “That easy?”

“It’s never that easy,” he said. Just then shots were fired over his head. He swore and got the dog into the back seat of the jeep.

Before he could head to the driver’s side, Sandy slid over and already had the jeep running. “Get in, get in.”

He jumped into the passenger side. At his feet, he found a piece of rope for a lead for the dog.

Sandy drove like a crazy person, leaving a huge plume of dust behind them. As they hit the small village, everybody was already undercover and hiding, but Parker knew people were coming after them.

“We have to be prepared for them to gain on us,” he cried out as he watched behind them.

yelled, “I’m going as fast as we can.”

He nodded. “After the village we have to find a place to hide. We don’t want to hide close to the village, in case the rebels attack the villagers.”

“No, that’s not happening,” she said. “If we can get to the base or to the airport, that would be the best.”

He nodded. “They were at least prepared for us. I don’t have any weapons. Do you?”

“No,” she said. “I wasn’t issued one. I’m just here as a visitor. Remember?”

“I know. Me too,” he said. “Doesn’t matter what we used to do. It’s what we currently do that matters.” He looked behind them to see a vehicle coming faster than they could drive. “Do you want me to take over?” he yelled.

She shook her head and noticed the vehicle behind them. “I can drive faster.”

“Go cross-country. We should be able to lose them on the other side of the village.”

She didn’t hesitate. He really admired that. She took directions and drove fast.
Dale Mayer. Parker (Kindle Locations 438-464). Valley Publishing Ltd..

Finding the dog and being chased by rebels is only the beginning. They’ve managed to open a whole can of worms and now don’t know who they can trust.

Samson is an awesome dog and is quite the hero in this one. I love how he bonds with both Parker and Sandy.

Lots of action, hold your breath scenes, and a romance that blossoms in the midst of the chaos and grief.

In addition the lead in to the next book has me wanting it now!

Deal Breaker – Heart of the Nebula Book 2 By Heather Long & Rebecca Royce

Deal Breaker
Heart of the Nebula Book 2
USA Today Bestselling Author
Heather Long
Award Winning Author
Rebecca Royce

Destiny declared
I would be queen of a world I’d never known.

Have you ever fallen for four perfect guys only to find out they were aliens and, wait for it, newsflash, so are you? Yeah, me neither. At least until I did. Just when I decided I’d rather skip the ride to the stars for life on Earth, my best friend died in my arms and I went a little crazy.

I woke to darkness.

I used to think getting up to go to work every day and paying my bills was hard work, but nothing could have prepared me for the challenges ahead. While my heart had chosen Reese, Briggs, Goran, and Dalton, vengeance consumed my mind. Vengeance for my best friend, vengeance for the men I loved and vengeance for me—because I hadn’t wanted this fight.

Destiny said I’d be queen?
Fine, then destiny can bite my enemies in the ass.

This is a reverse harem and the authors suggest you always read the forwards in their books. This is the second in a trilogy.

When Khloe wakes in darkness she is totally alone, she can’t even feel her men. Then a bright light flashes and suddenly Dalton is there, her darkness even though she can’t feel him. He reassures her she’s not alone then leaves to secure this ship for them leaving the man responsible for her bestfriend Grace’s death for her.

Once she had taken care of him, she turned her attention to Dalton. He wanted to cut her to bring Reese to them, but couldn’t do it so she does it herself. But Dalton is seriously wounded and she needs to do something to keep him alive until Reese and the others reach them.

This is a favorite scene.

We sat in silence, the buzz of the equipment and the faint rumble of the engines our only soundtrack. “Dalton?”

“Yes, Sweet One?”

“Tell me about Charbodey.”

“What do you want to know?”

“Everything.” I needed to know it all.

He was quiet for a second. “When we get back on our ship, I can do better than tell you about it. We have a program that I can essentially show you a holographic story. We can all go in together, if you like. Show you around.

That way, you can actually see it with your own eyes. Would you like that?”

Intrigued, I nodded. “I think it’s essential, since I think— no, I know— I need to go there and take the throne.”

Dalton stiffened for a second. “Then that is what shall be.” He pressed a kiss over my pulse. “Why do you wish this now? It’s a complete reversal of what you wanted before.”

A sigh pulled from me as I toyed with one of the straps on his jerkin. “They will never stop coming now. Your statement about the collateral damage was 100% correct. And I can’t find revenge sitting on Earth.”

He squeezed my thigh. “All good reasons. But you can have your revenge sitting on Earth if you wish it. Just command me to go back and do it for you.”

“No.” I leaned against his chest to hear his heartbeat. He shifted beneath me then squirmed. I looked up at his face and then pulled away from him a bit. Blood soaked through the front of his jerkin. “Dalton?”

He shook his head. “It’s nothing.”

“It’s obviously not nothing.” I tugged the leather open. Sometime in the course of his saving me and eliminating the others who had been here, he’d been injured. I didn’t know because of the dampening of my chip. The wound seeped blood. He’d been knifed, and he’d been walking around like everything was normal.

He met my gaze before he lowered his eyes. “I have promised not to leave you, and I will not. As we don’t have Reese, or any useable medical supplies on this ship, the best thing to do is just to sit still and wait. I’m strong, Khloe, I’ve been hurt before. I will conserve my energy like we are conserving the engines, and we will wait. It will be okay.” He patted his lap. “Please. Your presence close to me is healing.”

“We should bandage it at least, to stop the bleeding.” Then a thought dawned on me. When we talked about talent, the guys said all people with talent had some version of the same things. They just differentiated in who was better at what. When I’d encountered the Jergen, Dalton healed me.

He pulled out more of the gauze, but he did not carry that much in the way of supplies on him. Even pressing the gauze against the injury seemed to do little; it soaked through with blood almost immediately.

“I can help.” I settled on his lap carefully. “My energy can help you heal or at least just sustain you.”

He shook his head. “I would never presume to take your energy. It is for us to feed you, not the other way around.”

The comment sounded like Goran with his bullshit about not sleeping. Men. They were the same across the universe. “No, you are all starved for me.” When he would have objected again, I glared at him. “Are you mine to command or not?”

“There’s that beautiful temper,” he teased, the lazy note in his voice coaxing, but I refused to be lulled.

“Are you going to obey?”

He inclined his head, though still reluctant. I settled my uninjured hand on his chest, just above his heart and a few inches above the wound. His skin was cool and firm beneath my fingers. Closing my eyes, I took several deep breaths. I refused to harm him. The shift along my skin reminded me of the stars that had spread across me with each bonding, the blue stars for Reese, the purple for Briggs, and finally the green for Goran. The patterns swirled together, rich, verdant clouds of power on my skin, a mark of my loves.

As the power shifted, it coalesced along my arm, the blue shimmer tingling and shining a bit bright. With each pulse of my heart, the power began to trickle and flow until the sensation of pins and needles spread through my fingers. I was sending him doses of my energy as gently as I could. I was hardly an expert, so much of it was new, but I focused on the desire to help him.

When Dalton and I bonded, I imagined this would be easier. If Reese were here, he could do it. He was bound to my darkness; all my guys were bound to each other. But between his injury and our location, Dalton and I couldn’t complete the bond alone. He would never allow himself to be rendered helpless until the others arrived.

Still, I could do this.

He jolted slightly before his obsidian eyes took on an almost dreamy quality, his expression softened. “Khloe.”

“That feels good?” I leaned my head against his shoulder.

“Good is not the right descriptor.” He massaged my nape.

I recognized a few things right away. I wasn’t Reese, and despite his proclamation of being perfectly fine at managing this, Dalton was not going to last if we didn’t get him to Reese.

“I want to see your hologram, but I want to hear you talk about it, too. Please. Tell me about our home.”

Dalton needed to keep talking. I didn’t know how long we’d have to wait for help, but we would make it, even if I had to order him to stay alive every second we did.

The corners of his mouth turned up with the ghost of a smile. “You are my home, Sweet One.”

“Charming,” I complimented him. “And you know what I meant.”

The soft huff of his breath on my cheek as he laughed managed to make me smile. “Yes, I did. Very well, if I cannot persuade you otherwise.”

“No,” I said. “You can’t.” I nestled my cheek to him as he seemed to relax in the chair, and I focused on keeping the flow steady. If I had to drain every drop from myself, I would.

Dalton would not die.
Heather Long; Rebecca Royce. Deal Breaker: Heart of the Nebula Book 2 (Kindle Locations 214-262).

The guys arrive in time to save Dalton, and Briggs removes the dampener and Khloe can once again feel the bonds. Things don’t get really exciting until after she bonds with Dalton although they do get very steamy.

I love the ship and how it does things to please Khloe. The Scepter is still a bit of a mystery as well as powerful. Many surprises are in store for all of them and each page is either steamy or informative.

I really can’t wait for the conclusion to this trilogy!

Alaskan Christmas

Jen Talty

Flynn Wagner sets off to the frozen tundra and the Mistletoe Lodge, prepared for endless stories about her mother. At the lodge, Colton Granger never expected to find the woman who had changed his life forever in high-heeled boots, a winter coat that wouldn’t keep a person warm, and a killer smile that would soon melt his heart.

This is just another delightful read. I can see how hard it would be for Flynn to take this trip to Alaska without her mother. It was something they were going to do together.

The Mistletoe Lodge is run by her Flynn’s mother’s best friend and there had been a bit of plotting going on. Seems they thought Colton and Flynn would be the perfect couple little did they know these two had something going on they hadn’t let on about.

Plenty of ups and downs, some twists and turns, some sizzle and lots of romance.

Guarded By Them
Planet Athion – Between Rebels Book 2
USA Today Bestselling Author
Skye MacKinnon

I never expected to be stranded on an asteroid with four aliens.

It’s a miracle we survived, but just because we’re still alive after the crash doesn’t mean it will stay that way.

One of the Athions almost killed me. I don’t trust him and I don’t think I ever will.

The other Athion seems nice, but every time I look at him, I’m reminded of what his kind did to me.

And the two Trads… well, things are confusing. I think I like them. A lot. But I’m not supposed to fall in love with the enemy.

It would have been easier to have died in the crash. But now I’m determined to survive, no matter the cost.

Kili recognizing he had shot Wren immediately picks her up and runs with her back to his ship. The med machine was their only hope of saving her. As he places her he is also trying to figure out how to play this. By hurting her he has sentenced himself to death, so he instead tries to pin the blame on the Trads.

Of course this doesn’t pan out the way he plans as he gets knocked out by Raf when he enters their ship again. It’s while he’s out cold that Wren wakes and panics. Once out of the machine she insists on going to the Trad ship and Kion complies. Kion learns the ugly truth that Kili had shot Wren, and works with Raf to free Vuk from the debris.

This is a favorite scene.

“Help us with this beam, will you?” The female’s voice was stern.

Together with Raf, she was trying to get a particularly large piece of metal off the other Trad. I hurried over and gently pushed her aside, taking her place.

“You shouldn’t exert yourself,” I chided. “You got shot not long ago.”

“And whose fault is that?” she hissed, reminding me of a wild poomii.

I didn’t reply, but I put my full strength into helping the Trad lift the beam. It shifted, almost slipping from my grip, but luckily Raf remained in control, pushing it to one side and letting it fall to the ship’s floor. We worked silently, removing the debris trapping the other Trad. Wren watched from the sidelines, her hands twitching as if she was having trouble keeping herself from helping.

Her strength was surprising. I’d imagined human females as helpless, gentle creatures who needed to be cared for and protected round the clock. Either this one was an exception or I was completely mistaken.

It would have been Kili’s and my turn next year. Going back to Athion, hopefully finding a female. Now that he’d shot the human, there was no chance of them ever allowing us back. Me, maybe, but we were a team. Right?

Kili groaned and I swirled around. He’d opened his eyes, but he looked weak and disoriented.

The female – Wren, I had to remember to use her name now that I knew it – shrunk back, towards the Trads. I cursed beneath my breath. She was afraid of Kili. She was angry at me. Not exactly a great start.

The Trad on the floor lifted his weapon and pointed it at Kili. I should have stepped in the line of fire, but I remained where I was. Kili met my eyes and frowned.

“I know,” I said gravely. “We all do.”

The frown deepened and a vein popped on his forehead. That only happened when he was either very angry or very upset. I hoped it was the latter.

I took one step forward, then stopped, wringing my hands. “How could you?”

He blinked, then looked away.

“Coward,” Raf spat. “The least you could do is admit your actions.”

“Kili, help us understand,” I begged. Laird, I sounded desperate.

Instead of turning back to me, Kili looked at the female. He held out a hand, as if he wanted her to help him up, or maybe just touch her. I cringed in disgust.

“It was an accident,” he whispered hoarsely. “I wanted to shoot the Trad, but she threw herself on top of him just when I pressed the trigger. I’m sorry, female. I never intended to hurt you.”

“My name is Wren,” she snapped. “And even if you didn’t plan to shoot me, you still tried to kill a defenceless, injured man. How can you stand looking at yourself in the mirror? You’re despicable.”

She pointedly turned her back on him and Raf did the same.

I balled my hands into fists, tension filling my body. I was torn between the two sides. Kili was my friend, but he’d done something terrible. Gritting my teeth, I turned as well and continued with freeing the other Trad. Helping him was more important than wasting my time on a traitor.
Skye MacKinnon. Guarded by them: Between Rebels Book Two (Kindle Locations 352-377). Peryton Press.

The Trad ship is uninhabitable and they all move into the Athion ship. Wren again panics seeing the similarity to the ship she was held captive and beaten on.

Wren is determined to overcome her issues and with the help of Vuk and Raf she begins to succeed. Unfortunately Kili and Kion had already sent an SOS to the Athion fleet.

Vuk and Raf would be sentenced to death for pirating so it’s agreed they will try to contact a pirate ship to get them before the Athion ship can. Wren surprises the guys at every turn with her courage, strength and resilience, traits neither the Athions or Trads thought human women possessed.

Fast-paced and enthralling as they all start working together for the best outcome for their dilemma. Some simmer with Wren and the Trads which only serves to confuse the Athions more.

I can’t wait for the next book.

Defending Everly – Mountain Mercenaries Book 5 by Susan Stoker

Defending Everly
Mountain Mercenaries Book 5
NY Times, USA Today & Wall Street Journal
Bestselling Author

Susan Stoker

As tough as Everly Adams may be, the Colorado Springs SWAT officer is near a breaking point. Her fifteen-year-old half sister, Elise, has disappeared from Los Angeles without a trace, and the window to find her is closing fast. Committed to the search is Mountain Mercenary Kannon “Ball” Black. He and Everly already have a history—of rubbing each other the wrong way.

Still, Everly has to admit the man is heart-stopping. His brash alpha swagger takes her breath away. And most importantly, as a former Coast Guard first responder, Ball has what it takes to bring Elise home.

Nobody’s buying the LAPD’s “runaway” theory. And the fear that Elise is the victim of a human trafficking ring is a gut-punch that Everly and Ball can’t ignore. If only the trail were that clear cut. Because the one they’re following is more insidious and intimately dark than they could have imagined.

Now as the bond between Everly and Ball grows stronger, so does the heat. And as the stakes rise, so does the danger.

Kannon ‘Ball’ Black has more than a few issues being partnered with a woman. He had a woman trainee in the Coast Guard and another had ripped his heart out.

Even though Everly is a trained SWAT officer, she beside herself with worry. Her fifteen year old sister Elise has gone missing and she turns to the Mountain Mercenaries for help finding her. She overheard Ball’s comments about a woman being involved in the case and wasn’t exactly happy he was the one assigned.

As they work to find her sister Ball finds his opinion changing as he realizes how really wrong he’s been.

This is a favorite scene.

Ball watched through the glass as her gait changed from the no-nonsense “cop walk” to a more seductive swagger. Her hips were lush, and the way the jeans hugged her ass should be illegal.

Shaking his head and smiling to himself, Ball turned to have a look around the outside of the building—and ran right into someone standing way too close to him.

The man immediately kneed him in the groin, and Ball folded in half, excruciating pain pulsing through his body.

Taking advantage of his momentary incapacitation, the man grabbed an arm and forced him around to the side of the building.

Ball struggled to get his wits about him. The asshole who’d kneed him pushed hard, and Ball fell to his knees in the gravel parking area. He was immediately on his feet again, but not before two other men grabbed him by the arms and held him between them.

Ball was taller than the three men, but waves of pain were still shooting from between his legs, and the man who’d attacked him first was able to get in two punches before Ball came to his senses. In a way, the hits to his face helped redirect the pain he was feeling away from his balls to his head.

Using some of the moves he’d learned in the Coast Guard, as well as those his fellow Mountain Mercenaries had taught him, Ball fought back.

But after a minute, he was dismayed to realize he was still losing the fight. Three against one wasn’t exactly fair, but the men didn’t care. They hadn’t demanded anything of him, and Ball had no idea why they’d targeted him.

Until one of the men who’d been waiting around the corner of the store said, “Knock him out already so we can get the girl!”

Fuck that. They weren’t getting their hands on Everly.

“Fuck that!” a feminine voice said from nearby, and before Ball could warn her away, Everly was in the thick of things.

Now that he wasn’t fighting three men at one time, it wasn’t long before Ball had knocked one of the assholes unconscious.

He turned to assist Everly—and instead could only stare. The man who’d kicked him in the groin was moaning in pain on the ground, and she had the other guy in a headlock. She was shorter than he was by two or three inches, and yet he was still bent backward, totally under her control.

A man wearing khakis, a polo with the name of the gas station on it, and a ball cap ran around the corner. “The cops are on their way . . . Holy shit!”

Ball had to give it to the young man. He collected himself and said, “I’ve got some rope in the back!” He then turned and ran around the corner, presumably to get the rope so they could secure the punks who’d attacked them.

Ball couldn’t help himself. He walked up to the first man—who was now on his hands and knees, looking like he was thinking about getting up—and kicked him in the balls, just as the man had done to him.

The man fell to his side, crying out with pain.

Satisfied, Ball turned to Everly. She’d effectively cut off the guy’s oxygen enough to knock him out and was lowering him to the gravel.

So many feelings and thoughts were running through his mind in that moment.

“Are you all right?” she asked.

Ball nodded but didn’t say anything.

Her eyes narrowed. “Are you sure?”

“I’m sure,” he said, after a beat. “Thank you.”

Everly nodded, and then turned to make sure the men she’d incapacitated weren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Stoker, Susan. Defending Everly (Mountain Mercenaries) (pp. 57-59). Kindle Edition.

In the center of this is Elise who was kidnapped, a teenager wanting a bit more freedom but her life is just a bit different because she is deaf. However not so much that she doesn’t feel the same things as any other teen.

Now this book sent me through a wave of several different emotions. From laughter at Everly’s Grandmother’s antics, to various versions of tears. Then there is the slow steady relationship that grows between Everly and Ball. There’s also a bond that is forming with Ball and Elise.

I couldn’t put this book down as this story unfolds. Full of love, tears, laughter, angst and so much more!

From The Dirty Dozen: MC Edition – Royally Taken – Royal Sons MC Book 2 by Elle Boon

Royally Taken

USA Today Bestselling Author
Elle Boon

Ever wonder what it’s like

See what it’s like to be thrust into the dangerous world of an MC, where brotherhood and loyalty are more than just words.

These eleven authors will have you captivated and wishing to wear one of their MC patches with each word you read.

Warning: These stories have adult content. Some also contain graphic violence and dark emotional scenarios which may trigger some readers. Proceed with caution. You have been warned.

I am only reviewing Royally Taken – by Elle Boon here. I am still reading the others and will do a complete review of the Anthology when I am finished with all of them.

He’s the protector. Sometimes he walked a fine line between right and wrong, but make no mistake, when shit goes south, he’s the one you’d want to have your back.

I fell in love with this series in the first book Royally Twisted. Now the tale continues as the Royal Sons take on the rescue of Ayesha’s sister from a human trafficking ring. Little did they know they would be getting some help from an unexpected source.

Kailani Travino had been planning her escape from her father and brother ever since she turned eighteen, and she wasn’t going to let them hurt their latest acquisition either. Of course that makes her escape a bit more difficult and dangerous.

This is a favorite scene.

“Are you seeing what I’m seeing?” Traeger asked, wondering if his eyes were playing tricks on him. Surely he didn’t just watch two women scale their way down the side of the mansion. Well, small in the sense it wasn’t a Kennedy size mansion. Fuck, this mission just became a little more complicated.

“The first girl looked like the one Keys gave us information on. The other one, I didn’t recognize. What do we do with her, boys?” Digger asked.

Traeger looked at the other man. “We grab ‘em both and figure out the what the fucks after.”

They’d driven down with Digger and Coal, both men driving their cage vehicles. While the MC preferred their bikes, when they went on a mission, they used what they needed, and a cage or a vehicle on four wheels was usually needed. Digger drove the lead SUV, a tricked out armored Escalade that fit eight, while Coal drove a van that could hold a dozen, and also housed a state of the art computer system.

“Sounds solid to me,” Duke agreed.

“My facial recognition program says one of the females is the sister of the fuck who took the girl we’re here to rescue, which by the way, it appears she’s helping our target escape,” Keys explained through the speaker system of their vehicle, letting them all in on what he’d found.

“We better move. I see movement on the upper floors. I think the fucks in question know their girl is missing.” Traeger opened the door, moving before he’d finished speaking, blending into the waning night. There were a few things he was excellent at—fucking, shooting any type of weapon with accuracy, and blending into his surroundings. Even at over six feet two, he knew how to find the shadows and become one with them. He made sure his rifle was close just in case he needed it as he moved toward his targets, keeping his ears peeled for any indication that the men from inside had come out. Thanks to Keys, they had already disabled all the alarms inside and out, so even if the women inadvertently would’ve triggered one, none would go off.

He and King moved like a team, both silent and deadly when needed, each of them taking a route toward the women that was sure to intercept wherever they planned to go, before they had a chance to get there. King motioned for him to stay closer to the house, while he moved farther ahead in case there was trouble waiting in front of the women. From the intel they’d gotten on the drive down, there shouldn’t be, but Traeger knew it only took a moment for shit to hit the fan. In cases of human trafficking, none of them liked to gamble with the lives of women or children, or in this case a teen girl.

Flood lights began lighting up the front yard, making it nearly impossible for him to find his shadowy spots, but he didn’t change his course, staying low, picking up his pace until he finally reached the two women at the same time as King. His arms came up and around the older of the two, his hand clamping over her mouth, silencing her scream.

“Sssh, I’m not here to hurt you. Well, that is unless you’re part of your brother’s shit, then all bets are off,” he growled.

Traeger held her slender body against his, feeling her instant surrender against his chest.

She shook in his arms for a moment, then relaxed as if all the fight went out of her.

“We need to move. Keys says there’s movement inside and lots of it,” King said, his deep voice barely above a whisper.

Both girls whimpered but between the both of them, neither could say anything.

“Your sister’s looking for you. If you’re a good girl, I’ll have you back with her by sunup,” King assured the young girl.

Traeger’s woman stiffened in his arms. “What’s the matter, you upset we’re taking away your money maker?” he asked, venom lacing his words.

The younger female in King’s arms squirmed, trying to get away. “She saved me, you asshat,” she muttered out between King’s fingers.

Traeger raised his brows but didn’t say a word. “We need to move. You got your target under control Pres, or you need a little assistance?”

King raised one brow, his eyes, from what Traeger could see reflected from the moonlight, clearly telling him his friend, and President of the Royal Sons, would be paying him back for that remark. Traeger gave a low chuckle, figuring they’d both need to blow off some steam when they got back to the club, unless they found another way to expend the pent up energy. The woman he held moved against him, reminding him of another way he could blow off steam, a much more pleasurable way for sure. However, fucking a woman who had clear ties to one of the largest drug cartels on the west coast, one that also dabbled in human trafficking, was a sure way to wind up dead, or in jail. Neither option held much appeal.

“You two done playing? ‘Cause you got about ten fuckers coming in hot right behind you. I can give you a distraction, but you’re not gonna make it back to us the same way you went in. Find another way, and we’ll meet you at plan B.”
Boon,Elle. Royally Taken. The Dirty Dozen: MC Edition. Kindle Locations (3027-3069). Kindle Edition.

There is plenty of suspense and action as Traeger ‘Trigger’ takes Lani to safety. Well sort of.

A page turning read that may contain triggers. I couldn’t stop turning the pages as this story unfolds with lots of emotion, pain, romance and sizzle.

According to Plan – Sutton Capitol Book 8 by Lori Ryan

According To Plan
Sutton Capitol Book 8
NY Times & USA Today Bestselling Author
Lori Ryan

He can’t trust the people who should have his back…

Pressured by his boss to connect with his new team, the last thing Kaeden O’Shea needs is a woman in the way—one who clearly has something to hide. But his instincts have him on high alert and he can’t shake the idea that he needs to ride to her rescue.

Running, hiding, and planting misleading clues means Joy Wilson doesn’t dare let anyone get close. Not even the man who tempts her at every turn…because there’s too much at stake. Too much she has to protect.

Two missions collide, and all bets are off.

Kaeden tends to micro-manage everything he doesn’t do himself. Now his boss hands him the planning of the company retreat and team-building. Most of the work has already been done, but he has an on site liaison and two Hospitality interns to handle the running. Of course he thinks he has everything covered.

Joy is his liaison with the hotel and she gets a kick out of his trying to run the show. Kaeden doesn’t handle any twists or changes well, but somehow Joy manages to get under his skin. She has secrets and he wants to help her, but first he has to gain her trust.

I loved this book, Kaeden goes through so much growth and the relationship he starts with Joy is both sizzling and sweet.

Lots of giggles, plenty of fun, some action plus a sizzling romance.

The excerpt below is a favorite scene, don’t forget to read it.

5 Contented Purrs for Lori!

Joy watched the group unload outside Crepes a la Carte and was glad when none of them looked put out by the long line that was already halfway down the block. The place was actually a cart not a restaurant, though they did have a small store front option on the other side of the street. She’d already told some of them they might want to cut through the alley that led to the storefront to see if there was a shorter line there, but they all seemed happy to get into line at the cart.

She saw Mia who she’d met earlier that morning talking to a woman she hadn’t met yet but thought was named Sarah if she went by process of elimination and the list of people she’d been given by her boss.

She was beginning to learn which kids went with which parents but it wasn’t easy. They all seemed like they parented each other’s kids as easily as they did their own, making it all the more confusing.

Jack’s auburn-haired wife, Kelly, smiled at Kaeden. “Crepes were a great idea. You’re not bad at this trip planning thing.”

Joy stifled a laugh as Kaeden glanced her way before brushing off the compliment and telling Kelly it had been Joy’s suggestion.

Kelly beamed her way. “Any fan of crepes is a friend of mine.”

Jack, Andrew, and Chad came up to the group just then and Joy’s recollection of Jack being Kelly’s husband was confirmed when he kissed her temple.

“Kel, it looks like there’s a small park a couple of blocks down the street. We’re going to take the kids down there while you guys wait in line. If you don’t mind waiting?”

Kelly sent him a look that said he was crazy. “Do I mind getting to hang with my girlfriends in line while you take the kids off our hands?”

Jack laughed and squeezed her close for a minute, dropping another kiss to her cheek before he and the others began herding the kids toward the park.

Kaeden watched them go. “Don’t you need to get their orders?”

Now Kelly directed her look toward him. “The kids will take anything sweet and the men will take anything so long as it’s food. Besides, crepes. There’s no way to go wrong with them. At all.”

Joy had to try to cover her mouth with her hand in a half-assed casual way to suppress her laugh now. Kaeden just didn’t get crepes, but clearly the women in front of him did. There was the blonde Joy thought was Jill and another blonde she thought was Jennie, but it was entirely possible she was switching the two. She had only met them that morning.

“Tell me you’ve had crepes.” That was maybe-Jill talking, hands on her hips as she looked at Kaeden.

Maybe-Jennie joined in. “Crepes are ah-may-zing. Gooey and light and perfect. The reviews for this place say they’re incredible.” She put a hand on her stomach as they inched forward in the line. “My stomach is going to revolt if I don’t give it one soon.”

Samantha walked up to the group and nudged maybe-Jill. “Men never get the draw of a good crepe until they’ve had one. It’s just above their heads.”

Kaeden snorted and all the women swung their heads comically in his direction. Joy lost the ability to hold in her laughter. She couldn’t help it.

He pointed in her direction. “No I-told-you-sos. I get it. They like crepes.”

“Love,” the women said in unison.

Kelly said, “Like luuuuv love.”

The women ended up chatting together while they all moved up in line and Kaeden and Joy were left paired together while the line crept forward.

She tried to ignore the fact that to keep half the sidewalk clear for pedestrians he was standing close enough to her that their arms were almost brushing. Close enough to feel that heat of anticipation at the almost contact.

“You look like you’re not going to hold it in.”

Joy shook her head. “What? The I-told-you-so? It’s staying in me just fine.” She could only grin at him as he scowled at her and Joy realized how good it felt to laugh, to be playful. And how surprising it was that it was happening with this man.

She hadn’t had this kind of laughter in a while and she wouldn’t have it again for a long time. Not when she had to move on soon. There would be nothing but strain and unease and the insecurity of trying to find a new situation for at least a month or two. She remembered when she thought her job at a tech firm was stressful. It was nothing compared to living in a car or a seedy motel and wondering if you’d be safe through the night.

None of the places she’d holed up in the last two years had been like this and she doubted wherever she went to next would be either.

Kaeden cut into her bleak thoughts. “So what kind should I get?”

They were getting closer to the front of the line now and Joy looked at the sign with the list of options. “The monte cristo and the lemon souffle are my favorites. Strawberry shortcake is really good too, though. But the women were right. You can’t go wrong with any of them.”

Samantha shouted back an “amen” to Joy before stepping up to place her order.

Kaeden laughed but he nodded. “Alright, I’ll get those ones.”

“What do you mean, those ones? I was giving you choices not a list. You can’t eat three crepes.”

His brows went up. “I thought these things were gold. Why wouldn’t I eat three of them?”

“They’re big.”

Twenty minutes later Joy was still shaking her head at him but now it was because she was watching him take the last bite of his third crepe.

“So you liked them?” she asked.

“I think the word you’re looking for is luuuuuuv,” he said drawing the word out like Kelly had.

Zeke – Heroes at Heart Book 7 By Maryann Jordan

Heroes at Heart Book 7
USA Today Bestselling Author
Maryann Jordan

The true measure of a man
is not in the mistakes he makes…

but in how he handles those mistakes.

Zeke left the Army and joined his brother’s bar, Grimm’s, as a bouncer before convincing Zander to open a restaurant next door. Now, as co-owner of Grimm’s Bar and Grill, he shared his success by working as a cook at the local homeless shelter.

One night, he sees a woman seeking shelter and is captivated by the smile she offers when she is in such need.

Cynthia works at Prince Hotel as a cleaner but lost her housing when she had excessive medical bills. With Zeke’s help, she manages to get back on her feet and discover love with the handsome man.

At work, things are looking up when the owner takes an interest in her and offers her a job as his assistant. But all things that glitter are not gold, and Cynthia discovers that her life with Zeke is the true fairy tale.

A Heroes at Heart novel based loosely on the fairy tale, Cinderella.
Themes, language, and adult situations are similar to an R-rated movie. For 18+ years.

I loved the way this book started with a look into the past when Zeke first arrives at Miss Ethel’s. It progresses into his school years and his love for the Cinderella story, all of them not just the ‘Disney’ version.

In the present we see Zeke and Zander as they prepare to venture into opening a second Grimm’s. They’ve found the perfect location for it and things will start moving quickly.

After announcing their news at dinner at Miss Ethel’s Zeke hangs back from leaving sensing she wants to speak with him. I love Miss Ethel’s wisdom and this is one of my favorite scenes.

If you are reading this series you will recall Asher is very active with the homeless, particularly one shelter. Zeke has made it a habit to prepare breakfast at this shelter before heading into Grimm’s for meal prep there. After visiting with Miss Ethel, Zeke heads to the shelter to see if he needs to bring in anything for the next day’s breakfast.

He held back as Miss Ethel took him by the hand, and they walked over to two of the rockers on the front porch. Making sure she was settled first, he moved to the rocker next to her, finding the movement to be soothing.

“I could tell you wanted to talk to me,” he said, his lips curving into a smile.

She took a moment as though gathering her thoughts, her gaze drifting out over her yard before moving back to his face. “I’m very proud of you Zeke,” she said.

Her words soothed through him as they always had, and he knew that pleasing her would always bring that kind of satisfaction.

“I’m proud of all my boys,” she continued. “The men you are. The success you have.”

He held her gaze and said, “You do know that we owe it all to you, Miss Ethel?”

She waved her hand dismissively in front of her and said, “Oh, posh. I don’t deny that I’ve had a hand in helping each of you, but the brotherhood you formed has given each of you individual as well as collective strength.”

Agreeing, he said, “Yes, and you’re the one that gave us that brotherhood. You created a family out of a bunch of boys who didn’t know anything about family.”

They were quiet for a moment, and he added, “I wasn’t sure it would work for me.”

Her face scrunched slightly, the wrinkles settling deeper. “I don’t understand what you mean.”

“You got the others when they were much younger. Me? I was already thirteen years old. An angry thirteen-year-old. I could have already been beyond help.”

She continued rocking and did not immediately refute his statement. Finally, she said, “There was already something in you, learned from your parents. You know, we sometimes learn how to act from our parents, but we also learn how we don’t want to act. By the time you came to me, yes, you were angry. Angry at life, and angry at your mom for leaving, and your dad for not controlling his temper. But unlike your dad, you didn’t turn that anger outward on others. You had already learned to control it, and I just simply gave you a good family to focus on.”

They continued rocking for a moment, and then she finally spoke again. “I worry that you’re taking on too much work.”

This time he grinned, those words being what he expected to hear from her. “We all work hard,” he said. “You always worked hard.”

“Yes, but your brothers have found that there’s more to life than work. They found love as well.”

Ruefully shaking his head back and forth, he said, “I’m not opposed to that, Miss Ethel. I figure I’ll know it when it hits me.”

With that, her laughter burst forth, and she said, “It’s true. Sometimes we don’t always know when love comes our way. I just hope you’ll be open to it when the opportunity presents itself.”

“I’m no prince,” he said. “I’m just a hard-working man, and it’ll take a special woman to see that.”

“Your brothers found it. You’ll find it, too.” She smiled then said, “Remember Robert Browning? ‘I was made and meant to look for you and wait for you—”

“And become yours forever,” they finished together, his smile matching hers.

She spoke with such conviction, and considering she always seemed to know things, he could not dismiss her words. They continued to rock in companionable silence for a few more minutes before he finally said, “I’m going to head on out, Miss Ethel. I want to go by the homeless shelter this evening to see if there’s anything special I needed to get for the breakfast service tomorrow.”

He assisted her to stand, then wrapped his arms around her and felt hers wrap around his waist in return. She was not quite as tall as she used to be, her frame slightly thinner. But her hug contained the same fierceness of love and protection as it had many years ago.
Maryann Jordan. Zeke: Heroes at Heart (Kindle Locations 393-423).

If you are reading this series you will recall Asher is very active with the homeless, particularly one shelter. Zeke has made it a habit to prepare breakfast at this shelter before heading into Grimm’s for meal prep there. After dinner and a chat with Miss Ethel, Zeke heads to the shelter to see if he needs to bring in anything for the next day’s breakfast.

Cynthia arrived at the shelter late, and drenched from the rain and nervous. She had never been to a shelter, but it was much safer than the alternatives. When Zeke moves to help her with her bags, he realizes he’s a stranger would be scaring her, but there’s an attraction he can’t refute.

I love the way this story progresses, it’s a slow building romance where trust needs to be built, and leads to some sizzling heat.

Cowboy State of Mind – Tarnation, TX Book 4 by Rhonda Lee Carver

Cowboy State of Mind
Tarnation, TX Book 4
Rhonda Lee Carver

When life is on the line
you learn to live…
and never miss a dance.

Dr. CC Peladora never expected to ask a stranger to father her child, but neither did she think she’d be diagnosed with a chronic disease. With a failed marriage and a busy career, love is the last thing on her priority list, but she wants more than anything to experience motherhood before it’s too late. When she hears through the grapevine that Adam Colt, the sexy, mysterious son of Buzz Colt, must marry to meet the stipulations of his father’s will, she sees an opportunity that won’t come along again. And living like there’s no tomorrow, this is her time to get what she wants…

Adam just happened to be sitting on a bar stool in a local honky tonk when the spunky woman he’s been fantasizing about for months walks in and turns his world upside down. She offers to give him what he needs, an arranged marriage, for something she wants desperately. A child. No doubt he wants to kiss her, but marry her? And give her a child and then disappear from Tarnation forever? His father’s stained blood might run through Adam’s veins, but a real cowboy would never leave his kin. But in his journey to prove that he’s nothing like Buzz, he finds more than he ever bargained for…and a forgiveness he never expected would come.

A secret marriage. Vulnerable hearts. Off-the-charts chemistry and small-town romance will have CC and Adam proving that a spirited vet and an alpha cowboy can find love in the most unlikely places.

I think my jaw dropped to the floor as I started reading this. CC makes no bones about what she wants from Adam and lets him know she knows the stipulations of his father’s will.

This is one of my favorite scenes.

“I WANT YOUR sperm.”

Adam Colt looked from his full shot glass of Tequila to the scuffed tips of cowgirl boots, up the length of tight fitting jeans with frayed holes in the thighs, to firm breasts under an off the shoulder blue blouse. Fluttering his gaze upward he met the hazel eyes of CC Peladora who stood close enough that he could see the scattering of freckles over her tanned cheeks. He almost went sliding off the barstool in surprise. Could she be real or a figment of his alcohol induced imagination? He’d been thinking about the beauty long and hard and, suddenly, she appeared, making his head spin. Swallowing against the constriction in his throat, he asked, “What did you say?”

“I think you heard me,” she said in a soft southern twang..

“No, I don’t think I did.” He pushed his Stetson further up on his forehead and propped one boot on the leg of the stool beside him. She gave a toss of her hair over one bare shoulder and tilted a flared hip, her pensive gaze searching his face. Over the last few months they’d started working together more at the Grinning Spurs Ranch and gotten to know each other pretty well, maybe even shared a mutual attraction, but neither had acted on the feeling.

“I want your sperm.”

Adam laughed and scanned the crowded honky tonk looking for his dumbass brothers. Since they were kids they played tricks on one another, each trying to get one up on the funny scale. This would definitely be a trick he could see one of them playing on him. Somehow one of them figured out Adam had been watching CC a little too closely.

“Which one of them put you up to this?”

“Which one? I don’t have a clue what you’re talking about.” He didn’t see one sliver of humor in her expression.

What the hell? She couldn’t be serious…could she?
Rhonda Carver. Cowboystateofmindfinal1 (Kindle Locations 107-121). Kindle Edition.

Even though CC was pretty much offering the solution to everything, Adam has reservations. He wants more than just a marriage to solve the problem and he certainly wasn’t sure about the whole baby thing. He doesn’t want to be like his father, deserting a child to satisfy some selfish whim really isn’t in his plans.

This is a fun read, with plenty of indecision on Adam’s part and plenty of persuading on CC’s part. I loved the way this plays out and there was so much emotion, bringing tears to my eyes.

I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
