After nearly thirty years of active duty, retired US Navy SEAL Commander Gabriel Michaels has finally found peace. No tangoes, no red tape, no women — just his rifle, his fishing pole, and his loyal coon hound on a pristine piece of lakefront heaven.

But when the Assistant Director of Homeland Security asks for his help, he can’t say no to his old friend. Especially when the stakes are so high.

As a single, mature, working woman, Virginia Miller’s life isn’t exactly filled with suspense and intrigue. Her job as administrative assistant to one of the wealthiest men in the free world means her days involve a lot of work and little time to play.

That all changes when her boss goes missing and she suddenly finds herself in “protective custody” with the most infuriating man on the planet. Not only does Gabriel believe her employer is a traitor to their country, but that she’s the key to taking him down.

The most ironic thing of all is… he’s right.

When Silas Branson intrudes on his serene, private life, Gabe Michaels knows he will help out, even though he verbally denies it. Finding the son of the man responsible for the deaths of his team members could possibly lead to the connection to stop the arrogant extremely wealthy Darius Kristikos. Gabe is a package deal though, his dog Fred goes with him or it’s a no go.

Cristos Kristikos has gone missing, seemingly vanished without a trace. His personal assistant Virginia is worried, at the very least he texts her to let her know he’s okay when he pulls stunts like this. Not this time and that’s cause for concern. It’s also putting a lot of stress on Virginia, she’s the only American on his personal staff and even after ten years she’s considered an outsider to Greek staff.

Gabe begins this investigation by interviewing the staff, he is not impressed with them, it all seems rehearsed, precise and they really don’t seem concerned at all. That is until he meets with Virginia Miller.

This is a favorite scene.

Aware of Commander Michaels’s assessing gaze, Virginia moved across the office to the small sitting area, where two matching loveseat-sized sofas faced each other with a coffee table between them. She preferred the casual, friendly feel the setup provided, as opposed to the usual impersonal office chairs.

“Please, won’t you sit down?”

“Thank you.” He did, selecting the seat opposite hers. She was glad she’d had the foresight to brew a fresh pot of coffee after lunch and snag some snacks from the kitchen. Knowing Gregory, he’d instructed the staff not to offer the commander lunch, probably hoping it would see him on his way faster.

“May I offer you some water or coffee? A light snack?” she asked, indicating the tray that held a carafe, two mugs, and a small plate of finger foods.
“Coffee would be great, thanks,” he replied. She poured them both a cup. “Black?” she guessed, to which he nodded. She added light cream to hers. After a moment’s thought, she tipped the bowl of cut fruit onto a plate and filled it with water from the pitcher and put it on the floor for Fred.

“That’s very kind of you, thank you.”

Virginia looked up, drawn in by the intensity of those green eyes once again. They were the eyes of a man who had seen and done a lot of things in his lifetime, not all of which were pleasant. She felt an instant connection with him, kind of like a kindred spirit.

“You’re welcome. Can he have a cookie, too?”

Was that a trick of the light, or had the stern-faced commander’s lips twitched? “I think he was hoping you’d ask.”

She laughed softly and offered Fred a cookie. He took it gently, the short whiskers along his muzzle tickling her fingers. “Such good manners,” she praised, then summoned her courage and turned back to her human guest to find him studying her. What exactly did he see when he looked at her, she wondered?

“So, Commander Michaels, you’re going to help us find Chris?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Clearly, the dog wasn’t the only one with good manners. After dealing with Gregory and his ilk for so many years, such civility was a refreshing and most welcome change. She began to relax. Perhaps other things would be different, too.

“Excellent. How can I help?”

She slipped Fred another cookie, then sat back, crossed her legs, and lifted the mug to her lips. For a moment, his eyes followed the movement before rising to meet hers. A small frisson of pleasure ghosted over her. It had been a long time since a man had looked at her legs with such interest.

“Why don’t we start with you, Ms. Miller?”

She smiled, suppressing a shiver at the way his deep, rich voice rolled through her. “All right. What do you want to know?”

He extracted a small notebook and pen from one of his many pants pockets, back to being all business. “You are Christos Kristikos’s personal assistant, is that correct?”

“How long have you worked for him?”

“About ten years, give or take.”

“And you live here at the estate?”

“Yes, I do.”

“Well, it certainly makes for a nice morning commute.” She smiled.

He didn’t return it. His eyes flicked toward the wedding photo. “Does your husband live here, too?”

“No. I’m a widow.”

He wrote that down. “What are your responsibilities?”

“Among other things, I handle Chris’s personal correspondence, make his appointments, and ensure he knows where he’s supposed to be and when.”

The commander stopped writing, his eyes lifting and narrowing. “You call him Chris? Not Mr. Kristikos?” His tone hadn’t changed significantly, but it sounded more like an accusation than a question.

“Would you say you are on familiar terms, then?”

“Yes, we are.”

The corners of his lips turned downward as he lowered his head and went back to scratching in his notebook. “I see,” he said, but she was beginning to think he was not seeing things properly at all. In a matter of minutes, that initial sense of connection she’d felt had degraded, replaced by a deepening sense of unease. Virginia shifted slightly and sipped her coffee, hoping she was wrong.

“Ms. Miller, do you know who your boss was meeting the night he disappeared?”

“No, I don’t.” Scribble.

“Do you know what the meeting was about?”

“No, I’m sorry, I don’t.” Scribble.

“Yet, you are his personal assistant.”

“Yes, I am, but what you must understand is that Chris is a—”

“Yes, a very private man,” he interrupted, his voice sharper than it had been. “I’ve heard. But as his PA, I had hoped you might be able to provide something more useful than that.”

She blinked, considering him for several moments before she spoke again. His green eyes had gone from intense to accusing now, too. She uncrossed her legs and leaned forward slightly.

“Why don’t you ask the real question, Commander?”

“And what is that, Ms. Miller?”

“Am I sleeping with my boss?”

His expression didn’t change. “Are you?”

A wave of disappointment crashed over her. “Not that it’s any of your business, but the answer is no, and I don’t know why you would think otherwise.”

He closed his notebook and put it back into his pocket. “Let’s be honest, Ms. Miller. You don’t exactly fit the standard Kristikos qualifications for employment. Not judging here, but—”

“Aren’t you?” she said quietly. “You come into my office, ask me a few questions, and think you have enough information to form a conclusion like that? You don’t. Not even close. Chris isn’t my lover, Commander. He’s family.”

She could tell by his face that she’d shocked him, but it did little to stem her disappointment. Apparently, she’d misjudged him as much as he’d misjudged her.

“Excuse me, did you say you and Kristikos are related?”

She thought about telling him exactly what he could do with his questions, including where he could shove them, but this was not about her. This was about finding Chris. Preconceived, misogynistic notions or not, Gabriel Michaels was still her best hope of doing so. More importantly, she wanted him to understand. She didn’t want him to view her through the same filter everyone else did.

She took a deep, calming breath and called upon years of practice, shoving her personal feelings into the background. “Chris and I were—are—close, but not in the way you think.”

She set her coffee down and rose to her feet, pacing to release some of the restless energy that came with her irritation. Part of her resented the fact that she felt compelled to explain when she should have just shown him the door.

“Many years ago, my husband and I took his mother out to dinner to celebrate her birthday. On the way home, we were involved in an accident. The roads were icy, and we lost control. Robert was killed instantly.”

“I’m sorry.”

“It was a long time ago.” She paused at the French doors, wrapping her arms around herself. “His mother survived the crash, but lived only a few days. I woke up a week later in a private hospital, with no memory of the accident and months of rehabilitation ahead of me. Eventually, a man came to see me. He told me his name was Christos Kristikos, and that he would be assuming all financial responsibility for my recovery.”

“Why would he do that?” the commander asked suspiciously.

“That’s exactly what I wondered, too. That’s when he told me that my husband, Robert, was his brother.”

“His brother?”

“Yes, Commander, his illegitimate brother.
Zanders, Abbie. SEAL Out of Water (Silver SEALs Book 7). Kindle Locations (1077-1148). Kindle Edition.

Virginia’s connection to the Kristikos family is a bit of a shock to Gabe but it’s not going to be the last surprise either.

So many roadblocks with the staff, a mysterious possible asset among the staff, plenty of twists and turns as this story unfolds. Certainly a most interesting outcome.

I couldn’t put this book down, the story line while in sync with the series is very different.

Tuff Enough
Blackhawk Security Book 1

Samantha A. Cole

While security operative Jason “Tuff” Tanner lives for dangerous assignments, he likes his downtime in his quiet neighborhood too. But that peacefulness is suddenly interrupted when his new next-door neighbor becomes a target for someone hell bent on revenge. Canine rescuer Concetta “Chet” Suarez brings all his protective instincts to the surface, along with feelings he’s never experienced with any other woman. Will he lose her before he ever gets a chance to make her his?

Two things I absolutely love in books are former military and animals. Dogs, cats, horses doesn’t matter, I pretty much love all animals domesticated and wild.

Concetta ‘Chet’ Suarez is an animal control officer who is currently fostering a pit bull ‘Meat’ that was part of a rescue from a dog fighting ring. His trust is limited to just Chet at the moment.

Jason ‘Tuff’ Tanner, is returning from a mission. The last thing he expected as he approached his door, was his very attractive neighbor to open her door and a massive dog come out snarling.

This is a favorite scene as Chet gets the dog under control.

Petting the pit’s massive head, Chet murmured a few times before turning to look at Tuff, apologetically. “I’m so sorry about that. I didn’t know you were out here. Meat’s had a tough life so far, and he’s very wary of men.”

Tuff relaxed a little and snorted. “If that’s wary, I’d hate to see when he gets hostile.”

Still stroking the dog, Chet frowned. “That’s what happens to pit bulls when they’re raised from puppies to be fight dogs.”

“Fight dog? Is he from the raid I heard about last week?” He remembered her telling him she was an animal control officer for Hillsborough County, which included the city of Tampa, and volunteered with rescue groups.

“Yeah. He and fourteen others. They were found caged in a warehouse in deplorable conditions. Two had been so badly injured they had to be euthanized.” She clearly wasn’t happy about that, and Tuff didn’t blame her.

Studying the dog, now that Meat wasn’t trying to kill him, Tuff could see the multiple scars that covered his face and body. His velvet-covered ears had been cropped, and there was a cleft on the side of his upper lip from a tear that’d healed without stitches. Despite the damage, he was a beautiful dog, and Tuff wished he could spend five minutes alone with the bastards who’d used Meat and the other dogs for sport. No animal should be abused in any way, shape, or form.

“Sorry to hear that. So, he’s staying with you?” Renters were allowed pets as long as there weren’t any complaints from the neighbors about them.

“I’m fostering him for now. We bonded at the shelter. Once he was out of quarantine, I decided to bring him home to show him what it was like to be pampered. He’d never seen the inside of a house or had his own soft bed before. I’m hoping to retrain him so he can find a forever home.”

Tuff’s gaze dropped to Meat, who’d finally laid down on the concrete, still panting, then returned to Chet’s face. “That’ll probably take a while.”

Her chin lifted. “I think he’s worth it.”

“I didn’t think he wasn’t.” He scratched his temple. Tuff loved all animals, but dogs especially. He’d had a few while growing up, and there had been some in his Army unit. When they weren’t working, he and his buddies had enjoyed playing fetch with the MWDs, or just sitting there, petting them. “Can I help?”

Chet’s head tilted to the side. “How?”

“You can use me to get him to understand not all men want to harm him. Think if I lay down on the grass, you can let him sniff me? I’ll stay perfectly still. Then you can reward him when he doesn’t sink his teeth into me.”

“Um . .  . yeah, if you don’t mind. I’ll walk him around you, but not too close.”

“Great.” Tuff headed for the middle of the lawn in front of Chet’s side of the house, wondering if he just signed himself up to be the dog’s next meal.
Love Under Siege. Samantha A. Cole. Tuff Enough. Kindle Locations 92-115. Kindle Edition.

These two have an immediate attraction, but neither of them really want to get involved since they’re neighbors. Meat is a definite player in this one as he brings these two together.

All is not fun and games as Chet’s boss and his wife are killed in a drive-by and dogs from the raid are taken from the homes fostering them.

Things heat up in more ways than one, as they realize Chet is a possible target of these gang members.

I loved meeting Tuff’s team and some of the guys from Trident. Looks like I have another series to read.

Plenty of action, suspense and heat and I can’t wait for the next book in this series, it’s nice to start a series at the beginning.

Never Forget
Never Forget Series Book 1

Kalyn Cooper

Dreams or nightmares. Truth or lies. He can’t tell them apart after he sees the woman in his dreams. She is the key to his past, present, and future… She just buried her husband next to her fiancé who was killed in an explosion while they were on a mission together ten years ago. She doesn’t need another man in her life, until someone tries to kill her.

Once again Kalyn has me biting my nails. Now I know the CIA does scary stuff, but man this is really terrifying.

Elizabeth lost her husband of less than a day ten years ago in an explosion overseas. Now she is burying her second one, a victim of an auto accident.

Matthew is Gabe’s second in command, he’s been having dreams of a silvery-eyed woman and a lot of circumstances that seem real but couldn’t be, could they?

He meets the woman haunting his dreams at her husband funeral. More than that he seems to recognize her former teammates, but still not really.

Her vision was blurred by tears when she looked at Gabriel. “I can’t thank—” She couldn’t finish the sentence. The man who arrived with Gabe now stood three feet behind him in the same spot her son had occupied for the past half hour. He’d taken off his aviator sunglasses and was wiping them with a lens cloth.

He looked up and met her gaze.

Elizabeth couldn’t breathe. Her lungs refused to work.

She blinked, and blinked, trying to sweep away the water so she could focus. She removed her sunglasses and dabbed her eyes, then looked straight into his.

His whole body jolted as though they had been connected by a live wire.

No. It couldn’t be.

Her gaze tracked to the gravestone. Mason A. Sinclair. She stared at the final date as if she needed confirmation of his death.

Slowly, she dared to look at the white-haired man with the face of an angel.

The edges of her vision narrowed until all she saw was his light brown eyes and the golden circle around the iris.

The world went black.

In her mind, she was falling into her own grave, meeting Mason in the next world, as every muscle in her body gave up.
Love Under Siege. KaLyn Cooper. Never Forget. (Kindle Locations 637-647). Kindle Edition.

As Matt insinuates himself into her life, he learns more things that worry him. Protecting her and her children is foremost on this list.

I hope this is the beginning of another series or at least becomes part of the existing ones. I loved the mention of the Black Swans and Uncle Tom Callahan.

This is an intense, romantic, scary, and emotional book. I loved every minute of it.

Ravished River
Men of Mercy

Lindsay Cross

Special Forces Operative Aaron Spears dealt with relationships like he dealt with battle – something to be avoided if at all possible, until Celine Latimer walked into his life and turned his world upside down.

Aaron recommended Celine as the stylist for Caroline Cotter’s wedding, the Senator’s daughter was marrying General Rainer in a typical DC affair. A wedding that never took place as Caroline and Celine were kidnapped.

Filled with guilt Aaron can’t get Celine out of his mind something that hasn’t happened to him before. The man behind it all is a traitor, former CIA known as Mr. J. The goal now is to find the women and kill Mr. J.

They manage to intercept a transaction, but only Celine was in the vehicles.

This is a favorite scene when Celine wakes in the hospital.

Celine was literally falling apart right before his eyes and he didn’t have a damn clue what to do to stop it. She’d gone completely white when she looked under the sheet. Was he supposed to hold her? Or would having a man touch her make her worse? Did he need to call the Sister back in here?

She shuddered and silent tears flowed from her closed eyes. Fuck, his chest felt like someone had stuck a blade in it and left it there to rust. He’d never felt so helpless. What was going through her mind? If only he could ask her without invoking more nightmares.

She moaned and bent forward, the first sob breaking free and suddenly he knew what he had to do. His arms went around her, as natural as if they’d been molded for her, and he held her against his chest. Bleeding and sobbing with only a stained sheet between them, he held her.

He’d never let her go.

Her knees gave out, Aaron scooped her fluidly, sensing when she no longer had the strength to stand on her own. He didn’t care about anything or anyone else right now except the woman in his arms.

He knew girls needed to cry sometimes, he’d learned that lesson from his sisters. Sometimes they cried for no reason whatsoever than a need to cleanse. Celine cried for a reason more real than she could handle on her own.
Her sobs filled the room, each one ripping a little piece from his heart.

He’d handle whatever she’d been through and he’d be here for her; hold her up so she wouldn’t fall to her demons.

He had no clue about recovering from rape or captivity, but he’d do his damn best to do what he could for her and right now he did what felt right. He held her.

Sister Mary Catherine eased open the door, saw them together and slowly closed it.

Celine clutched his shirt, holding on to him like a life line. He embraced the fierce surge of protectiveness and eased onto the bed, settling her in his lap. Eventually, her sobs turned to soft sniffles and then to even softer pants as she strove for control.

He remained silent, letting her figure her own way through. When she was ready, he’d be here.
Love Under Siege. Lindsay Cross. Ravished River. Men of Mercy Book 8. Kindle Locations 3915-3930. Kindle Edition.

With Celine rescued and brought back to the US they find Mr. J’s reach is deeper than they originally thought, and Aaron has to go off the grid with Celine.

Lots of suspense as Aaron comes to terms with his feelings for Celine and the fact his team has yet to locate Caroline.

Fast paced, sexy and sizzling.

I can’t wait to read the Men of Mercy Series.

The Bounty Hunters

PJ Fiala

Lincoln Winter is hired to bring in a criminal who is selling arms on the black market and he never misses a mark. That is until the sultry Skye Sommers crosses his path and unwittingly gets herself caught up in much more than she can handle. Can they stay alive long enough to find a killer, an arms dealer and love?

When bounty hunter Lincoln Winter enlists the aid of HR person Skye Sommers to apprehend a runner, he doesn’t expect the attraction. He also doesn’t expect to open the can of worms he does. He does however look forward to getting to know the beautiful Skye better.

As Skye is reprimanded for turning the employee over to the police, she realizes something is off with her boss. After checking for other employees she hasn’t hired at this location, she is surprised to find others and decides to do some more checking from home.

Lincoln finds her stuck on the road, her car overheating and finagles a dinner invitation when he offers help with her other chores.

This is a favorite scene when he meets her parents.

She smiled at him, and the smile he returned took her breath away. She’d never seen such beauty in a man. While impressively large and strong, his features were mesmerizing. She’d never seen such beautiful gray eyes, and those dark lashes framing them were envious.

“Hi, sweetheart, I made spaghetti tonight. It’s just about ready to …” Her mother turned with a bowl of steaming hot pasta in her hands and froze when her eyes landed on Lincoln.

“Well, hello,” her mother said, if not a bit breathless, then certainly with some awe in her voice.

Lincoln chuckled behind her, no doubt used to this reaction from women. She stepped aside and held her hand toward her mother. “Mom, this is Lincoln Winter. Lincoln, my mom, Melissa.”

She watched as the bowl of pasta was deposited on the table and her mom swiped her hands on the towel tucked into her jeans as an apron. She met Lincoln in the middle of the room and they shook hands.

“It’s nice to meet you, Melissa.”

Did her mother just sigh? Shit. She did. She didn’t want her mom—or dad, for that matter—getting attached to Lincoln. This was nothing more than showing him what a mess her life was so he’d go on his merry way. Victor and Mangus didn’t want her helping him, and she didn’t need the complication. She needed the job right now and couldn’t risk losing it over a man. Not again.

“Oh … it’s nice meeting you, Lincoln.” Yep, she was sighing.

“Momma, where’s Daddy?” She needed to get this show moving.

Her mother’s lips thinned and her posture straightened. “He’s had a very bad day today, and he’s in his chair in the living room. I tried helping him up, but I couldn’t do it myself. I was waiting for you to help me.”

Nodding, she stepped toward the living room, Lincoln and her mother on her heels. “Hi, Daddy.”

Her father sat in his burgundy recliner, purchased just after his accident with the lumbar supports he needed during his healing time. Little did any of them know how well it would be used just one year later. He looked up at her, his formerly tall, straight shoulders now slouched from pain and sadness. He hated being so helpless. It gnawed at her gut to see him so defeated.

“Hi, sweetheart. Hope you had a good day today.” His voice, which had once been so strong and deep, now sounded hollow and detached.

“It was good, Daddy. I’d like to introduce you to Lincoln Winter.” She turned to Lincoln. “My dad, Jeff.”

Lincoln leaned forward with his hand out and took Jeff’s hand in his. They shook hands, and she watched her father’s face light up just a bit as they engaged in some silent man speak. “I understand today was a bad day and you need some help. Allow me to be of assistance.”

Lincoln took charge and leaned down in front of her father, wrapped his arms around her father’s hips and slowly pulled him to the front edge of the recliner. Once he had him in place, he said to her dad, “Fast or slow?”

She shot a quick glance at her mother whose brows now furrowed as she watched Lincoln make quick work of a task they would have taken fifteen minutes to complete.

Bending his knees before her father, she watched as her dad’s arms wrapped around Lincoln’s shoulders and in just a few seconds, Lincoln stood with her father in front of him. Giving her father a moment to get his bearings, he waited until he nodded and removed his arms.

Her father’s hands gripped the walker her mother set in front of him, and she saw him smile just a bit.

“If you ladies want to head on in to the kitchen, I’ll make sure Jeff gets in okay.”

They both hesitated until Lincoln nodded at her, then he winked again. Didn’t that just wing through her body and straight to places that should be left out of this whole scenario?

She nodded to her mother who walked ahead of her to the kitchen. Behind her, she heard her father saying, “I love them, but they hover too much.”

“That’s what women do,” Lincoln responded. She fought the urge to turn and look at him. Then she heard, “But they’re gorgeous, and that’s a plus.”

Her father chuckled and she ducked around the corner of the kitchen, her cheeks flaming red and her breathing a bit choppy. Lincoln thought she was gorgeous.
Love Under Siege. PJ Fiala. Lincoln. Kindle Locations 5323-5357. Kindle Edition.

Things heat up quickly in more ways than one as more suspicions fall on the Santorino brothers, Skye’s employers.

Fast paced, suspenseful with plenty of action keep you on your toes as Skye and Lincoln’s relationship starts to sizzle.

I’m not sure who I love more Lincoln or his gorgeous German Shepherd Abe. The other men in his company have me wanting to know them better and I was happy to see Ford has his own book. I’ll definitely be watching for more of this Series.

Lighthouse Security Investigation

Maryann Jordan

Mace Hanna’s security business keeps him busy…too busy for a relationship. When providing security for a single mom and her young son who has witnessed a murder, he vows to keep them safe…and finds love along the way.

Once again a ‘can’t put it down’ book from Maryann. I was enthralled from the very first page. Mace’s grandfather, the house, the lighthouse, the history, I felt like I was there.

Then his company Lighthouse Security Investigations, I loved the way he found this latest case. It was intriguing the way he put the pieces together and found Sylvie and her son.

This is a favorite scene as he meets with Sylvie after her son David witnessed the murder.

Sylvie watched her son before turning around, observing as Mason settled into the chair.

“I’m going to be completely honest with you, Ms. Gardner,” he said. “I am a private investigator, but I also do a lot of individual security work. I monitor police reports at times, to see if I can be of service. The police report that was filed last Thursday caught my eye.”

Cocking her head to the side, she asked, “Did you recognize me from our little…um…encounter that morning?”

“No, no…not at first. Then, I saw your driver’s license and realized who you were.”

She nodded, uncertain what to say, but curiosity filling her.

“I felt a desire to look into the reports that you had filed with the police here.”

“What is it that you’re looking for?”

“After seeing the third report that you filed, where you reported someone had been in your house, I wanted to offer you any security advice that I can.” Doubts still lingered in her eyes, so Mason continued, “For example, I see that you have no deadbolt on your front door and I assume the back door is the same. I also notice that you do not have any outdoor security lights. And, while Mr. Curtis is certainly the kind of neighbor who would call the police if he thought something was happening, I would hate for you to only have him to rely on.”

“Mr. Hanover, everything you say is right, but I’ve talked to the police. I don’t know what else I can do,” she said, dropping her eyes, wiping her palms on her jeans. “I bought a deadbolt lock, but after I got home, I realized I need a special drill bit to make a large hole in the door to install it.” Her voice lower, she admitted, “I can’t afford any fancy security.”

“Ms. Gardner, do you believe that your son witnessed a crime?”

Her head jerked up, her clear eyes meeting his, and she declared, “Absolutely. He may be young, but he doesn’t lie. And while he certainly has a child’s normal imagination, the level of detail was too descriptive for him to be incorrect in what he saw.” She glanced over her shoulder, presumably listening for the sound of the television, before she looked toward him again. “I’m the one that had to hold him that night because he was shaking in fright.”

“I believe him,” he said, noting her jerk in surprise at his words. “I know the police were doubtful, but I believe your son’s story. What concerns me, is that you had somebody checking out this house, following you, and then you reported that someone had been inside. That indicates to me that what your son saw was absolutely real.”

Sylvie’s breath left her lungs in a rush, and she whispered, “Thank you.” Closing her eyes, for just a moment, she reveled in how good it felt to have someone believe them. Focusing on him again, she said, “But, I don’t know what to do about any of this.”

“When I was checking the police reports, I didn’t see a witness drawing. Did they ask him for specific details?”

Nodding, she said, “Yes. David gave a description of what the men looked like and were wearing, but…” As her voice trailed off, it struck her that the police had not asked for more details.

“I’d like to talk to David if you don’t mind,” Mason said, carefully watching the concern and doubt etched into the lines of her forehead. The idea that he would like to erase those lines by smoothing his fingers over her skin struck him, but he battled the idea back as soon as it hit. He expected her immediate refusal, but to his surprise, she nodded.

“I could—”

“Please, come in,” she said, standing quickly. Pushing her chair back, she reached forward and flipped the simple latch on the screen door. Seeing his surprise, she said, “I trust you. I want you to talk to David…as long as you don’t scare him more than he’s already been scared.”

When they discover the body and who exactly was killed more security is needed. Mace sets them up in his grandfather’s house, that is now his.

Things heat up very quickly in the case and Mace finds his attraction to Sylvie something he can’t ignore.

I absolutely loved the slow build of this relationship which includes David.

Plenty of twists and turns, romance and some fun as well.

I look forward to the next book in this new series.

Black Jack
Mystic Nights Book 4

MJ Nightingale

Undercover FBI agent, Jackson Black doesn’t expect to find love while working deep undercover on a RICO case. But he can’t resist Dawn, the sexy accountant, who keeps crossing his path during the investigation putting both of their lives on the line.

When Jackson meets Dawn she is filling in for a dealer at her family’s casino. He is quite taken with the dark haired beauty and things heat up very quickly.

What they both assume will be a one night stand, is fiery hot and sensuous. Realizing the pull Jackson tries to stay away from Dawn but finds it extremely difficult since she’s almost always at the casino.

This is a favorite scene as they leave for a real date.

“Hi, Dawn.” He stooped down and pressed a light kiss to her cheek. “You look nice today. I rented a car, hoping we could take a ride, talk, and have lunch somewhere other than the casino.”

“That sounds nice.” Good, she thought. He was thinking along the same lines as she.

“Why did you rent a car?” she asked as he took her elbow and led her from the lobby. “Are you not from Connecticut?” There she did it. Asked her first question.

“Actually, I am. I live in Hartford.” Just forty-five minutes away, Dawn thought, pleased. “But my cousin borrowed it. She lives in the city, too, and doesn’t have one. Her son had a birthday party to go to, and it was being held out of town, so she needed to use it while I was away last week. I didn’t think I’d need it today, so. . .” His voice trailed off. He had a cousin and second cousin in the capital.

“Oh, okay. So, you have family? You haven’t mentioned them before.”

He sighed as he weaved her through the crowded lobby. “I know. And I’m sorry about that.” They stepped into the crisp sunshine. “Alyssa is my only relative. Our parents were killed in a car crash when we were in college. We were both at UConn. I was a senior, and she was a freshman. She’s like a little sister to me, and her son is more like a nephew. He calls me Uncle Jack.”

Jack felt good telling Dawn about himself. He would tell her as much as he could without blowing his cover. He liked her. A lot. Wanted this to work. He just had to make sure she was safe. Last night when he spotted her in the elevator while he’d been working had been a close call. He’d been relieved when she hadn’t confronted him; at the same time, it bothered him. He’d decided then and there that he’d tell her as much as he could. He didn’t want what they could have together to be based on a lie. And he didn’t want any more close calls like the one last night. Her confronting him could have ruined everything.

The moment they walked out into the brisk air, he mentioned it. “I had a lousy evening last night. I wished I had been spending it with you, and seeing you in that elevator tucked away in the corner really bothered me.”

“You saw me?” she gasped. She looked into his eyes and saw him clearly struggling with something.

He nodded, but instead of explaining further he indicated a vehicle up ahead. “That’s mine. I rented the grey Ranger.”

“Why didn’t you say anything?” She was confused.

“Why didn’t you?” he asked, wanting to know her answer. She stopped before the passenger door of the Jeep. He held the handle but didn’t open it for her just yet. He wanted that answer.

She turned to him. “Last week, I ran scared. It was cowardly of me. I’ve been hurt before by guys I fell for. And I realized that night how much I could care for you, yet I knew so little about you. Seeing you with those women and that man bothered me. I didn’t know why, but I didn’t want to jump to any conclusions. I figured I’d ask you about it today.”

“Fair enough, and it’s kind of what I was figuring.” He lifted his hand to take a lock of hair that blew in her face and softly tucked it behind her ear. “I’m feeling it, too. And I know I haven’t revealed much about myself, but I’m hoping this date will do that.”

“I hope so,” she whispered softly, staring up into his grey eyes, eyes she could lose herself in. Yet, she was still scared of what this mysterious man might tell her.

“I do, too, kitten.” Jack smiled broadly upon this gorgeous woman. Her tentative smile gave him hope that he’d finally found a woman he could cherish forever. He, too, had a life of hurt. After losing his parents, he didn’t think he could love someone the way they had loved each other. It would hurt too much to lose someone you loved that way, but she was worth the risk. Deep down he knew it. However, he still hadn’t figured out how he could explain what he did for a living. He had been up half the night thinking about how he’d tell her.

He opened the door to the rented Jeep and watched as she got in. He helped her to buckle up, and she took the kiss he gave her.

Running to his side of the car, Jack climbed in. Though he was still not sure what he would say, he was more hopeful than he’d been in a long time.

Unfortunately this whole dating thing gets Dawn noticed by the guys Jack is setting up. When they are escorted to the ‘boss’ it’s Dawn that comes up with the perfect plan to catch them all.

Plenty of heat in more ways than one. I now have to go back and read the rest of this series. I want to know all of these wonderful characters.

Her Guarded Hero
Black Dawn Book 5

Caitlyn O’Leary

It’s been five years since his tragic loss and Navy SEAL, Dalton Sullivan heads to Lake Tahoe to be alone. The last thing he expects is horse trainer, Aurora Chance to literally fall at his feet. As danger and raw emotion churn around them, can Dalton be brought back into the light?

I love this series and Dalton is just one more team member to love. He has his demons and he’s come to Lake Tahoe to exercise them.

Aurora is a very strong woman who is an accomplished horsewomen. In addition to her family’s business of breeding, she works with abused horses to hopefully get them to the point they can be adopted.

This book starts out with a bang, literally as someone takes pot shots at Aurora and her horse. Fortunately Dalton is nearby and is able to give her a hand. As he gets her to the road where there will hopefully be a cell signal, she keeps him entertained with tales of her Grandparents. She also argues that the shots were random, from poachers and she was not the target.

With Sheriff Brody dismissing the shooting as poachers, Dalton makes a decision to help.

This is a favorite scene.

Dalton cleared his throat. “I think I might have an idea. At least for a little bit.”

Gunnar’s head swung to spear the younger man with a laser gaze.

“What? Do you know a way we can get Brody off his ass to do something? Dammit, he’s our friend, Aurora. He’s known you since you were in diapers.”

She covered her grandfather’s fist. “He’ll come around.”

“Let’s hope it’s before another attempt is made on your life,” he huffed. He looked back over at Dalton. “What’s your idea, Son?”

“I’m vacationing here for a week. How about I bunk with your two hands? That will allow me to keep an eye on things. Maybe take a look around and find out something.”

She thought her grandfather might kiss Petty Officer First Class Sullivan.

“We have cabins a half mile away from the barn, it gives the men privacy,” Gunnar explained, but then he hesitated. “I’d feel a lot better if you would stay closer to my granddaughter. We have two extra rooms here in the house. We can set you up in one of those. There’s a good size TV in one of them.”

“Weren’t you here to hike and explore the area?” Aurora asked. She didn’t need a babysitter, no matter how handsome he was.

“I was. But I like the looks of your ranch, and it’s been a while since I’ve been riding, so I’d enjoy this even more.” Sure, he would.

The man was just being a good sport.

“Look Dalton, we couldn’t impose on you like this,” Aurora protested.

“It’s not an imposition,” Gunnar said. “You heard the man. He wants to get back in the saddle.”

“Your grandfather is right.” Dalton said with a smile. “One of my former teammates has a big spread in Texas. That’s where I learned to ride. I would really love to be able to show up next time as a better horseman.”

“Well Aurora can definitely help you with that. She’s an expert, she not only trains and works with abused animals, she’s a pro at giving riding lessons.”

Dalton’s eyes lit up with amusement, while Aurora turned damn near purple.
Love Under Siege. Caitlyn O’Leary. Her Guarded Hero. Kindle Locations 14934-14951). Kindle Edition.

Plenty of heat between Dalton and Aurora that escalates rapidly even though both claim to want nothing more than temporary fun.

There’s definitely a bit of a communication break down, between Aurora and those trying to protect her as they try to track down the shooters.

I love the horses, Dalton’s teammates Aurora dubbed ‘the Scooby Team, and her friends Lindy and Crystal. Strong women are always what these men need.

Plenty of twists, turns and heat, plus a couple of surprises I didn’t see coming. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

Not Quite Broken
Callaghan Family and Friends

Abbie Zanders

Former POW Brian McCain is so busy fighting his demons, there’s not enough left over for anyone else – not even the one woman who has a way of shining light into his darkness. But when a serial killer turns his sights on her, Brian realizes he’s not quite as broken as he thinks he is.

I fell in love with Brian at the very beginning of this book.

Tori is attending Phoebe’s bridal shower and her ‘boyfriend’ Cole doesn’t pick her up as arranged. With the latest news reporting another missing woman, she’s about to call for an Uber, when Brian offers to drive her home.

This is a favorite scene as they leave the bar.

Tori ignored the tiny flutter that tried to take up residence behind her rib cage. Brian McCain was just being nice. His offer to give her a ride didn’t mean anything.

The serial nutcase who had been terrorizing the region had everyone on edge. Women were looking over their shoulders and men—particularly the protective types—were stepping up their game.

She wasn’t complaining. People could call her old-fashioned, but she liked knowing that someone cared enough to make the effort, and having big, strong men keeping watchful eyes made her feel safer.

Unfortunately, the guy she was seeing (emphasis on was) didn’t seem to care nearly as much. Granted, their relationship was still fairly new. They’d only gone out a few times, so maybe she was expecting too much.

You’ve never gone out with Brian McCain and he’s stepping up, her inner voice whispered.

Yes, well, not all men are created equal. Some are more chivalrous than others.

It wasn’t even as if she had asked Cole to be her designated driver. He had been the one to offer when they’d been in the BodyWorks lobby with a group of others discussing the bachelorette party.

Yes, but that was only after Kieran put him on the spot and gave him the stink eye.

Still, he could have said no. She wouldn’t have taken it too personally. She certainly would have preferred that to getting stood up.

It would have made him look bad, though, and Cole is all about looking good.

True enough.

“All done. Ready to go?” She nodded, silencing her internal conversation and gathering her phone and purse. Brian held the door open for her and she walked through, offering a quiet thank you to let him know she appreciated the courtesy.

They went into the back lot, where Brian pointed to a Jeep Wrangler. Judging by the mud splattered along the front and sides, he liked off-roading, too.

“Hope this is okay,” he said almost apologetically as he opened the door for her there, too.

“Perfect.” She used the running board and the suspended hand grip to lift herself into the passenger seat. “I’ve got one myself.”

His eyebrows shot up. “Yeah?”

“You seem surprised.”

“Not a lot of women drive Jeeps.”

The response tumbled out before she could stop it. “I’m not a lot of women.”
Love Under Siege. Abbie Zanders. Not Quite Broken. Kindle Locations 12514-12534. Kindle Edition.

I love Tori’s internal conversations and her inner evaluations of every situation.

These two have a lot in common and begin doing stuff together as friends. Lots of fun stuff. Unfortunately Brian doesn’t believe he deserves someone as wonderful as Tori as anything more than a friend.

Just as things really heat up between them Brian backs off. It hurts and Tori misses the things they did together.

An emotional tale, with lots of fun, laughter, tears and a twist that will have you turning the pages for more.

Maryann Jordan’s Bio and Links

I have always been an avid reader. I joke that I “cut my romance teeth” on the old historical romance books. I’ve written as a hobby for over 30 years. In 2014, I finally gave in to the characters in my head pleading for their story to be told. Thus, Emma’s Home was created.

My books are filled with sweet romance and hot sex; mystery, suspense, real life characters and situations. My heroes are alphas, take charge men who love the strong, independent women they fall in love with.

I worked as a counselor in a high school and have been involved in education for the past 30 years. I recently retired and now can spend more time devoted to my writing.

I have been married to a wonderfully patient man for 35 years and have 2 adult, very supportive daughters.

When writing, my dog or one of my cats will usually be found in my lap!

I love to hear from readers.
