Bear shifters exist.

Professor Bria Lane has known this since she was a child. Now she’s returned to the forests of Deep Creek to prove it to the world. She has no idea how close she is to that proof in ruggedly sexy park ranger Derek Poole. Intimately close. But uncovering Derek’s wild side comes with a shattering price.

Like a magnet meeting metal, Derek is drawn to Bria. His destiny. His mate. So beautiful and so vulnerable. So dangerous, too: an encroachment of lions, vengeful and vicious, is closing in and they’re ready for war. Now is not the time to be distracted like a lovesick cub.

If Bria reveals the truth of the Deep Creek shifters to the world, she’ll bring out the worst of both sides. But Derek can’t hide his secrets from the love of his life forever. He knows they’re playing with fire–and that when passion runs this hot, this reckless, someone’s bound to get burned.

Lions, Bears and Wolves, Oh my!

The shifter world around Deep Creek is complex. Their world is about to be shaken up by war. The Lions want the Cave of Whispers back in their possession. At one time it was shared by the wolves, lions and bears. Now it is a point of contention.

Dr. Bria Lane believes in shifters, she saw them as a child or she thinks she did. She has returned to where she believes she saw the bear shifters determined to prove her theory. Although her grant says she is studying hydration post hibernation. She hopes to get some DNA that will prove the difference and possible help with human diseases.

When Derek Poole comes upon her camping alone in an unauthorized place in the park, he warns her of the dangers in the area, especially the lions. However he discovers something else as well, the lovely ursinologist is his mate.

Unfortunately, the heirs to the lion pride, Marco and Mason overhear their conversation and plan for her demise. They can’t let anyone leak the secret of shifters. Along with their Father Max they are also planning to take back the Cave of Whispers. This is the war that has been a long time coming and they intend to win. Even by bribing the wolf shifters to help them gain information from the Bears about the cave and it’s contents.

Bria has a problem with lies, and the shifter secret is the biggest lie of omission that Derek could make. He has no choice, but he has to protect and woo his mate. Hopefully she will stay and not say anything about the shifters and accept him as he is.

One of my favorite things about this series is the way the romance builds between the mated pairs. Of course the sex is off the charts hot, but the story around it is just as enthralling.

A favorite scene is when Derek and Bria meet and is in the excerpt below. Be sure to read it.

“What’s an ursus…umm…whatever you said? I’ve always worked with my hands—I never was a college guy. Didn’t have the patience to sit still in the classroom.” Derek kicked at the ground then looked up.“No worries.” She snapped her attention back to what he was saying. “Most people don’t know what an ursinologist is—it’s someone who studies bears.”

“Bears, huh?” He shook his head and laughed. “You study bears?”

“What’s so funny?” She crossed her arms. “It’s a valid profession. And I’m doing what I love.”

“Nothing wrong with it, Bria.” He stepped so close to her she had to look up to meet his gaze, and held his hands up in mock surrender. “I think it’s a fine profession, I’ve just never heard of it. It’s a totally new job that I’ve never heard of. Yet here you are in the woods with me, so I guess we aren’t that far apart, career-wise.”

Derek was in her space and even though they weren’t touching, she felt his presence touching hers, like a low-level energy buzzing in the evening air, crackling when hers met his. One step closer and she could pull that hair band out and hop into his arms, straddling him as she kissed him. She shook her head to clear her naughty thoughts. Ugh. Stop. The thoughts about what she’d like to do to the hot park ranger needed to stop. Maybe she’d been out in the sun too long. Normally she didn’t ogle guys. In fact, she couldn’t remember the last time she had. She cleared her throat and took a step back. “I thought you were laughing at me.”

“No. I didn’t know there was a name for someone who studies bears. Plus, the word sounds kinda funny.” He scanned the forest, thumbs in his belt loops. “I guess you’re in the right place to look for bears, though. Especially this deep in the forest. Lots of them live in Deep Creek. They’re everywhere. Probably closer than you think.”

“I hope so.” Her shoulders lowered and she blew out a breath. “Have you seen any this season? I know they are more active in summer. After they’ve woken from hibernation.”

“I see them every day. I’m out in the woods a lot.” He chewed his lip. “They really only partially hibernate, though. But yeah, I guess you could say I’ve seen a lot of bears here in Deep Creek.”

He’d seen bears. Recently. Her pulse thumped in her neck and she leaned forward, as if being near him would make the bears closer. Excitement rang in her ears. “Where? Can you show me, or at least give me some pointers where to look? I can’t wait to see them.”

“My best advice is to keep your eyes open. You never know when a bear will appear right in front of you.”

blurb-fall-cornucopia

Book 1 in the Shifter Wars series from Carina Press.

Sexy shifter passion is awakened when two unlikely lovers are challenged by secrets, danger and an unstoppable need to claim one’s mate…

For human Amy Francis, the secluded cabin in Deep Creek is the haven she needs to map out a fresh new start. She never expected her heart to be reawakened by a distraction like Griff Martin, commanding yet gentle, too feriociously sensual too ignore. It’s clear that patrolling the forest is more than a job to Griff—it’s a means of survival. But what Amy doesn’t realize is she’s reawakened the beast within him.

Griff’s dormant hunger is stirred by this intoxicating woman…and threatened by the secret she must never learn. Duty-bound to defend his bear clan against an avenging pride of lion shifters, Griff’s entire world is upended when he meets Amy. His animal need to claim his mate has taken hold, but that very desire could seal her fate as an unwitting pawn in battle.

Now, as a shifter war looms, Griff must decide between letting Amy go or following his most carnal instincts. To have her would change his life…but risk everything he knows and was born to protect.

review-fall-cornucopia

Amy came to the mountains for peace, quiet and a chane to get her priorities together. Having gotten rid of a controlling abusive boyfriend and losing her job, she wants to go back to true art now. Unfortunately she has a bit of a problem listening to sound advice with regard to staying out of the forest.

Griff is a Bear shifter and a Park Ranger. The forest is the domain of the bears but the lions have been staking it out.
War is coming and the last thing Griff needs is a Mate. But a mate is what he finds when he meets the woman who is renting his old family cabin for a couple of months. Amy is very attracted to her landlord even more so after the shower in the cabin breaks. Then she runs into him at the diner in town. This is a favorite scene.

“Not used to being the center of attention?” He grinned and a hint of dimples showed on his cheeks.

She shook her head. Of course she wasn’t. How could he ask such a thing. Who would answer yes?

“Well, I’m afraid you’ll have to get used to a bit of extra attention, at least for a while. You’re like the shiny new bauble on the Christmas tree. Everyone is going to want to take a look at the pretty new thing in town.” He stared, his eyes dilating. “And I don’t blame them.”

This time she couldn’t duck her head fast enough to avoid the blush rushing up her chest and neck and onto her cheeks. They burned. “I just want to paint. Not be gawked at.”

“Oh, they’ll get tired of talking about you quickly enough.” He flexed his fingers. “As long as you don’t give them something special to talk about. You’re not planning on doing anything wild or strange, are you? Like dancing naked in the moonlight or casting spells in the town square?”

“Of course I’m not.” She sat back. Surely he was joking. People in Oakwood weren’t really going to talk about her. She couldn’t be the only new person in town. In Atlanta, you had anonymity from city block to city block. “I’ll save the moonlit dancing to a night when I have a partner.”
“Is that an offer?” Amy’s mouth fell open, then she closed it. All she could manage was shaking her head no.

He winked. “Then you’ve got nothing to worry about. They’ll be bored with you in no time.”

“Good.” She looked past him at the door. She could make it there in ten seconds. No, she needed to eat before she left. She was too hungry to leave without eating and it wouldn’t kill her to enjoy a meal with her landlord. That wasn’t weird or a date or anything. His flirting, as bold as it was, made her warm and fuzzy inside. Who was she kidding? It made her hot as hell. She squirmed on the seat.
Adrienne, Kerry. Waking the Bear (Shifter Wars) (Kindle Locations 1091-1106). Carina Press. Kindle Edition.

Watching Amy and Griff’s relationship develop was fun, especially since she is human and he has to hold in his feelings. This book really has it all, the lion seeking revenge, a bar fight, a landslide and some really hot sex.

While I realize not all clans packs or prides or whatever they are called based on species can get along, I find myself not wanting this war. The Cave of Whispers was once shared by the Bears and Lions, why can’t it be so again.

The stranger carries a deadly wolf virus—one that hasn’t been seen in the Black Hills in ages.

Kimi, a Lakota Sioux, is dying. She’s transported herself forward in time, hoping to find the cure to the illness that’s stricken her tribe. Her only chance for survival is to trust Nika, even if she’s not used to having help.

To find the cure and save the pack, Nika and Kimi must travel to a time long ago—before the Lakota populated the Black Hills—a time filled with dangers neither can imagine. Their growing attraction may save them, or kill them both.

One of the things I most enjoy about this series is how the different authors portray the pack.

In this one Nika is a new scout who finds a woman hurt and seriously ill in the woods. Again we see Drew in a harsher light, one that we don’t always see but necessary for the safety of the pack. Ryker also shows a side he doesn’t usually since Drew became Alpha. Gee is once again knowledgeable of things as he determines this lovey woman named Kimi is from the past. This is a favorite scene.

She moaned, and Nika’s heart sped. He kept quiet, letting the older pack members sort out what was to be done. His body ached with the need to be near her, but he held himself in check. A wrong move, and he could end up in an even worse situation. His place in the pack was one of deference to the Alpha. Always. No matter what he wanted, his Alpha’s wishes came first. That’s how things worked in the pack.

“I know a healer.” Gee stood.

“Who?” Drew asked. “Not too close?”

“Her name is Wen. She works alone, deep in the Black Hills sanctuary. Nowhere near Los Lobos.”

Drew nodded. “Perfect. Nika, I want you to think about what might have happened if we hadn’t been close by to handle this situation. Not only could our pack’s safety have been an issue, but you could’ve been killed.”

“Yes, Alpha.”

“Gee will remind you of the procedures, and next time, you’ll follow them.”

Nika nodded.

“We’ll leave now. I can carry this female.” Gee sighed.

“Very good.” Drew stuck his hands in his pockets.

“Kill her.” The deep voice, though quiet, thundered through the clearing. The birds stopped chattering.

Ryker.

Where the fuck had he come from? The Enforcer leaned against a tree, arms crossed and scowling. Nika shuddered, remaining quiet. The last Wolf in the world he wanted to piss off was Ryker.

“No, we can’t kill her.” Gee shook his head. “She’s our little Nika’s mate.”

He blinked. Had he heard Gee correctly? Mate? He swallowed hard. No, no way the she-Wolf was his mate— she wasn’t even a pack member. And he wasn’t old enough. Well, he was, but he wasn’t ready to settle down. She was gorgeous and made his body act independent of his mind.

Mate? No.

Drew harrumphed. “Well then, that complicates things.”

Kimi tried to sit up, collapsing when she raised her head.

“I-is she okay?” Nika asked.

Gee leaned his ear over her face and paused. “She’s breathing.” He sat up. “She fainted. We need to go. Wen’s got a lot of work ahead of her.”
Adrienne, Kerry. The Wolf and the Butterfly (Black Hills Wolves Book 19) (Kindle Locations 166-186). Decadent Publishing. Kindle Edition.

Wen is a powerful healer/Raven shifter. Wen explains the cure and how they must get it. Back in time, further than even Kimi’s time.

An exciting adventure with surprises at almost every turn as Nika and Kimi find not only the cure but love as well.

Review Spring Blog - Copy

This book was a gift in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Once again Lia perks up the interest in the first pages. A cloaked figure in white, a gargoyle waking, a cemetery and a bed and breakfast. Add in a car accident and we have our recipe for danger and excitement.

Hitting a tree was not how Nate wanted to start his vacation, but being it was close to a bed and breakfast it wasn’t so bad. Well other than the storm that was raging.

Haylee the proprietor of the quaint establishment, was welcoming in spite of her staff being off for the weekend. Although she may have been a bit short when explaining no phone or internet. I think that snippiness was more due to the attraction she was feeling than anything else.

Neither Haylee or Nate know what to make of Cam, showing up with no luggage in the middle of the storm. He’s here one minute then gone the next.

A spooky basement, with a somewhat hidden room discovered on a tour of the house. Something else is happening beyond the curse she knows about.  This is a favorite scene as they try to piece together what Haylee’s grandmother had done.

“Grams had worked in the ritual room for days. She’d forbidden me from entering the basement. When she finally came out, the stone was gone and she told me that everything would be fine now.” Haylee hugged her waist as a single tear rolled down her cheek. “The next morning, I found her dead in her bed. She’d passed in her sleep.”

Instantly, Nate rushed around the desk and wrapped his arms around her, drawing her into his chest. “I believe it’s the stone that’s cursed, not your family.”

She lifted her head and locked gazes with him, her eyes narrowing. “The stone? Why the stone?”

“I’m not sure. But I think we need to find out.” The first thing Nate would do was question the old man. After all, it was he who’d planted the idea in his head. “What do you know about it?”

“Grams found it when she and Papa were on vacation at the coast. The Sunstone can aid in healing, protection, and success. Plus, it’s associated with the element fire, which was Grams’ favorite element to work with.”

Haylee averted her gaze and moved toward the door, but not before he saw the tears fill her eyes.

“Is it possible that if the stone were cursed, it would react negatively?”

Stopping in the doorway, she turned to him. “Yes, that would, in many cases, be the point of a curse.” She rushed out the room as if realizing something.

He followed her with quick steps, stopping when she entered her bedroom. “What is it?” “It’s just a thought, but I think Grams was trying the break the curse. When she was unable to, she tried to contain the negative energy.” She zipped from her dresser to the nightstands on either side of her bed, opening drawers.

Confused, he watched her go to the closet and dig around on the floor. “I’m not following.”

“If it is the stone that’s cursed, then the fire within the stone is gone. The attraction and sexual energy were altered in some way. That is the only thing that makes senses.” She pulled out a shoebox and opened it. A moment later, she withdrew a black cloth. After removing the Sunstone from around her neck, she wrapped it in the cloth and placed it inside the box.

“Without the fire, the passion, a couple will fall out of love.”
SunstonesFire LiaDavis-eBook (Kindle Locations 411-429). Kindle Edition.

Nate and Haylee need to find a way to undo the curse or neither of them will ever have a happily ever after. Then there is Cam and his secrets.

I thoroughly enjoyable read. Lots of suspense and intrigue combined with a love story that gets the heart pounding and the pulse racing.

I can’t wait for the next installment in this series.
