Christmas 2015 Blog blurb

LOVE IS THE GREATEST RISK OF ALL

After multiple tours of duty, Brandon Forte returns to his hometown on a personal mission: to open a facility for military service dogs like Haydn, a German shepherd who’s seen his share of combat and loss. It also brings him back to Sophie Kim, a beacon of light in his life . . . and the one woman he can’t have. But Forte’s success means he’s made enemies in high places. Enemies who are now after Sophie . . .

When Forte enlisted and left without saying goodbye, Sophie did her best to move on. But with her first love back in town, looking sexier than ever, she’s constantly reminded of what they could have had. Then after he risks himself for her, Sophie realizes she’ll have to put her life in the hands of the man who broke her heart, knowing the danger -and the sparks between them- could consume them both.

Christmas 2015 Blog Review

This one starts off with a bang, literally. As Brandon has Haydn (one of their new dogs) out to work with his new prosthetic, he runs into Sophie long time friend and accountant for Hopes Crossing. They walk her to her car and while she is putting her packages the trunk, Haydn gets Brandon’s attention. This gives him just enough time to get them to relative safety before the explosion. Haydn stays with Sophie while Brandon calls for help and secures the area. The question is who put a bomb on her car and why. This is the excerpt given for this Tour, but it’s one of my favorite scenes so I’m putting it here.

Between one moment and the next, he was right there next to her, kneeling so they were face to face. She let out the air in her lungs in a rush, not sure of what she wanted to do or what he was planning to do. She parted her lips but didn’t say anything, didn’t want to put another question out there for him to address before he answered the one she really wanted to know.

Because she was hoping he was here for her—not his childhood friend—but for the very adult version of her who’d been waiting for him all this time.

Faster than she could react, his lips caught hers. The contact rushed through her in a lightning shot of surprise. Years of bottled-up frustration bubbled up and she leaned into him with a soft gasp.

And then he pulled back and she was left trying to catch her breath.

Slowly, carefully, he slid his arms around her back and under her knees. He cradled her against his chest and tucked her head under his chin. Circled as she was in his embrace, he held her close. He pressed his lips against her hair.

“That was too close yesterday, Sophie.” His voice was low, gruff, and almost cracked with emotion. “The thought of losing you just about killed me.”

From this point it’s not only about them beginning a new relationship but also keeping Sophie safe. I loved the visit to the Cat Café and that Sophie adopts one of the cats. Haydn’s reaction to the little fluff of fur was interesting to observe. But Haydn’s role is for the most part helping keep Sophie out of harms way. Sophie’s name for the cat had me giggling as I tried to follow her logic for Tessaract. I absolutely love these animals and how they interact with Brandon and Sophie.

Now Sophie and Brandon is something else entirely. Slow and easy but not. Lots of conflicting emotions and other things that need to be resolved.

Fast paced with lots of action in and out of the bedroom. I really can’t wait for more of these books!

Release Blitz, Giveaway, Review and Guest Post! Space Cowboy Survival Guide – A Space Opera by Heather Long

Escape for the space adventure of your life and learn the rules along the way…

spacecowboy_blitzbadge

Join me in welcoming Heather Long to Carol Kittie Reviews. Heather has graciously answered this burning question for us,
What was your inspiration for Space Cowboy?

The short answer is my husband. Funnily enough, the long answer is my husband as well.

It began on a driving trip to Disney World, I kid you not about three—maybe four years ago. I was working on a Fevered Hearts book that trip and he said, “You know what would be cool. A real space cowboy—you know you could do future Fevered Hearts.”

I rolled my eyes and kept on working.

A few weeks later, he brought it up again. “Space cowboy, kind of like Firefly but not. You know, do it your way. He could have great adventures and there would be this like interstellar operator that he talks to but never meets.”

Yeah, I told him to take a walk—did he not see how many deadlines I had?

Christmastime rolls around, and I get a card, “You could always get me a Space Cowboy for Christmas.”

For the love of pete and money, I was ready to strangle him. I had a dozen different books in the queue to write. I did NOT have time for a new series. He kept bringing it up and he knew exactly what he was doing. He wanted to trigger my imagination. If he planted enough seeds and kept fertilizing it, they would grow.

I told him no.

Then he started in on my fans, and made the suggestion there and they got all excited. Many of them piled right on saying they’d love to see it, too.

Yeah, he wasn’t letting it go and as it turns out, what he did worked because I had an idea and the next time he brought it up, I said he had to have rules. Then we were talking about his rules and the people he would meet and when it would happen and well…all I can say is that he got his wish.

This Christmas, he’s getting a Space Cowboy Survival Guide for Christmas.

Thank you so much Heather, I hope your Husband loves his gift as much as I did.

Rule #42
Don’t be a hero.
Heroes do shit for free and get themselves killed.

It’s a lose-lose proposition.

From his leather Stetson to his long coat and choice of weapons, Shaw Sullivan is just a space cowboy who lives by his own code. A loner by choice, he accepted the contract to conduct a stellar census under duress…it was the only way to save his family’s ranch.

Sullivan has four years to complete the mission, and he has zero intentions of letting anything get in his way least of all a desperate woman who wants to hire him to be a hero.

Warning:
This novel is not a romance. It’s a wild, space romp with some rough and tumble characters who aren’t all that likable most days.

Winter Blog Review

I received an ARC of this book from the author so it could be reviewed prior to release day.

Heather Long has done it again, this time with no sex, no romance just exceptional story telling.

Welcome to the future where Earth has colonies over several galaxies. As such they need a census of the inhabited planets and Shaw needing a way to save his family’s ranch in New Texas is just the person to do it. He does have contingency plans in case of his demise so no matter what his family won’t lose the ranch.

All was going right on schedule, traveling through space with only the computer ‘Zed’ for company which suited him just fine. His only other contact he has while on aboard the Gilly is the Earth Prime representative he reports to Jo Rayder. Jo also sends him books and videos to occupy his time while traveling between planets.

Then he reaches New Genesis, there he encounters Tika Anderson, a young beauty from New Athens with a bounty on her head, seeking passage on his ship. Even after hearing her tale he refuses her and continues with his mission, collecting data about the planet.

On his way back to his ship he is attacked by five men, this is a favorite scene.

Fighting for his breath, he pivoted fists raised to see the last assailant—the one who’d been strangling him—down and twitching as Miss Anderson struck him repeatedly with a cattle prod.

Huh.

“Are you all right?” The too wide eyes promised him she wasn’t entirely comfortable with her participation. Shaw forgave her. Limping, he retrieved his pistol, the bent down to flip over one of his attackers.

He didn’t look remotely familiar. Patting him down, he pulled out an ID card. “Get his ID card,” he told Anderson, limping his way around until he’d collected the others.

By the time he joined her, she’d slid her cattle prod down into a slim handle and tucked it into her sleeve.

“Handy,” he commented, then checked the card she handed him. Squinting through his rapidly swelling eyes, he grunted. “Friends of yours?”

“Yes,” she admitted. “Though I think friends would be an extreme definition. That one over there is a bounty hunter named Johan Helios. I’ve seen him on New Athens.”

“Great.” He paused to give Johan Helios a good swift kick in the head, then tucked the ID cards into his duster. He’d turn them all into the local authorities. He touched a hand to his split and bleeding lip. Great. Hungry, tired, and now bleeding. He’d have to clean up before he could eat.

His left knee, one he’d dislocated in a riding accident in his teens, complained viciously, but he kept limping toward the port and the Gilly’s berthing. After a handful of steps, he didn’t hear Miss Anderson following him. Glancing back, he sighed. She was still staring at the downed men. Bounty hunters who apparently came after him because his little would-be passenger had probably either been following him or had been waiting to accost him at the port.

Guilt nibbled at his conscience, but he shoved it aside. He didn’t do guilt. She’d done him a solid when she’d taken out the one strangling him. So…he spat out the blood in his mouth before asking, “Are you coming?”

“I thought you said…” Disbelief filled her voice.

Turning, he continued his limping path. “Not asking you twice, princess.”

Two steps later, she hurried to join him. Great. She’d taken him up on the offer.

“I’ll take you as far as my next port. Clear?”

“Crystal, Captain. Thank you. You’re my…”

He lifted a finger. “Don’t say it. I don’t do that hero shit.”

“Of course, Captain. My lips are sealed.”

Yeah, he was already regretting it.
Heather Long. Space Cowboy Survival Guide (Kindle Locations 510-531). Kindle Edition.

This was the start of not only an uneasy friendship but also some unorthodox acquisitions of crew members as they travel across the universe. That plus more folks attempting to label him a hero, a label he really doesn’t want.

A delightful and suspenseful tale infused with action and wit. One everyone will enjoy!

Bear shifters exist.

Professor Bria Lane has known this since she was a child. Now she’s returned to the forests of Deep Creek to prove it to the world. She has no idea how close she is to that proof in ruggedly sexy park ranger Derek Poole. Intimately close. But uncovering Derek’s wild side comes with a shattering price.

Like a magnet meeting metal, Derek is drawn to Bria. His destiny. His mate. So beautiful and so vulnerable. So dangerous, too: an encroachment of lions, vengeful and vicious, is closing in and they’re ready for war. Now is not the time to be distracted like a lovesick cub.

If Bria reveals the truth of the Deep Creek shifters to the world, she’ll bring out the worst of both sides. But Derek can’t hide his secrets from the love of his life forever. He knows they’re playing with fire–and that when passion runs this hot, this reckless, someone’s bound to get burned.

Lions, Bears and Wolves, Oh my!

The shifter world around Deep Creek is complex. Their world is about to be shaken up by war. The Lions want the Cave of Whispers back in their possession. At one time it was shared by the wolves, lions and bears. Now it is a point of contention.

Dr. Bria Lane believes in shifters, she saw them as a child or she thinks she did. She has returned to where she believes she saw the bear shifters determined to prove her theory. Although her grant says she is studying hydration post hibernation. She hopes to get some DNA that will prove the difference and possible help with human diseases.

When Derek Poole comes upon her camping alone in an unauthorized place in the park, he warns her of the dangers in the area, especially the lions. However he discovers something else as well, the lovely ursinologist is his mate.

Unfortunately, the heirs to the lion pride, Marco and Mason overhear their conversation and plan for her demise. They can’t let anyone leak the secret of shifters. Along with their Father Max they are also planning to take back the Cave of Whispers. This is the war that has been a long time coming and they intend to win. Even by bribing the wolf shifters to help them gain information from the Bears about the cave and it’s contents.

Bria has a problem with lies, and the shifter secret is the biggest lie of omission that Derek could make. He has no choice, but he has to protect and woo his mate. Hopefully she will stay and not say anything about the shifters and accept him as he is.

One of my favorite things about this series is the way the romance builds between the mated pairs. Of course the sex is off the charts hot, but the story around it is just as enthralling.

A favorite scene is when Derek and Bria meet and is in the excerpt below. Be sure to read it.

“What’s an ursus…umm…whatever you said? I’ve always worked with my hands—I never was a college guy. Didn’t have the patience to sit still in the classroom.” Derek kicked at the ground then looked up.“No worries.” She snapped her attention back to what he was saying. “Most people don’t know what an ursinologist is—it’s someone who studies bears.”

“Bears, huh?” He shook his head and laughed. “You study bears?”

“What’s so funny?” She crossed her arms. “It’s a valid profession. And I’m doing what I love.”

“Nothing wrong with it, Bria.” He stepped so close to her she had to look up to meet his gaze, and held his hands up in mock surrender. “I think it’s a fine profession, I’ve just never heard of it. It’s a totally new job that I’ve never heard of. Yet here you are in the woods with me, so I guess we aren’t that far apart, career-wise.”

Derek was in her space and even though they weren’t touching, she felt his presence touching hers, like a low-level energy buzzing in the evening air, crackling when hers met his. One step closer and she could pull that hair band out and hop into his arms, straddling him as she kissed him. She shook her head to clear her naughty thoughts. Ugh. Stop. The thoughts about what she’d like to do to the hot park ranger needed to stop. Maybe she’d been out in the sun too long. Normally she didn’t ogle guys. In fact, she couldn’t remember the last time she had. She cleared her throat and took a step back. “I thought you were laughing at me.”

“No. I didn’t know there was a name for someone who studies bears. Plus, the word sounds kinda funny.” He scanned the forest, thumbs in his belt loops. “I guess you’re in the right place to look for bears, though. Especially this deep in the forest. Lots of them live in Deep Creek. They’re everywhere. Probably closer than you think.”

“I hope so.” Her shoulders lowered and she blew out a breath. “Have you seen any this season? I know they are more active in summer. After they’ve woken from hibernation.”

“I see them every day. I’m out in the woods a lot.” He chewed his lip. “They really only partially hibernate, though. But yeah, I guess you could say I’ve seen a lot of bears here in Deep Creek.”

He’d seen bears. Recently. Her pulse thumped in her neck and she leaned forward, as if being near him would make the bears closer. Excitement rang in her ears. “Where? Can you show me, or at least give me some pointers where to look? I can’t wait to see them.”

“My best advice is to keep your eyes open. You never know when a bear will appear right in front of you.”

Wolves of Willow Bend Book 9.5

synopsis-fall-cornucopia

Meet Jake Danes of Hudson River—Lone Wolf, avid gamer, extreme sports enthusiast, and surfer. He’s spent the last two years roaming free, exploring the world and escaping the dark place his pack had become after betrayal and murder tore them apart. Sure, life changed back home, but Jake’s having way too much fun to return—riding the waves in Monterrey and living out of a van. It’s the perfect life, one he never wants to give up, no matter how many calls he’s fielding from his big brother…then he catches her scent.

Mimi Chase wanted one perfect year. Time away from pack politics and her mother’s matchmaking efforts. Ever since her big brother settled into mating with a healer, Mimi’s mom seems to have gone into overdrive—throwing her at every eligible male in the pack. Choosing to roam seemed the best option, and California the ideal location to get away from everything pack related. Her plans for art classes, yoga on the beach, maybe a cooking lesson or two while living a hippy dippy lifestyle are all she cares about…until another wolf butts into her every activity.

Doesn’t he know the rules?

Lone Wolves aren’t supposed to form relationships, so why doesn’t he catch a hint? Worse, why isn’t she working harder to make sure he does?

review-fall-cornucopia

Mimi just wanted to get away from her mother and pack drama. Mason granted her wish. One year in California to study and experience life outside the pack.

Jake left Hudson River and went lone wolf two years ago. He wanted to go where he wanted when he wanted following the waves and enjoying life. Now there is a pretty little wolf on his beach. One of my favorite scenes is their meeting in the excerpt below, but my favorite quote occurs a little bit after that as they go to get coffee with Mimi driving.

“Holy crap, where did you learn to drive?” The words burst out of him.

“Evading the dog catcher 101.” She spotted the coffee stand she’d missed earlier, the coffee cup sign was a dead giveaway.

Mimi is the perfect foil for Jake. She is smart and funny and snarky. We get to know more about Mitch the enforcer for their area, after Mimi encounters a wolf that doesn’t smell quite right to her. With Jake and Mimi thrown together at least while the enforcer checks out the mysterious wolf, we really get to know them both.

Quick little peeks of Mason and Brett as well as Julian.

As for Jake and Mimi, I love the way they fight, the way they play and the way they flirt. So much happens in this book it will keep you on your toes and anxious for the next one. I know I can’t wait!

Mimi grabbed a blanket and her yoga mat from the back of her Mini Cooper. She loved the tiny little vehicle. No matter how often her brother scoffed at the minute size of the car, she didn’t care. It was perfect for her. Compact, like she was, and capable of great speeds—just like her. Locking it up, she glanced east at the rising sun and smiled. It was a little after six in the morning and she’d already had a bit of a run, a lovely cup of hot tea with lemon and ginger to cleanse her system, and she would enjoy the full sunrise and rolling surf with her yoga.

Pausing, she took a deep breath of the salt flavored air. She loved the way the beach smelled. Warm sand. Cool water. Brine. Fish. Birds. Even the coconut oil favored by some of the sunbathers and honest sweat from those running on the paths—they all combined to soothe her soul. Tucking the rolled blanket and yoga mat beneath her arm, she closed the hatch on the car and pivoted to walk toward the beach.

A hint of wolf on the breeze had her pausing to scan the area. Other than a handful of vehicles in the lot, and a couple of runners jogging farther away, she didn’t see anyone. Still, she tested the scent once more. It was faint, as though diluted by the breeze and time. She tracked it all the way to a dilapidated Volkswagen van. It reminded her of the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo without the paint job.

The scent of wolf grew stronger. The van had to belong to whomever the wolf was, but the lack of fresh markers told her while his scent lingered, he wasn’t present. Adjusting her grip on the rolled blanket and mat, she circled away from the van and continued toward the beach all the while reminding herself that other Lone Wolves may choose to wander California for the same reason she did. No one claimed the beautiful state…well at least not this far north. The closest pack to her location was Sutter Butte, but she’d never heard any word of them taking an interest in the beaches.

Then again, she didn’t talk to a lot of people about the political geography of packs. If it’s all the same, I’d prefer not to encounter any of them. They have a bad rap and I’m on a journey of serenity, and self-discovery…and totally avoiding Mother’s matchmaking. The little voice at the end sounded way too much like her brother Owen’s, and she giggled. Owen, at least, had been sympathetic to her cause when she’d told him and Mason why she wanted to take the time to study in the Golden State.

Her mother’s habit of making pro and con lists for all of the pack’s current eligible bachelors had been bad enough, but when she’d talked to Gillian about potential mates in Hudson River and began colluding with Claudia Buckley about Delta Crescent, Mimi wanted out.

It was so bad, she’d actually asked Owen to get Gillian pregnant just to distract their mother. The silence on his end of the phone had been priceless, followed by peals of laughter from Gillian. Fortunately, her desperation had communicated itself well enough and he’d endorsed her request. Mason made her promise to return at the end of one year, even if she was enjoying herself, and she would be free to return to her studies after, if that was her desire.

Mason is the bomb. She hopped over the rocks to land on the sand and began to stroll in search of a spot that would speak to her. Not only had her alpha understood her dilemma and sympathized with it, he didn’t chastise her for the need to stretch herself beyond the confines of pack and parental expectation. Mimi’s skills for tracking had earned her high marks growing up, and more than one offer from the Hunters to apprentice. It made sense—both her father and her brother were Hunters. Even her two younger brothers were well on the way toward Hunter apprenticeships. Felicity had zero interest in the Hunter parts of their DNA, she preferred her flowers and cultivation, working closely with Tiffany Huston. Still, Mimi didn’t share her sister’s interest in horticulture or her mother’s desire to educate their young or her father and brothers’ drive to protect the pack.

She was…not sure who I am, which is why I am doing this. The year away from her mother served two purposes; she could take some classes and test her areas of interest from art to acting to writing. She could study yoga and find some serenity. Maybe even figure out who she was, because wasn’t that the whole point of a roam? Most wolves took time to roam the country; some even went around the world.

Murphy had done that and came home with a mate. Mimi grimaced. She loved Murphy, but really, could she have not brought home some gorgeous Italian and mated him with all the requisite gossip? It had Mimi’s mother nudging her to consider a year abroad in…where else? Italy. Shaking her head, she paused on a perfectly smooth area of sand and spread her blanket before unrolling her yoga mat in the center.

Closing her eyes, she took several deep breaths. Inhaling calm, and exhaling the stress. Her mother was in Willow Bend. Mimi was in California. No ridiculous blind dates or not-so-casual meetings with eligible bachelors. Thank God Dylan mated before her mother got it into her head to throw Mimi at every male who came along, she’d actually had a crush on Dylan and he definitely fell into the category of eligible before Chrystal.

Growling, she opened her eyes and glared at the water. She was hardly alone on the beach. Laughter drifted towards her from where the surfers made their way toward deeper water, or where some sat astride their boards waiting for the water to come in. She was supposed to be letting go of her anxiety and not stressing about her mother, mating, or any of a dozen other issues being so far away from the pack could rouse in her.

She’d been in California for three weeks. Three gloriously wonderful, and peaceful weeks. This morning marked a full forty-eight hours since her mother’s last phone call. As loathe, as she was to hurt her feelings, Mimi couldn’t help but be relieved that distance had finally done what she hadn’t been able to manage.

Her mother was quiet.

So hush… Telling herself repeatedly didn’t silence the nagging internal monologue. Mindful of her surroundings, she quieted her growl and concentrated on her breathing. Mountain pose let her stretch her hands toward the sky and raise her face to the breeze. It elongated her spine and let her stretch the muscles from her hamstrings to her deltoids. The wind caressed her face and tousled her hair and batted away the riot of thoughts invading her mind.

From mountain she went to tree pose and rested her right foot against the side of her left knee. Her muscles quivered at first, but gradually she relaxed into the sturdiness. Like the tree she emulated, she let the woes of her mother’s romantic aspirations blow past her. The steadiness bolstered her confidence.

Warrior pose drew away the last curtain and let her mind relax. Her wolf stretched within her, their hearing seeming to sharpen as they noticed the increase of traffic beyond, the crash of water against the shore, and the call of birds overhead. Wolf and woman catalogued the sounds as she pushed her body, identifying any potential threats or lack thereof and remaining mindful.

By the time she drifted into a graceful downward dog, she’d relaxed her breathing and banished her anxiety. Curling her toes, she concentrated on feeling the wholeness of the position, the hinging arch of her hips and the warmth of the sand beneath the mat and blanket.

From triangle pose to seated twists to bridges, she pushed her body to achieve perfect serenity while maintaining her sense of being in the present. The sun warmed her as it continued a steady rise, and she basked in the rays as they heated her skin. When she finally settled into a lotus pose, she let her mind drift, as though flotsam upon the waves before her.

The world withdrew, leaving her alone with the lapping water, humming cars, and screech of seagulls…then water dripped on her. The icy sensation of splashing drops was cold against her skin. Though there had been no call for rain in the forecast, she fought to hold onto her sense of inner peace and deepened her breathing…only to inhale a lungful of coconut and brine mingling with the green scent of dewy sea grass atop the sand dunes with slivers of mint and…

Mimi jerked her eyes open and stared into the blue eyes of the wolf squatting right in front of her. His long, straggly hair clung wetly to his face and shoulders. The wet suit left little of his physique to the imagination, and he canted his head as though trying to figure her out. This close, however, she couldn’t miss a single nuance of his expression or the drops of water sliding off of him to splash wetly against her legs.

How the hell had he approached her so stealthily that she hadn’t sensed or scented him before he dripped on her?

Worse…who was he and what did he want?

“Hey, gorgeous,” he said, as though aware of her racing her thoughts. “What brings a sexy little wolf like you to my stretch of beach?” A slow grin spread his mouth wide, and her stomach did a little flip flop. He was gorgeous and damn if he didn’t know it.

Just what she needed…a hot, sexy wolf who was most assuredly male and made her wolf stand up to take notice. Ignoring her animal’s very natural curiosity, she narrowed her eyes. “I was enjoying a quiet morning. Now go away.”

One thing about having Owen for a brother, she wasn’t helpless, even if she was tiny. Closing her eyes again, she forced her muscles to relax and prayed he’d take the direction well, even as she prepared for the worst.

Snow wolf

Ranae is the youngest of the Buckleys— the only girl among three powerful male siblings. Her restlessness and dominant nature affected her every relationship within Willow Bend, not to mention testing the patience of her Alpha. Apprenticeship to the Hunters fed her desire for a purpose. When her Alpha and eldest brother ask her to undertake a mission to the Yukon territory, she’s thrilled at the opportunity to be useful. Clashing with the Diesel was the last thing she expected on the dangerous assignment.

Diesel, the oldest Alpha in the U.S. packs, lives a gray existence. The loss of his mate so many decades ago wears away at him until he doesn’t give a damn about anything. The problems of the other packs are not his, and he prefers to be left in isolation. The arrival of the Chief Enforcer annoys him, but it is the wolf traveling with him who wakes the predator in Diesel. The scent of mate clings to her, but she rejects his overtures and challenges him on every level.

War may be coming for the Yukon, but Diesel’s battle is very personal…

Hannah

All my life, I’ve only wanted one thing: someone to love me and someone who will let me love them in return. This seems like a simple request, but I was born to parents who wished I had died of childhood leukemia, instead of my younger sister, and who have ignored me no matter how much I’ve tried to please them. I’m starved for affection, addicted to the feeling when someone cares about me, which has led to a love life filled with either boys I’ve scared off, or men all too eager to take advantage of me. I thought I would never find a man who could feed my craving for constant attention—and then I met Leo. He fills the void inside of me, haunts my dreams, and does things to me in bed that are so good, they’re probably illegal. I can only pray I don’t scare him off once he figures out just how needy I really am.

Leo

There are very few people in this world I’ve ever been able to form an emotional attachment to, but the moment I saw Hannah, I knew she was mine. We were bound together by fate, our paths crossing first as children, then as adults, each time marking me. She doesn’t know it but I’ve been watching her for a year now, studying her, stacking the deck so when I do make my move, there’s no way she’ll ever escape me. But my world is a harsh, cruel place, and the cartel I work for demands absolute loyalty and trust…a loyalty Hannah has yet to earn in the dangerous eyes of my employers. There is only one way to ensure Hannah’s absolute devotion, and I hope that she doesn’t hate me forever when she finds out that not only have I brainwashed her into loving me, but that I don’t feel an ounce of guilt about doing it. She’s mine, only mine, and I’m keeping her forever.

Warning:

This story features a rough and demanding Dom who’s completely devoted to bringing his baby girl pleasure through such unconventional means as spanking, mild BDSM, D/S, roleplaying, and various other forms of wicked kinkery.

Summer My Review

Right off the bat, THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR EVERYONE! This is a note from Ann at the beginning of the book. She means every single word!
Dear Beloved Reader,
If you’ve read my work before you already know that I’m a filthy, dirty bitch in the bedroom and you’re ready for the ensuing sexy times. For my first time readers, please be aware that my sex scenes do not fade to black, and my characters are not big into missionary under the sheets with the lights off for procreation while thinking of England sex. That said, Leo is a kinky, kinky bastard and even though he’s into Daddy/princess play, in no way-shape-or form does it ever become pedophile/incest role playing.
Instead, the ‘Daddy Dom’ dynamic is one of love and trust, where the Dom enjoys caring completely for his baby girl, helping her grow into a stronger person, making her happy, while giving her the discipline she both needs and desires. This is a consensual relationship between two adults, and in my opinion, Daddy/princess play is a very loving form of BDSM that is caring and full of lots of open affection. Like everything else in life it means different things to different people so what I may find kinky you may find vanilla, and vice versa.
So, get your seatbelt on and your vibrator handy, ’cause you’re in for a heck of a ride.
Ann

Ann Mayburn. ObsessionFinal (Kindle Locations 16-26). Honey Mountain Publishing. Kindle Edition. That said, I loved this book. Once I was able to get my head into the point of view of a cartel family it flowed correctly in my mind. Leo’s heart is in the right place, twisted though it is. Hannah in her own way is almost as bad, with her clingy and stalker tendencies. So it really is a match made in, umm, heaven? The picture painted is that of a loving family with a problem of trust. The opening is going to be hard for some readers to grasp, but reminding yourself this is a cartel family helps it make sense. Leo’s brother’s greedy, selfish, ex wife had her own child kidnapped. The result is not pleasant for anyone.

Leo’s mother wants to find a way to be sure that any woman her sons get involved with will never betray them, and be loving spouses and mothers.

Twisted yes, but Leo does it right. The Daddy Dom in him is perfect for Hannah. She needs love, care and trust. Leo gives her that and more.

Extremely hot sex scenes with BDSM play. Keep yourself hydrated while reading. Ann is superb at writing these. This is a dark romance and one that is definitely worth reading.

Summer Exerpt

As I scanned the dance floor, I was surprised by how many couples were dancing so close you couldn’t slip a feather between them. The sexual energy was thick, and I squeezed my legs when a pulse of blood rushed between them. My nipples tingled and I shifted on the couch, tugging my skirt again to make sure I wasn’t flashing anyone.“Hannah,” Joy said as she elbowed me in the ribs. “That guy is totally checking you out.”

“What guy?”

“That scary-looking one with the sexy hair and psycho eyes.”

“Who?”

“Heavy brow, broad forehead, square jaw, and hair that Thor would be envious over.”

I followed the direction of Joy’s pink-painted fingernail and it didn’t take me long to figure out who she was talking about.

I’d always inwardly snorted when I’d read the description of a woman being struck dumb by the sight of a man, but I wasn’t anymore—’cause I could barely breathe.

He was fascinating, and I found myself unable to look away.

Dressed in a pair of faded jeans that fit his athletic figure like a glove, his body was bigger and stronger than that of any other man around us, including the bouncers. As best I could tell in the club lighting, he had long, thick golden-brown hair that fell to his broad shoulders in messy waves, framing an unusual face that was roughly masculine, all carved cheekbones and thick jaw. Not a pretty boy by any means, or even a boy at all. No, this guy was one hundred percent confident man. His chest appeared impossibly broad and his torso tapered down to a trim waist. Everything about him seemed to reek of health and vitality.

While my gaze wandered his body, my attention was drawn to his solid right wrist, which had a black leather band wrapped around it. I found the sight of that black band incredibly sexy and wondered when the hell I’d developed a fetish for men’s wrists. My breasts grew heavy and this odd…carnal urge began to burn in my belly

The air around me thickened as our gazes met and he strode through the crowd to our table, drawing people’s attention like a magnet. He wasn’t conventionally attractive, his features too heavy, the lines going across his broad forehead too thick, and his nose broken too many times, but he was charismatic in a way I’ve never experienced. I couldn’t blame the crowd for turning to watch him as he stalked towards us. He prowled like a beast and his intense, direct stare turned me on even as his approach made me increasingly nervous.

“Bet he’s got a really thick dick,” Kayla whispered as we all silently watched him.

By the time he reached our couch, we were full-on staring at him, but it was Kayla who spoke first with a flirty little, “Hi.”

Ignoring her, he held out his hand to me and commanded in a deep voice, “Dance with me.”

It wasn’t a request, it was an order, and I felt a sense of almost relief that I didn’t have to worry about making the decision of saying yes or no. How odd. I must be drunker than I thought because I wasn’t alarmed by his domineering manner in the least. Instead, a fuzzy warmth tingled through my body as he kept all of his attention solely on me, despite Kayla’s obvious pouting at being ignored.

After a quick glance at my friends—Joy was staring at him as if he was Channing Tatum doing a full strip tease in front of us—I placed my hand in his, and then tried to jerk away as an electrical charge zapped between us.

The mysterious man gently led me out of the seating area with his hand resting lightly on my lower back, his good manners a direct contrast to his rough image.

Alcohol obliterates the filter between my mind and my mouth so I found myself blurting out, “Why do you want to dance with me?”

He drew me closer, then dipped his face down to nuzzle my ear as he said, “Because you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. What’s your name?”

I desperately wanted to believe him, but a lifetime of being told I wasn’t good enough reared its ugly head and twisted his words inside of my mind, making me hear them as a mocking insult.

“My name’s Hannah, but you don’t have to give me a line. Why did you really ask me?”

He jerked back and looked down at me with a curious expression. “You don’t believe me?”

Anger, mixed with a disconcerting desire, had me tugging away from him. “I don’t want to dance with you anymore.”

When I tried to let go of his hand, his gaze cleared and, for the first time, I felt like he looked at me, really looked at me—then he gave me an utterly charming smile that flooded my panties with desire.

“I guarantee you do.”

Holy hell, I think a small climax fluttered through my clenching sex.

Examining him closer, I was once again reminded that he was a solid man with a presence as big as his frame, drowning me in his heat. When he placed his hand gently beneath my chin and forced me to meet his gaze, I couldn’t find the strength to resist his unspoken control. We studied each other for a moment in the flashing lights of the club, desire curling low in my belly as I drank in his harsh good looks. This was a confident, powerful, intimidating man. The exact opposite of my usual type of guy. I liked smart, quiet, and nerdy. Or at least I used to. My throbbing clit assured me that my tastes in men had changed.

Big time.

Now, mature, dangerous, and built like a professional wrestler seemed to be my preference.

In a way, he did actually remind me of a professional wrestler my cousin used to watch, Triple H. Same heavy brow and deep-set eyes, along with a good dose of menace. The man holding my face as gently as could be was the kind of men others feared, but not me. I had the strangest sense that he’d protect me, if I let him.

He raised my hand to his lips and gently brushed them over my skin, then, when his tongue flicked out to taste me, my nipples became so hard they ached. “One dance. Let me show you how good things will be between us.”

“Will be?” I rolled my eyes even as my panties were wet with desire and my pulse throbbed with growing need. “You sound awfully sure about that.”

“Baby girl, one thing I can promise you is that I’ve never been as sure about anything in my life. Enough talking, I’ve waited what seems like an eternity for this moment. I need to touch you.”

A tremble of need raced through me and the thought and the thought of rubbing my drunk and horny body against his seemed to be the best idea I’d had in ages.

Summer About the Author

ann-mayburn-new

Ann Mayburn

With over forty published books, Ann is Queen of the Castle to her husband and three sons in the mountains of West Virginia. In her past lives she’s been an Import Broker, a Communications Specialist, a US Navy Civilian Contractor, a Bartender/Waitress, and an actor at the Michigan Renaissance Festival. She also spent a summer touring with the Grateful Dead-though she will deny to her children that it ever happened.

From a young Ann has had a love affair with books would read everything she could get her hands on. As Ann grew older, and her hormones kicked in, she discovered bodice ripping Fabio-esque romance novels. They were great at first, but she soon grew tired of the endless stories with a big wonderful emotional buildup to really short and crappy sex. Never a big fan of purple prose, throbbing spears of fleshy pleasure and wet honey pots make her giggle, she sought out books that gave the sex scenes in the story just as much detail and plot as everything else-without using cringe worthy euphemisms. This led her to the wonderful world of Erotic Romance, and she’s never looked back.

Now Ann spends her days trying to tune out cartoons playing in the background to get into her ‘sexy space’ and has accepted that her Muse has a severe case of ADD.

Ann loves to talk with her fans, as long as they realize she’s weird, and that sarcasm doesn’t translate well via text.
