Witch Switch
Bewitch Me Book 2
By
Louisa Bacio

How do you fight evil
when it’s yourself?

Rafe turned away from an arranged marriage for one based on love. His choices, though, left the woman he loved in danger.

Cheyenne took her inherited witch powers for granted until she needed them most when the jilted bride wants revenge.

Together, Rafe and Cheyenne must unravel which witch is real in the ultimate Witch Switch for power and love.

Cheyenne and Rafe are in love, the only problem is he’s been promised to another.

Meredith has been waiting a long time for Rafe to set the wedding date. When he arranges a meeting that what she thought he was going to do instead he calls off the engagement. One thing about Meredith, she always gets what she wants and she’s not always nice about it.

Since the council has approved the match, Rafe also has to get his parents on board with the change. That’s not going to be easy since they never felt Cheyenne was good enough for him.

Cheyenne knows Meredith and has strengthened the wards on her house. She knows how evil the woman could be and their families have always been in conflict. She’d need the extra protection.

In the middle of all this she finds she has two sisters on her father’s side. He was/is a musician with very much a love ’em and leave ’em attitude. She also has very little powers since she vowed not to use them again after her mother died. She’s also hoping her sister, Justine, who just showed up on her doorstep can help her reconnect with her powers.

Unfortunately, Meredith shows up before that can happen, and that results in something unusual and in the witch world dangerous and illegal. This is just part of what happens with Rafe.

This is a favorite scene.

“PLEASE STAY.” It was almost impossible to ask for help. It’s like part of her fought with another for control. “My body is kind of miserable right now. I hate it.”

That didn’t sound right. Why was she thinking of herself in third person? Cheyenne slapped her palms against her thighs and resisted the urge to pinch the soft flesh under her arms until it turned red and swollen.

She lost.

“What are doing?” He grabbed hold of her wrists. “Since when do you hurt yourself? I never seen any signs?”

The question stilled her movements. Rafe calling out her actions only highlighted them more, upping the stakes.

Because he potentially saw through her, she wanted to hide even more.

“I don’t know. It felt right in the moment.” Did she look as confused as she sounded? Another voice whispered not to say anything else so only she heard. “I shouldn’t mess with my magic. Once I push it, I kinda lose control of everything else.”

It’s not like she wanted to do it, or even consciously did. It’s like the brief flash of pain helped her get out of whatever fugue state fogged her brain and allowed her to be present, totally present. And not subdued like the feeling of watching her life behind that two-way glass seen in cop shows.

She’d viewed the discussion with Rafe, disconnected, and not able to directly interact.

“I need help.” She placed her hand over his. “I’m not feeling like myself.”

Her throat tightened, like an invisible claw squeezed until she could barely breathe, let alone say what she wanted to say. She tugged at her neck, gasping. Her vision blurred and tears streaked her face.

“Chey. Chey!” Rafe called out to her from a faraway tunnel. His voice echoed as if he called her from a distance.

The lack of oxygen caused her to be lightheaded, and she fell, back-back-back, without ever hitting the ground. His strong arms caught her.

“I’ve got you,” he murmured. “Everything’s going to be all right.”

She wanted to tell him that she loved him, and managed to squeeze his hand before losing all consciousness.

Now the problem is to not only find Meredith, but also prevent her from doing anymore harm.

Siblings, flirting, and sizzle with that touch of drama.

When we started 1001 Dark Nights back in 2014, it was with the goal of discovery—creating a way for readers to find new-to-them bestselling authors and fall in love with their stories and their worlds.

This year, we held a contest where romance authors could submit a short story to be included in a 1001 Dark Nights anthology, and we were blown away by the results. We received hundreds of entries, and while we wish we could include everyone, we’re thrilled to introduce you to these thirty-six incredible authors.

We hope you love the stories as much as we do. If so, we encourage you to check out the other books by these wonderful authors. Each and every one is unique and special.

Shadow Lover
Louisa Bacio

Toni had joined Carnevale to escape her parents and their choice to be her husband, Zoro. Zoro was the definition of evil, and she’s sure he’s killed all his previous wives. She would not be next.

Marco came to have his cards read by her, when she touches him for a closer look she’s thrown into a vision and throws him out.

The next day they meet up in public and the attraction is still there. For some reason she feels safe with him.

This is a favorite scene.

Hand on his chest, she pressed him into the darkened alleyway, marveling at his crisp features. He placed one hand on her waist, drawing her tightly against him. The other hand wound through her curls, cradling the back of her neck. He cast his eyes down, staring at her lips, and the moment stretched in time. Her breath hitched. Whatever was to come, her future would be forever altered.

Raising on tiptoe, she tilted her head and brushed her lips against his. Mouth against mouth, they let their lives seam together.

A hunger rose between them. Desire flamed from low in her belly and spread throughout. From this kiss, she imagined being with him, celebrating their union of bodies.

Something shifted, and the more they kissed, the more lightheaded she grew. His kisses felt like they possessed the power to suck her energy, along with her good sense. They broke the connection. She swayed.

“Whoa, hold on there.” Marco steadied her. “Maybe we should slow down.”

“Give me a moment.” Even to her own ears, her voice sounded drunk, floating in and out of volume.

“It’ll be all right.”

She focused on a point of light and watched as it grew smaller and smaller until everything went black.

And she felt herself falling.
Bacio, Louisa, Shadow Lover. 1001 Dark Nights Short Story Anthology 2020. 1001 Dark Nights Press. Kindle Locations (5706-5716). Kindle Edition.

Marco knows he needs to protect Toni, it’s more than just an urge. It’s something he has to do and is proven when Zoro shows up.

I loved this tale of shadow, light and love.

Exit Wounds
The Arsenal

Cara Carnes

Callista Yate’s husband Owen was MIA, the company he worked for wouldn’t send in a team to get him out. At her friend Kayla’s insistence, Callista Yates goes to the Arsenal accompanied by Boomer her guard dog. She wasn’t sure what her reception would be but she needed them to get her husband out of wherever he was. Time was running out.

This is a favorite scene.

The door behind Callista opened. Boomer shifted at her feet as a brunette and a tall man resembling Jesse entered. The latter knelt near the dog and smiled.

“Hi there, Boomer. You and I ran a couple of ops together.”

They had? Callista glanced down at the dog, who’d somehow become the focal point since her arrival. Fear clawed its way up her throat. “My husband was Army but left the service so he could be home more.”

For her.

“It’s always about what you want, Callista. What about me?”

“What about you?”

“We keep chipping away on my dreams to make this work between us. I’m not sure how much I have left to give.”

“Don’t say that.”

Owen turned and headed toward his truck. “We’ll talk when I get back. Maybe you’ll pull your head out of your ass by then and see I’m doing the best I can.”

Regret soured her stomach. The argument they’d had before he left for the mission recycled in her brain, an unwanted reminder that she’d put him in this situation. He never would’ve signed on with Jaxsun if she hadn’t demanded he leave the service.

“He contracted with Jaxsun after he left. Are they planning a retrieval?” the woman asked.

“No.” Callista pulled out the crumpled check from her pocket and tossed it on the table as the woman and man sat. “They knocked on my door less than a day after they received word of his capture and offered their condolences, along with this. Five thousand dollars dollars is the going rate for an operative’s life, in case you didn’t know.”

The two men regarded one another. Jesse fisted his hands while the other man cursed. The woman took the folder and shifted through the contents. From what Kayla had said, The Arsenal was the best private paramilitary organization around. They never failed on a mission.

“We have some money in savings, and I can get an emergency mortgage on our house. My friend said she could cover the rest of whatever your fee is.” Her eyes burned as she watched the three people rifle through the scraps of intel she’d accumulated. “Please. You’re his only hope.”

“Your friend is Kayla Dunn? Her father is a colonel.” The woman shut the folder and looked at Callista. “Why didn’t you involve him?”

“He’s plans D through F,” Callista replied.

Amusement flickered across Jesse’s face. “I’m curious to know what these plans were.”

“I’m thinking Callista isn’t leaving without a yes,” the second man commented. “I’m Dylan Mason. My five brothers and I run The Arsenal.”

Two of the five head honchos in the meeting was a good sign. Right? “I’d say it’s good to meet you, but this whole thing is a nightmare.”

Dylan’s gaze cut to the woman at the head of the table. “Is it doable?”

“Anything’s doable with enough time,” the woman answered as she looked to Jesse. “Levi’s team is already nearby. You ran their last op. Are they usable for this?”

Callista’s pulse quickened. Hope bubbled to the surface as she held her breath and awaited an answer. If they said no…

No wasn’t an option. Owen needed them.

She needed them.

“Even if they weren’t, they wouldn’t turn away from this,” Dylan commented. “It cuts too close to the bone for them, and for us.”

Tension thickened the air as the two men regarded one another. The woman broke the silence. “It’s your call, Jesse. I’m only here out of curiosity.”

“They’re mission ready. We’ll need to restock supplies, but that’s doable. Since Lexi’s with them, we’ll have an easier entry and exfil if we commandeer a helo.” Jesse thrummed his fingers on the table and glanced at Callista.

Relief and shock filled her. Was that a yes?

“Which plan is Boomer part of?” Jesse asked.

Damn. They’d put two and two together quickly. “C.”

“I’m missing something,” Dylan said.

“Kayla is on the top of Marshall’s acquisitions list,” the woman said. “I’m Mary, by the way. HERA alerted me when your background flagged her. We’ll do what we can to get Owen home. Maybe when this is over, she’ll finally answer Marshall’s phone calls.”

Tears streamed down Callista’s face. She wiped them away and nodded. “Thank you. I-I can’t say that enough.”

“Before we forget, this one’s on the house. We won’t charge to bring one of our own home.” Jesse stood. “I’ll have Ellie get you situated and show you around.”
Carnes, Cara, Exit Wounds. 1001 Dark Nights Short Story Anthology 2020. 1001 Dark Nights Press. Kindle Locations (1318-1356). Kindle Edition.

This is yet another example of how the Arsenal takes care of not only their own but other former military.

The reunion between Callista and Owen brought tears to my eyes, and I fell in love with Boomer too. He is a very special dog.

Love, Laughter, Tears and a Touch of Sizzle in this quick and satisfying read.

Some Day My Ranger Will Come

Jen Talty

Ella Cane really thought she knew what she was doing when she set out for the Black Park Island campground. Instead of finding it she ends up on a sandbar where Phillip Prince, the Ranger she really wanted to impress, found her.

This is a favorite scene.

The roar of an engine caught her attention. She glanced north and saw him heading her way.

Wonderful. Not how she wanted to see Philip for the first time on this trip. The entire idea had been to impress the hell out of him, not need him to save her. That would only perpetuate the concept that she was a high-maintenance female who only cared about her next mani-pedi.

She glanced at her toes and groaned. She was overdue.

“Looks like you’ve gotten yourself into a little bit of trouble.” Philip sat behind a steering wheel in a watercraft that looked like a blow-up toy with a motor. It reminded her of the tender on her father’s yacht that the deck crew used to taxi them back and forth from anchor to port.

“It’s just a little sandbar type thing. I can get out and push it and jump back in.” Yeah. She’d seen people do that on the private beach by her parents’ place all the time. It shouldn’t be too hard as long as Mr. Sexy Ranger Man stopped staring at her with amusement dancing in his teal-blue eyes.

“Ella, you don’t want to do that.” He shook his head. “The bottom isn’t like the beach. It’s more like quicksand. You’ll sink to your knees.”

She shivered. The only time she wanted to be caked in mud was at the spa.

“The mistake you made, besides passing the campgrounds a half-hour ago, was turning around back there. Had you just backed out, you would have been fine.”

Thanks for the lecture. “What do you suggest I do now? I’m supposed to go live to my followers…”—she glanced at her Apple Watch—“in a little over an hour. I’m doing a whole series on different parks and some of the history they have in our community, along with their great outdoor activities.”

He covered his mouth, and his shoulders moved up and down.

She scowled. “I don’t see what’s so funny.”

“I’m sorry.” He cleared his throat. “I’ve seen some of your YouTube videos, and camping on an island that you won’t be able to get off until the tide comes back in doesn’t seem like your cup of tea. Especially all alone. Unless we had some sort of holistic yoga healing studio with a juice bar.” He pointed to the sky. “And the storm’s rolling in.”

“Well, if you think that, you haven’t been watching enough of my live feeds.” She tilted her head. Dark clouds hovered a few miles away. The weather app mentioned it would most likely rain, but that was all supposed to happen north of Martin County. “That’s all moving out to sea.”

“If you say so,” Philip said. He maneuvered his boat, pushing his bow up against hers. “Hop on.” He held out his hand.

“What about all my stuff? The boat? We can’t just leave it here.”

“We’re not going to.” He patted the bench. “Think you can manage putting this in reverse and hang out in the open water over there while I unstick the rental?”

“Of course.” Instead of taking the help he offered, she stepped from her vessel. “Oh, shit.” She lunged forward, being flung into his arms. She dug her fingernails into his thick shoulders. “Well, hello, there.” He groaned, wrapping one arm around her and stretching out the other as he grabbed the steering wheel. His body twisted as his butt landed with a thud on the bench.
Talty, Jen. Some Day My Ranger Will Come. 1001 Dark Nights Short Story Anthology 2020. 1001 Dark Nights Press. Kindle Locations (3844-3867). Kindle Edition.

Ella struggles with even the simplest things as Phillip watches amused. He’s still wondering why she’s doing this but having seen some of her latest podcasts he wants to get to know the real Ella.

There’s more than one scene that has me laughing out loud and a twist in the weather that had me holding my breath.

A fast and fun read with a couple of twists and a touch of heat.

Prince of Seattle

Fiona Archer

Kayla met her boss Adam Justice at Gabriel Prince’s home. What she didn’t expect was for him to leave her there to go over the vetting information. She and Gabriel have history and she’s not sure she’s forgiven him for that humiliation so long ago.

Gabriel is more than aware of the mistake he made years ago, he had Adam to thank for her being here today.

This is a favorite scene.

After seeing Adam off, Gabriel closed the front door of his Vashon Island home as a gust of wind sent fallen leaves dancing about in the front circular driveway. On the horizon, heavy gray clouds filled the October sky, bringing with them the chaotic energy of an approaching storm. The atmosphere was charged, prevailing conditions changing at a moment’s notice.

Gabriel shook his head. Not unlike the situation he was in right now.

Kayla was here in his house.

Whatever fates had aligned to make this miracle possible, Gabriel was grateful.

There was one life truth that had been rammed into him over the last few years: If you ever had the chance to right a wrong, grab it—or her—with both hands, and don’t let go.

An unfamiliar tension tightened in his gut. Nervousness? For a man known for conquering any stated goal, the sensation was a sobering reminder of what was now at stake: getting back the woman he loved.

Walking back to his living area, he studied Kayla.

Her blonde hair fell in a thick, sleek sheet past her shoulder blades. Years ago, she often wore her hair up in a ponytail, especially during the summer. Having it down suited her. Her cashmere sweater showcased beautiful full breasts, and the navy skirt her rounded hips. How many times had he dreamed of running his hands over her supple body, undressing her, and discovering what drove her to beg for pleasure?

Gabriel gave a self-derisory snort. Christ, those thoughts were a pathway to hell he should dodge for now.

Kayla looked up, her hazel gaze narrowing and distrust radiating from her.

He deserved no better.

Six years ago, Gabriel had kept his promise to Max. Force Kayla away, keep her safe from the playboy Max had known him to be before he dated Kayla.

He could see Max’s logic. Twenty-two. In his first year working for the family firm. No way could Gabriel guarantee he wouldn’t end up breaking Kayla’s heart.

At the time, Gabriel had believed that, in turning her away, he was doing the right thing.

That decision had become his biggest regret.

“It’s already past eleven. We should get moving here.” A tiny frown creased Kayla’s brow.

His finger itched to smooth the wrinkle away. Instead, he slid his hands into the pockets of his jeans. “How about some coffee?”

At her hesitation, he reminded her, “We’ve got hours of work in front of us, Kayla.”

She pressed her lips together, as if weighing his suggestion before giving in. “You’re right. Coffee would be good.”

Taking her agreement as a victory, he poured two cups and added cream to hers.

As he set the mug in front of her, she thanked him with no reaction to him remembering how she took her coffee.

He sat opposite her. There was so much he wanted to say, which could set Kayla off like a bomb. For now, sticking to business was safer. “Where do you want to start?”
Archer, Fiona. Prince of Seattle. 1001 Dark Nights Short Story Anthology 2020. 1001 Dark Nights Press. Kindle Locations (2810-2832). Kindle Edition.

By the time they finished going over the files, the weather had changed and now Kayla is stuck in Gabriel’s home overnight. The storm had flooded the ford at the end of his driveway and the back exit was still blocked by fallen trees from the last storm.

Kayla’s boundaries come down and then go back up. Gabriel has much explaining to do if she’ll listen.

A fun and sensuous read.

An Alpha’s Fate

Lia Davis

Birchwood Pack Alpha, Logan Webb, watched Reagan walk out of his life over ten years ago. When she contacts him needing help, something in her voice puts his wolf in full protection mode. But seeing her in the flesh wakes a raw, primal desire long buried.

No. No. Bile rose, threatening to force Reagan’s lunch to make a gruesome return. The snow-white walls of her home closed in around her, and the air seemed colder. How had she not known?

Because they weren’t true mates. Even though they were bound together, their emotions and thoughts weren’t, not like they would have been if she’d mated with her fated mate.

She stared at the open journal as fury built inside her, putting her wolf further on edge. The names neatly handwritten in black ink blurred. For ten years, she’d done all she could to protect the wolves of Greenhedge; the least she could do after being forced to mate the male who’d become Alpha—a title rightfully hers. All her efforts were wasted. The bastard had sold packmates to a rogue Pack to be made into monster assassins in exchange for what? She didn’t know. She sure as hell didn’t see any extra money go into the run-down den.

Fucking power-hungry bastard.

The front door swung open, slamming into the wall. A low growl cut through her as she met the poor excuse of an Alpha’s stare. Lifting the journal, she shook it at him. “You lied to me.”

He stalked toward her, his eyes glowing with his wolf. “You are out of line, Mate.”

Was she? She thought not.

“My place is protecting my Pack from monsters like you.” Anger had all but consumed her. It was one thing to blackmail her into a loveless mating and slap her around, but to hurt her Pack?

Mason stopped before her, then gripped a handful of her hair, jerking her to him. Pain shot through her skull. She gritted her teeth and focused on his energy, his Alpha power. As his mate, she had the ability to use his strengths. Something he hadn’t realized she could do. Or maybe he thought she didn’t know how.

“You have crossed the line for the last time, asshole.”

He bared his teeth and flipped her so he could shove her torso against the desk. Her vision blinked out as her head hit the wood. When he started to tug her pants down, she roared and jerked her head up, slamming it into his nose.

Crying out, he released her and stumbled away a few steps. Not wasting time, she shifted into her wolf faster than she ever had before and lunged at him, tackling him to the ground. Her wolf had taken over, and for once the woman relished in it.

The thought that it was unfair to fight another while they were in human form was a whisper. One her wolf ignored. Mason Doyle had fucked over his last victim.

She struck, fast and hard, sinking her teeth into his neck. He bucked under her, but he was unable to shake her off. Adrenaline raced through her veins, fueling the rage. The animal wanted blood for all the innocents lost over the years. With a growl, she shook her head, tightening her hold until his body went limp and the mating bond broke.

Her breaths came in and out in deep waves as she slowly backed away. The taste of his blood coated her tongue. The wolf wanted to finish him, to revel in the kill, but there was no time. Someone was coming, and without the bond to the Pack she couldn’t tell who.

Alpha’s Mate

Louisa Bacio

With his tribe’s sworn enemy hunting him down, Hector must convince Kaitlyn that she’s his destiny – the only person able to revive the were-jaguar and legend of the Olmec — before it’s too late.

Prologue

“Someday, you’ll be queen, and save your tribe from extinction.” Kaitlyn’s grandmother placed a wrinkled hand over her own and squeezed tight. She exhaled her last breath with a raspy rattle and slipped into death’s sweet embrace.

Kaitlyn’s blonde hair covered her streaming tears as she leaned over her grandmother’s body – her heart torn between loss and the relief that cancer’s evil toll had finally ended.

She smoothed back the old woman’s thinning dark hair. She’d forever remember her Nana’s dying words but wouldn’t place much stock in them. Life might be different if she didn’t live in Seal Beach, California. There were no tribes here. She barely talked to anyone outside her own family or the kids she taught.

Queen of her tribe? Highly unlikely.

Chapter One

Warm hands pressed against his rock-hard abdomen, and the scent of the sea filled his senses, reminding him of standing on the cliffs and looking out into the great blue unknown. The air drew tightly into his lungs, and he shuddered, sending the dry foreign substance swirling from his arteries. So many years of nothingness, and suddenly, he was awake.

“No Shayla, don’t touch,” a soothing voice corrected. The muffled tones sounded like an ancient harvest song after a fresh rain. “You’re not supposed to touch the pretty statue.”

Please keep stroking me, he called out in his mind. Each caress fueled his being. There, a fingertip, ever so softly running over his arm. Small hands, followed by larger, softer ones. A mother and her child? His brothers teased him that he liked the non-traditional females. If a mother had woken him, he hoped she didn’t have a mate.

Only one of the chosen women of his tribe, or their descendents, could possibly wake a warrior. Although prophecies foretold this event, and the elders and his brothers had prepared for such an occasion, it was hard to fathom that the time had finally arrived.

He strained within his confines to see his savior, so he would know who to thank. But no, she stood to the side, and as she walked away all he glimpsed was light hair, the color of the sun’s rays. Later. There would be plenty of time to show his gratitude once he broke free from his stone prison. Now, it was only a matter of time, and he had plenty of that.

Enchanting the Sea Wolf

Kristal Hollis

A mermaid might fall in love with a wolf, but will they survive the dark forces bent on their mutual destruction.

Chapter 1

Sweltering heat rained down on the uninhabited island off Central Florida’s east coast. In wolfan form, Eason Stratton carefully padded through the expanse of slender pines and thickets of cabbage palms.

Having explored every inch of Coquina Cay since childhood, Eason knew where to leap, zig and zag to avoid injury. Today, however, he wasn’t alone.

“Not much of a paradise.” Chad Miller’s voice whispered through Eason’s mind.

Wahyas—an ancient species of wolf shifters, communicated telepathically with one another when in their wolfan forms.

“It’s a matter of perspective.” Eason glanced at his childhood friend, the brindle-colored wolf keeping pace with him. “Yours changed a long time ago.

“I suppose yours never will.” Chad’s wistfulness underscored the subtle tension growing between them over the last few weeks.

“This place is as much a part of me as my wolf.” Eason’s earliest memories were of picnics and fishing trips on the pristine beach with his grandfather, William, the previous Alpha of the Eau Gallie pack. “I could no more diverge myself from Coquina Cay than I could stop being Wahya.

“Except that you can. Being Wahya is genetic. Coming here is a choice.” Chad’s frustrated growl was expected. No one understood the maddening instinct that continually pulled Eason back to the island. Not even Eason himself.

“Did you tag along today just to pick a fight?” Eason halted. “Or is something else going on?”

Chad’s hard gaze dispelled any notion that the request to join Eason on the excursion was an attempt to smooth the rough patch they’d hit in their life-long friendship. “Yesterday, the marine patrol found a bow rider anchored offshore, and the boaters were trespassing on the beach.”

“Tourists, probably.” No one in Bellamar, the coastal town several nautical miles due west, would waste their time trekking out to the Eau Gallie pack’s private island which lacked the modern conveniences of running water and electricity.

“Well, they weren’t happy to get booted off,” Chad said telepathically. “In case they returned, I didn’t want you confronting them alone. Especially because the marine patrol suspects smugglers are making their way up the coast.”

“I can handle myself.”

“Can you?” Chad scoffed. “Because your head is always in the clouds.”

“My head has never been in the clouds.” Though Eason kept the snark from his thoughts, tension crept along his spine.

“Underwater, then.” Chad made no attempt to restrain his contempt. “Geezus, Eason. When will you grow up? You can’t play in the ocean for the rest of your life.”

“Why not? It’s my life and I intend to enjoy it.” For good measure, Eason added an air of flippancy to his thoughts.

“The pack needs a leader, not a beach bum.” With a rough snort, Chad darted back the way they’d come.

Alpha’s Fight

Christa Ann

Getting into an accident and crashing her Jeep wasn’t on her to do list. Now, she finds herself on pack territory and far from home. She didn’t expect to wake up inside an infirmary facing the Alpha.

Chapter 1

A tall man wearing camouflage came into view caring an automatic rifle. “Follow me.” he started walking back the way he came.

Carson’s voice boomed, “Who are you and where are you taking us? I want an explanation.” Being the alpha, he expected an answer.

Stopping, the stranger glanced over his shoulder to look at Carson. “You will be informed at the next stop. I don’t take orders from you, alpha. If you want the answers you seek, I suggest you follow me. Or you can go back to your pack. Your choice, make it.” He looked forward and continued on the path he started.

Logan came to stand beside Carson, “I don’t like this. You stay here alpha. If it’s safe, I’ll come back for you.”

“You all come, or no one will. That’s the only option.” The man never stopped moving.

“Let’s go, Logan. Just keep your eyes and ears open.” Carson shot a look at the man they followed. “Can I at least have your name?”

Glancing over his shoulder, “It’s Clay.”

Jag spoke for the first time. “I’ll cover the back, alpha.”

Carson took the lead with Logan following and Jag at the end, guarding their backs. He sent a message to both Logan and Jag. Remember, stay alert. I don’t like this, but we need answers. As they moved deeper into the forest Carson listened to small animals racing over leaves and twigs on the ground. The birds above resting on branches began calling to one another, alerting them of the predators. Suddenly, everything went silent and his shoulders stiffened. He heard sounds that shouldn’t be there. Footsteps not a part of their group shuffled, moving quietly but not silent enough.

At the same time Logan yelled, “Get down!”

Five men holding guns appeared out from every direction. They were all masked with camouflage in greens and browns. The one in front spoke, “Alpha. We’re only here to make sure no fighting starts and to escort you the rest of the way.” The unknown man emphasized the word ‘escort’.

How had he not scented them? They must be able to mask their scent somehow. Do either of you scent anything off? Both Logan and Jag shook their heads.

“You will need to give me more proof then just your word.” Carson growled out while in his crouched position, claws extended and ready to shift.

“Hello, old friend.” That came from a familiar voice he hasn’t heard in over five years.

“Decker? What the fuck?” The surprise evident in his voice.

Decker held his hand up to halt his questions, “Yes, it’s me. I had to ensure that you would come. Just follow me.”

“Why didn’t you just call me? Why all the sneaking around and what’s with the guns?” Carson retracted his claws and stood upright, stunned by who was behind all this.

Carson sent a silent message to his enforcers. Stay vigilant. Only members of his pack that completed the rights of section could send and receive telepathic messages, so their conversations were silent to outsiders.

When they came to the opening in the trees Carson stopped dead in his tracks at the military tent that had tables, chairs and equipment. But, what shocked him the most were the three other alphas standing there with guns trained on them. “What the fuck is going on?”

Marradith, Darkly

Lori Titus

In an alternate dimension, Marradith Ryder does not wear the white hat.
Instead, she was raised by Leighton to carry on one of the oldest of werewolf traditions; to become a Pack Mother, leader of a tribe of wolves. Will Marradith follow his orders? Or is she willing to destroy everything in her path to get what she wants?

Prologue

“I have taken back his soul,” Xia said.

“He gave it willingly?” Adam asked. “Without reservation?”

She glanced away from his face then. “I threatened his wife. He gave it up then.”

Adam shook his head. This simpleton child, for all the accolades their kind gave her, knew nothing. His experience in the reclamation of souls spanned millennia longer than her existence.

“You know that he comes from a long, and powerful line of warlocks, don’t you? Despite the contract, one must be careful. It’s been centuries since the agreement was first made, and his collection far overdue. If some slight thing were to go wrong, there’s just no telling…. I don’t suppose he spoke any words that you didn’t recognize? An incantation?”

“I know what I am doing,” she replied, trembling. A sound, like claws against a chalkboard, burst from her mouth. Blood tears spilled from her eyes. Adam drew back. He laughed. Her histrionics didn’t impress him.

“I have one question for you then,” Adam said. “If you’ve taken his soul, why hasn’t the body died? Don’t worry, Xia. I’ll find him.”

Part One

The wind blew. Cold crept into his flesh; he could not even shiver. His eyes were heavy. In the darkness, he barely saw a sliver of moon. There were trees above and a pristine, black sky. Closing his eyes, floating in the depth of a greater darkness, calm washed over him.

“Rafael, get up.”
A female voice seemed to echo from somewhere behind him. The voice was familiar, though he could not place it. It didn’t matter, he decided. Nothing did anymore.

“Rafi.”

The familiar nickname made him think of his wife. Fiona. Bright red hair and sky blue eyes. He cringed. Just as he remembered her name, she evaporated before his mind’s eye, a wisp of smoke and fancy.

“Damn you.”

The voice was closer now. Who was this woman? She seemed to be whispering in his ear. He felt the soft warmth of her breath against his cheek as she bent over him. There was a pause. She was moving around him now, carefully placing her steps in the snow. He could tell by the sound, the crunch as she moved. Then was a whoosh of sound. A boot connected to his ribs. He screamed as the pain shot through his side. He cried out, half cursing, half sobbing. A hot flush of liquid bubbled up from his stomach, acid burning his mouth.

“Fuck you!” he yelled, spitting, getting to his knees. His voice echoed back through the emptiness, the dead trees and their burden of snow.

A feminine giggle erupted into a full laugh. “You wish,” she said. “Get up.”

Alpha Untamed

Misha Carver

A small town, a lone wolf, a sexy waitress, and a crime ring. What could possibly go wrong?

Chapter One – Michael

“To a great week,” Jonathan shouted over the music as he clinked his beer bottle against mine, Bob’s, and Charlie’s.

Yeah, a great week, I thought to myself. It was the worst week of my entire life. I’d prosecuted six cases, and lost five of them. My days as a prominent lawyer were coming to a close if I couldn’t get back on top.

A five-year winning streak, and one week threatened to topple it all. My feet kept tapping on the floor, not so much to the loud music playing in the background, but more out of nervousness.

The guys, they all had a great week defending their cases against me and pulling ahead. A great week for them was a huge defeat for me, and yet there I was celebrating with them, just like they’d helped me celebrate each and every win along the way. It just felt so wrong. I never lost. NEVER. But I had, and I’d lost big.

“Ah, suck it up, Michael,” Charlie said as he took another sip from his bottle. “You can’t win every time.”

Charlie was such a schmuck. With his red hair, freckles, and big blue eyes, he appeared much more innocent than he was. Judges let him get away with countless courtroom antics because of his boyish good looks along with his ability to win almost any debate.

Wanna bet? I thought as I nodded my head in agreement with him. I didn’t have the energy to argue with an idiot.

“Buy me another beer, loser,” Bob said as he set his empty bottle down on the table and grinned.

Great, thanks for rubbing it in, I thought to myself as I motioned for the waitress to come over and grabbed a twenty out of my pocket. After the week I’d had, I didn’t need to be reminded of my failures.

Winter Blog Review

I really love this series. So many talented authors setting their stories in one place, the Black Hills.  We frequently see folks from the previous stories pop in which makes it interesting. In this one we see Ryker the pack enforcer briefly. You know, just to be sure things are on the up and up with the ‘interloper’.

In this book we meet Tala, a long time resident and Yas a returning wolf looking for his roots.

Tala is trying to start a Bed and Breakfast to accommodate returning pack members until they can fix up or rebuilt their homes. However she has been plagued with vandals causing more damage than she can keep up with.

Yas needs a place to stay and needs to work for his room and board. Boy did he come to the right place. There is a lot of neglect and damage done to this large house.

A favorite scene is when Tala brings him some cold lemonade while he is working on the deck outside.

“How’s it going out here?” She surveyed the work he’d done so far.

“Faster than I thought. When you work on a project, it can be easy or slow. With a newer covering, it might take longer to remove. This paint’s so old, it’s coming off like dust.”

The speckles on his arms and face reinforced his statement, and she stifled a laugh. “I can see that. Have you been frolicking through all that ‘dust’?”

“What?” He checked out his spotted arms. “Just what I need, to be even whiter than I already am. It should all come off in the shower.”

“Mmmm-hmmm, and you better get cleaned up first thing. I don’t want all that getting in the house.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He saluted and took a long draw of lemonade. His mouth puckered up, and his eyes crossed. “Wow. Sour.”

“I hope you’re exaggerating. It’s better than being too sweet.”

“Here, taste.” He stood, took another sip, and then pulled her tight to his body. The heat radiated off his skin, and he pressed his cool lips against hers.

Shocked by his actions, Tala didn’t react. She took in all the elements. The feel of his body. The enticing scent coming off his skin, appropriately like smoldering wood. Soon, she grew more aware of the weight of Yas’s arm on her waist and the insistence of his kiss.

She parted her mouth, tentatively touching her tongue along his bottom lip. He tasted tangy and refreshing. He deepened the kiss, drawing out her tongue, until they breathed the same air.

Everything changed with this one liplock. It was as if she’d never been kissed before, and never would feel this same way again. He, they, this moment became the center of her being. Everything else fell away.

The air between them made her realize the kiss had ended.

“So?” he asked, prodding her with more than his words.

She opened her eyes, recognizing a bit of mirth in his.

“How does it taste?”

She smacked her lips together. “Exactly how I like it.”
Bacio, Louisa. Claiming the She-Wolf: Black Hills Wolves Book 23 (Kindle Locations 441-459). Decadent Publishing. Kindle Edition.

Right from the start there is attraction and I love the way they interact. The sexy thoughts and trying to keep cool had me giggling.

I only wish there had been a bit more of the reason Yas traveled to Los Lobos. He didn’t really get much chance to ask anyone anything.

4 Contented Purrs for Louisa.
