A MatchMaker Story: Bringing Down Romeo By D.L. Jackson – Black Hills Wolves #53

Bringing Down Romeo
Black Hills Wolves #53
D.L. Jackson

Summer Blurb

Hide your girlfriends, hide your daughters.

Tad Dawson, confirmed bachelor and runway model, has come back to the Black Hills for his brother’s wedding. Also known as Romeo for his love them and leave them attitude, Tad has a reputation to lose and a woman to win. However, he won’t be able to do it on his own, since the woman he wants would rather assault him with nail guns, power saws and rocks. Not what he expected when he turned on the charm.

Megan could use a good dose of anger management, along with a shot from Cupid’s bow, and lord knows she has a lot to be mad about when it comes to Romeo. Tad left her five years before after she declared they were mates. Not only did she have to deal with a crazy Alpha, who got off on tossing her to the wolves, she’s heard rumors Tad’s appetite for anything with a skirt has grown since he left. Not that she could confirm it. He’s hasn’t called or written once.

For Tad to win the love of his life, he’s going to need some help, and the four pack matchmakers have decided they are just the Wolves to assist, whether he wants their help or not. No tactic is too dirty or underhanded. Bringing down Romeo is going to take every trick in their match-maker’s bag.

Bagging the girl, well, that could be a bit trickier.

Will the four matchmakers beat the nearly impossible odds, or will their tactics unravel at the seams?

Before the wedding is over, someone is going down, and if the matrons have any say, it’s going to be hard.

Summer My Review

Well the matrons are at it again, but this time it’s a little different.Tad aka Romeo left the Black Hills when Magnum was threatening to have him fixed because of his sleeping around with the she wolves. On the day he left Magnum had decided on a mate for Megan, she was only eighteen and had run to avoid the mating. Now she had to accept her fate or her family and friends would pay. She knew even then Tad was her mate, she had wanted a kiss from him so he would know too. It didn’t happen.

Now five years later he is back for his brother’s wedding, to a human no less. Something unheard of when Magnum was Alpha. He was scared that he would find Megan mated with pups and happy. Instead this was his reception from her.

He headed for the family Hummer he’d borrowed from the business in Hot Springs, since his car wouldn’t make the logging roads in—not without dropping the muffler.

Bang, bang, bang.

Tad turned toward the source of the noise and froze in his tracks. Not three buildings over, a slender woman in jeans and a green tank top held a pneumatic nail gun. She moved around, working on the deck of a partially framed building.

She stopped and looked up, flipping her dark hair over one shoulder.
Tad changed course and headed for the new construction. “Hey.”

She turned and moved away to another section of the building.

Tad followed her around the side. “Megan? Is that you?”

She spun around, lifted her hand to shield her eyes from the sun, and stared at him. “Dawson?”

“Yeah. Don’t you recognize me, Meg?”

Pthunk, pthunk, pthunk, pthunk. Meg fired a series of nails.
Tad dove out of the way and rolled behind a shed. “Hey! Is that any way to say hello?”

Pthunk, pthunk, pthunk. They struck the side of his hiding place.

“Whoa, what the hell did I do?” He sniffed. Yeah, that shower he’d skipped out on. Not good. Had she caught a whiff of the women who were hanging on him before he left? Could explain her hostility.

“You really have to ask?”

“Go. Leave me alone, Tad Dawson. I don’t want you here.”

“You are such a liar, Meg.” He stepped out from behind the shed. “The last time we talked, you wanted me to kiss you, to prove I’m your mate—or has that tidbit slipped your memory?”

She picked up a cordless saw and started toward him. “Oh, I remember quite clearly.”

Tad eyed the shiny blade. “What do you think you’re going to do with that?”

She smiled. “Use your imagination.” She fired it up. The whirling blade screamed.

Tad backed away. “I’ll come back when you cool down.”

“I wouldn’t recommend it.” She glared at him.

Tad stalked to his truck. Why did everyone threaten to take his nuts off? He jumped in and slammed the door, watching the woman on the deck with the evil tool in her hands. She didn’t mean it. Did she?

Megan flipped him the bird.

Good probability. His wolf chuckled.

Who asked you?

Not exactly the best way to start a relationship. But don’t worry the Matrons have a plan. Besides his brother’s wedding, Tad pursues his mate. I laughed and cried and well I just love weddings.

Summer My Review

If you are following this awesome series, you will remember a glimpse of the beginning from Another Chance BHW #41.

It is that beginning which is truly the start of something very special for our two main characters, Riley and Amber. Here is one of my favorite scenes.

Luna, the man was gorgeous. She gaped at him, a jagged lightning bolt of need striking her dumb. Muscled and masculine, with bulging biceps and thighs and sharp angles in all the right places, he sported a scruffy head of inky hair she ached to run her fingers through. The hint of a five o’clock shadow sculpted his cheeks and strong chin.

An erotic shiver coiled through her, a sensation she’d never felt before. A sense of…rightness. Something like…destiny…her fate somehow entwined with that of the distant man.

She stared at the baseball player’s image on the screen, stunned when the ball dribbled out of his glove and he glowered back into the camera as if he could see her, too, his eyes sharp and cool as frost. She recoiled, putting more distance between her and the TV.

The man stepped off the pitcher’s mound, a dumbfounded expression narrowing his eyes. He bit his sensual lower lip. Had he forgotten himself and where he was? She suspected his air of befuddlement was unnatural, a condition foreign to such a dominant and confident man.

A few moments later, he tossed a giant cream puff, the opposing batter squashing it in an instant. He raised his left arm as the ball shot back to him like a bullet. She could almost hear the stunning impact of horsehide and flesh as the ball barreled into his hand like a speeding locomotive. Her jaw dropped, and she stared at the screen in horror as the big, sexy male fell to the pitcher’s mound and rolled around in the dirt in apparent agony.

His pain became her pain. Sickness gripped her at the hideous scene unfolding before her eyes.

“No,” she whispered. “No, no, no, no, no!

She reached toward the television set, wanting to grab the male through the flickering screen and bring him toward her to hug him against her body and give him comfort. To heal him.

Without warning, four wolves and a giant bear bounded into the room, howling and roaring as they skidded to a halt and slid back into their human forms.

“Dear Sweet Luna,” one of the wolves shouted. “We’ve found them.” The man knelt beside her, grasping her hand in his much larger one. She flinched away, yanking her fingers from his steady grip.

“Sweetheart, it’s me,” he murmured.

She stared at the TV and the writhing ballplayer, even as the others swept up Garnet and bore her away.

“Help him,” she mumbled, her gestures frantic as she pointed at the jumping images.

“Help who?” The wolf looked around and then shook his head. “Amber, honey, don’t you recognize me?” Tears streamed down her rescuer’s face, and his voice choked. “It’s Chance.”
Amber’s Ace (Black Hills Wolves #51) (Kindle Locations 299-321). Decadent Publishing. Kindle Edition.

What’s so special you ask. Aside from being rescued from an encampment Amber just claimed her mate, and he heard her across the miles. Unfortunately his injury and her experiences under Magnum’s rule may very well keep them apart.

While Amber and her twin sister Garnet have started a successful jewelry business, Riley starts working with the young wolves, swimming with them and teaching them teamwork with baseball.

A love story at it’s best with the aid of the Matchmaking Matrons. Whose idea this time is a variation on a barn raising with an auction for picnic baskets. Both male and female would participate, with culinary offerings or something from their own specialty. To take place once the baseball field was completed.

A tearful yet happy read, as Amber and Riley work their way to acceptance of what happened to them.

Summer Blurb

The Matrons of the Tao Pack are on the hunt, seeking out unmated couples who would be a perfect match – even if they don’t know it yet.

Sander Burrows is a wolf with a broken spirit. During thirty-five years away from home and pack, he made a life for himself among the humans. Now, tragedy and a sense of failure drive him home into the arms of his loving family.

Aurora “Rory” Hanson hates Sander almost as much as she loves him. Humiliated at seventeen when he stood her up at the annual spring dance, she has since lived a life of relative solitude on the fringes of the pack.

When Sander catches sight and scent of Rory, feelings run hot. His wolf recognizes his mate and he’ll do just about anything to overcome Rory’s dislike of him. Even accept the assistance of four interfering busybodies.

The matrons want the old spring dance revived and what better way to “help” two fated wolves to happiness than to force Rory and Sander to work together on the organizing committee.

Finding love doesn’t get any easier even for wolves in their fifties. Misunderstandings, old hurts, and the sharp edge of Miss Kathy’s tongue must all be overcome if two old friends are to achieve true happiness.

Summer My Review

Second chances are the name of the game for the Tao Pack. Let’s face it since Drew took over more and more of the pack has returned. Each family with it’s own issues, drive and solutions.

The Matchmaker sub-series stars four Matrons of the pack. The self designated matchmakers, Miss Kathy, Miss Lonnie, Miss Fern and Miss Claire. They are convinced that to be strong,  the pack needs new mated couples to produce offspring.

Aurora (Rory) never left but stayed on the outskirts of the pack. She has a gift with plants and herbs, supplying them to the healers and the new diner.

As a police officer, Sander Burrows has had enough of the outside world when he faced yet one more failure. Not a failure as you might think, but more the inability to prevent yet another young person from falling prey to the streets. He feels the need for home and pack so he returns to the Black Hills and his family.

When Rory catches his scent near the construction of the new pack function hall, she knew she should have stayed away. Seeing him brought back painful memories she’d kept buried for years.

The matchmakers set things in motion by assigning Sander to escort Rory to the meetings for planning the opening of the function hall. Plans for a Spring Dance, that everyone seemed to be getting roped into a part of. This is a favorite scene from that meeting.

Thrum, thrum, thrum. Her pulse throbbed in her ears as she studied the man she had loved for most all of her life. His grin softened, the humor melting to a stronger, richer emotion. Paul tapped his pen softly on his pad. Sliding lower in his seat, he surreptitiously tried to escape his unexpected position of third wheel.

“Aurora? Aurora Jane!” Miss Lonnie rapped her knuckles on the table, startling Rory from her reverie.

“I’m sorry?” She turned toward the elder, the stars in her eyes shattering when she realized everyone around the table stared at her.

“We were talking about the decorations, dear,” Miss Fern interjected gently. “Lonnie wanted to know if you had any thoughts on the design, a theme perhaps?”

Theme? Seriously? As of an hour ago, Rory had been ensconced in her nice, peaceful little cabin, believing she had successfully ducked the committee, and now they expected her to have a theme? “Umm, theme, theme, theme.” She rubbed her damp palms on her jean-clad thighs, desperate to gather her scattered wits. “I thought I would open it up to suggestions. Do a little canvassing around town, see what the consensus is. Also, umm, until I have the dimensions of the hall, it’s hard to know what I’m working with, how big it is.” With a concerted effort, she forced her mouth shut against the stream of inanity.

“I’m sure that’s something Sander can help you with, dear,” Miss Lonnie said with a wicked smile as she turned her attention to the dark-haired wolf. “You’ll be happy to show Aurora how big it is, won’t you, Sander?” Turning in his seat, Sander took his sweet time as he studied her. His slow, lazy regard sent such a rush of blood to her cheeks, it made Rory light-headed.

“Miss Lonnie, I can’t think of anything I’d like to do more,” he drawled.

Hunkering down in her seat, Rory prayed for the ground to open up and swallow her whole. With a soft sigh, Paul reached beneath the table and gave the back of her hand a sympathetic pat.

It didn’t help. Nothing would help ever again.
Mating Dance (Black Hills Wolves #50) (Kindle Locations 539-555). Decadent Publishing. Kindle Edition.

Thus begins a challenge for Sander and Rory, could she get over the past and take her mate? Only time will tell.

Rory and Sander both work with the teens of the pack, and in the process learn more of the pack around them. I really loved the way this story played out. I cried more than once, mostly happy tears. So be sure have some tissues handy. This yet another great love story from Merryn complete with lots of sizzle.

Summer My Review

One of the things I love about the Black Hills Wolves is that every author involved has their own take on it. They have the structure and the primary Characters and they can choose to included them or not. We usually see at least a peak at Drew, Ryker or Gee as well.

In this book we meet park ranger Wyatt who is a wolf and a curious biologist Isabelle who has been tracking a wolf all the way from Georgia. Now we all know “ahem” there are no wolves in the Black Hills. However she is certain the wolf came here. Ordered to keep her from discovering the pack Wyatt arranges for some mishaps to chase her on her way. This is a favorite scene one of the many little things that happen to our unsuspecting doctor.
The ground shook from the force of galloping hooves while limbs snapped and cracked as debris fell from the trees. Many of the lower branches were pulled off in the animals’ haste to get by.

Damn twins.

Drew said to make Isabelle’s stay uncomfortable, not attempt to kill her. He couldn’t imagine how they’d managed to drive the herd through this narrow spot, but he planned to have words with them later.

As soon as the herd had passed and he believed it to be safe, Wyatt leaned back and looked down at the tiny woman in his arms. She hadn’t panicked and, even now, only appeared somewhat shaken. “Are you okay?”

Her eyes were a bit dazed. “I, uh….” She licked her lips. “Yeah. I think so.” The sight of her pink tongue sliding across her lips captivated him. consequences, he slowly lowered his head and touched his mouth to hers. Tasting. Testing.
Your Wild Heart (Black Hills Wolves Book 14) (Kindle Locations 313-321). Decadent Publishing.

This begins a very hot very intense relationship between the two of them. Isabelle is quite stubborn and refuses to be chased away by the unexpected. I loved the verbal sparring between these two.

Lots of laughter, some hold your breath moments and lots of sizzling sex made this read hard to put down.

When Alanna’s son Colt gets shot and ends up in the hospital where no wolf should ever be. His doctor is Bastian and she finds herself in a position she never expected. She couldn’t wipe his memory as she did with the others in the emergency room, so she put him to sleep and took him home. This is part of the conversation after he wakes and the one with Drew.

He dropped his shoulders. “I don’t understand the feelings you rise in me. I want to be angry with you, shake the truth out of you. Yet, I can’t bring myself to do it. Am I crazy? Maybe.”
“Promise me you won’t speak of this to anyone, and I’ll take you home in the morning.” Her Wolf paced and whimpered at the same time. Yeah, Alanna didn’t want him to leave either. But what kind of life could she offer him— even if he could accept her true nature? The heartache of a rejection would be too much for her to bare. The only option was to let him go and make sure he kept his promise.

“Yes, I promise.”

She sagged in relief. “I’m going to check on Cody and make a phone call.”

Hoping he would take the hint she wanted privacy, she made her way to Cody’s room and closed the door before pulling out her cell.

Drew answered on the first ring. “How’s Cody?”

Alanna glanced at her son and some of her tension eased. “He’s doing better.” She paused, searching for the words. “Bastian doesn’t know about us. He thinks I’m a witch.” “You let him believe that?” “Yes. He’s grandmother was one. To him it makes sense, I guess.” His heavy sigh sent a shiver down her spine. If she hurt lying to her mate, it was ten times worse lying to her Alpha. “I think he’s my mate.”

Silence filtered through the cell phone connection, soaring her stomach. She sat next to Cody and racked her fingers through his fur. “Drew, I’m sorry. I messed up, but I freaked… I….”

He let out a low growl. “The human is your responsibility. Mate or no mate. Are we clear?”

“Get some rest, Alanna. Keep me posted on how Cody is doing.”

“I will.” She ended the call and studied Cody, hoping he’d wake soon and be able to tell her who shot him. All the while figuring out what she would do able Bastian. One thing was for sure, she couldn’t ignore the urge to mate. She had to know one way or another. Even if it meant living the rest of her life with a broken heart if he rejected her.
Tempting the Wolf (Black Hills Wolves Book 13) (Kindle Location 281-299). Decadent Publishing.

More than immediately meets the eye here. Bastian is in danger and so is Alanna because of the identity of Cody’s shooter.

A quick satisfying read, with some steamy sex and fur flying fights.

Dang this one damn near tore my heart out.
First Darci’s Aunt kept the message her father had written to her a secret until she graduated from college. I get she didn’t really know any better and wanted Darci to have a “normal” life. However, when Darci started shifting she should have given her the missive and traveled with her. Instead she fostered the hope that the shifting could be stopped and she could be a normal human. Now Darci thinks the shifting can be stopped if she seeks out the people in her dad’s letter. Little did she know that she would find her mate.

Ross is so sweet! He had no idea who was stumbling into his house during the violent storm. Darci completely took him by surprise, a delightful one. His mate sort of found him. A big surprise for him and me was when they were about to eat, one of my favorite scenes.

“Ready to eat? Burgers are done.” He piled the patties on a plate, collected the platter of fixings, and carried both to the table, setting them next to bowls of beans and slaw.

Darci sank onto a chair and slid a shiny purple laptop case next to her plate. “Thank you. Beans and coleslaw sound great.”

He sat across from her. “What, no burger?” He pointed at the beverages in the center of the table. “Water or coffee? There’s beer in the fridge if you prefer.”

“Water, thanks. And no burger. I, uh, don’t eat meat.”

He froze, his fork speared in the top burger on the pile. “Say what?”

She dropped a miniscule amount of beans and slaw on her plate while he gaped at her.

“But, how can you not eat meat. You’re a….” He bit back his next words. They hadn’t actually acknowledged their shifter identities.

“Wolf?” she finished for him.

He nodded. Good, he liked having the truth exposed. Would make it easier to segue into the and by the way, you’re my mate discussion. Later.

She poked at the slaw with her fork. “I never really gave the food thing much thought. My mom was human. My dad was a Werewolf. They died when I was six and my human aunt raised me. She’s vegan.”

“Sorry to hear about your parents.” Shitty way to grow up. He couldn’t imagine his life without the unconditional love and support of his parents.

“It’s okay.” She shrugged, a nonchalant gesture, but hurt glimmered in her eyes. “As a vegan, Aunt Jessica doesn’t eat or wear animal products. But she raised me vegetarian since she thought my Wolf side might need some animal protein.”

Ross snorted. “She was right.” He piled a meat patty, lettuce, and tomato on a bun. “No meat. It’s just contrary to the natural order of things.” Wolves hunt and eat what they kill. What did she do with hers? “You’re not supposed to play with the bunnies in the forest. You’re supposed to eat them.”
Diamond Moon (Black Hills Wolves #12) (Kindle Location 334-351). Decadent Publishing. Kindle Edition.

Oh and Ross has a kitten, I love it, a wolf with a kitten! I did a lot of sniffling and outright crying while reading this one. I just didn’t want to put it down. I would love to see more of this couple in future BHW books.

It’s a fate Aimee didn’t ask for and one she’s not at all happy about. She doesn’t want a mate. More to the point, she refuses to accept one. Even if that mate happens to be tall, muscular, and damn good with his hands. He won’t be able to seduce his way into her heart. She won’t let him.

He raised his fist for the third time, but the door swung open. There, on the other side of the threshold, stood his mate wrapped in nothing more than a delectable towel. Her mouth moved as if she were saying something, but he couldn’t get past how beautiful she looked. And smelled. Damn, he wanted to leap into her house and lick her.

“Well? I’m waiting?” She tapped her foot in clear irritation.

Oh, right. She’s been talking. “I’m sorry. I didn’t hear you.”

She rolled her eyes. “What gives you the right to hunt me down in the dead of night?”

The voices he’d heard earlier reached him clearly, and he realized the sounds came from a stereo somewhere in the house. She hadn’t been ignoring him. She’d been taking a bath. But that didn’t excuse her earlier behavior. “You’re my mate, and you lied to me. You told me you were married.”

“I showed you my wedding ring. I didn’t tell you a damn thing.”

He snorted at the distinction. “You meant for me to think you were married so I’d leave you alone. Why? Didn’t like the universe pairing you with a commoner?” There. He’d told her the truth.

“It wouldn’t have made any difference to me if you were a homeless bum or the prince of a European country. I just want to be left alone.”

Yeah. Like she would’ve turned her cute little nose up at a prince. He didn’t believe her for one second. But he couldn’t come right out and call her a liar. That would kill any shot they had of getting together. He’d waited his entire life to find her. As much as she irritated him, he still hoped they would find a way to make some sort of relationship work. “Fine. But if you wanted me to leave you alone, you should’ve had the decency to tell me to my face. If your ring meant half as much as it should, you wouldn’t be hiding behind it. And you most certainly shouldn’t use the memory of your dead husband to lie to people.”

She glared at him, and her body trembled. “You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Yeah. That’s what happens when you go around lying to people.”

“Okay. You want to know the truth?” Her eyes snapped with anger, but her scent held a sweet undertone of pleasure. She enjoyed arguing with him.

“My husband died two years ago from cancer. My pack did nothing to help him. They could’ve, but they chose not to. So no, I don’t give a shit if the heavens open up and the stars align to spell out, ‘he’s the one.’ My pack turned their back on me, so I’ve turned my back on their traditions.”

“You’re going to punish me for what they did. Or what they didn’t do as the case may be?”

Her eyes glittered with unshed tears. “Collateral damage.”

“But that’s not—”

“Life’s not fair.” She slammed the door in his face.

Most would consider their little spat a complete loss, lick their wounds, and be on their way. But he wasn’t like most people. If anything, their fight had convinced him the stars were right. She might not like the universe meddling in her life, but he was what she needed. And she was what he wanted.
Reluctant Mate (Black Hills Wolves Book 11) (Kindle Locations 162-189).Decadent Publishing.Kindle Edition.

With the gauntlet thrown, Jackson begins his quest to conquer his mate and show her that she isn’t betraying her first love.

A page turner with lots of clever word play, smoldering flirting and sizzling hot sex, but have those tissues handy, I definitely shed more than a couple of tears reading this one.

Human hunters have been plaguing the Black Hills wolves, now Stephen has scented them near the pack borders. As is a somewhat usual routine for him he goes to try to tempt his mate into bonding with him. Trying desperately to wear down her resistance. He just wishes he knew why she keeps pushing him away.Kate has problem, she can’t shift. No one knows not even her family, she stays away from pack runs and her Alpha for this reason. She is petrified of the recriminations of not being able to shift, even though Magnum is dead. She loves Stephen, knows he is her mate but she can’t let him become tied for live to a shifter who damaged in this way.

This is a favorite scene when Stephen is giving her the warning about the hunters.
His grip tightened, and he fought the urge to shake her into submission. Christ, she infuriated the shit out of him. “I don’t need you to be someone else. I just need you to be you. The exact way you are. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.”

Kate slumped and dropped her hands to her sides. “It won’t work, Stephen. You’re wasting your time with me.”

Brushing off his hold, she faced the forest once more and grasped the wood railing in front of her.

Still, she refused to give him a reason.

An unrelenting determination goaded him to push for more. He crowded into her personal space, plastering his bare chest to her stiff back. He dipped his head to the curve of her neck, the same delectable neck he’d dreamt of marking for years, and inhaled her scent. The sweet tinge of honeysuckle wrapped around his senses, driving the Wolf inside him nuts. She attempted to move away, but he slid an arm around her stomach, holding her in place. He ran his lips along the column of her throat while his body absorbed the tremble passing through her frame.

“Why, Kate? Why do you keep denying me?”

For one flicker of a moment, he thought she might give him a straight answer. Instead, she choked out, “It’s not meant to be. Please, leave me alone. I’m begging you.”

Fuck, she always pushed him away. Always kept to herself. Never trusted him enough to speak of her reservations. No matter how hard he tried to convince her she could open up to him, she ran.

Did she have any clue how much her denials affected him? His heart could only withstand so many jabs before it shattered into pieces, and she didn’t seem to care one damn bit.

“Fine. I’m going home.” Stephen heaved a frustrated sigh and dropped his arm. For once, he was too tired to chase her. He’d just tell her what he’d come to say and be on his way.

He stalked to the edge of the porch and paused on the last step. “Some hunters from Collins have been snooping around after Marston. I found traces of a human trail near the pack’s territory earlier tonight when I ran the borders. Be sure to keep your doors locked and don’t venture into the woods alone until this shit is sorted out.”

With his warning delivered, he stepped off the porch onto the dewy grass, the dampness tickling between his toes. Her faint sniffle reached his ears, and he forced himself not to race back to comfort her. Instead, he worked on steadying his thrumming pulse. Pushing past low-hanging branches, he slipped into a dense copse of trees behind her house and halted long enough to hear the slam of her screen door. Tilting his head to the side, he waited for the flip of her backdoor lock. At the low click, he continued on his way home to another morning spent in his lonely bed without his mate.

This one is a bit different from the others and in some ways has me wondering about Ryker’s Indian roots.

Sela is determined to film a documentary about the wolves of Los Lobos. What she doesn’t know is that they kind of frown on publicity here. She’s rented a cabin at the edge of the protected state forest certain she’ll be able to befriend a wild wolf or two. This documentary is a project she must complete. She’s put the last of her savings into this project and being alone with wolves will be a healing process for her. Her divorce has left her feeling inadequate in many ways.

Rio has been a lone wolf for a very long time. He is a forest ranger and was special forces in the military as well. Drew’s pack doesn’t hold much interest for him, even though he is technically a part of it.

When these two meet at Gee’s there is immediately a problem. Mainly her determination to film wolves. Even bigger is Rio’s realization that this feisty lady is his mate. He comes up with a plan that will help her and protect the Black Hills pack, this is a favorite scene as he tells her where to look.

The truck pulled beside the cabin to park. He got out with a plastic box and steel thermos in his hands. His damp black hair reflected sunbeams, giving him a fresh-from-the-shower vibe. “Good morning! I’m surprised to see you awake.”

She nodded, at a complete loss of anything to say.

He walked toward the porch with an easy gait. Goddamn the man, he looked even better in daylight. His eyes sparkled, root beer brown. “I don’t mean to bother you, but I have to drive past anyway.” He handed her the box and thermos. “I was going to set these on the porch and call later.”
The containers were warm in her hands. “What is this?”

“Coffee and fry bread. I made it this morning. There’s some honey in the kitchen cabinet that will make it taste even better.”

It sounded heavenly. “Thank you.”

“Enjoy your day.” Rio returned to the truck, providing a prime view of his muscular ass flexing in tight jeans. The sight was starting to sink in when he made an abrupt turn to face her. “I almost forgot. Are you planning to film wolves today?”

She shrugged. “I don’t expect to do any filming. I’ll have to find the wolves first. Set up a blind. I was going to take a hike this morning to get acquainted with the area.”

“You won’t have to go far.”

“What do you mean?”

He pointed toward a trail that ran along a dense thicket and disappeared into a ravine. “Follow the path about a half mile to the river. The grade is steep. You’ll have to do a little rock hopping. Find a comfortable place to set up a blind, wait, and he’s sure to come by.”

“A lone male wolf with black fur. This part of Gray Paw Mountain is his territory. Bring your camera because, at this time of year, a sighting is almost a sure thing.”
Portrait of a Lone Wolf (Black Hills Wolves Book 7) (Kindle Locations 408-423). Decadent Publishing. Kindle Edition.

Of course his plans kind of backfire and now he not only has to convince her not to leave but also convince her they are mates.

I really liked this take on the Black Hills wolves. I did a lot of laughing, but I kept waiting for Ryker to show as well. I was glad he didn’t, it made for a wonderfully unique tale.

Any of you who have been reading these books, but missed a few like I did, will appreciate this one more than ever.I now thoroughly understand where Colt got his anger and arrogance from. He really does storm right in with bad intentions and ends up pretty much in the same state as he did when he challenged Magnum. Only difference is he wakes up in the same place, not somewhere far away.

One of my favorite scenes is that confrontation with Drew, Gee and Ryker.

The son of a bitch had the gall to grin at him. What did Drew find amusing about this? He was about to be challenged, called out, and killed. Colt would do what he hadn’t been strong enough to do when Magnum had been in charge— take over the pack and finally lead them out of the Tao darkness.

“Drew Tao,” Colt had to speak the words correctly so Ryker and the others couldn’t interfere.

His cousin shook his head, looking over the bar to Gee who had stayed quiet the whole time. Colt had never been able to get a real read on the Were-bear, who played his cards close to his chest.

“Don’t kill him. I think he has guts. I want him around. At least for now.”

“What?” Colt shook his head. This wasn’t how things were done. He’d come to make a challenge. Drew needed to listen. “Drew Tao, I….”

Gee stepped out from behind the bar. If the Bear thought to throw him out again as he’d done ten years earlier, he could go ahead and try. If he landed on the street, Colt would shout his challenge from there. One way or the other, he would fight Drew for control of the pack. Hell would freeze over before he’d follow his cousin’s lead.

Drew walked toward him, but when he would have faced him, he headed for the exit instead. Was he cowardly? Is that why he left?

Colt had thought his cousin would be many things, but afraid hadn’t been one of them. Anger warred with frustration, and he growled, feeling his teeth elongate in his mouth. Colt had been waiting for this fight since the day Drew had taken off for who knew where and left them all to suffer at the hands of Magnum.

A whack to his head brought him up short. What the hell? Several seconds passed before he realized Gee stood behind him, holding a baseball bat. Stars passed in front of his eyes while Gee moved in front of him.

“Pup. Pass out. I don’t want to hit you again.”

“I’m not a pup anymore.” Why was it so hard to talk? The whole world went black.
When Hell Freezes (Black Hills Wolves Book 6) (Kindle Locations 62-78). Decadent Publishing. Kindle Edition.

What ensues is frustrating confrontations with Drew, lively exchanges with Tasha, and dealing with some pack security issues.  A wonderfully quick read with lots of all the good stuff.
