Zola Carver has worked her entire life to get where she is—working as an assistant district attorney. She doesn’t have time for threats from a presumed terrorist group.

Mike Dorsen has made a life for himself, moving from foster care, to a master’s in biology, to the SEALs, and finally the FBI. When he gets an assignment from a clandestine faction of the CIA while on vacation, the last person he expects to have in his care is his high school girlfriend, Zola.

Unanswered questions haunt the childhood sweethearts as they reconnect. Their love has never faded, but will secrets held for over a decade tear them apart a second time?

While Zola and Mike run from a terrorist group intent on eliminating Zola, they must find their way back into each other’s hearts as easily as they found their way back into bed.

I totally got distracted by reading this awesome series. So much so that I didn’t stop to review them all.  With Silver Seals coming in the not so distant future, I thought I’d re-read and finish reviewing these now.

Mike Dorsen is the former SEAL Commander Lambert taps for this latest threat. He is on vacation from the FBI after a long and tedious investigation.

Zola is an Assistant DA who has put several terrorists behind bars for life. Her life has been threatened repeatedly but she has no clue about them. Her father, Senator Carver asked for her to be protected as these threats escalate. She also has history with Mike that goes back to when they were just kids.

Mike won’t trust anyone else with her protection and he hasn’t forgotten the gift she gave him all those years ago. He also hasn’t forgiven himself for cutting everything off.

This is a favorite scene after he convinces her to leave with him.

“I’m in the middle of a case,” she pointed out, her voice holding far less conviction than a minute ago.

“And I’m under the impression your boss, the district attorney, has been informed of your situation and is prepared to deal with your temporary absence from the office with the understanding you will continue to work remotely and check in twice daily. I got us a burner phone, and you can use my secure computer. You’ll need to leave yours behind in case they’re bugged.”

Mike had done his homework. He’d studied studied her file cover to cover. He’d spoken with Lambert early that morning and then again on his way to her condo.

Zola closed her eyes as she took another sip of her coffee. Finally, she set it down, seemingly resigned. “Fine. What’s the plan?”

Without flinching, he spoke. “I have a vacation home I’ve been renting for the month. We could return there if you’d like, or if you have another destination in mind, I’ll let go of my rental and we can make other plans.”

“Where?”

“Norfolk.”

“Virginia?”

“Is there another?” he teased, forcing a small smile.

She narrowed her gaze. “It’s just that it’s February. And it’s cold. You chose a beach property in the Northeast? Why not Florida or San Diego?”

Mike shrugged. “I don’t mind the cold. And I’m not the sort of person who needs to surf or lie in the sun. I just wanted peace and quiet for a month or two before taking my next assignment.”

“How long did that last?”

“Four days.”

She winced. “Shit. Bummer.”

“Is it?” He lifted a brow. The way he saw it currently, there was every possibility this working vacation wouldn’t suck at all. He was going to spend countless days with a woman he once loved more than himself. Unless she had undergone a drastic personality change, he intended to enjoy every moment of her company.

A slow smile spread across Zola’s face. “Jury’s still out on that one.”
Jameson, Becca. Saving Zola (Sleeper SEALs Book 4) (pp. 32-33). Becca Jameson Publishing. Kindle Edition.

There is plenty of action both in and out of the bedroom. These two have to come to terms with the past as well as their future, even though they are constantly on the run to evade the bad guys.

I loved that his go to contact is a former SEAL I happen to love, Tex (from Susan Stoker’s worlds). Even though Mike has Lambert and the CIA behind him, Tex always seems to get the right information a lot faster.

Fast paced, action packed and family drama with lots of sizzle to have you turning the pages.

Two people with primarily the same objective, to find who killed someone they cared about. In Michael’s case it’s his former teammate, in Mercy’s it’s her sister. The thing they have in common is the employer’s home.

Mercy with some misguided logic thinks that getting the job her sister had would give her answers the police haven’t.

For Michael it’s finding the reason who executed Sammy, and why the maid was involved.

This is a favorite scene when Mercy and Michael meet up in the rain, and he tries to warn her off.

“Do you want a ride back?”

She shook her head instinctively.

He gave a disgusted snort. “Yes, you do. You’re soaked to the skin. If you want to keep your job, you can’t afford to get sick.”

For a brief moment she thought about that being a lovely way to get out of her job. Obviously they wouldn’t keep her if she was sick. Not these people. A person who worked for them was just a number, and more numbers were easily found. She put a hand on the door handle and opened it, then hesitated.

He shook his head and said, “I’m not worried about the seats getting wet. Hop in, and let’s get you back to dry off.”

Without making a comment, she scrambled into the front seat and closed the door. Reaching for the seat belt, she buckled in. He pulled back onto the pavement of the deserted road.

“What are you doing out here anyway?”

“Getting some fresh air and leaving the oppression behind,” she said quietly. He shot her a curious glance.

“Is it that bad?” She nodded. “Yes, it is.”

“Time for a new job?” She stared at the gray skies, the rain now running heavily down the window, and muttered, “I don’t know.”

“Why did you take your sister’s place?”

She gasped. “What are you talking about?”

The look in his eyes made her realize he was no fool. She didn’t know what his role in this business was, but it was obvious he wouldn’t take any excuses.

She stared at her fingers for a long moment, then said, “My sister was murdered. I was hoping I could find out something about her last days. They don’t even have her belongings anymore.”

“Besides the utmost stupidity of your actions, did you ask the police for her belongings?”

She nodded and explained, “The detective said they hadn’t received anything of hers, but they did have Sammy’s belongings delivered by the estate. The detective did say he’d contact me if they found out anything new, but I haven’t heard from him yet.”

On that thought, she pulled out her phone from her pocket and checked for messages, but again there were none. But then, who else would contact her? Her mother was gone, now her sister too. Mercy only wanted to hear from the detective. Of course she wasn’t even on his priority list.

“And, if your sister was murdered, what makes you think you’d find any information here?” “It’s where she lived, where she worked. And maybe where she had a boyfriend, but I don’t know about that yet.” She looked at him. “You’re replacing a man who was murdered too.”

He nodded. “I know. But I didn’t have anything to do with either of the murders.”

“Neither did I.”

They came up to the gates of the estate, which were still open. He drove through and around to the back entrance to let her out. “Make sure you watch your back.”

She had the door open when she understood the gist of his words. She turned back to him. “Meaning?”

“Meaning, with two dead, a third won’t make any difference.”

With his cryptic words ringing in her ears, she hopped out and slammed the truck door. She didn’t know who he was, but he certainly didn’t appear to fit the role of whatever he’d taken on here.

Lt. Commander Keegan MacDonald has to face the fact his injury meant he was washed up as a SEAL, but who was he without the teams as part of his life? Even though he loved bikes, being a grease monkey at his uncle’s motorcycle shop sure wasn’t providing that answer.

When he gets a call for a special mission from the commander of a spec ops government contractor group, Keegan grabs onto the lifeline with both hands. Not only would he be helping find an intel leak which could jeopardize his teammates in the field, he might be able to find his own purpose during the mission too.

Keegan goes undercover at the Lily Pad, an off-base strip club where the government believes the special access intel is being passed, and quickly narrows down his suspects. The list includes Jules Lawson, a sexy, mouthy waitress who seems to have a hidden agenda.

When that agenda meshes with his own, and he finds out they are on the same team, but at opposite ends of the field, can they put together a partnership? Or will her inexperience and thirst for vengeance get them both killed?

Better yet, when the mission creeps into something much bigger than an intel leak, could he count on the beautiful agent to have his six while they saved the world? Or would she redefine his world in the process?

Oh my, SEALs everywhere! I totally got distracted by reading this awesome series. So much so that I didn’t stop to review them all. With Silver Seals coming in the not so distant future, I thought I’d re-read and finish reviewing these now.

In this one we pit our hero Keegan against what might be one of his own. As with most organizations, there has been a lack of communication and he finds that the waitress where he’s gone under cover has more skills than the normal everyday worker.

Jules on the other hand has much to prove. She joined the FBI after she lost her parents to the attack on 9/11. Now she wants to be a member of their counter-terrorism unit.

So far she hasn’t been successful, and having Keegan show up just pisses her off. Here is a favorite scene after their first shift together and Keegan finds out she’s a Fed.

“You’re not a good liar, Agent Lawson, but I’m glad we’re on the same team. Taking you off of my suspect list will make things easier.”

Blinding anger and knee-melting relief fought for pole position inside her as she released her pistol and zipped up her bag. She leaned over his plate to put her nose near his.

Your suspect list? This is my investigation, asshole. Just stand down and stay out of my way. Tell whoever you work for that I have this under control.” Her blinding anger now included her new boss for not letting her know another agent was being sent in.

“If you haven’t closed your investigation in three months, Natasha, the odds are you won’t. That’s probably why God sent me here,” he said, giving her a cocky grin that turned her on and pissed her off at the same time.

Now, he was making fun of her? Comparing her to a cartoon secret agent? And God? He really did think a lot of himself.

“You aren’t as badass as you seem to think you are, Boris. I had you pegged as some kind of operator when you walked through the door at the bar.” She stood to cross her arms over her chest. “Your little show to get hired didn’t impress or fool me one bit,” she said, although now, it really did, even though she didn’t want it to.

“I saved you from being mauled by a drunk—so you should be thanking me,” he said, picking up his fork.

“If you didn’t notice, I don’t need your help. I had things in hand,” she shot back, jerking her bag up to put the strap on her shoulder.

“No, it looked to me like the drunk had things firmly in hand, Natasha.” He winked at her before he shoveled a forkful of scrambled eggs into his mouth and she ground her teeth.

“Enjoy your breakfast, MacDonald. I hope you choke,” she hissed.

“Good luck with your research, Lawson. Maybe we can compare notes tomorrow night to see who gets more info.” The corner of his mouth curled and the bastard winked at her again, before he took a big bite out of his toast.

Jules left her breakfast behind to go home and text Brand to find out exactly who this asshole was and what he was doing in the middle of her investigation.

Dakota James’s life has become the stuff of nightmares. The leader of the Ansar al-Shari’a terrorist group has become obsessed with her, determined to take her as his wife. On the run, she’ll have to pin her hopes on the retired SEAL charged with finding and stopping Aziz Fourati before he can carry out plans to bomb more US airports.

Recently recruited to join a sleeper SEAL team tasked with fighting terrorism on US soil, Slade “Cutter” Cutsinger, with the help of some Special Forces friends, has located the one woman who can identify the deadly Ansar al-Shari’a leader. That was the easy part. Keeping her safe proves more difficult than anyone ever imagined.

When she and her new friend, Caroline, are kidnapped by the terrorist group, Dakota can only pray Cutter and the SEALs will reach them before they’re taken out of the country–and away from Cutter forever.

review-fall-cornucopia

Susan Stoker has joined up with many of my favorite authors to bring the Sleeper SEALs to life. I totally got distracted by reading this awesome series. So much so that I didn’t stop to review them all. With Silver Seals coming in the not so distant future, I thought I’d re-read and finish reviewing these now.

This first book brings to light a fear many of us have. That of domestic terrorists.

Dakota survives a domestic terror attack because the leader is attracted to her. She manages to escape him but is now on the run.

Recruited by the CIA to be a sleeper SEAL, Cutter’s first assignment is to find Dakota, get a description of the terrorist and protect her while they flush him out. His first stop on this journey is to her father. Skeptical as to his intent her father puts him through quite the test before revealing what he knows. Which isn’t very much at all.

With the aid of the postcards from her dad and some from Tex Slade finally locates her.

This is a favorite scene as he tries to convince her he’s not a bad guy.

Dakota nodded and cursed under her breath. She didn’t want to take her eyes from Slade’s, but she couldn’t find the stupid handle.

“I told you last night, but my name is Slade Cutsinger. I’m a retired Navy SEAL and I’m here to keep you safe.”

“Uh huh,” Dakota murmured, only partly listening. She found the handle, finally, and pulled, planning on getting the hell away from the huge man currently glaring at her.

“I talked to your dad the other day. I saw the postcards. It’s how I found you.”

Dakota froze with one foot on the hard dirt outside her vehicle and spun back around to face Slade. “He has nothing to do with this. Leave him alone,” she whispered shakily.

“I know he doesn’t,” Slade reassured her. “The postcards were a good idea, by the way. Your dad was sure you were doing okay, as was your intention. Unfortunately, a few people you gave them to got lazy and instead of waiting until they got home, mailed them from Vegas.”

“Darn,” Dakota said. She figured she might as well listen to what Slade had to say. Since he knew about the postcards, he most likely had seen her dad. She might be stupid, but she wasn’t getting scary vibes from Slade, so hopefully her dad was in his house secure in the knowledge his daughter was okay… even if she was on the run from a terrorist.

“I know all about the bombing in the airport, Dakota,” Slade said softly, bringing her out of her musings.

Dakota’s stomach cramped. He’d used her real name.

Of course he had. If he’d seen her dad, he had to know who she really was.

“I know you were the only survivor. I know that you saw Aziz Fourati, and I also know that you’re the only one in the world right now who can identify him. He also knows this, and not only wants to make sure you keep that information to yourself, but wants you for his own. To be his wife.”

Dakota shut her car door and shivered. Damn, it was cold. She tried to clear her foggy morning brain. She never functioned well before she’d had a cup of coffee. “His name is Aziz?”

She’d surprised him. Slade’s eyebrows went up and he tilted his head as he asked, “You didn’t know his name?”

“No. He never said it. What’s his last name again?” She was trying really hard not to freak out. Oh, she was leaving today for sure, but she needed to know what Slade knew before she bolted. Information was power.

“Fourati.”

“That sounds foreign,” Dakota observed, proud of herself for how calm she sounded.

“It is. Best guess is that he’s Tunisian.”

“Tunisian?” she asked, really confused now.

“Yeah, Tunisian. The country between Algeria and Libya in Northern Africa.”

“I know where Tunisia is,” Dakota answered grumpily. “I just…” She paused for a moment, realizing that she should definitely not be talking to Slade about anything. She didn’t know him. He could be one of Aziz Fourati’s goons. She was happy to have a name for the guy who was making her life a living hell, but she needed to be smart… no matter how much her intuition was screaming that she could trust the man next to her.

Slade leaned over and grabbed something off the floor at his feet. It was a metal travel cup. He offered it to her without a word.

Dakota stared at the cup, then back at him. If he thought she was going to drink something he gave her, he was insane. “No thank you,” she said politely.

“You don’t know what it is,” Slade said evenly.

“I don’t know who you are,” she returned a bit snarkily. “The only reason I’m still sitting in here right now is because it’s cold outside, and there’s nowhere for me to go. I’m sure if you wanted to, you could catch me in two-point-three seconds and slit my throat. Call me a glutton for punishment, but I’d like to get as much information as I can about why my life is in the crapper before I die.”

“You don’t swear.”

“What?”

“You don’t swear,” he repeated patiently.

Dakota shrugged. “I’m an elementary school principal. Or I was. I can’t exactly go around saying fuck, shit, and damn all the time.”

“True. I like it.”

“I can die happy,” Dakota grumped.

His voice lowered further, if that was even possible, and as much as she hated it, goosebumps broke out on her arms at his tone. “I’m one of the good guys, Dakota,” he told her. “The short story is that the government knows Fourati is behind the airport bombing and they want to make sure he’s punished for what he did. But now he’s gathering soldiers online. Trying to convert them to his cause. He wants to do it again, but on a grander scale this time.”

“I’m aware,” Dakota whispered, and she was. Aziz had bragged about his plans while she and the other hostages had huddled together, scared out of their minds in the airport.

“Then you know how important it is to stop him.”

“I almost died that day.” Dakota told him something he probably already knew.

He confirmed it by saying simply, “I know.”

“You can’t just show up out of the blue, tell me you’ve been looking for me, and expect me to trust you are who you say you are.”

“Why not?”

“What do you mean, why not?” Dakota asked, confused.

He continued to hold the cup out to her, but said, “I told you that I’d been to see your dad. I saw the postcards. I am a retired Navy SEAL. I’m not Tunisian and couldn’t pass for an Arabic terrorist on a good day. If I had cell reception, I’d call one of my best friends in the world and let him vouch for me. But that will have to wait until we’re back in civilization. I’m one of the good guys, Dakota. Swear to God.”

“That’s what a terrorist would say,” she informed him, not swayed in the least. “Besides, calling someone in order to vouch for your trustworthiness isn’t going to make me believe them.”

“Take the cup,” Slade ordered gently.

Without thought, Dakota obeyed his urgent words. She reached out and took the stainless-steel travel mug from him. Her fingers brushed his, and she swore she could feel the heat from his fingers shoot up her arm.

But no, it wasn’t his fingers that caused the heat, it was the mug. It was warm. She looked up in question.

“I stopped by the restaurant before coming here and asked Pat to warm up the contents for me.” He looked sheepish for a moment before saying, “I’m sure it doesn’t taste the best after two days, but your dad told me what you liked. He said you’d know I was telling the truth about talking to him if I brought this.”

Dakota slowly and carefully turned the plastic lid— and immediately the smell of peppermint wafted up to her nose. She closed her eyes in ecstasy and brought the mug closer to her face. She inhaled the delicious scent of her absolute favorite coffee in the world, and thought about all the times she and her dad had shared a cup of coffee like this while sitting in his small living room. She fought the tears that sprang to her eyes.

“And this,” Slade said softly, interrupting the memory.

Dakota opened her eyes and saw he was holding out a small white paper bag. She knew what was inside without having to look.

“A maple-iced donut,” she said.

“That’s right. Although I’m afraid it’s probably a bit worse for wear after being in my saddlebag on the back of my bike.”

Dakota reached out and snagged the bag from his fingertips, being careful not to touch him this time, and peered inside. Sure enough, the donut was mushed on one side and the maple icing was mostly stuck to the bag rather than on the pastry itself, but again, the memories that assailed her were almost overwhelming.

“You really did go see my dad.”

“I did.”

“And you swear you didn’t hurt him?”

Slade made a weird sound and Dakota’s gaze went to his. He looked pissed now. “No, I didn’t hurt him,” Slade growled. “I’m exactly who I’ve told you I am.”
Stoker, Susan; Sisters, Suspense. Protecting Dakota (Sleeper SEALs Book 1) (Kindle Locations 814-891). Kindle Edition.

In spite of all that Slade still had a ways go to gain her trust.

From here it is attraction, action and so much more. I love Dakota’s strength and persistence brought forth even more by her friendship with Caroline.

Don’t miss this book, it’s a new favorite. I can’t wait to re-read what the other authors contributed.

Winter Blog Review
