Fall Tree Blog - Blurb

Capricorn Slate Claybourne, an ex-Seal and former sniper who has seen and done things in country that no man should endure, returns to his bucolic hometown on Pieberry Island, desperate for the mundane, everyday routines he once wanted to escape. A broken, soul-dead man unable to be around people, his body still a lethal weapon when his night terrors wake him from sleep, Slate’s failed to keep the promise he made to the commander who died in his arms: to look after the older man’s baby girl.

But animated Aries Holly Harper is not the pigtailed tot Slate expected her to be, when she lands on the island to take over the decrepit Pieberry House, determined to turn it into an inn for summer tourists, and even more determined to yank Slate back into the land of the living.

First she crashes into him at the island’s holiday Winter Festival, dumping a towering stack of pies at his feet, then she drags him off to a fortune teller against his better judgment. Except for the sizzling attraction smoldering between them, they’re incompatible in every way.

But when a furious December nor’easter traps them together at Pieberry House, will Slate and Holly overcome their pasts and discover they are two halves of a whole?

Fall Tree Blog - sm - My review

Suffering from PTSD our Capricorn, former Navy Seal Slate, has more or less settled in at home. Living in a Lighthouse, lobstering and occasionally captaining the ferry he avoids socializing as much as he can. Much preferring the solitude to anyone knowing about his issues. He is also in an offhanded way keeping a promise to his late friend and commander by watching his daughter from afar.

His Commander’s daughter Holly tracked him down because a letter from her father is to be opened with him. She fell in love with the island and purchased a dilapidated mansion with hopes of renovating into an Inn. She hadn’t approached him but fate has a way of making things happen.

A bouncy determined Aries, Holly is determined to make this man smile and laugh again. The excerpt below is their meeting and one of my favorite scenes in the book.

He on the other hand wants to keep his distance, certain his friend didn’t mean seducing his daughter as a way of taking care of her.

This is a fun read with lots of snark, quirky quotes and stubborn denial. It does have some scary points that can hit home for some. Be prepared to laugh and cry. This book will make you do both.

Fall Tree Blog - sm - excerpt

“I like the tousled look on you,” she confided.

“Jesus. You really have no boundaries, do you?” He raked her with a glare and rested the cartons on the hood of a nearby car, then brushed a hand through his disheveled hair. His attempt to restore some semblance of order failed miserably when a wayward lock flopped over his forehead. Growling, he flipped the stray curl away with an irritated gesture.

“I think not,” she responded. “I’m never going to have them where you’re concerned.”

“We’ve just met, Holly.”

“But I don’t feel like we’re strangers, really. Didn’t my dad ever mention me? He talked about you. Besides, I’m an Aries. Get used to it.”

With his now-straggled hair and a puzzled air reorganizing his features, he appeared almost boyish, or might have, if it hadn’t been for the wave of pure, unadulterated lust smacking her like a two-by-four every time she gazed at him.

“You have no idea what Aries is, do you?”

“It’s a constellation. I’m a sailor.”

“It’s also a zodiac sign. You know, like in horoscopes? And it’s not actually aligned with the constellation anymore because of the way the equinoxes have caused a shift.”

His eyes glazed over a little.

“Aries are impulsive, impetuous, impatient, and daring,” she nattered on, surprised at her breathlessness, but not her need to babble. “I’m guessing that’s everything you’re not.”

He frowned. “I can be impatient,” he said, as if that was a good thing. The look he shot her indicated his nerves might, in fact, be wearing a little thin at the present moment.

“And I suspect, given your last employment, daring, too.”

“Maybe that,” he conceded. “Not by inclination or choice.” He shrugged. “Anyway, I’m a lobsterman now. And I run the ferry when needed.”

“But still mainly serious, driven, hard-working, and wise, fiercely loyal, tough, and unapproachable on the outside but with a soft, warm, and squishy nougat center. I have you pegged for a total Capricorn. I bet you’re a secret romantic at heart, although you never show the world that side. When’s your birthday?”

“Do we have to play this idiotic game?”

“We do. And it’s not idiotic. You’d be surprised how telling astrology can be. Was I wrong about you?”

“Well…” He paused, and the silence between them lengthened.

“I’ll take that as a no.” She grinned at him.

“All right.” Again he said nothing more, and she wanted to shake him until a confession fell out of his mouth.

“Chatty, too.” She tapped her foot and crossed her arms over her chest, drawing his gaze to her breasts. But he still didn’t take the hint. She groaned. Such a man. “Eyes up, sailor.” She flicked a finger in the vicinity of his chin until he raised his focus. “Birthday?” she demanded again.

“In a couple of weeks,” he said at last, the admission apparently so difficult it might have been wrung from him on pain of torture.

She snapped her fingers. “Knew it. Do I have you sussed or not?”

“Do you?”

“I mean, we’re completely incompatible. Like oil and water. The tortoise and the hare.”

He shot her another incendiary look, and then glanced at the exit as if contemplating how fast he could make his getaway.

“Oh, wait. So I ruffled your feathers a little, and you’re not going to help me now?”

Instead of replying, he seized her fiercely by the arm and spun her around, dragging her into him until he’d caught her up against his rock-hard chest. Then his mouth came down on hers, hard, harsh, and demanding. Giving absolutely no quarter. Shocking her into utter and complete silence.

Whoa! I thought this man lacked spontaneity? Holy simmering cinnamon buns!

Fall Tree Blog - Blurb

There’s nothing worse for a writer than missing a deadline. For Griffin Montgomery, his failure to do what he loves comes at a blow. He didn’t understand how it was affecting his life until his well-meaning family intercedes. His sisters have hired him a new personal assistant and he’s outraged—that is, until he sees who it is.

Autumn Minor is light on her feet and a bare memory for most people she meets. She does her best to blend in everywhere she lives, even if it’s only for a short period of time. Making sure no one truly notices her is the only way she’s survived this long. Only when she meets Griffin and the rest of the Montgomery’s, she’s afraid she won’t be able to let go when its time to run.

Though the two begin a tentative but explosive relationship, they know it can’t last forever. Neither of them are made for the long haul when it comes to love and romance. When the demons from Autumn’s past find her and put both their lives at risk, Griffin will stop at nothing to protect her. In the end, though, he’ll be the one who needs a second chance

Fall Tree Blog - sm - My review

This book was a gift in exchange for an honest review.

I love this series and in this book we get a look at everyone and more. By more I mean hints at the books that are coming.

While this is about Griffin and Autumn, we learn a bit more about Jake, Maya’s friend. We are introduced briefly to Holly , Jakes girlfriend and Border Jake’s one time lover/friend? There is more of Sloane’s growly protectiveness of Hailey. Baby announcements, can you guess who? An update on Alex in rehab. News on Dad’s cancer. So much new information that makes me ache for the next book.

The Montgomery’s are known for taking care of their own. When Griffin gets behind on his deadline due to a rather intense case of writer’s block, his Mom, along with his sisters lovingly called the M & M’s (Meghan, Maya and Miranda), step in with a solution. One he is given no choice but to accept.

The beautiful and mysterious Autumn will become his personal assistant.  Hired by the women in his life, he can’t fire her, as he has with others in the past. She will organize everything around him so he can concentrate on the important things, writing.

We met Autumn at the end of Megan and Luc’s book Harder Than Words. An interesting young lady who never gets attached to any one place. Now we will find out why she runs. Will she continue to, now that she has found something she never expected?

I usually put up a passage but this from Griffin’s head really touched me.

He didn’t know why that hurt, but he pushed it aside like he had all the other times words had hurt. Words were far more powerful than most believed. That’s why he wrote them.

From the messy house to organization, this book held me in it’s tight clutches to the very end. Some inventive hot sexy scenes and so much more. Laughing and crying and just plain more please.

I can’t wait for the next in this series.

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan never thought she’d be a writer. Not really. No, she loved math and science and even went on to graduate school in chemistry. Yes, she read as a kid and devoured teen fiction and Harry Potter, but it wasn’t until someone handed her a romance book in her late teens that she realized that there was something out there just for her. When another author suggested she use the voices in her head for good and not evil, The Redwood Pack and all her other stories were born.Carrie Ann is a bestselling author of over twenty novels and novellas and has so much more on her mind (and on her spreadsheets *grins*) that she isn’t planning on giving up her dream anytime soon.

Forever Ink
Montgomery Ink 1.5
by NYT Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan

The idea of a May-December romance has never looked so hot when it comes to broody lawyer, Morgan and sizzling tattoo artist, Callie. Between conniving family members, blondes with too much time on their hands, and their own misgivings, trust in the bedroom and out of it won’t come easy.

My Review:

This is definitely a favorite in this series. Callie is Austin Montgomery’s apprentice at Montgomery Ink and in the beginning of this book is one of my favorite scenes.

“You’re ready for your own space, hon,” Austin said softly. “You’ve been ready for awhile, but Maya and I wanted to be sure the shop was ready too. Since Tommy moved away when his wife got stationed in Texas last week, we’ve opened up a space. So it’s yours. We’ll talk business and what it all means when Maya gets back, but welcome to the family. You’re one of us.”

Callie threw her arms around Austin’s neck, crying softly. “Oh thank you so much. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Austin patted her back and set her down. “You’re good at what you do. So go work on the star for that girl over there and then we can work with Morgan together.”

She nodded, a bit dazed, then kissed Austin on the cheek. “Thank you.”

“Putting moves on my man?” Sierra teased as she walked in.

Callie blushed then stepped back from Austin. “He just told me I get my own station, so I was just saying thanks. He’s all yours.”

Sierra beamed and hugged her tight. Callie closed her eyes, letting her family in everything but blood celebrate with her. “I’m so proud of you.” She looked over at Austin. “Maya’s going to be pissed you didn’t wait for her.”

Austin shrugged. “Whatever. I want Callie to work with Morgan and Maya isn’t here. She’ll get over it.”

Callie winced. “I so don’t want to be here when you’re telling her that.”

Thus starts a rollercoaster of a romance with as many ups as downs, tears and laughter and misunderstandings as a person can take.  Morgan has to convince the people around him of what he really wants in life and Callie has to decide if she can handle it all.

Their romance tends to be so hot you need a cold shower to keep reading, then almost frigid with misunderstandings.

I love the way all the novellas and books in this series just flow into one another while remaining standalones. We see the same characters so we watch them grow as they contribute to the current story. Then new ones are introduced giving a peek into the next.

Takedown
A Tapped Out Bonus Novella
by USA Today Bestselling Author
Cari Quinn
After honorably discharged Navy SEAL Liam Walsh discovers his estranged brother, Slater, is living platonically with Abby, the only woman Liam ever loved, he vows to remind her of their scorching history. But Abby has changed since Liam left, and he only has one long weekend to stake his claim…

My Review:

This is one messed up relationship. Liam left Abby and his family when he entered SEAL training. He hasn’t contacted any of them since. Now he is home and he thinks he may be a better person or, at the very least, different.

Liam jumps to a lot of conclusions from the moment Abby opens the door to his brother Slater’s apartment.  He puts his foot in his mouth several times and still the lust between them takes over. After another round of foot in mouth with his brother, about his involvement with MMA and Abby, he walks out, again. Not saying anything he planned on.

He finds himself at the Cage the gym Slater’s best friend Fox owns.  There he finds his sister Jenna working, and he gets to say some of what he wanted to with Slater. This is one of my favorite scenes.

“Don’t leave like that again. Promise me.”

“I promise, nugget.” I brushed her hair out of her face as she eased back. “I’m not going anywhere for a good long while if I can help it.”

Her eyes narrowed. They were so like our mother’s, large and expressive, always showing exactly what she was feeling. Now she was cautiously optimistic…and confused. “Why? I mean, it’s awesome, and I’m so glad you’re here.” She squeezed me in another quick hug. “But, I mean, are you based here? Is there even a base? What’s going on?”

I laughed. Somehow I’d forgotten what a chatterbox my little sis could be. A great thing to be reminded of when you didn’t want to talk about yourself. Soon enough I’d steer the conversation back to her. Until then, I had to answer her questions as honestly as possible.

“I’m medically retired.” As soon as I said the words, I had to clear my throat. I hadn’t had to say them much out loud yet, and the grit in my throat that accompanied them was harder to swallow than I expected. Years of my life and my foreseeable future were gone, just like that. “I will probably go back and help train SEALs at some point, but that’s up to me. Right now, I want to be here with you and your brother and—” I broke off, unable to finish.

“And Abby,” she said gently, reaching for my hand again.

Saying nothing, I nodded.

With the help of his brother Slater’s best friend Fox,  and his sister Jenna, he finally looks at himself inside and out.

This book is very emotional, heart-rending secrets untold until now and fiery, hot sex.

Bound Memories
A Bayou Bound Novella
by Sidney Bristol
Kit Carson is back in his home town to do more than promote his latest reality TV win on Tattoo King. He’s returned to win over the woman who kinked up his world, but Renee LeBlanc isn’t the girl he remembers. Ten years can go in a blink of an eye and he won’t let her walk away from him again.

My Review:

When Kit walks back into Renee’s life, she isn’t sure she wants anything to do with him.  He left her and Peaches (her cat) ten years ago and the struggle to be a female tattoo artist in a male dominated field was just too much. She quit to do something that would pay the bills.

Kit has returned the reigning Tattoo King. He is hoping that Renee will come with him when he leaves to do the convention tours.

Renee, has settled in with a good job, friends but no tattooing. When she and Kit discover he knew the victim of the cold case his uncle is still trying to solve, in spite of being retired and in hospice care, things get very interesting.

This novella has something for everyone. Hot sex, a cold case mystery, a dying relative and two people that have to overcome the hurt of the past.

Fall Tree Blog - sm - My review

This is a story of devotion and survival. When they first met Robbie and Gray took this vow together, “I solemnly promise to be family, to protect and hunt with you, forever devoted.”

Thus begins a friendship for the ages. Although their group got larger as they got older, they were always the closest.

While out with Gray drowning her sorrows over yet another break-up, Robbie makes a choice that will change their lives forever. With her judgement clouded by alcohol, she waves off Gray’s warning and offer of a cab and leaves the bar with Jason who is too intoxicated to drive. Then the truck rolls over.

Gray never leaves her side at the hospital waiting for her to wake from the coma. Then when she is able to be released takes her to his home and continues with her care as she recovers as much as she can from a brain injury.

Talk about frustrations, neither of these two seem to get it.

Hard-headed and stubborn Robbie doesn’t seem to understand that the only reason Gray isn’t jumping her bones is that she needs to recover. Then Gray doesn’t get that she needs her independence as she gets better.

I laughed and cried throughout this book. Very emotional.

SummerBlog Blurb and  SummerBlog My Review

This book was a gift from the publisher for a fair and honest review.
Of these six authors there is only one that is new to me, Marie Harte and now she is a favorite too. All the others are favorites and I must read everything I can by them.

THE HUNTED HEART
(A Redwood Pack Novella)
by NYT and USA Today Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan

Emeline might have been alive hundreds of years, but she’s never really lived.

Noah has known Emeline was his mate since he first saw her, only he doesn’t know if she feels the same. When he finally takes that final step, he’ll have to pray she finds the connection and overcomes the past she thought she’d lost years ago.

My Review:

Emeline is an elder of the Redwood pack.  A scholar who is searching a library of books to find a cure for the pack Doctor North’s blindness.

Noah is a young wolf, who has taken over North’s duties, and is helping Emeline with her research.  He also knows she is his mate, the problem is getting her to realize it.

My favorite quote in this book is when Lexi and Bay are helping Emeline prepare for a date with Noah.

“Oh, honey, please stop calling yourself a cougar,” Lexi said, tears streaming from her eyes.

Emeline put her fists on her hips and scowled.  “That’s what I am, aren’t I?”

“No. Emeline, you’re a wolf,” Bay said, clearly trying not to smile and failing badly. “A female wolf about to go on a date with a very sexy male wolf.  Stop calling yourself a cougar.

Though, oh my god, that’s hilarious.”

There is anxst, jealousy, pain, and love that is worked through in this story.  With each turn of the page I found myself holding my breath to see what would happen next.

A wonderful read, I wait anxiously for the next book in this series.

JACKAL’S MEASURE
(A Ludos Deorum Novella)
by NYT and USA Today Bestselling Author Marie Harte

Tortured by the god of chaos for centuries, Tariq knows only duty to numb the pain.

When he’s sent to collect Eden, a sexy human accused of interfering in the Games of the Gods, his missing heart beats again.

But love may not be enough to save them.

My Review:

I had never read Marie Harte before, now I know what I have been missing.

Games of the Gods. Nordic, Greek and Egyptian. A way to break the boredom of the pantheons.

Egyptian guardians to Anubus and Set, a girl who remembers even though they try to wipe her memory. It is a love that time and many different lives cannot suppress.

Tariq and Eden’s story is full of intriguing twists and turns. She begins to recall her past life with Tariq, when her name was Rehema.

Set wants something from Eden, but she doesn’t remember. One of my favorite scenes is just before Set arrives on the scene and Eden is beginning to remember her past lives.

“I can’t help being scared. This is all so new, and yet it’s not. I loved you as Rehema, but I didn’t know you when I was Gretchen or Marguerite. The knowledge of those other lives is starting to seep into me, and I’m scared.” In a low voice, she confessed, “When you left me the first time, it devastated me. I can’t lose you again.”

He pulled back to dry her tears. “We’ll find a way, habibti. No matter what, I won’t let anyone keep us apart.” He wanted to reassure her again, but what felt like an earthquake rocked the house.

“What—”

Tariq, my pet, Set whispered. I want my prize.

I really loved this book, and I found myself adding her books to my growing TBR mountain.

5 contented purrs for Marie!

ALPHA’S SACRIFICE
(A Fallen Alpha Novella)
by Rebecca Royce
Hayden Chaucer is determined to make the best life possible for his pack and is ill-prepared to discover his true mate waiting for him in his home.
Worse, his mate, Chelsea, has fled the True Believers, and her ability to see the future may cost them their present.

My Review:

Sexy, strong and dominant is a very brief description of Hayden Chaucer, Alpha of a small, loyal pack and owner the Chaucer Family Winery.

Chelsea Steefle is human, she has to warn Hayden of a threat to his life before it is too late. Problem is that to most people she appears to be crazy. She has visions and that’s how she knows Hayden and his pack are in danger.

My favorite part of this novella was when Hayden was trying to explain the true mating to Chelsea.

“It’s not all that common.” He shifted his stance suddenly feeling uncomfortable. “But it happens. It’s not like we’re not…built to be compatible. We have all the rights parts. It’s just that True Matings are rare, and, usually, if a wolf is settling into a relationship that isn’t a True Mating, they choose to do it with one of our own kind so that there aren’t the problems of existing in two different worlds. So, I guess it’s fair to say that most human-werewolf joinings are usually True Matings.”

She walked toward him, her eyes narrowed. “If all of this is true, then everything I’ve been through has been leading to this moment. My destiny. Is that it? Some universal deity decided that I should mate a werewolf and so, therefore, it shall be?”

A hot sexy read from Rebecca Royce, I love your Alpha wolves! I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

5 contented purrs for Rebecca!

TOUCH OF DESIRE
(An Ashwood Falls Novella)
by Lia Davis
A submissive wolf who lost it all finds herself in a mating dance with the very dominant senior enforcer who will stop at nothing to claim her.

My Review:

I love the Ashwood Falls series and I loved this added glimpse.

Cora is suffering from nightmares of being chased by and caught by Mutants (half human/half shifter beings), in the same way her parents and more recently her brother had ultimately met their deaths. On top of all this her wolf has withdrawn and she cannot shift.

With the help of her former Alpha she gets a job, designing the new security that would encompass the Ashwood Falls and MoonRiver dens.

In her new position she must work with Torin, a dominant male who knows she is his mate. He has been very patient so she can work through her grief but knows he must make a move.

A favorite passage in this book is when Cora is getting ready for a date with Torin.
Cora picked at her water bottle. “I can stay….”

“No way. You’re not getting out of it that easy. It’s about time you gave into Torin. I mean, the male has been chasing you for the last few months.” Jasmine tried to hide her smile behind the bottle. She failed terribly when it came to teasing Cora about Torin.

“Well he isn’t leaving much room for me to run anymore. Working on the security system means also working with him.” She sighed and leaned against the counter. “I don’t know how to handle him. He’s so much male and dominant.”

Jasmine laughed. “You don’t handle a male like Torin. You tease, love, and bite him.”

This book is well written with laughter, angst, tears, fear and sizzling hot passion. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

SANGUE FEVER
by Ann Mayburn
Drifting without a purpose, vampire Lisabetta finds herself yearning for something more. She finds it while hunting for her next donor. Things are not quite as they seem when she seduces an older mortal man and finds herself in danger of falling in love for the first time in centuries.

My Review:

When Ann Mayburn writes anything you know the sex is going to be take a cold shower hot. Sangue Fever is no exception.

Lizabetta is a vampire who wants something more than the feed and memory wipe that is common. Her Master Sargon wants her to become a maker herself so she can have the committed relationship, that for some reason she can’t seem to have with him.

She meets Tyler and everything is different. Could he be the one that she could find that happiness with? Would Sargon approve of her choice and will he be allowed in the relationship?

One of my favorite passages is when she first sees Tyler

The feeling of needing, craving.. something intensified until she hugged herself, wishing Sargon was still here so he could hold her.

As that last thought made her want to tear up, she met the gaze of a man in his early forties sitting in another area of the VIP section. He had close-cropped dark hair with thick shocks of silver streaking through it. A black cowboy hat sat on the table before him, and she had a sudden, vivid mental image of riding him wearing just the hat. He was sexy, so damn sexy it made her teeth ache to taste him. His tanned face had faint lines, and she could see the solid, muscular build of his broad chest and shoulders beneath his paid shirt. Something about him radiated power and control, but it wasn’t in the way of immortals. No, this man was one hundred percent human and utterly delicious. All thoughts of anyone’s gaze except for the powerful man before her vanished as pure primal need filled her.

She wanted him.

Now.

This book just sizzles off the pages.

5 contented purrs for Ann!

FORBIDDEN RESCUE
(A Watchers Novella)
by Heather Long

All Jubilee Spector wants is to save her brother. The last thing she expects is to stumble into a dark world and another’s war. But Fox Arada is so much more than a man, and her secret threatens to change the Watchers’ world forever.

My Review:

The watchers are keeping a handle on a heavenly war and along comes Jubilee, in a most disconcerting way, to change everything.

Jubilee stumbled into Fox’s room at a hotel while on the run from drug dealers. After he dispatched them, he ends up in trouble with his friend and one of the leaders, Enoch.

Fox has essentially kidnapped Jubliee in order to tend her wounds and protect her. All the while denying the powerful attraction to her. What amazes him most is that she can and does resist everything he suggests. As a human this should have been impossible.

In spite of being kidnapped Jubilee can’t help her attraction to Fox. She wants him, yet needs to get away. Back to her brother who will be in even more danger now.

One of my favorite scenes is right after Fox explains what he is.

“I say it’s a good thing you’re pretty. Because you’re bat-crap crazy,” she said. It was the best she could manage. “I’m not going to tell anyone about those men. You saved my life, and that’s enough for me. I didn’t need the fairy tale.” With trembling hands, she put the teacup aside. ” I want to go home now.”

His expression tightened, and darkness shuttered his eyes. She didn’t have to know him well to read the anger in the compressed line of his lips.

“Did you not hear a word I said?”

“I heard you, and you’re nuts.” She shoved the blanket back and swung her legs out of the bed. It was long past time to go, and, even if the peculiar faith her gut had in him hadn’t wavered one iota through his mad story, she had to question whether her instincts were firing on all cylinders.

“You don’t believe me.”

“No. I don’t. There are no such thing as shifters, much less angels and demons and a war and–“

The world exploded in a shower of sparkles, and all the oxygen seemed to whoosh out of the room and then back again. Where Fox had been sitting, now a red fox stood. The animal was huge and beautiful.

“Oh. My. God.”

What happens next I won’t tell you. It’s big, really big.

Complicated plot twists and hotter than hell sex. It doesn’t get better.

What seductive, contemporary romance will you find today? ARIES.

Ethan Andrews makes his living reading people and tailoring his sales pitch to what they want. He lives his life on the road, traveling from city to city, hotel to hotel, and it all works for him until he meets Norah Silver—the woman he wants to come home to.

Norah Silver has a plan, one that requires focus and dedication. She’s working sixty to eighty hours a week between her two jobs—one for money and the other for her passion. She thrives on giving solid relationship advice that may be based in the stars, but also grounded in reality. The last thing she expected was to find a sizzling love connection of her own.

Sparks fly when these two stubborn Aries launch into an impulsive relationship. Telling themselves lust is actually enough turns out to be a lie, but can these rams bend enough to recognize it or will their off the charts chemistry explode before they really get started?

SummerBlog My Review

Norah Silver has a radio show based on Astrology signs and love.  Her best friend is leaving on a long weekend vacation and they meet for a drink before her flight. This is one of my favorite passages at the very beginning of the story.  It is only  part of the conversation where Norah compares herself to an orange crayon.

“The one always left in the box…you know when you’re a kid and you do a lot of coloring?  You use the blues for the sky and the water, the green for the grass, and the white for clouds and yellow for the sun.   Red shows up for flowers or shoes or cars..”

“Or fire engines,” Tina added helpfully.

“Yes, fire engines.  Right.  Brown even gets a cut of the action for people and for tree bark.  But orange?  Orange sits in the box untouched and unblemished.  It’s always the sharpest crayon, but the least used.  The paper isn’t crinkled…and if it rolled off the table and onto the floor and beneath a chair to lie forgotten–no one would notice.”

Tina blinked once.  “Damn, girl, you need to get the hell out of your head.  The orange crayon?  That’s some fucked-up shit right there.”

As Norah is finishing her drink before leaving the airport she is approached by a very handsome stranger.  Against all odds, they end up having dinner together and I have to admit that the way he convinced her to go is quite genius.

With a few twists and lots of really hot sex (I would expect nothing less from an Aries) this is a quick and fun read.

A Shadow’s Embrace
Indigo Shadows – An On The Run Novella
By Cara Carnes

SummerBlog Blurb

On the run from evil, her only hope is the Shadows.

Devyn James escaped hell once. Kidnapped from foster care at seven and raised in a psychic genetics testing facility, she survived by hiding her ability. A rare technopath, she eventually broke out of the facility with the help of the Shadow Elites—General Conver’s super soldiers, who rebelled and now fought to protect psychically enhanced humans. Determined to help the cause, she formed Indigo Order—a foundation focused on providing food, shelter, medicine, training and support for the displaced lower level psychics, especially the children tossed to the streets by Conver years ago.

For the past few months Devyn, or Indy as she’s known on the street, has covertly passed intel to the SEO. Even though the street doesn’t trust the Shadows, she does. They rescued her once and she knows they’re the only ones who will be able to save her from Conver and figure out what she uncovered.

Dagan is determined to save the female being chased by Conver and his squadron. He soon discovers her identity and vows he’ll do anything to keep her protected—even if it’s from herself. But the sultry female proves to be a handful when her team is in the crosshairs. When one of them is captured, he must prove she can trust him and all he offers, even though he may not believe someone as good as her should be with a Shadow.

Together they discover everything is possible when you trust A Shadow’s Embrace.

SummerBlog My Review

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

When you open this book, you open the door to an action packed, nailbiting adventure. Each psychic has different abilities and levels in this world,

Devyn/Indy is a technopath, she can find and analyze data telepathically. This is a talent she managed to keep hidden when she was captive in the facility. Her foundation, Indigo Order, helps those thrown out or ignored by the facility.

With the help of her crew, Dane a telekinetic, Rider a telepath, Cadence an audiopath, and Mia an empath, she has been covertly using her ability to help the SEO, find information that can lead to the destruction of the General. Except this last time, she hid away from her crew and found something in that wealth of information that has put her on the General’s radar. She just doesn’t know what.

When the Shadow Elite show up to get her out of that very sticky situation, she meets her contact Dagan for the first time.

Dagan is a telepath/manipulator, he can use his psychic powers to make someone do what he wants them to do.

With her team in danger and one missing, Devyn needs to go back in, to get the data and gather intel required to find Rider. They put together a crew similar to Indy’s consisting of Dagan, Kaegan their leader, a telepath/empath, Ace a tech geek, twins  Corbin and Cash see pasts of objects and people, Rex and Trent telepaths.

In order to get Rider out of the General’s clutches the Street crews and the Shadows will have to work together for the first time. It’s an interest gathering to say the least.

Intense emotions of time spent in the facility assault the Elites as they sort through the information Devyn has obtained, and find a disturbing truth.

There is so much going on, and in spite of it all or maybe because of it Devyn and Dagan form a very hot and intense relationship.

This is one of my favorite passages, found near the beginning of the book, as Dagan and Devyn try to find common ground.

“If you think I don’t respect what you and your crew do, you’re crazy. It takes balls, brass ones, to put yourself on radar to help others. Y’all do that without the tactical training we’ve got behind us.” He squeezed her arm slightly. “Not a single Shadow I know isn’t terrified at the thought of Conver getting his hands on you or someone in your group. We’ve seen what he’s capable of. It’s worse than you could imagine.”

“I don’t have to imagine it.” She turned and held his gaze, even though the fiery obsidian depths made her thoughts falter. “You weren’t the only group held. You might’ve endured more, had to do more black ops than we could imagine, but I assure you the cages were the same, the restrictions the same. The punishments the same.”

His gaze darkened, narrowed. “You were in a facility? You weren’t in the halfway houses or camps? Which facility? Where?”

She took a deep breath. “I’m not doing this, not now. I’ve said too much as it is. We are well aware of what we risk and why. We aren’t backing down just because we lack the firepower you have. We don’t need guns to pass out food, and we aren’t stupid. That’s why I lob all the serious things to the SEO. You’re equipped to handle what I can’t.”

“I know a few people who’d love to know how you get your hands on that shit.” He crossed his arms. “It looks like there might’ve been something you forgot to lob our way. What went south? Why were you running from Conver today?”

“I don’t know.” The admission made heat rise in her face. “I mean, I must’ve stumbled across the wrong thing. Obviously.”

Fast paced, and hot in more ways than one. I hope there will be more to this series.

SummerBlog My Review

Lone wolves are challenging the Talon Pack Alpha Gideon, with increasing frequency and none of them have had the dominance to win. On top of this, it is becoming apparent that wolves will not be a hidden entity much longer. In an effort to control how the wolves are made public, the Redwood and Talon packs have a meeting to discuss how this should be done. This is where the fun begins.

Brie has known Gideon is her mate since she was seventeen. The problem, she is a submissive wolf, and as such really isn’t suited to be an Alpha’s mate. She has managed to avoid meeting him since that day so long ago, now her hiding is over. Kane, Alpha of the Redwood pack has ordered her to be at the meeting with the Talon pack.

When Gideon meets Brie, he knows right away she’s his mate, and a submissive. Since she doesn’t acknowledge anything he decides fate made a mistake and is going to ignore this little fact. Unfortunately for him the elders of his pack have other ideas. In an effort to exert their power the elders decide to invoke the Mating Clause on the Alpha “for the good of the pack”. Faced with a forced mating Gideon tells the elders he has found his potential mate but has not had the opportunity to pursue her. When Brie discovers this she travels to meet with Gideon. Better to have the mate the Goddess has given them than to have one forced by the elders and witches.

The mating instinct is strong with these two and they can’t seem to keep their hands off each other. With this starting backwards and they really don’t know each other, Gideon is way too overprotective of her.  This is making it difficult for Brie to find her place in the pack.

Top that off with the elder Shannon hating her and the surprise appearance of a wolf who should be dead and the sparks really start flying. The pack has an internal problem that could mean the end of the current relative peace if Gideon and Brie don’t get it together.

I loved this book, the intricate weaving of the story as Gideon and Brie find their paths in spite of everything that is against them.

 SummerBlog My Review

Oh how I love this series.  This is Sable and Jared’s story and it couldn’t be more intense if it tried.

Savannah and Felix are coming for their daughter. Sable has made a deal with the Council to destroy her parents and end the escalating war, in exchange for a pardon.

Jared is opposed to this idea but knows he must go with her. She is his fated mate and he must bring her back alive to their son.

Being near each other without restoring the mating bond is painful for both of them. Sable knows how to kill her father, but needs to find Savannah’s weakness to defeat her.

Savannah is searching for Sable and has a new mutant tracker. The question is, does Sable, with Jared, have the magical strength to defeat her.

A fast paced story with lots of emotion and turmoil. I love the way we see the growth of the characters in each progressing story. I look forward to seeing more of this diverse pack.

SummerBlog My Review

I love this large family and their devotion to each other. Everyone of them has their obstacles to overcome and at the moment it looks like it is Megan and Alex.

This book is Megan’s. She’s now divorced from Richard and working for Montgomery Inc. the construction and renovation branch of the family. Megan, has been put down over and over throughout her marriage so that she is convinced she has no self worth. Afraid to ask for help as she tries to prove to herself and the world that she is not helpless.

Luc was Megan’s best friend, he loved her as more than that but never found the courage to tell her. He left right before her wedding ceremony unable to face the fact that she would never be his.

Their relationship has many obstacles to overcome, and Richard, of course, has to make things worse.  One thing the Mongomery Clan does well is stand up for and fight for their own.

I loved this book it touches on some very emotional and devastating issues and the effects on those not only personally affected, but those around them.

Have tissues handy, you will definitely need them. I laughed and cried and fanned myself through the sizzling, hot bedroom and not in bedroom scenes.

Bravo, Carrie for bringing the issues of spousal mental abuse to light in an inspirational way.

Five Contented Purrs for this episode of the Montgomery Ink Series.

SummerBlog Excerpt

“Everything okay, Meghan?”
She turned on her heel at the sound of Luc’s voice and stumbled over her own feet. She reached out and tried to grab her truck’s side mirror and missed.

Oh, hell…

She did her best to brace herself for the fall to the parking lot asphalt, but just when she figured she’d hit, strong arms wrapped around her waist. Luc’s heart beat against her ear, and his muscled chest should have felt hard and unyielding against her cheek. Instead, it was warm and…inviting?

No. That couldn’t be right.

She must be lacking oxygen from preparing to fall. Luc’s hands moved down to her hips, and she placed her hands on his chest—was he always so built?

Okay, enough of this.

“Uh, thanks for saving me from making an ass out of myself,” she said then blushed. “Okay, so I still made an ass out of myself, but at least I’m not bleeding.”

Luc smiled down at her. “I’m used to women dropping at my feet. No worries.”

Considering how hot he’d always been, and the fact that he was one gorgeous specimen of a man now, she figured he was probably not exaggerating in the slightest. His dark chocolate skin was flawless over hard muscles, and his face held strong features. His jaw was strong, and every once in a while, he let his beard grow out just enough that it left a nice shadow. He kept his midnight black hair cut close to his head, and sometimes he even shaved it. At least he did when he was younger. She hadn’t seen him shave it in the year since he’d been back.

His honey-colored eyes bored into her, and she pushed at his chest so she could stand away from him. Easier to collect herself when she wasn’t draped over the man like some weak-kneed southern belle.

“Well, thank you for catching me.”

“Why did you swoon?” He smiled as he said it, so she knew he was teasing her, but she still narrowed her eyes.

“Swoon? I don’t swoon. I tripped over my own feet, but I didn’t swoon.”

He held up his hands in mock surrender. “Whatever you say, angel eyes.”

She froze for a moment at the nickname.

Angel eyes.

Hell, he hadn’t called her that since before he left town without a word.

Since her wedding day.
