review-fall-cornucopia

I fell totally in love with this series from reading the duet. Then I totally missed the release of Brody. Now I’ve read the fourth book and have to go back before the next one comes out.

This book opens with Kyle and his partner Alex going to the scene where three bodies were found in the early morning hours. It occurred in the ‘Cardboard Cottages’ section of Hope City. The homeless make their home in cardboard creations and more recently some actual tents have popped up courtesy of local churches.

The real story for Kyle begins a week prior to the events in the first chapter. Although it was the end of that chapter that kept me turning the pages to see what was what.

This is a favorite scene.

“I’ll take you up on that offer and, dude, mini-you is a great kid. Sorry I couldn’t stay longer.” He jerked his head to the side toward Alex and added, “We had a call out.”

“No worries. I’m glad you made it over.”

“Hell, I wouldn’t have missed it. You were getting pretty close to Amber. That on again?” Brody had reconnected with a girl from his past and they were all shocked to find out that he had a son.

“It is.”

Brody’s words held a hint of regret, and he met his friend’s intense gaze. “Be careful.”

“Man, not you, too,” Brody huffed.

Shaking his head, Kyle chuckled. “You’re my best friend. Yeah, I’m going to tell you to be careful, but I’m also going to tell you to go for it because that woman and that kid are worth the effort. I tried to kick your ass into going to see her after the accident.”

“Yeah, I remember. Wish like hell I’d taken your advice then.”

Brows raised, Kyle shot a glance over to Alex before turning his attention back to Brody. “So… you’re saying…”

Brody huffed. “Fine. You were right.”

“Damn, that hurt, didn’t it?” Just as he was finished ragging on Brody, a flash of color to the side caught his attention.

“It did. I’m leaving now.” Brody tossed a wave to Alex and turned toward his vehicle.

Kyle glanced around, his brow furrowed. “Yeah, okay.”

“What did you see?”

“Someone that doesn’t belong, which makes me edgy. Let’s go to the Celtic Cock this week. You owe me a drink or ten for being right.”

“Deal, take care.”

Focus now zeroed in on what captured his attention, he tossed a wave toward Brody and said, “Alex, circle around to the other side and see if you see that woman who just passed by over there. She’s either fuckin’ nuts if she thinks this is a place to cross through, or there’s something in that backpack that we need to check out.”

It was not hard to follow the girl as she skirted around the outside of the Cardboard Cottages. Her red sweatshirt hoodie stood out like a beacon. Dark jeans and flat leather shoes were another giveaway that she didn’t belong. As he approached from behind, it was evident the small backpack slung over one shoulder was a leather purse, and his suspicions heightened at the idea of what she carried in that bag.

Another gust of wind snapped the hoodie back, allowing tendrils of long, honey-blonde hair escaping a sloppy bun to whip about her head. Her steps hastened and he glanced ahead, seeing a small car parked near the end of one of the exit ramps leading back up to the highway.

She held a cell phone in one hand, talking low and steady, and didn’t appear to hear him approach as he gained ground. “Stop! Police.”

She screeched as her hand jerked up when she whirled around, eyes wide, shooting pepper spray wildly into the air. Her aim sucked, but before he could duck, the wind whipped it around both of them. It wasn’t a direct hit, but it was enough that he felt the sting in his eyes and burn in his throat.

“God dammit!” he yelled, rushing toward her. Their bodies collided, and as she flailed about, he wrapped his arms around her and maneuvered her to the ground. “Stay down!”

He had not taken a direct hit from the irritant, but his eyes teared and he sucked in a ragged breath. He pinned her to the ground with one hand on her back and swiped his hand over his eyes and nose, blinking to clear his vision. Hearing rapidly approaching footsteps, he looked up and saw Alex approaching, weapon drawn.

The girl continued to wiggle and sputter, and he flipped her over. A streak of dirt mixed with a trail of tears on her cheek marred her otherwise flawless complexion. Coughing, trying to catch her breath, she blinked rapidly. Finally, her eyes stayed open, and he gasped when staring into the familiar green orbs.

For a few seconds, the underbelly world of Hope City disappeared as the two stared at each other. “You?” he growled, recognition hitting him, barely aware that she had uttered the same word in equal disbelief.
Maryann Jordan. Kyle – ARC copy – not for sale: Hope City (Kindle Locations 151-184).)

Now the reason Kyle knows this girl becomes clear in the following chapters. It seems Kyle made a bit of mistake, not getting a phone number or even a last name from the woman he thoroughly enjoyed one night with. She was gone when he woke, and it seems he can’t get her off his mind. Even going back to the Celtic Cock, where they met, to see if the owner knows who she was.

Kimberly has the same problem and it’s as she’s delving into a new project that she sees Kyle again. He’s not happy about the situation and her explanation frustrates him as she bounces around the facts.

There are more than a few twists and turns in this book along with the sizzling relationship they begin or rather continue. I really love how we see everyone from the previous books and see how they are faring.

I’m going to catch up with Brody and then wait impatiently for the next book!

Maryann Jordan

I have always been an avid reader. My early memories were of my mother taking me to the library and allowing me to check out as many books as I could carry. My favorite books were checked out numerous times and read over and over. I would use my Barbie dolls to play out the scenes in books (such as Nancy Drew!).

I have written as a hobby for many years (probably since childhood). I have written devotionals, autobiographical writings about having a severely handicapped, medically fragile child, about my mother’s Alzheimer’s, and other subjects that interest me.

I joke that I “cut my romance teeth” on the old historical romance books. In 2013, I started a blog to showcase wonderful writers. In 2014, I finally gave in to the characters in my head pleading for their story to be told. Thus, Emma’s Home was created.

I worked as a counselor in a high school and was involved in education for the past 30 years, until retiring in 2015. I have been married to a wonderfully patient man for 35 years and have 2 adult, very supportive daughters. When writing, my dog or one of my cats will usually be found in my lap!

blurb-fall-cornucopia

The Montgomery Ink: Boulder series concludes with a fake relationship where the heat and emotional connection are anything but false.

The moment Madison McClard’s parents tell her that her ex is getting married, there’s no getting out of their latest scheme. One moment she’s trying to get out of their clutches. The next, they’re telling her exactly who she’ll marry to save the family name. The one thing her parents don’t count on, however: Aaron Montgomery.

Aaron Montgomery didn’t mean to lie. Still, as soon as he overheard Madison’s dilemma, the words fell out of his mouth. Now, he’s fake engaged to a woman he barely knows, who also happens to be his new brother-in-law’s cousin.

As the deception mounts, so does the attraction. They told themselves it was only a ruse, but as feelings ramp and dangers surge, this Montgomery may have just met his match.

He simply has to fight to keep her.

review-fall-cornucopia

I have to confess I am way behind on this series, I love the Montgomery family and I really need to catch up.

This book opens with Madison attending a gallery showing for here cousin Lincoln. He is in a relationship with Ethan Montgomery and Holland Yeaton, one that not everyone, including Madison’s parents approved of. More than that Madison takes a lot of crap from her mother in an effort to be what her mother expects her to be.

Aaron Montgomery is just one of Madison’s Montgomery friends, and he overhears a conversation that infuriates him. Without really thinking about it he steps in and this story takes off.

This is a favorite scene and is part of the excerpt on Carrie Ann’s website.

“Madison,” a sharp voice said from behind her. “What do you think you are wearing?”

Madison turned on her heels, steeling herself. Goosebumps pebbled her flesh, and she cursed her natural instincts to run and hide. She was not afraid of the woman in front of her. She couldn’t be. And yet, fear coated her.

“Mother.”

“What is that atrocity on you? It is hugging your hips and makes you look even wider than you are. Than you could possibly be. The number of cupcakes you eat makes you wide enough. You don’t need to accentuate it.”

They were in a corner with Madison’s father blocking the two of them. Nobody could really overhear, but she was still embarrassed.

“This isn’t the place, Mother.”

“Don’t you dare talk back to me. And how dare you force Lincoln to invite us when you should have been the one to invite us?”

“What? This isn’t even my event. Of course, Lincoln should have invited you. This is his night.”

“We are family,” Mother snapped. “That is not how things work. You are our daughter. You were the one that was supposed to get us here. Instead, your cousin had to take time out of his precious day with his deviants in order to invite us when we should have already been on the guest list.”

“First, you’re not making any sense. You’re contradicting yourself. Second? Don’t use that word.”

“What? Deviants? We are talking about his proclivities,” her mother snipped. “I don’t understand why people are so accepting.”

“It’s not your place to understand. It is not your place to talk about it.”

“What did I say about talking back to me? You’re lucky we’re in public, or I would wipe that smile right off your face.”

Madison let out a sigh. She stood up to her mother often, but Mother didn’t care. She had only gotten worse the older she got, and as Madison remained unmarried.

“Anyway, since you’re here and you won’t bother to come over for dinner so we can talk to you, we’re just going to have to deal with this now.”

“I’ve been busy. It’s a very busy time for my store.”

“Yes, your precious little store. Where you just have to indulge in everything you bake.”

“Stop it,” Madison snapped.

“Whatever.” Her mother waved her hand again before she snapped her fingers. “Guy.”

Guy? What? Who the hell was she talking about? A guy?

A man wearing a custom-cut suit and a winning smile came over, his bright green eyes flashing. He had perfectly coiffed hair. A single strand delicately flopped over his forehead before he whipped it back, a careless gesture that could have been sexy in any other case.

All Madison felt was meh.

Meh because she had a horrible feeling about this.

“What’s going on?” Madison asked, worried.

“This is Guy. Guy, this is the daughter we were telling you about. I wish she had worn the dress I sent over, but there’s nothing we can do about that now. This is going to be the woman you’ll marry.”

Guy smiled, and Madison just blinked, grateful that she wasn’t drinking anything or she would have likely choked.

“Excuse me?” Madison asked, confused, angry, and really fucking worried.

“Honey, you’re fat. No one is going to love you. Or even want you. And while I understand that that is a curse on our family now, we have found a way to get you to the next stage of your life. As I said, this is Guy. He comes from good, respected family stock, has a great job, and will take you in hand. He is going to be the man you marry.”

Madison just blinked, confused, horror sliding over her. Her mother had called her those things before. But marriage?

What. The. Fuck?

“What?” Madison gasped.

“Don’t worry. It happens all the time. There are still arranged marriages these days. We found you the perfect match because, apparently, you’ve been spending too much time on whatever you’ve been baking,”—baking being code for eating, no doubt. After all, her mother was never subtle—“to find yourself a man.”

“No. You can’t just tell me who I’m going to marry.”

“Do not embarrass me,” her mother whispered.

“You’re the one who’s embarrassing me.”

“You will do this. For once in your life, you will do what I tell you and make us proud. Do not be such a disappointment.”

Before Madison could say anything, before she could truly understand what was happening, an arm slid around her waist and squeezed her hip. She froze, knowing that touch.

Remembering that touch.

“Madison, baby, there you are.” And then Aaron Montgomery kissed the side of her temple and grinned down at her.

Madison blinked up at him, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

“Excuse me,” her mother snapped. “This is a private conversation.”

Madison looked up as Aaron raised a single brow. “Not too private, considering I could overhear you,” he growled. Although his voice sounded completely pleasant, Madison heard the warning there.

“Aaron,” she whispered.

“No, no, Madison. I think it’s time we stop holding our secrets back.”

Confused, she just looked up at him.

“Secret?” her mother snapped. Like always, her father simply stood there, quiet.

Madison felt like she should hate them both. But they were her parents. She had tried for so long to be good for them. To understand why they hated her so much.

But it was a lost cause.

“I wanted to talk to you both first,” Aaron began. “But I asked, and she said yes. Madison and I are getting married.”

Madison blinked, her brain going blank. Her mother gasped, and her father looked nonplussed.

“Married?” her mother whispered, her tone incredulous.

“Married.” Aaron looked down at Madison and grinned.

He was such a good actor. Madison saw the warmth in his eyes, even slightly doused by the anger that was also there. “I’m going to marry your daughter, Mrs. McClard. And that means that guy over there? He’s not needed.”

“Madison, this can’t be true.”

Madison heard the anger in her mother’s tone. Knew her mom thought that Aaron could never want a girl like Madison. She braced for the words.

“Yes, yes we are.”

The lie came out of nowhere, and yet it felt right. And also like a horrible mistake. But she kept her gaze steady.

“That can’t be true,” her mother continued. “Who would want a girl like you?”

And there it was. Aaron’s jaw tightened at those words, and Madison looked over to her mother and raised her chin. “Aaron did. And, yes, he’s my fiancé.”

And on that note, with that lie, she knew for certain it had been a horrible mistake. However, the look of pure astonishment and hatred in her mother’s eyes made it all worth it.

At least she hoped to hell it had been a lie.
Carrie Ann Ryan. Seduced In Ink: Montgomery Ink Boulder. (Kindle Locations 206-265).

The thing is Aaron has always liked Madison but was afraid to take it further than friendship. Madison on the other hand has a successful coffee shop ‘Sin in a Cup’ where she serves coffee and sinfully delicious cupcakes. However around her mother her entire personality changes from friendly and outgoing to subdued and mostly obedient.

Aaron’s goal is to strengthen Madison’s resolve to take a stand then they could both just walk away friends.

Like all impetuous plans this one has more than a couple flaws. Which of course is what makes this book, fun, flirty and down right steamy.

A thoroughly enjoyable read with sizzling heat, laughter, tears and so much more!

Her Masks

By
Rebecca Royce
&
Ripley Proserpina

review-fall-cornucopia

Chaney had been locked away as a danger to herself and others after insisting that the masks she saw were real people. She first met the men when she was sixteen, they only came to be on Halloween and this year she had to see them. She’s twenty now and for escaping this time she is sure she will be sent to another facility far away from New Orleans.

The masks were in an old abandoned theatre, that no one knew the ownership. The state wouldn’t tear it down fearing some kind of historical significance. When Chaney finds the masks where she had left them the last time, she lines them up in a specific order. This was the only way they could come to her, in fact that was the word she used to summon them, Come.

Thinking this is the last time she will ever see them, she tells them where she has been. She also tells them she will be pursued and sent away. Matthew, Scott and Robert weren’t going to let that happen to her, they take her to a safe house and explain who they are and where they are from. They give her the choice to return with them to their time.

Let’s just say that alone is a lot for her to take in, but things get even more complicated with every turn of the page.

The pull of the bond is such that Chaney and her men have no choice but to complete it in scenes that had my kindle smoking (kidding), but wow talk about sizzle!

Twists and turns, surprises and sizzle abound in this very different short story.

blurb-fall-cornucopia

After the death of her mother, Paget Sour did what she could to help her father, but she had no idea how bad things had gotten, both financially, or medically. As things begin to unravel, and her father’s health takes a turn for the worse, Paget faces some of the tough decisions she’s ever had to make. All she wants is to is make her father’s last few months on this earth as comfortable as possible in the safety of his home.

But she can’t do it alone. Not if she wants to pay the bills, keep the house, and protect her father.

However, the last thing she needs is the pesky bartender who happens to make the best Whiskey Sour showing up offering his help, among other things.

Boone Wilder wants one thing, and one thing only. He wants to make Paget Sour his, and his alone. She comes into his bar regularly, orders a Whiskey Sour has a good chat, and then leaves, always refusing a date. So, when he hears about her sick father, it’s Boone to the rescue.

Only, Paget isn’t easily that won over, and Boone soon realizes, if he’s going to get the woman he loves, he’s going to have to make a few changes of his own.

And he’s going to have to come clean about one very big lie.

review-fall-cornucopia

Paige Sour has a sort of routine on Thursdays. She’d go to Boone’s bar and grill, order dinner for herself and her dad, drinking the best whiskey sour on earth while she waits. The owner Boone also spent time with her, flirting a bit while she waited. This night would prove to be a bit different than the others though.

Paget finds her father unconscious when she arrives at his home. The verdict at the hospital is that he’s had a stroke, but signs are good that he’ll get back most of what he’d lost. She wasn’t going to leave him alone at the hospital, he was very confused and angry. She needed to be there if he woke during the night.

She never expected Boone to show up.

This is a favorite scene.

Paget glanced at her wrist. “Shit. My Apple Watch is dead.”

“Your phone must be too, because I tried calling and texting a dozen times.”

“How’d you find out?” She leaned back, resting her head on the armrest of the sofa. Dark, puffy circles lined her eyes.

“A couple of neighbors talking about it at the bar who saw the ambulance. I don’t know them by name. I think they live a few streets over.”

She let out a long breath. “I appreciate you coming, but there is no need for you to stay. You should go home and get some sleep.”

“So should you. You’re not going to do your father any good if you get run-down and sick.”

“I can’t leave him here tonight. He’s scared and still doesn’t really understand what happened. The nurses said they’d come get me if he wakes up in the middle of the night.”

He eyed the size of the sofa. For a hospital couch, it was fairly wide and comfy. He had to wonder how many people crashed here overnight. “Well, if you’re staying, then I am too.” He lifted the blanket and scooted in behind her, wrapping his arm around her body, keeping her back tight to his chest, tucking his knees against hers. They fit together like the last piece of a puzzle.

“Hey. What the hell are you doing?” She wiggled, glancing over her shoulder.

He bit back a groan. “This sofa is big enough for the both of us.”

“Like hell it is.” She elbowed him in the gut. “You are not sleeping here with me.”

“I’m not leaving, and this is the only place to sleep. I’d say I’d keep my hands to myself, but that’s impossible.”

“You’re not funny.” She tucked her hands under her cheek.

He took the opportunity to slip his other arm under the pillow. What he really wanted to do was press his lips against her temple, but he wasn’t going to press his luck.

Not tonight anyway.

“Thanks for coming,” she whispered. “I owe you.”

“Nah. That’s what friends are for.”

“Is that what we are? Friends?”

“I’d like to think so,” he said. “I mean, I don’t save a bar stool for anyone else.”

“Thanks. I appreciate everything you’ve done for me and my dad.”

“Don’t think twice about it. Now close your eyes and get some sleep. You need it.” He ignored the voice in the back of his head that told him that kissing her would be a mistake. It was just a little peck on her cheek. It meant nothing and at the same time it meant everything. “Good night,” he whispered as he closed his eyes.

This wasn’t the time to go making a pass at Paget. But he would be there for her, and when the time was right, he’d make his feelings known.
Jen Talty. Whiskey Sour: It’s All in the Whiskey (Kindle Locations 286-309).

Boone has been keeping a lot of things from the people her in Buhl, a big one is his real identity. He really needs to tell Paget who he really is. After all the supplement Paget believes is responsible for her mother’s death was produced and marketed by his ex-wife. The woman actually used a compound created by him, but it was never meant to be used in a supplement, and had problems of it’s own.

The plot thickens further as Paget puts her cabin on the market, she had been struggling with the debts her father had incurred with her mother’s illness even before she died. This hospitalization would put too much of a strain if she had to support two households and the treatments her father requires.

She firmly refuses monetary help from her employers, the Whiskey family, and is determined to work shifts at the bar to pay for Boone’s time sitting with her dad.

Boone is falling for Paget and she for him and they definitely heat up the pages of this book.

A few twists and turns, some surprises and a simmer to sizzle relationship.

review-fall-cornucopia

Ever since the team left Timor-Leste with Piper and the girls, I was waiting for Phantom to remember what he had seen. When he was injured in Avery’s rescue and remembered, I cried my eyes out. I thought they would all go get Kalee. Apparently that wasn’t what the government had in mind when Tex supplied the information of Kaylee’s whereabouts.

Without a doubt Forest ‘Phantom’ Dalton, wasn’t going to sit around waiting. Tex had given him all the information he needed to get Kalee back home where she belongs.

I held my breath as I read, Phantom truly is one. The way he got Kalee out was perfectly executed, but the after brought me to tears.

This is a favorite scene and the first one that made me cry.

Suddenly anxious to clean every inch of herself, to rid her body of the dirt that clung to her like a parasite, she reached for the used bar of soap sitting on a ledge nearby.

Not caring that others had used it—it was amazing how things that would’ve grossed her out a year ago didn’t even faze her now—Kalee quickly rubbed her hands together and worked up some foam. Then she ran her hands over her body, cleansing all the unwanted touches away. She felt almost giddy.

The dirty bubbles swirled at her feet before they disappeared down the drain.

But then the enjoyment and high of being free faded suddenly, and the realization of just what she’d escaped pressed down on her. Of what she’d endured. Of what she’d been made to do.

Tears formed in her eyes again. She hadn’t cried in forever, and here she was crying for the second time in minutes. It was as if getting clean washed away the armor she’d donned to protect her heart and mind from the hell she was living in, leaving her vulnerable and unable to function.

Kalee’s knees went weak, and she fell to the floor, not even feeling the pain from her knees hitting the tile. The hot water rained down on her back as she bent, her arms around her stomach, her forehead resting on the floor.

She sobbed. The unfairness of her situation hitting her all at once. She couldn’t breathe, images of what she’d seen and done flashing through her brain, sickening her.

One second she was lost in her memories, and the next the water above her turned off and she felt a towel drape across her back. She should’ve freaked out when she felt hands turning her. Lifting her. But deep down inside, she knew it was Phantom. He wouldn’t hurt her. Not like the others had.

She found herself sitting on Phantom’s lap, her face buried in his chest. His beard tickled her cheek.

After a few minutes, she barely registered the sensation of her body being lifted. Clinging to him, Kalee let her mind shut down. She couldn’t take any more. Not one thing. Everything was overwhelming. Her skin, which had felt so clean a second ago, now tingled and burned with the heat of the water. The dirt flaking from her body had opened a wound so deep, she wasn’t sure it would ever heal.

“I’ve got you, precious. That’s it, let it out. You’re safe now.”

She heard his words, but they didn’t really penetrate. Kalee felt him push open the door to the bathroom and stride toward his room. The cold air felt good against her overheated skin, and she didn’t even care at the moment that she was probably flashing anyone who might happen to come down the hall.

Phantom leaned over and sat her on something soft, but she refused to let go of him. The tears wouldn’t stop either. They coursed down her face as if someone had turned on a faucet inside her.

Phantom didn’t seem to have any plans to make her let go. She felt him shifting them until she was under a sheet, and he was sitting on top of it. He readjusted the towel over her shoulders, and she snuggled into his side as he leaned against the headboard of the small bed in his room.

Squeezing her eyes shut didn’t stop her tears. Nor did it stop the images running through her brain as if they were a movie on fast forward.

The bodies of the little girls she’d gotten to know at the orphanage.

The leering expression of the first man to rape her as she fought him with all her might, to no avail.

The screams of villagers as the rebels swooped into their small towns, shooting everyone who moved.

The drunken laughter of the rebels as they celebrated the day’s haul with beer and food, making sure she didn’t get any.

The pictures went on and on in her head. Taunting her with all she’d had to endure.

How long she sobbed on Phantom, Kalee had no idea. All she knew was that with his arms around her, the nightmares couldn’t pull her under. She was watching everything that had happened to her over the last months, but Phantom was there to make sure she didn’t get sucked back in.

When she finally realized where she was again, and that she wasn’t a captive anymore, Phantom was slowly rocking her back and forth. She was still naked, but at the moment it didn’t matter. She was being touched. More than that, she was clinging to Phantom as if she’d fly away if she let go.

But she wasn’t embarrassed. Mostly because of Phantom. He wasn’t telling her to hush. Wasn’t begging her to stop crying, as she figured most badass Navy SEALs probably would. Instead, he was murmuring for her to let it out. To cry as long as she needed to. To cleanse her soul…that nothing she did was her fault.

Feeling exhausted, Kalee tried to lift her head. Tried to get her muscles to obey, to let go of the man under her. But Phantom simply tightened his hold.

“Close your eyes, Kalee. Rest.”

But they needed to go. He’d said they had to get to the embassy and catch a flight.

As if he could read her mind, Phantom said, “We’ve got time. I’ve got you. Sleep. Just for a bit. I’ll wake you when we need to go. You’re safe, Kalee.”
Stoker, Susan. Securing Kalee (SEAL of Protection: Legacy Book 6). Stoker Aces Production, LLC. Kindle Locations (470-511).Kindle Edition.

Phantom didn’t take her straight back to California, he knew she need to acclimate first. A beach house in Hawaii, becomes a place of healing for Kalee. She has an inner strength that just needed some prodding. Phantom was the perfect person to bring her through.

Their relationship is a slow simmer and we learn much about the grumpy Phantom. He knows, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that when he returns to California he would be facing an Admiral’s Mast for disobeying a direct order.

We meet a new SEAL team in this one. Mustang, Midas, Aleck, Pid and Slate become pivotal in proving to Rocco that Phantom truly was in Hawaii and not Timor-Leste. Of course he’s already been there and returned with Kalee.

I loved every interaction between Phantom and Kalee as well as those with the Hawaii team. The love, the emotional support and so much more flew off the pages of this story of survival.

I laughed, cried and cheered as this story unfolds, there are than a few surprises, some good, some bad. Just don’t start reading at bedtime…there will be no sleep if you do.

I can’t wait to read the books Susan has planned for the Hawaii Team and of course the one coming soon for Commander North.

Nolan (Ringer) Bell is a SEAL, sidelined for a ruptured appendix and on medical leave. Bored at his mom’s house, he agrees to help his sister, a local PI, specializing in financial fraud. The case…suspected money laundering through a wedding chapel with ties to a casino.

His sister partners him with Lynn Cox, another PI, who just happens to be the high school crush he left behind when he joined the SEALs. Their assignment…to have a pretend wedding to get a close up view at what is going on in the chapel and spend their “honeymoon” at the Casino resort.

Ringer’s sweet but meddling mother is the secretary setting up the details. She has always had a soft spot for Lynn and uses their real documents when applying for their “fake marriage license”.

Discovering they are married for real, Ringer and Lynn have to figure out how to get unmarried while still investigating the casino mob’s money laundering scheme. A night gambling and drinking lands Ringer and Lynn in honeymoon suite.

Maybe mom knows best, after all. Or maybe they won’t survive the night.

review-fall-cornucopia

What does a healing Navy SEAL do when he’s bored out of his mind? He jumps at the chance to help his sister with one of her PI cases.

Nolan may not have been totally thinking straight when he decides to go along with his sister Nancy’s hairbrained scheme to get the financial information her client needs to prove her husband is hiding money from her.

Lynn Cox is a certified fraud examiner and forensic accountant, she has been Nancy’s best friend for years and even as a teen had a crush on Nolan. When presented with the idea of posing as a bride to get into the office of ‘Cupid of the Mountains’ Wedding Chapel she sort of agrees. However when she finds out who her groom was going to be she was more than a little shocked.

This is a favorite scene.

Throwing up her palm toward Nancy, she halted her litany. “Okay, okay, I get it. Yes, we’ve been sneaky before. But why do I get the feeling that what you’re going to ask me to do is beyond regular subterfuge and possibly involves something more nefarious?”

“Look, it’s not illegal for us to get our hands on the wedding chapel’s financial records. After all, Sally is a co-owner of the business and has a legal right to those records. She’s going to permit us to obtain those records in any way we see fit and then follow the trail of money wherever it leads. Legally, she can do that without her husband’s permission.”

“So, she wants us to get our hands on the records instead of her giving them to us.”

Nodding, Nancy grinned. “Exactly!”

Lynn thought for a moment, pondering the implications. Finally, shrugging, she said, “Well, you’re the PI. You get your hands on the records, and I’ll take a look at them.”

“Um… well, that’s where it gets a little complicated. I can’t exactly sneak in. I’ve done some PI work in the area, and I’m afraid they might recognize me. What I need is someone who can get inside the business to get the records.”

Lynn opened her mouth to argue, but Nancy jumped in, cutting her off.

“I know it sounds weird, but I was hoping you could go in as a potential bride who’s checking out the place, and perhaps, if someone was with you who could keep an eye out, then you’d be able to grab a copy of the records. Sally claims everything’s kept on his computer in the office.”

Air left her lungs as she exhaled, but she forgot to inhale again. Finally, sucking in a deep breath, she tried to clear her mind. “Nancy, this is the most harebrained scheme you’ve ever come up with, and you’ve come up with some doozies before!”

“It can work. You’ve told me yourself that it’s easy to get financial records off the computer and only takes a few minutes.”

“Yes, but I don’t know anything about how to get into a place unseen and undetected! That’s not legal! I’m not going to lose my accounting license so she can get her husband’s ill-gotten gains!”

“Sally is giving us legal permission to go into the business and get the financial records. Plus, it will be virtually no risk because I’ll pair you with someone who will handle doing everything needed except for you getting the records. He’ll figure out what to do. Plan everything. They’ll make sure you get in and out with no problem.”

“Girl, this sounds like you’ve created a recipe for disaster.”

Shaking her head, she said, “No, actually, this is going to be a mission planned to precision.”

“So, I’m supposed to go in and pretend to be a bride?”

“Yes, and the person you go in with will be your pretend groom. You look around, you get the lay of the land, and then he’ll figure out how to get you into the office to obtain the records.”

“And if we get discovered and they call the police?”

“Believe me, the person who’s going to help you would not be involved in anything illegal. Remember, Sally is a co-owner of the business and is giving you written permission to go in. Granted, she’s not telling her husband ahead of time, but she’s still permitting you to get those records. Plus, let me just add that Sally Hightower is willing to pay a huge sum for us to do this. She knows her husband is probably making millions, and she is more than willing to make sure we’re well compensated for helping her get her due.”

That gave Lynn pause. Her business was certainly doing well, but it was sporadic, and she was still paying student loans while saving for a house. Nibbling on her bottom lip, she thought how nice a fat paycheck would be. Sighing, she finally nodded. “As long as it’s not illegal, and I’ll have written authorization from Sally that says I can get the records just in case we get caught and someone tries to get me arrested, I guess I can do it—”

“Yay!” The cheer from the doorway caused both Nancy and Linda to jump as Rita popped into the room, her hands clapping and her face bright with excitement. “I’m so glad you said yes! I think this is going to be perfect!”

Uncertain why Rita would be so excited for her to take on this scheme, Lynn shot her gaze over to Nancy.

“Mom, you’re a little premature. I haven’t finished letting Lynn know the whole plan.”

Lynn swung her gaze between Rita’s beaming face and Nancy’s tight smile. “Um… the whole plan? Who’s going to go in with me?”

The buzzer from the front door rang. “Mom? Nancy? Are you guys back here?”

The deep voice coming from the front of the office echoed down the hall, causing Lynn’s stomach to plunge. Oh, no! No way!

“Back here, dear!” Rita called out. She beamed toward Lynn as she stepped to the side and Nolan’s presence filled the doorway, his gaze landing on hers.

Nancy, her gaze cautious, piped up from behind her desk. “Lynn, meet your undercover groom.”
Jordan, Maryann. Hot SEAL, Undercover Groom (SEALs in Paradise) (pp. 26-29). Kindle Edition.

What Nolan has never admitted is that if Lynn had been older he wouldn’t have been upset by her kiss all those years ago. Now faced with spending time with her, he finds himself enjoying her company.

Their plan goes a bit awry but they do manage to get the information the client needs. The honeymoon at the casino has it’s own surprises and twists as well.

Suspense, intrigue, a bit of action and sizzling heat will keep you turning the pages.

review-fall-cornucopia

When we left Tessa she was heading home with David, Jewel, Ian Cody and the counsel member their father trusted. She didn’t know him or the driver. She falls asleep and when she wakes, she’s alone in the car. There’s no sign of anyone and there is really nowhere to hide then she remembers something she saw when she first awoke. Not a jet stream but their energy.

While Tessa is trying to find her brother and friends, Jared gets some visitors, the police of course and his Aunt. He’s pretty sure his Uncle sold him to the blood farm but he’d have to prove it.

Jewel and Cody wake from the drugs first and manage to get free of their bindings. The other two wake while they are untying them. In a typical mistake the room they are in isn’t locked so they start looking for Tessa. What find is more vampires including the Counselman who was with them all drugged but the Counselman is on a different type of machine.

Serus and Goran realizing the kids are missing AGAIN, head back to the blood farm, they also need to find Taz.

In the meantime Tessa gets closer to where the guys and Jewel are being held, and having some interesting thoughts.

This is a favorite scene.

“Oomph!” Smash. Tumble. Groan. Tessa cried out in panic as her legs pumped hard, trying to keep her on her feet as the force propelled her forward.

“Ah, shit.” Again, she wasn’t thinking. She should have landed and lifted off immediately. And then suddenly she found herself airborne again…and how she soared! The energetic force propelled her way further than she could have guessed.

“Yes!” she laughed as her jump crossed half the field and removed much of the force from her fall. She landed, a little hard, but immediately lifted off again and soared another amazing amazing distance. Finally, she could slow enough to land and walk a few feet before finally coming to a dead stop.

She took several more steps, then crouched to rest and catch her breath. That had been a rush. Not one she really wanted to repeat any time soon, but if that’s how fliers felt every time they flew…wow. What an incredible feeling.

With her nerves steady again and her breathing more or less normal, Tessa walked toward the small village off to the left.

She slipped behind the first set of trees and surveyed the cluster of buildings. The windows were covered to almost black. So, it was a vampire holding.

Where the hell was she, anyway? And how come there were so many vampire holdings hidden away? The very concept of a hidden holding made her think again of the assholes who had been screwing her life up

There was no sign of anyone out of the buildings. But the windows were a dead giveaway.

Time was running out. It was getting harder to see the trail and, with the sunlight, the rest of the energy would be even harder to see. She jumped to the top of the nearest tree, picked out her next spot and glided across, keeping as low a profile as possible. Now, if she could land as smoothly as her father, she’d barely disturb the trees. Instead, the tops swayed and shook with her erratic movements. It took time, but she eventually worked her way around the small village to the far side. And then she found the house where the energy stream dissipated.

So, whoever had been at the vehicle had landed here. She studied the area, searching for any other energy patterns but found none. If the vamps had come here, they were either still here or had left by a different method.

Shifting her gaze slightly, she could barely see the shimmer of other energies melting into the mix. Cody’s shone – weak, but threaded through the stream.

Her heart lightened.

He was here. She could sense him. Her gaze widened as she realized the truth of that. She couldn’t actually hear him or see him, but there was a feeling of connectedness. She closed her eyes and focused as hard as she could. Cody?

There was nothing except…maybe a warming warming sensation. But then, maybe there wasn’t either.

She didn’t dare worry about all the reasons why Cody might not be able to answer her. If she did, the fear would drop her to her knees.

She shivered in the tree. Why didn’t she have a cell phone? Well, she did, but…the damn battery was dead. She needed to be able to call her father at least. Did he have any idea that they were missing yet? And what about her mother? Had those damn drugs left her system yet?

Still, it was David, Jewel, Ian, and Cody who worried her the most right now. They’d been with her when they’d left the blood farm. They should be with her now. She was damn tired of waking up alone.

Her eyes widened. And then she grinned.

And didn’t that bring up a whole slew of possibilities? Damn Cody for taking over her thoughts and stirring up her hormones. She’d believed Jared was the love of her life until Cody flew in and stole a piece of her heart – or maybe the whole thing.

blurb-fall-cornucopia

Running away on my wedding day probably wasn’t the best idea. Horrified by the future I’d signed up for, I turned right around and rushed up the aisle away from my drug-addicted groom….and right into the arms of my father’s estranged business partner, Zeke Scott.

Zeke makes me a promise: he’ll help me become independent, the kind of woman I’ve always wanted to be, if I help him discover my father’s hidden secrets proving his betrayal.

But Zeke is a man with secrets of his own and although our love should be forbidden—he is sixteen years older with a lifetime of experience—I can’t resist the pull between us. The longer our explosive arrangement goes on–the less I want to.

He’s another man in my life who wants something from me but at least he’s honest about it and his kisses come with promises of freedom from the gilded bars I’ve spent a lifetime behind. But when the time comes to leave…can I walk away at all?

NOTE:
This book has a happily ever after, with a complete love story. The reader should be aware this is a dark age gap contemporary romance with a possessive hero and a heroine who needs to find her way to know herself. They have a lot to go through to find their forever love. This is the first in a series where every book is a different couple and each book has a happy ending.

It’s amazing just how cruel family can be, but in Layla’s case it just might be her salvation.

Layla was about to marry Kit Allard. Everything about this wedding was planned by her future mother-in-law, even her dress. As she walked down the aisle on her father’s arm she realized she hated the man at the end of the aisle, and she was pretty sure he hated her too. With that thought she flees, running with no destination in mind, and losing her shoes in the process. She’s in Paris, she doesn’t speak or understand the language and finally when she ran out of steam she sat on a bench to think.

They found her there, her father, her sisters, Bridget and Hope, her brother Justin, and their security chief Michael. In a very public display her father disowns her ordering her siblings to follow or be cut as well. Justin gives her a debit card, and takes her jewelry to return to Kit, a promises to meet her at the Hotel des Oiseaux, ‘the Hotel of Birds;. Unfortunately the debit card had no money on it.

It’s Zach Scott who meets her there, her siblings all whisked away to the airport and a flight back to New York. That is except for Justin who took off with Kit.

Zach makes her an offer she has to take, a place to live and a promise to teach her how to never be in this position again.

What follows is a story as heartbreaking as it is romantic. Paris is for sure the city of love, and exploring it through their eyes was a beautiful experience.

Now you know nothing is going to be easy and the antagonist is the same throughout. Sometimes family just stinks. It’s also an awaking of sorts for Layla and her sisters as well. But Layla hers is a journey, one you really mustn’t miss.

I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!

“In one and the same fire,
clay grows hard and wax melts.”
– Francis Bacon

Valda is finally free, but her secrets have revealed new puzzles. Hatch and Dirk have been taken. Worse, Oz seems to have abandoned them.

Now, with Andreas at her side, she will wage a war she never wanted to fight against an organization she knows nothing about to save the men she loves.

The answer everyone wants is housed within her mind. Now, if only Valda knew what the question is. No matter what, she will do whatever it takes to save them. They didn’t give up on her.

She will be damned if she will lose them now.

The epic conclusion to the Time Captive trilogy. Brace yourselves, it’s going to be a wild ride.

NOTE::
This is a reverse harem and the author suggests you always read the forward in her books. This is the third and final book in a trilogy.

When we last left Valda, she had awoken to find, Dirk and Hatch were taken and now missing, and Oz was going to leave her to pursue his life again. With her compound destroyed she returns to the island where she was ‘born’ to recover in a way only she can. Oz leaves her in Andreas’ care and goes off to do whatever he needs to do. Let me just say that was a bit of a surprise.

Once Valda awakens, Andreas has a much better understand of who and what Valda is. Still she has recovering to do before they can go after Dirk and Hatch. Once Andreas sees she can undertake the journey they make a call from Campbell’s yacht. They discover that Blossom Foundry has he men in England and Smithson would do anything to get what he wants.

This is a favorite scene.

England.

Hatch and Dirk were in England. They’d been taken halfway around the world, or so Alexander Smithson claimed during the single call I’d accepted from the Blossom Foundry. We’d done it on board the yacht while on open sea away from the island and the Utopia lab. The precaution was one I could agree with, though Andreas was not a fan. Campbell’s ship wasn’t really a yacht, but it was sleek and well-armed. She also cut through the seas neatly, and while the waves offered some sway, it barely dislodged me from where I held my pose on the foredeck.

My muscles protested the position, because I had to maintain vrksasana, tree pose, no matter the ship’s movement as it sliced through the water. The engines had been opened to full throttle, and while there were more than twenty men on board with us, there were even more awaiting us in England.

Campbell had sent a unit ahead to scout and track the actual location. I trusted them to do their job. If he had his way, I would be back in the Utopia bunker. But I refused to stay hidden. I understood the concern. I even appreciated how the man laid out all the ways Smithson and the Blossom Foundry were trying to lure me in. I was the target.

Yes.

Dirk would kill him if they let me get taken.

I understood his worry there as well. I trusted Campbell and his men because Dirk trusted them. Dirk had seen to my security for years, and I trusted him with all of it. It was easier for me to let go of that piece of control to focus on my work, and it soothed him to maintain an iron fist over my safety. What I had only confessed to him once left a mark on both of us, looking back with the perfection of hindsight, I could almost see when the indelible shift in our relationship had begun.

While my faith was absolute, my conviction was devout. I would not let them be kept a moment longer than necessary. They had not abandoned me, and I refused to abandon them. To my surprise and ever-lasting delight, Andreas had taken my side in the argument. He wanted them back, too. We were lovers again, finally. And I’d woken each day since in his arms, wrapped and safe. Yet I could not savor it the way I wanted to while I worried about what was being done to Hatch and Dirk.

They’d been kind enough to provide proof of life.

Bloodied.

Battered.

Proof of life.

All the calm I’d scraped together during my yoga fled as images of Dirk’s shaved, cut head and swollen face filled my eyes. Hatch hadn’t faired much better. There were burn marks on his skull. I didn’t need expertise to know what had been done to them. The images had been geared to show me one thing.

They were alive.

They didn’t have to stay that way.

If the Blossom Foundry did not get what they wanted, they would use Dirk and Hatch to attempt it. Lowering my leg, I dipped into adho mukha svanasana, downward dog, and let out a breath. Maybe the blood rushing to my head could cleanse it from those images.

Still, nothing could fully erase them, and I didn’t want to. I could see Hatch’s beautiful eyes, all puffy and bruised. Blood trickled from his nose. The metallic taste coated my tongue and my pulse throbbed against my eyes as I pushed down into urdhva mukha svanasana, upward facing dog, then I opened my eyes, expecting to see the blue sky and the snow white drift of clouds in the distance.

Hatch stared back at me, a corner of his mouth kicking a little higher, despite the puffiness marring the other side of his beautiful lips. A cut sliced through the bottom one, likely inflicted by a ring slamming a blow there. As if the very thought of it summoned the image, I could feel the blow, and a wet laugh escaped me.

“Hey, beautiful,” Hatch murmured, his voice a little slurred and his head leaning a little to the side as though it were a great effort to keep it up. “This is an excellent fucking dream. You look great.”

My heart squeezed. I didn’t release the pose for fear of losing sight of him.

“Yeah, I’m not pretty.” He tried to shrug, but his shoulders barely moved. A faint grimace pulled taut over his face. “But this is hardly the worst I’ve been. Gimme a hot shower and a good night’s sleep, and I’ll be all better again.”

Tears filtered across my vision, and he wavered.
Heather Long. Fast Forward (ARC Copy): Time Captive Book 3 (Kindle Locations 746-751).

Hatch and Valda seem to have an unusual connection, one they will have to investigate further once they are all together again. The only problem is that it exhausts Valda. So even though Andreas doesn’t quite believe what she says she saw and heard, he doesn’t want her doing it again.

England is where all of this will come to a head. Valda has questions she needs answered and frankly she has no intention of giving in to Smithson.

This is the perfect conclusion to this awesome trilogy. There is romance, lots of action, and that sizzling heat as only Heather writes it.

Don’t miss this book it was definitely worth the wait!

Headlands Hospital’s hottest doctors.
Brilliant.
Good looking.
And terribly off limits.

I went to the hospital with an aching… need.
And the handsome doctors made me all better with their big… instruments.

I want to show them my… gratitude.
But first I have make sure they don’t find out my father is their boss.

Or that I’m just finishing nursing school—and will start working with them next month.

The last thing Charleigh ‘Char’ Biddle expected when she went to the emergency room with a badly cut hand is to run into Bowie Grier. She didn’t recognize him at first, after all she met him in Aspen. She didn’t even know he was a doctor.

Dr. Bowie Grier, hasn’t forgotten the beautiful blonde he is now treating. Although he doesn’t believe a word of her story of how it happened. They had quite the night in Aspen, one he hasn’t forgotten.

Char will be starting work at the hospital and now she knows Bowie works there. Thankfully he doesn’t know her father is the CEO. She intends to keep it that way too.

We get to meet Bowie’s friends first through their interactions at the hospital. Flynn Morrow is an orthopedist, and Ace Hardin a plastic surgeon.

This is a favorite scene.

I changed the subject, speaking in a lowered voice. “Don’t look now but there go the new nurses,” I said, glancing in the direction of the lunch line.

A gaggle of fifteen or so young women and one man had just joined the lunch line. They stood out in their clean, white sneakers, and also because they were huddled together like kittens trying to get warm.

I understood. It was intimidating as hell to start a new job, much less one in a hospital with all eyes on you.

“I’m surprised they brought in so many new ones. I thought there were budget cuts,” Ace said. “There sure as hell are in plastic surgery. We’re desperate for another doctor, but keep getting told no. Think of all the boob jobs we’re not doing.”

“Damn shame,” Bowie added, craning his neck, looking.

“You see something over there you like? You’re gonna end up with a crick in your neck, Bowie, staring like that,” I said, finishing my egg.

“Are you gonna tell Flynn? Or should I?” Axe asked him, smirking.

He held his hand up as if to say go ahead.

Axe leaned closer and lowered his voice. “Remember Bowie’s story about hooking up with some beautiful blonde in Aspen last year?”

Oh yeah. We’d gotten a good laugh out of that. She’d blown his ass off big time by giving him a fake email. He never should have told us because now we’d never let him live it down.

He’d acted like it was no big deal, but Ace and I could tell it bothered him. Pretty boy Bowie wasn’t used to being ghosted by women.

“Sure, I remember. It’s just further proof that Bowie sucks in bed,” I laughed.

“Well, she’s over there,” Ace said, gesturing with his head.

Huh?

“What are you talking about?” I asked, watching the talkative group take up several tables in the middle of the cafeteria.

Ace drew his napkin across his mouth, his plate having been cleaned of the slab of lasagna. He ate like that all the time. Never gained an ounce. The bastard.

Bowie continued stealing glances. “You won’t believe this, but she came in a couple days ago to get sutures in her hand. Had no freaking idea who I was until I reminded her. And now she fucking works here.” He shook his head.

Ace stifled a laugh. “Yeah. That’s the way it goes when you suck in bed.”

Bowie discreetly popped Ace the middle finger.

“Seriously, Bowie. How could she just totally not recognize you?” I asked.

Sounded suspicious to me.

“Well, my hair was shorter then,” he said, shrugging. “That’s all I can figure.”

“Okay. Say she didn’t remember you. You gave her stitches. Fine. But now she works here? At Headlands Hospital? How is that even possible?”

Bowie shook his head in disbelief and lowered his voice. “I know. It’s fucking crazy. I was treating a little kid who had a pea up his nose, and Giovanna Rosso comes by like a mother duck with all her new nurses in tow. They start observing me and boom, there she was, in her scrubs with her hand all bandaged up. I nearly fucking fell over.”

“But did you get the pea out?” Ace asked, shaking with laughter.

Bowie rolled his eyes.

And I was speechless.

Bowie said slowly. “She’s one of our new nurses. A floater. So if we’re lucky, we’ll all get to work with her.”

Un-fucking-believable.

“Did you know she was from here, Bowie?”

He shook his head. “Nope. I knew nothing about her. Except that she was hot as shit. And could ski. And gave me a bullshit email address.”

I fake-stretched over my chair back, turning in the direction of the new nurses, now getting up from their tables.

“Oh shit. Is that her? The blonde with the braid?” I asked, watching them file out of the cafeteria.

“Yup. That’s her.”

“I think the woman next to her with the curly hair and glasses was the friend she was with in Aspen.”

No fucking way. They were both working at the hospital?

“That’s crazy shit, man,” Ace said.

I could see why Bowie was so taken with her. Not only was she stunning, but she moved with confidence, smiling and chatting with her fellow nurses.

Hell, I wouldn’t mind getting to know that woman, either.

“Guys,” I said. “You know my party is coming up. Maybe it’s time to invite some of our new nurses.”
Mika Lane. Her Dirty Doctors: A Forbidden Love Romance: A Men at Work Reverse Harem Novel (Kindle Locations 494-532). Headlands Publishing.

Bowie is the one to invite her to Flynn’s party and that’s where things start heating up very quickly.

There’s also quite a bit of family drama for Char, her father surrounds her with guilt to get his way.

Intriguing and suspenseful with lots of white hot heat!

Mika Lane

Writing has been a passion of mine since, well, forever (my first book was “The Day I Ate the Milkyway,” a true fourth-grade masterpiece), but steamy romance is now what gives purpose to my days and nights.

I live in magical Northern California with my own handsome alpha dude, sometimes known as Mr. Mika Lane, and an evil cat named Bill.

A lover of shiny things, I’ve been known to try to new recipes on unsuspecting friends, find hiding places so I can read undisturbed, and spend my last dollar on a plane ticket somewhere. I also drink cheap champagne and have way too many shoes.

I’ll always promise you a hot, sexy romp with kick-ass but imperfect heroines, and some version of a modern-day happily ever after.
