He thought his life was over.
She’s about to prove him wrong.

After the loss of his betrothed, battle-scarred warrior Errik has locked his heart away. All he wants to do is be the fearless, emotionless Vikingr he trained to be. He never wants to love again – until he meets Holly, who knows the pain of loss. But is that shared experience enough to bring them together? And when the future of his species is under threat, will the strain tear them apart or make them stronger?

review-fall-cornucopia

Errik is furious, his wishes have been ignored and his DNA was submitted for a match. He hasn’t gotten over losing his Kvenn and doesn’t want another mate. The first group of mates are due on the Valkyr and Njal is ordering him off with the others. The Peritan (Earth) woman would have a bit of time to adjust to being on the ship before being introduced to their matches.

Holly is a widowed teacher she’s ready to start living again and signed up with Hot Tatties because of the claim to find soulmates. Not that she really believed that nonsense, but she was ready to put herself out there again.

While most of the others in her group were scared or shocked Holly was curious. She has so many questions as she realizes they were indeed on a shuttle to a larger spaceship.

The crew that have mates in this group were watching as they arrived all of them excited and while understanding why things had to move slowly, anxious to actually meet with them. The men are in a house on Earth and while Steff introduces the women to their history and what to expect in the days to come.

They don’t see much until the following day when Steff introduces them to her mate Njal. She also explains the technology of the cameras that allow their mates to observe them from afar.

While Errik hasn’t read the information on his mate, one woman catches his eye. She’s not nervous or scared her curiosity is written all over her face. He’s a bit surprised when Njal informs him the woman who has caught his eye is indeed his mate.

Holly herself is just absorbing this new environment and is the first to want to meet her mate. They had special rooms set up, they were romantic settings and of course the interpretations of some things were funny, yet sweet.

Errik in spite of originally not wanting to have mate, has now fully embraced the fact that he has one and even before he meets Holly has begun the Fýst. Their time together is fun and informative for both but it’s the end of the time together that really gets interesting.

This is a favorite scene.

We talked for hours. The ship kept serving us more food and once we were full, drinks started appearing, most of them alcoholic. By the time I’d downed my third bright green cocktail – it tasted of bananas and blueberries, despite the colour – I was tipsy, giggly and didn’t want to ever leave this room again.

A knock on the door interrupted Errik’s story of how he’d single-handedly raided an entire container ship. Most of his tales had been full of violence and bluster, but I found them entertaining and surprisingly adorable.

“Come in!” I called, not surprised when Steff poked in her head.

“Hello, lovebirds. How’s it going?”

I exchanged a look with Errik. It was going fabulously. Better than any date I’d ever had. The agency’s matching technology had proved itself to be highly effective. Errik and I were matched perfectly. That wasn’t to say that we were the same, not in the slightest. I had no interest in war and battles, while he appreciated my insatiable curiosity and drive to learn, but didn’t have the same urge to know everything. His hobbies were working out, training and studying past battles, while I liked to be creative or go for long swims in the sea. On paper, we were nothing alike, but despite that, I felt a kindred spirit within him. It wasn’t just the shared experience of loss that connected us. It was so much more.

“Great,” was all I said. Steff’s knowing grin said she already understood. After all, she had her own Vikingr match. She had to know what it felt like.

“Errik, Njal says you’re needed back on Earth. You have another ten minutes to wrap this up, then I’m afraid your first date is over. You can meet again tomorrow – if you want, of course.”

“I do,” I said at the same time as Errik. I smiled at him with adoration while he flashed his pink teeth at me. Aye, we were perfectly matched.

“Holly, come see me once you’re done,” Steff said on the way out. “Don’t talk to the other women yet. I want to have a chat first.”

I nodded, but the door had already shut behind her.

“Ten minutes,” Errik mused. “How long is that in Vikingr time?”

It had to be all the alcohol that made me say, “Long enough for a kiss.”

Errik’s grin turned predatory. He was on his feet in an instant and then he was towering above me. Again, he had moved faster than my mind could comprehend. Steff had said nothing about superhuman speed, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t real.

Slowly, with a slight wobble I blamed the cocktails for, I stood up. I only reached to his collarbone – his blue, silky, muscle-surrounded collarbone. Some of my ovaries fainted at the sight. His eyes reflected the candlelight, sparkling like stars in the night. He wasn’t smiling anymore. His expression was serious, intense, hungry. He devoured me with his sweeping gaze until I couldn’t take it any longer.

“Do you feel it?” I whispered huskily.

He didn’t reply. Instead, he cupped my cheeks with his huge, calloused hands, before his lips met mine. The first few moments were sweet, gentle and strangely normal. A kiss that a human guy would give. But then he slung one arm around my waist, pressing me tightly against his hard body, and the kiss turned feral. All softness disappeared as he claimed my mouth. This was more what I’d been expecting. And I loved it.

He tasted like the sea, salty and wild, while his sandalwood scent filled my nose. His beard rubbed against my cheeks, but the hair was softer than it looked and didn’t chafe.

I got lost in the kiss, letting him plunder me with his demanding tongue. My body was screaming for more. My breasts were taught and heavy, my core throbbing with need. I could feel his erection between us, a hard rod of temptation. For a moment, I wondered what he looked like, but then a sharp, delicious pain on my bottom lip drew my attention. His vampire teeth must have grazed me. Unaware, he continued, and I saw no need to tell him. On the contrary, I wanted to feel that pain again. Wanted him to bite me. They did it during their wedding night, but maybe he could give me a little preview?

I didn’t recognise myself. This wasn’t vanilla-Holly. This was a seductive vixen slumbering deep within, only emerging now that she’d found her match. Following the urge to feel more of him, I ran my hands over his back, amazed how even there, he had planes of thick muscle. He was a beast, a warrior, and he was mine.

A knock on the door made us freeze for a heartbeat before we continued, our kiss turning more desperate. We were running out of time. And I never wanted to let go of Errik ever again. I clung to him, breathing in his alluring scent, feeling his hardness press against my body. I wanted more, needed more. Ten minutes were like a drop of water for someone dying of thirst. I couldn’t stop. Didn’t want to. And Errik seemed to feel the same. His tongue raided my mouth, his lips hard against mine, only occasionally lessening the pressure to breathe. One hand roamed over my back, while the other was tousled in my hair, holding my head in place as if he was scared I’d move away from him. As if. There was nothing that could make me leave. Nothing.

The door slid open behind us, but we ignored it. Didn’t listen when Steff shouted something. The world around us didn’t matter.

I was pulled away from Errik. I struggled against the grip around my waist, but then another set of hands clamped around my arms and pulled me back. Reality slowly drifted in, waking me from my blissful state. It took me a moment to realise what I was seeing. Three Vikingar warriors were restraining Errik, pushing him against a wall.

“What the fuck are you doing to him?!” I screamed, turning around to face my own attackers. Steff and Njal stood side by side, their faces grave.

“Let go of my mate,” Errik growled, fury lining his words.

Njal lifted his hands. “Not touching her. I am sorry, but we have an emergency. We need the two of you.”

The Book Boyfriend – Meet Cute Book Club Book 8 by Kate Stacy

Mila

I never thought I’d have a real-life meet cute, but the minute Crossland Parker walks into my life, it starts feeling like I’m living in the pages of a romance novel.

He sweeps me off my feet, and I find myself calling fast and hard for the rough around the edges mechanic. He’s a troubled bad boy with a heart of gold.

Cross fits into my life effortlessly, even sharing my love of books. He’s everything I didn’t know I wanted in a man. Attentive, sweet, a little bit possessive. He’s also my biggest source of support when I decide I want to buy the building next door so I can expand my business. So what if he has a criminal record? No one is perfect.

Unless you ask my stepfather. He expects nothing less than perfection, but not even I could ever come close.

Cross

After spending too many years wandering when I was released from prison, I came back to Abbott Ridge to start over.

I wasn’t expecting Mila Santos to fall into my arms, but I’m irrevocably drawn to the curvy little beauty who owns the bookstore. She’s a good girl, too good for a guy like me.

Our relationship develops faster than most, but I spent too many years of my life locked up. Now that I’m out, I refuse to waste a single second. I’m still not sure I deserve someone as sweet as Mila, but if she accepts me and all my faults, there’s no way I’m letting her go. Only a fucking fool would do that.

My past is no secret, and I knew the day would come when someone would try to use it against me. I just didn’t expect it to happen so soon.

Will the good girl get her happily ever after when she falls for the guy from the wrong side of the tracks?

Mila owns the bookstore in Abbott Ridge. She’s engrossed in paperwork when she realizes she’s late for her family dinner. An event her and her siblings attend for her mother’s sake. They can really do without Richard, the man their mother married. He seems to make her happy, so they deal. Even when he announces he’s running for mayor and wants them to attend some events.

Cross has just finished a tattoo session with Daphne when he first sees Mila. He doesn’t know who she is, but he’s definitely going to find a way to meet her. That happens in the perfect meet cute way. He saves her from a fall from a ladder in her bookstore.

From the first date you know these two are meant for each other, and of course there will be problems. Cross has been honest with Mila about his past right from the start, so she’s not surprised when someone brings it up.

I love the way this story unfolds, with laughter, tears, sizzle and some intrigue.

She’s fucking adorable.

Mila is still standing in the spot where I left her when I pass by the bookstore’s front window.

Grinning, I toss her a wink and keep walking, picturing the beautiful blush that stains her skin when she’s flustered.

I love how affected she is by me.

I knew Mila was gorgeous when I saw her from across the street yesterday, but up close… damn.

She’s a stunner.

Easily the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.

And I get to see her again on Friday.

I came to the bookstore today hoping to see her even though I knew there was a good chance that she wasn’t available, but I had to shoot my shot. I’m fucking relieved she isn’t with somebody. It would have sucked if I put myself out there only to find out I didn’t stand a chance. I’ll admit, part of me can’t believe she agreed to go out with me, but I’m happy she did.

Halfway back to the garage, reality sets in.

What was I even thinking going in there?

Mila is sweet as hell, far too good for a roughneck like me.

I’m a felon for fuck’s sake.

No. Fuck that.

My criminal record doesn’t define me.

I have to stop letting my past rule my life. I’m more than some guy who got locked up for trying to defend someone who didn’t deserve it. I paid the price for my mistakes. I did my time and now I need to move on.

I deserve happiness as much as anyone else.

As long as I’m honest and don’t try to hide it, Mila doesn’t seem like the type that would hold my past against me. I’ll be up front with her about it and let the chips fall where they may.

I’ve got a good feeling about her.

“Who’s the girl?” Bishop asks as I walk into the garage.

My brows dip low in confusion, and I look around the bay, not seeing anyone. “What girl?”

“The girl that put that goofy ass smile on your face,” he says with a knowing look. “Only a woman can make a man smile like that.”

I hadn’t realized I was smiling when I came in, but I feel one stretch across my face now.

“Her name is Mila.”

“From the bookstore?”

“You know her?” I ask, closing the distance between us.

“I know of her.”

At my look of surprise, Bishop rolls his eyes. “You said it yourself yesterday, Cross. Abbott Ridge is a small town.” He turns his attention back to the engine he’s working on. “Pass me that wrench.”

Knowing which one he wants without asking, I grab it and hand it over.

“The real question is…” He pauses to look at me. “How do you know her?”

Reaching behind me, I pull the book out of my back pocket.

Chuckling, Bishop shakes his head. “Should have known. Can’t believe you read that girly shit.”

“Don’t hate,” I tell him. “This girly shit just got me a date with perfection on Friday night.”

He eyes the book. “Well, hell. Maybe I need to pick up a new hobby. Mila’s a pretty girl.”

“Find your own pretty girl, Bish,” I say, popping him on the back of the head with the book. “Mila is mine.”

Fucker laughs. “It’s like that?”

“Damn right it’s like that.” I drop the book on top of the tool cabinet and grab a beer from the fridge. “I saw her yesterday when I was leaving the tattoo shop.”

“No doubt a gorgeous girl like that grabbed your attention.”

“Hell yeah. Would have talked to her yesterday, but she was on her way out. Almost got discouraged when I watched her drop into the passenger seat of a sweet ass ride but decided to take a chance anyway.”

“Black Chevelle?” he asks, glancing up.
“Yeah.”

He nods. “Her younger brother, Mateo.”

“Damn, Bish,” I say, dropping my ass onto a stool. “You really do know everyone in this town. Bet you got all the good gossip.”

Bishop snorts. “I ain’t got shit. Mateo spent a lot of time here. Rented one of the bays so he could restore that beauty of his. He had the know-how but needed somewhere to do the work.”

“I’d love to get my hands on that car.”

“Good luck with that. He won’t let anyone else work on it. Not even me.”

That makes me chuckle. “I respect that. Nothing more important to a man than his car.”

“And his girl,” he says, not so subtly turning the conversation back to Mila. “Where are you taking her?”

When they meet, their passion is UNSTOPPABLE.

That one hurt. Bruised the ego. He moved on—and I moved out. But, I’m no whining woman. I’ve got goals to crush, cases to win for the Invincibles, and other men to bed. All I need to do is take a deep breath and count to three. Or in this case, uno, dos, Tres. Meeting a hard-bodied, irresistible bouncer of Spanish descent just might chase away these blues.

TRES

review-fall-cornucopia

Ellison ‘Fury’ Storm former CIA and now Untouchables lawyer meets Tres the head bouncer at the Long Branch during a private party. The attraction is immediate, intense and I’m really surprised there wasn’t flames shooting out of my kindle with the heat and that’s just the beginning. These two enjoy a multitude of activities with plenty of sizzling scenes in between. After a dinner with Fury’s sister and parents Fury gets called to work. Vex’s brother is in need of a lawyer in Vegas. What she doesn’t expect is for Tres to accompany her.

This is a favorite scene.

I read through the report twice more, mentioning certain things contained in it to Tres. Nothing else was as significant as the gun.

Once we’d landed, I checked my phone, but I hadn’t received a response from Vex. Given I’d told him I’d let him know when we arrived, I called rather than send another message.

“Hey, Fury. I was just about to respond to your question. Sorry for the delay, but I was hoping to talk to my brother before I replied. I haven’t been able to, though.”

“Are you at the detention center now?” I asked.

“I am.” “I’ll head directly there.”

Vex thanked me before ending the call.

“I’m sorry about this,” I said to Tres. “You can check into the hotel if you’d like.”

He shook his head. “I would much prefer to accompany you.”

I found the discrepancies in this case increasingly troubling, so Tres would get no argument about going with me.

The seven-mile drive took over thirty minutes since there was no getting around the Las Vegas traffic— at least according to the driver of the car service. When I felt sure we’d been around the same block more than once, I squeezed Tres’ hand and looked out the window on my side of the car, then out the other. He squeezed mine after doing the same thing.

The next time the car stopped at a traffic light and we were four cars back from the intersection as well as in the middle lane, conveniently surrounded by semis, I saw Tres grip the door handle with one hand, while he grabbed both our bags with the other. When he opened the door and jumped out, I was right behind him.

We darted in and out of the stopped traffic, through one door of a coffeehouse, then out the other, then into a shopping center. Once I was certain we weren’t being followed, I called Vex.

“Where are you?” was the first thing he said when he answered my call. There was a frantic edge to his voice.

“Near the intersection of Charleston and Smith—”

“Do not attempt to come to the detention center,” he said before I had the chance to tell him about our strange experience.

“What’s going on, Vex?”

“There was an attempt on my brother’s life about thirty minutes ago. The entire place is on lockdown.”

“What’s his present condition?” I asked.

“He’s in the infirmary, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.”

“Vex, do you believe Kruger is safe where he is now?”

“I’m not certain.”

“I reviewed the arrest report, and there isn’t a single mention of the deadly weapon your brother was alleged to have in his possession. I’ve already begun preparing a motion to dismiss.”

“I need to get him the fuck out of Las Vegas.”

I concurred, but I wasn’t certain of the fastest way to make that happen, outside of him being taken into federal custody.

“Have you been in contact with McKenna Walsh?” The woman, whose code name was Scottie, had been undercover with Vex on a recent mission involving infiltrating the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas.

At the time of the mission, she’d been on loan from the Department of Homeland Security. I’d recently heard the FBI hired her out from under DHS. I knew from the hot wash— or after-action briefing— that prior to the FBI swooping in, Vex had been pushing for the Invincibles to make her an offer.

“She’s on her way as we speak. Or will be.”

I raised a brow, not that Vex could see me. “When is she scheduled to arrive?”

“I ended the call with her when yours came in. She said she’d get on the road as soon as she could. I doubt there will be a hearing this afternoon anyway. I’m sorry about this, Fury.”

“Nothing to apologize for. This is my job. Tell me, is her intention to have Kruger taken into FBI custody?”

“If she can make it happen.”

“Does she have the clout to do it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Understood. I’ll check in with Hammer and see what he recommends.”

I looked up and saw Tres was also on his phone. Maybe he’d called Hammer since he worked for him too.

“Where did you say you were?” Vex asked.

“Long story, but I have a feeling the driver of the car service that picked me up may have a connection to whoever tried to kill your brother.”

“Jesus,” he muttered under his breath.

“I’m going to work on finding somewhere else to stay. If my suspicions are right and the driver was intentionally trying to keep me from getting to the detention center, or worse, it means whoever he works for likely knows where we planned to stay as well.”

“We?”

“Someone came with me. His name is Tres.”

“Tres from the Long Branch?” Vex asked.

“Yes.”

Vex didn’t ask any more questions, and I didn’t offer any explanation.

By the time my call ended, Tres was off his.

“I have arranged for another place to stay,” he said.

“Okay. Um, thanks.”

“Someone I know will meet us here and take us to the house.”

“House?”

Tres nodded.

No one would dispute the fact I was a control freak. Including me. Having Tres by my side, though, made me feel safe. His quick thinking when we’d jumped out of the car had impressed me. While it was hard for me not to grill him about where we were staying or who was picking us up, I came to the realization I trusted him.

“What are you thinking, mi tormenta?”

“How glad I am you’re with me.”

His face broke into a broad smile. “Your saying so humbles me.”

It was the second time he’d said something to that effect, and it was another thing I liked about him. The list was rapidly growing.

“He’s here,” Tres said a few minutes later. He led me out a side entrance, where a black SUV with heavily tinted windows waited. “Meet my friend Alejandro,” he said after we climbed into the backseat.

“Please forgive me for not exiting the vehicle. It is a pleasure to meet you.”

The man’s accent was similar to Tres’, and while I wondered how they knew each other, I didn’t ask.

He’s an alien Viking.
She has no intentions of being his captive.

Njal enjoys the life of a ruthless Vikingr captain: eat, drink and pillage to his heart’s content. Then he and his crew of warriors get the worst possible news: their planet is destroyed.

If their species is to survive, they must claim females to breed offspring. Luckily, scientists at the Intergalactic University discovered that women on a backwater planet called Earth are compatible. And what does a Vikingr do once he’s found his mate? Right, he abducts her.

Steff is terrified of the huge blue alien who’s kidnapped her. He’s wild, loud, and has never heard of table manners. But is there pain and vulnerability behind his bluster? Perhaps she can help him and his men. Not by becoming his mate, no way. By adding them to the roster of her dating agency. Maybe he won’t hold her hostage if she finds him another bride…

Barnes and Noble logo_150 KoboLogo google_play_logo_002_002

The prologue of this book takes place two years prior when Njal the Bloodthirsty and his crew are stricken with the pain of the knowledge that their planet is gone and with it everyone and everything they’ve always known.

Hot Tatties Dating Agency is a success thanks to the Albyans. They’ve made sucessful matches and the native females are starting to wake. There is however an exclusive contract in place. As her day is winding down Steff gets a strange phone call asking if Peritans are compatible with him. She instructs the caller leave genetic sample with the Intergalactic University (IGU) to find out.

Njal secretly contacted the IGU and got a list of compatible species, the thing is although the Peritans are on it they were crossed off. Apparently, they are now under intergalactic protection. With IGU and Intergalactic Authority satellites orbiting the planet he knows they are breaking all sorts of laws but he doesn’t care. Njal has a purpose and he won’t be deterred or kept waiting, he’s going to kidnap a woman.

Steff is almost home after an exhausting day at Hot Tatties when she’s accosted by a man. The next thing she knows, she’s waking in a dark room. Realizing she’s been kidnapped she decides she’s not going to be a victim here. She’s going to get out of this. She’s also fortunate to have a translator implant.

This is a favorite scene.

He wore heavy combat boots, black as the night, the style completely at odds with his shirtless chest.   As if he’d been in battle and forgotten to put on his armour. Or used his naked torso to distract his enemies.

“Like what you see?” He grinned wolfishly. His lips were midnight blue, but the teeth flashing between were a pale pink. His incisors were too sharp for human standards. Did his species bite?

I looked him straight into his cobalt eyes, refusing to feel guilty for checking him out. A, don’t walk around half-naked if you don’t want to be stared at, and B, he’d abducted me and I had every right to observe who’d kidnapped me. Plus C, I had ovaries. No straight woman could look at this guy without feeling a slight flutter in her nether regions. He oozed masculinity.

“Who are you and why did you abduct me?” I demanded. “This planet is under the IGU’s protection.”

He seemed taken aback. “You know about the IGU? I thought Peritans didn’t know about life beyond their planet.”

I grinned at him, hoping to unsettle him with my display of confidence. I hoped he couldn’t see the slight tremble of my hands as I faced off my abductor.

“I deal with Albyans and the IGU on a daily basis. You chose the wrong woman to abduct. I repeat, why did you kidnap me and who the fuck are you?”

He pushed back his shoulders, all pride and bravado. “I am Njal the Bloodthirsty, captain of the Valkyr. I am a Vikingr – if you’ve heard of Albyans, I’m sure you’ll know of the great Vikingr race. We are feared and admired across the galaxy.”

Arrogant much? What an arse.

“Well, I’ve never heard of you. And if you have to give yourself a scary title, that’s only proof that you’re not as fearsome as you think. Now answer my bloody question before I get angry.”

My drama teacher would have been proud of my performance. Inside, I was scared shitless, but he didn’t have to know that. Once I was back home, I’d send my alma mater’s drama department some flowers.

Njal continued to grin at me, but his gaze had turned from curious to appreciative.

“Peritan females really are as strong as I’d hoped. That’s excellent news. The IGU scientists were sure that we’re compatible on a physical level, but a true Vikingr would never accept a soft female as their mate, even if he could breed her.”

Breed. The word echoed in my mind and I suddenly felt very cold. This wasn’t an alien like the Albyans – honourable, decent, kind. Albyans didn’t use words like breeding. They conducted sacred rituals as their version of marriage, which gave a human woman the same rights as her alien husband. Women weren’t seen as walking wombs like I’d heard other alien species treated their females.

Why couldn’t I have been abducted by a nice alien?

“You’re not going to breed me,” I hissed.

The door behind him was still ajar. I could try and run. But where to?

“Perfect,” Njal muttered, his gaze still roaming my body. “My crew will be pleased.”

Crew. Multiple aliens. He was going to give me to them.

My knees wobbled with fear, but I pushed past it. I had to show strength. So I ran at him and jammed my knee right up his crotch.
Skye MacKinnon. Vikingr (Kindle Locations 311-337). Peryton Press.

Steff’s first attempt at escape is thwarted by Njal and fortunately for him she had been heading in the direction of his cabin. He’s determined to get to know this female and see if they were compatible in ways other than just science.

I truly enjoyed the way this book plays out, there’s laughter, tears, frustration, sizzle and so much more!

I can’t wait to see what’s next in this series.

Love Storm

by
Sydney St. James

This anthology is huge
with many great stories.
I am reviewing just one of my favorites.

A wild magic storm is approaching as Kirra reflects on her best friend who left with three of the Demon Lords. She also knows that the storm signals the return of the three men who love and want her.

On board a ship about to dock in the harbor, Mundi, Tang and Leon are preparing to find Kirra. She is their mate yet refuses to accept them, in fact the last time they were here she told them never to return. They are truly hoping to persuade her otherwise this time.

This is a favorite scene.

They’re a bit like underwater peacocks. This isn’t the first time I’ve noticed. It’s just different this time. Or maybe I feel different.

One side of Mundi’s mouth hikes up. “Are they still making you do the same awful thing with your hair?”

I shrug. “Mistress likes it. It keeps it out of the way.”

Mundi shakes his head, takes my hand, and pulls me into the sitting room. “Leon, mind the kettle, will you?”

Tang is waiting for us in front of the fire. He’s already pushed my chairs back and thrown the pillows on the ground. They don’t much like human furniture.

Mundi sets a large pouch on the floor and kneels, muttering to himself.

Tang catches my hand and brings it to his lips for a kiss. “It’s the storm. You know what it does to us.”

I nod and decide to let it go. What use is it being angry with them when I only see them once a year, at most? This is the longest I’ve gone without seeing them since the beginning, and I don’t want to fight.

Mundi lowers to the carpet and smiles up at me. His pitch black eyes hold so much joy. I wish I could feel some of that.

He holds his hand up. “Kirra?”

“Why don’t I make you comfortable first, hm?” Tang asks at my shoulder.

“Wait. Tang!”

Before I can stop him, his claws have sliced through the ties holding my dress together. The material gapes and sags. I plant my hands on my hips and glare at him.

“Are you going to fix it?” I demand.

Tang grins back at me, and I see the pointed ends of his teeth. “I just did.”
Sydney St James. Love Storm – Dissent Edition (Kindle Locations 182-195). Inked Press.

Kirra doesn’t want to bring more of her kind into the world because of the sacrifice that occurs. Even after they explain what they have in mind, there is still the fear.

Plenty of sizzle on these pages and I am surprised my kindle hasn’t melted because of it.

That Ship Has Sailed: A Widow Romance – Love at Sea Book 2 By HM Thomas

That Ship Has Sailed: A Widow Romance
Love at Sea Book 2
By
H.M. Thomas

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Whoever said it was better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all, clearly had never lost their spouse.

Courtney Fowler was living proof of that.

After her husband’s death, she swore off love and relationships, too afraid of being hurt again.

Then her best friend tricks her into a singles cruise where Courtney runs into hotshot firefighter and snowboarder – Seth Mitchell.

With a dangerous job and the threat of one day never making it back home, Seth is everything Courtney has tried to avoid – and everything she secretly wants.

When they find themselves ditched by their friends, they decide to make the best of their time on the cruise ship and enjoy each other’s company – no strings attached.

But what happens when the cruise is over and it’s time to return to the real world? Can Seth teach Courtney to love again and convince her that together they’re worth the risk or has that ship sailed?

When Courtney agreed to come on this cruise with her best friend Ashley, she didn’t know it was a love themed one. Courtney is a widow, and really isn’t in the market for a new relationship. Little did she know Ashley already had plans with Zach and she’d be on her own.

Seth was interested in Courtney from the first moment he saw her, but he quickly realizes she may not be interested in him. He manages to make a couple of big blunders, but somehow manages to convince her to have some fun.

I love the way Courtney finally opens up to some fun adventures and how this relationship grows with each event and excursion.

Laughter, tears, romance and sizzle abound in this fun read.

I guess I just got peeved last night because I was kind of hoping you’d checked me off on your sheet, since you were the only woman I selected.”

The smile melted from her face.

Oh shit. What had he said wrong? “I’m sorry, I—”

“I threw my paper away.”

Of course she did, she’d only met overgrown man-children, she wouldn’t want her information being shared with any of them.

“I’m not on this cruise to meet anyone,” she continued, saving him from having to reply.

“Like I’ve said, Ashley didn’t tell me it was a singles cruise and then she signed us up for speed dating. I’m just . . . I was already bad at dating before, and now I just don’t even think I want to.”

“Especially since your only options are overgrown man-children?”

A pink blush worked its way up her neck. “Yes and no.”

He waited for her to elaborate.

She rolled her eyes. “I briefly considered the possibility of a . . . hookup. Though considered is probably too strong a word. Entertained might be better. Anyway, while at the speed dating, I wondered if I could be compatible with any of the men there.”

“And you found us all lacking?”

Another eye roll. “You’re not on the list, Seth.”

Shock coursed through him. So he wasn’t an overgrown man-child? He was worse? “I’m sorry, did you say I didn’t even make the not considered but entertained list of overgrown man-children?”

“No.” She shook her head. “I mean, yes.” She huffed out an exasperated breath. “I can’t hook up with you on a cruise.”

His mind went blank of all thought. Had she just said she couldn’t hookup with him? He could most readily assure her she could.

“Please explain,” he urged.

She sighed, causing her breasts to push against her strappy tank top. “Your friends with Zack which makes you sorta friends with Ashley. You don’t have vacation hookups with your friend’s friend.”

“You don’t?” Too bad no one had ever told him that, he probably could’ve saved himself a lot of trouble over the years. “Why not?”

“Because I might see you again. You can’t do the whole what happens on the ship stays on the ship with someone you might see off the ship.”

Fair point. “But why would it have to stay on the ship? Like what if it was so good, you wanted it to go off the ship?”

“Do you live in a rom-com, Seth? That doesn’t happen in real life. In real life, you have sex, and it gets messy. One person catches feelings and the other one doesn’t, or the sex is terrible but you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, or . . .”

“Or you’re a widow who isn’t quite ready and you don’t want to have to keep looking at
what you did?”

Her face fell and her mouth dropped open.

“Too close to the truth?”

“You don’t know me, Seth. I already told you that.”

He nodded. “But I’d like to.”

She opened her mouth to protest, so he picked up another strawberry and shoved it between her parted lips.

“I’m not saying I want to have sex with you, Courtney.” Though God knew he did. “I’m saying I’m not looking to meet anyone either, and it looks like our roommates have already paired up. Whether either of us like it or not, this is a cruise meant for couples. If we don’t pair up, fate will find someone to match us with.”

“I don’t think that’s fate. I think it’s just the cruise directors.”

He spared her a blank look. “We could hang out. Possibly enjoy each other’s company and have a great cruise.”

“Without flirting or having sex or any of that?”

He ground his teeth to keep from bursting her perfectly constructed bubble of denial.

“We won’t do anything you don’t want.”

Her gray eyes narrowed. Something told him that wasn’t the answer she’d been looking for. “Yes,” he clarified, hoping to ease her nerves. “We can hang out without anything romantic or sexual happening.” Though he knew if she didn’t want him, he could make it a lifetime without having sex with her, he highly doubted either of them could make it through the rest of this meal without flirting. Courtney wasn’t as outgoing as Ashley, but her subtle teasing and sweet smile were as effective at getting his attention as any over the top gesture.

“Fine,” she huffed as if crying uncle. “I guess it would be nice to have someone to hang out with while Ashley’s tongue is shoved down Zack’s throat.”

Brody’s Beast – Terkel’s Team Book 7 by Dale Mayer

Brody’s Beast
Terkel’s Team Book 7
By
USA Today Bestselling Author
Dale Mayer

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

The journey back to consciousness hadn’t been fast or easy but, once awake, with weird images and voices in his head, Brody is all about getting back to the team and into the action. His senses are dulled, but, even then, he’s strong enough to know he has to leave the building where he’s been recuperating from the initial team accident. Not knowing any of the details doesn’t help, but it does mean trust is now the issue.

Clary came on board to help when Brody was lost on the ethers—and to help her sister, Cara, who had taken on more than she could handle with Rick’s care. And even though Clary had been forewarned as to how this type of connection could work, Clary didn’t expect it to work with her and her patient, Brody.

Having a healing pathway was one thing; … having a connection where you could hear thoughts, feel the same emotions, was quite another. And seeing how Brody fights to surmount the attacks on the team he loves so well only shows her how much more is possible—but not the event where she must test out her theory, … unless it’s to protect those she cares about.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 KoboLogo google_play_logo_002_002

Brody is finally waking up. It’s been a long journey for him, and he doesn’t really understand that he’s been in a coma. The most severely affected member of the team, Cara had been helping but lost him in the ethers while helping Rick. It’s been very draining for both Terk and her so now her twin sister Clary is helping. While Cara is a nurse, Clary is a doctor, as such she’s been in charge of Brody’s care.

Now that he’s awake he wants to be with the rest of the team. He’s surprised when he realizes Clary is the woman with Charles from MI6. After being shot at on the way to the complex of warehouses, there’s more of a conversation. Clary is connected to Brody in the same way Cara is connected to Rick. The problem is Clary can’t be sure Brody feels the same way about her. She’s had to restrict him and he’s not taking that well.

Apparently, Brody has problems accepting that his energy isn’t up to par. Withdrawing just her energy from him leaves him drained and exhausted.

This is a favorite scene.

“Just a recon.” Damon hopped up and headed toward the rear door.

“Yes, but much more intense, and they’re using some kind of technology to see who and what is in here,” Wade said.

Immediately Brody felt an attack on his senses. He instinctively sent up a shield surrounding the entire group.

Terk looked over at him and nodded. “Just remember to conserve your energy.”

“I can sense that this is not the main attack,” Brody told them.

“This will be something else,” Terk confirmed. “I think more along the lines of trying to sort out where we are and how to get in,” he muttered.

“But we can’t take the chance of your being wrong either,” Brody noted.

“No, we sure can’t,” Terk murmured. “So, if you’ve got something to add, please do so.”

Brody frowned at that. “I’m done eating, so I’ll go and set up a camouflage on the building itself.” And, with that, he turned and walked away. Almost immediately he sensed somebody beside him and realized that— for all his previous efforts to stay separate, which ended earlier today— Clary was now in the face of danger and right beside him. “It’s probably not a good idea to have you with me.”

“Yeah, probably not,” she agreed, “but what the hell? … It seems like there’s no point in arguing about it right now. We need to fend this off together.”

He looked over at her in surprise. “Does that mean you won’t shut me down?”

“I haven’t shut you down yet,” she corrected. “Don’t give me a reason to, and I won’t have to.”

He frowned at that. “So I guess taking away my energy doesn’t constitute the same thing to you?” he asked curiously, as they walked through to the computer room, then on toward the bedrooms.

“Absolutely not,” she snapped, “because I didn’t take away your energy. All I did was take away my energy. I just separated myself.”

He nodded. “So you said before. I just didn’t realize how much of your energy it took to keep me functioning.”

“Of course you didn’t. You’re stubborn.” She said it in such a way that there was no judgment, more like just stating a fact.

He burst out laughing. “Well, I guess I should be grateful for small mercies that you kept me going this long.”

“Yes, you should,” she replied, emphasizing every word. “Gratitude doesn’t appear to be part of your makeup.” She was staring him down now.

He frowned at that. “Wow. That was a direct hit.”

“Not even close,” she said, “but you have a lot more of those coming.”

He looked at her sharply. “Have I been such an asshole that I deserve it?”

“Not at all, just … stubborn. And because you’re stubborn and obnoxious, you’re not doing as well as you could be.”

He groaned. “It’s been a shock to realize that I wasn’t doing nearly as well as I thought,” he admitted. “And your separating action was a very effective lesson that I’m very sorry I had to learn the hard way. Look. I’ve never relied on anyone else but me. I didn’t wait because I was really hoping I was doing better.”

“You’re doing pretty amazing,” she noted, “but you don’t have a whole lot of room for anyone else in your life. That is making it a lot harder for you to absorb energy efficiently. You are wasting too much energy by stressing over things that aren’t important.”

She needed him to understand the ramifications. “When you’re upset, you block me out, so we have to find other ways to get that energy into your system, which is making me work harder. It makes it more difficult on me than it should be.”

He stopped outside his bedroom. “Seriously?”

She nodded. “Yes, seriously! Because you’re so determined to keep me out, you’re inadvertently blocking the energy that you desperately need.” She shook her head. “Like I said, you’re stubborn. But I’ve been dealing with stubborn and cranky patients for a long time. So, as much as you’re trying to be unique and different, the first at the forefront,” she quipped, “you’re really not.” And, with that, she opened up the door to his bedroom and looked back at him.

“Shall we?”

As Brody gains more understanding of the connection between him and Clary, she also teaches him ways to strengthen his abilities. Although she knows it will take both of them when push comes to shove.

I loved the way this unfolds, there has been so much growth within this group. It’s heartwarming, scary, romantic and sizzling too.

I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

There can be only one Alpha…

Killian Blackcrown knows there’s only one way to get out from under his father’s murderous rule: he must leave his pack. Abandoning his duties, he not only forfeits his birthright as Pack Master, he’s also leaving his brother in the hands of the madman. Meeting his fated mate is not part of the plan and Killian must find the power inside himself to not only rule his new pack, but to fight back against his father.

Lucian Blackcrown wants the Alpha role for himself and fighting his brother for it is the respectable thing to do. No Alpha just hands over the role of Pack Master and runs away unscathed. That is, until he meets his soul mate, the woman who makes him second-guess everything. She’s the only person he can trust with his darkness, but will it drive a wedge between them?

The two brothers could use their wolf shifter strength and work together to take down the most vicious of monsters, but can they forgive each other and become the Alphas of their own packs?

NOTE:
*Trigger Warning: Violence, hints of sadism and masochism, various implements of torture and pain, united with fast-paced adventure and fast-burn romance, resulting in a binge-worthy read.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 KoboLogo google_play_logo_002_002

Killian Blackcrown wants nothing to do with his pack anymore. His father the Pack Master has ruled with fear and intimidation. Dominance fights are a regular thing, and the blood lust incites everyone. Everyone but him. He’s supposed to fight tonight, instead he shifts and leaves. His father disowning him as he flees leaving the position of heir to his brother Lucian. Killian has set up a cabin far from his pack, it’s here he will become a lone wolf, he wants no pack affiliation.

Cordelia Golden is the oldest daughter of the Pack Master. Her pack is a good one and her father has been a good leader. But he’s dying and trying to get her to mate for the sake of the pack. Cordelia doesn’t want to mate with any of her pack, no one attracts her and the one who wants to be Alpha is self-serving and determined to mate with her. After visiting with her ailing father, Cordelia makes the decision to leave and search for her true mate. Of course, her plan is a bit vague, in her wolf form she just keeps asking for this unknown entity to help her find him. When she scents someone different, she is concentrating on him and running at full speed, she literally runs into a tree. The impact is hard enough to injure her to the point of unconsciousness. It’s in this state that Killian finds her.

There is no doubt they are fated mates, but Killian has plenty of reasons not to want to be Alpha and Cordelia had plenty of reasons for him to become one.

This is a favorite scene.

They were connected, lovers, soul mates.

Top it off with the ability to talk to her about everything he was, how he was brought up, the brutality of his father, and everything that came with him…and she never once judged him for it. It was wonderful to have that with someone, to share, to know you have that one person who would be there, no matter what.

But in the back of Killian’s mind, he still wondered if this was what he was meant for? Was this what he wanted, to walk out of one pack and step into Alpha role in another?

He wasn’t meant for pack life. He wasn’t Alpha material. Even if Cordelia’s township recognized him as an Alpha the moment he stepped into town it wouldn’t sway his feelings one way or the other.

His father told him every day of his life that he was never going to be man enough to be Alpha of their pack.

“You’re too much of a pussy, son. You need to fight for what you want and kill anyone in your way. Even if that one person is me. This pack will never respect you. They’ll over throw you first chance they get. You’ll bring shame on yourself and this family. Hell, Lucian would be a better Alpha than you!”

He often told his father to give it to Lucian if he wanted it so bad. His brother salivated to lead, to become the Pack Leader. Lucian wanted this. Killian did not.

“Where’d you go just now?” Cordelia asked. She intertwined her fingers with his and leaned into his body.

He shook his head. “It’s nothing. Just getting in my own head space.”

“You know you can tell me, right?”

He nodded. “Yes, I know.” As they approached the outskirts of her village, he pulled her to a stop, then lowered his eyes to the ground. He kicked at a rock as he procrastinated telling her how he felt. How would she handle it? Would she be upset? Would she scold him? Would she tell him he was not worth the fight and she’d made a mistake?

“Killian,” she whispered. “I can barely hear your whispers. Whatever it is, we’ll face it together. We’re destined mates. I’ll always be by your side.”

“That’s just it,” he started, then met her gaze. Her bright blue eyes were warm and welcoming. She had a sincerity about her that broke his heart. She was so good and deserved so much more than what he could offer her.

“Tell me,” she whispered, and cupped his face. “Please.”

“You are so good. Your pack is strong and they respect your father. I come from Hell and my father is the Devil. I feel like a jerk coming into your life and thinking I could ever be an Alpha. It’s not me or in my nature.”

“Stop that right now, Killian Drake Blackcrown.”

He frowned. “I didn’t tell you my middle name.”

“I snooped,” she smirked. “Now, you listen to me. You are not your father, and thank fuck for that. You are also none of the things he said to you about never being good enough. You are enough, Killian. I just wish you could see yourself through my eyes and how much you’ll mean to this pack, and to me.”

“I feel like I’ve let you down. You came to find your mate and you got me instead.”

“Yeah, I got you,” she repeated. “And I’m damn proud of that fact. I’m proud of you. You left what you didn’t want, to do better for yourself. You didn’t want to bring what you know into the life of what you could have. I totally respect that. My father will as well.”

The pair stopped talking for a moment, then Cordelia spoke up once more. “I’m going to give you long enough to get out of your head and realize you’re an amazing man, partner, and mate. I know you’ve been to Hell and back, Killian, but you left. Leave your past behind you so you can appreciate what is coming. And trust me, it’ll be amazing.”

He offered a hint of a smile. This woman was truly a gift, and he didn’t deserve her, but he would fight through the rest of his life to earn her as a mate, as a lover, as a wife, and maybe someday soon, as the mother to his children.

“Okay,” he whispered.

“I’m sorry, I can’t hear you.”

He smirked. “Okay,” he said a little louder.

She nodded. “That’s what I thought you said. Now, let’s go and meet up with my father.”
Julie Morgan. Rise Of The Alpha: Books 1-3 (Kindle Locations 1521-1557). Kindle Edition.

Now this new development for the Golden Manes pack will be an adjustment. Killian hasn’t yet accepted the Alpha role but he is definitely Cordelia’s mate.

James McBeal will be the first one to start trouble. He’s wanted the Alpha role for all of his life, and he won’t have it taken from him. Or so he thinks.

Killian needs to make things right all around by formally withdrawing from his pack, then things go a bit haywire.

So many things intertwine to culminate in quite the ending.

A story of love, with laughter, action, tears and sizzle.

5 Contented Purrs for Julie!

Killian’s intention when he left Cordelia and his new pack is to formally cut ties with his father what he finds instead is prison.

A messenger sent to the Golden Mane leaves no doubt that Cordelia and her sister Sophie must travel to Blackcrown territory to retrieve her mate and Alpha. They journey with two of their guards and when they are found by sentries they are surprised by their reception.

Killian’s father, Richard Blackcrown has pulled out all the stops, a huge feast is before them but still no sign of Killian. What unfolds is very interesting as Richard’s intent to have Killian fight to the death is thwarted by Killian himself.

An interesting development is Killian’s brother, Lucian and Cordelia’s sister Sarah. Although they haven’t quite realized what’s happening yet.

Richard doesn’t like to lose, so there’s got to be something else he has in mind. It just a matter of when.

Both Lucian and his father attend Killian and Cordelia’s wedding followed the next day by the Alpha ceremony. Lucian does find out his father’s plan, and it’s something Lucian wants no part of.

He’s getting closer to Sarah and wants to be Alpha with her by his side. This is confirmed even more during a tour of the pack territory with her.

She lifted a brow. “I’d like to hope I can since we’re kind of related now.”

“Don’t call me your brother. It will completely ruin the mood and what I have planned.”

She laughed, then covered her mouth. “Sorry, I didn’t mean—”

“Yes, you did,” he interrupted with a smile. “It was meant to be funny. Now, come with me.”

“If I want to live?” she added.

He shook his head with a grin. “Absolutely. You following me will depend on certain life and death.”

“Ooh, I like this game,” she teased.

Lucian led her between the buildings and the couple was then cloaked by the darkened shadows. He closed the space between them and Sarah back stepped until her back touched the wall behind her.

“What are you doing?” she asked with a smirk.

“Something I’ve wanted to do since I first saw you.” He felt himself falling into the pools of her eyes, as if she could see directly into his soul.

Would she run once she found out how horrible of a person he once was?

Would she give him a chance to see he’d changed his ways?

He would have to find out and run the course with Sarah.

He took her chin between his index and thumb and gently tilted her head up. Lucian lowered his mouth to hers and once their lips touched, a power surged through him unlike anything he’d ever experienced. He pressed harder against her body, his chest and pelvis pressed against hers. Then, Sarah placed the palms of her hands against his chest. Fear clinched his chest, but soon released when she didn’t push him away. Instead, she moved her arms up around his neck, pulling him ever so closer to her.

He tilted his head the other way and deepened their kiss, his tongue gliding across hers as a growl interrupted the silence. He pulled back just enough to look at her with a grin. “Was that you?”

She grinned and lowered her gaze to the ground. “Maybe?”

He tilted her head up once more. “Look at me. You’re beautiful and the fact I could make you growl by simply kissing you makes me believe there’s much more to you than meets the eye. And I, for one, am looking forward to getting to know you on a much deeper scale.”

She pressed her lips together. “I’m happy to hear that. And thank you for not embarrassing me.”

He touched her cheek with the back of his fingers. “I never would.”

“Good. So, let’s continue our tour before someone catches us making out in an alley.” She took his hand in hers and led them back into the sunlight.

Lucian grinned like a schoolboy with his first crush. His heart fluttered and all matters of evil and doom seemed to have disappeared into the abyss.

“I want to show you our town cemetery.”

“Wow, this went dark quick,” he teased.

She lifted her brow and glared at him. “Dark would be creating some kind of ritual over someone’s grave. I’m simply asking you to view land with me.”

“Right,” he started with a grin. “Let’s go then.”

Moments later, they walked through the entrance to “Golden Cemetery” park. She guided them through the burial ground, past a large oak tree, toward a large cement angel that overlooked a grave. She stood in front of it and let go of his hand. Sarah bent down and tugged at the weeds that grew around the headstone.

He lowered himself as well and looked upon the name.

Brady Caldwell Golden
Born 1948 Died 2020
Devoted father, brother, and son

“I wish you could have met him,” she whispered. “He was such a great father and leader for our people.”

Lucian studied the name and frowned. Memories surged through his mind of past fighters and… Brady Caldwell Golden. Brady Caldwell. Then, he remembered. He looked at Sarah.

“Your father was Brady Caldwell, the Alpha fighter?”

She nodded. “Once upon a moon years ago, before Cordelia and I were born. Hell, before he met our mother, may she rest in peace.”

Both of her parents were gone and her father was one of the greatest fighters he had read about. His father made mention of not wanting to tangle with the Caldwell fighter, but Richard had no idea the territory they were now on. Lucian planned to keep this piece of information in his back pocket for now.

“He was a fantastic fighter, one of the best, honestly, in my opinion.” The pair stood together and she reached for his hand once more. “He taught us just because you can kill doesn’t mean you should. Always err on the side of kindness. You know, give second chances.”

Her words ripped through his once blackened heart. It was as if a dark cloud hung over Lucian’s head, and it killed him to consider what he once wanted to plan. To take over as Alpha by destroying everything Killian loved.

He shook his head and closed his eyes. “Sarah,” he started, “there’s so much I need to tell you.”

“Shh,” she held her finger over his lips. “No, you don’t. I saw you in the beginning and I see you now, Lucian. You’re not the same man. I can see it and so can my sister.”

He opened his eyes to her and his brows rose. “You can? She can?”

Lucian also finds something to stop his father’s plans for Killian and his pack. Although it causes so much more to occur.

There’s plenty of intrigue, suspense and sizzle as this story unfolds.

Killian and Lucian take their father’s body back to the Blackthorn pack. Killian, now Pack Master of the Golden pack has no desire to acquire this one.

When Lucian traveled to the Golden territory for his brother’s wedding and subsequent Alpha ceremony, he was very much like his father. The members of his pack feared him and were sure he would keep the status quo once his father was gone. Now Lucian not only has to face the pack with what he’s done, he has to convince them he’s changed and there will be no more fights or intimidation.

He also has to come to terms with the darkness within him and win back his mate. Sarah, Killian’s sister-in-law has turned her back on her mate on learning Lucian had killed his father. It didn’t matter that he did it to save them all, or did it?

Killian and a very pregnant Cordelia travel to Lucian’s Alpha ceremony, only for her to go into labor. Sarah had chosen not to accompany them so now Lucian has to get her there for her sister.

This is a favorite scene.

It wasn’t long after the messenger picked her up, they were on the territory of the Blackcrown pack. Nervous energy flooded her and she cracked her knuckles, then her neck. The last time she was here, Killian was a prisoner and her and Lucian met for the first time.

She accused him of having penis envy, but even then, she knew he was her mate. She felt it the moment they looked into each other’s eyes.

The pain, the envy, the rage inside Lucian’s eyes melted away and it was replaced with warmth, longing, and desire. She felt it and knew he did as well.

As the driver parked the SUV, she stepped out and made her way toward the house. The driver carried her bag for her, even after Sarah insisted on carrying it herself at her home.

He knocked on the door and set her bag down. “I’ll wait here until the door—” was all he managed to get out before the door opened. “Right,” he started and took a step back. “I’ll leave you to it, then.”

“Thank you again,” Sarah told him and reached for her bag when a hand beat her to it.

“I’m glad you’re here,” Lucian told her and picked up her suitcase.

“Where’s my sister?” She didn’t look into his eyes. She couldn’t, for fear of succumbing to her hearts desire: Lucian.

“She’s inside with our doctor.” He opened the door fully and stepped to the side.

With a sigh, she crossed the threshold and pulled her gloves off, stuffing them into her coat pocket. She inhaled the scent of wood, musk, and everything that was Lucian. Tears burned her eyes and she blinked them away, but she couldn’t cover the ache she felt in her heart. She longed for Lucian, needing to touch him, feel him, to just inhale his scent and be near him.

But she wouldn’t allow herself the pleasure of it. No, she was here for Cordelia and her sister only.

Removing her jacket, she felt Lucian tug at the back of it.

“Don’t,” she started and turned to face him. Before she could stop herself, she looked into his eyes. And there it was, the connection, the pull of her mate, everything she’d been fighting against. It was crumbling down faster than she was ready for. She also noticed the dark bags under his eyes, the tiredness of his gaze, the slouch of his body. He was exhausted. It showed in his stance and the scruff that grew on his face.

“Sarah,” he started and took a step toward her.

“Lucian, don’t,” she whispered and closed her eyes. A single tear slid down her cheek and she quickly swiped it away. “Where is Cordelia?” At her words, she heard her sister scream out from a nearby room. Her eyes widened. “She’s in labor?”

Lucian nodded and set her suitcase on the floor. “I have her in a guest room with our doctor. Follow me, I’ll take you to her.” She removed her coat and laid it across the couch and followed Lucian. He was in a fitted long sleeved, black shirt with jeans and his boots. The pants hugged his ass and legs, and her mouth salivated for the man she had to keep her distance from. He knocked on the frame of the door and Killian turned toward the entrance.

“Sarah,” he started and Cordelia lifted her head. In the room with the married couple were two women. She assumed one was the doctor, the other a nurse.

“You’re here,” she cried and reached out a hand for Sarah.

She started into the room when Lucian grabbed her arm. “Can we please talk later?”

“Lucian, don’t,” she answered and placed her hand over his. She hesitated for a moment, then removed his grasp on her arm.

“I said it earlier, but I’ll say it again. I’m glad you’re here.”

She looked into his eyes once more. He was only a few inches from where she stood in the doorway. His scent invaded her and she became intoxicated with him. She looked to his lips, then back to his eyes.

“Later,” she whispered.

He offered a hint of a smile and Sarah rushed to her sister’s bedside.
Julie Morgan. Rise Of The Alpha: Books 1-3 (Kindle Locations 4904-4938). Kindle Edition.

With the birth of his nephew, Lucian has some time to win back his mate. If only he can get her to listen to him.

Sarah is conflicted, she knows that Lucian did what he had to do to protect her family and pack, but she still can’t reconcile that. She also knows that it’s dangerous to reject her mate. The pull is very strong, and she can’t deny she loves him. The question is can she accept all of him?

There are plenty of ups and downs as well as sizzling scenes in this book, along with some very telling revelations as this series winds to its conclusion.

Vanessa Jared’s Got a Man

Vanessa Jared, a 40-something divorcee, decided that the best way to pull herself out of their post-divorce slump was to form The Savvy, Sexy, Singles Club and start the “Do Me” portion of her and her friends’ lives.

But on the two year anniversary, a sexy sheriff shows up on Vanessa’s doorstep wanting her to help him keep his little sister from marrying her no-good ex. Vanessa is not down for this at all. She wants nothing to do with her ex…until she spots a photo of her ex’s new fiancee wearing her grandmother’s ring–which he clearly stole from her. So now it’s on. Vanessa is ready to take this trifling (fill-in-the-blank) down. What she does not expect is to fall in love along the way.

It’s time to make a change and who better than to help her than her friends Janae and Cree. The three of them comprise the Savvy, Sexy, Singles Club and it’s Vanessa’s turn to host their get together. As she’s locking up, a voice calls out to her using her married name, one she hasn’t used since her divorce two years ago. The Asian man approaching her is muscular and she should be uneasy but instead she feels more unnerved but not fearful. When he identifies himself as Michael Park, Sheriff of Monroe Hills in Pennsylvania, she immediately thinks of the friends she’s meeting, both of whom live there. However, that is not who he’s here to discuss, He wants to speak with her about her ex-husband Karl and on a personal level not a professional one.

It seems her ex-husband has convinced Michael’s sister, Cindy to marry him. She will ignore whatever Michael has to say thinking he’s just being overprotective. If Vanessa is there to prove Karl isn’t a widower and is scamming her, he has a chance to save Cindy a lot of pain and heartache. Vanessa doesn’t agree until she notices Cindy is wearing her grandmother’s ring. A ring that was awarded to her in the divorce.

That night Vanessa finally has the courage to admit to her two best friend the full extent of the abuse she was subjected to during her years with Karl. The telling of it and the support of her friends who would be close by firm her resolve to help Michael prevent this disastrous marriage.

Neither Vanessa nor Michael could foresee how the attraction between them would grow as the weather in the area causes a couple of things to happen. First Vanessa loses her reservation at the bed and breakfast then the weather would keep her there until Cindy could make it back to town.

I love the way this story unfolds. The romance and sizzle, the town, even the eventual confrontation is perfectly executed.

I look forward to reading more from this debut author.

Something in the Heir by Suzanne Enoch

Something in the Heir
By
NY Times & USA Today Bestselling Author
Suzanne Enoch

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Emmeline and William Pershing have enjoyed a perfectly convenient marriage for eight years. Their relationship is a seamless blend of their talents and goals. They’ve settled into separate, well-ordered lives beneath the same roof, and are content to stay that way—or so Emmeline thinks. And if William has secretly longed for a bit more from the woman he adores, he’s managed to be content with her supreme skills as a hostess and planner, which has helped him advance his career.

Then when Emmeline’s grandfather, the reclusive Duke of Welshire, summons them both for his birthday celebration and demands they bring their two little angelic children, William is stunned to discover that his very proper wife invented not one, but two heirs to fulfill the agreement for living at Winnover. But surely if Emmeline and William team up and borrow two cherubs to call their own, what could go wrong? Enter George, age 8, and Rose, 5—the two most unruly orphans in Britain.

As the insanity unfolds, their careful, professional arrangement takes some surprisingly intimate turns as well. Perhaps it takes a bit of madness to create the perfect happily ever after.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 KoboLogo

Winnover is Emmeline’s childhood home, a home that in order to keep she was supposed to deliver an heir. Instead, she has invented two children a son and a daughter to fulfil said contract. Unfortunately, the normally reclusive and unsociable Duke of Welchire has decided he wishes to have a family reunion to meet all these new additions to his family.

William Pershing has no idea that his wife has invented children in their marriage. Now with their home on the line they must find a solution to their dilemma. The best Emmeline could come up with is two orphans, she makes a deal with them to find them a good permanent home if they agree to learn everything necessary to pass as the Pershing’s children.

With lots of negotiation and more than a few giggles bargains are struck. All is going according to plan until the children’s older brother shows up. He has far more demands both of the Pershings and the children.

This is a delightful and funny read with just a touch of drama and the rekindling of a relationship.

“So James has promised to get Rose a puppy,” Emmie said, as Will chose a pair of fishing poles.

“He’s trying to make amends, I imagine, since George said they didn’t expect to see him again.”

“Even so. What if he decides he’s seen enough, and he bundles them off to God knows where?”

Will handed the poles to Edward. “I’m not certain he actually has a right to take them. I’ll send a few letters to solicitor friends, asking their opinions. Discreetly, of course.”

If Will was one thing, it was discreet. “Good. Until you hear from them, I intend to proceed as if nothing has changed except for the addition of one extremely inconvenient house guest.”

“I’d like to say it would be good for them all to be a family together, but I’m not so certain. And I hope my . . . distaste isn’t simply because we need George and Rose here. But yes, we need to continue seeking a family for them, until they tell us otherwise.” Hefting a bucket, Will took back the poles and headed for the kitchen door. “And now I’m off to talk about fish and gentlemanly behavior.”

Yes, that was good, proceeding as if nothing had altered. It hadn’t, yet, more or less. But promising a puppy to Rose—that was just underhanded. Emmie found Rose and Hannah in the morning room, and she leaned in. “Rose, I think you should begin with embroidering a rose. Hannah, will you help her choose thread colors? I’ll be back in just a moment.”

“Of course, ma’am.”

Emmie hurried outside and around the side of the house to the stable. A puppy. That was unfair. “Billet?” she called as she stepped inside the large building.

“Mrs. Pershing.” The head groom popped up from beside Willow in the mare’s stall.

“Billet, we are in need of two ponies,” she said, putting on her most confident smile. “Calm, suitable for George and Rose, and good-tempered. And we’ll need them today.”

“Today?” The groom squinted one blue eye. “That’s . . . Hmm. I’ve a prospect or two, I suppose. The beasties won’t come cheap if you want them now and already trained for children, though. The Hendersens’ve been looking to sell off their ponies and purchase some full-sized animals for their young ones.”

“Now is what matters. They’ve never ridden before, and I don’t want them terrified.” Or dreaming about a cottage full of puppies and eager to leave Winnover the moment their brother snapped his fingers. “If you purchase the animals from anyone we know, please make it clear the horses are for my visiting niece and nephew.”

With a nod he glanced past her toward the house. “Niece and nephew. As you say, ma’am.”

Yes, every additional lie made everything more complicated. But the children needed to be explained in a way that would not cause any gossip back in London. She’d managed it on paper for seven years, but actual children made the task trickier. And with the addition of James, it became nearly impossible. But these were the youngsters they’d chosen. And aside from keeping Winnover and Will’s employment intact, if ever any children deserved a chance at a better life, if was Rose and George Fletcher.

Susan Enoch

Suzanne was born in Southern California sometime in the latter half of the 20th century. In the way that some people are born knowing they want to be astronauts or cellists, Suzanne always knew she wanted to be a writer. Early dreams of becoming a zoologist and writing true stories about her adventures in Africa were crushed, however, after she viewed a television special about the world’s most poisonous snakes; she did NOT want to write about how she’d been bitten and lost a limb to a cobra. Thankfully at the same time the movie “Star Wars” premiered, and she realized that she could make up adventures and write about them, and not be eaten by deadly predators while doing research.

She dabbled in romantic fantasy writing for a year or two after graduating with a degree in English from the University of California, Irvine, until her affection for traditional Regency romances led her to write one for fun. After several encouraging rejections from publishers, she snared the interest of the world’s best and most patient literary agent, who advised her to revise the manuscript. This ultimately led to the publication of her first book, The Black Duke’s Prize, from Avon Books in the Spring of 1995. A second Regency, Angel’s Devil, followed that Fall.

When Avon folded its traditional Regency line, Suzanne was encouraged to try her hand at historical romance. As she remained keenly interested in England’s Regency period, she decided to attempt another manuscript set in that time. Lady Rogue hit the shelves in March of 1997. She wrote a total of 29 books for Avon, including two anthologies and a five-part contemporary series which received a pair of starred reviews from Publishers Weekly. One of those books, Twice the Temptation, was named one of the five best romances of the year by PW in 2007.

In 2002 her well-known love of all things “Star Wars” led to an invitation to appear on the E! channel in the television special “Star Wars: The Force Is Back”, where she discussed the romance in the movie series and ended up with more air time than George Lucas.

In 2010 Suzanne left Avon Books for St. Martin’s Press, where she continues to pen historical romance novels. Her 31st book, Taming an Impossible Rogue, is set to arrive in March 2012.

Suzanne is known for her humorous characters, sexy bad boys, and whip-sharp, witty dialogue. She currently resides in Placentia, California with several hundred guppies and various other tropical fish, and handful of very loud, spinach-loving finches. And her collection of action figures and statues from “Star Wars”, “Lord of the Rings”, “X-Men”, and “Pirates of the Caribbean”. Everybody needs some inspiration, after all.
