In Cabo San Lucas, Navy SEAL Carson “Beach-boy” Walsh is ready to live the good life. After surviving fifteen deployments in ten years, he bailed on the SEALs, figuring this cat had run out of lives. The only danger he faces now is choking on an oyster or drowning in beer–and then he meets her.

Gina Tripp is the Calamity Jane of bounty hunters, enjoying an unexpected vacation. She’s the stand-in for an absent groom on her girlfriend’s honeymoon in Cabo when she meets a cute guy with a nothing but sex on the beach in mind. As her luck would have it, her best friend winds up kidnapped, and Gina’s embroiled in a dangerous rescue that deepens her attraction to Carson.

Just when she thinks she can settle in and enjoy a few days of sin, an opportunity to prove herself to her boss lands in her lap. Now, she has her sights set on scoring a huge bounty–an ex-pat skip, hiding out in Mexico. What follows is a wild ride that leaves her feeling pretty relieved she hijacked a Navy SEAL to help her with the job.

**S*x on the Beach** is part of the Montana Bounty Hunter series. It is also in the SEALs in Paradise connected series. Each book can be read as standalone. They do not have cliff-hanger endings and do not have to be read in any particular order.

review-fall-cornucopia

This book closely intertwines with Hot SEAL, Salty Dog, and gives us the story from Carter and Gina’s point of view and goes beyond that into their hot and heavy relationship.

This is a favorite getting to know you scene.

Already, she was hyper-aware of his every move, his every change of expression. All he had to do was give her a steamy look, and her body was primed for sex.

The tension between them was palpable. Even walking toward the restaurant, the fine hairs on her arms lifted, pulled toward him as though he was a magnet. When he cupped her elbow to direct her toward a table, her nipples prickled instantly.

They placed their food orders then ordered drinks. She asked for a Sex on the Beach, and his mouth twitched.

“What?”

“You’re having my drink.”

“Your drink?”

He smiled. “You know, a lot of SEALs have names, handles, that they earn or their team members give them. I was on a team where we were named after our favorite drinks.”

She arched an eyebrow. “So, Sex on the Beach is yours?”

He shrugged. “Not my favorite. I prefer beer, but that was already taken. My buddies knew I loved my beach time, so they named me after the drink, shortening it to ‘Beach-boy’, because Sex on the Beach is a mouthful.”

“Guess that’s better than Trip,” she muttered.

He raised both dark blond eyebrows. “Why? That’s your name.”

“My name’s spelled with two Ps. They call me T-r-i-p.”

He blinked. “Why?”

She grimaced. “When I first started bounty hunting—”

“You’re a bounty hunter?” His teeth flashed white in his tanned face as he grinned.

“In training.” She rolled her eyes. “I’ve had a few…accidents.”

“Trip…? Nooo.” He pressed his lips together as though trying to stop another grin.

She wrinkled her nose. “Laugh all you want. My fellow hunters certainly have.”

Their food arrived, and Gina was glad for the interruption. They tucked into fish tacos with slices of salted avocado. As they ate, Carson regaled her with tales from some of his missions in the sandbox—the funny things that had happened as opposed to the grim.

Given her experiences in the Middle East, she knew he was glossing over some shit, but she let him because she enjoyed his humor. “So, you’re lucky, huh?” She shook her head. “Must have run out because you met me, the unluckiest bounty hunter ever. Did you lose your St. Christopher medal? I noticed you’re not wearing it.”

His eyes lost their sparkle. “I gave it to a friend. On my last mission, we were entering a house when an IED went off. I caught a large splinter of door in the back. His injury was worse. Thought for sure he was dead. Before they medevacked him, I gave him the medallion. Told him he could have my luck.”

She reached out and placed her hand over his. “Did he make it?”

“Yeah. Fractured skull. A TBI—traumatic brain injury. He was medically retired.” He gave her a small, tight smile. “Now, he gets to spend all his time with his wife and kids.”

“I’m sorry he was hurt.”

He shrugged. “Happens. A lot, actually.”

“So that was your last mission…?”

“Yeah, I got out. Handed in my papers the minute I got back to Coronado.
Devlin, Delilah. Hot SEAL, S*x on the Beach (SEALs in Paradise) (Kindle Locations 282-308). Kindle Edition.

These two are definitely made for each other and when Gina’s boss calls with an assignment, she enlists Carter’s help.

This book sizzles and has a few very tense moments, some laughs and is a page turner as these two try to define their relationship. I think I need to read the other Montana Bounty Hunters now.

review-fall-cornucopia

Taking a vacation in Cabo San Lucas before heading to Montana to join the Brotherhood Protectors, Chase Flannagan wakes up with a surprise. Not only is he not alone in bed, he has a ring on his left ring finger, and no recollection of the night. More than a little disconcerting for a SEAL.

Maggie Neil was jilted at the alter by a man selected for her by her father. She planned everything for the wedding including the honeymoon. Instead of having a groom, she has her bestfriend Gina with her to help heal the humiliation. She wakes with a strange man and holy crap a wedding ring and a license to prove it happened. Only problem she doesn’t remember a thing either.

The reactions of these two had me laughing even though she was threatening to scream and call hotel security.

This is a favorite scene when she finds the marriage license.

The sunlight shining through the window glanced off something bright on her ring finger.

“Good God, woman. You’re married,” Chase exclaimed, appalled that her presence in his bed went against one of his golden rules. Never bed a married woman. He leaped off her and the bed and stood a couple feet away, his hands held up in surrender. “I don’t know how you got into my room, but I don’t sleep with married women.”

Married?” She glanced at his hand and yanked the sheet up to cover her nakedness. “I’m not the married one here. You are.” She pointed to his ring finger. “You lying bastard. I pity the woman who married you. She has to have shit for brains.” Tucking the sheet firmly around her, the woman eased out of the bed. “Where have you put my clothes? Is that your game? Keeping me naked in your room because I can’t go running down the hallway in the nude?” She poked a finger at him. “Well, I have news for you, buddy. I don’t care if I have to run naked through town. I’m not staying here. You can’t keep me, and as soon as I can, I’m turning you in to the authorities.”

Chase lifted a bright red dress off the floor and held it up. “This belong to you?”

“My dress!” She grabbed for the dress and held it against her chest. Then her gaze shot to the dresser where a pair of stilettos had landed. She marched over to the dresser, snatched the shoes into her hand and stared down at the paper beneath them. “What the hell?” She dropped the shoes and grabbed the paper. “No, no, no. It can’t be. What the hell did you give me last night?” Shoving the paper into Chase’s face, she demanded, “Tell me this is some sort of sick joke.”

He took the document from her hand and glanced down at the words. They were written in Spanish with the English translation beneath. The paper was thick parchment with fancy scrollwork designs on the border. At the top of the page, it read Acta de Matrimonio, and beneath it, in English, were the words, Marriage Certificate.

Chase’s heart hit the pit of his belly as he skimmed the Spanish to find the signature scrawled at the bottom of the page: Chase Flannigan. Beside his name in neatly written cursive was the name, Maggie Neal.

He looked at the ring on his finger, and then glanced at her.

She stood with what appeared to be a photograph in her hand, staring down at the image, her face blanching a startling shade of white. Then she looked to him. “We’re married?” Her finger pointed from him back to herself, wrapped in the sheet. “You and me? Married?”
James, Elle. Hot SEAL, Salty Dog: A Brotherhood Protectors Crossover Novel (SEALs in Paradise) (pp. 6-8). Twisted Page Inc. Kindle Edition.

Now of course they immediately start thinking annulment, but there is a problem with that since they apparently consummated said marriage. Chase had been a confirmed bachelor, and this makes no sense at all to him. Why would he marry someone after knowing her only a few hours.

After a threat is texted to Gina’s phone from Maggie’s missing one, they head out to retrace their steps from the night before. In the process discovering the source is probably a cartel leader wanting Chase’s head. Of course Maggie’s father has to show up too.

We meet Carter a buddy who had retired before Chase, and see Trevor, his wife Lana, and others from the Brotherhood Protectors. Add in the introduction of the rest of the SEALs in this series, by their go to drinks.

Plenty of hold your breath scenes, a taste of Maggie’s strength and mettle, Chase’s inherent protection mode combined with plenty of laughs, tension and heat.

The wolf days of summer are here…

Meet Jake Danes of Hudson River—Lone Wolf, avid gamer, extreme sports enthusiast, and surfer. He’s spent the last two years roaming free, exploring the world and escaping the dark place his pack had become after betrayal and murder tore them apart. Sure, life changed back home, but Jake’s having way too much fun to return — riding the waves in Monterrey and living out of a van. It’s the perfect life, one he never wants to give up, no matter how many calls he’s fielding from his big brother…then he catches her scent.

Mimi Chase wanted one perfect year. Time away from pack politics and her mother’s matchmaking efforts. Ever since her big brother settled into mating with a healer, Mimi’s mom seems to have gone into overdrive—throwing her at every eligible male in the pack. Choosing to roam seemed the best option, and California the ideal location to get away from everything pack related. Her plans for art classes, yoga on the beach, maybe a cooking lesson or two while living a hippy dippy lifestyle are all she cares about…until another wolf butts into her every activity. Doesn’t he know the rules?

Lone Wolves aren’t supposed to form relationships, so why doesn’t he catch a hint? Worse, why isn’t she working harder to make sure he does?

review-fall-cornucopia

For two years Jake has been having the time of his life. Following the waves and working side jobs. But lately his brother Luc been hounding him to check in more.

Mimi asked Mason’s permission to roam for a year, to get away from her mother’s attempts at matchmaking. Now in California, she taking all kinds of classes to learn new things.

Jake comes across Mimi while surfing, she was doing her yoga on the beach. He was curious about the beautiful wolf and uses teasing to coerce her into going for coffee with him.

While there are many scenes that have me laughing, this one is a favorite.

“So, now I’m adorable?” She paused at the exit to check the oncoming traffic, then glanced at him. “Like poodle or a Pekinese.” Not laughing proved difficult. Returning her attention to the traffic, she floored the accelerator when she saw an opening and swung them back out onto the road. Jake’s frantic gripping offered even more entertainment than his appalled reaction.

“Holy crap, where did you learn to drive?” The words burst out of him.

“Evading the dog catcher 101.” She spotted the coffee stand she’d missed earlier, the coffee cup-shaped sign was a dead giveaway. Shifting gears, she slid into a spot as another car pulled into traffic. A perfect parallel parking job, another perk of her mini. Pulling the safety brake on, she killed the engine and glanced at her passenger. He had his mouth open and his lips moved, but no sound escaped. Smiling, she let herself out and waited outside the vehicle for him to recover.

It also helped that she wasn’t drowning in his scent out here, the ocean breeze vied with the land based one to clear her nose. She drew in a deep breath at the same moment he exited her car, and the wind ruffled his still damp hair. The man should smell like wet wolf, not sunshine, salt, coconut and woods. It seemed a weird, yet heady combination.

While California had its share of forests, they didn’t smell like home to her. The Hudson River wolf shouldn’t either. Jake squinted at her, cocking his head to the side much as he had when she’d found him squatting in front of her on the beach. It was a wholly innocent yet deceptively attractive pose that left a curious number of butterflies fluttering in her belly. “You’re not really mad about the gnaw comment, right?”

“No,” she said, letting him off the hook. Then again, maybe she shouldn’t. “I’ve always enjoyed being compared to toy canines because no one ever remarks on how short I am.”

His eyes widened a fraction, and she couldn’t help it. Her laughter burst free.

“Oh my God, you’re easy.” Clapping her hands together, she continued chuckling. “And now I really do want coffee.”

The relief overtaking him was practically palpable as he followed hot on her heels. A handful of people made up the line to the cart and more continued to drift in their direction. The scent of Arabica beans and sugar filled the air. “What do you want?” Jake glanced down at her, and it was looking down. The man was easily as tall as her brother, and Owen was over six feet.

From her five-foot vantage point, she couldn’t even argue for almost five foot one inch she usually tried for. “Just regular coffee is fine, though that looks good…” She pointed to the whipped cream laden mochaccino the woman at the front of the line carried away with her. “If it didn’t have way too much sugar.”

“So? It’s early, and if you want something sweet, you should have something sweet.” Jake pivoted when someone bumped her from behind. A man muttered an apology then left the line entirely.

Elbowing her erstwhile escort, she hissed in a sub vocal. “Don’t scare off the locals.”

“I’m not,” he replied, all relaxed and easygoing once more. “Just some people should watch where they are going.” He nodded as the line moved, but didn’t nudge her forward. It was a sweet gesture, one she liked even more than his earlier shaking out of the blanket. He didn’t give her a push or try to put a hand on her to guide her forward.

“Still, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.” Her mother said that all the time.

“Why the hell would you want to catch flies?” Jake made a face and she laughed. It was almost comical how he could go from fierce and sexy to goofball and sweet. If she were being honest, and she didn’t have to be…she actually preferred goofball.

“I don’t know. It was just something I heard when I was growing up. Be nice.” It was their turn, and Jake raised an eyebrow at her when she didn’t order immediately, but studied the menu instead. “Go ahead, I still need to decide.”

“Large latte,” he said, surprising her again. “Extra hot, no foam.”

“You got it, Jake.” The man greeted him by name. Apparently, Jake was a regular. It was her first time at this beach, so that explained why she hadn’t run into him before. “What would you like, little lady?”

“She prefers just Lady,” Jake told him. “I’ll be Tramp.”

Fighting the insane urge to laugh again, she forced her twitching lips to stay together. Then a snort escaped… and a second.
Heather Long. Wolf on Board (Kindle Locations 274-308). Kindle Edition.

All is not fun and games though. While perusing a bookstore Mimi encounters a female wolf and Jake intercepts her before she loses herself to her anger. Growling among the humans is frowned upon.

Mitch, who we met briefly in Snow Wolf, is their enforcer and on hearing Mimi’s report on the wolf decides Jake should stay with her, at least temporarily.

Mimi and Jake do lots of fun things as they get to know each other. I love the slow build of this relationship and the surprises that get thrown in that have me itching for more.

Mitch is the messenger that gives us a glimpse of the friendship and co-operation between Mason (Willow Bend) and Brett (Hudson River) taking these books to a whole new level!

Don’t miss this fun and game changing read!

Bear Essentials – Bears of Blackrock Book 1

Nicole moved to Blue Ridge to start over, without anyone judging her. She needs a job but it seems they all want a college degree that she doesn’t have. While enjoying a hazelnut mocha latte at Beary Sweets, she notices the three very large gorgeous men watching her. When one of them comes over to her table she really wasn’t in the mood to for male pranks and bets.

This is one of my favorite scenes.

Her heart hammered when he sat in the seat across from her and leaned over the table. When he spoke, his words came out as a husky, growl-like whisper. “Have dinner with me.”

Blinking, she tamped down the urge to touch him. What the hell was wrong with her? “I’m sorry, I don’t have dinner with strangers.”

The corners of his full mouth lifted. “Forgive me.” He offered her his hand. “I’m Trey Black.”

She flicked her gaze to the other two men at the front table. They stared at her and the handsome stranger as if eagerly waiting for Trey to score. Not today. All the fire inside her dissolved into a cool mist. She tucked her tablet into her tote and stood. “I’m not interested in middle school games. If you’d like, I can just give you my panties and save you the trouble. That way, you won’t look like a total loser in front of your friends.”

When she turned, he gripped her wrist. Electrified prickles raced up her arm, awakening the flame once again. “I don’t play games. I like you.”

She almost laughed. “You could have any woman you want. A perfect model-type. So forgive me if I don’t believe you.”

Snatching her wrist free from his grasp, she fled past his friends and out the door. Tears stung her eyes as she fumbled with her keys. Men were all the same. They said pretty words to get what they wanted, then tossed her aside like old shoes.

Never again. She’d die an old maid before giving her heart to another again.
Davis, Lia. Bear Essentials (BBW Bear Shifter Romance) (Bears of Blackrock Book 1) (Kindle Locations 65-77).After Glows.Kindle Edition.

I love the way Trey goes about trying to convince Nicole of her beauty. It’s a good thing she already knows a bit about the animals in the area, thanks to her BFF Connie.

This is a short eventful book with a bit of angst, some jealousy and a bunch of sizzling sex.

Bear Magick – Bears of Blackrock Book 2

Connie and Natalie (Trey’s mate) are best friends. Now visiting the den regularly, Connie has the suspicion that Anthony (Trey’s oldest brother) may be her mate.

Anthony really doesn’t want to face the fact that he has a mate close by, but his bear is telling him Connie is the one.

When Connie confronts a hunter in Blackrock territory, Anthony realizes he may not be able to hide the truth from her much longer.

Misunderstanding leads to Connie walking away from him only to find him ready to grovel for her forgiveness.

Anthony provides a make-up meal and although she acknowledges the whole mate thing she shows a lot of snarkiness too.

“Do you accept the mating?”

She held up a hand. “Not so fast, furball. Don’t put words in my mouth. I just said I know how this mating dance thing works. But I also know we don’t fully bond until I give my heart to you completely.”

He stared at her, one brow raised. “Furball?”

“Is that all you heard me say?”
Davis, Lia. Bear Magick (BBW Bear Shifter Romance) (Bears of Blackrock Book 2) (Kindle Locations 294-296).After Glows.Kindle Edition.

A lot of giggling from me as these two figure out the mating thing. Some hold your breath moments and some very hot sex.

A Perfect afternoon getaway read.

A Beary Sweet Holiday – Bears of Blackrock Book 3

Nothing says holiday like fresh baked goods, and lots of party foods. No one makes them better than Tiffany and when a storm threatens, she decides to move everything from Beary Sweets to her home. She doesn’t want the food to be stuck far away from the Winter Celebrations of Solstice and Matings.

In the process of moving things to the truck she spots the cake topper she thought she misplaced, out of her reach so she climbs up falls and breaks her ankle. Shouldn’t be too big a deal Holt will fix her up and she’ll be good as new.

Only Holt doesn’t do a quick heal and quickly finds himself recruited to help. All it takes is a kiss that he’s not sure how happened and he’s fleeing the scene. Leaving Tiffany feeling hurt and rejected thinking he doesn’t feel the mating pull.

That all changes the next day after completing the prep for the next day’s celebration. Tiffany’s Mom takes Kaylee off for the rest of the day, leaving Holt and Tiffany alone. Subtle they aren’t, but they are shifters after all.

This is a favorite scene.

Instead of picking up the crutch, he scooped her up in his arms and carried her to the sofa. “Want anything to eat?”“Yes, please. There are pre-portioned meals in the freezer.”

He frowned, not at all liking the idea of her dieting. “What for?”

Tiffany laughed. “I get so busy working on new recipes and with the day-to-day at the café, that when I settle down, I’m too tired to cook. So, once a week I cook all my meals for the week and freeze them.”

His cheeks heated with embarrassment. “I’m sorry…”

She pressed a finger to his lips and gave him a smile that made his pants uncomfortable. “Shush. Go warm us up something to eat.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Before he straightened, he leaned in and kissed her. Pleasure exploded across his senses. When their tongues touched, a shot of electrified energy blasted through him.

Reluctantly, he ended the kiss and pressed his forehead to hers. A soft sigh escaped Tiffany. “If you have no intentions to claim me as your mate, you need to leave.”

What? He drew back, confused, and stared into her blue gaze. “Trust me, I have every intention, but I thought you needed time. That we needed time to…I don’t know, date or something.”

She nibbled on her bottom lip briefly before replying. “Dating is for humans. We’ve known each other all my life, even became friends. There’s no one else I’d rather be mated to.”

He scooped her up and proceeded down the hall, thoughts of food forgotten.
Lia Davis. A Beary Sweet Holiday (Kindle Locations 285-297).After Glows.Kindle Edition.

Now we can’t have everything go smoothly even at the holidays so the storm has to throw some wrenches into the mix. Not enough to spoil the ceremonies but enough to cause some angst.

Lots of love, laughter and very few tears. A perfect holiday read.

Bear Marked – Bears of Blackrock Book 4

Ryan has known for a long time that Kaylee is his mate, but until he got rid of the demon mark from Adair, he couldn’t mate anyone. Now Adair is stepping up his game, he wants both his mates. Unfortunately he keeps going about things in the wrong way. Ryan still hates Adair for kidnapping his sister Tiffany, and now the Demon takes off with Kaylee.

This is a favorite scene after Ryan snatches Kaylee back.

A cool, gentle hand touched his arm. When he stopped and faced her, Kaylee cupped his cheek and rose on her toes. “I don’t need a protector. At least not one that wants to hide me.”

His muscles tensed and he opened his mouth to argue with her and remind her he was a bear-shifter. It was his job to protect his mate…only she couldn’t be his. Ever.

Before he got the words out, she pressed her lips to his. A fierce, primal need unraveled from deep within. He wrapped his arms around her, meshing her curves to him. Damn, she fit perfectly like his missing puzzle piece. And she tasted sweeter than his imagined. Honey and cinnamon. Holding her close, he slipped his tongue between her lips. A soft groan escaped her.

Much too soon, she broke the kiss. “I’ve wanted to do that since the first time I saw you.”

“What made you so sure I’d kiss you back?” He couldn’t help but tease her. The blush in her dimpled cheeks was his reward.

“I’ve known you for about seven years now. I’ve had some time to gather my courage.”

A chuckle rumbled out. Gazing into her dark blue eyes, he caressed her cheek with his knuckles. “He’s not going to let me out of the mating. Besides, right now he’s pretty pissed.”

Her sensual lips lifted. “He now has his sights on mating both of us.”

Ryan drew back slightly. “You know?”

“I think it has to do with the demon blood in my veins, but I know. I know you are mine. As is Adair.” Kaylee sighed and pressed a finger to his lips when he opened his mouth. “Don’t argue.”
Davis, Lia. Bear Marked (Bears of Blackrock Book 4) (Kindle Locations 171-186).After Glows.Kindle Edition.

review-fall-cornucopia

One of the things I absolutely love about this series is the continuity. I love seeing the characters from previous books as we meet new ones.

Gunnar is the oldest Hansen brother, he seems to have given up on women and in this book we find out why.

Suzannah Winslow is a family doctor, she has passed the requisites the board of the new Clinic in Prairie has set forth and has come to town to start work.

Neither of them realized who the other was until a rather volatile confrontation at the welcoming at Dottie’s diner. Yes Gunner and Suzannah have a history that could undermine the community efforts in one encounter.

A favorite scene is when Gunner goes to apologize after that first encounter.

Even if the woman who’d stolen his heart was back in his life. He wouldn’t make the same mistake again. But he would make things right, and convince her to stay. For Prairie.

He paused at the walk. A swing hung at one end of the porch, and just in front of the screen door, a red tricycle stood, abandoned. What drew him forward though, was the light spilling out from inside, providing a welcome glow in the fading light. Gunnar steeled himself. He could do this, even if the Missouri plates belonged to the dad. He was just here to ensure Dr. Winslow didn’t quit and leave the residents of Prairie high and dry. Nothing more. No need to bring up the past. Ask any one of the hundreds of questions that burned in his brain.

Before he could knock, a tiny thing, white blonde hair spilling out in waves from behind a pair of Batman glasses and wearing a homemade cape ran up to the screen and stopped, staring. “Are you a good guy or a bad guy?” she asked, voice high and pipy.

Everything inside Gunnar melted at the sight of her. Was this Suzannah’s child? He pushed back the wave of longing at what might have been, and smiled down at her. “That depends.” On so, so much. He was pretty certain Suzannah thought he was a bad guy, although for the life of him he couldn’t figure out why. She’d stood him up.

“Lulah.” A voice, not Suzannah’s, called sharply from within the house. “Is someone at the door?”

Lulah? His stomach hollowed. Had she named her daughter Talulah after all? His chest pinched in envy. Tiny ran off, bare feet slapping against the hardwood, and seconds later a woman bustled to the door, smile fading when she recognized him.

Gunnar cleared his throat and offered a conciliatory smile. “Iris? It’s Iris isn’t it?” He remembered her from Vegas, one of Suzannah’s best friends.

Her brown eyes snapped fire. “Don’t you think you’ve done enough damage already?”

His head snapped back as if he’d been slapped. “I’ve done enough damage? I’m not the guilty party here. I just want to make sure–” This was an exercise in futility. Arguing with Suzannah’s self-appointed gatekeeper would get him nowhere. “Look, can I please talk to her?”

Shooting him another glare, Iris turned and disappeared. Given the look on Iris’s face, he wouldn’t put it past her to make him wait as long as possible. But he could play this game, too. He’d wait all night if necessary. He wasn’t leaving without talking to Suzannah. One minute, two minutes. He retreated to the porch railing, taking a seat. After five minutes, he heard footsteps approaching. Suzannah eyed him warily from inside.

He held out his hands in supplication. “I swear, I won’t take long.”

“You have sixty seconds,” she said with a quiver in her voice.

Shit. Had he made her cry? Nothing made any sense, but if he only had sixty seconds, he had to act fast. “Please, don’t quit. Prairie needs you. If you quit, it’ll be months before we find another suitable candidate, and we need a doctor yesterday.” She didn’t move to shut the door, so he pressed on. “I’ll stay away. It’ll be like we never met.”

His chest wrenched at her grimace, but this was for the best. He’d drive to Manhattan for medical care if it kept her here for the community. After a long moment, she nodded brusquely. “I’ll stay,” she said in a low voice.

Gunnar let out the breath he’d been holding in a whoosh, but he didn’t feel relief. Only emptiness. And deep sorrow for a life that could have been. “Thank you.” He turned to go, but stopped at the steps, turning back around. “Your daughter,” he said in a strangled voice he didn’t recognize as his. “She’s adorable.” And more than anything, he wished she was his.

He spun on his boot heel and hurried down the walk before he made a fool of himself.
Layne, Tessa. Prairie Fever: Cowboys of the Flint Hills (Kindle Locations 349-379). Shady Lane Media. Kindle Edition.

From here things get way more complicated. Gunner does his best to stay away but when he’s injured he has no choice but to see her.

Major misunderstandings, a secret confessed, and a whole lot of making up and other events will keep you turning the pages.

Laughter, love, and some tears all combine to have me almost begging for the next book.

blurb-fall-cornucopia

Don’t miss the highly anticipated installment in the Wolves of Willow Bend as we travel north to one of the most secretive packs in the U.S.

Ranae is the youngest of the Buckleys and the only girl amongst three powerful male siblings. Her restlessness and dominant nature affected her every relationship within Willow Bend, not to mention testing the patience of her Alpha. Apprenticeship to the Hunters fed her desire for a purpose. When her Alpha and eldest brother ask her to undertake a mission to the Yukon territory, she’s thrilled at the opportunity to be useful. Clashing with the Alpha was the last thing she expected on the dangerous assignment.

The oldest Alpha in the U.S. packs lives a gray existence. The loss of his mate so many decades before wears away at him until he doesn’t give a damn about anything. The problems of the other packs are not his, and he prefers to be left to his isolation. The arrival of the Chief Enforcer annoys him, but it is the wolf traveling with him who wakes the predator in Diesel. The scent of mate clings to her, but she rejects his overtures and challenges him on every level.

War may be coming for the Yukon, but Diesel’s battle is very personal…

review-fall-cornucopia

If you’ve been reading this series, you know the Buckley’s are a close knit family and every one of the siblings have Alpha potential. The Triplets, AJ, Ty and Lincoln, have all found their mates. AJ is Mason’s second and mated to turned wolf Vivian. Ty and Claire are finally mated and currently assisting Cassius the Sutter Butte Alpha, and finally Linc is mated to Seraphina the Delta Crescent Alpha. Which brings me to Ranae, she has been somewhat on the outside since her taunting of Claire ended up with her hurting Mason’s mate Alexis.

Sent to train as a hunter she has now reached apprenticeship and has been allowed back into Willow Bend for brief periods of time. Now Mason and AJ have decided that she should be the one to go to the Yukon to ascertain Diesel is still the Alpha and in control. If he is then she is to inform him of the attacks that have occurred at Hudson River and Sutter Butte by Russian wolves.

Julian will be the one escorting her, and she has gathered as much information as she can from the hunters who have gone there before. Not really relishing the primitive conditions they described she embraces the responsibility Mason has entrusted her with.

Julian is not easy to get along with on a good day, and when he takes off for the day in wolf form she is relieved. Hopefully he will find Diesel so she can deliver her messages and go home. Cold showers weren’t cutting it.

Diesel knew immediately that Ranae is his mate, the one whose scent taunted him while in Willow Bend.

This is a favorite scene between them in the guest cabin.

“I don’t want to fight you.”

“Wonderful. I have no desire to fight you, but if you need to beat on me to make yourself feel better, go right ahead. I’m very sturdy.”

The corner of her mouth kicked into an involuntary smile, and his breath lodged in his throat, the single glimpse of sweetness a better reward than he could have imagined. “Are you insane?”

“Depends on your definition of sanity.” The tangle of her hair contrasted with the wool of her pullover. How soft would the strands be? When she failed to respond, he reached out to test his theory. She slapped his hand away, and the sting intrigued him.

“Stop.” Command reverberated through the single syllable. “I came here as a messenger, nothing else. Keep your teeth and your hands to yourself. Am I clear?”

In all things, an Alpha could command. He could take a life. He could grant it. Wolves who pledged to an Alpha could be sent into the heart of danger and forfeit all that they owned. The heart, however, could not be commanded nor could he take what she would not willingly give.

His wolf bucked at the rejection, but Diesel withdrew three steps to give her space. Clasping his hands behind his back, he studied the beautiful Hunter before him. She would not tumble easily, nor would she accept his direct pledge. Very well, if he had to learn to court, then he would find what enticed her. “Dress,” he ordered. “Several layers. We will be leaving the guest quarters.”

Expecting obedience, he turned to the entrance and pressed the code to allow Julian entry.

“Are you staying with her or leaving?” Her presence was non-negotiable.

“Since you asked so nicely…” The Chief Enforcer’s expression barely shifted, yet a smirk echoed beneath his words. “I’d be happy to stay.”

Uninterested in the old wolf’s games, Diesel spared his mate another studying look. Ranae gaped at him, and she hadn’t moved a muscle.

“Trust me when I say it will be more comfortable if you get dressed, but if you insist on testing my patience, I’ll happily take care of stripping you first then dressing you.”

The taunt did what the order would not. She moved.

His wolf rose, stretching and raking his claws. Yes, they had the scent of this hunt.
Long, Heather. Snow Wolf (Kindle Locations 435-454). Heather Long. Kindle Edition.

In spite of the warning the Yukon pack gets hit, the damages several wolves dead, some injured and everyone in their outlying basecamp gone.

With vengeance on his mind Diesel still works on convincing Ranae she’s the only one for him. Things do fall into place for her after they fight together against a Russian wolf, a lieutenant of the Volchitsa, a roving band, claiming land where they could any way they could.

All Diesel has to do is find the pack behind this invasion, destroy it and claim his mate.

A trip to Russia was planned and Diesel is blindsided by Ranae as he gets joined by the pack seconds. Etienne from Delta Crescent, Luc from Hudson River and Trask from Sutter Butte, Julian the head of the enforcers and of course his potential mate, Ranae from Willow Bend.

Not only do we get to know and love Ranae and Diesel, but we learn some very interesting things about Julian and the Yukon.

Plenty of action and drama, combined with the mating dance of Ranae and Diesel make this a book you won’t be able to put down.

Siren’s Calling
The Sea King’s Daughters Book 4

Piper J. Drake

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Amae Waters will never live up to her father’s expectations–she’s not a leader and she’s not a solider. Rather than live with his disappointment, she’s left his realm and built a life for herself in Seattle, a mermaid blending in with humankind. Her mission? To prepare the oceans for the return of her people. But she’s not sure she’s cut out to accomplish that either.

A new predator has entered the waters of the Puget Sound, ravaging orcas and leaving their carcasses to wash ashore for humans to find. Whatever is killing them is beyond human understanding and Amae must find it before it irrevocably damages the complex balance of the ocean ecosystems.

But greater danger lurks in the deep. Amae is done evading traps. She’ll defend her territory and prove she needn’t be a soldier to be a warrior or become the sacrifice used to end her people.

Look for other stories in this exciting Urban Fantasy series from Philippa Ballantine, Stacia D. Kelly, Lauren Harris, Katee Robert, and Asa Maria Bradley.

This book is not so much a romance as a joining of like minds. When called to evaluate the death of an orca, Amae was at first hesitant, she worked outside of the field, not within it. She had to hide her true nature from humans while trying to identify this newcomer to the Puget sound.

One of the researchers involved was also hiding his true identity. Keegan Boots is a Selkie, he also wants to protect and help the sound to replenish and be healthy.

Neither having ever seen the likes of what could have cause the bite marks on the orca and cause the severe damage, Amae has to decide whether or not to allow the Selkie to assist her in the search. Of course he’s not one to take no for an answer either.

I loved this tale of suspense, friendship and the power of co-operation. A fun, suspenseful and entertaining read.

I tasted blood in the water.

Changing course with a flick of my tail, I swam against the fast-moving ocean current toward the source. There were no vibrations in the water to indicate the thrashing of a living thing in distress and the seas were quieter than usual. Not surprising, with this much blood carried on the currents. Predators would be drawn to it and prey would be wise to leave the area or hide.

Curious, I’d come to investigate, thinking one of the killer whale pods had taken a baleen whale. It wasn’t unheard of, though it didn’t happen often. A big kill like that would draw plenty of ocean denizens, and I hadn’t tasted whale in a long time. I wouldn’t kill one, not when I couldn’t finish consuming it myself and not when so many whale species were endangered, but I wouldn’t let it go to waste, either.

When I didn’t find anything in open water, I’d pulled myself up onto the rocky outcropping between islands and found it. The body. But it wasn’t a humpback or gray whale, not a mink or fin whale, either. It was an orca, a killer whale, and that didn’t make any kind of sense.

Before I could take a closer look, the sound of a powerful motor cut through the morning calls of seabirds. Harbor seals lifted their heads and looked around from whee they lay on another rock outcropping. A lone Steller sea lion grunted and scratched his head with a huge hind flipper. He turned to stare at me and I met his gaze, unconcerned. He was a prime specimen of a bull, the largest I’d ever encountered, but he posed no threat to me.

The waves slapped against the rocks around my tail fin in a changed cadence. A boat was approaching, and with it, humans. They were probably whale watching, which meant every one of them would be on the lookout for wildlife. Most of them would have binoculars. I couldn’t let them see me in this form.

I dove back into the water, darting through forests of kelp and berating myself for lingering past dawn. There was too much light and I had to dive deep to be sure nothing on the surface caught sight of even a tail flick from me.

As far as humans were concerned, I didn’t exist. I was a myth, a fairy tale.

If they saw me, they might not even believe what they’d seen. In their dreams or after too many drinks, they might whisper, “Mermaid.”

And they’d be right.

Justice for Hope – Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Book 12 by Susan Stoker

Justice for Hope
Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Book 12
By
Susan Stoker

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Hiding from her ex is exhausting enough, but for Hope Drayden, putting her seven-year-old son through a life on the run and living on the streets has been mentally torturous. When a kind diner owner offers her a job, Hope begins to claw her way toward a new beginning for herself and Billy, one tip at a time. But since her son’s recent abduction, and with threats from her ex still fresh in her mind, she’s constantly looking over her shoulder. Then a surprising, and lucky, tip from a diner regular puts yet another target on their backs.

At the request of a friend, medical examiner Calder Stonewall has been looking for Hope and Billy for weeks. When they unexpectedly show up at the scene of a crime, his interest soon becomes personal. He’s amazed by the beautiful, brave woman and her resilient son. He’s also surprised by his growing need to take care of them both, although winning Hope’s trust won’t be easy. But when a tragedy thrusts the couple together, Calder quickly proves he’s a man Hope can rely on.

Which is a good thing…because she’ll need all his support, and love, to get through a threat they never saw coming.

** Justice for Hope is the 12th book in the Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

While all Susan’s female characters are put through a lot of harrowing situations, Hope’s is different in many ways. She was homeless with her son and after the incident in Justice for Milena, she left the area she where once sought shelter. The area she’s moved to has fewer shelters, but she got lucky. The owner of a diner, Joseph hired her, checked her and Billy into a motel and even let Billy stay in his office while she worked her shifts.

Calder has promised Blythe (Shelter for Blythe) to keep his eyes open for Hope and Billy. He’d been unsuccessful until he was called on an investigation. As one of the Coroners he was frequently called to the scene of a crime. When he saw the woman and child who’d made the call huddled together, he knew he’d found her and the reason he hadn’t before. She’d found a job and was off the streets. Now Calder has what I would call perpetual foot in mouth disease. The poor guy just can’t seem to have anything he says come out the way he really means it to.

This is a favorite scene when he gives Billy his badge for pointing out some evidence.

Billy bit his lip and looked up at his mother uncertainly.

Hope sighed and tried one more time to reject the gift. “It really is too much…uh…I didn’t catch your name.”

“Shoot. Sorry. I’m Calder. Calder Stonewall. One of five medical examiners in Bexar County. Friend of Blythe’s. Totally harmless, run-of-the-mill, forty-year-old guy who only wants to make sure the woman I’ve been searching for is safe, and to show her son that not everyone who carries a badge is a bad guy.”

She stared at him for a long moment before looking back down at Billy. “It’s okay, son.”

Billy reacted so quickly, Calder hardly even saw him moving. He snatched the badge from his hand and was looking down at it with curiosity, turning it over to see that it didn’t have a pin on the back, but rather a clip so it could be attached to a belt or a waistband and worn that way.

“What do you say?” Hope asked her son.

Billy looked up at Calder and nodded at him. Smiling,

Calder said, “You’re welcome.”

Moving slowly, so he didn’t startle mother or son, he stood, making sure to keep his distance.

“Can we go?” Hope asked. “It’s late and I have to work early in the morning.”

Calder nodded immediately. “I’ll need your contact information in case we have any more questions.”

She bit her lip and looked behind herself nervously. “Oh, well…”

“I swear that while I often say things that are odd, I’m a good guy. I just don’t seem to have the gene that allows me not to mess up casual conversations. I don’t mean anything by it. The state of Texas trusts me…don’t you think you can too?”

Calder winced as soon as the words were out of his mouth. Jesus, he was an idiot. He reached into his pocket even as he was shaking his head. He pulled out a business card and a folded piece of paper he’d been carrying around for months, just in case.

“That’s my business card,” he said, holding it out for her. “It has my office number and my cell written on the back. Call me. Anytime—for anything. I mean it. The other is a note from Blythe. I’ve been carrying it around for when I found you.”

“How’d she know you would?” Hope asked quietly, as she took both the card and the note from him.

“She didn’t. But she was hoping,” Calder told her. “Look, I really do need to get your contact info for the report. I’ll get my butt chewed out if I don’t. But I swear, after my investigation is over, I won’t include it in my official report. I know, Hope, why you’re reluctant to share it—but he’s not going to hurt you or your son again. I swear it.”
Stoker, Susan. Justice For Hope (Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Book 12) (Kindle Locations 156-178). Stoker Aces Production, LLC. Kindle Edition.

Calder continues to pursue Hope by having breakfast at the diner where she works. A somewhat stressful environment for Hope, where the waitresses are mostly snippy and a patron leaves lottery tickets as tips.

Things take an interesting turn in many ways when Eli gives Billy the lottery ticket and cash to his waitress. That ticket, a million dollar winner, begins a cycle of events that will have you turning the pages to see what happens next.

I love the way Susan portrays the life changing factors, the slow build of Hope and Calder’s relationship and the twist that brings them closer than ever.

It was great to see all the Badge of Honor crew as they gather to congratulate Hope. I shed more than a few tears over this book. I really can’t wait for the next book in this series!

Princess Snow Cavell finds herself captured by her evil stepmother and handed over to seven ruthless men known as Shadows—the most feared assassins in the known galaxies. Snow’s link to the Cosmos is a threat, one that can no longer be tolerated if her stepmother intends to win the war and rule the Intergalactic Alliance.

Their orders are clear—either execute her or deposit her on one of the slaver colonies to be sold. But the Shadows have other plans for the beauty, plans that will fracture alliances throughout the galaxies and shift the tide of the Intergalactic War.

No one controls the Shadows. They’d sworn to remain neutral during the War, but all bets are off now that Snow’s life hangs in the balance.

**Author’s Note** This work was originally published in April 2018 as part of the Once Upon a Harem Series.

I have read many adaptations of Snow White but this one is by far my favorite.

Snow is the daughter of a slave and a king. The current Queen, her stepmother, wants her gone, dead in fact. The Shadows of Roteran were not having any of that and helped Snow disguise the fact she can in fact control the energy within the well. Then they claim a boon for their wasted time. Her father came up with the terms. She battles the guards, if she wins, the Shadows get her to use, then kill and send the proof to Queen Vilma.

This is a favorite scene.

I fought the guard as he forced my hand toward the liquid.

No. No. No.

I’d once touched the Summoner’s Well with an index finger the first solar cycle I’d been aboard The Paradox. The fallout had imploded the area and left me knocked out for days. Yora had explained it was because I was part Tezan. My mother’s bloodline was a conduit between the Well and its true commander, the Oracle.

Send the power to me, female. Relax and accept the queen’s will or you will die. Send the power to me.

The voice in my head was deep, husky. Steely like the blade of my sword.

One of the Roteran Shadows. I recalled the history Lazar had offered. When Tezans reigned over the Summoner’s Well, they voiced the Oracle’s Will. Roterans enforced the decisions. Roterans were a noble race who’d chosen to remain neutral in the Intergalactic War. They were fiercely private and feared by all. The purple color denoted the Shadow hierarchy.

Send the power to me, female.

I can’t. It’s too much.

I thought the response, though I was no telepath.

Send the power to me, female.

The psychic push was too much to resist. I succumbed, channeled the power the Well offered, and hurled it toward the voice.

The thick liquid encompassed my hand. My insides burned, my body trembled. Pain coursed through my veins, singed my blood as though my entire body was about to explode.

Send more, female, the second male voice commanded. Too weakened from containing the Well’s power, I obeyed.

The guardsmen’s grip on me slackened. I collapsed beside the column.

“Well, it’s as you suspected. She is a common Tezan whore.” The queen waved her hand. “Do as you wish with her, guardsmen. I tire of her presence.”

The men laughed and jeered as they hauled me away. I punched and kicked. “Touch me and you die.”

I shouted the warning again and again as the men dragged me backward. I knew what guardsmen did with slave whores. I’d heard enough stories, remembered the horrors from my father’s home world.

“I thought you wished her sold at the market.” The stranger’s voice boomed within the room. One of the Shadows stepped forward, his gaze flashing disinterest as he regarded me. “We don’t trade damaged goods, Queen Vilma. You know better than to waste our time.”

“Yes, clearly my information was incorrect. My apologies. I expected the slave to have at least some royal Tezan blood. She’s not worth the effort of hauling to the slave market. My guardsmen will have their fun, then snap her neck. I have no need of your services after all. You shall have another opportunity to prove your loyalty to the new Crunan Skeron Empire.”

“I’m afraid you owe us a boon for traveling here, Queen. I must insist. If you don’t wish to waste credits, give the female to us. I assure you she’ll be taken care of in a manner befitting her station.”

“I’ve heard you Shadows are quite sadistic.” The queen smiled. She raked a long, talon-like nail down the man’s torso. She looked over at my father. “What say you, husband? Do you have a preference for how your slave’s child dies?”

My gut soured. Nausea threatened. I hung between the two guardsmen.

My father’s lip curled. “No, but this bores me. I require entertainment. Choose two of your best guardsmen, my bride. I hear my slave child is trained in weaponry. Let us see what she has learned. If she loses, your guardsmen may have her. If she wins, she will die at the hands of the Shadows.”

“Excellent.” The queen purred the order. “Proceed as my husband commands.”

The two guardsmen released me. Pain rose up my thighs as my knees impacted with the hard cargo deck.

They’d killed Lazar, Evon, and Vellis. And my caregiver Yora. I seethed and molded the anger. The time for a decision was upon me. Truth told, I should be dead already. Had it not been for the Shadows in my head, I would be.

Someone had taken the power I channeled without anyone noticing. How? Why?

Why would Roterans help me?

The questions rolled through my mind.

I took a deep breath and decided to trust my gut instinct.

A wise warrior retreats to fight another day. There is no victory in a certain death.

Lazar always taught me lessons through sayings that were more riddle than anything else. What would he have me do? The answer was swift, the only one.

Warriors did not surrender. They died in battle.

The Shadows. I’d fight to win, align my fate with the seven strangers circling my father and his new bride. Perhaps they’d let me pay for my freedom. I knew so little about the Roterans, but Lazar always portrayed them as a proud, noble species.
Cara Carnes. Snow and the Shadows.Roteran Shadows Book 1. Kindle Locations 152-193. Kindle Edition.

There is far more to the Shadows than anyone knows, and some of that is shown when they honor her fallen guards.

I love the way this story slowly winds it’s twisted tale. The patient way the seven shadows wait for her to realize each piece of them as the attraction builds steadily.

Awesome world building and I loved all the heroes and the couple of heroines. Snow and her Shadows are perfectly matched. I can’t wait to read their next adventure.
