Guest Post from Lauren Smith

With the explosion of E.L. James Fifty Shades of Grey, there has been a lot of renewed interest in romance novels with BDSM elements. I had been reading some of the BDSM books before Fifty Shades was released and had really enjoyed the dynamics of what that sort of relationship could offer story-wise.

When I sent out to write the Surrender Series, there was a cataclysmic event that occurred 25 years before the series starts: a kidnapping of two twin 8 year old boys from their family mansion. Years later, only one twin still survives and the effects of this tragic event have rippling consequences over the lives of the twins and their two closest boyhood friends. I wanted to show a group of men burdened with secrets and personal tragedy and how that would play out upon the page with heroines who were brave enough to face the heroes and their pasts.

After I decided to make BDSM part of the story, I knew I had to research it right. E.L. James incorrectly portrayed the BDSM lifestyle with regard to her story and I knew I needed to not make that mistake. BDSM isn’t a lifestyle that comes from abuse, or neglect. It’s situation of power exchange. I liked writing about heroines who were brave but enjoyed submission in the bedroom. It’s not because they are weak characters. Surrendering your control is actually a powerful thing and the dominant partner you are with, they don’t enjoy “taking” the control, they want the submissive to “gift” it to them. It’s a true exchange of power. It’s a symbiotic partnership. Both parties need something the other can give them. I liked the idea of exploring this in a romantic setting.

The most important thing I wanted to do when writing about BDSM was show readers that submissive women in the bedroom are not timid mice, nor are they doormats. Instead these are powerful, smart, brave women who just like to let a man take control in bed and that there is nothing wrong with that. And I loved writing sexually explosive, dominating alpha males who by the end of the story, are complete teddy bears emotionally when it comes to the women. So there was the fascinating emotional exchange. The heroines gave up control in bed, and the men gave their hearts to the heroines in exchange. It was a lot of fun to write how all of this power plays came out.

In The Gilded Chain, I have the hero Wes, the most dominant and into BDSM out of all of the heroes so far featured in the series and he takes the heroine most innocent to that culture. Callie is a virgin, and she knows nothing of the world outside her ranch. I wanted to give both Wes and Callie a setting that would play into the mystery, excitement and sensuality of their upcoming adventures that would both romance and seduce the reader. Paris was the natural choice. Wes is an art lover, Callie is an artist, and the entire city is made for love. And that was the most crucial part for me. When I write BDSM into my books I don’t fill the pages with tons of sexually explicit, graphic sex scenes, instead, I gently ease the reader into the world, and tease them with elements of the lifestyle and all the while I put the focus on the romance, not just the sex. Because for me, it’s all about the love story in the end and if you have a few spankings along the way, well that just spices up the happy ending.

Fall Tree Blog - sm - My review

I think this is my favorite story in the Surrender Series to date. Callie is so sheltered and naïve and Wes is so worldly and I’m sorry to say it, blasé.

Callie has loved Fenn for years, but he never saw her as more than a friend, a little sister. Now he is engaged and her heart is broken. Her father has no idea how to make her feel better.

From the moment Wes saw her Callie wanted her. He knew she needed time, but he found her irresistible. His idea of a bet was a win/win for him. For Callie, it could mean so much more.

I loved the build up in this book, the internal struggles for both of them. The challenge of the bet, to art lessons at the Louvre. His patient, well kind of patient, introduction to his lifestyle, was incredibly hot. I loved that Callie’s knowledge of BDSM was from her romance novels, she must have read good ones. All that and an art theft to solve.

A beautiful romance that builds from sizzling seduction scenes to the passionate taking of her virginity. A journey into submission for her, and unconditional love for them both.

by Lauren Smith

Series: Surrender, #1

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: February 10, 2015

Every passion has its price . . .

Journalist Sophie Ryder has been following Emery Lockwood’s story since she was a little girl. There has always been something in his haunted eyes that she couldn’t resist and now, when she’s certain he holds the key to solving a string of kidnappings, she’ll do anything to speak to him. Even if it means venturing deep into the seductive world of the Gilded Cuff, a luxurious BDSM club on Long Island’s Gold Coast and Emery’s personal playground.

From the moment Sophie enters his shadowy, sensual domain, Emery Lockwood knows this tantalizing new little sub was meant to belong to him. However, Sophie wants more from Emery than just pleasure . . . she wants his past. And that is something he isn’t willing to give—no matter who is asking. But every moment he spends with Sophie, Emery feels his control slipping and he knows it’s only a matter of time before he surrenders to her heart, body, and soul.

My Review:

This book was a gift from the author/publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Sophie Ryder had no idea what she was getting into when she agreed to let Emery Lockwood be her Master in exchange for his story.  All she knew was that she had to save him; that the kidnapper from his childhood wasn’t done with him.

I loved this story, the suspense just keeps rising as the pages turn.  I tried to guess to no avail.  There are many surprises in this book and Sophie’s submission is a beautiful thing to read.

Hotter than hot with and without sex the words sizzle off the pages.

One of my very favorite passages is the excerpt following my review.

I loved all the characters in the book especially Cody (Emery’s tech guy) and Hans his bodyguard and head of security.  Since Emery is mostly a recluse not leaving his estate, we only see a few of his friends and his parents.

I ran the gambit on emotions with this book and I cannot wait for the next in this series.

I give this book Five Contented Purrs, thank you Lauren!

He slid his hands up to her wrists then connected his palms to hers. She responded, lacing her fingers through his, squeezing gently. His throat tightened and his eyes burned.

The simple connection—so sweet, so innocent—bound him to her, like a shimmering web spun between them, unbreakable and inescapable. He lifted his head a few inches, needing to see her eyes.

They were luminous, her lashes at half-mast. He was lost. A world of unimaginable beauty existed in the crescent silver of her dreamy gaze. He felt like a man from the ancient world, gazing north at the distant star Polaris, finding his way home by the loyal light that shone there. She saw him, every part of her, her light penetrating the shadows stretching out from his soul. He was open, laid bare before her, a man prostrate before a goddess.

Completely and totally vulnerable.

A tremble racked his shoulders, his muscles clenching and tensing. Then pleasure swept through him. He was in control of this luscious, precious woman. He could take her, give her such ecstasy she’d never recover.

Sophie licked her lips, her breath slightly uneven.

“You have to stop doing that,” she whispered in all seriousness, her nose wrinkling just a little.

He cocked a brow. “Doing what?”

“Kissing me like that.”

“You don’t like the way I kiss?” Her body told him otherwise as he shifted above her, the movement pressing his groin into hers. She raised her hips, seeking him, but the sheet and their clothes kept them worlds apart.

“I like it too much. That’s the problem.”

He rolled his hips again, reveling in the little hiss of frustration she made.

“What else do you like too much?” He dropped his head to her neck and nibbled on the underside of her throat. She shook slightly, her pulse leaping beneath his tongue. She was incredibly responsive and her inexperience made her reactions raw and pure. It was perfect. She was perfect.

“That. That’s definitely too good.” Her response was barely more than a breathless rush of words.

“Good. My sub has pleased me with her honest responses. You’ve earned a reward.” He eased off her and lay down beside her on the bed.

Sophie’s hands fluttered to her wrists, making contact with the gold cuffs.

“What are these?”

“Cuffs.”

Sophie’s lips twitched, even as she narrowed her eyes. “Yeah, I can see that. Why’d you put them on me?”

He propped himself up on one elbow and drew a finger along the sensitive skin of her inner right wrist by the cuff.

“It’s part of our bargain. The cuffs remind you that you are mine.”

“Okay, so what’s my reward for allowing this?”

“You didn’t allow it, Sophie. You surrendered to it. Never think being a submissive is about allowing your dom to do something. You surrender. You give me your power.” Emery cupped her face and held her gaze, forcing her to confront his domination and accept it.

Her eyes—still wild, still free—darkened like a waning moon. “I surrender.”
