Elite Metal – Book One in the Elite Warriors Series
For decades the US Marines funded a top-secret unit known as
Elite Recon. A deadly group of men and women sent to infiltrate dozens of
countries completely undetected. Mission objectives so extreme casualties were
not only probable, but expected.
The current batch of operatives had returned from hundreds
of assignments unscathed…until one mission went horribly wrong. Several men
lost their lives and the group disbanded. The remaining leathernecks were scattered
in the wind with new identities. They were told to blend in. Be normal. Or face
being forever silenced just like their fallen brothers.
Now, two years later, each living member of the group is kidnapped
and given a chance to make things right. But this time they’re no longer under
the thumb of Uncle Sam. A mysterious private backer who knows about their past
has brought them back together. No longer are they forced to turn a blind eye
to the lost and forsaken.
A new life. A new future…Elite Metal.
Scorching romance from Anna Alexander and Jennifer Kacey, Heather Long, Sabrina

Sterling’s Seduction
By Sabrina York
When Sterling spots a reporter masquerading as a waitress in
a dingy bar in Deep Ellum, he suspects she’s investigating the team. And that’s
something he just cannot allow to happen. Too many lives are at stake. He will
do everything in his power to learn the truth—even seduce her. And to stop her
story from coming out? He might even tie her to the bed.
Nothing is off the table when it comes to keeping his
brothers safe. Nothing. It’s a damn shame she’s everything he’s ever wanted.
It’s a damn shame her touch warms his cold, dead heart.
READ AN EXCERPT
As she rounded the corner, her steps stalled.
Because there he was, leaning against his bike. Waiting for
her.
Well, she hoped he was waiting for her. When he saw her, he
unfolded his long legs and stood.
“Did you change your mind?” she asked, trying for a flippant
tone.
His beautiful eyebrow arched. “About what?”
“Taking me home?” Might as well be brash.
He gestured to his bike. “My alternator is shot. I’m waiting
for a ride.”
“Ah.” Why disappointment flooded her was a mystery. Or not.
“Was there…an offer on the table?” His voice was a low melody
that danced on the skeins of air. It was annoying. And not.
“Hey. I’m not the one who walked away.” She tried not to let
her petulance show.
He stepped closer and searched her face. She let him. Not
hiding at all. Or not hiding everything. She let her interest show.
“Let’s get one thing straight, Pigtails—”
“Pigtails?”
“Yeah. Pigtails.” He flicked her hair, reminding her how
she’d pulled it up. She’d been going for backwoods innocent, but it might have
backfired on her. With a harsh movement, she yanked out the rubber bands and
her hair fell around her face. His lashes flickered. Something that looked like
hunger washed over his features.
“What do you want to get straight?”
His jaw clenched. “I don’t like questions. Pure and simple.
Understood?”
The way he said the word, with a thread of dominance in his
tone, sent a shiver through her. She lowered her eyes and nodded. “Understood.
So…do you? Want to come home with me? No questions asked?”
“Maybe.” He checked his watch. “Looks like my ride isn’t
going to show, anyway.”
Hardly the flood of interest she would have preferred.
Irritation rippled. “Or I can give you a lift home.” And when his cheek
bunched, “Or call you a cab.”
“I’d rather go home with you.” He stepped closer, too close,
and pulled her against him. His fingers were harsh on her flesh, his insistence
alluring. Yes, this was what she wanted. Something rough. Something ruthless.
Something demanding.
Hunger rose in her, swamping her desire to finish this story
and get back home. Hell, she could probe him with questions later. After. This
need was far more pressing.
When he lowered his head, she caught a whiff of his
aftershave and her knees locked. He was tall, muscled and rough around the
edges. Just the kind of guy she’d always craved.
His lips touched hers and she nearly collapsed. It was a
wild rush, a tumult of sensation. For a starved woman, as she was, it was
irresistible. She couldn’t help but kiss him back, a manic frenzy. Her passion
seemed to spur his on, and he wrapped himself around her, tipped his head and
deepened the kiss. His hands roved over her back, her hips, her ass. Nothing
tentative. Nothing tender.
When he lifted his head, she was a bowl of Jell-O. Ready and
willing.
“So do you want to?” Her voice caught on the invitation.
“Yeah.” He yanked her tighter and his cock gouged into her
belly, hard and needy. “Yeah. I want to. Just no more questions.”
No more questions.
Right.

Review of Kairos by KJ Coakley

Kairos

Book one of the Enmortals Series

Publisher: K. J. Coakley (June 12, 2014)

This book was a gift from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Blurb:

What if the enticing man who has just seized your every sense enlightens you to realms beyond our dimension? Can that spark of love withstand a war to protect mankind? Kairos: An Enmortals Series Novel by K. J. Coakley is the spellbinding novel that reveals that the deepest love need not be confined to the trappings of one world.

The first in a series of adult paranormal romances, Kairos swirls in mankind, magic, and mythology as it chronicles the first blush of yearning between Sulwen Macgregor, a shy and sheltered college senior, and Logan Thatcher, a mesmerizing former playboy with arresting good looks, an offbeat sense of humor, and an ironclad moral code. When the two meet, Sulwen has no inkling that she soon will embark on an odyssey that not only exposes Logan as other than mortal, but uncovers astonishing aspects of her own being as well.

As Logan saves Sulwen from fast-approaching peril, the two must discover if their love is truly without bounds and strong enough to fend off adversaries far more craven than they ever could fathom. With wild imagination, otherworldly passion, and heart-pumping action, Kairos goes where no human being has dared, all in the name of love.

My Review:

As you all know I love romance so adding a paranormal note to it just gives it more spice.

Sulwen Macgregor has only one more semester of classes left before graduation.  She is looking forward to a summer off, a lighter work schedule and maybe a nice vacation.

Then she meets Logan Thatcher, first at the store where she works, then as a blind date arranged by her roommate, Tonya. Tonya ran into Logan and his friend Thad at the local coffee shop and somehow ended up with dates.

The sexual tension is high between Logan and Sulwen but there are undercurrents of something else from the moment they meet.

Their second date was a bit disturbing to me, because it became a weekend.  They hardly know one another. But that’s also where I found a favorite scene.

The huge exit signs on the interstate and his elated smile were what gave it away. We’re going to Busch Gardens. I haven’t been to a theme park since I was a little girl, and a small, childlike thrill runs through me. I’m going to ride every roller coaster they have. I can see them in the distance as we pull up into the massive parking lot.

Logan pulls the SUV into a marked space. While he’s rolling up the windows and locking up the car, I step out and around for a better view of the park. It’s so big I can’t fathom seeing it all in one day, but I want to try.

Logan steps up beside me and slides his hand in mine. I squeeze and grin up at him. He tugs me, and we walk toward the trolley stop.

At the front entrance, I’m overwhelmed with the smells and sounds and all of the people milling about. This place is amazing. I spin around in a small circle, taking it all in. Logan leans down and kisses my cheek. His lips are warm, and the touch of them is like a burst of sunshine upon me. God, I love his touch. He’s so open with me that I fall into an easy familiarity when I’m with him. It’s like I’ve known him forever, and I can finally be myself without holding back.

I don’t have to try to be what he wants me to be because it’s the real me that he wants. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders, and it’s all because of Logan. I’ve known him for such a short time, but there’s something more between us than I’ve ever had before.

“You said you’ve never traveled, so I found the perfect place to take you a little bit of everywhere.” His smile spreads to his eyes, and he looks so happy in that moment. I tiptoe up to his mouth, kiss him soundly on the lips, and then abruptly pull away.

I’m grinning from ear to ear. This is going to be a spectacular day. I can feel him chuckle when he hugs me. We pull apart, and he grabs my hand and leads me toward England.

Best. Day. Ever.

Nearly twelve hours later, I awake when Logan lifts me from the car. I snuggle into his chest and wrap my arms around his neck. He smells like funnel cake and corn dogs. I smile and relax into him. He’s so strong that he carries me with effortless ease. His heart pounds a lulling beat beneath my cheek and ear, and before I know it, my eyes are heavy again, and I drift back off to sleep.

No question the sex is steamy and downright sizzles.  As soon as these two get close to each other it’s only a matter of time before they are going at it like rabbits.

As the whole truth comes out about why they met and Sulwen understands what her name has to do with his purpose in finding her, the inevitable trip to Scotland becomes reality.

Sulwen trains to fight things she cannot even imagine. When things heat up and Sulwen ends up kidnapped and Logan injured, a whole new aspect of the Barrier arises.

I really wish Sulwen had more of feelings of being different/more earlier in the book.   For me, everything seemed to happen too quickly without enough explanation.  Another thing that bothered me was all the loose ends, and the epilogue adds more questions instead of answering them.

I need to read the second book for answers I hope I get.

I give this book 3 out of 5 purrs.

My Review:

It always amazes me how totally immersed in a story I get.  From the very beginning I was sucked into the suspense, missing files all leading back to Senator Beau Beckett.  A man named Smith threatening assassination and a bomb in a warehouse.  Even with all of this the Senator is not taking it seriously. At least not until Judd Wolfe a Federal Security Protection agent comes on the scene and the threats go up a notch to include the Senator’s daughter, Angel.

With Angel and Beau safe at home, the realization of the amount of knowledge the assassin has makes the normal path of protection less than ideal.  Judd is determined to keep them safe and do his best to keep his hands off the Senator.

As arrangements are made from transport to secure locations, Beau gives Judd his personal journal with notes about the gifts from when his wife was alive and everything leading up to the current events.

When their hands connect over the thumb drive, Beau and Judd both feel a deeper connection, and Beau takes the initiative. This is one of my favorite scenes in the book.

Passion darkened the agent’s chocolate brown eyes, luring Beau closer. His gaze dropped to Judd’s lips and Beau wondered how the other man would taste. Was he gentle under the hard exterior?

Without a conscious thought, Beau leaned forward and pressed his lips to Judd’s. Every muscle trembled as Judd returned the kiss, thrusting his tongue through the seam of Beau’s lips.

Beau opened and swirled his tongue around the other man’s. His impossibly hard cock pressed painfully against the zipper of his slacks.

Judd’s hand glided over Beau’s thigh then up to cup him. Gripping his wrist, Beau broke the kiss and held the agent’s desire-drunk stare. “Wait.”

“I can’t. I’ve wanted you from the first moment I saw you in that courtroom all those years ago.”

Fuck.

Beau stood, linked his fingers with Judd’s and yanked him to a stand. “My room is behind you to the right off the kitchen. I’m going to check on Angel and lock up the house.”

One dark brow rose at the same time the corners of Judd’s sensual lips did. “I’ll lock up while you check on Angel.”

The temperature goes up from here.  The passion and intensity combined with the urgency to draw out and eliminate the assassin, makes this a page turner not to be missed. You might want to have a fan and a couple of cold drinks handy as well.

I give this book 5 Contented PURRS!

Bravo Lia! What is next on your wicked little agenda?  I just can’t wait.

Excerpt:

“I don’t need a bodyguard.” Beau fisted his hands atop his desk.

“It’s not your choice. The orders came from—”

Beau slammed a palm against the wood, silencing his chief of staff, then took some deep, slow breaths. Notes on postcards weren’t reason enough to call in a Federal Protective Service agent to cover his personal security. “I know where the orders came from.”

FPS didn’t usually play babysitter unless the orders came from the President, which told Beau they had made a threat assessment and the results must be grave. Yet, no one would explain to him how serious. With a sigh, he sat back in his chair and tapped his fingers against the desktop. “It was two separate incidents, both of them accidents.”

Jaw tightening, Greta folded her arms and stared at him. No doubt his chief of staff wanted to choose her words carefully. If she’d known about the notes, she wouldn’t have waited this long to escalate the security issue. “I have to disagree, sir. Those so-called accidents were avoidable, and happened in public places.”

She pointed to the file she placed on his desk upon entering his office. “The file has everything you need to know about your new security detail.”

Exhaling a heavy, growl-like breath, Beau opened the file and scanned over the details.

Judd Wolfe

Intelligence Security Lead

Federal Protective Services, Homeland Security

“Would you like me to cancel your dinner reservations?”

Beau raised a brow and returned his attention to Greta. “No. I’ll just take my babysitter with me.”

She pursed her lips. “Judd Wolfe is not a babysitter. He’s a highly trained operative.”

“I can read. Thank you, Greta. That is all.”

When she didn’t move, he raised his gaze to meet hers and lifted a brow. With a huff, she pivoted on her heels and left. Beau returned his attention to the file. Wolfe had served in the Air Force from the time he turned eighteen until three years ago. The records in front of Beau said it was an honorable discharge due to an injury in the field, but gave no details. Figures. Military documents listed only the most basic information.

Nothing else.

A heavy knock on the door drew his attention. It swung inward, revealing a tall man with lean muscles that filled out his white button down and black slacks well. Even the briefcase in his hand didn’t take away from his attractiveness. Beau studied him from his shaved head to the strong, clean-shaven, yet familiar face before he locked onto the agent’s stern stare. The dark brown depths told him nothing of the man’s emotions. Cold and uninviting. The memory of a younger version of the man before him flashed across Beau’s mind. Then it dawned on him. Beau had represented Judd Wolfe a couple of times during his time as a JAG.

“I see the Air Force didn’t make you less of an ass.” Beau watched one dark brow rise.

My Review:

I fell in love with Summer on the first page of Chapter 1.  She is funny, determined and full of life. A skinwalker who prefers the form of a Raven to that of her natural cougar.  The Raven that suits her better and gives her more freedom.

Brick on the other hand seems to have lost all of his fight after his ill-fated challenge of the Alpha. Brought to this isolated cabin by Gee, his friend and a bear shifter, to heal both body and mind he doesn’t seem to want to do either.  Until Summer takes things into her own hands, ummm beak.

I really love the beginning and the build up in this book. It is light and full of fun.  Although I knew it couldn’t last without something going awry, was very refreshing.

One of my favorite scenes is when Brick shifts in front of her the first time.

One night, when the moon glowed full, Brick had come out of the cabin and howled up at the glittering orb, his voice hoarse, harsh, ragged. Caught in the grip of a compulsion he clearly could no longer fight. His clothes had seemed to choke him and he stripped them off down to his skin. Standing naked, face tilted to the light, he’d let the glow bathe him in silver.

That may have been the moment. The moment when everything inside her shattered, became still, reformed, truly recognized the male before her. When her heart, already lent to him on a part-time basis, became his. Completely. Irrevocably.

The considerable muscles he’d built up over the years took on added bulk as he dropped to his hands and knees, the air shimmering around him. His face twisted, his grimace somewhere between agony and orgasm, as his head grew, elongated, his nose lengthening and broadening into a muzzle, his mouth, his lips widening, stretching to accommodate fangs. His hair, oh. So sleek, so dense. So like the wolf he’d carved for her. His fur looked soft, lighter than his human hair, rich and tawny as butterscotch or melted caramel.

Something happened to her the first time she watched him shift. Something raw. Something metaphysical. Something eternal. And undeniably hot.

Athletic, graceful. Predatory and dangerous. She loved watching him shift, watching him running in his wolf form. Born into a clan of nocturnal cats, familiar and comfortable with the night, she soared into the skies above him, keeping pace, between him and the mother moon.

Whenever he ran, she flew with him.

Did he know?

Of course, he knew. Except for those first few weeks of the healing process, when he’d seemed soul-dead and oblivious to the world, nothing escaped him. He possessed a wolf’s acute and finely honed predatory senses, his innate skills so far beyond a mere human’s ability to see, to scent, to hear.

At dawn after that first full moon, he’d lain spread-eagled on the sweet, dewy grass, on his back in a fragrant wild-flower strewn meadow some distance from the cabin, his broad shoulders and huge chest heaving, sweat drying on his human skin, on the ridged muscles rippling from his slick pecs, down his flat abdomen, detouring to the chiseled ropes bracketing his carved hips. A dark ribbon of hair began below his navel, pointing the way, like a neon arrow, down his sin trail of delight. Jackpot.

Her mind had blanked and she lost control, shifting so abruptly into human form she’d nearly toppled out of her tree. Heat poured over her, through her, as if she’d been tossed into a boiling cauldron. She’d never really thought about sex before. Suddenly it was all she could think about.

Her breathing had hitched, her mouth hanging open. She took in shallow breaths, huffing them out. Panting. By the spirit of the Great Hawk. Panting. And her respiratory difficulty had nothing to do with the exertion of her flight, with their race in the moonlight. And everything to do with the potent, raw male strength displayed before her. Good thing the abundant summer foliage had kept her out of sight.

She hadn’t been able to tear her gaze from him. Her vocabulary failed her after spectacular. Magnificent. Powerful. Someone smarter than she needed to invent new words for this male.

As they grow to realize they are fated mates the story heats up.  The sex is both steamy and emotional.  The conflicts intense and the outcome, well, you’ll just have to read it for yourself.

Bravo, Taryn for this fun yet intense Shifter story.

I give this book 5 Contented PURRS

Keep reading the excerpt is another of my favorite scenes.

EXCERPT:
She did not move, except to lower her raised arm from its frozen position. “Why do you call me that…? Annabel Lee?”
“I don’t have another name.”
“Summer,” she said. “I’m Summer.”
Yeah. Def. When the berries plumped sweetest. “Suits you.” His raging arousal made the words hoarse and jagged. Too harsh for this gentle female. “Turn,” he murmured. “I want to see your face.” A low growl escaped him before he could bite it back. “Your breasts.”
She turned then, slowly through the water, rounding to face him.
He sucked in his breath, his heart slamming against his chest. She was stunning and glorious. The beads of water rolling down her golden body sparkled in the sun. She glistened. All natural. No makeup. No artifice. Everything a female should be. And more. Much more.
Another pheromone cloud engulfed him. Her eyes went large and rounded, as if she guessed she’d zapped him with her hormonal lures, but couldn’t help emitting her sex juice any more than he could. Her nose twitched and she sighed, as if enveloped in a vat of melted chocolate, or whatever the fuck his own mating scent smelled like. He could only hope he gave off an aroma as rich and delicious as she did.
He struggled to control the raw savagery of his attraction and had to tear his eyes from her face. But her breasts…God, her breasts. Full and high, the exact size to fill his large hands, rose tips jutting toward him. He remembered how she’d touched herself, how much he’d wanted to replace her hands with his. Hell. He wanted to bury his face between those breasts, lapping at her, licking and sucking, take each one into his mouth, between his lips, grazing the pointed nipples with his teeth until he tore moans of delight from her.
His throat closed, his tongue swelling, filling his suddenly dry mouth, cutting off his ability to utter either animal sounds or inane words. After a beat or two of silence, she glanced away.
“What do you think?” Not shy exactly. Expectant. An undercurrent of doubt laced her question, as if she could not bear to disappoint him, and did not know what to make of his continued speechlessness.
“Perfect.” He rubbed his eyes. “Ah, Christ. You’re perfect.”
“No, I’m not.”
“You are to me.”

Blurb:

No More Mr. Nice Guy…

The moment AJ Walsh sees the sexy, tattooed pixie walk up to his bar, it’s lust at first sight. He’s always been labeled the “nice” guy―opening doors, buying flowers, and never, ever having one-night stands. But with this wicked little angel with red lips and unfathomably dark eyes? Oh, yeah. Tonight, “nice” has nothing to do with it…

Brett Conlon is trying to convince her family that she’s put away her reckless wild girl side for good. Nothing―and no one―could be better for her reputation than golden boy AJ Walsh. So they make a deal: if he plays The Good Boyfriend for her family, he can be a very, very bad boy with her. Now their one naughty night is about to turn into a whole lot of trouble…

My Review:

Once again, as seems to be a developing habit, I am starting a series at the latest book and not the beginning.  Thankfully this one is a delightful standalone.

When an all around good guy decides to let his hair down and well roar, what better time than when a gorgeous little tattooed pixie enters his world.  What starts out as a one night stand for AJ Walsh and Brett Conlon takes a surprising turn when Brett’s brother shows up at her apartment to pick her up for work.

This was laugh out loud funny, and I was shaking my head that Rob didn’t get it from the beginning. Easily one of my favorite scenes in the book.

“How’ve you been, man?” Rob charged forward to pull AJ in for a macho side hug, which he uneasily returned.

“I’m good. You?”

“Doing great.” As Rob took a step back, the joy he’d been emitting reverted back to distrust. His gaze lowered to the towel slung around AJ’s hips, as if he’d just noticed the pink monstrosity.

“What are you doing here?” Rob asked warily. “Where’s my sister?”

Sister? Oh crap. Brett was Rob’s sister?

But a hasty examination of the other man’s face was all it took to spot the resemblance. They had the same eyes, AJ realized, though while Rob’s features were sharply masculine, Brett’s were soft and delicate. Not to mention that Rob Conlon was a frickin’ mountain compared to Brett’s pixie frame.

“Seriously, where the hell is she?”

AJ was about to answer, but Brett’s calm voice cut him off.

“I’m right here.” Like a graceful feline, she sauntered out of the bedroom wearing an oversize T-shirt that hung to her knees.

AJ saw through her composed facade. She’d clearly thrown her shirt on in a hurry—the damn thing was inside out—and her hair was noticeably tousled from sleep…and other much less innocent activities. AJ remembered tangling his fingers through that inky-black hair many, many times last night. Pulling on it, too. Hard. Before he could stop it, a parade of vivid memories marched into his head, the most prominent involving Brett’s lips wrapped around his cock. He had to will his lower body not to respond, because the last thing he needed was to spring a boner in front of Brett’s Brother.  Christ.  That would go over like a punch to the face.  A literal one, most likely. With AJ’s face being the one in question.

“What are…?” Rob looked from AJ to his sister. “I didn’t realize you two knew each other.”

AJ would have given his left arm to be able to fade into his surroundings. The friendly reception he’d received from Rob had all but disappeared, and the man was currently eyeing him like he’d pickpocketed his wallet or some shit.

Gone was the old friend from high school—replaced by a big brother in full-on protection mode.

“Well, we do know each other.” Brett’s tone was flippant, but AJ didn’t miss the flush rising in her cheeks. “What are you doing here? I thought we talked about calling before you stop by.”

Rob ignored her. His scowl deepened as he turned to AJ. “Why are you at my sister’s apartment at nine in the morning?”

AJ had to choke back a laugh. Talk about the most obvious question on the planet.  He was wearing a pink towel, for fuck’s sake.

On the same token, there was no way in hell he wasadmitting to Brett’s brother that he’d picked her up at the club last night and brought her home for sex.

To his relief, Brett didn’t seem interested in sharing thatjuicy tidbit, either. “What are you doing here?” she repeated.

“Why is Walsh here?” her brother countered.

Brett’s hands curled into small fists at her sides, and AJcould tell she was trying very hard not to lose her temper.

He searched his own brain for a suitable response, one that didn’t feature the works one-night stand or hot, sweaty sex, but again, Brett beat him to the punch.

“He’s here because he’s my boyfriend.”

From here it becomes a journey for Brett and AJ to really figure out who they are, both in and out of a relationship. But most importantly AJ must come to terms with the fact that he isn’t perfect and doesn’t have to be, ever, not for anyone.

I truly enjoyed this book. It was mostly light and fun, with shades of revenge and more than a few obstacles. Now I am wondering which of Brett’s brother’s will be the subject of the next in book from Elle Kennedy.

I give this book 5 contented purrs.

Chapter One

“Hey, hot stuff, what do you say you meet me out front after you get off?” the busty blonde cooed as she sauntered up to the bar. “And then we can get each other off…”

AJ Walsh was torn between groaning and laughing. He found himself on the receiving end of some seriously shameless pick-up lines on a nightly basis, but this one was more blatantly sexual than most, accompanied by the seductive batting of mascara-thick eyelashes and a lewd display of lip-licking.

“Sorry, sweetheart. I’m flattered, but I’ve got a girlfriend,” he told his would-be pursuer.

“So?” She didn’t even blink.

He raised a brow. “So I’m not on the market.”

The blonde wrinkled her nose in distaste. “Loser.”

She took her teased hair, skintight dress, and four-inch heels, and sashayed away from the counter without ordering a thing.

The second she was gone, AJ released the laughter bubbling in his throat. Well. That was new. Being called a loser for not wanting to cheat on his girlfriend with a clearly drunk chick at a nightclub? If that made him a loser, then he didn’t want to be a winner.

On the other hand, he was a liar, because he definitely didn’t have a girlfriend at the moment. Nope, he was flying solo and hating it, but after three years of tending bar, he’d learned that sometimes a little white lie was the best way to get the more persistent women off his back.

He glanced at the other two bartenders, pleased to see them hard at work slinging drinks and chatting with the customers. Henry and Sue were his most reliable employees, and he made a point to always schedule them on Friday, the club’s busiest night. Technically he didn’t even need to be there tonight—his people had everything covered—but he enjoyed making drinks and getting to know his clientele.

When he’d first opened Sin with his two best friends, it had been a no-brainer as to who would handle what. Gage, the toughest and most intense of the three, was in charge of security and oversaw their team of bouncers. Reed, the most antisocial, worked in the upstairs office area and dealt with the business end of things. And as the “people person” of the trio, AJ tended bar and managed the servers.

The arrangement suited him just fine, and since their grand opening three years ago, Sin had quickly become one of the most popular clubs in downtown Boston. It had even turned a profit in its first year of business, which AJ was pretty damn proud of.

The only downside to his job was the onslaught of graphic come-ons from women he had no interest in, a turnoff that was kinda ironic considering he was a thirty- year-old, red-blooded male with a healthy libido. Other men would kill to trade places with him, AJ was fully aware of that, but he wasn’t about to take advantage of the usually intoxicated females who threw themselves at him. It didn’t feel right.

He’d never indulged in a one-night stand, but if he ever did, he wanted it to be with a woman who was coherent enough to know what she was doing.

As a dark head entered his line of vision, AJ voiced his standard question without even glancing at the customer. “What can I get you?”

No answer.

In the beat of silence, he focused on the woman in front of him, and his breath hitched when he got lost in a pair of bottomless brown-bordering-on-black eyes. He shifted his gaze, soaking in her delicate features, full red lips, and shoulder-length raven hair before doing a sweep of her petite body, clad in all black.

Her tank top left her arms bare, which meant he didn’t miss her tattoos—a painstakingly detailed angel on her left forearm, a cluster of stars on her right biceps, and a ring of roses around her left wrist. The tats were surprisingly feminine and insanely sexy, and he suddenly had the craziest urge to strip her naked and find out if she had more ink beneath her tight top and skinny jeans.

Man. It’d been a long time since he’d experienced total lust overload. He encountered attractive women all the frickin’ time, but this tiny pixie of a woman was more than attractive. The sexy combo of fragility and badassness hardened his cock, and he shifted his position so that the counter hid his lower body better.

When he realized she still hadn’t spoken, he raised his voice over the pounding dance beat reverberating through the main floor. “What’ll it be?”

She snapped out of whatever trance she’d fallen into, but still looked startled. A tad wary, too, but he had to be imagining it.

“Three margaritas and a Coke,” she replied after another long pause.

“Coming right up.” It was difficult to tear his gaze off her, but he forced himself to act professional, sliding to the other end of the counter to prepare her drinks.

He jiggled the stainless-steel margarita shaker more vigorously than necessary, a sense of nervous energy overtaking him. Fuck. He wanted to talk to her. Find out her name.

Convince her to go home with him.

And wasn’t that a mind-boggler. He spent most nights turning down offers for sex, and all of a sudden he was imagining screwing a complete stranger?

His friends would die of shock if they could read his thoughts right now. Gage and Reed viewed him as Mr. Nice Guy, the man who held doors open for his dates and didn’t sleep with a girl until they’d been seeing each other for a proper amount of time. The guy who offered women his shoulder to cry on and bought them flowers for every damn occasion.

But he supposed they had every right to see him as the nicest guy on the planet. It was the image he tried to project most of the time, the label he’d been striving his entire life to live up to.

Christ, if people only knew. How hard he worked to be that polite, dependable guy everyone could rely on. How badly he fought to suppress the wild urges that arose more often than not. How frustrating it was to dutifully play the part of prodigal son, good friend, reliable boyfriend.

He didn’t always succeed, though. Sometimes the need to truly let go couldn’t be ignored. He had to ease it, and in the past, he’d used fighting to do that. He’d heard that people frequently used sex or violence as an outlet for release, as a way to feel alive, and he couldn’t deny that his days as an MMA fighter had certainly soothed the darker, restless part of himself that he usually hid from the world. Sex, on the other hand, didn’t achieve the same result. It had always been more intimate for him, tangled up with love and relationships and all that emotional stuff.

But for some strange reason, the raven-haired woman at the counter had unleashed his carnal, reckless urges. Because suddenly the idea of going home with a stranger had become very, very appealing…

“You gonna take those over to the customer? Or just keep staring at them?”

His head jerked at Sue’s teasing voice. Ignoring his aching cock, he glanced down, realizing that the drinks he’d poured were now sitting on the bar top waiting to be delivered.

“Naah, I’ve got it. Just spaced out for a second.” He plastered on a smile, then carried the drinks over to where the woman was waiting—and staring. Staring hard, in fact, and her plump lips were puckered in the tiniest of frowns.

Unease washed over him, but he tried to ignore it. “Three margaritas and one Coke,” he announced.

She gave a polite smile in return. Very, very polite…so polite it was clearly forced, and his wariness only heightened.

“Thanks,” she said tightly. “How much do I owe you?”

“Eighteen bucks.”

His gaze stayed on her as she dug around in her purse for her wallet. Her body language was as stiff as her voice, a clear indication that she was ticked off about something.

“Here. Keep the change.” She dropped a twenty on the counter, then lifted her head and noticed him staring. “What?” she said irritably.

“You okay there? You look kinda pissed.” His eyes narrowed as a thought occurred to him. “Is anyone giving you a hard time? The crowd’s a little wilder than usual tonight—say the word and I’ll sic one of my bouncers on whoever’s bugging you.”

His concern didn’t spark warmth or gratitude, but more hostility. “I’m just peachy, pal. And FYI—if someone was harassing me, I’d take care of it myself.”

He studied her slim, no taller than five-two frame, his lips twitching in amusement. “Uh-huh. I’m sure you would, angel.”

“I might look small, but trust me, I can kick some serious ass,” she retorted.

She picked up two of the margaritas and took an abrupt step away.

AJ spoke before she could hurry off. “Is it something I said?”

A cloud of annoyance continued to hover over her. “Nope. Thanks for the drinks. I’ll be back in a sec to grab these two. Make sure no one messes with them, okay?”

This time she almost made it three steps before he stopped her. And this time he didn’t do it with words, but by rounding the counter, then leaving it entirely to come to her side.

Her mouth partially opened as she tilted her head to gaze up at him. “What are you doing?”

Rather than answer, he gave a quick shout in the direction of the counter. “Yo! Henry, I’m taking a break.” He picked up the two glasses that remained on the counter.

“Seriously, what are you doing?” she demanded.

“Carrying these drinks back to your table. And…”

The swell of music must have drowned out his words, because she leaned in closer. “What?” she yelled.

A rush of dizziness hit him as her intoxicating scent filled his nostrils. Lord, she smelled good. Like roses in full bloom, with a trace of lavender and a hint of something entirely feminine.

He repeated himself, his tone loud and firm. “And then I plan on figuring out what I did to piss you off.”

“Oh, for Pete’s sake. This isn’t Cheers—I’m not going to have a heart-to-heart with a bartender, okay? Go back to work. I can carry my own drinks.”

He ignored her aggravated response. “Where are you sitting?”

She sighed with visible unhappiness, but he wasn’t about to back down. His original intentions of flirting with her had temporarily been sidelined. Right now he was more interested in finding out what he’d done to put that frown on her sexy mouth. He had no doubt that this was wholly personal—the way she was scowling at him made it clear she was pissed off at him.

Without a word, she set off in the other direction, threading through the crowd that packed the club like sardines. AJ stayed hot on her heels, inhaling her delicious fragrance with each breath. How was it that in a room permeated with perfume, cologne, and sweat, he only seemed to be breathing in her?

They reached one of the tall tables spanning the back wall, and once they’d set the drinks down, his frowning pixie quickly raised the Coke to her lips, sucking hard on the straw while avoiding his eyes.

AJ watched her drink the soda, thoughtful. “So you’re the Coke of the bunch. Wasn’t expecting that.”

She drained half the glass before answering in a terse voice. “I’m the DD.” Then, ignoring him completely, she turned to the dance floor and waved at someone he couldn’t see. She gestured to the margaritas, then made a cigarette- smoking motion with her hand and pointed to the side exit.

AJ glimpsed a slender blonde emerging from the dance floor to tend to the drinks, but the second he’d turned his head, the woman at his side tried to make her escape.

“Thanks for bringing the drinks. Have a good night.” Her words came out in a rush.

She darted away, but AJ was equally fast, trailing after her with ease. “Where are you running off to?”

“I need some fresh air. It’s hot in here.”

Okay, he was totally treading into stalker territory, yet he couldn’t stop himself from following her toward the exit and right out the door.

Silence greeted them in the alley between Sin and the adjacent building, broken by the occasional car honk or tire squeal from the main road beyond them. The cool spring breeze brushed over his bare arms, but he didn’t mind the chill. He was too focused on his pixie’s irritated face, which shone beneath the light fixture over the door.

“You’re still here,” she said flatly.

“Yup.” He cocked his head. “And you’re just telling lies all over the place, huh?”

Those mesmerizing dark eyes narrowed. “What the hell does that mean?”

“You just mimed to your friend that you’re coming out for a smoke.” He shrugged. “But you’re not lighting up. And you told me I didn’t do anything to piss you off, but obviously I did. So…” Another shrug. “Lies.”

There was a pause.

And then she exploded.

“I pretended I was going for a cigarette so I wouldn’t have to explain to my friend that I was actually trying to get away from this nosy bartender who won’t leave me alone! Dude, why are you even out here? Do you harass every chick who orders a drink from you? Maybe I should be siccing one of your bouncers on you.”

He sighed. “Tell me what I did to upset you, angel, and then I’ll go.”

“Would you stop calling me that?” she grumbled.

“What—angel? Why would I do that when it suits you oh so well?”

He brought his hand close to the tattoo on her forearm, his fingers lingering in the air. He hadn’t planned on touching her, but those dark eyes that fascinated him so damn much went heavy-lidded, and then she tentatively leaned into his outstretched fingertips.

As he gently skimmed the tattoo, she let out a shaky exhale, and AJ’s groin promptly stirred again. He traced the outstretched wings of the ethereal figure inked on her skin, then followed the angel’s wispy dress to the tangle of vines at her feet.

Lord, her skin was hot to the touch. Silky smooth. And he didn’t miss the throbbing of her pulse at the base of her slender throat, or the way her small breasts rose as she drew a deep breath.

Oh yeah. She liked having his hand on her skin. Just as much as he liked putting it there.

AJ shifted his feet again, praying her gaze wouldn’t drop south. The bulge straining against his zipper was impossible to hide. His pants suddenly felt too frickin’ tight, and his primal reaction to this woman made his head spin. He was usually more controlled than this, but damn it, there was no controlling the erection trying to poke right through his pants.

Or the relentless need to kiss the living daylights out of her.

“Do you really not remember me?” she blurted out. He froze. “Do we know each other?”
