Not the size to blend in anywhere …
Not that he cared …
Beau heads to Alaska to a cult that kidnaps women to flesh out its numbers. One woman in particular has gone missing. When her father calls in a favor, Beau is asked to fit into the cult community. Only his style is guns blazing, and he doesn’t bother counting the dead …
Danica was late for her college class when a hood was thrown over her head, and then she was tossed into the back of a vehicle. Days later, she wakes up on a dirt floor of a cell with only a grate above her head. But she’ll take it as she’s nothing if not innovative. As soon as she escapes her prison, she runs into the brick wall that’s Beau. He’d good at giving orders. She’s not so good at following them …
With dozens of lives at stake in a sex-trafficking scheme, neither Beau nor Danica had expected it would be action all the way for them as they battle to free other women and to stay alive–together.
Beau gets his own mission pretty much on the tail of the last one with Jax. It’s Jax on the other end of phone this time around. Of course Jax won’t tell him who his back-up is, but he would meet up with him in Alaska.
Danica had been taken on her way to class, she wakes in an underground cell with a grate giving light and air. As the days passed with no sign of rescue, and her hands and feet still tied she knew she had to find a way out and gets creative to release them.
Beau’s back-up is Asher, another SEAL buddy one he knew would be an asset once they got to the compound where they believe Danika is being held.
Their job was about to get easier, yet harder when Beau finds Danika.
This is a favorite scene.
So far, she’d been very good at following orders, but the other woman had bolted, and he wouldn’t forget that easily. If he’d been just a few minutes earlier, he might have kept her close.
It also made him worry that Nania was a trap. Although Danika had said no, what were the chances that maybe Nania had gone back, knowing that the other men were there, and had reported Danika missing? If that was the case, the men wouldn’t let up anytime soon. It also meant that Beau had made the right decision by not getting to both escapees earlier because, if Nania didn’t know about his presence, the cult men would think they were just looking for Danika. And that was a whole different story.
Beau could see one of the men coming closer, but the guy moved as if he wasn’t expecting to see somebody out here. He strolled along, casually looking to see if somebody was here. As he swept past the fence about fifty feet in front of them, he didn’t even scan the bushes where they hid. That was good for Beau’s sake but not so good for the quality of sentries that the cult used. But then they probably had no idea of true security.
Everybody liked to think that they were completely safe, but they really didn’t understand how easy it was to penetrate even the most secured compounds. Especially now Beau appreciated how he’d come with such a small team. Every time you added another person, the risks went up exponentially.
Just then Asher tapped his comm, and Beau knew he’d reached the other sentry post. He tapped twice to let Beau know he was okay and then quickly tapped out a message, saying one of the cult men was heading in Beau’s direction.
Take him out, Asher tapped. Let’s knock down the numbers.
And with that, Beau waited. He could feel Danika shifting uneasily at his side. Just knowing that the men were coming closer and closer sent her nerves into overdrive. He grabbed her fingers and squeezed them gently. She immediately shuffled closer, until she almost leaned against him, welcoming his body heat and the security of knowing that she wasn’t alone.
He couldn’t imagine what she had planned to do when she got through that fence. Likely she didn’t have a plan. She hadn’t a clue how far away from home she was. His plan would have been to get free and just to keep on going. But out here, chances were good a bear would have caught Danika first because she would have been so weak that she couldn’t hide or fight off a threat. Definitely making her an easy dinner for the next predator looking for a meal.
He gently whispered, “It’ll be okay. Stay calm.”
She shook her head. “Nothing will ever be okay again,” she said.
Two men now walked closer, both of them talking. “No way she came out here.”
“Well, last we heard, she was still missing.”
“Yeah, that’s Lamont again,” one of the guys said. “You know what he’s like. He’s an alarmist.”
“Well, they’ll check all the women now.”
The other guy said, “Good, I need some sleep.”
“If you weren’t so busy enjoying all the women,” the other guy scoffed, “you’d get some sleep.”
“Hey, the sex is there for the taking. Why the hell wouldn’t I?”
“I know,” he said. “I have to admit, I’m enjoying that aspect of this job too.”
“But it’s still just the job, isn’t it? It’s not like we’re part of the cult itself. We’re not sucked into that whole mind-set.”
“No, we’re hired to protect them. We run the girls. That’s about it.”
“But pretty damn decent benefits from the cult members. Don’t touch the prisoners, but the others are there for the taking.” Then the men’s voices faded into the distance as they left the area. The last thing Beau heard was one guy say, “This is a lost cause. Nobody’s out here.”
As soon as they drifted away, she sagged slightly, and he could see a little bit of her tension easing.
“Jesus,” was all she could say.
He nodded. “It’s hard to see the underbelly of society.”
“Not just see it,” she said, “but be a part of it.” She stared up at him, and he could see her lip trembling. “Could you …” She fell silent.
He leaned forward, keeping an eye on the men still moving around them. “Could I what?”
She hesitated. He cocked an eye at her. She shrugged. “It doesn’t matter.”
“Don’t say that,” he said. “Tell me.”
“Could you hold me for a moment?” she asked, the words coming out in a rush. “Just for a moment, to let me know that I’m okay.”
Instantly he tugged the tiny woman into his arms and crushed her against his chest, holding her close. He could feel the tremors in her spine. Not just her hands but her whole being was completely racked with fear. Noticing that, he tried to infuse her soul with some of his own reassurance. He’d seen this response before, but he’d never been in a position to do anything about it. Well, right now he could.
And he did. He cuddled her closer.

Now Danica is not very good at staying where she’s told to stay, and being armed helped. She wasn’t going to be captured again or let anything happen to the men who just showed up to get her out of here.
Fast-paced with plenty of hold your breath action, some tears, lots of emotion and a simmer to sizzle romance under some very difficult conditions.
I can’t wait for the next book in this series!
