Black Hills Wolves #35
Heather Long
Roland James waited a long time to return to the Black Hills. After Seth, his best friend, left—was driven away—and Seth’s family vanished in the night, he had no reason to stay. Only one purpose remained for him—to build his strength and his skills until he could kill the men responsible for their loss. When word reaches him about Magnum’s demise and Drew’s ascension, he rushes home. Though Drew welcomes him and the town seems to be thriving with a Winter Solstice Run in the offing, Roland can’t celebrate. Not all of his enemies are dead. One—the worst—still lives.
Professor Claudia Donovan has spent a great deal of time and effort to locate one of her colleagues. Then she receives an odd message telling her to meet someone about the woman she’s been trying to find in the middle of nowhere in South Dakota. Taking the first flight and renting a car, she waits at the designated spot. A chance meeting and an even riskier hookup for her TA leaves her with more questions than answers. When she ends up in Los Lobos no one wants to answer her questions.
The last thing Roland expects when he lures the human to the Black Hills is to delight in her scent, her temper, and her cutting tongue. He needs the pawn to distract Ryker because the Enforcer has a weakness. Take away his mate, and Roland can kill him once and for all. Maybe his plan makes Roland the bad guy, but he can live with that. The only problem he has is his need for revenge may cost him Claudia….
I find myself going back and forth with this awesome series. This one from before the holidays just beckoned to me ‘Read me again. So I did and once again I fell in love with this pack.
Roland blames Ryker for his actions as Magnum’s enforcer. Even though Magnum is dead and now Drew is Alpha. He came back, took the blood oath, but revenge has been on his mind from day one. He figures the way to accomplish this is to separate Ryker from his mate. Not by anything nefarious but by helping someone who loves her and is worried about her find her and hopefully convince her to leave.
Claudia has been searching for Saja for almost a year and now finally may get a clue as to her location. Fate has plans for Claudia and Shoshanna, her assistant and travel companion on this quest. Plans that aren’t exactly the norm for humans.
As Roland prepares to out Saja, his friend Samuel becomes star struck over Shoshanna. His plans go awry as he ends up talking to Claudia while Sam pursues her friend. Roland finds he may the same attraction to Claudia. She, however, is not as receptive. Then Samuel beats him to the punch by revealing he knows Saja and where she is living.
The games begin when Claudia is forced to stay at Roland’s home. Unsure of her feelings and Roland finally realizing what his are, the following is a favorite scene.
“I came here because Saja Lyons was more than my student; she was family. So is Shoshanna. Tomorrow, I’m going to leave here, and neither one of them are going with me, which means I came looking for family and lost more.” The sharp assessment cut him. “I don’t begrudge Saja her husband or Shoshanna—whatever it is she’s discovered. That madness, that…absolute passion. I haven’t felt that in a long time. So, if I’m not your type, say so, and I’ll—”
It was the utter loneliness in her voice that undid him. Crossing the room in three strides, he slipped his arms around her, cupped her ass, and lifted her from the step until her face was level with his. “You are my type.”
Hunger clawed at him. Maybe it was his Wolf, or maybe it was the woman gripping his shoulders.
“I’m older than you.”
“Probably not, but I don’t give a damn about age.” His gaze fixed on her lips. “It’s a number. We’re flesh and blood.” Then he slammed his mouth down on hers.

I really love the way Heather writes these wolves. So full of anger and overwhelmed with the past. This was another example of how the pack is healing by finding new beginnings and their mates.
5 Contented Purrs for Heather!
Heather Long
National bestselling author, Heather Long, likes long walks in the park, science fiction, superheroes, Marines, and men who aren’t douche bags. Her books are filled with heroes and heroines tangled in romance as hot as Texas in the summertime.
From paranormal historical westerns to contemporary military romance, Heather might switch genres, but one thing is true in all of her stories–her characters drive the books.
When she’s not wrangling her menagerie of animals, she devotes her time to family and friends she considers family. She believes if you like your heroes so real you could lick the grit off their chest, and your heroines so likable, you’re sure you’ve been friends with women just like them, you’ll enjoy her worlds as much as she does.
