The hat. The gun. And the will to protect.

Showing up to investigate a double homicide, Sheriff Phoenix Cade almost comes out of his boots when he sees the blonde–the only witness to the crime–covered in blood. He’d danced with her a few nights before and had every intention of getting her number until she threw up all over his shoes. Hell, his shoes would wash…

Ria Portman has spent the better part of six years convincing her family and friends that she could take care of herself. The accident took her sight, but it didn’t take her independence. There were a lot of things she’d learned over the years, especially regarding men. They said they could handle her disability, but truth was, they lied. When her assistant and client are murdered in her studio she will have to rely on one man—the one man who makes her want to trust again.

Phoenix is over his ex, but since he caught her cheating he’s compared relationships to playing with fire. It’s only a matter of time before a man gets burnt. Yet, Ria is different. She’s beautiful, smart, challenging, and doesn’t need him…even when she does. He should keep his head on straight because the killers want her dead and it’s his job to keep her safe. However, he’s realizing, a man in love becomes a giant. He’ll protect Ria with a force unlike any that has ever been seen before.

Winter Blog Review

One of my favorite things about this book is the heroine. She’s smart, tough, feisty and blind. Ria lost a fiancé because of her blindness, but not her ambition. She left the big city with her sister, to start over in her old family home.

When she meet Phoenix Cade, she doesn’t know he’s the sheriff every woman wants. All she knows is she attracted to him and she hopes never to run into him again after she embarrasses herself.

None of that seems important after two goons kill her assistant and a client at her home office. Saving herself by hiding on the shelf under her massage table, it was pure luck she wasn’t discovered and killed.

One of the things the bad guys don’t take into consideration is the acute senses of a blind person. Everything is more enhanced to make up for the lack of sight, so while she is unable to visually identify them she can give some definite insight into them.

This is a favorite scene.

“Don’t discount yourself as a witness. What you heard, smelled, the killers’ voices are all a part of the puzzle. You’re a bigger help than you can ever imagine, but I’d never put you in more danger to solve this case.”

“I’m glad to help, but…” her shoulders slumped.

“Go on,” he urged.

“Who can I trust?”

“You can trust me. I’ll keep you safe. I promise.”

Goosebumps popped up on her arms. Over the years she’d gotten skilled at listening to a person’s voice to understand their emotions and he seemed sincere. From what Kora had told her he had a reputation of being a hard-ass that got the job done. More than ever she needed someone like him on her side.

“Now, how about let’s get off the street. Okay?”

“I’ll go with you to the cabin, but I want to make it clear that I don’t want to take you away from your investigation. I don’t need a sitter.”

“Think of me less as a sitter and more of a bodyguard.” His light chuckle made her smile.
Rhonda Lee Carver. Protected By The Lawman: Lawmen of Wyoming, Book 1 (Kindle Locations 522-553).

The heat ratchets up a notch as Phoenix takes her into protective custody. His family cabin becomes the scene of their budding romance.

As the layers are pealed off this mystery, betrayal and heartbreak ensue.

Very well written with edge of your seat suspense, extremely hot make-out scenes and so much more.

Hell Yeah! Legacy – Letting Go Book 2 by Rhonda Lee Carver

One heart…two loves. Who will she choose?

What does a person do when they fall in love? They make a move, unless they’re eight. Loving Nann Fraley has been the story of Mac Sullivan’s life. Best friend and confidant, he’s been her shoulder, her rock, but no time has seemed like the right time to tell her his feelings. He can barely understand them himself.

Until he loses her to his brother.

Nann can’t think of a place she loves more than Sully Ranch. The horses have taken up residence inside her heart…along with Mac, but he’s too busy hobnobbing with the female flavor of the month falling at his dusty boots to notice Nann is all grown up. Moving on seems like the best thing to do, but tumbling into the arms of another Sullivan wasn’t part of the ‘moving on’ plan. It just happened, and she didn’t mean to start a Sullivan war.

Tragedy strikes and she loses both men.
After dedicating himself to a uniform, Mac is back in Kerrville, Texas and ready to take the helm at Sully…and ready to forget the one woman he can’t have. His plans are derailed when he learns Nann has kept a secret…one with the Sullivan ice-blue eyes and coal-black hair. Had he really believed he could sweep the night he’d spent with Nann six years ago under the rug? He has no clue how to be a daddy, but he swears he won’t lose everything he loves a second time around, that is if an outside source seeking revenge doesn’t foil his intentions.

Relationships don’t get more complicated than this one does. From Mac and Nann being best friends to her being engaged to his brother, to tragedy, to one night of heaven and that’s only the beginning.

That one night led to pregnancy and unable to get in touch with Mac, Nann takes on single motherhood.

Now Mac has returned from his hitch in the army. Back home to do what he loves, work the family ranch. Little does he know there is a big surprise waiting there for him.

This is a favorite scene, part of the confrontation between Mac and Nann.

Nann was afraid she’d throw up as she stepped inside of the Sullivan’s farmhouse. The second she was across the threshold she had a strong wave of memories. She’d spent so much time here.

“Come on in.”

She followed Mac into the kitchen and took a seat at the table, hiding her trembling hands in her lap. She caught a scent of jam and her stomach growled, reminding her she hadn’t eaten more than a bite or two in days. Sleep had been lost too. “You’re probably wondering why I’ve come out here.”

“No, not at all. What makes you think that?” He lifted a thick brow. He leaned against the counter and she believed it was a good thing. The more space between them the better.

“Okay, I understand you have a right to be angry with me, but we’re adults and we have to work together to do what’s best for Max.” Her heart fluttered.

“Does he know about me?”

She tucked a tendril of hair behind her ear. “I’ve talked about you over the years, but it wasn’t until last night that I mentioned your name and told him you were here in town.”

“I have every right to see him, and be a part of his life.”

The gruffness in his voice made her shift. “I’m not saying you don’t.”

“Does he want to see me?”

“He wants a father. To him family means having two parents.”

“Although you’ve done a damn good job in trying to get him to believe something else.”

She stood. “Look, I didn’t come here to have you treat me poorly. We can let this go to our attorneys, but I came because I love my son. I want him to be happy.”

He tore a hand through his hair. “I’m still angry.”

“I understand.”

“No, I don’t think you do.”

To deny him those feelings wouldn’t be right, but she did want him to see that she hadn’t meant to hurt him, or anyone. “I thought you wanted nothing to do with me, or what we shared.”

He stiffened. “You were the one who left a sticky note with a bad excuse on the pillow. I was giving you your wish.”

“I was torn between you and Morgan— well, his memory and the guilt.”

“And you don’t think I’ve been torn too? You don’t think I feel guilt that I’m alive and he isn’t? You were supposed to marry him.”

Dark circles appeared under his eyes. She wanted to go to him, to comfort him, but she was afraid of where that would land her. “What are you wanting, Mac?”

He hesitated, his jaw growing tighter. “Do you really want to keep the attorneys out of this?” She nodded. “Then you and Max move out here to live at Sully. This is home.”
Rhonda Carver. LegacyFinal (Kindle Locations 1113-1136).

The tale that ensues, involves more than just father and son getting to know one another, it entails Mac coming to terms with his feelings for Nann. Feelings he should have revealed years before.

Add to this issues with the ranch and you have a page turning tail of love, lust and so much more.

Winter Blog Review

Moon’s ex-husband cheated on her repeatedly. Now on her own working as a hand at Nirvana, she has proven herself more than capable to keep up with her male counterparts. The problem is they think of her as one of the guys. She is more than a little embarrassed when the doctor witnesses Jace’s rejection of her. A mistake on her part to begin with.

Cameron likes his busy life, Nirvana and the small local hospital have proven to be the change he needed. Like everyone else he sometimes needs to wind down a bit. Little did he know he would run into Moon. Moon is different than other women he’s known and he is more than a little attracted to her. This is a favorite scene the night after the encounter in the barn.

He’d realized earlier that he’d made the same stupid mistake that Jace did. He’d turned down her request to spend some time with him. Hell, what red-blooded, single man did such a thing?

Yeah, Cam was single. He looked down at his bare finger.

He swept his gaze back to Moon who was dropping coins into the slot. A soft tune floated from the speakers and before he could change his mind, he took off toward her and reached her just as she spun around, coming face to face with him. A slow smile drew up the corners of her beautiful lips. He didn’t say a word as he took her hand, smiling at her surprised expression, then he led her to the dance floor.

“Get a couple more beers in?” she asked.

“Nope.” He drew her against him, their bodies pressing against each other, heat nestling below his waist. “I came to my senses,” he whispered next to her ear. She smelled so good, felt even better. Everything around them faded as they moved against each other to the rhythmic tune of a familiar country song. “I’m a slow learner sometimes.”

She lifted her arms around his neck and drew her face back just enough so that she was looking up at him through the veil of her long lashes. “I don’t hold grudges.”

“Does that mean I’m forgiven for my lack of protocol in the barn?”

“What incident in the barn?” She laid her head on his shoulder and his breath hitched. Her soft curves swayed against his tight muscles, her legs brushing against his thighs, causing a rush of emotions behind his zipper.

Pressing his palm to the small of her back, he breathed in her scent— a lethal concoction of woman and seduction. He slowly walked his fingers up her spine, caressing each vertebrae as he moved, until he reached her neck. Threading his fingers in her hair he tested the satin smoothness of the tresses, before gliding the tips of his fingers along her slender nape and the baby soft hairs on her skin. Slipping his fingers against her scalp as he brushed his lips against the slender line of her neck. His body turned rock solid and he had to remind himself to breathe. “I’m glad I rethought things.”

“I am too. I thought I’d have to dance with the fellow who has the slicked back hair and the tattoo of his mom’s face on his chest.” He pulled back slightly. “What do you have against a man who loves his mom?”

“Not a thing, but can you imagine being with a man, making love, and having his mom’s face looking straight at you. A mood-stealer. Not that making love to him crossed my mind… but…”

He laughed. “Yeah, point taken.”

Their gazes connected and his throat tightened. He’d never wanted to kiss a woman more in his life. Truth was, he felt like he was back in college when he was the awkward teenager who couldn’t put two words together without announcing that his cock was hard. He was a bit unpolished when it came to attraction. He remembered what his nurse Maria said, “Just be yourself. That’s what a woman wants.”

“The song is ending, cowboy.” Moon stepped back, smiling, her eyes sparkling.

“Moon…?”

“Cam?”

Fuck! What did he want to say? “If you’ll excuse me, I need to run to the restroom and splash my face with cold water, or maybe dive into the ice bucket behind the bar.” He rubbed his hat down his head, resituating it low on his forehead.

Her laugh was the sweetest, most pleasant sound he’d heard in a long time. “I’ll meet you when you’re finished.”
Carver, Rhonda Lee; Carver, Rhonda Lee. A Perfect Cowboy Daddy (Cowboys of Nirvana Book 7) (Kindle Locations 647-682). Kindle Edition.

When a guest is attacked at the resort, something isn’t jiving. The guest is staying longer because of the investigation and is becoming a bit clingy in the friendship she’s established with Moon.

Cam and Moon are starting a relationship but she hasn’t stalled her plans to have a child without a man. Yes things are about to become complicated.

This one kept me guessing even as the sparks continued to fly between Cam and Moon. With her independent streak and his protectiveness all bets are off.

Winter Blog Blurb

As a girl, Ash James wanted a knight in shining armor to carry her away and together they would live happily-ever-after.

And then she grew up and waiting tables at a greasy diner blemished her fairy tales.

Her idea of a perfect prince matured and she had an appetite for alpha: sexy, muscled and scintillating. Declan Knight was everything she wanted—everything she found mysterious. When he walked—no, strutted—into her life she was ready to throw uncertainty, and her apron, out the window.

Her knight put a ring on her finger and whisked her away to the ‘castle’ where she settled in nicely, until she soon realized every prince can turn into a toad. Before long she was back wearing a faded uniform, living on tips and scrimping to get by. And keeping her sister out of trouble. Sometimes deadly trouble.

Fate has a plan and her name is Angelina Knight. How will Declan’s late sister play the role of fairy godmother? How will Declan save Ash from someone who is out to harm her?

Will Ash see that sometimes a toad just needs a kiss…a touch…and endless nights of passion to turn him back into a prince?

Winter Blog Review

Declan Knight has a problem, he needs a wife for his latest deal to go through. The problem is he already has one. He hadn’t seen her in five years but neither of them has sought a divorce.

Ash has worked hard these last five years, waitressing at the diner until she’s ready to drop and going to school to get her degree in social work. One more semester and she’d be done with her graduate work. Everything was finally falling into place, that is until her sister Ally came to her with yet another problem. This one financial and there was only one way to solve it, Declan. She never asked him for anything, but she hasn’t forgotten him either.

So to help her sister, she goes to ask Declan for the money. However, she didn’t expect to run from him without it. As she tries to figure out how to tell her sister she failed, there is a knock at her door. This is a favorite scene.

“What are you doing here?” she said through tight lips.

“Is that any way to treat your husband, bella?”

“How did you find me?”

“Google. Now can I come in?”

A long second floated by and he started to believe she’d turn him away, but then she pushed the door open farther with her bare foot and stepped aside so that he could pass. He stepped in and closed the door. The apartment was neat and tidy, and the rustic decorations were warm and welcoming. She stood in the middle of the living room, her arms crossed over her chest and her chin set in a curious tilt.

“You didn’t answer me. Why are you here?”

“Our conversation wasn’t through.”

“Oh, I think we both said enough.”

He sighed. “I had time to think after you left.” She tapped her toe in irritation. He smiled. “May I have a seat?” He pointed to the worn, flowered sofa.

She blinked. “Sure.”

He sat down and a spring popped up, poking him in the bottom. If he didn’t know better, he’d think she managed that on purpose.

“Will you sit also?”

Dropping her hands, she sat on the far corner of the couch. “Better?”

“Much.” He laid his palms on his thighs. “Answer one question. If I give you the money, you won’t be in harm’s way, right?”

She didn’t meet his stare. “I’m safe.”

“I think I’ve figured a way that we can both help each other.”

“By getting a divorce?”

One thin brow snapped up over her dark eyes.

“Hear me out. I’ve found myself in a bit of a situation. I need a wife.”

She jumped up. “I’m not sleeping with you for the money.”

“Sit down, bella. You have to hear me out.” He waved her down. Once she was seated again, he continued, “I have a business deal that requires companionship. I can explain the details later, if you agree, but my offer is that you spend the month with me, as my wife, and after thirty days I will grant you a divorce and we’ll call the thirty grand a settlement.”

She tucked her bottom lip between her teeth and nibbled, several expressions flitting across her face. “And what if I say no?”

“Then I’m filing for divorce and I’m keeping the thirty grand.”

“I thought you weren’t one to buy himself a wife?”

“Desperate measures call for desperate moves.”

“I need time to think this over.”

“You have five minutes to make a decision. Time is of utmost importance.” Hannigan was coming into town in a matter of days.

“Are you doing this to teach me a lesson?” Her soft voice made the hairs on his neck stand.

“I told you, I have a business deal that requires matrimony.”

“Should I believe you?”

“Ahh, and I should just hand over a wad of cash, no questions asked?” He snapped up a brow.

“I asked for a loan and I said I’ll pay interest.”

“And my offer makes much more sense.”

“Because it suits you.”

“It doesn’t suit you to act as my wife, as you already are, and walk away thirty grand richer?”

Her tongue came out and swept across her bottom lip. “Only thirty days?”
Carver, Rhonda Lee. His Weekend Wife (The KNIGHT Brothers Book 2) (Kindle Locations 1063-1096). Kindle Edition.

Oh what a tangled web, that unravels as this story progresses. From a complete makeover to the business deal, to letters from Declan’s sister.

An intricate love story that shouldn’t have ended to begin with. The attraction that still exists is more than sizzling. And the added intrigue of Ally and her boyfriend adds more than a little angst.

I really can’t wait for the next book in this series!

blurb-fall-cornucopia

A love is born from the flames…

What if you survived a car crash, but others didn’t? Would you carry guilt? Or be grateful that you survived?

For Brooke Winslow, she is faced with the demons of that tragic night when her world turned upside down. Until one cowboy steps into her life…

buy-links-fall-cornucopia

review-fall-cornucopia

I truly love seeing Sable Hunter’s McCoy family through the eyes of different authors.

In this book we meet a distant relative of the McCoy’s, Tuff (Ted) who works on Tebow Ranch but lives in the guest house on the Winslow farm. Together with his brother Danny and sister Chelsea they all helped out the owner Miss Beatrice when they could. Now she is gone and the fate of the farm and their home lies in the hands of her granddaughter.

Brooke survived an accident in which the person at fault and her daughter died. She has scars both inside and out most from the accident and one from after. Although she is in a better place now, she is still hiding from others and herself. She needs a change, even her doctor sees that.

That change comes in an unexpected way. Her grandmother Beatrice died leaving her the farm she has only childhood memories of. She always wondered why her grandmother never reached out to her. Now she was going back there but she is determined  not to stay. She’s going to fix up what needs to be fixed and sell the place.

There is an instant attraction between Brooke and Tuff but true to form Brooke fights it. She doesn’t want to get close to anyone, doesn’t want to reveal anything about herself. It’s a good thing Tuff is the persistent type.

Rhonda hits some sensitive issues in this one and handles them very well. The budding romance, her attitude toward owning the farm, and her interactions with Tuff’s siblings all become milestones.

A perfect example of why I absolutely love the McCoy’s and everything I read of Rhonda’s. The excerpt below contains a favorite scene, don’t forget to read it!

He hurried and dropped down on his knees beside her. “Sweetheart, are you okay?”

She didn’t answer him, just continued to stare.

“Oh shit!” He grabbed her up into his arms and easily carried her through the front door. He sat down with her in his lap on the rocker and cradled her close, her head tucked on his shoulder, her even breathing in his ear. He gently combed his fingers through her hair. “It’s okay, baby. You’re okay. The fire is out. You’re safe.” He kissed the top of her head, her forehead, her cheek, and quickly on the lips, tasting saltiness. He lifted her chin, seeing the moisture from tears. “Brooke, tell me what happened.”

Her bottom lip trembled and more tears fell. His heart jerked in realization that he couldn’t stay away from her if he tried. He was bound to her. She gave her head a jerky shake. “I-I can’t…”

“Yes, you can. You’re safe with me,” he whispered, massaging her neck to ease the tightness he felt there.

“The pan, it caught on fire…I don’t know…the flames. I tried to save her. I did.”

His gut twisted. They were no longer talking about the fire in the kitchen. “Tell me, baby.” He comforted her. “Tell me everything. I’m here.”

Summer My Review

I love this series, Nirvana is certainly somewhere I wish was real so I could vacation there. I mean really a beautiful working ranch resort, what’s not to like?

In this latest installment we meet Chase’s sister Felicia. Chase being all macho big brother, sets Dade to the task of keeping an eye on her to keep her out of trouble. Alas trouble seems to be Felicia’s middle name, she loves Cowboys, the real thing though. No make-believe dress up cowboys for her.

Dade is a real Cowboy in every sense of the word. If you’ve been reading this series you know that Dade is still recuperating from his injuries, but is slowing starting to work the ranch again. Keeping an eye on the boss’ sister shouldn’t be a problem.

This was a fun romp on Nirvana. Felicia really keeps Dade on his toes and needing to let loose a bit she locks him in a massage room and goes off to town. This is a favorite scene after Dade catches up with her.

“Relax, Dade. You look like you could spit nails. By the way, you need ice for the cheek.”

Her smile made him want to kiss her. He’d give a month’s wages just to have a chance to sample the cherry flavored lip tint again. “Nah, I’ll live. I’ve been stung harder by a bee.”

“Suit yourself, but you’re going to have a black eye.”

“I’m not worried about the black eye. Chase will do more than that once we get back to Nirvana.”

She laid a palm on her tilted hip. “We’re not doing anything wrong.”

“Let me list the issues.” He sat up and lifted one finger. “First, I’m supposed to be watching over you and making sure you don’t get into trouble. I failed. You managed to steal my clothes and leave me locked in a room. And just so you know, I’m still not over that. Two,” he held up another digit, “I left the ranch without telling anyone.”

She lifted a shoulder and let it drop. “So, we’re not prisoners.”

“I have the ranch truck and after Chase realizes we’re both missing, he’ll jump to conclusions like most older, protective brothers would. He’ll believe I took advantage of you.”

“Dade, you take advantage of me?” She laughed.

“I don’t think I like where you’re headed.”

“I’ll explain everything to Chase. If anything, he’ll be upset with me, but he’ll see that you were innocent in all of this.”
