After a harrowing mission, Navy SEAL Aiden Willingham was approached to participate in a secret research project. Now he realizes the Spartan Project is a covert, multinational government testing program run by a private company called The Silverstone Collaborative. The company’s mission is to create super soldiers, men capable of recovering from horrendous illness and injuries, using a serum derived from indigenous plants in the Amazon rainforest. The program is brutal and when the men object, they go from test subjects to caged prisoners overnight.

The doctor leading the program is world-renowned for his cutting-edge cures, but Aiden sees only the madness in his eyes. The serum is producing results, but men are dying every day of testing. And, as more men die, the experiments turn more deadly. What the research team doesn’t realize is exactly what the serum is doing … creating a psychic connection between four of the men.

Aiden and his team have to break out of the camp before they’re compromised further. But getting out of the camp is the easy part. They know that actually living to bring the Silverstone Collaborative to justice is going to be the most difficult mission any of them have ever undertaken.

If you are a fan of the Lost and Found Series you will remember that we first met Aiden in Embattled Hearts, and he pops up in the other books as well. Now at long last we get his story, this is the beginning and we meet the others that were with him during this truly trying period of his life.

This is not a romance, this is a detailed accounting of the events leading up to Aiden appearing in Denver. We first meet the four men held close together. Aiden, Wolfe, Fontana and TJ Rector. Wolfe is the only non- American in this group, he is from Germany.

These men originally had volunteered for the program, but when men started dying things changed. They became prisoners.

The conditions are harsh, the treatment is brutal and had me sniffling and holding my breath.

We also meet the cold hearted Priscilla Mattingly, COO of the Silverstone Collaborative. She becomes the most dangerous of all their captors as she lets everyone know who is in charge.

This is a favorite scene as the guys escape this hell.

Like a whisper, Fontana came for him two hours later, with Wulfe and TJ Rector by his side. How the fuck did you get out of your cage? Aiden demanded.

Fontana grinned and moved to the door. Watch. Holding the iron lock in his hand, Fontana just looked at the thing for several seconds. Then, with a click, the lock fell open.

Aiden shook his head, amazed, and honestly a little fearful. Fontana was doing things he’d never even considered.

I managed to get the guards to fall asleep, Fontana told him. We’ve got a little bit of time to get out of here. The cafeteria should be empty right now. I suggest we gather what food and water and supplies we can before we head out.

Agreed.

We’re not leaving.

Aiden’s throat closed up as he stepped outside, unshackled and uncuffed for the first time in months. Yes, he was naked as a jaybird, but he was finally free. No one would be putting him back into handcuffs, he vowed. He would die first. Then what Wulfe said sank in, bringing him back to focus.

What are you thinking?

Wulfe looked at the medical building. Our proof is there.

The rest of them turned to look at the med center, knowing he was right. It housed all of the secrets. Shu had been meticulous about his notes, and they each had files several inches thick. The technicians had complained endlessly about the duplication. It could be a suicide mission going back in there, but they had no other option. Wulfe was right about that.

Rector and Fontana, go to the cafeteria and Shu’s hut. See what you can find. We’ll also probably need something to go through the fence, so look for some tools. Wulfe and I will see what we can find inside. Meet back here in thirty minutes.

The two men nodded and slipped away into the darkness. Aiden looked at Wulfe.

I really don’t want to go in there, he admitted.

I don’t also, but we must, American. This is the only time. She will get rid of everything. Every record, every note. And we will be liars.

Aiden knew he was right, but it didn’t make it any easier to do. He scanned the area, checking for soldiers or guards, but the camp was deathly silent.

He looked at the squat cinder block building, fighting nausea. Deliberately, he slowed his breathing, but it was hard. His heart was trying to thud out of his chest and his body demanded oxygen. Aiden couldn’t even remember how many dangerous missions he’d been on as a SEAL, but certainly into the triple digits. Too many to count. He’d been shot and stabbed, snake-bitten and had busted ankles and knees, and he’d take any one of those injuries again rather than voluntarily walk into that building.

Wulfe was thinking like a squad leader, though. They needed hard, physical proof of what had happened here. Otherwise everything they’d been through would be hearsay, unprovable.

Quietly, Aiden began gearing himself up, just like he did for hard assaults. Neither one of them was physically ready for hand to hand combat and they had no weapons other than their minds…but their fledgling abilities hadn’t been tried in stressful situations. There was a very real chance that the first time he tried to finesse anyone they’d laugh in his face, then shoot him in the head. He was convinced that the sniper in the med center had been a fluke. The man had already wanted to kill— Aiden had just removed the tiniest restriction in his mind.

Wulfe slammed his doubled fists into Aiden’s shoulders to psych him up and they turned toward the building.
Madden, J.M., Genesis: The Dogs of War Prequel (Kindle Locations 443-471). Kindle Edition.

I have to say I was much relieved when the guys got out. However there were many trials and tribulations for them as they trek through the jungle hoping to find a place big enough for phone reception.

Action-packed, emotional, scary and I couldn’t put it down!

I look forward to reading more of Aiden’s story in Chaos which just released. I am also going back to re-read the Lost and Found Series since I haven’t read it since I purchased it in 2015.

Covering Coco – Special Forces: Operation Alpha – Special Forces & Brotherhood Protector Series Book 7 by Heather Long

Life between the cross hairs

Retired Navy SEAL John Jacob “Jacko” Johnson earned a reputation for being cool under pressure, having more kills from behind the scope of a sniper rifle than anyone else active on the teams, and being a total smartass. Some things don’t change, and not even a traumatic brain injury sidelining him keeps him from kicking in when his friends need it—most recently a top-secret mission to retrieve a lost asset.

Bolt action is louder than words

Coco Adler’s military career ended abruptly on a dishonorable discharge. Or so reads her military file. Recruited for a top-secret program, she digs in deep. When her cover is nearly compromised and she can’t reach her handler, she goes dark but stays on mission. The last thing she expects is a lunatic in a Hawaiian shirt to take her down a moment before a sniper’s bullet would have.

Forced to work together, Jacko will do everything to cover Coco’s extraction—even if it kills him.

I really love Coco, she’s an operative and she’s determined and she’s in trouble but doesn’t realize how much. That is until Jacko shows up and saves her from a sniper’s bullet.

This is a favorite scene as they avoid the shooter and make their getaway.

She went still, playing dead. Trapped beneath him, she couldn’t see the path. In the distance sirens kicked up, and shouts came from the road.

“Get off,” she repeated the earlier order. “We have to get out of here.”

“Sixty seconds.”

Sixty? Was he insane? “There is wide angle CCTV coverage everywhere here, we have to go.”

No question, mister hit like a damn linebacker was a pro. Of course, whose side he was on was anyone’s guess. “Forty seconds for the camera ahead to swing away.”

And he just took a bullet for you. Ignoring the snap of her conscience, she bucked her hips to his. A mistake, because damn he was solid everywhere.

“Come with me if you want to live,” he grunted, and then he was on his feet and had her up with him. Laughing, he tugged off her hat and she snagged it from his hand, stuffing it into her bag and pulling a scarf around her hair before they’d even made it three steps back the way she’d come.

“What the hell is so funny?” What was wrong with this guy? And where had those shots come from?
“I’ve always wanted to say that.” He grabbed her hand and tugged her with him. “There’s a car a half click to the east. Stay with me.”

“Let go,” she snarled, pulling her hand from his.

“Stay with me.” The clipped tone had her bristling.

“I can walk just fine without someone holding my hand.”

“We’re about to re-enter a camera line of sight, so try not to geld me.”

“What the hell are you…?” She never finished the sentence, as he pulled her against him with a rock solid arm around the back of her neck and then his mouth was on hers. The thick body armor he wore pinched against her breasts. This close, she couldn’t miss it. It also explained the lack of blood.

The savage kiss both breath-taking and infuriating. He spread his hand against the back of her head, keeping her there even as he kept them moving. Eyes open, she didn’t miss the way his gaze angled toward their path until his tongue slid against hers.

It was one thing to use a public display of affection to distract, she got that. But his tongue invasion was too damn sensuous for business. Grazing the invading tongue with her teeth, she shifted the kiss enough to latch onto his lower lip. The bite drew a hint of blood and he arched his head back.

Instead of snarling, though, he just grinned. “Damn. That was hot.”

He was insane.

Arriving at a range rover, he clicked a button and unlocked it—then he opened the passenger side. “Get in Ms. Adler. We have a lot to talk about.” Even as he spoke, he glided his hand down her spine to her lower back.

“Touch my ass, and the bruise on your back will be the least of your problems.”

Undeterred, he kissed the tip of her nose. “Get in or I’ll throw you in, darling.”

Asshole.

She got in, but she also put her hand into the tote and gripped the gun. He slid into the driver’s seat and started the engine. They were pulling into traffic and away from the resort as the flashing lights of the police arrived.

This is only the beginning of a hot and cold relationship as they try to avoid assassins at almost every turn.

Guest appearances by Wolf and his team occur at some very tense moments. References to Shielding Shayna, which also came out this week, tie events together very nicely.

Non stop action, sizzling and sexy, this book has it all.

I can’t wait to see what Heather has in mind for these folks next.

Shielding Shayna – Brotherhood Protectors World – Special Forces & Brotherhood Protectors Series Book 6 – By Heather Long

Shielding Shayna
Brotherhood Protectors World
Special Forces & Brotherhood Protectors Series Book 6
By
Heather Long

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Honor comes in all sizes.

Shayna Morgan has been a little bit of everything in her life—a daughter, a niece, a sailor, an investigator, and homeless. Nerve damage has left her with only partial feeling on her right side, and pain threatened to cripple her. Family pulled her home from where she slept in her car outside of DC, but it was the men and women of the Brotherhood Protectors who inspired her and gave her a purpose. She may not be able to fire a gun with any accuracy, but her new project fulfills her in so many other ways—helping other female vets just like her. It’s all hard, honest work and good sweat until a shadowy threat takes aim at her ranch.

Purpose comes in all shapes.

Fergus “Oddjob” Roper went into the Air Force at 18, before making a lateral move to the Navy, and then left the SEALs when he was 33. After 15 years of service, two wars, multiple deployments and 3 degrees, he’s looking for his next mission. After a year in Texas working with a horse trainer specializing in equine support animals, he’s heading to Montana to visit with old friends. He came for the beer, and stayed for the women…one woman in particular. Oddjob doesn’t mind mucking stalls, or helping out on the project—but what he wants is to shield the woman who saved his life, even if she doesn’t know it.

Danger doesn’t always take a direct approach, but Oddjob plans to have Shayna’s back as she gets ready to tangle with a whole new kind of enemy.

* This book includes special appearances by Hank, Swede and Bear from the Brotherhood Protectors Series

Shayna has a dream, a facility to help female Veterans make their way back to whatever their version of normal will be. Thanks to a generous benefactor she has the property and backing to make it a reality. As she works on the renovations to the ranch property, incidents have her seeking aid from Hank Patterson and his Brotherhood Protectors.

Fergus ‘Oddjob’ Roper is the man set to the job of protecting her, and he embraces the task by also helping with her horses. As they take a walking tour of the property things take off with a literal bang!

Gotta love those explosions, they bring people together pretty darn quick.
However, the puzzle only gets more complicated as clues to the identity of the culprit fail to show up.

This is a favorite scene as they wait for Hank’s crew to clear the house, just in case.

“Is it bad enough I should get a medic to look at you?” He’d told Hank to bring one, but she hadn’t been interested earlier.

“No, it’s not that bad—I’m just that weak.” She sat forward and accepted the water glass, then took the pills two at a time and washed them down with a drink.

“Pain is just weakness leaving the body—which makes you the least weak person I know.” Her pallor on the other hand served as a stark reminder that she wasn’t in good shape.

“Fair point,” she said, cracking another wan smile. “I do okay most days—but as evidenced by the cabin, I’m not up for full on field work.”

“Well, we’ll let it slide. Mission ops didn’t include possible explosions in the briefing.” He parked himself on the sofa next to her rather than hover. “Hungry?”

“No,” she said, draining the glass of water and he took it before she had to lean forward to set it on the table. “I should eat, but I am not remotely hungry.”

“MRE? Ramen? Peanut butter and jelly sandwich?” Those were the first three things that came to mind and they were all in his pantry.

“MRE?” Suddenly those dark eyes were focused on him.

“Don’t judge. I actually like the damn things. So I pick up a few when I get a chance. They also serve in a pinch when I need to eat and don’t feel like fast food or cooking.”

“Cause fast food and cooking are the only two options.” The humor brought a touch of color back to her cheeks.

“Possibly.” He studied the scars he could see. “Are you judging me?”

“Yes,” she said with a nod. “I absolutely am. MREs. Blegh.”

“Well, I’ll have to live with the insult…except I did offer to fix something for you personally.”

Teasing her was fun, and Oddjob liked the way life seemed to return to her expression. Maybe he should insist on the doctor anyway. Playing it her way was respectful, but the force of the detonation had hit them and he had taken her down in an effort to absorb most of it himself.

Had he hurt her more than if he hadn’t?

“True—and I’m sure it would be a gourmet PB&J.”

The bark of laughter escaped him and he grinned. “Damn straight, Marine.”

Her smile vanished, and she relaxed back against the sofa—or at least she mimicked relaxing. The way she held her right hand suggested it was still hurting, but she’d already begun to massage the palm with her left hand, using her good hand to loosen the fingers on the bad. What the fuck had happened to her? He had pieces, but not the whole story.
Long, Heather. Shielding Shayna: Brotherhood Protectors World (Special Forces & Brotherhood Protectors Series Book 6) (Kindle Locations 393-414). Twisted Page Press, LLC. Kindle Edition.

I did a lot of chuckling over Oddjob liking MREs. Almost as much as Shayna.

Oddjob has another reason for being her protection, but he didn’t plan on falling for her. His humor and straightforward attitude help Shayna with her own recovery.

I loved the slow build up of the relationship and the suspense surrounding the mysterious incidents.

Sexy, witty, and a twist I didn’t see coming.

Definitely a must read!

ARC Review of Seal by Fate – Ghost Hawk Ops Book 1 By Rhonda Lee Carver

Seal By Fate
Ghost Hawk Ops Book 1
A Lawman of Wyoming Crossover
By
Rhonda Lee Carver

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

The last thing he expected to find on the snowy mountain was an angel in a wedding dress…

One lost woman in a wedding gown and a snowy road change everything for ex-Navy SEAL and Ghost Hawk, Gray Carlisle. Life for him was all about catching bad guys, but on an assignment on the blustery mountain he found more than a terrorist, and she was far more dangerous.

Runaway bride…headlights…hitting her head. Those were the things Stormy West remembered when she woke up, naked with a bandaged head, in the small cabin on Whispering Mountain. And she wasn’t alone. Is her new roommate a hero or enemy? Logic and body at war, she can’t fight the feelings he erupts in her.

Sparks are flying between Gray and Stormy, but an enemy is closing in on the hideaway cabin, and a surprising connection will test everything she believes…

Rhonda Lee Carver, has entered the realm of former military with a bang!

Stormy ran away from her wedding, finally listening to all the warnings she’s been receiving, not only from her sister but also in the form anonymous letters. She is given a key to a cabin by her wedding planner, who assures her she will be safe there for a while. Little did she know she would end up stuck in a blizzard.

Former Navy SEAL, Gray Carlisle is now a member of an elite law enforcement group, Ghost Hawks. These men operate with a little more leeway and investigate where others have reached a limit.

When a lead comes in on Phantom, a terrorist that has been extremely elusive,  Gray jumps on it. Perhaps a bit impulsively as he decides not to wait  for more of his team to arrive.  He starts up the mountain as a blizzard reaches full force. Instead of reaching his destination, he almost hits a car sticking out in the road and nearly runs over a woman in a wedding gown.

Going to the kitchen, he poured himself coffee and spread out a map he’d found in the drawer. He had Rock Ridge circled in red, his target location. From his calculations, he was about ten miles from where he figured Phantom was hiding. Rubbing his brow, Gray might as well be a hundred miles because without snow gear and a vehicle, he wouldn’t make it two miles without feeling the effects of the weather. Not to mention, he couldn’t leave the mystery woman alone—at least not until she woke up. What he could hope for was that if the roads were closed, Phantom would stay put. Gray had heard on the radio that all roads had been shut down due to weather conditions. No cars could pass.

Gray dropped his fist on the table, sloshing coffee onto the map. “Shit!” He glanced across the room at the couch. She was still sound asleep.

He cursed himself for not having any gear with him. Every single survival apparatus was back at the office. Hell, in his favor, he hadn’t expected to be searching for a criminal in a blizzard. Still, he was usually better prepared than he was now. When the sun came up, he could access the situation, but without a vehicle how far would he get?

Hearing a soft moan from Sleeping Beauty, Gray hurried into the next room and found her thrashing around. He knelt beside her and gently held her arms down so she couldn’t hurt herself. “Hey,sweetheart. You’re okay. Can you hear me?”

Her eyes opened into slits. “Wh-where am I?” she asked in a croaked voice.

“You’re at the cabin. What’s your name?” He removed his hands from her slender wrists.

“Stormy. West,” she muttered. “Wh-who are you?”

“Nice to meet you Stormy West. I’m Grayson Carlisle. Or Gray. That’s what everyone calls me.” Some relief spread over him. He’d been starting to get worried that she needed medical attention, but her waking up was a sign that she was getting better. He needed to ask her some questions and get a good idea how she was feeling…and hopefully some answers on what the hell she was doing out here. Her eyes came open wide and she had amazing, ice blue eyes.

“Do I know you?”

“No. We’ve never met. I came upon you while you were walking in the snow. Do you remember?”

She blinked as if she was attempting to piece the memories together. “I-I remember walking, it was cold, then headlights…I jumped to miss a vehicle.”

“Yeah, you remember.” He’d wait to fill her in on the fact that he’d swerved to miss her and hit the mountainside. “Are you warm enough?”

“Yes.”

“Are you hurting?”

“A little.” She lifted her hand and touched her forehead, squinting. “Ouch.”

“You have a small cut that I treated with ointment and bandaged. You didn’t need stitches.”
“Are you a doctor?”

“No but feel safe enough knowing I’ve patched up a lot worse. Anything else hurting?”

“I’m sore all over.”

“That’s about to be expected.”

“I’m so thirsty. Can I have something to drink?”

He smiled. “Let me take a close look at you for injuries now that you’re awake and then I’ll grab you a bottle of water. Okay?”

“I thought you said you aren’t a doctor?” Her thin brows came together.

“Don’t worry. I know what I’m doing. I’m certified in first aid.” He took her hands into his, seeing how small they were mixed with the finger marks on her skin lit his protective side. “Can you squeeze my fingers?” She did. “Good job.” He turned her hand over and swallowed. There he found another bruise, probably from a thumb, and about the size of one too. Acid rose in his throat and it took him a good three seconds to drag his head back on track. It wasn’t any of his business.

“I think I’m okay.” Her soft voice brought him fully back to the situation. “Right?”

“You have some bruising and you’ll be sore for a while, but nothing’s broken. I couldn’t find any pain meds here. How about I grab you that water now?” He stood, not waiting for her answer and stomped to the refrigerator, all the while gritting his teeth. Sure, it was none of his business how she got the marks on her wrist, but he sure as hell hoped the jilted groom didn’t show up pounding on the door because it might become Gray’s business right quick.

Having no clue about the situation, he felt relief that she had backed out. Instinct warned him that she’d been in trouble and things would have been far worse if she’d gone through with the marriage. Uncapping the lid to the bottle, he handed it over and she sipped. “Not too much. It’s possible you have a concussion.”
Rhonda Lee Carver. SEAL by Fate (Kindle Locations 520-557). Kindle Edition.

All of Gray’s protective instincts come into play and even though he truly wasn’t prepared for his assignment he manages the extreme weather and Stormy.

Even dealing with her feelings or rather non feelings for her ex, Stormy pulls it together. I absolutely loved the stray dog she names Lola.

The slow build up of both the intrigue and the romance kept me turning the pages. A great start to a new series.

ARC Review of Reviving Trish – Project Deep Book 2 By Becca Jameson

Reviving Trish
Project Deep Book 2
By
Becca Jameson

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

After ten years, life is giving them a second chance…

Tushar will do anything to rekindle his marriage.

Keeping his wife safe is his number one priority.

Hiding in the Mountains of Montana is their best chance at survival.

Trish isn’t on the same page.

She wants more time with the son she hasn’t seen for ten years.

She wants her life back.

What if it turns out no place is safe?

The sparks that brought them together two decades ago are still burning.

Neither is willing to take the risk.

But second chances should never be squandered.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogo

Awakened only three weeks ago, Trish finds herself in a cabin in the middle of nowhere Montana. Away from her son and all things familiar. Well everything except her husband Tushar, and she’s not sure how she feels about him.

Tushar had brought this change on them by taking full responsibility for the scientists that had been cryogenically frozen ten years prior. That declaration brought out even more protestors and threats to not only his life but his wife’s as well.

“I have a call scheduled with Temple later this morning. Maybe she’ll have something good to tell us.”

“Maybe.” “At some point we’re going to have to talk to each other, Trish.” He tried not to sound desperate.

“We are talking.”

Stifling another groan, he continued, “You know what I mean. About us. About the future. About where we’re going and what we want to do next.” About saving our marriage.

She finally turned around. “You’re right. But I need more time. I’m still a little angry. Don’t push me.”

“Why exactly are you so angry?” He shouldn’t have asked. He really shouldn’t have asked.

She rolled her eyes. “You pressured me into coming here, Tushar. I wasn’t ready. I told you I wasn’t ready. Now here we are in the middle of nowhere doing what? Waiting? There’s no guarantee the threat against our lives will ever go away. Are we going to stay here forever?”

He took a deep breath. “It wasn’t my idea.” Not initially.

She threw her hands in the air. “Oh, come on. You practically jumped up and down when Temple suggested this little vacation. You wouldn’t listen to me. I. Was. Not. Ready.”

He swallowed. Maybe he should have given her more time first. He’d been so anxious to get out of that bunker that he hadn’t listened to her. She was right. “I couldn’t breathe, Trish. I felt like I was choking on the air in that confined space.”

“We lived in that bunker for years. It never bothered you before.”

He nodded, rubbing the back of his neck with one hand. “I know. You’re right. Something changed. I changed. So did you. When I woke up, all I wanted to do was make sure you also survived the reanimation. Once you opened your eyes and I could inhale again, I realized the place was suffocating me.”

“Why?”

He shrugged. “Probably because I feel out of sorts. After years of being one of the top medical professionals in my field, I don’t even know what’s happening in that lab. I feel…impotent. I needed to get out of there. I don’t have the faintest idea what I want to do next, but I had to escape.”

She stared at him for several seconds. “I can see that. I might have felt the same way in another few weeks, but we’ll never know because you didn’t give me a chance. I needed more time to reconnect with my son.” She dropped her arms, turned, and walked out of the room. Seconds later she shut the door to their bedroom a little harder than necessary. And seconds after that he heard the shower running.

Shit.
Becca Jameson. Reviving Trish (Kindle Locations 246-268). Becca Jameson Publishing. Kindle Edition.

Trish has so much to come to terms with, not the least of which is her feelings toward Tushar. She loved him once, does she still?

There is so much emotion. Doubt, desire, angst, and fear all compound into a spellbinding tale.

It seems I find a lot of new to me authors by starting one of their series anywhere but the beginning. Such is the case with Tara Thomas. This is the third book in her Sons of Broad series and I now have to go back and read the first two since I want to know the stories of Kipling’s brothers and their relationships as well.

Edge of your seat suspense as this tale unfolds. The case seems to have connections to not only to the Benedict family, but also to the death of Alyssa’s sister.

Twists and turns even as the attraction between Kipling and Alyssa gets steamier. Topped off by an OMG I didn’t see that coming!

Don’t miss this page turning read!

ARC Review of Blackburn – Special Forces: Operation Alpha by Brynne Asher

Blackburn
Special Forces: Operation Alpha
By
Brynne Asher

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

She’s my employee.

I’m her boss’s boss. Hell, I own the company.

Pursuing Lillian Burkette was a line I shouldn’t cross.

Until a work trip from hell changed everything.

I didn’t just step over the line. I annihilated the damn thing.

When it comes to her, there’s nothing I wouldn’t do. I’d even kill for her.

When they say the corporate world is a jungle … they have no idea.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002 smashwords_logo

Brynne Archer is a new to me author. I really enjoyed her foray into Susan Stokers, Special Forces: Operation Alpha.Like a lot of companies nowadays, Blackburn is expanding globally. What was to be a trip with her boss to Nicaragua, ends up being one with the company CEO, Gabe Blackman when her boss becomes ill.

Lillian has been berated for not including Gabe Blackburn in some of these meetings by not translating what was being said. Her job is to market and sell, not translate, so I really loved the way she lets him have it. Boss or not, it doesn’t change her role.

When they are suddenly surrounded by militants, Gabe’s entire demeanor changes. He becomes a fighting machine and then his whole attitude toward her changes.

Trekking through the jungle in wedge heeled sandals wasn’t ideal but Lillian persevered.

This is a favorite scene when they found shelter for the night.

“Oh.” Well, then. I guess that just means he really doesn’t like me. The stress from the day is beginning to bear down and the need to sit and take my shoes off is overwhelming. I toss the package of M& M’s at him and he moves with quick precision to catch it. “Here. I hear a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. Oh, but you already know that, don’t you?”

I sit on the dingy, wooden floor and, when I lean back against the wall, I bite back a moan from getting off my feet. When I reach down to unbuckle my sandals from around my ankles and pull them off, I wince.

“Holy shit,” he mutters and moves closer to look at my feet. I knew I was wearing blisters but I didn’t think they’d be this bad. These wedges were comfortable in the store, but hiking through the rainforest in them? No way.

Gabe reaches down and tips my ankle to get a closer look. “You should have told me to slow down. I was surprised you kept up as well as you did in these shoes.”

“It’s fine.” I brush him off and yank at the hem of my dress to pull it down my thighs since he’s squatting at my feet.

“I’ll be right back.” Gabe stands and starts for the door.

“Wait. Where are you going?”

“I’ll be gone two minutes.” He looks back.

“Don’t you dare come out unless I scream bloody murder.”

My face falls. “That’s not funny.”

“It’s also not funny to tease me about watching Mary Poppins when I was forced to by my sisters who weren’t above using cruel and unusual punishment before I was big enough to kick their asses.”

He turns to leave again and I can’t help yelling after him, “If you could sing the Supercalifragilistic song and click your heels together, I could use a fruity rum drink with a happy umbrella stuck in the top.”

I’m not sure, but over the hum of the bugs and other creepy sounds in the rainforest, I swear I hear him laugh.

I didn’t think Gabriel Blackburn knew how to laugh.

I didn’t think it was even possible for him to smile.

Even so, I hope he hurries the heck up.
Brynne Asher. Blackburn (Kindle Locations 407-427). Brynne Asher.

I found myself sighing as he tended her injured feet, giggling as she teased him about Mary Poppins and holding my breath as they find themselves captured.

I love that the person Gabe calls for assistance is Tex. I swear that man is in every one of the ‘world’ books. Which makes sense since he can find anyone, anywhere.

I loved the way this relationship develops from just a fantasy in their minds to a very real steamy one. Top it off with the way Gabe handles Lillian’s family and their co-workers and it’s a winner.

I will definitely be purchasing more of Brynne’s books.

ARC Review Shelter for Blythe – Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Book 11 by Susan Stoker

Shelter For Blythe
Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Book 11
By
Susan Stoker

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Blythe Coopman never imagined she’d be homeless, but a series of events has landed her on San Antonio’s streets…hungry, tired, and scared. She clings to her most precious possession, a phone accidentally swiped from a local firefighter, who, instead of canceling the number, starts texting her. Soon, the man’s calls and texts are the highlight of her days, but she declines his frequent offers of help. Blythe refuses to be his burden—until a vicious attack takes the decision out of her hands.

When the woman he’s already begun to care for ends up in the ER, Sawyer “Squirrel” McClay is livid—and ashamed. He should have insisted she accept his help long ago. Now, he’s not taking no for an answer. While his friends rally round Blythe, Squirrel’s bond with her grows stronger by the day, until he realizes he’ll do anything to keep her safe, healthy, and happy…even as his own lifelong insecurities work against him.

But despite leaving the streets behind, Blythe and Sawyer discover old dangers still linger, threatening to end the couple’s new bliss before it’s barely begun.

** Shelter for Blythe is the 11th book in the Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002 smashwords_logo

We got our first glimpse of Blythe in Shelter for Sophie. Elusive and mysterious, she hides away from any kind of help. Her one valuable possession, a phone. She found it in the sweatshirt Squirrel ‘Sawyer’ gave her to wear the night of the fire. The one that demolished the building she was staying in with Louise and Todd.  However, before they could get her to go with that couple,  she vanished and Squirrel did the most unpredictable thing in her mind, he didn’t cancel the phone, he started texting her.

It’s because of that phone that Squirrel was finally able to put his sort of plan in place. He was able to convince her to stay at Sophie’s house, like Todd and Louise had, after she was injured helping others.

This is a favorite scene as they arrive at the house.

He eased his door open and grabbed the bag of meds he’d stopped to pick up on the way home and her backpack. Shrugging it onto his back, he walked around his Jeep and opened her door. Blythe’s head was bent at an awkward angle and she seemed to be fast asleep. He unbuckled her seat belt and scooped her up into his arms.

She woke up enough to mumble, “My bag?”

“I’ve got it, baby. Relax.”

“Mmmkay.”

Squirrel shut the door with a foot and headed for the house. Sophie had told him earlier that she’d left the front door unlocked when she’d left for the hospital, making their entrance easy. He strode toward the back hallway once they were inside.

He went straight into the master bedroom and to the attached bath. He settled Blythe on the counter and held her upright as he woke her.

“Blythe? Wake up, baby. We’re home.” It took her a moment, but finally her eyes opened all the way and she stared at him.

“We are?”

“Yeah.”

“I didn’t mean to fall asleep.”

“It’s okay. I bet you haven’t had a good night’s sleep in a long time.”

“You’d win that bet,” she told him.

“I would’ve let you sleep, but I’m guessing you want to shower.”

“Oh, God, yes.”

“I need to get a plastic bag for your hand and also cover those other wounds before you get in though.”

“I can do it,” she told him.

“I know. But today you don’t have to. Let me help you.” Squirrel saw her hesitation. “I already saw them when the doctor stitched you up, remember? Besides, I’m a paramedic. I’ve seen more naked torsos than the most successful porn star.”

She smiled at that.

Pressing his advantage and not giving her a chance to come up with an excuse for him not to help, Squirrel ordered, “Stay there. I’ll be right back.” He removed her backpack and placed it on the floor next to the counter she was sitting on, then hurried out of the room.

It took him longer than he would’ve liked to find the plastic wrap and tape, but when he got back to the bathroom, Blythe was still sitting right where he’d left her. She’d kicked off her shoes, and seeing her sitting there, vulnerable and uneasy in her socks, hit him hard.

He helped her stand, making sure she was steady before he let go. Then, trying to ignore anything but the task at hand, he got to work taping the plastic wrap over her stitches. When he was done, he made the mistake of looking at Blythe’s face.

Her eyes were closed, and she was clinging to the counter behind her as if her life depended on it.

He didn’t see pain in her expression but had to ask. “Did I hurt you?”

“No,” she answered immediately.

Squirrel took hold of her uninjured hand clutching the edge of the counter. “Are you sure? It’s okay to be in pain. I’m not going to think less of you.”

“It’s been so long since anyone’s touched me,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “I can’t remember how long. Your fingers on me…” Her eyes opened and she pinned him with her gaze. “They make me feel human for the first time in a really long time.”

“Oh, baby…” And with that, Squirrel folded her carefully into his embrace.

What she didn’t know was that she made him feel like a man, a true man, for the first time in a really long time too.
Susan Stoker. Shelter for Blythe: Badge of Honor, Book 11 (Kindle Locations 815-846). Stoker Aces Production, LLC.

Oh the sniffles! This was only the first of many times I found myself tearing up.

This is a very emotional story, and Blythe has gone through so much. Sawyer has some issues as well, and they both learn from each other.

I love the women in these books, they have endured and come back even stronger. Banding together to be with Blythe.

Oh and the donkey!!! So dang cute and had me giggling.

So much happens in this book, a heartrending, inspiring, hold your breath, page turner.

A New Series from Becca Jameson: Reviving Emily – Project Deep Book 1

Reviving Emily
Project Deep Book 1
By
Becca Jameson

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

It’s been ten years…

For Ryan it’s been the longest ten years of his life.

For Emily it’s been days.

He spent those ten years developing a cure for the virus she contracted.

She spent those ten years in a cryostat, her life suspended.

She’s not the only one to be reanimated, but she is the first.

The media is surrounding the compound.

The religious zealots are picketing.

But people have lives to live, and somehow they have to move forward.

Ryan still has work to do. People to revive. A disease to cure.

Emily has a blank slate. She can go anywhere. Do anything.

She can’t stay in the bunker. It casts a pall over everyone.

Now is not the time for distractions.

Now is not the time to fall in love.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogo

I have to say when Becca Jameson goes in a new direction, she goes big!

This series centers on a group of researchers who had been infected by a sample and cryogenically frozen until a cure could be found.

The doctor who finds this cure and puts together a team to ‘thaw’ the subjects is the son of two of the researchers, Ryan Arnand.

Now the first person to go through this process is not one of his parents. Emily Zorich, a hemotologist, was close to a cure when she was taken down by the disease. It was decided that she would be an asset to their team, and she could also evaluate the work Ryan has done that led to the cure. Even though his work has cured many, there was concern that the disease might have mutated over the years and might not be effective on those scientists originally infected.

This is a favorite scene two weeks after Emily is revived.

He took the water bottle from her shaky hand. “You sure you’re not overdoing it? You need to take it slow.”

She lifted a brow. “You say that like I have all the time in the world.”

He scrunched up his face. “Good point. I realize the clock is ticking, but you’re not in any danger so far. The total blood replacement and the drugs we administered to minimize the effects are buying you time. You’re not even showing symptoms yet.”

“Yet. The operative word.”

He leaned back against the couch next to her, having left enough space between them that they weren’t touching. His palms were on his thighs, gripping. When he tipped his head back to stare at the ceiling, she felt the tension coming from his body.

“You must be anxious to bring your parents back,” she whispered, reaching out to set her hand on top of his. What possessed her to touch him like this? She glanced at their connected hands, unwilling to release him. It felt good. Human.

He didn’t pull away. He turned his head slightly in her direction and smiled. He looked tired. As though he’d spent the better part of the last decade working his ass off. And she knew he had. “I’ve waited ten years. Another few weeks or months won’t kill me. We need to be sure we’re doing everything right before we revive the next person.”

She nodded, feeling awkward about touching him so intimately. As she started to remove her hand, however, he flipped his over and threaded their fingers together, holding on to her. When he lifted her hand to his cheek and closed his eyes, she stopped breathing.

His touch was welcome. She was living in another dimension. She hardly understood the world around her or even who she was or what her place would be in this new universe. It was nice to have this connection. Ryan was kind. Caring. Concerned.

She stared at him, learning his features, the way his nose tipped up slightly at the end, the way he licked his full lips often as if he either had a serious need for lip balm or was always about to say something he held back.

He sighed as he pressed her knuckles against his face, blinking his eyes open to meet her gaze. “You ground me. You give me hope.”
Jameson, Becca. Reviving Emily (Project DEEP Book 1) (Kindle Locations 448-467). Becca Jameson Publishing. Kindle Edition.

In spite of all the secrecy involved as it has always been a government facility, things leak. There had been other attempts at revival of people that had be cryogenically frozen that were unsuccessful, due to the different circumstances of the patients.

Life changes rapidly for Emily, for everyone it’s been ten years but for her it feels like just yesterday. Ryan and her have a spark that can’t be denied and even as the powers that be want to send her into hiding for her own protection, the relationship blooms hot and heavy.

Plenty of suspense as the protesters and press come out in full force and some crazies too.

I can’t wait for the next ‘revival’!

My Review of Erick – SEALs of Steel Book 2 by Dale Mayer

Erick
SEALs Of Steel Book 2
By
Author

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Two years earlier, Erick Fuller, a former SEAL, was severely injured when his squad’s truck drove over an antitank landmine. He lost his lower leg and two fingers. He’s filled with steel plates and titanium pins…along with the driving need for answers and justice. Six other team-mates were also badly hurt, the seventh dead, in what their team leader Badger Horley realized later had to be a trap set to take them out. After joining the team in England and finding a link to the antitank landmine used in the explosion, Erick heads to Kabul–to the site where the original incident took place–for more intel. What he discovers there blows him away…

Honey Lewis, an innovative leader in the field of dentistry, is invited to a cutting-edge stem cell research conference. The man who issued the last-minute invitation is someone she met at a similar workshop years earlier. While she knows she doesn’t have the experience, she nevertheless can’t resist attending to learn the industry’s latest. Once she arrives in Kabul, she runs into another man–one she never expected or hoped to see again. She met Erick a year ago in New Mexico when she smashed into his beloved, vintage ’69 Mustang. Unbelievably, he’s still upset about the accident. If only his overexcitement didn’t bring out corresponding emotions in her…

With too many things going on at once–in her life and inside her own heart–the tug-of-war all but blindsides her with the realization that the man who befriended her might not be the man she thought he was.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

With Cade, Book 3 released last week, I figured I better get typing and let you guys know what I thought about Erick.

From meeting him in Badger, I felt Erick was one of the more level headed of the crew so far. At least he seemed to have some common sense and self preservation going for him.

With Badger finally agreeing to surgery again, Erick and Cade head to the site of the explosion that nearly killed them all. Joined by another member of their surviving crew Talon, they get quite the surprise at the hotel.

Honey Lewis and Erick met by accident, literally, when she crashed into his ’69 Mustang. Now by some weird coincidence they are both at the same hotel in Kabul. She’s here for an elite conference on new and innovative dental procedures. What he’s up to she can only guess.

As the guys go to investigate where their injuries occurred, other intrigue begins at the hotel. Bringing yet another member from their team, Lazlo, to keep an eye things there.

This is a favorite scene as Honey texts Erick to find out if he will be returning to the Hotel that night.

She’d come over here excited and full of anticipation. Her first day was spectacular. Meeting Erick wasn’t the highlight of the trip. But right now, there was comfort in knowing he was here. But not if a gunman was after Erick. The man had been through enough already. And he was a fellow countryman. As she drove herself crazy with this constant circling of thoughts, she headed back to the elevator. As soon as it opened, she stepped in, going down to the lobby. She was meeting the rest of the group for dinner. Having missed out on lunch, she made sure she’d gotten in on the plans for the evening meal. With any luck it would be shop talk all through the evening.

As she walked across the lobby, she couldn’t help but turn to look, thinking about the way she’d seen the man disappear earlier. But there was no sign of him, no sign of the gunman, and neither was there any sign of Erick. She frowned and wondered if he was even coming back tonight. It was early enough she shouldn’t be considering that, but something was distant-sounding about his voice. But then the phone lines here were shoddy. She quickly sent him a text, asking if he was coming back to the hotel.

Why?

She shook her head. “Just answer the damn question, would you?” she muttered to herself.

I want to know if I’m supposed to worry about you or not.

Again, as if he was sitting on his phone waiting to hear from her, the response was fast.

Aw, you care.

No, I just thought I’d tell the gunman which room was yours.

Ouch.

In spite of herself she laughed.

Just kidding.

I know. Won’t likely make it home tonight. Expecting to be back tomorrow night.

Business?

Interested?

Hell no.

She chuckled. Their exchange was hard, fast and furious and, for whatever reason, a solid meeting of minds.
