Winter Blog Review

Alex and Kat have an old but new relationship. If you’ve been reading the Black Swan series you know the whole crew is off the grid because of a bounty on their heads. This book gives a glimpse at the home side of things as opposed to missions.

In this one we once again see and hear Jack Ashworth, Kat’s Homeland Security boss, I really think he needs to be taken down permanently and soon, please.

We meet Kat’s brother in this one and it looks like there may be a future book there with Nita.

This is a favorite scene when Daniel and Kat finally get to talk a bit.

At the loud male voice booming from the far end of the bar, Katlin sat up straight, her hand dropping to her purse. Alex’s hand automatically went to his hip. Tonight he carried his gun in the small of his back covered by the light suit jacket.

Ruckus laughter broke out from those surrounding the big Brit who stood a little too close to Tori. Alex didn’t miss the slight nod of Kat’s tallest teammate nor the way his woman instantly relaxed. His gaze flicked to Nita and Daniel who had their heads so close together they practically touched.

Ten minutes later, Kat announced, “That’s our signal.” She pulled the straps of her purse up to her shoulder.

Grace grinned and scooted around the circular bench seat. “We need to work on Nita’s American sign language. I had to watch her hands twice to figure out what she was saying.”

As planned, the two couples left as though they were going to their hotel rooms. At the lobby they took the elevator all the way to the top then back down to the third floor where they got out and headed to the stairs. Kat cracked the door and listened for fifteen full seconds before slipping off her sandals and quietly starting down. They exited the building by a side door and circled around to meet Nita and Daniel in the small copse of woods between the resort and the Callahan compound.

Kat’s smile got bigger and bigger the closer she came to her brother. Five feet away she took a giant step and leaped into his arms. They hugged and rocked for a long moment.

Daniel finally set her on the ground. “You get prettier every time I see you.”

“I missed you, too.” She stepped back next to Alex and took his hand. “You remember Alejandro Lobo?” She introduced Alex using his given name, the one her brother would remember. “We went to high school together back in Miami.”

Daniel stared long and hard at him. Alex stared right back. At first he wasn’t sure if it was a shadow shifting or if Daniel’s cheek twitched, but a slash of white gleamed in the darkness.

“I never put it together before.” Daniel glanced at his sister. “Yes, I remember your friend Alejandro Lobo from Miami.” He shifted his gaze to Alex. “I also remember a Marine Captain Lobo who commanded a very successful mission in Guatemala.”

Alex racked his brain and studied the man’s face.

“We never ran into each other, but I was there,” Daniel reassured him.

Then it dawned on Alex. “You were the CIA contact.”

Daniel threw an arm around his little sister. “You found yourself a smart one.” He looked down at her and his eyes softened, as did his voice. “He’s a good man. So much better than that fucker you married.” He kissed his sister on the top of the head. “Come on. I’m starved. None of the bitches in the camp know how to cook anywhere near as well as Rosita.”
KaLyn Cooper. Challenging Love (Kindle Locations 310-333). Black Swan Series. Kindle Edition.

This is one of the hottest books in this series, and it’s filled with all kinds of problems, deceit and suspicions at the top of the list.

Christmas 2015 Blog Review

Hugh Jericho is the new Sheriff in Colton and both him and the residents are getting used to the change. Hugh can’t handle things the way he and his brothers would anymore, he has to do it with tact or legal force.

One of the things he needs to do is clean up the corruption in this town. Hamilton Reed is a bully, albeit a rich one and he has people in his pocket around here. He has it in for the Jericho’s and always has.

When Adira finishes up her documentary on Hugh’s brother Urban, she gets an unexpected interview with Hamilton Reed. Unfortunately the man doesn’t understand the word no and Adira fights back. This results in her being sentenced to thirty days of community service.

Now that might not seem too terrible, but it means she has to shadow Hugh. The man she can’t seem to get out of her mind.

This is a favorite scene.

Attention back on Adira, she now had one leg stretched out in what looked like a yoga pose. The thought didn’t help the ache behind his zipper. In fact, he almost crushed his full paper cup. Throwing it away, he crossed his arms and counted to ten. “Can I help you find something, ma’am?” Although he needed to help himself by going into the restroom and splashing his face with cold water, maybe even dunk his head in a sink full of water, he stayed put. An ice-cold shower wouldn’t take away the nagging need burrowed in his gut that had manifested itself due to the pretty brunette who jumped up from the floor, a delicate shade of pink coloring her high cheekbones. He felt like someone had whacked him with a board as he hungrily lowered his gaze up and down her exquisite curves. His heart rate kicked up and his blood pressure would have made the doctor prescribe him a high dose of meds. Acknowledgment burst through his body like a blast of stifling air.

Lordy!

Her eyes looked amazingly blue in contrast with the bright yellow of her shirt. Her plump lips looked even more delectable covered in a pale lip gloss. He almost forgot that he had asked her a question until she answered.

“I lost an earring.” She brought her hand up to touch her ear lobe, which gave him an opportunity to move his attention along her smooth cheek, jaw, and neck. She was breathtaking, no doubt, and he was out of line. He was expected to abide by a higher set of rules and morals, and being sexually attracted to someone who broke the law wouldn’t be a good way to start his career as Sheriff.

“I’ll help you look. Two sets of eyes are better than one.”

“Thank you. It’s a cheapie, but it means something to me.” She turned back to scanning the floor and he had gone back to enjoying the view of her. He had to grit his teeth against the wave of desire. Her legs weren’t long considering she wasn’t very tall, but long enough to wrap around his ass and…

Shit! He was heading down a dead-end road. Maybe he should have come up with an excuse to stay out of the office today?

She swiveled on her heels. “No luck yet?”

“Huh?”

“Finding the earring.” She smiled and his world lit up. “N-no luck yet.” Damn, if he wasn’t careful she’d catch on to his train of thought. That wouldn’t be good. In fact, she might try her fist out on his jaw too. Tearing his gaze off the beauty, he examined the floor. “What were you doing when you noticed you had lost it.”

She tapped her chin in thought and he noticed her slender fingers, short, clean nails, and a simple thin band on the fourth finger of her right hand. “Let’s see… I was bent over shelving books for Carol.”

‘Bent over’ never sounded better and his hands itched to grab her and draw her close.

Realizing he was about to embarrass himself, he pulled himself together. “Here, let’s use my flashlight.” He pulled the light from his belt and switched it on.

They both sunk to the floor searching. He had his head lowered giving his best effort on helping and didn’t realize how close he was to her. So, when he lifted his head and realized his face was within inches of her booty, he growled. She looked back at him, her cheeks turning a shade of pink he’d never seen before.

“Sorry,” he mumbled. Best if he searched the other side of the room.

The light reflected off something shiny along the wall and he picked up the tiny stud. “Found it.”

“You found it!” She came up so quickly, she hit her head on the water fountain.

“Oh, shit. You okay?”

She held her head. “I’ll live.”

“Let me look.” He dropped the earring in his front pocket and examined her forehead. He could see faint bruising at her hairline.

“I’ll grab ice,” Carol said.

Hugh helped Adira up and led her into his office. “Take a seat on the sofa.”

“This isn’t necessary. I barely bumped my head.”

“You’re under my care. I can’t have you getting hurt, not even a paper cut.”

Carol brought the ice and handed it over, then he sat down next to Adira.

“You must think I’m a klutz.” She looked up at him through thick lashes.

“I was just thinking I made you nervous. The uniform and gun can have that affect sometimes.” He laughed. Grabbing the earring from his pocket, he held it in his palm. Her smile could have won wars. She reached for the earring and their fingers brushed, causing an electrical jolt to shimmy up his arm and settle into his chest. The last time he’d been moved liked this by a woman had been… well, he couldn’t remember when, if ever. “You take the earring and I’ll hold the ice pack. Deal?”

“Deal.”
Rhonda Carver. Hughs Chase (Kindle Locations 758-802).

A lot happens in this book, both within the community and with the growing attraction between Hugh and Adira. Some not so subtle pushes from Deputy Carol add to the intrigue.

A fun read with some intense moments, some laughs and plenty of heat.

Christmas 2015 Blog blurb

When Maddie Carter comes back from the grave, will Hawk have a fresh start with the one who got away?

Deep Six pilot, former Army Nightstalker, Rhett Hawkins, knew the day would come, but he had hoped it wouldn’t be until after he was gone. Maddie Carter was destined to die young, because that is just how she lived. She flew by the seat of her pants and flying as all she cared about. He’d learned that the hard way, when he asked her to marry him and she shot him down.

But after her memorial service, Hawk just couldn’t get past the feeling that something was wrong with the recounting of the events that led to the crash and her supposed death. Neither the helo or her body had been found. It drove him insane until he decided to do some investigation of his own. After getting conflicting stories from two surviving special operators, he knew he had to go the full distance to settle his mind.

Once in Central America, Hawk realizes there is much more going on than the Army knows. Not only is the now blacked-out military helicopter back in service, Maddie is behind the stick making drug runs for a brutal cartel.

When he has to convince her she needs to be rescued, Hawk sees she is not the same. Captain Maddie Carter is scarred, hardened and has no memory of him or her former life at all.

Back home, when her memory starts to return and secrets are revealed, could it mean he’d only rescued her to lose her again? Would those secrets change his own life forever too?

This book starts out in the heat of the moment and then has me in tears.

There are times in books when you want to smack a character upside the head and believe me the beginning of this book was one of those times.

Maggie ignores what is right in front of her, the man who loves her unconditionally and is offering her everything. All to join a special forces team her father, the General, because he pulled strings to get her admitted to the training.

Hawk can’t fight the force of the guilt that led Maggie to reject his proposal and walks away, saying good-bye. Not just for now, forever.

When Hawk’s informed of her death, he meets up with her brother at the funeral. Max shares the intel he has on the incident that resulted in her death and something about that report doesn’t sit right with Hawk.

This is a favorite scene when he calls Max in the middle of the night.

His hands shook as he threw his legs over the side of the bed and reached down to grab his flight suit to find his phone. He wasn’t going into this alone, and he knew the one man who could help him. He dialed Max Carter’s number and huffed a breath.

“What in the ever-loving hell do you want at three in the morning?!?” Max grumbled when he answered.“I need to go to Guatemala and find her,” Hawk replied, swallowing hard.

“She’s dead, Hawkins,” Max said, his voice firm but sympathetic. “I know that’s tough to accept. I’m having a hard time with it too— but even if she was alive after the crash, she’s been out in that jungle hurt for six months, so she’s dead now.” He huffed a breath. “I knew I shouldn’t have given you that report.”

“Bodies don’t disappear,” Hawk replied, shoring up his determination. “No, but two men who are foolish enough to go there in the middle of cartel turf wars do. It would be stupid of us to traipse into that hell to recover a body,” Max shot back.

“She could be alive and held captive by a cartel. Those operators who said she was dead aren’t trained medics. She could be MIA instead of KIA. Doesn’t that thought make your blood run cold?” Hawk knew it sure made his icy with fear.

“Why are you calling me in the middle of the night to drag me into your fantasy world?” Max asked with a groan. “I’m out of the secret mission business as soon as my last day of terminal leave is up. I’m fantasizing of opening a beach bar in Tahiti, not going to Guatemala.”

“I’m calling because you are the only other person on this earth who cared— cares about her. Show it and come with me.”

“Fuck me,” Levi groaned from the upper bunk. “I’m going too— and Caleb will probably want to go. Someone needs to be there to save your stupid ass.”

“No— this is my problem,” Hawk replied. “Logan needs you here for assignments.”

“If this is your problem, why the hell are you bothering me?” Max asked, and Hawk pulled the phone away from his ear to glare at it.

“Logan needs you here for assignments too,” Levi shot back. “Without you and the bird, we’re grounded anyway.”

“I’m not taking the bird,” Hawk informed. He’d come up with a plan that stretched his savings account to the max, but he could pull it off. If they found her pretty quickly.

“What? Are you walking to Guatemala?” Levi asked with a snide laugh.

“No, I’m leasing a helo,” Hawk growled, rolling his eyes as he put the phone back to his ear. “I’ll meet you at the hangar at Falcon Field at ten o’clock.”

Mickie’s brother Dante was a former Black Hawk pilot, and unemployed since the FBI terminated him, so he’d ask him to fill in while he was gone. That could be a while, because Hawk was not leaving Guatemala without Maddie, or her body.

“I didn’t say I was going with you,” Max said.

“You didn’t say you weren’t going with me, either,” Hawk shot back. “And if you don’t, you’ll be living with my death, along with your sister’s, for the rest of your life.”

“What makes you think I would care one way or another if you got yourself killed?” Max asked gruffly. “You can’t save stupid.”

“But you’ve tried enough times that the left-hand side of your uniform is ten times heavier than the right.” He’d heard about that for years from Maddie, but saw the medals for himself on the man’s dress blues at the funeral.

Max sighed. “Yes, I’m the Stupid Asshole Rescue Specialist, so I guess I’m going.”

“Good, I’ll meet you at the hangar at ten.” Hawk hung up the phone and his insides felt lighter than they had in six months.

I’m coming to find you, baby.
Becky McGraw. Hard Landing: Deep Six Security Book 6 (Kindle Locations 301-334). Becky McGraw.

A very tense mission follows, looking for the cartel and getting Maggie out. A big surprise awaits Hawk and the rescue becomes even more complicated.

Confrontations with Maggie’s father are intense on all sides. Maggie’s memory is a problem the Army needs to resolve and they also want their damn helo back.

A page turning, action packed, heartrending story, causing many tears and hold your breath moments. But also many smiles as well.

Christmas 2015 Blog Review

Eva wants this Christmas to be festive for her son Oscar. She’d been pretty much a recluse since her husband died and this holiday to Santa’s Secret Village was just what they needed.

Rudi is the new owner of the Village and in order to evaluate the property for sale, he is there incognito with his daughter, Isabel. It’s his mother’s hope he’ll connect with his daughter more and work a little less.

I really love the whole concept of this story. Two single parents, one a widow, the other divorced coming to the village to reconnect with their children.

Now I admit, Rudi was working more than spending time with Isabel, but Eva and Oliver would change gradually that.

Isabel is a charming well behaved seven year old, and Oscar is a hyper three year old. The two of them together is delightful to read. A favorite scene is when Isabel suggests they join Eva and Oscar in the Exhibition hall.

“Where would you like to go?” he asked. “We could visit Santa’s Playground.” The theme park brought in the most money in the complex, so he was keen to cast his eye over it. “Or maybe go for a reindeer ride.” Every child’s dream!

But to his surprise, Isabel pointed over to the Exhibition Centre. Two figures were disappearing into the building: Eva in her brown duffle coat and a red bobble hat, Oscar running ahead of her.

“There is the lady from last night,” Isabel said.

“Eva,” Rudi said, her name giving him a little glow inside.

“Yes, Eva and Oscar. Can we join them?”

“I thought he annoyed you,” Rudi said, smiling.

“He is naughty. But he is also fun.” Isabel scratched her nose. “Can we, Daddy?”

“Of course.” He took her hand, and they crossed the road to the Exhibition Centre.

They were met with a rush of warm air when Rudi pushed open the door. He stood for a moment in the foyer, taken aback by the high ceilings and the beauty of the decorations. He had expected more sickly-sweet representations of the Santa theme. It was true the woman standing by the door to the main exhibition wore an elf costume, and the décor consisted of the usual red and green colors, but the artist who’d painted the huge mural covering the whole of one wall had done a superb job. It showed a smiling Santa riding his sleigh through a wintry night, with Rudolph leading the reindeer at the front, his red nose shining with sparkling paint. Behind them, the artist had painted the aurora borealis, which glowed with iridescent greens and blues against the midnight sky.

“They did a good job, didn’t they?” It was Eva, who had come over to stand beside him. “What a wonderful painting. I wish I could paint like that!”

He smiled. “Good morning.” She’d undone her duffle coat, and beneath it she wore jeans with a white sweater with a silvery thread that, matched with the red scarf, made her look festive and bright.

“Hyvaa huomenta,” she said, then grinned. “How did that sound?”

“Almost right,” he said, touched she’d bothered to learn the Finnish words. “Except it’s HUU-vaa not HY-vaa.”

She said it again, perfectly this time, and he nodded. nodded. “I’m terrible with languages,” she admitted as they entered the exhibition. “I just don’t have an ear for them. I have no idea how you can be fluent in two.”

“Actually I speak French and German as well.” The truth was he spoke English the best of his non-native languages because Vanessa was half-English, but he didn’t want to talk about his ex-wife today.

She turned startled eyes on him. “Good grief. That is impressive.”

He decided to think of more remarkable things to tell her so she would look at him like that again, a mixture of admiration and wonderment, as if he’d told her he had walked on the moon. “It is not so difficult,” he said, trying to be self-deprecating and not wanting to appear arrogant. “And besides, I am not quite there yet. I still find contractions difficult.”

“I noticed. You say ‘I am’ not ‘I’m’, for example. But you shouldn’t change. You have a lovely accent.”

He’d always considered the Finnish accent comical, hating the tell-tale musical lilt, and tried to eliminate it when he could. But her compliment pleased him. “Thank you.”

She smiled. “That’s a nice picture, look.” She indicated Oscar and Isabel who were sitting on a bench together, watching a cartoon about Christmas customs in different parts of the world. She removed her phone from her jeans pocket and took a photo of the two of them. “I’ll send that to Bridget, my mother-in-law.”

“Good idea.” He took one as well. “I will send it to my mother. She will be thrilled I have brought Izzy out of the cabin and into the big wide world!”
Woods, Serenity. Santa’s Secret (Christmas Wishes Book 1) (Kindle Locations 538-578). Kindle Edition.

The build up is slow and sensuous as Rudi and Eva find more than just friendship.

It’s not all smooth sailing though. Oscar has temper tantrums and Isabel has issues with her parent’s divorce.

With Oscar’s help, Isabel discovers more fun to go with her manners and they both discover there’s more than a little magic to the holiday.

A truly delightful Christmas tale with more than enough heat to melt the snow.

Hawk’s heart had never been so full, he thought, as he held his daughter to his shoulder and gently patted her back the way Maddie had shown him. Her gentle roar tickled his insides and he smiled. When Sarah sighed and snuggled into his neck, peace and contentment swept through him and he sighed too.

No wonder Maria didn’t want to let Maddie have time with her. He understood now why evicting her, her baby and her boobs from the suite became necessary to get his time too. Sarah Elaine Hawkins, named after both their mothers, was the sweetest, most cuddly baby in the world. Irresistible when she turned on her charm. A chip off the old block.

Forget the fucking test—call and tell them you don’t want to know. Just tell Maddie to tell them she had the baby in El Paso when you stopped for fuel. Tell her to put your name on the birth certificate.

But it was too late for that. He’d set those wheels in motion, and there was no stopping that runaway bus now. Maddie’s disability payments and Sarah’s future now depended on those results, because of him.

Countdown to Christmas: Interview with Serena Akeroyd and Review of Christmas Dragon Style – The Sanguenna Chronicles Book 1 by Serena Akeroyd

😻
Please join me in welcoming Serena Akeroyd.
Serena has graciously answered some questions for me.
Thank you so very much Serena!

Thank you so much for hosting me today, Carol!
The release of a new novel is always an exciting and terrifying time. Christmas: Dragon Style is more nerve-wracking than most as I am a total fan of dragon paranormal romances. This book basically epitomizes everything I adore about dragon shifters, so there’s quite a lot at stake for me!
I just hope my readers, old and new, love Remy and the rest of the characters within this new series of mine.
I thought I’d answer a few questions for my wonderful host, so let’s dot some Is and cross some Ts! ❤

What is it you love about dragons?

It sounds crazy, doesn’t it? How can you love dragons? I mean, they don’t exist. (Don’t quote me on that. If some dragon shifter out there wants to pick me up and take me off to his lair, I’m up for that!) But I think it’s their nature. They’re hoarders, and they protect and defend what they keep.
I guess you could say that about all shifters, but I don’t think so. Dragons, more than most shifters, value their mates because of the crazy length of their lives.

Plus, they can fly. I mean, who doesn’t want to fly, right?

Remy’s a French name, right?
Can dragons be French?

Well, in The Sanguenna Chronicles, dragons have an unusual background. Dragons are too dangerous to live in our realm, so thousands of years ago, they, along with Goblins and Elven folk, had to move to the ‘other’ realm. They live there, and only cross back and forth to our universe to find their mates.

Remy isn’t French, but his mother is! Dragons are very progressive, I’ll have you know. The mother names their child, otherwise known as a ‘ling in Dragonspeak, and she names them for her heritage.

Odd fact: Surnames go first in Dragon culture. So, Dreconis Remy is how our hero would introduce himself politely!

You mentioned Goblins and Elven folk, do they make an appearance in Christmas: Dragon Style?

Well, Goblins do. But I can’t say much about that. It’s all part and parcel of the elaborate courtship dragons have with their mates, otherwise known as lemans.

Elven folk make an appearance in the third book. How do I know? Well, I’m writing it now!

What’s your favorite holiday tradition?

Well, the reason I wrote Christmas: Dragon Style, was because I love exploring the many different traditions there are over November and December. As a Brit, the American holiday season entrances me. Definitely expect a Thanksgiving: Dragon Style at some point in the future! (Yes, you heard that here first! 😉 )

As for myself, my best, most beloved tradition has to be putting up the Christmas tree. Boring, I suppose. But I put it up in November!! Ha! Yep! Shameful, I know, but like a dragon, I appreciate everything that glitters!

Thanks for having me, Carol. I hope I’ve sparked your interest in Christmas: Dragon Style! It’s available from the 19th December.

Happy reading, everyone, and even happier holidays!

Smooches,
Serena ❤

Christmas 2015 Blog blurb

With Christmas around the corner, Sanguenna and leader of her Coven, Mia LeRoche, has nothing more on her mind than a lucrative holiday season at her night club. Then, a dragon pops up in her life, informs her he’s her mate, doesn’t understand the Internet, is seriously confused by Netflix, and continuously calls her his ‘lemon’.

Once friends with the Vikings, Remy Dreconis has seen and done a lot. What he hasn’t done, however, is his mate. The horizontal tango is in his future if she can get past the fact he was around for the Black Death and really doesn’t understand how cell phones work.

For five centuries, the Mother has forsaken dragonkind, denying them their lemans because of a heinous crime committed by one of her children. Remy and Mia must traverse a new phase in dragon society, creating history as they go.

But Mia’s stuck on the fact she has to live in a realm with no cell service, and Remy’s obsession with books tops her love of Jimmy Choos. This odd couple shouldn’t have what it takes to form a lasting mate bond, but the Mother knows something they don’t…

Book two in the series is coming February 14th 2018!

Christmas 2015 Blog Review

Dang! This book opens with a sizzling scene. Albeit a dream, but like I just said Dang!

Mia is a Sanguenna, a high power, female vampire. Her Coven is large and consists of daywalkers (half human/half vampire), nightwalkers (pure vampire), and humans. She has very lucrative nightclubs, one of which is located in a large warehouse that is also her home.

Remy is a dragon shifter, he enters the human realm to find his Mate, his Leman. He has wakened knowing she is out there and he has to find her. When he does, he has to convince her he speaks the truth.

A favorite scene is when Mia wakes after the mate bond begins.

“We are mated then?” she asked.

“Need you ask?” he replied gently, a faint smile curling his lips, one she joined him in.

“That was certainly an experience.”

“One way of putting it,” he told her, quirking his brow in response. “How do you feel?”

She closed her eyes. “Strange.”

“In a good or bad way?”

“Like I’ve been run over by a truck but light as a feather too.”

“Well that’s contradictory,” he teased.
Serena Ackeroyd. Christmas Dragon Style ARC (Kindle Location 520). Kindle Edition.

Of course, nothing is going to be simple and Mia finds she isn’t able to do much of anything right away. This causes her to spend quite a bit of time in Remy’s realm.

Remy needs to learn her ways and she needs to learn his. In the process there is much frustration and a recalcitrant cousin. Not to mention the chaos that ensues within Mia’s realm.

Lots of giggles, frustration, sizzling thoughts, some flames and a touch of suspense will keep you turning the pages.

I can’t wait for the next book in this series!

Countdown to Christmas: Marine Under The Mistletoe – Always a Marine Book 19 by Heather Long

Marine Under the Mistletoe
Always A Marine Book 19
By
Heather Long

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Christmas 2015 Blog blurb

He used to believe in magic…

Kaiden Nelson looked like every other Marine, only most of his guys didn’t grow up in a family of nudists, celebrating the wheel of the year and the lunar cycles. His buddies wouldn’t name him a witch, either. But after more than a decade at war, Kaiden isn’t sure he can—or even wants to lay claim to that calling anymore. He’s got too much blood on his hands and he’s tired…tired of war, tired of fighting. Some days…he’s tired of living. When he’s sent on leave for the holidays, he’s unsure if he can ever really go home again.

She’s a candle in the night…

Rowan Harper lives in two worlds, the mundane where she handles tech issues for a major corporation and the pagan where she celebrates the sabbats and esbats with her coven. Like so many in the region, she keeps her beliefs private. It makes life more bearable from others who would judge, and she likes nothing better than the great sabbat retreats the coven takes to the sprawling Lake House. It’s a time where she sheds the shackles of everyday life and embraces the divine.

The wheel turns…

When Kaiden turns up at the coven Yule, his Circle of family and friends are eager to welcome him. He feels unworthy of the open warmth and shies away to the darkness, but Rowan refuses to leave him in the shadows. Can the inexorable pull of one woman help him face down his demons as they hold vigil against the longest night of the year?

Christmas 2015 Blog Review

There is yet another holiday that occurs in December, that of the Winter Solstice also known as Yule. This book is set in that holiday.

Kaiden comes home for Yule for the first time in a long time. Serving as a Marine, he is now conflicted and not sure he belongs anymore. After all a cardinal rule is ‘an it harm none’.

Arriving at the Lake house for the holiday he is greeted by Rowan. She is beauty and grace personified.

In spite of his parents trying to match them up, Rowan and Kaiden stumble their way into a relationship. This is a favorite scene as they get to know one another.

“So why don’t you quit?” He rolled onto his side, no longer bothering to pretend he had more interest in the view overhead than the woman sprawled next to him. Her eyebrows climbed.

“Why don’t you?”

“Marines don’t quit.”

“They also don’t leave men behind,” she murmured.

“No, ma’am. They don’t.” The rocks on his chest compressed.

She didn’t turn away from him, holding his gaze long enough he could see the sadness and concern creep into her eyes. “So why did you leave yourself over there?”

Shock rippled up his spine, and his mind locked. “What?”

“You’re still there, Kaiden.” She rolled onto her side, mirroring his posture, and cupped his cheek with a cool palm. “Something bad happened to you—or maybe a lot of something bads. I don’t know. You can tell me to butt out. I won’t be offended.”

“Are you psychic?” He rejected the question even as he asked it, since it didn’t take a psychic to read his body language. The wariness he’d seen in the eyes of his friends and family—the seemingly unsurpassable gulf surrounding him lent more credence to her words than anything else.

“I’ve been accused of being psychotic before.” Light teasing sprinkled the statement, and she grinned.

Another rusty laugh broke loose. She began to withdraw, but he captured her wrist and kept her palm to his cheek. It was soft, softer than anything he’d felt in a long time. “I’m pretty messed up.”

“Okay.” Acceptance, no questions.

“You’re not asking me why.” He couldn’t quite wrap his mind around the concept.

“I think questions might harm you, and I don’t need you to tell me anything. But I will listen if you want to.” The salve of her kindness soothed the abrasions in his soul. “I’m going to hug you, okay?”

“Why?” Not that he minded.

She smiled and scooted closer, wrapping her arms around him. “So you’ll lie down and gaze at the sky and know you’re here, and not there. You’re not alone.”

The lean softness of her fit him perfectly and he settled onto his back, curving an arm around her to tuck her in closer. She nestled her head on his shoulder.

“Breathe,” she whispered, and he let out the breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. “And just be.”

The scent of cherry blossoms teased him, and he had to wonder if it was her shampoo or a perfume. Grass cushioned him, the woods surrounded him, the sun warmed his face, and the muscles in his back relaxed. Rowan massaged her palm against his chest in slow, easy circles. Bit by bit, his arms shuddered with the release of tension.

“Are you really single?” he asked, one-hundred-percent sure what he wanted for her answer.

“Yes, I’m really single.” She chuckled and the vibration teased him. “I’m not dating anyone, either. But you need to concentrate on relaxing, not on me.”

The answer satisfied him—for now. “Don’t go away,” he told her.

“I won’t.” And she didn’t. He had no idea how long he lay there, but eventually his eyes closed. Breathing exercises, not so long-forgotten that he couldn’t manage them, helped to steady his heartbeat. Sleep stole over him, and he let it, aware of her head resting on his shoulder and the warmth of her cuddled to his side.
Long, Heather. Marine Under the Mistletoe (Always a Marine series Book 19) (Kindle Locations 389-417). Decadent Publishing Company, LLC. Kindle Edition.

A heartwarming tale, the story of Yule, and a treat that makes the holiday sweeter.

I laughed and sniffled as this conflicted man works his way to peace and love with the help of a sensitive, intuitive woman.

Christmas 2015 Blog Review

I have to say this book was a bit of a surprise, Aaron isn’t like most of the billionaires I’ve read. He’s not quite as assertive as one might expect. He dislikes Christmas, preferring to spend it on a tropical island alone. Other than the responsible CEO duty of the Christmas Party stays away from all things related to the holiday.

Robyn on the other hand is perky, a true believer in Christmas, and determined in her own way. Part of the holiday traditions at the office is to auction off of some of the management for Charity. Not like a dating thing, but to help with chores, or babysit, things like that.

Although he’s never participated before Aaron bids to win the beautiful Robyn and sets her on a series of tasks delivering holiday cheer in an elf costume.

I felt good right up until the point that Robyn said, “Okay, I think you’re ready.”
“Ready for what?” I asked, sheer terror gripping at my heart. Was she going to let go of me?“I’m going to let go of one of your hands and turn around and skate next to you, okay?”“Sure, I’ve made one round, I’m an expert now.”

“Sarcasm,” she said. “I love it.” I loved the way her face was flushed from the cold and her blue eyes sparkled out from underneath the pink knit hat she wore.

She let go of my left hand and I watched her feet glide backwards until she was facing forward and right next to me. She made it look so easy. I couldn’t really see myself, but I was sure I made it look ridiculous. I wondered if she was reading my mind somehow because right then she said, “Stop worrying about how you look and relax. Who cares what any of these people think? Chin up, chest out, head held high, and most importantly of all, smile. Have fun!” Easy for her to say, I thought, but I tried. I forced myself to stop looking down at my feet. I stopped looking at the others as they gracefully passed by too. I looked straight ahead and gripped Robyn’s hand like a lifeline. Before I knew it, we’d gone another lap around. On the next lap, Robyn began singing along with the Christmas song playing in the background. She knew every word and she had a beautiful voice. I was enjoying the serenade so much that I hardly even registered the next lap.

By the time we were on our fourth, or maybe our fifth she said, “Are you ready to solo?” My stomach did somersaults. It was something I hadn’t felt since I was a kid. I wasn’t ready, I was scared to death. Sometimes in business when I took a big gamble it was scary, but it was a good scary. This was bone-breaking scary. I couldn’t admit that out loud though. I had my reputation. Instead, I did what I thought would please her.

“Sure, let’s give it a shot,” I told her.

“That’s the attitude I’ve been looking for. I knew it was in there somewhere,” she said with a wink. Robyn smiled and squeezed my hand and then let it go. Although we were both wearing gloves, the first thing I realized was how much colder I felt as soon as I was missing her touch. The next thing I recognized was that I hadn’t realized how much she was actually supporting me. I started slipping and sliding and my hands automatically reached out for something to hold onto. I didn’t realize it at that moment, but it was like over-correcting in a car when you went into a skid. I grabbed hold of Robyn without considering the consequences. I heard her squeal as we both went down… hard. I landed on my backside and Robyn was lying across the top of me. I was glad at least that I didn’t crush her. As much as this position would have been something I’d love in another setting, I was completely humiliated as people slid by so effortlessly while I sat on my ass on the cold ice. They seemed to all be smiling too.

Robyn was squirming, trying to untangle us and it only seemed to tangle us up further. My left leg was twisted backwards at an odd angle and I was afraid I wasn’t going to be able to stand back up. Robyn finally got her legs free and I realized I was still gripping her arm. I let that go and she was sitting on her backside facing me, and she was laughing. She was laughing so hard that she had tears in her eyes.

At last she was able to stop and with an escaped tear rolling down her cheek, she said, “See there, that wasn’t so bad now, was it?” Maybe not, but now I was on my ass on the ice and I had no idea how to stand up.

“I suppose the falling wasn’t so bad, but now how do I get back up?” I asked her.
“Watch,” she said. She got up on her knees and put one skate underneath her. Using her hands she pushed herself up in what seemed to be one effortless motion. She did make it look easy, although I wasn’t going to be fooled into believing it was going to be that easy for me, I felt a little better. “Now you try it,” she said.

I got up on my knees… so far so good. Then I put my hands down on the ice and put one skate underneath me and then… I fell forward, flat on my face.

“Oh my gosh! Aaron! I’m sorry! Are you okay?” Robyn was suddenly down on the ice next to me. I don’t know what happened then. It must have been breathing in her enthusiasm all morning, but the thought of what I had to look like, splayed out on the ice suddenly struck me as funny. I started laughing and I couldn’t stop. “Oh thank goodness, you’re okay!” Robyn said. I reached up and playfully pulled her down on top of me and once again we were both splayed out on the ice. She was laughing too now and it suddenly occurred to me that we were going to have to get back up and that made me want to laugh even more. It was like Robyn had infected me with her magic and I had to admit that it felt really good.
Rayner, Holly. The Billionaire’s First Christmas – Contemporary Romance (A Winters Love Book 1) (Kindle Locations 819-860). UNKNOWN. Kindle Edition.

I found myself laughing with them throughout the many Christmasy things Robyn puts Aaron through.

Even as love blossoms, Aaron questions himself and his judgement.

I laughed and teared up a bit as this fun Christmas read progresses from Scrooge to a holiday of love.

I only had a problem with a prank Robyn played as I think anyone would have been far more angry than amused.

Christmas 2015 Blog Review

This December is not only for Christmas, last night at sundown, Hanukkah, The Festival Of Lights began. This is Issac’s story as he returns home to celebrate with his family for the first time in eight years. He knows he will have to face his ex Zehava at some point, it’s a small community. He’s not sure of his emotions where she is concerned but he’s sure the time has come to figure it all out.

Zehava blames herself for Issac’s anger. She was the one who gave their child away. Although she lives with the heartbreak of doing that, she also knows it was the best thing for the child.

Surrounded by the magic of the holiday season Zehava in her way opens the door to both their pain to hopefully lead to forgiveness.

This is a favorite scene as Zehava shares her promises to her son with Issac.

So man up, Marine, and listen.

The silence stretched out between them, and he forced patience while she studied him. Whatever she sought must have satisfied her because she held out her hand. “I want to share something I do every Hanukkah. Normally I do it alone, but you’re here and I want—I need to do it with you this year.”

Mild alarm rang through him and he ignored that as well, in favor of taking her hand. Her fingers threaded through his and the palm to palm clasp soothed him like a warm embrace. “Okay,” he said, the only word he could push out past the emotion clogging his throat. She tugged and he followed her into the community center, curiosity and dread an uncomfortable cocktail in his system.

Once inside, she hit the light switch and he shut the doors. Since the center should be closed, he went ahead and turned the lock. He didn’t need any unpleasant surprises walking in on them. Zehava gave his hand a squeeze then, releasing him, headed to the table with all of the menorahs. Wary, but curious, he followed.

“He was born in summer.” The words crashed down on him, and he was grateful her back was to him so he had time to absorb the blow and mitigate his reaction. “Our son, I mean,” she explained as though he might need the clarification.

His jaw hurt from clamping it shut, but he kept it closed. He couldn’t guarantee what would come out because the old anger roused like a bad case of heartburn to claw at his insides.

Squatting, Zehava pulled another menorah from beneath the table and set it on top. She ducked down again and took out two fresh candles. “I held him for a couple of hours after his birth.” The words were so soft he had to strain to hear them. “It took that long for the adopting family to arrive at the hospital. Mama stayed with me. She never said a word about the decision, in favor or against.”

Muscles cramping, he folded his arms and forced himself to stay exactly in place. The urge to storm out warred with the urge to hold her—both intent on tearing him apart. Maintaining his position was the best he could manage.

“I held him and I made him a promise. Well, a promise and a wish, actually.” Her voice trembled. “The first was I wished for him to have the best life he could have, with a wealth of opportunity, and a family who loved him. Both the parents who adopted him, and of course, the parents who gave him life.”

Hell opened up beneath Isaac and bellowed its fire through his soul. He stayed firm and didn’t give in to the need to slam his fist into the wall until it broke, or his knuckles did. He didn’t want to hear her damn story.

Yet, he desperately hung on every word.

“The second promise was I would light the menorah for him every year and remember him and pray for him. The first Hanukkah after his birth was very hard, but I kept my promise. I think I cried every night I lit the candles for him.” She twisted finally and looked at Isaac. “Would you light it with me this year?”

She held her breath after asking the question that had danced around in her mind all evening. Never had she felt so connected and yet utterly divided from the same person in the same moment. He stared at her, his expression inscrutable save for the muscle flexing in his jaw.

“Yes.”

The one word answer, single, rough, and raw, let her exhale and she fought a wave of dizzying relief. She held a candle out to him with trembling fingers.
Long, Heather. A Candle for a Marine (Always a Marine series Book 18) (Kindle Locations 611-640). Decadent Publishing Company, LLC. Kindle Edition.

In a way unique to her, Heather made me feel their pain, their sorrow, and their love not only for the child they gave up but for each other.

I loved seeing Zach again and was glad he was able to give Issac the kick he needed.

Have tissues handy for this one, you’ll need them as Issac and Zahava find their way.
