Wounded and hidden for years, LeeLee had found acceptance within her wolf. She learned firsthand the harsh reality of never being loved, and vowed to protect her heart, and body from suffering the same pain ever again.

Never one to back down, Slater O’Neil loves life. When he meets his mate in wolf form, he never thought claiming her would be quite so hard. Yet he’ll gladly battle an unknown evil more sinister than the horror movies he enjoys. After finally finding the other half of his soul, he’ll pay any price to protect the woman meant to be his.

True love doesn’t always come easy, and for these two shifters, they’ll need more than just love to make it work. LeeLee was just a child when she witnessed a horror no child should, but revisiting old hurts don’t always heal old wounds.

When you stir a hornet’s nest, you should always be prepared for what might come out. In LeeLee and Slater’s case, they are totally unprepared to step into a whole different reality. One where the ones who should love and protect, are the ones out to kill for their own gain.

Winter Blog Review

This book opens with Slater begging LeeLee to shift. He doesn’t realize until that moment that she can’t. He does know that this beautiful wolf is his mate. LeeLee however decides she needs to run from him and ends up in a terrifying situation and severely wounded.

Slater is contemplating what to do, he’s now in human form and freezing, contacted Keanu a former member of his smoke-jumping team is out of the question since his wife and LeeLee’s friend Cammie is in the hospital with their new baby. He needs to build a fire and while he’s doing that calls on his Alpha Niall Malik for help. He’s going to see if Jenna can help.

Slater’s first meeting with Jenna isn’t quite the same as hers with Kellen as the situation is much different. However, Jenna takes them to her home, which is the Fey Realm. It’s there we will learn much of LeeLee’s past as Jenna and others heal her not only physically but also her shift.

This is a favorite scene.

He turned to look back where he’d left LeeLee sleeping only to see they’d moved her to the center of the now cleared room. Damn, magic sure was a handy thing.

“As I mentioned before, this is going to be a powerful event that is going to take the power of all four of us, plus you. You will ground her, while we will do as you like to refer to as, our magic shit.” Her smile flashed and he swore whatever man was lucky enough to claim her would be blessed indeed.

“You tell me what to do and I’ll do it. Even if you say to jump on one leg and act like a monkey.” They didn’t need to know he wasn’t sure he had the strength to do that, but he’d give it his best.

“Alright, children, let’s do this.” Jenna led him to the group, stopping near LeeLee’s head.

Goddess, they were getting ready to wake the sleeping wolf, or woman. What if she hated him, or didn’t remember him? Or heaven forbid, came out a young girl like he’d seen in the dreamscape.

“Don’t borrow trouble, Danielson.”

He whipped his head around. “Did you just quote a line from Karate Kid?”

“Wax on, wax off. I’m pretty sure Mr. Miyagi was a genius and could fix anything. Now, let’s get busy.”

Slater wasn’t sure if she was serious, but he knew she had awesome powers. He didn’t want to question her mental state. Heck, she was said to be older than dirt, so more than likely forgot more than he’d ever learn.

“I want you to place your hands over her heart. That is where you want to be. Try not to fondle her breasts.” She winked, making the other ladies groan. “Too much, too soon?” she asked.

Payton nodded. “I think so, Jennaveve.”

“Well, y’all did go and almost get them killed in the dreamscape, therefore, I am allowed bad jokes. A few of them, by the way.” Jenna settled on her knees by LeeLee’s head, then indicated each lady to take a place.

Slater looked around and wondered how he was supposed to fit in between them.

“Goodness, do I need to draw you a picture? Straddle her body, and place both palms over her heart like so. If all goes as planned, a woman will be in the place of the wolf shortly.”

He felt weird straddling the form of a wolf, but figured the Fey women knew what they were doing. Her fur was soft beneath his fingers, the steady beat of her heart reassuring as he placed first his right hand, then his left, one on top the other over her heart. His own pulse pounded out a fast rhythm. If this didn’t work, he wasn’t sure what he’d do.

Closing his eyes, he felt the first jolt of energy. The shock enclosed him in a wave of warmth, then a tide of energy unlike any he’d experienced in his entire life. The body beneath him twitched, a link clicked open, and memories flooded him of a childhood unlike his own. One filled with loneliness and sadness. Beatings behind closed doors she had to hide, unable to make a sound out of fear her parents would send her away. More warmth and love flooded him, and he knew the Fey were trying to coax LeeLee into coming out of the cocoon she’d built around herself. He added his own love and comfort to the mix, wanting her to know she’d never be hurt while he had breath in his body.

He heard growls and screams, and a terrified LeeLee racing to save the worthless parents who’d allowed an old woman to beat their child. Knowing what the noises meant, he wanted to call the child back, but knew he had to watch it play out, he watched, and waited. The scene she stumbled into was worse than he’d been prepared for. No child should ever have to face a massacre, let alone be covered in the blood of your pack. He watched in horror as LeeLee’s mother took her own life, rather than stay and become the chew toy of the pack who decimated theirs. LeeLee’s scream brought his head around, along with the ravenous wolves. They took off after the small girl, even as she ran as fast as her tiny legs would carry her. Slater kept his hands on her chest, her heart beating faster than humanly possible, making him fear she’d have a heart attack. The old woman reached out from the shadows, her smile chilling and evil. She tried to grab LeeLee, but fear lent her speed, and then he saw the bloodied gown tearing, the small girl becoming a small wolf. He wanted to cheer, at the miracle. Howls and growls followed. Little LeeLee didn’t stop running, Slater watched as she ran until she reached the highway. The sound of a diesel had him gasping, but he didn’t remove his hands, knowing instinctively he was keeping her tethered to reality. The large vehicle struck the tiny wolf, slowing, then came to a stop.

Her next memory was of waking in a clinic in wolf form, covered in blood with an IV in her. She shook off the drugs, and escaped, running again until she ran into Rasmund. There her memories became softer, her heartrate eased, her breathing went back to normal.

Slater opened his eyes as the fur beneath his fingers became soft skin. It took him several blinks of his eyes before he was able to reconcile the creature beneath him as his LeeLee. The horrors she’d faced the first six years of her life would make anyone insane, and he wasn’t sure if she would be or not. The wolf LeeLee seemed to be somewhat coherent, listening to commands, and knowing her place in Cammie’s home. How would the human react? Hell, could she speak? It took him a moment to realize he still had his hands firmly on her chest. He looked up at the Fey. Their eyes were still closed, the

energy surrounding him and LeeLee was still glowing a myriad of colors of golds, purples, and maroons. The jewel tones were beautiful, yet he wondered when or if it was okay to speak. Afraid he’d break some spell, he stayed silent, then glanced back down at LeeLee. Her white-blonde hair had replaced the bright red he’d expected. Upon further inspection, inspection, he noticed she had silver shot throughout the white tresses.

“It is done. Her wolf is sleeping, now we will wake the human,” Jenna said without opening her eyes. A slight nod of his head, like she could see him, was his answer. He’d ask the question burning in his gut after she woke. Why was she no longer red haired? What else had changed?

LeeLee jerked beneath him, gasping for air, then her eyes opened. The blue was so light they were almost clear. She raised her right arm, opened her mouth then shut it.

He grabbed her palm before it could fall with his own and brought it to his chest. “Hi,” he said the first thing that came to him.

Tears swam in the eyes that captivated him. “I’m LeeLee.” Her words were halted.

He wanted to cry with her but nodded. “Welcome back.”

“You saved me,” she said like she couldn’t believe he would.

Slater lifted her hand to his lips and kissed the palm. “I’ll always save you.”

Now that LeeLee is able to shift again, there is a need to figure out who she is. This unfortunately comes with danger, more than a couple of twists and of course her seriously hot mating with Slater.

Cassie and Keanu are part of the Smoke Jumper’s series, and I would consider A Smoke Jumper’s Christmas a prequel to this book.

Iron Wolves Bonus Novella

In this novella we find that Xan and Breezy have yet to have a child, this is weighing heavily on Breezy. As she’s heading to the clubhouse clinic to help Laikyn, a strange thing happens. One that feels almost like a vision.

At the clubhouse we first meet Kellen and Laikyn’s daughters Enzley and Everleigh then a bit later their sons Jaggar and Jaxon, these four are quadruplets. Laikyn is coming to examine Lyric as she’s close to delivery and a bit worried. There is also a surprise baby shower happening since are having a boy. Rowan and Lyric already have a girl Harlow and can use some boyish things.

Xan also has the same sort of experience that Breezy had and talks to Kellen and Jenna about it. We also find out about a pregnancy. Nope I’m not gonna say who.

You know those best laid plans, well a baby doesn’t seem to want to wait.

This is a favorite scene.

Lyric breathed through what she was pretty sure was a contraction. Dang it, she did not want to go into labor during her surprise baby shower. Although she’d told her friends she didn’t want one since she’d had one with Harlow and thought it was crazy to have another so close, they’d obviously chosen not to listen to her. Or as Syn had announced ‘You’re having a little boy, and my godson isn’t going to be wearing hand-me-down pink shit or playing with pink toys. Nope, he’s going to get manly, or boyish, new shit.’ And that was that. No arguing from Lyric would sway her. Even when she’d reassured her best friend that Rowan and she would make sure their son had boy stuff.

“Hey, you don’t look too good. You feeling alright?” Syn asked.

She turned, a smile firmly in place. “I’m fine, just having a pep talk with LeeLee and hoping this little guy doesn’t bruise my kidney with all his kicking.” Which was the truth, somewhat.

“So, you going to tell us what his name is going to be, or you going to be like those Hollywood types and wait until he’s like a few days old and then decide? You realize that can scar a kid, right?” Syn had both hands on her hips, glaring as if Lyric was committing a felony.

“We have his name picked out, but we aren’t telling a soul until he’s here.” She laughed at the low growl coming from her best friend. “Karson Styles, you stop that, right this instant.”

“I hate you, you know that, right? How am I supposed to get anything personalized? Why, I just saw the cutest little blanket on a kid inside TarJay that had its name on it. The mama was walking around, strutting her shit like she was the most awesome mama ever because she had a blankie with her kid’s name on. I could do that for chunk there if you told me his name.” She folded her arms over her chest, tapping her foot.

Lyric laughed. “Okay, first off, it’s Target, not TarJay’. Just because you make it sound fancy doesn’t make it so. Second, I’m not going to tell you my kids name just so you can have it on a blanket, although that is cool as shit. Third, I bet that mama was awesome and her kid was cute as shit, too.” All babies were cute in her estimation, but Syn didn’t agree.

“Whatever. It is so TarJay, and they have really adorable kids’ clothes.” Syn spun on her heels, yelling over her shoulder. “You suck. I’m not tellin you my kid’s name, but I’ll tell everyone else.”

She sucked in a breath, this one of shock. Syn almost sounded truthful. “Well, when you have multiples like your brother, you’ll be begging me for help,” Lyric yelled at Syn’s back.

Her friends’ steps slowed, then came to a hard stop. “That wasn’t nice, Syblic,” Syn said with a glare over her shoulder.

While she tried really hard not to laugh, she breathed through another pain. Damn, she really didn’t want to ruin her shower by going into labor. A quick look around the empty bar, save for pack members, she realized everyone she cared about had shown up. Well, the males were in the back or in Kellen’s office. But crowded into the bar were all the females who’d come bearing gifts for her and their nugget, or chunk as she and Rowan were calling him. Seven minutes apart and lasting a little over two minutes. Dang it, why were all the men in her life so darn stubborn? “Can’t you hold out for one more week and be a Christmas baby like we planned?” she whispered, her hand rubbing the hard swell.

“Hey, is he giving you a hard time?” Laikyn asked, her doctor face on.

“Can I tell you something and it be patient doc confidential?” Lyric glanced around them.

Laikyn nodded. “Well, unless it’s something that Kellen needed to know for the good of the pack.”

She thought about it for a minute. Her issue wouldn’t endanger the pack. “I’m in labor.”

“You’re in labor?” Laikyn screeched.

The entire bar quieted, turning to stare their way.

“Dang it, Lake, I said confidential, not scream like a freaking banshee,” Lyric whined.

With a groan, Laikyn put her arm around Lyric, steering her back toward the overstuffed chair they’d brought in for her. “Alright, since the secrets out, give me the deets.”

Lyric rolled her eyes, feeling Rowan’s worry pressing on her, knowing someone had shouted through the pack link to him. When she finished giving Laikyn the run down, Rowan burst through the door at a run, a frown on his face. “Lyric, what the hell? Why didn’t you tell me?”

She held her hand out to him, watching her big bad alpha ex-SEAL drop to his knees, his lips going straight to her stomach first. “I didn’t want to worry you, just yet. We’ve got hours, if not days still. Remember Harlow, she had me in active labor for two days before she made her appearance.” Goddess, she hoped this baby didn’t do the same thing. Where Harlow was a tiny bundle of joy, she knew this one was going to be a big rolling bundle of action.

A few scary moments, and a very large baby boy is born to Lyric and Rowan.

I got a kick out of the pool and the winner. Xan and Breezy discuss what they saw and are very eager to get on with ‘practicing’.

Oh, I almost forgot, there was a drawing for who would play Santa and Kellen lost or won, however you want to look at that.

Lots of laughter, some tears and plenty of sizzle.

I’ll be starting book five shortly.
