Do you want to live your life or hide from it?

Diana knew she lied to her best friend when she said she wanted to live it. Oh, how desperately she wanted to hide! Hide from her husband’s betrayals, hide from the blame and guilt heaped on her by her younger daughter’s refusal to accept the divorce, hide from the pity, the questions, the snarky innuendos from her “friends.” Most of all, hide from herself and her failures. Her family accepted her need to “find herself,” and this apartment in the south of France was perfect with its balcony and view of the sea and town. Low enough to be able to watch life happen below her, high enough to not participate in any of it. Now if only the gentle people of Cassis would let her do that.

Patricia Bond always seems to transport me somewhere. Whether it be in history or like this book a place that is here and now.

One of the first things that attracted me to this story is the heroine. Diana is not young she is in her 50’s and recently divorced. Now, divorced at that age is more than a challenge, she has grown children with minds of their own and opinions, some of which they really should just keep to themselves.

I could definitely relate to one of Diana’s sentiments of being someone’s daughter, someone’s wife, someone’s mother and having no idea who Diana is anymore. Even her anger and frustrations rang true to me, even at the doves that seemed to have a home on her balcony. What a balcony it is, her friend Mitzi struck gold when she found this place for Diana to rent. Wrap around with views of the harbor and the calanques of Cassis.

In spite of her intent of hiding, Diana does manage to make friends. The portrayal of the many gallant Frenchman had me smiling with every encounter.

This is a favorite scene with Laurent, her landlord and flirt.

“In honor of your first day living in Cassis…” he began, his eyes fixed on me.

“Yes?”

“May I take you to dinner? In honor of your first day living in Cassis,” he repeated quickly.

Oh my. I barely knew him. He could be an ax-murderer. My landlord, the ax-murderer. I would politely refuse, see him out and lock the door behind him. I turned away, then spun back, questioning the wisdom of turning my back to him, but not before my glance flitted over the phone lying on the table next to the sofa.

‘You can hide or you can live,’ echoed Mitzy’s voice in my head. ‘Which one do you want?’

I want to hide, I thought. I want to close my eyes and pretend I’m invisible, like Anthony’s cat, Cutie-Pie. If I can’t see you, you can’t see me. I wanted to be invisible to everybody. Even me.

Especially me.

But the man standing in my apartment wouldn’t let me. And damn, I DID want to live! Even if it meant having dinner with an ax-murderer. “That would be lovely,” I said with a smile. “Why don’t you sit down? I’ll be ready in just a moment.”

I stood aside as Laurent stepped forward. I waved him to the sofa, told him to make himself comfortable and disappeared into my bedroom. Behind the safety of the closed bedroom door, I shut my eyes and gulped a quick breath. This is beyond ridiculous. The man is no more an ax-murderer than I am. What he is, is a considerate landlord who wants to take his new tenant to dinner so she won’t have to eat alone on her first night here. Why should the thought be so paralyzing?

I could practically feel Mitzy’s hand on my shoulder. Get a grip! she’d be saying. Hide or live?

Taking another deep breath, I stepped away from the door and stood in front of the small mirrored vanity next to the armoire. I still wore the same clothes I’d worn driving in, and my crying had dissolved any semblance of make-up that might have survived the drive and the unpacking. I knew I was a disaster emotionally today. I had no idea what a physical disaster I was.

But Laurent was waiting in my living room, so whatever salvaging I was going to do, it had better be quick.

I splashed water on my face, brushed my hair and dashed on a little mascara and lipstick. My black sweater was rumpled from the car and my pants had long since lost their crease. I had no idea where Laurent was taking me to eat, so decided against jeans. The black trousers would have to do, but the sweater? No. I looked in the mostly-empty armoire. My choices were limited, given that most of my wardrobe was still in transit. But I did have a midnight blue – “starry night” according to the tag – sweater with iridescent threads woven around the scooped neck. My dark ash-blonde hair with a few strawberry and gold highlights that were supposed to hide the grey lied against the midnight blue. Well, this was as good as it was going to get.

Deep breath. Straighten the shoulders. Smile.

Live my life.
Patricia Bond. From My Balcony (Kindle Locations 368-393). Kindle Edition.

There’s a lot of inner dialog like the scene above, all of it part of Diana’s healing.

Some fun encounters, some touring, the jerk ex-husband and plenty of innuendo make this a delightful and at times sensual journey to finding oneself.

Anytime. Anyplace. Love is all that matters.

They say your childhood dreams and aspirations are your purest, truest desires. They are your destiny.

If that’s true, my destiny was written before I could even read on my own. Like most authors, I’ve carried on a life-long love affair with books. From the time I was about eight years old, my vision of life as a grown-up included having a dozen children and a room at the top of an old Victorian mansion where I would spend my days looking out at the sea and writing stories.

A dozen kids and solitude? Hey – I was eight. What did I know?

Except that I wanted to be a writer.

I couldn’t decide what to write, opting mostly for mysteries until I realized I couldn’t plot an escape route from a three-sided phone booth, much less a murder. It was during a six-week bedside vigil when mom was in the ICU that my sister introduced me to historical romances. I devoured them. The first time I thought “I can do this,” I felt a calm settle over me and a feeling of “coming home.” I was ready to run.

Life… Juggling marriage, a husband with a full-time job and full-time school, four children (I had to down-size my original vision – economics, you know), multiple jobs, my best friend’s cancer diagnosis that led both of us down a metaphysical path as we spent hours talking about destiny, intention, attraction, energy work and more. Life experiences. Rich and full.

It’s all led to this.

Where I was meant to be – right from the beginning.

Ms. Bond lives in the best place on earth – Western New York – not quite close enough to see the waterfront, but close enough that you’ll often find her there, camera and notebook in hand, patient, hero-inspiring husband nearby. “Only” four children, not a dozen, but count in their spouses and grandchildren, and she’s getting closer.

She may still try her hand at mysteries. She hasn’t seen a three-sided phone booth in years.

Bianca Devlin’s work is her life. Now, she’s finally taking a vacation…and guerillas hit her resort to kidnap a diplomat’s son. She does the only thing that makes sense—intervene to save the child’s life. Being dragged into the jungle with a scared kid she’s determined to protect was definitely not how she saw this trip ending.

After she returns to Texas, the last person Bianca expected to see was Sergeant Carlos “Cage” Castillo, the member of Bravo Team WOLF that helped rescue her. Nevertheless, there he is, living across the street from the house she just bought. The coincidence is alarming, but she has to admit, his presence isn’t entirely unwanted.

But there’s something off about Cage—the way he can move without a sound or the weird way his eyes seem to almost glow at times. And how can Bianca manage her growing attraction, when everything she knows about him and his reason for being there, turns out to be a lie?

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

Something I can depend on in every Heather Long book is  a strong woman and an Alpha male who isn’t afraid to give in to her. In this book our heroine takes strength and courage to a whole new level.

Bianca isn’t a soldier, she’s an aid worker on her first vacation in years. Lounging by the pool enjoying the tropical sun, her relaxation is interrupted by a bunch of armed men grabbing a young boy. Without thinking she attempts to thwart them and ends up taken with the boy.

As Bravo Team WOLF moves in to extract them, something unexpected happens, a nick, a bite, something. Did Bianca imagine a huge wolf releasing her from her captor?

Carlos ‘Cage’ stays by her side as much as possible during her initial recovery. He has to stay close, he has to find out if he has changed her life forever. A mistake his father, his Alpha will never forgive.

Now the fun begins as he takes up residence in a house across the street from her and worms his way to friendship even as he tried to verify if he bit her.

A favorite scene is when Cage follows her while she walks, he is concerned for her well-being as it’s not even dawn.

Leaving, she moved slowly and deliberately down the steps, favoring her right leg. Her feet had been scratched, bruised and damaged. Even last evening when she sat on her deck, bare feet stretched out to rest on the rail, he’d seen the angry marks on them.

As she reached the sidewalk, she paused, hands on her hips and looked left then right. Her gaze swept back and forth, and it was then he realized her lips were moving. Even with night vision, he couldn’t read what she said. Finally, she turned toward the uphill rise on her right and began walking.

At four in the morning.

In a city she didn’t know.

A neighborhood she’d just moved to.

Cage growled, then hurried to throw on shorts, a t-shirt, and running shoes. In less than three minutes, he’d dressed, descended the stairs and let himself out of the front. Jogging, he followed her scent easily. Even at her limping walk, she’d made it to the end of the block and continued around the curve.

He’d almost caught up to her when it occurred to him that running at her in the dark might not be the wisest course. Slowing, he opened his mouth to warn her he was there, when she spun and slammed a taser into his side. The voltage sent a cascade through his nervous system. One minute he was standing, the next he lay on the ground staring at her dumbly.

“Oh shit!” Bianca cursed, then turned off the flickering taser. Kneeling, she grimaced and touched his arm. “Are you okay?”

“No,” he said, slowly, not sure he trusted his voice. His wolf felt as stunned as he was. The shocks rioting along his nerve endings zapped him in lessening increments. Tingles spread throughout his limbs. His tongue seemed permanently rooted to the roof of his mouth. “No.”

The weight of her hand on his arm riveted him, helping to ground out the solid scrambling she’d sent through his system. Wolves were hardy beings, and they could take a solid beating. Most minor injuries they could heal in a short time. More serious wounds—bullet wounds, knife stabs, even claw rips—they could heal by shifting.

Electricity ripping through them? That hurt on multiple levels, and not even a wolf could recover from the stunning effect swiftly. Maybe it had something to do with the disconnect he felt with his wolf right now. The animal seemed dazed, and distant.

“Cage?”

He’d almost forgotten Bianca was there; her fingers traced over his arm.

“I’m really sorry, I just heard someone coming at me and it’s dark and…”

And she took his ass out with a taser.

“No problem,” he managed to grunt around the pain. Sitting up cost him some dignity as his synapses still seemed to be short firing.

“What can I do?” She’d gone to one knee, and strain showed in the tightness of her mouth. Sitting brought him eye to eye with her, and her luscious lips she slicked with her tongue as she licked them in. Concern radiated in her scent, along with embarrassment. She grasped his arm, as though she planned to help him to his feet.

“Gimme a minute,” he managed after loosening his jaw. His teeth had been grinding and it took him a moment to recognize the sensation. How much voltage had been in that little device?

“I so sorry,” she apologized again. “I didn’t know it was you.”

“I know, you did fine.” His wolf seemed to stumble into awareness within him. The animal felt drunk. Yeah, tasers were definitely not their friend. Forcing himself to stand, he suffered the indignity of Bianca bracing him, though it did allow him to wrap an arm around her. She fit perfectly beneath the curve of his arm, even as she pressed her hands against his chest and back to complete her effort. The contact of her body alongside his sent a fresh wave of electricity through him.

She was close enough to kiss. To taste. To…

Flashing lights sliced through the darkness, and Cage growled as he turned to face the newcomers. Shaky or not, he could still protect Bianca. Next to him, she stiffened a fraction as the black and white rolled up to pause next to them.

“You folks all right?” The officer in the driver’s seat gave him a long, studying look. His manner was warily cordial. Then his gaze went to Bianca.

“Ma’am?” The officer slid out of the driver’s seat and stood.

“We’re fine, officer,” Bianca spoke before Cage could say anything. A growl rumbled in his chest, then Bianca rubbed a slow circle with her palm against the center of his sternum. The agitation settled immediately. “Don’t let the bruise fool you, I was involved in an incident in Costa Rica a few days ago. I’m still healing.”

“And you?” The officer didn’t seem to doubt her story, though his attention returned to Cage. “Are you drunk son?”

Was he drunk? What the hell kind of question was that? Straightening, he forced himself not to lean on Bianca, but she didn’t let him go. A good thing, he still staggered a little on his feet and not leaning on her, he could straighten. Then he met the officer’s gaze and held it. The cop was doing his job, good man. But Bianca was his to protect, not the cop’s.

The man began to sweat under the weight of his stare, though he fought to hold it. Finally his gaze cut away.

“Not drunk, took a misstep in the dark.” It chaffed his pride to admit to clumsiness. Approaching Bianca at speed in the dark, had definitely been a misstep. He had the taser burn to prove it.

“Well if you’re both fine, I’ll leave you to it.” The officer didn’t sound certain.

“We are. We’re new to the neighborhood, just out for a morning walk–well he’s going for a run. I was just going to walk to Bonnie’s Donut House. I heard it’s down this way.”

“It’s about six or seven blocks, not an easy walk…” Fresh skepticism rifled his tone.

“I like long walks. It lets me get to know the area,” Bianca slid her response in before Cage could just tell the officer to fuck off and leave them alone. Arguing with law enforcement wasn’t a good idea. Cops in Austin were decent, but better not to give them cause to detain him, much less Bianca.

“Well you’re headed in the right direction. She’ll be open by five.” The cop gave them another long, measuring look before he slid back into the driver’s seat. The flashing lights ceased, then he gave them a small wave and pulled away.

“Whew,” Bianca blew out a breath, then her attention was on him again. “How are you feeling?”

“Positively electric.” He couldn’t take the worry in her eyes or her manner. Better to take the burden away. The fact she’d tased him had been his own damn fault. He shouldn’t have charged at her.
Heather Long. Bitten Under Fire ARC (Kindle Locations 985-1038). Kindle Edition.

Okay so maybe I laughed a little harder than I should have, but damn she tased him!

Plenty of tension as he waits for signs she might be turning. I loved his conversations with his abuela, she pulls no punches. Lots of little things snuck in that had me giggling or reminiscing and there were definitely some tears as well.

So we have some family drama, a possible bite that could change Bianca’s life forever, and a growing attraction that cannot be denied.

I can’t wait for the next book in this series!

ARC Review! Sunset Flames – Baytown Boys Book 6 by Maryann Jordan

The Baytown Boys

Military duty called them away to war zones, but after tours overseas, the group of friends found their way back home as men, seeking the peaceful little seaside town. Now, the band of brothers, together once more, work to provide a place for less fortunate veterans to call home.

Sunset Flames
Baytown Boys Book 6

Zac Hamilton, one of the original Baytown Boys, had returned from the Navy to become the Fire Chief for the small town. But, the Eastern Shore was gripped in fear as an arsonist continued to set fires all over the county just after sunset.

Madelyn Stover returned reluctantly to Baytown to bury her estranged father, but finding journals he had written left her wondering what secrets her parent’s marriage had held.

A fire on her property led Zac to the beautiful newcomer and as they grew closer, discovered they had more in common than either realized. When the arsonist strikes too close to home again, can Zac keep his promise to keep her safe?

**The language and sexual scenes in the book are similar to what you would see in an R rated movie, therefore the book is for 18+ readers.**

I’ve really come to love Baytown, it’s small town togetherness and shore atmosphere has me running to read more.

In this one get to know Zac, an original ‘Baytown Boy’. He’s now the fire chief and as such has more than one responsibility to the town. He also supervises and trains both rescue workers and the volunteer firefighters.

Madelyn never thought she would return to Baytown. Her mother had taken away as a young teen and divorced her father. Only one disappointing meeting between father and daughter had occurred over the years. Now her father has died and named here his heir.

A chance meeting with Jillian and the girls leads to Maddie having support and help where she expected none. The American Legion and the auxiliary step up and help provide a beautiful service for the father she hardly knows. It’s then she meets Zac, after he gives a poignant eulogy.

This is a favorite scene, when Zac stops by while the arrogant David Wills is evaluating her father’s antiques.

Another knock at the door sounded and, expecting David’s assistant, she yelled for him to come in as she crawled over several items. Tripping over a low stool, she landed in a heap just as the door opened. Palms stinging, she looked up in embarrassment, seeing Zac standing in the doorway.

“Uh, hi…” she stammered, blushing as he bent forward to assist her to her feet. Even standing, she still had to lean her head way back to look into his face. When she had been near him at the funeral she was wearing heels but now, in her flat shoes, she realized how tall he was.

“Are you all right?” he asked, his hands still on her waist. “I came by to see if you would like to get lunch, but I didn’t expect to have to use my EMT skills.”

“Nothing hurt but my pride,” she quipped, attempting to cover her embarrassment. The warmth of his fingers on her waist traveled through her body making her very aware of the effect he had on her libido. His dark hair looked as though he had just swept his hand though it and her fingers twitched at her side, itching to see if it was as soft as it appeared.

Hearing a noise, his gaze shot behind her, his eyebrows lifting. “Did I stop by at a bad time?”

“No,” she rushed, stepping back. “David… Mr. Wills is here… helping me with—”

“Fuckin’ hell,” Zac said under his breath as he stepped inside and viewed the mess that he assumed was a living room. “What the hell happened in here?”

She opened her mouth to explain, but David popped his head around the corner, surprise on his face. His eyes dropped to Zac’s hands still on her waist. “Oh,” he said, “I didn’t realize you had company. I thought we could go out to lunch and then I could take you to my office so we can start the appraisal process.”

Deciding to keep his hands where they were, Zac noticed she stepped slightly closer to him. Inwardly fist-pumping, he smiled pleasantly at David.

“I don’t think so, David, but thank you so much for what you’ve done today. I’ll see you tomorrow and we can continue the downstairs. If you can, bring your computer tomorrow. That would probably save time, be more efficient.”

David’s eyes narrowed slightly at the dismissal, but his lips curled into a smile. “Of course. I’ll see you bright and early tomorrow.” With a curt nod toward Zac, he walked outside.

Zac shut the door behind David and swung his gaze back to hers. “I get the feeling he wasn’t too happy with my arrival.”

Blushing, she leaned forward and whispered, “I think I messed up his plans when I said I didn’t want to rush the process.”

He wondered about her change of heart, but then his gaze drifted over the furniture and the sheer volume of her father’s collection would take some serious time.

Madelyn observed him staring at the mess and felt her blush deepening. “I… uh…” Sighing, she said, “I can’t think of any way to explain this, other than to just say, welcome to my father’s world.”

Uncertain what to say, Zac nodded, his gaze moving away from the conglomeration of furniture to her face. “Hey, don’t be embarrassed. I was just startled at the size of the antique collection your dad had. At least he collected something worthwhile. My old man just collected debts.”

Madelyn opened her mouth, then closed it quickly. His words were so brutally honest and yet, said with a hint of humor.

He grinned, disarming her, and added, “Sorry if that was a bit too much. My dad’s faults were well known in town, so I forget that not everyone knew him.” Observing her gaze avoiding his, Zac said, “So, what’s going on here?”

“My dad collected antiques and it seems that he filled the house.” She sighed, adding, “I’m afraid the whole house looks like this. I had no idea, of course, until I got here the other day.”

His gaze narrowed as he stepped further into the room. Madelyn watched as his eyes not only travelled over the furniture, but swept the ceiling as well. He walked through the room, calling over his shoulder, “The kitchen this way?”

“Uh… yeah… uh…” she said, hastening after him. Rounding the corner, she saw him looking up at the ceiling.

He grabbed a kitchen chair and stood, quickly removing the cover of the fire alarm. Her eyes were drawn to the skin now showing where his t-shirt rode up. Good Lord. His abs were tight and, from what she could see, well delineated. His tan skin was smooth with just a hint of hair leading to the top of his low-slung jeans. It took a few seconds of ogling before she lifted her eyes and saw his blazing at her in anger.

“There’re no batteries in this,” he growled. “Your dad had a house full of wooden furniture, like kindling ready to burn, and no fuckin’ fire alarm?”

Snapped out of her lust, Madelyn opened her mouth a couple of times, shutting it when nothing came out. “I… I guess so.”

“Are you staying here?”

Nodding, she said, “Yeah. I figured I might as well stay here so that I can work on the house easier. Not to mention, it’s cheaper than a week or more staying at a hotel.” She looked around at the mess in the kitchen and her shoulder sagged. “I have no idea how Dad lived like this but, then, I have no idea how he lived at all.”

Zac heard the defeat in her voice and dropped his chin to his chest. Heaving a sigh, he looked up, his heart aching for the sadness in her voice. He knew a lot about regret and wondered if she felt the same.

“Look,” he said, “I’m sorry. Really. It’s just in my nature to look at things through a safety perspective. I’m sure David walked in and viewed a paradise of antiques which must have made you feel good, and then I come in and start barkin’ and make you feel like crap.” He easily hopped down from the chair and set it to the side, next to a pile of other chairs stacked on top of each other. He stepped over, placing his hands on her shoulders, her body feeling so much more fragile than he imagined it would. Now that he had seen the inside of Lenny’s house, he realized what a massive undertaking she was forced to deal with.

“Hey, why don’t I get you out of the house, take you to lunch, and we can pick up some batteries on the way back.”

Madelyn stared for a moment, indecision filling her mind, before she nodded slowly and her lips curved slightly. “Okay… yeah, that’d be good.”

Laughing, he threw his hand over his heart, claiming, “You’re killing my ego, Maddie. I was afraid I was going to get shot down like David.”

Narrowing her eyes, she poked him in the chest. “Somehow, I think, Zac, that your ego doesn’t often get bruised. You strike me as the type who doesn’t exactly have problems getting lunch dates… or any other kind of dates.” As soon as the words passed her lips, she inwardly grimaced. He probably thinks I’ve been thinking of him… and dates. She hated the blush she felt climbing up her face and was grateful he appeared not to notice.

“Nah, I work too much to have many dates,” he admitted. Sticking his elbow out, he said, “Come on, let’s get out of the fire trap and have some good pub food.”

“Finn’s? I haven’t been there,” she smiled. “Well, not since I was a little girl.”

“Then you’re in for a treat,” he promised.
Maryann Jordan. Sunset Flames: Baytown Boys Series – ARC copy not for sale (Kindle Locations 849-906).

I really loved the build of this relationship, from friends to friends with benefits then an official couple. This book is also much more that just the extremely hot relationship. There is plenty of tension and suspense with a hunt for an arsonist and lots of soul searching for both Zac and Maddie.

I laughed and cried enjoying every interaction, every get together with the other Baytown regulars, and I truly did not figure out the arsonist.

I can’t wait for the next book in this series, I think it will be the new addition to Baytown who shows up at the end.

I have always been an avid reader. My early memories were of my mother taking me to the library and allowing me to check out as many books as I could carry. My favorite books were checked out numerous times and read over and over. I would use my Barbie dolls to play out the scenes in books (such as Nancy Drew!).

I have written as a hobby for many years (probably since childhood). I have written devotionals, autobiographical writings about having a severely handicapped, medically fragile child, about my mother’s Alzheimer’s, and other subjects that interest me.

I joke that I “cut my romance teeth” on the old historical romance books. In 2013, I started a blog to showcase wonderful writers. In 2014, I finally gave in to the characters in my head pleading for their story to be told. Thus, Emma’s Home was created.

I worked as a counselor in a high school and was involved in education for the past 30 years, until retiring in 2015. I have been married to a wonderfully patient man for 35 years and have 2 adult, very supportive daughters. When writing, my dog or one of my cats will usually be found in my lap!

Loving her is the biggest fight of his life…

Home from the Marines, Noah Cortez has a secret he doesn’t want his oldest friend, Kristina Moore, to know. It kills him to push her away, especially when he’s noticing just how sexy and confident she’s become in his absence. But, angry and full of fight, he’s not the same man anymore either. Which is why Warrior Fight Club sounds so good.

Kristina loves teaching, but she wants more out of life. She wants Noah—the boy she’s crushed on and waited for. Except Noah is all man now—in ways both oh so good and troubling, too. Still, she wants who he’s become—every war-hardened inch. And when they finally stop fighting their attraction, it’s everything Kristina never dared hope for.

But Noah is secretly spiraling, and when he lashes out, it threatens what he and Kristina have found. The brotherhood of the fight club helps him confront his demons, but only Noah can convince the woman he loves that he’s finally ready to fight for everything.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogo

This story is a journey, from war to home and adjusting to civilian life. Noah didn’t come home unscathed and his injuries aren’t visible. An IED took most of his vision and his hearing on his left side, a byproduct of traumatic brain injury. Now those are only the physical part of the problem. He is also suffering from PTSD and the methods he’s been presented with to help, just aren’t working for him.

Kristina is his best friend and she wants to help him, but more than that, for the first time she is seeing him as more than a friend. She’s always known he was hot, but the years he spent in the Marines have taken that to a whole new level.  A level that has her thinking of him in a way she didn’t think was possible. Especially after a failed kiss years ago.

This book is very emotional on many levels. From the attraction between Kristina and Noah, the anxiety attacks, the flashbacks and so much more.

I found myself in tears more than once, as Noah falls deeper and starts the slow path back up.

I loved the way Laura brought different PTSD treatments to light, one of which leads Noah to the fight club.

An inspiring, sexy, emotional read that I couldn’t put down. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

“Noah, are you down here?” Kristina called from the top of the basement steps.

Despite the lack of response, she continued down and crossed the room to the mostly closed door in the back corner–Noah’s bedroom since he’d returned just before last Christmas. God, Kristina had thought she’d received the best Christmas present ever–Noah, home from Iraq, safe and sound.

Well, mostly sound, anyway. An IED blast had taken the hearing and most of his vision on his left side, and he’d struggled with bad migraines and equilibrium problems when he’d first returned. But he was home and he was alive, and having him back again had made it feel like she could finally breathe after years of knowing he was in danger every second of every day.

She knocked softly. “Hey Noah, it’s me.”

All she heard was a long exhale of breath, but it was enough.

Why hadn’t he answered her? Her stomach clenched as she pushed open the door far enough to see Noah standing in the dark doorway to his bathroom, his back against the door jamb, his arms crossed, and his head hanging on his big shoulders.

She didn’t need to ask if he was okay, because he was radiating not okay loud and clear. Kristina walked right up to him. “What’s going on?” she asked. Dim light from the rec room filtered over him, allowing her to just make out the tight clench of his square jaw, the narrowed cast of his dark brown eyes, the harsh set of his beautiful mouth.

Wait. What? Where had that little observation come from?

Noah shook his head, forcing Kristina to drop the ridiculous line of thought.

She stepped closer so that she could look more directly into his eyes. “Come on, Noah. It’s me.” She ached for him to open up, but what she noticed even more was the low buzz rushing through her body. From how close she stood to all his taut hardness. It wasn’t like she was just noticing that Noah was hot, like, dayum hot, but nearly five years in the Marines had matured him and built hard muscle that hadn’t been there before. And clearly her body was just noticing, probably because they hadn’t had the chance to spend much time together since he’d gotten back.

“Kristina,” he said, his voice so low it was nearly a whisper, or a plea. He leaned his forehead against hers. It was such a sweet, needful gesture that Kristina’s chest seized.

“First, I’m hugging you. Then we’re talking, buddy,” she said, wrapping her arms around his big shoulders and planting her cheek against his chest. The embrace wasn’t unusual-they’d always been affectionate with each other. She’d lay against him while they watched a movie or he’d sling an arm over her shoulders while they were out together. When things were bad with her dad, he’d hold her when she finally gave into her grief about it and cried. That’s how they’d always been.

He embraced her right back and leaned his face against her hair.

After a long moment, Kristina pulled away–

Noah wouldn’t let her go. His grip on her tightened, and he held her fast against him. Was he breathing faster? Was he trembling?

Against her belly, he hardened.

Kristina’s breath caught in her throat. Noah was aroused…by her? Or just, like, in her general vicinity? Or…? She swallowed hard as her thoughts flew.

As they stood there, suspended in the dark, stolen moment, the air around them flashed hot and closed in, narrowing the world to all the places their bodies touched. His erection grew, pressing against her with more insistence. Heat bloomed over her skin everywhere and she held herself perfectly still. Because this was different. This was not friendly. This was more.

A strange tension wrapped around them, and it scared and attracted Kristina in equal measure. She shuddered out a breath as her body came to life against his. Her breathing quickened, her nipples peaked, her core clenched.

Noah made a noise in the back of his throat like a moan, and his arms tightened around her, pulling their bodies totally flush.

Kristina’s breath caught at the hard press of his body and at the shocking arousal it unleashed in her.

This is Noah. This is Noah. This is Noah.

But it didn’t seem to matter to her body. The soft cotton of her dress became heavy and irritating against her skin, and all she wanted was for it to be off. So he could be all over her. This sudden, intoxicating need was brand new to her-in general and certainly with Noah. She wasn’t a virgin, but she’d never felt with another man the kind of desire rocketing through her just then. And all they’d done was touch.

Why was this happening?

Her hips shifted without her meaning to do it, and it made her belly grind against all that hardness.

Noah hissed in her ear. His fingertips dug into her back…and then wandered, one hand pressing low against her hip, one skimming up her neck into her hair. Holding her tight. Bringing her closer.

She was half sure she was imagining that they were locked inside this raging bubble of attraction, except that his heart thundered beneath where her head rested, his breathing had gone rough, and his skin felt every bit as feverish as hers.

She had to stop this…whatever this was.

Tilting her head back, the words were on the tip of her tongue. Her eyes locked with his, and even in the dimness she could see that they were blazing hot and almost predatory in their directness. It stole her capacity to speak, because she was unequivocally sure he’d never looked at her like that. Need roared off of him and through her, making her heart beat like a bass drum.

Kristina swallowed hard. What would she do if he kissed her? One kissing experiment aside, she’d never had to ask that in regard to him. Another question followed close behind: what would she do if he didn’t?

Kindle Worlds is Closing! Here are some of my favorite worlds and Authors within them!

Kindle Worlds will be gone forever
July 16th 2018!

This deeply saddens me, I have found many new to me authors by seeing them in these worlds.

It was always a place to find quick, inexpensive reads that blended with another author’s characters and settings.

I have heard that some of the World owners are going to continue them on their own and some will need to have an acknowledgement of the originating series before republishing. Yet others may go away completely. For some worlds no decisions have made as to their fate, as this news just broke.

This is a response to a reader friend from Amazon:

For five years, Kindle Worlds has been thriving, engaging writers and readers who enjoy writing in one another’s worlds, and we’re proud of the work we’ve done together. While we are closing Kindle Worlds, Amazon is constantly innovating on behalf of our authors and readers, and we look forward to continuing to do so.

As of May 17th, Kindle Worlds will no longer be accepting new submissions. Previously published Kindle Worlds stories will no longer be available for sale on Amazon.com on or around July 16th. The Kindle Worlds website will be closed on August 29th.

Rest assured previously purchased or borrowed Kindle Worlds stories will remain unaffected.

With that in mind and since the time is short until they are gone, I wanted to share with you some of my favorite Worlds and Authors from them. I hope you will take the time to browse through these links and possibly enjoy them as much as I have.

I put the link I have for the main world and then covers that link to Amazon for individual authors within those worlds that I have read and enjoyed.

I would also like to thank the owners of the worlds that so many wonderful authors wanted to play in, Elle James, Susan Stoker, Paige Tyler, Desiree Holt, Sable Hunter, Millie Taiden, Carly Phillips, Robyn Peterman, Cat Johnson, Eliza Gayle, Erin Nicholas, and Roxanne St.Claire.

HAPPY READING!!!

ARC Review Seized by the Lawman – Lawmen of Wyoming Book 3 By Rhonda Lee Carver

Seized By The Lawman
Lawmen of Wyoming Book 3
By
Rhonda Lee Carver

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Special Agent Nixon Cade wasn’t looking for anything long term when he met Melissia, but it turned out she left a lasting impression. When he landed a special assignment, a favor for the boss to help his daughter, Nix found out it was the very woman who had haunted his every waking hour. There are lines a man wouldn’t—shouldn’t—cross. He never messed with the boss’s daughter. No matter how beautiful, brave, intelligent, mystifying she was. Nix would have to dig deep—very deep—to find the restraint to keep his hands, and his thoughts, to himself.

Admittedly, Melissia “Melly” Everhart hadn’t always had her life in order. Jumping from one impulsive act to another, she found herself pregnant from a one-night stand and realized it was time to settle down, find stability for her child. The best place to raise a child was her homestead, Shy Brooke. However, to attain ownership, she must prove to her father that she is responsible and capable of running a ranch. It was just like her father to expect her to jump through hoops…and this hoop involved the one man who she was connected to, although he had no clue she carried his child. But if she wanted the ranch she had to keep her secret safe until the deed was in her name.

Nix had made a promise to show Melly the ropes of running a ranch, but he could barely keep his head on straight. She went from hot to cold and he suspected something just wasn’t right…

A shadowy figure watched and waited for the opportune time to seek vengeance. He’d waited seven long years to make Cade pay for what he did. It was too good to be true when fate handed him the woman, and the baby was icing on the cake. No better way to make a man pay than to hold his family as leverage.

Will Nix find the truth in time? Will Melly pay the price for Nix?

Nothing is worse than a meddling parent, especially when that parent is holding something over your head.

Melly wants her inheritance, the ranch that was her mother’s. Unfortunately her father, wants proof she’s ready to take the reins before he signs the papers.

Nix has just started working for Carter and now he’s put in a very awkward position. Help out on the ranch and report whether or not Melly is ready for this responsibility. Big glitch, he had a one-night stand with the red-haired beauty. Of course finding out she had been a reality show star, kind of makes him wonder about her sincerity too.

Now there are a lot of secrets, a scary encounter, and plenty of sexual tension to boot.

As secrets get revealed the family drama increases, and a possible mole in Carter’s team has everyone on edge.

Definitely a page turner!

Book 2 is coming…Here’s My review of When Danger Bites – Bravo Team WOLF Book 1. With Some Insight from Heather Long

They’re weapons of lethal force—
wild, clawed, and dangerous.

When Danger Bites
Bravo Team Wolf Book 1
By
USA Today Bestselling Author
Heather Long

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

I wondered about the process of creating wolf shifter marines and Heather replied with

A Behind the Scenes of Bravo Team Wolf.

When Danger Bites, Bravo Team WOLF Book 1, introduces us all to the wolves of Bravo Team. Though I envisioned it as the first book, as I wrote it, I began to wonder if I should have made it later in the series in part because I had so much world-building to do, and in part because maintaining character integrity consistent with military service while building out the passionate wolves proved a fine tight rope to walk!

The Characters

First on the board was Corporal Kaitlyn Amador human, dedicated to the Marines, the daughter of a Marine and an intelligence specialist. I knew she had to not only possess the physical chops to excel in the field, but also the discipline and intelligence to recognize what the hell was going on. Inspirations for Kaitlyn included 1st Lt. Shaye Haver and Capt. Kristen Griest who were the first female Army Ranger graduates from Fort Benning, GA in 2015.

She’s a badass, driven to excel and under pressure from her superior officer to follow orders and find out what makes Bravo Team WOLF so damn special. This presented a serious conflict for Kaitlyn. She’s a Marine. She wants to support her fellow Marines and digging into their history of success feels like questioning their honor and she hates it.

Which brings us to Jasper Raymond, Captain and the lead for Bravo Team WOLF. He’s a shifter, yes. And he volunteered for this gig to help protect his pack. The leadership of the Bravo Team is determined by the strongest among those sent by the various packs, so he’s earned this position. When his human CO hands him the assignment to wash Kaitlyn out, he’s frustrated because a) she’s human and b) she’s a tough cookie that he met before finding out she was assigned to his team.

There isn’t anything Jax wouldn’t do to protect the secrecy of the wolves, but screwing Kaitlyn over impinges on his sense of fair play and honor.

The Story

So where did all of this come from? Several years ago, I kicked off a very popular series called Always a Marine focusing on the healing Marines needed whether it was emotional, mental, or physical. The series remains one of my all time favorites, and I keep thinking I need to go back and visit my peeps at Mike’s Place (more on that later). In 2014, I launched my Wolves of Willow Bend series with wolf shifters.

I can honestly say I’ve loved all the characters in these books, and enjoyed weaving those stories. Several times while writing Always a Marine, readers asked if I’d ever add a paranormal/supernatural element, but I felt that didn’t have a place in the very contemporary grounded setting. Similarly, in Wolves of Willow Bend we met characters with a military background or who volunteered to serve during great wars, but their service was never the focus.

Marrying these two notions allowed me to create Bravo Team WOLF. Kind of cool, right?

My Favorite Scene

Choosing my favorite scene is a lot like choosing my favorite book or character, to be honest I love them all and I kind of have to, you know? That’s how I write the books and finish them. That said, I did have a couple of favorites.

The first scene is the opening one when Kat and Jax first meet on the side of the road. They are both minding their own business when her flat tire attracts his attention riding by. He can’t not help and she’s perfectly capable of doing the job. From the get go, these two were stubborn, charming, and determined not only to do their jobs but to excel. Just how do they get passed this wild attraction they feel for each other?

The second scene is a minor one, but it made me laugh is when Kat encounters Silver in the communal showers. His playfulness combined with gentle ribbing set a tone for what would make Silver a great ally for Kat later in the book, and at the same time, left me hungry to write more Silver!

Biggest Change from beginning to published

The characters pretty much remain exactly who they were except the team went from eleven wolves to eight. That meant three wolves Sullivan, Sawyer, and Chaney were removed and their scenes/traits blended into the other wolves. It makes sense in part because Silver, Sullivan and Sawyer all sound similar when read.

In the early drafts, we had a lot of training scenes I mean a lot. We could have called Kaitlyn, GI Kat, and we wouldn’t have been far off. Part of writing those scenes helped me determine Kat’s true character so massaging some out and adding in new scenes to display her more playful side going to Abel’s for the first time with Jax and discovering the guys were gone in the middle of the night. Not to mention a strange encounter with a wolf on base?

It made the story stronger and tightened the connection between Jax and Kat’s attraction and the conflict of their goals.

When Danger Bites kicks off a whole new series, with a host of characters, history, and tales just waiting to be told. So grab your copy and brace yourself we’re going to have a lot of fun.

Oorah.

Buttoned-up Corporal Kaitlyn Amador is dangerous on every level. As a human, she poses a threat to Marine Captain Jax Raymond’s special Force Recon unit. Though the team has a reputation among the other recon units, only their commanding officer knows their secret. As a woman, the danger posed is entirely different. Jax can survive the temptation for only so long before his wolf takes over and pursues what it wants.

Military intelligence specialist Corporal Kaitlyn Amador is the first woman in the Marines to be assigned to a recon team. And everyone’s watching her. Her mission? Not only prove herself worthy of her place in the group, but uncover the mystery of why Bravo Team is so successful. A mission that gets more difficult every time she’s near Jax…

Watch the Trailer

As many of you know I am a big fan of Shifter and Military romance. So when the two were combined I started drooling even before I read the book. It takes talent to merge these two with a purpose none can argue. Heather does this brilliantly.

Now the Military has rules, but so do the Wolves. In this tale we have wolves representing different packs to satisfy the pact made with the government. The only problem is wolves don’t fail, they succeed where others fail and injuries are quickly healed. Bravo Team is a recon unit and they excel at what they do, thus leading to suspicion as to why they have an impeccable track record.

Corporal Kaitlin Amador has worked hard for her chance at recon, unfortunately her boss in military intelligence has made this a mission to find out their secret.

Jax isn’t happy about having a human join his team, worse it’s a woman. A woman he finds himself attracted to on many levels.

This is a favorite scene when she has dinner with the team for the first time.

The family talk turned to talk of women and mates. Since none of the current team were mated, Patterson and Silver compared notes on their current conquests. Keeping score in many areas promoted healthy competition. Keeping score of the number of women they bedded during their leave bordered on the insensitive.

Amador didn’t appear all that impressed, however. In fact, she snorted when Patterson detailed three women in one night.

“No way you had them all together. No man has that kind of stamina.” Interestingly, she didn’t seem remotely offended by the sex talk. If anything, she sounded more bemused. “Before you tell me you had three women in three separate times in one night, I don’t know that I would own up to that in public.”

Despite the sound of knives and forks scraping against plates, the laughter in the room dwindled. Amador earned their attention. Jax met Kurt’s questioning gaze and shook his head. Part of being on the team meant interacting with the others, and he trusted his wolves to a point.

“I don’t only own up to it, lady, I’m proud of my accomplishment.” From a Wyoming pack, Patterson had been one of the shyest wolves during his first few weeks assigned to the team. The man didn’t like to say much, unless he had something to actually say. A wonderful habit, one they could probably all benefit from. “Since you seem so curious, let me be clear. The first time around it was one woman. When we were done, I went back to the bar. Couple of hours later, it was two women. Three women, one night.”

Turning her fork in her mashed potatoes, Amador met Patterson’s proud gaze with a considering look. “Let me guess.” She elongated the words, but something in her tone called to Jax, beckoned him to pay attention. A hint of knowledge, like she had a secret none of them did. His was not the only focus she’d gained. “It was a threesome, but you weren’t the one in the middle.”

Sharp shock rippled through Patterson’s scent, too piquant to be anything but honesty. Kat had nailed him to the wall. The other wolves didn’t even wait for him to respond before their laughter roared to life.

“How the hell did you know?” Genuine curiosity, not anger marked his words.

“Unlike some of you boys, I don’t kiss and tell.” On that note, Amador took another bite of her mashed potatoes. The quick call-out earned her a measure of goodwill amongst his men. If not for the fact that he was supposed to be making her want to leave, Jax’s would’ve been cheering her on.

“You do kiss, right?” Butler asked from directly across the table. He made sure not to meet Jax’s gaze when he asked the question.

“Wouldn’t you like to know,” Amador responded, the verbal riposte eliciting another round of laughter.

Yes, I would. He shouldn’t. Jax recognized the irony of wanting to know more about her—especially her kissing habits. Irony didn’t quench his thirst.

“Tell us about you,” said Troy Norton, Lance Corporal and the only wolf in the unit with a touch of a healing gift, turning the tables and the focus back on Amador.

“Not much to tell. I’m here because the rulebooks are changing and since women are now allowed in combat and in combat roles, we have to make the attempt at honoring not only the spirit of the law but also in following orders.” Direct, to the point, and respectful to boot. The woman really did nothing to make him dislike her, dammit. If he could find fault with her, it would make his life easier.

“I doubt that.” Norton had finished his second plate and, out of deference to their human tablemate, seemed to be fighting the urge to go get thirds. An act not shared by either Sawyer or Jeremiah. They were already working on their fourth plates. “Just saying women are allowed in combat doesn’t automatically qualify every woman for a chance to run with us.”

“I’ve run with the big dogs before.” Her quick quip sent a bolt of electricity through the men. More curious than concerned, Jax let her take the lead on this one. “I’ve been a Marine long enough to understand the difference. Don’t get me wrong, I plan to kick all of your asses and look good while doing it. The final say on my status belongs to Captain Raymond.”

The final say actually belong to the colonel, but Jax didn’t bother to correct her on that one. Bravo Team consisted of wolves, and she wasn’t one of them. It didn’t matter how fast she could go or how well she performed, she wasn’t a wolf and never would be.
Heather Long. When-Danger-Bites ARC (Kindle Locations 955-992). Kindle Edition.

Lots of quick wit, snark and sexual tension all with the intense training for Bravo Team.

Kat is one of my favorite Heather heroines, she is snarky, brave and above all loyal.

I almost felt sorry for Jax, he is in soooo much trouble with her.

A page turner with plenty of laughter, heat and action. I can’t wait to read the next in the series.

Black Dawn – Book 1

EARTHQUAKE!

David Sloane is one of the Army’s top investigators. Convinced that two of his own have been framed by the tiny island government of Las Flores, he’s determined to do what it takes to prove their innocence. When a major earthquake hits the day he arrives all hell breaks loose.

LOST LOVE

In the midst of chaos, former army nurse Sarah Kyle arrives with Doctor Without Borders. Just as David comes face to face with the woman he’s never forgotten, he is tapped to lead a manhunt to capture the dangerous convicts that escaped during the earthquake. These men will stop at nothing to leave the island.

NAVY SEALS

When the hospital is overrun by the most brutal of convicts and an American doctor is held for ransom, the Navy SEAL unit Black Dawn is called in. Can David and Black Dawn rescue Dr. Carys Adams before it is too late? Through all the turmoil will David and Sarah realize that their time has finally come and they were meant to be together?

This is an extended version of the novella ‘Her Heart’s Protector’ from the box-set Cuffed and Claimed. It is a prequel to ‘Her Adoring SEAL’ book 3 of the Midnight Delta Series.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogo

David arrives on the Island of Los Flores intending to interrogate two soldiers who he believes have be set up. Unfortunately an earthquake quickly changes everything.

With the death of the Chief of Police, the Lieutenant Governor immediately takes advantage putting him in charge of the corrupt police department. He needs someone responsible to take control in order to expedite the clean-up and manhunt for some very vicious criminals.

I love my heroines strong and determined. Sarah certainly fills that description. Having left the Army and joined Doctors Without Borders, she can and does handle anything thrown at her.

A perfect example of this is when the group from DWB arrives, this is a favorite scene.

Holy God. He squinted. The hair. The way she was shielding her eyes from the sun. He couldn’t get a good look at her because the guy in front of her was tall. David waited until she stepped on the tarmac. He’d recognize the way she walked until the day he died.

Sarah Kyle.

Sarah Marie Kyle.

Captain Sarah Marie Kyle. Only she wasn’t in the Army anymore. She wasn’t a lot of things anymore. Cut it out, Sloane.

“David?” The group was arranged in front of him in a semi-circle, and Sarah walked toward him.

Move you idiot! Say something! Don’t stand there with your figurative dick in your hand, looking stupid!

“Hi, Sarah.” He gave her a faint smile, then turned to the others. “Hello, everyone. Welcome to Las Flores. Lieutenant Governor Bernardo Oliveras offers his sincere appreciation for your help. He’ll be meeting you at the hotel. In the meantime, he sent me. I’m Captain David Sloane, United States Army. I’m going to take you to the hotel where you will be staying. It is a five-star resort built last year on the beach, and it sustained little damage. It has its own sewer system and electrical generators. As a matter of fact, some injured were brought to the hotel because it was in better shape than the hospital.”

“I’m Doctor Carys Adams.” A petite woman with strawberry blonde hair stepped forward. “Me and most of the others have just come from Nigeria. We got a little bit of sleep on the plane, but I think it would be best if everyone could get about four hours of rest before heading to the hospital. I don’t want mistakes made while we’re providing care.”

“I got plenty of rest,” a man with a nasal voice said. His eyes were bloodshot, and if David had to guess, he had also been drinking on the plane. More than one set of eyes rolled.

“Arnie, everyone will go to the hotel and rest. Then we will all go to the hospital as a unit and go over the information and protocols at the same time. Have I made myself clear?” Dr. Adams seemed to grow inches, as her voice turned to ice.

“Carys, they need us,” he wheedled. “I don’t think people should needlessly suffer because some people need sleep.” Carys opened her mouth to reply, but before she could say anything, Sarah stepped forward.

“Doctor,” she said addressing the belligerent man. “I believe I saw you downing quite a few vodka tonics on the flight over. I think you, more than anyone, require extra rest,” Sarah said as she stepped into the doctor’s personal space. He flushed a deep red.

“Now that everything is settled, if you will all get on the bus, we can head over to the hotel,” David said.

They filed onto the bus, but Sarah held back so that she could get onto the bus last.

“What are you doing here?”

“It’s a long story, Sarah.”

“Are you staying at the same place we are?”

Did she finally want to see him?

“Yes. I’m staying at the same hotel that they’re putting all of you.”

“Can I see you?” Solemn gray eyes. They still had the power to take his breath away.

David nodded. She got on the bus, and he followed. He sat up front next to Carlos and watched as she sat on the seat next to Dr. Adams.
O’Leary, Caitlyn. Her Steadfast HERO (Black Dawn Book 1) (pp. 17-19). Passionately Kind Publishing. Kindle Edition.

As things get going with search and rescue and the manhunts tension rise. Especially with the doctor Sarah has already called out once for being drunk. She is escorting him back to quarters when the others in her group are taken hostage by some of the escaped convicts.

The Navy SEAL team Black Dawn is called in to liberate the hostages, and then gets permission to hang around and help with the round-up of criminals.

Fast paced and emotional, as this island works itself back to functional with the back story of Sarah and David coming to the forefront as their passion re-ignites.

Aspen “Blade” Carlisle is the last of his Delta Force team to find love…and he’s pretty bummed about that fact. Which might explain why he finds himself chatting up a telemarketer as if she’s a long-lost friend. But Wendy is surprisingly easy to talk to, so when they go from occasional calls during her work, to nightly conversations on their cells, it somehow feels right. So right, Blade eventually convinces the funny, sweet woman to meet him in person.

When their first face-to-face meeting gets high-jacked, Wendy Tucker is sure she and Aspen made a big mistake in taking their relationship to the next level. But the man is nothing if not persistent. Before long, Wendy’s allowing the handsome soldier to spend more time with her and Jack, the teen brother she’s raising, than anyone she’s ever dated. Though she knows there are limits to how close she can get to Aspen, no matter how much she likes him. Limits carefully constructed to protect Wendy and Jack from a past they’ve been running from for years.

But dating Blade means having an entire team of Deltas at her back. Which may come in handy not just with Wendy’s past…but also when her brother faces a current threat.

**Rescuing Wendy is the 8th book in the Delta Force Heroes Series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.

Our heroine Wendy has a different kind of problem than the other women in this series. Not to say it isn’t as formidable, just different. Working two jobs to support her and her brother, she gets to know Aspen aka Blade while cold calling as a telemarketer.

From the first time Blade speaks to her he knows she’s different somehow and they now speak often. He however is ready to take this relationship to the next level. He wants to meet in person, in public of course so she feels safe.

Wendy’s brother Jack is a trip, he’s smart, funny and has a protective streak. He paves the way for Blade after the major screw-up of a blind date with Wendy.

This is a favorite scene as Blade begins to win the right to a date.

“What are you doing here?” she asked, staring up at him as she bit her lip uncertainly.

“I screwed up on Friday,” Blade told her. “I’m here to rectify my mistake.”

She immediately began to shake her head. “No, you didn’t do anything wrong. I should’ve—”

“How about we talk about this over a late lunch?” Blade interrupted.

Her brows drew down and she looked confused. “But it’s like, two in the afternoon.”

Blade smiled. “It is. If you’re not hungry, we can do something else. It’s not too hot today. We could sit outside in that shaded courtyard I saw on the side of the building if you’d prefer.”

He saw the indecision in her eyes. And fear. Perhaps that he was here to berate her for leaving the bar on Friday. Wanting only to reassure her, Blade slowly reached out his hand and placed it on the side of her neck. His thumb brushed the skin near her ear as he leaned in and said quietly, “You’ve got nothing to worry about, Wen. I’m not upset with you about the other night.”

“You aren’t?”

He shook his head. “No, sweetheart. I’m pissed off at that bitch who pretended she was you, but I’m not mad at you.”

“I should’ve said something.”

At her words, the worry Blade hadn’t realized he was still carrying around slid off his shoulders like a silk shirt. “I understand why you didn’t… well, at least partly why. Will you sit with me and talk?”

Her long lashes lifted and she met his gaze. “Yeah. I’d like that.”

As is par for any relationship things don’t go completely smooth and there is plenty of drama over Wendy’s secret and some angst as well. Plenty of fun and laughter and maybe even a few tears.

More importantly though is the way bullying is handled in this book. Jackson’s girlfriend Jenny and her drama group are being targeted. Jenny in particular because Jackson and his friends stand up to the bullies.

Now you know darn good and well Blade and his team aren’t going to stand by and watch either.

We get to see all our favorite characters in this one, well except for Fish, although he does have a video call with Jack’s robotics club.

Annie is precocious as ever at the performance of ‘The Little Mermaid’ which has Jack’s girl Jenny as Ursula. The things that happen after that performance really amp up the plot.

Needless to say I loved this book. Susan takes on bullying with finesse and class. Plus Susan is a notable tease and at the end of Rescuing Casey she threw out a few bombshells that had many of us gasping. In this book one of the major ones comes to head and boils over. Of course this is just setting us up for Rescuing Mary, is it October yet?
