Winter Blog Review

The last thing Alex ‘Taz’ Davila expected when he got off the plane in Montana was to be sent directly on a mission. However once he arrives, he sees it won’t be a hardship to keep an eye on the lovely therapist, Hannah Kendricks.

With several attempts on her life, that she has been calling unfortunate mishaps; Hannah finally has to agree that there really is danger when it’s apparent that the brakes on her tractor have been tampered with.

She doesn’t know Taz has been sent to figure it all out, and she is of the firm belief she shouldn’t get involved with a patient/client. The ranch she runs specializes in helping former military re-enter society by treating their insecurities with hard work. The clients work with the horses some that have been abused, and also do other chores around the ranch.

This is a favorite scene, the first meeting and a manure fight. It’s a little long but it’s so worth the giggles.

“Who knows?” Hannah smiled, hoping to lighten the subject of dating. “My man might be the next person who walks through that door.”

Arching an eyebrow, Gavin leaned to his left and looked around her, which made Hannah turn, her pulse kicking up a notch.

The doorway remained empty.

She let go of the breath she’d been holding and laughed at herself. “It will happen when it happens. Until then, I have a fence to mend.” She shot a smile back at Gavin and swung around, heading for the exit, and ran into a wall of muscles.

The collision made her let go of the bucket. The plastic hit the ground, the lid popped off and fence staples spilled onto the floor. “Oh, for heaven’s sake.” She bent at the same time a man did and they knocked skulls.

Pain shot through her forehead and she sat back on her bottom. “Oh!”

The man she’d bumped into rocked back on his feet and sat down hard. His eyes glazed, and he swayed more than she did.

Hannah pushed past her own pain and leaned up on her knee, a staple piercing the fabric of her jeans. She didn’t care.

The man in front of her paled. He appeared like he was about to pass out.

“Hey.” She grabbed his arm and held him steady. “Are you all right?”

He nodded and pressed the fingers of both hands to his temples. “I’m fine,” he said, in clipped tones. When he dropped his hands, the haze in his eyes cleared, replaced by a concerned frown. “Did I hurt you?”

She shook her head, the pain receding.

He looked at the mess on the floor. “I’m sorry. I’ll get these.” He scooped up a handful of staples and deposited them into the plastic bucket.

Hannah came up on her haunches and helped collect the nails. In a couple of minutes, they’d secured all of the staples in the tub.

The man rose with the bucket, swayed a bit and then steadied.

Hannah straightened and held out her hand. “I’ll take those.”

He surrendered the container. “Please, accept my apologies.”

“No, it was my fault.” She twisted her lips into a crooked smile. “I should watch where I’m going. Can I help you?”

“I’m looking for a Hannah Kendricks.” He stared into her face. “I don’t suppose that would be you?”

Hannah stared up into the deepest, darkest eyes she’d ever seen. The man towered over her, his shoulders impossibly broad and his face ruggedly handsome. What had he asked? Oh, yeah. “I’m Hannah. And you are?”

The man held out his hand. “Alex Davila. My therapist told me I might see if you had room for one more patient here at the Brighter Days Rehab Ranch.”

Hannah’s heartbeat sped as she took the proffered hand. “Man or beast?” Holy smokes she couldn’t help staring at the beast in front of her and all of his sexy maleness.

His lips quirked upward. “Man.” He touched his chest. “Although, I’ve been called a beast by some of my friends. The patient would be me.”

The wind sucked out of her chest, Hannah felt as if her lungs had deflated to completely empty of all oxygen.

“You?” She ran her gaze over him from the top of his cowboy hat to his sexy new cowboy boots. “Actually, we do have room at the ranch.”

“Oh, good. When they turned me loose at Walter Reed, I wasn’t sure where I’d go next. I was getting close to pre-injury normal, but I didn’t want to backslide.” He gave her a smile. “Would you consider taking me on? I hear you have a good program here.”

“You have?” The fact that he would be one of the ranch’s clients made her feel both disappointed and relieved all at once.

As a client, he would be strictly off limits to her personally. Hannah had an ironclad rule for herself. Don’t get involved with the patients. Er…clients.

They needed to learn to function on their own. Falling for their therapist would only delay their re-entry into society. Shaking off the need to lick the man from head to toe, Hannah swallowed hard and took his hand. “Alex, you say?”

He nodded. “My friends call me Taz.”

“It wouldn’t happen to be short for Tasmanian Devil, would it?”

He grinned.

The action lit a fire at Hannah’s core.

“Guilty,” Taz said.

“Let me guess,” she said, her words tripping on her suddenly heavy tongue. “You’re the kind of person who spins into a situation, stirs it up and spins back out before anyone realizes what hit them?” Like he had her heart and her head spinning right then.

He shrugged. “Something like that.”

“What would you like us to call you? Alex, Davila or Taz?”

“Taz will do.” He stared down at her hand in his. “Do you mind if I have that back?”

Heat rushed up into her cheeks as she realized she’d been holding the client’s hand all the time they’d been discussing his name. Hannah yanked her hand out of his, suddenly missing the warmth and strength. Which was ridiculous. She didn’t need either. But knowing that didn’t stop her from wanting them…

Hannah squared her shoulders, determined to be professional amid her totally unprofessional thoughts. “Gavin will show you to the bunkhouse and get you settled in. But before you decide to stay, you should know, everyone who comes here is expected to pull his or her own weight in one form or another. Disabilities aren’t an excuse to get out of working. The animals we rescue count on us to make their lives better.”

Taz’s brows dipped. “I thought this was a rehab ranch for veterans.”

“And horses. We also rescue abused and mistreated horses. The veterans who come to us learn that they’re not the only living creatures with seemingly insurmountable problems. Our charges help each other heal.” She tipped her head in challenge. “Are you willing to do your share?”

He nodded. “I am.”

“Have you ever been around horses?” she asked.

Taz’s lips twitched. “A little.”

Hannah suspected he wasn’t telling the whole truth. However, she had work to do, and standing around drooling over a client wasn’t getting it done. “As I said, Gavin will show you to your quarters.” She left the tack room as quickly as she could without appearing bitchy or off-putting. Being near Taz was making her insides burn and her thoughts scramble.

“Hey! What the hell!” a voice shouted.

Hannah recognized it as Franklin’s.

“You got it on me first, you damned grunt,” Vasquez responded.

A snort sounded from the other side of a stall and something sailed into the air, landing with a plop on the ground at Hannah’s feet.

“Rather be a grunt than a jarhead,” Franklin shouted.

“Yeah, at least the shit is on the outside of my boots, not on the inside,” Vasquez said.

Two more clumps of straw-studded horse manure sailed out of the stall, landing on the ground near Hannah.

“What’s going on in there?” she shouted, anger building as yet another clump of manure flew out of the stall.

“He started it,” Franklin said, and grunted.

Hannah ran toward the stall, afraid the two young men would hurt each other with the hay rakes.

When she reached the stall gate, she stopped, her lips twitching, laughter bubbling up inside. Franklin and Vasquez were in a war of the rakes, balancing the two tools beneath their good arms, using their bodies to apply leverage. The rake tines were locked, and they were at a standoff.

Then Franklin backed off, dug his tines into the straw and manure and slung shit at Vasquez.

Vasquez ducked, and the horse manure hit Hannah in the chest. She let out a sharp breath and backed up a step.

The two fighters froze, their eyes rounding.

“Miss Kendricks, I’m so sorry.” Franklin ran toward her, still carrying his rake.

“It’s okay,” Hannah said, choking on her sudden need to giggle. She tried not to let it out. The situation was serious, but the guys covered in crap looked hysterically funny. She couldn’t hold back and let loose a bark of laughter.

“Attention!” a commanding voice said behind her. “Drop your tools.”

Both men quickly dropped their rakes and stood straight.

“It’s okay.” Hannah stopped laughing long enough to take a deep breath. When she did, she smelled the manure on her shirt and made a belated attempt to brush it off. Then, to make certain Franklin didn’t devolve into another brawl later, she schooled her face into a stern mask and faced them. “You do realize you’re cleaning up the mess you made?”

The two spoke as one, “Yes, ma’am!”

She tilted her chin a little higher. “And what did you learn today while slinging manure all over the barn?”

Their brows descended. “Ma’am?” Franklin questioned.

“Not to sling shit because it’s wrong?” Vasquez guessed.

“That, too.” Hannah let her lips curl into a smile as she gestured toward the vets. “More importantly, you learned you could manage a rake with one hand. And you did well enough to sling a considerable amount of manure all over the place. Now that you know you can do that, you can put your backs into cleaning up.”

“Yes, ma’am!” Franklin and Vasquez said as one. But they didn’t move. Their gazes shifted to the man who’d commanded them to attention.

“Get to it,” Taz said, his voice deep, strong and brooking no argument.

Franklin and Vasquez scrambled for the rakes. Each grabbed a handle on the wheelbarrow. Together they rolled it toward the middle of the barn and started shoveling manure.

Winter Blog Review

Lena Love is a diva to the max, with an alcohol problem. When she over does it this time, her agent arranges for her stunt double to pretend to be her while they get her into rehab.

Angel Carson was fine with doing stunts, but to play the part of Lena while they try to catch a stalker was a bit much. Not really having a choice she settles into the elaborate ranch set up.

John Wayne “Duke” Morrison’s first assignment for Brotherhood Protectors is bodyguard to Lena. After being party to her advances the previous night he definitely wasn’t looking forward to it. However he is a professional and could handle whatever Lena decides to throw at him. Something is off with her though and at first he can’t figure out what it is. Then she slips off to skinny dip in the pool, and he ends up saving her from the foreman’s unwanted advances.

This is a favorite scene.

“No offense, Miss Love, but shut up.”

He crossed the smooth, custom oak floors and mounted the stairs, carrying her all the way. He started out fast, but by the time they reached the top of the staircase, Duke was breathing hard, and his leg ached like a motherfucker.

With her arms crossed over her chest and an expression that said, I told you so, Lena stared at him. “Uncle?”

He gritted his teeth, dragged in a deep breath and then strode down the hall. At her bedroom, he kicked open the door, entered the huge room and dumped her ass on the king-sized bed.

“Hey! That wasn’t very nice.” She righted herself and pulled the comforter over her nakedness. “You, Mr. Morrison, are no gentleman.”

“And you, Miss Love, are no lady. Didn’t your mother teach you to wear a swimsuit when you go swimming out in the open?”

“It’s my place. I can walk around stark naked wherever the hell I please. Besides, a polite gentleman would have looked away.”

“Since we’ve already established that I’m no gentleman, it’s a moot point.” He strode to the windows, checked the locks, double-checked the bathroom and ducked to glance under her bed.

A slim, bare foot shot out hitting him in the shoulder, knocking him backward.

He grabbed the ankle attached to the foot as he went down, dragging her off the bed. They landed in a tangled heap on the sheepskin rug.

Lena tried to scramble out of reach.

Duke wasn’t having any of it. “Prepare to reap what you sew.” He flipped her onto her back on the rug, straddled her hips and pinned her wrists high above her head. Then he stared down at her flushed face.

“I don’t think pinning your client to the floor is in your job description.” She wiggled beneath him, igniting his desire for this mess of a woman.

“I’m guarding your body.” His gaze slipped lower. “And since you seem to enjoy strutting around in your birthday suit, I assume you have no problem with your bodyguard seeing you nude.” His glance slipped to the breasts he’d seen last night, flashed fully in his face. Only this time, there was something different. On her left breast, just below the nipple was a tattoo of a heart surrounded by two doves in flight.

He froze, studying the tattoo.

“Hey, you can quit staring now,” she said, her cheeks turning redder by the minute. She arched her back in an attempt to dislodge him.

Still holding her wrists with one of his hands, he pointed at the mark. “This tattoo, when did you get it?”

She stopped struggling. “When I was eighteen. The year my parents died.”

For a moment, her words hung in the air, as if they didn’t quite belong anywhere. Then it all came crashing down around Duke.

He glared down at her. “Who the hell are you?”

Her eyes widened as she stared up at him. “Wh-what do you mean? I’m Lena Love. Who else would I be?” Her gaze slipped to the corner of the room.

“The woman in the bar who flashed me last night was Lena Love. She didn’t have a tattoo on her breasts. You, however, do.”

She set her jaw in a tight line. “Get off of me.”

Duke shook his head. “Not until you tell me what the hell is going on.”

Winter Blog Review

It would take a lot of courage for Mia to do what she came to Eagle Rock to do. She’s going to write the screenplay based on the events that happened to her thirteen years ago. Unfortunately someone is already trying to scare her away.

This is a favorite scene where she meets Bear for the first time and Sadie and Hank find out the truth of why she came here to write.

With no one knocking on his door or offering him a job, Bear had begun to slip into a dark place he’d never gone before. The temptation to self-medicate with alcohol had been so real, he’d nearly succumbed.

Then he’d gotten the call. One rainy day in D.C., his phone rang. He hadn’t recognized the number, but he’d crossed his fingers and prayed it wasn’t a salesman.

The caller had been Hank Patterson, founder of the Brotherhood Protectors personal security agency. Based on Swede’s recommendation, he’d offered him a job to come to work in Montana providing personal security to clients.

Bear hadn’t hesitated. He’d packed his duffel bag and boarded a plane the next day.

Fortunately, he’d hit the ground running when Swede’s first assignment went code red and every member of the Brotherhood Protector had gone into combat mode to protect Swede’s client.

That had been a couple weeks ago. Since then, they hadn’t had a client contact them. Hank had warned Bear that they were a new startup company and they wouldn’t be advertising. All of their clients would come to them by word of mouth.

Well, word of mouth wasn’t bringing in droves of clients. If something didn’t come up soon, Bear would have to find alternate work.

Though Hank promised he could stay at White Oak Ranch until work picked up, Bear didn’t like living off the good will of others.

The pain in his leg had dissipated enough Bear was considering going back to bed when lights flashed between the trees, indicating a vehicle coming up the long drive to the ranch house.

His pulse quickened, and he debated waking Hank, but didn’t have time. At the speed the vehicle flew up the road, it would be at the house before Bear could climb the stairs to the second floor and wake the boss.

The car skidded to a stop in the gravel, but the driver didn’t get out right away.

With his heart racing, adrenaline pumping and, curiosity aroused, Bear waited for the driver to make the first move.

Finally, the driver’s door opened, and a woman leaped out. Petite, with dark hair hanging down past her shoulders and wearing a baggy T-shirt and cowboy boots, she ran toward the house.

When she jogged up the steps to the porch, Bear stepped in front of her, blocking her path.

The woman screamed, and would have fallen backward, if Bear hadn’t wrapped his arms around her waist and crushed her to his chest.

She struggled, kicked and cried out.

Bear held on, afraid she would trip and fall if he let go. “Hey, it’s okay. I’m not going to hurt you.”

Either she couldn’t hear him or was too frightened to listen. She didn’t stop fighting until the porch light blinked on.

Hank slammed through the door, his wife, Sadie, on his heels. “What’s going on?”

The woman in Bear’s arms slowed her fight and glanced up.

“I don’t know,” Bear said, his arms clamping the wildcat’s arms to her sides. “This woman showed up like her world was on fire and ran toward the house. I blocked her path, and she tried to tear me apart.”

Sadie stepped out from behind Hank. Her eyes widened. “Mia?”

Bear’s captive sagged against him, and her entire body trembled.

“Oh, my God, Mia.” Sadie rushed forward.

Bear loosened his hold, but not all the way. As limp as the woman Sadie had called Mia had gone, he wasn’t certain she could stand.

Sadie pulled her from his arms and hugged her.

“What happened?”

Mia buried her face against her friend’s chest, shook her head and continued to tremble.

“Bring her inside, Sadie,” Hank said, holding the door open.

Bear stepped away from the two women, feeling as if he’d kicked a puppy. “I’m sorry if I scared you.” He reached out to touch her shoulder.

Mia flinched and stepped sideways to avoid his touch.

“It’s okay,” Sadie soothed. “Let’s get you inside, and then you can tell us what happened.”

Bear was the last through the door. This Mia woman seemed pretty shaken by something, and he felt like he was part of the cause. The sooner he figured out what was going on, the better.

Sadie led Mia into the living room where she sat with her on the couch.

Bear stood at the entrance, not wanting to cause the lady any more distress. For some reason, she was afraid of him.

Sadie stroked Mia’s back and spoke soothingly to her, until Mia finally stopped shaking and straightened.

“I’m sorry,” she said, wiping the tears from her cheeks. “I didn’t come back to Eagle Rock to fall apart on your doorstep.”

“You know you’re welcome here, no matter what. And for the record, I wasn’t keen on you staying in your old house until you had it where you wanted it.” Sadie gave her a gentle smile. “Tell me what happened that scared you so badly.”

Mia glanced toward the darkened window and a tremor shook her body. “I was having a bad dream when something woke me.” She drew in a shaky breath and let it out. “I got up to check it out and went down the stairs. I found the back door to the kitchen wide open.”

Sadie’s brows dipped. “Could the wind have blown it open?”

Mia shook her head and looked at Sadie. “I locked all the doors and windows before I went to bed. Not only was the door open, the doorframe was splintered. Someone broke it open. And no, I’m not buying the ghost theory. Ghosts don’t break doorframes.”

Sadie’s frown deepened. “No. They don’t.” She pulled Mia into her arms. “I’m glad you came here. You can’t go back until you have the deadbolt fixed and a decent security system installed.”

Mia shook her head, her lips thinning into a straight line. “I have to go back. Whoever did this can’t get away with it. I refuse to let anyone scare me away from my family home. I’m tired of being the victim.”

Bear’s fists clenched into fists. The bullish frown on Mia’s face made him want to go after her demons as much as she wanted to.

Sadie gripped her friend’s arms. “What are you talking about?”

Mia’s chin lifted, even as tears filled her eyes again. She swiped at them with the back of her knuckles. “Did I tell you about the script I came to write?”

Sadie shook her head. “No.”

Drawing in a deep breath, Mia glanced around at the men in the room, as if in challenge. Then she turned to Sadie. “It’s about a woman who returns to her hometown thirteen years after she was brutally raped to find the man who did it to her.”

Sadie tilted her head to the side. A frown dug a line between her brows. “That’s a tough one to write.”

“Even tougher when it’s based on a true story.”

Sadie gasped. “Mia?”

The smaller woman nodded. “On my way home from school, thirteen years ago.”

Bear’s chest tightened. Mia couldn’t have been more than fifteen or sixteen at the time. What kind of animal would have done such a thing?

Sadie’s hand dropped to the swell of her belly. “Who?”

Mia shook her head. “I don’t know. He wore a ski mask. I never knew who did it.”
James, Elle. Montana D-Force (Brotherhood Protectors Book 3) (pp. 17-22). Twisted Page Inc.. Kindle Edition.

Hank is determined to figure out who the rapist was all those years ago and Mia has the revelation of what if she wasn’t the only victim back then or since.

Bear becomes her protection and a bond forms between them as they battle their respective demons.

A heartrending story, with love and support of friends, a new relationship and so many twists you won’t be able to put this books down.

I have rest of the books in this series and now I can’t stop reading it. On to book 4.

Set for medical discharge, Axel ‘Swede’ Svenson travels to Montana to join with Hank ‘Montana’ Patterson in his new endeavor. Providing security and bodyguard services is the name of the game for Brotherhood Protectors. Axel has also recommended someone he became close to in rehab, Bear. Although not a SEAL, he is Delta and this would be right up his alley too. Axel’s first assignment is to protect Allie Patterson, Hank’s sister. She is getting married and the groom has received threats to her safety.

Allie Patterson is a stubborn, much like her father and brother. She is determined to get married, nothing and no one is going to stop this wedding from happening. Not even the groom, who manages to disappear on business right after his barn burns to the ground.

Allie puts her bodyguard Swede through his paces the first day at the ranch and in spite of herself she feels more than a little attracted to him.

This is a favorite scene the second day on the Patterson Ranch.

Swede was glad the horse knew what to do. The work wasn’t hard. In fact, it had a certain rhythm that bred a sense of calm.

Georgia shouted from the house that Allie had a call from the caterer.

“This horse is about done. You can turn her out into the pasture and then bring out another horse. Just stay clear of Diablo, the black gelding in the last stall. He’s a work in progress, and he hasn’t quite got the hang of anything.”

“Who rides him?”

“No one, yet. Like I said, he’s a work in progress. In other words, he’s too wild to handle easily.” Allie waved at Georgia. “I have to go. No need to follow me. You can keep an eye on the house from the corral, and I really doubt anyone will attack me there.”

Swede nodded. She was right. He had a good view of the house and the road leading to it from the corral.
As Allie hurried inside, Swede couldn’t help but follow her progress. He told himself it was part of his job, but the truth was the way her hips swayed in her jeans was completely mesmerizing.

The horse he held on a lead tossed her head, pulling Swede back to the task at hand. He walked her through the gate into the pasture and unhooked the lead.

She pranced away and joined the other horses already grazing.

Glancing back at the house and drive, Swede returned to the barn and walked along the stalls, most of which were empty now. One mare stood placidly, watching him as he passed her and walked down the line of stalls to the end.

When they’d been cleaning, Allie had led Diablo Diablo in and out. She’d also taken charge of brushing him.

As Swede neared, the animal stuck his head over the top of the gate and nickered.

“So, you’re a real ball-buster, are you?” Swede spoke softly and reached out a hand to rub the gelding’s nose.

Diablo nuzzled his hand.

“Do you want out?”

The horse pawed at the dirt and tossed his head as if saying yes.

“How hard can it be to walk you around a corral?” Swede snapped the lead onto Diablo’s halter and opened the stall.

As soon as the latch was free, Diablo hit the door, knocking Swede backward. He staggered and held on tightly to the lunging rope, while being dragged out of the barn by the bolting horse.

When Swede got his feet under himself, he dug his heels into the dirt and slowed the horse.

Diablo reared and jerked the lead, but Swede held steady and started talking. Soon, the horse stopped fighting and settled on all fours.

Ruger stepped up beside Swede as if to show his support.

Diablo lowered his nose to the dog, and the four-legged creatures sniffed each other.

“You’re not so bad, just a little spirited.” He raised his hand slowly to stroke the horse’s nose. “See? I’m not here to hurt you.” The gelding tossed his head as if to disagree. “Ruger wouldn’t be beside me now if I hurt him. He trusts me because he gave me a chance. I gave him one, too.” Swede continued to talk to the horse as he led him into the corral and closed the gate behind him. Still holding the lead close to Diablo’s halter, Swede walked the horse around the outer circle. He kept a running monologue going, to calm the animal.

Ruger stood outside the pen. Every time they passed the dog, the horse looked his way.

After walking around the pen for five minutes, getting the gelding used to the environment, Swede picked up the pace and settled into a slow and steady jog.

Diablo matched his pace and trotted alongside Swede. Slowly, Swede lengthened the lead, still running with the horse, but putting more distance between them. Whenever Diablo slowed, Swede clicked his tongue and jogged faster, encouraging the horse to keep moving. When the lead was long enough and Swede was standing in the middle of the corral, the horse slowed. Swede clicked his tongue, and Diablo broke into a trot.

After several more circles around the corral, Swede let Diablo come to a stop. He pulled in the lead until he could rub the horse’s nose. “You’re a good boy,” Swede soothed, running his hand across the horse’s nose and up to scratch his ears. Then he swept his hand along the gelding’s neck to his back.

Diablo pawed the earth and whinnied, swaying on his hooves.

Swede scratched the animal’s back, side and around to his belly. He moved his hands up to the horse’s back again and laid his arms over the top, scratching the other side, while leaning his weight on the animal.

Diablo tossed his head, but didn’t move away.

Holding onto the lead rope, Swede grabbed hold of a handful of Diablo’s mane and swung his leg over the top of the horse. He leaned forward and wrapped his arms around Diablo’s neck, speaking to him the entire time, fully expecting to be thrown, but hoping it wouldn’t happen.

Diablo backed up and then moved forward, whinnying.

Ruger whined behind the rails of the corral, capturing the gelding’s attention.

Diablo trotted to where the dog stood and lowered his head to sniff.

Swede molded his body to the horse, still rubbing his neck and speaking softly.

Seeing Diablo and Ruger greeting each other with their noses, Swede slipped off the horse’s back and patted his neck. “See? It’s not as bad as you think.”

When Swede straightened, he noticed he had an audience. “Damnedest thing I’ve ever seen.” Eddy leaned against a corral panel, his arms resting on the top rail.

“That horse doesn’t like anyone,” Lloyd Patterson said, scratching his head.

“And to beat it all, Swede never rode a horse until yesterday.” Allie joined the two men at the fence, a smile tilting the corners of her lips.

“You’re lucky he didn’t take you for a ride.”

Swede rubbed Diablo’s neck. “I think he just needed a friend.” He tipped his head toward Ruger. Diablo and Ruger sniffed at each other. Ruger’s tail thumped the ground.

“The man we bought him from said he had another gelding raised with Diablo,” Mr. Patterson said.

“You might want to check and see if he still has him,” Allie said. “Seems Diablo needs a friend.”

“Why? Swede’s dog seems to be doing the job,” Eddy said.

“And why feed another horse?” her father added. “It’s cheaper to feed a dog.”

Allie’s smile slipped. “Swede and Ruger are only here until after the wedding.” She opened the gate.
James, Elle. Bride Protector SEAL (Brotherhood Protectors Book 2) (pp. 51-56). Twisted Page Inc. Kindle Edition.

The more time Allie spends with Swede the more she questions her motives for marrying Damien. She is also determined to go through with the wedding. No matter what anyone says.

Swede needs to protect Allie from the escalating attempts on her life and at the same time keep himself from falling deeper for this tempestuous female.

A roller coaster ride of excitement, lust and emotions as they figure out who is after Allie, and bring him to justice.

Winter Blog Review

I love this series and I have no idea why I haven’t reviewed it. So now I am re-reading and getting the reviews out there. Hopefully before the new book in January.

In this first book Hank Patterson has some decisions to make. He’s been injured and there is the possibility of medical discharge. The question is what will he do as a civilian? He doesn’t get along well enough with his father to go back to the ranch.

Sadie McClain is a Hollywood star with a stalker and a pain for an agent. She’s come home to escape from the turmoil her life has become. Only she finds her home radically changed by her sister-in-law. So much so she’s uncomfortable but not willing to return to LA.

When someone takes pot shots at her, Hank’s father Lloyd is injured it’s at the hospital she has her first encounter with Hank since she turned down his proposal.

This is a favorite scene.

Allie hooked her arm through Hank and Sadie’s and herded them through the door. “Sadie, tell Hank what happened while I try to talk sense into Daddy.” She pushed them into the corridor, and let the door swing closed behind them.

Relatively alone with Sadie in the corridor, Hank stared down at her. She’d broken his heart when she’d told him she didn’t want to get married, and that she wanted to pursue her dream of going to California to become a big movie star.

“Hi, again.”

She chuckled softly. “Your father is still the same.”

“If by the same, you mean cantankerous, ornery and pig-headed, you’re right.” Out of habit, his hand rose to touch her, to bring her into his arms and kiss her, but he stopped himself before his fingers made the connection. They weren’t teenagers in love anymore. She was a celebrity. He was a SEAL. By the nature of their chosen occupations, their worlds would never collide.

Except in Eagle Rock where they’d both been raised. In Hank’s case, he’d never wanted to come back. Had he known Sadie would be there…“How long have you been in town?” he asked.

“Five days.”

“I thought you lived in LA.”

“I do—did.” She stared down at her cowboy boots. “It’s complicated.”

Hank nodded. Complicated probably meant it was personal, and she didn’t want to share her reasons for coming home with him. There was nothing between them but a few old memories. Even if those memories were carved into his mind and had been what kept him going during his darkest days, whether in battle or in recovery from injuries.

“You look good,” Sadie said, a strained smile turning her lips upward on the corners.

“You look too thin,” he said, his tone flat, a frown pinching his forehead.

She’d lost the rounded corners of baby fat, her cheekbones and arms were more angular, toned and beautiful in a more mature, upscale fashion. This woman was now Hollywood royalty. She’d walked the red carpet with people way out of Hank’s league, gone to private parties with some of the most elegant and famous people of their time. She’d even had dinner with the president of the United States.

Hell, Hank worked for the president, yet he’d never actually met the man in person.

Sadie’s lips formed a crooked smile that had the added effect of turning his insides to mush. “I can always trust you to give it to me straight. No sugarcoated platitudes. Just the ugly truth.”

Hank shook his head and made the mistake of gripping her arm. Now there was no going back. Ever since he’d seen her in his father’s hospital room, he’d wanted to yank her up against him and kiss away all the years they’d wasted apart. As his fingers curled around her arms, he slowly, inexorably drew her toward him. “What I meant to say is you look incredible.” He brushed a strand of hair behind her ear like he used to do after horseback riding across the prairie grasses.

Her eyes widened and she tipped back her head. “It’s so very good to see you again, Hank,” she said, her voice breathy. Her tongue darted out to moisten her lips. “You look pretty good yourself.”

God, he wanted to kiss her.
James, Elle. Montana SEAL (Brotherhood Protectors Book 1) (pp. 38-40). Kindle Edition.

In spite of the insane attraction between them, the fact remains someone shot at her and injured his father. Hank agrees to be her bodyguard, even as he pursues her.

A tense, emotional, suspenseful tale as Sadie and Hank renew their relationship and hunt the person responsible for all the almost fatal incidents around her.

Kindle Worlds is Closing! Here are some of my favorite worlds and Authors within them!

Kindle Worlds will be gone forever
July 16th 2018!

This deeply saddens me, I have found many new to me authors by seeing them in these worlds.

It was always a place to find quick, inexpensive reads that blended with another author’s characters and settings.

I have heard that some of the World owners are going to continue them on their own and some will need to have an acknowledgement of the originating series before republishing. Yet others may go away completely. For some worlds no decisions have made as to their fate, as this news just broke.

This is a response to a reader friend from Amazon:

For five years, Kindle Worlds has been thriving, engaging writers and readers who enjoy writing in one another’s worlds, and we’re proud of the work we’ve done together. While we are closing Kindle Worlds, Amazon is constantly innovating on behalf of our authors and readers, and we look forward to continuing to do so.

As of May 17th, Kindle Worlds will no longer be accepting new submissions. Previously published Kindle Worlds stories will no longer be available for sale on Amazon.com on or around July 16th. The Kindle Worlds website will be closed on August 29th.

Rest assured previously purchased or borrowed Kindle Worlds stories will remain unaffected.

With that in mind and since the time is short until they are gone, I wanted to share with you some of my favorite Worlds and Authors from them. I hope you will take the time to browse through these links and possibly enjoy them as much as I have.

I put the link I have for the main world and then covers that link to Amazon for individual authors within those worlds that I have read and enjoyed.

I would also like to thank the owners of the worlds that so many wonderful authors wanted to play in, Elle James, Susan Stoker, Paige Tyler, Desiree Holt, Sable Hunter, Millie Taiden, Carly Phillips, Robyn Peterman, Cat Johnson, Eliza Gayle, Erin Nicholas, and Roxanne St.Claire.

No one taught him how to disarm his heart…

Clayton “Brick” Wall specialized in explosive ordinance removal, but a near miss, which almost cost his team their lives, left his nerves shot and his spirit a little broken. Even with his trusted buddy Hondo at his side, medical discharge feels like just another test he didn’t study for—what the hell is civilian life anyway? A friend sends him to Montana to heal and the Brotherhood Protectors give him a place, and a purpose.

No one taught her to stay over the safety net…

Ex-CIA asset, Wanda Aiken is working overtime to keep her grandfather’s Merry Circus afloat. Coming back had never been a part of the plan, but she’s burnt on operations and family is family. When a series of accidents threaten to sideline the whole operation, she’s torn between going old school, and throwing in the towel.

No one taught them how to not go it alone…

Sent to protect Wanda, Brick’s not prepared for the stubborn, infuriating woman determined to do it her way. All he needs is one foot to get in the center ring. Fortunately Hondo has four paws and Wanda’s charmed by him.

KindleLogo

Once again Heather takes us on a journey of suspense and love with plenty of chuckles as well.

I couldn’t help but giggle at the name Clayton ‘Brick’ Wall, such are the nicknames given by buddies in the military. However my true love in this one is his bomb sniffing dog Hondo. Hondo and Brick were partners in the military and Brick was fortunate to be able to adopt him as they both left it under medical discharge.

As a child I always loved the aerial performers at the circus, so as we learn about Wanda and she takes to the high wire I can visualize every move she makes. Having returned from years in Europe, she is in charge of this tour of the Merry Circus. A small traveling extension of her family’s main event in Vegas.

This is a favorite scene with Brick, Hondo and Wanda as Brick tries to learn more about her.

“You know an awful lot about this.” She dragged her gaze off the dark and looked around Hondo. The dashboard lights only partially illuminated his face. The shepherd gave her a kiss on the cheek, a light swipe. Running her fingers through his fur, she gave the dog a scratch just above his collar.

“I’ve been doing some research,” Clayton admitted. “Hank and his guys began to deep dive everyone’s backgrounds.”

Of course they had.

“Including yours.”

Sensing a reckoning, she waited.

“I also asked a friend to pull your records. You’ve got a scrubbed background check, a very thorough and squeaky-clean one. So which did you work for?”

“The circus.” It wasn’t a lie. She’d worked for several of them.

“Wanda,” Clayton’s voice dipped low and a shiver rolled across the surface of her skin. “Is it possible they didn’t scrub you as thorough as it looks? Could someone from a life you didn’t lead in a job you didn’t do for an alphabet agency you won’t admit, be gunning for you?”

Laughter spilled out of her at the absurdity of the question, and she shook her head. “If anyone from a mythical life that didn’t happen on a continent where I worked for the circus, and didn’t do any side jobs for anything resembling an alphabet agency were to come looking—I’d guess they’d be a lot more direct than bloody threats on a trailer door and a fire to drive me out of my trailer.”

Summer Blurb

Cooper Nelson’s SEAL career was cut drastically short when an explosion left him almost completely deaf. With so much of his pride and self-worth tied to the profession he loved above all else, Coop struggles in his nearly silent new world, his future seemingly bleak…until Commander Hurt badgers him into volunteering at the Riverton School for the Deaf. There, he meets teacher Kiera Hamilton, who opens his eyes—and his heart—to a love more fulfilling than any job could be.

Ten years his senior, Kiera can’t believe Coop would ever be interested in anything long term, but he patiently proves her wrong. And she’s not the only one enamored with the sexy former-SEAL—her impressionable first-grade students are enthralled with the man, especially Frankie. The troubled young boy flourishes with each of Cooper’s visits, which only makes Kiera fall harder.

As he learns ASL, connects with the students, and gets closer to Kiera, Coop’s happier than he’s ever been…until an attempted abduction at the school threatens to take away everything that makes his new life worth living.

Summer My Review

Cooper like all the SEALs has been devoted to protecting his country. Forced to retire when an explosion takes out his hearing he is struggling. At first he isn’t happy to volunteer at the School for the Deaf, but that quickly changes. He meets Kiera a first grade teacher, and his interest is peaked in a romantic way.

This is one of my favorite scenes when Cooper visits Kiera’s classroom for the first time.

Just when Kiera was about to tell the children to get back to work, a little boy sitting in the back of the classroom slowly raised his hand. She hid her surprise. Frankie was small for his age and wasn’t making much progress. He was very reluctant to sign and hadn’t made any friends in the class since he’d been there. He frequently resorted to pushing the kids in his class when he couldn’t understand them or when he wanted his way.

Kiera knew his attitude was a result of his tumultuous home life and starting in a new school and her heart hurt for him. Frankie’s father was excited about the chance for his son to be in the special school. They’d moved down to Riverton from Los Angeles for a fresh start after a contentious divorce. His ex-wife was a drug addict who was deemed unfit to have custody of their son. Until recently, she’d been allowed to have supervised visitations with Frankie, but after slipping away from the court-ordered supervisor and taking Frankie to the mall to a drug drop, she’d had all parental rights stripped from her.

Kiera understood that the little boy was probably having issues dealing with all the upheaval in his life, but it had been two months since he’d started school and he wasn’t getting any better. The fact that he’d engaged enough to raise his hand and ask a question was almost a miracle at this point.

She pointed at the skinny boy and signed, “Yes, Frankie?”

He mostly used the alphabet to spell out his question, but it was understandable, if not painful to wait for him to get through.

Kiera swallowed and flicked her eyes to Cooper before repeating the question for the rest of the class. “Frankie asked what his tough military friends thought of Cooper using his hands to speak in such a sissy way.”

A few of the kids gasped and whipped their heads around to gaze at Frankie with wide eyes. Kiera hadn’t realized that was what Frankie thought of sign language. It was as heartbreaking as it was shocking.

Bless Cooper, he didn’t even blink at the question. He got up and went over to where Frankie was sitting. When he got there, he sat on his butt and awkwardly crossed his legs. Then he proceeded to blow Kiera’s mind.

He used mostly finger spelling, as Frankie had, and not once did he look to Kiera for a sign. “My friends are jealous that I have my own secret language. Believe it or not, Frankie, my team had our own hand signals for stuff. This,” he made a movement with his hands that Kiera didn’t recognize, “meant danger. And this,” he did it again, making another sign that clearly wasn’t American Sign Language, “meant bad guy ahead. I don’t know who told you that sign language was sissy, but it absolutely isn’t. It’s cool. The coolest thing I’ve ever tried to learn. I can talk to you, your classmates, or Ms. Hamilton, and people who aren’t deaf can’t understand me. It’s like being an undercover spy right under people’s noses. I love knowing a secret language, even if I’m not very good at it yet.”

If Kiera hadn’t been watching Frankie carefully, she would’ve missed it, but his eyes got big and she could literally see the knowledge that a big, strong man like Cooper thought sign language was cool sinking into his psyche.

She’d tried for months to get Frankie to show an ounce of interest in anything she did or said, to no avail. But with one painstakingly finger-spelled answer, Cooper had somehow bonded with the young boy in a way she’d rarely seen before.
Swallowing hard so she wouldn’t burst into tears, Kiera waved her hand in the air to get the children’s attention. She sighed, “Now that we have all met Cooper, time to get back to your lessons.”

The kids all nodded and shuffled back to various places around the room with their tablets. There were beanbags strewn around the classroom, as well as small couches, and big fluffy rugs… more than enough choices for the children to settle in comfortably somewhere.

She looked over at Frankie and Cooper and caught the tail end of Cooper’s question to the little boy. “…me sit with you while you read?”

Frankie nodded his head and Kiera watched in awe as Cooper and her troublemaker student shifted so they were sitting facing each other, knees touching, with the tablet off to their right. Frankie reached out and turned it on, activating the story he’d been reading before the interruption.
Stoker, Susan. Brotherhood Protectors: Protecting Kiera (Kindle Worlds Novella) (SEAL of Protection Book 10) (Kindle Locations 485-521). Kindle Worlds. Kindle Edition.

While Kiera had struggled not to cry I didn’t have the same luck. Get your tissues you’re going to need them. Now none of these SEALS have had an easy time with love and Coop’s no different. Hold onto your kindle and get swept away into this story.

Once again Susan has hit on problems in today’s world and done it with finesse and tact.

Summer My Review

Isaac Snow is on his first assignment for Guardian Security. Arriving early in Big Sky he took advantage of the time to do some skiing and visit with friends Hank and Axel. Hank had offered him a job at Brotherhood Protectors, but he really doesn’t want to return to Montana and Guardian is a perfect fit for him.

He has many surprises in store for him when he meets the woman whom he believes to be the pampered daughter of physicians. As he tests her abilities he finds himself more than a little impressed by Hannah Kader. As they get to know each other he finds himself attracted to her and she to him. The struggle to keep everything professional with visual and audio surveillance all over the house is frustrating for them both.

A calm and secure stay is not to be as they are forced from the supposed secure home by ISIS attackers.

A favorite scene is at the end of that altercation.

“I’ve got this,” Hannah said as she shoved him toward the other side. “You just be prepared to shoot if they decide to follow us.” She flung open the front door and threw her bag on the center console then jogged to the back, clumsily shucking off her backpack. Skis, that were as long as her body, made handling the heavy backpack awkward. Isaac didn’t have near as much problem, and shoved hers in on top of his before quietly closing the hatch. No need to advertise their location.

“Where are those tangoes?” Isaac asked in a low, quiet voice.

“They’re spreading out. Closest one is 1,500 feet. He’s tracking you down the trees.” Thankful Guardian Security had his back, Isaac was even more grateful for Alex’s connections at the highest levels. At that moment, they had their own satellite.

As he slid onto the other seat, Hannah was jamming the key into the ignition. “I’ve been told they train SEALs to steady a shot while standing on a boat in the middle of a rolling ocean. I hope you can apply those skills to a moving car.” She opened the roof.

“Brings all new meaning to riding shotgun,” Isaac said as he dug his M4 out of his duffel before shoving it into the back seat.

Thus begins a race to safety and the revelation of why ISIS wants Hannah so badly.

Action packed and steamy this is a story you won’t be able to put down.

Thirty years in PR taught her fact can be stranger than fiction, but leaves it up to the reader to separate truth from imagination. Happy New Year 2017!

2017-happy-new-year-fireworks-carolkittiereviewsfinal

As we enter this New Year, I want to thank all the Authors, Publishers and Publicity Groups that have contributed to my blog in 2016. Not only in ARCs but also in recommendations of new authors.

I look forward to reading and reviewing many new books this year. Some by new authors and others by authors I have come to love.

Each new book I read is a journey to a new adventure, a new love and new experiences for the heroes and heroines.

Thank You All For Your Love and Support!
Much Love,
Carol LaGatta
