The Montgomery Ink series by NYT Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan continues when the final Denver Montgomery sibling refuses to fall for his brother’s former flame—the company’s new plumber.

Wes Montgomery watched his entire family fall in love, and now finds himself ready to settle down. Except the one person he seems to find chemistry with is not only his twin’s ex, she also works for Montgomery Inc. But when the two find themselves in one compromising situation after another, Wes realizes he’s having second thoughts about the dynamic woman who’s burst her way into his life. Sure she sets off his temper, but she also makes him hot in every other way possible.

Jillian Reid never loved her best friend like everyone thought she should, so she pushed him away so he could have his future. Now, despite fighting it, she finds herself attracted to the one man she shouldn’t. When her father’s health takes a turn for the worse, and a danger no one saw coming show its face, she’s forced to turn to Wes for help. The two of them have fought off their attraction long enough, and each cave to the desire. But this enemies-to-lovers tale might have an ending no one ever dreamed of.

Jillian tore off her shirt right beside her truck. Thankfully, she’d thought to put on her normal tank underneath like usual, even though she hadn’t planned to work that day. She needed a shower, but the fact that she’d washed her face and hands to the point of reddening her skin and was now pulling on a new shirt would at least take care of most of the damage.

Almost all of the crew was gone for the day since it had taken her much longer to do her job than probably anyone had planned. But, hell, it had been a much larger piece of crap bathroom than even Storm figured. Now, she was ready to go home, drink a beer— after her shower—and watch a Harry Potter marathon.

And didn’t that just sound like the most interesting life ever.

She sighed and honestly didn’t care all too much what others thought of that. She’d had a long day she hadn’t planned for, and she just wanted to relax her way.

After tossing her dirty shirt into the garbage bag in her truck since she knew there was no saving that particular piece of clothing, she turned and let out a silent screech. Her foot slammed into the curb, and her ankle twisted slightly. Hands out and braced for an ugly fall, everything seemed to go in slow motion as she tried not to hurt herself any worse than necessary.

Strong arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her up so her back pressed firmly into a very hard chest. Her heart raced since she still felt like she was falling even though she wasn’t, and she let out a slow breath.

“You okay?”

Of course. Of course, it was him. It couldn’t be anyone else who witnessed her clumsiness and near accident. It had to be Wes fucking Montgomery.

Where was a crevice in the earth to swallow her up and take her away from this situation when she needed one?

“Jillian?”

“I’m fine,” she grumbled. “You can take your hands off me now.”

But he didn’t.

Instead, he turned her in his hold and looked her right in the eyes. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

She swallowed hard. Why hadn’t she noticed the brightness of his eyes before? Or the way his pupils dilated when he focused on something…namely her at the moment?

“I’m fine,” she repeated. And she was. Her ankle throbbed slightly, but it wasn’t even a sprain since she’d had enough of those to tell. She’d just tweaked it a bit in her clod-hopping way of walking.

He didn’t let go.

“Seriously, Wes. You need to stop trying to baby me, or whatever the hell you think you’re doing all the time. I’m not an idiot. I can handle myself. Why do you—?”

She didn’t even know what she was going to ask at that moment because her mind went blank at the first touch of Wes’s lips to hers. Her eyes closed of their own volition, and she leaned into him. That seemed to push him harder, and he deepened the kiss, his lips soft yet firm against hers as his tongue traced the seam of her mouth. She opened for him, tangling her tongue with his as she moaned.

The sound seemed to break them both out of whatever the hell they were doing, and they pulled apart as if struck, both left panting, their chests moving quickly up and down.

“No. Not going to happen.” She held out her hands, trying to catch her breath. “Nope. No way.”

Wes looked at her as if he hadn’t seen her before, his eyes a little wide. “It was…it was an accident.”

She didn’t even flinch at that, too numb from everything else hitting her all at once. “Fine.”

She turned on her heel, grateful she hadn’t actually hurt her ankle, and jumped into her truck before turning her engine and pulling away.

“Nope,” she muttered to herself again. “Not going to happen. I’m not going to do another Montgomery and fuck myself over. And I’m sure as hell not going to do a boss Montgomery. Nope. Nope. No. No. No.”

And if she kept repeating that to herself, she just might get the damn taste of Wes Montgomery out of her mouth.

Watch the Trailer!

It’s quite amusing to watch these two spar and dance around each other.

Jillian is a strong woman who has fought her way up in a male driven profession. Now working as the Montgomery’s lead plumber, she finds herself in constant battle mode with Wes. With respect of course, she loves this job.

Wes has no idea when his feelings toward his brother’s ex changed but suddenly he’s fantasizing about her and when he kisses her on impulse all bets are off.

I think my favorite quote in this book is “Fighting’s foreplay for some” which is so very appropriate in this relationship.

Of course nothing can go totally smooth and a mystery surfaces as the Montgomery’s start a large warehouse conversion. Lots of things start going wrong, Wes is attacked outside the site and oh so many other things.

I laughed, cried and fanned myself more than once from the heat of these two. You won’t be able to put this one down.

This book starts off in the action. The men of Guardian Security and the Black Swan Ladies had teamed up for a mission to save children. During the mission we get an idea of where this is heading for Griffin and Grace.

This is a favorite scene as they get ready to head home.

The intensity of Griffin’s kiss finally penetrated Grace’s surprise. She hadn’t been kissed like that since…ever. It was a little bit dangerous kissing a man in front of her team. In front of his team. She was a Navy officer and this was most definitely a public display of affection. Unquestionably, against regulations.

There was something about breaking the rules that excited Grace, just a little. She was a good girl. She followed all the rules to the letter.

But this was Griffin…finally kissing her. And, man oh man, was it a kiss.

He ran his wide hand up her spine, each nerve igniting and sending newly awakened energy throughout her entire body.

She wanted more.

Completely forgetting where she was, she dropped the bags she’d been carrying and smoothed her hands up his solid chest and over expansive shoulders. Threading her fingers into hair far too long to be a military cut, she pulled his head down, at the same time going on her tiptoes. When she opened for him, he thrust his tongue into her mouth and she wrapped hers around it in a dance that was new to her.

Kevin hadn’t liked French kissing. Sometimes he’d pressed his lips to hers so hard they nearly bruised, but all their life together, kisses had been puckered lips only. Even the men she’d dated since her husband’s death, including Griffin, she had only kissed closed mouth.

He pulled her body even closer to his, one hand dropping and cupping her bottom. Then he rocked his hips into her belly, matching each thrust of his tongue.

Oh, this was so bad…yet oh so good. They really shouldn’t be doing this, least of all in front of their teams. But she had waited so long…all her life, to be kissed like this. His warm hand, that nearly covered her entire butt, squeezed.

The moan she heard was hers. That realization shocked her back to her surroundings.

She jerked her eyes open and pulled back from him, frantically looking around.

The men trailed Katlin and Alex, walking away. Ignoring them. Tori, Nita, and Lei Lu stood ten feet away holding up fingers judging the drama in front of them.

Grace wanted to bury her face into Griffin’s chest. Instead she suggested, “We really shouldn’t be doing this in front of everybody.”

Griffin just smiled. “Why the fuck not?”

When he bent to kiss her again, she moved her head away. “Public displays of affection are considered unbecoming of an officer, punishable by the Uniform Code of Military Justice.”

“I don’t give a damn. I’m no longer in the military so—”

“But I am.” Grace jumped back. She looked over to where Alex had his hand on the small of Katlin’s back, guiding her toward the rear of the plane. That small gesture might’ve been misconstrued as PDA but most would consider it gentlemanly. On the other hand, open mouthed kisses and rocking hips were far from approved social behaviors.

With one finger, Griffin turned her chin to face him. “Do you really think they care?” He leaned down and gently brushed his lips over hers. “Grace, we’re all adults. I’ve just put every man here on notice that your mine.”

“They’re not the only ones who now know how you feel.” Completely focused on him, she brought the palm of her hand to his cheek and raised herself up to meet his lips.

“Get a room.” Nita’s nearby voice cracked the spell. A wicked smile crossed her friend’s face. In a sultry voice, she suggested, “Or share.”

When Nita’s eyes raked over Griffin, Grace suddenly became very jealous. Protective even. She didn’t like the way her friend looked at him.

“He’s big enough to handle both of us.” Nita’s little pink tongue licked her top lip. She had once told their team about having a threesome. To Grace, the idea of sharing herself with two men, at the same time, had been beyond conceivability. The mere thought of sharing Griffin with another woman was infuriating, especially since she had never had sex with the man who now stood so close she could feel waves of his body heat.

“Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve doubled down.” Griffin’s grin moved into a grimace when her eyes met his. Obviously her face was covered in shock. He pulled Grace back into a one armed hug. “But this little lady is more than enough woman for me.” He then bent down and placed a firm, reassuring kiss on her lips.

The tingle that passed through her made her forget his previous words so she deepened the kiss.

“Good save,” Nita said in a low voice as she walked by.

“Lady Eagle.” Tori’s voice echoed from inside the hangar. “Tick. Tock. You going to help me pre-check this plane or do I have to do it all by myself?”
KaLyn Cooper. Unexpected Love (Kindle Locations 324-363). Kindle Edition.

Grace and Griffin definitely heat up on that first real date. Later Griffin gets to know what it feels like to be the one left at home as the ladies head out on yet another mission.

With all their successes and anonymity because they are women you just know that can’t last. So now along with the men they have a price on their heads.

In the midst of all this Grace and Griffin are going strong at least until her father has a heart attack.

I really felt sorry for Griffin and don’t blame him for feeling unworthy. But seriously who is more worthy of love than him and Grace. What the heck is a good man anyway? Certainly not her parents’ definition.

Plenty of action, and everything from sensuous to sizzling.

Needless to say I loved this book, and I can’t wait for more of Grace and Griffin as well as the rest of these ladies and their men.

In the Spirit of Halloween – Magic and Mayhem: Every Witch Way But Floosey’s By Heather Long

Every Which Way But Floosey’s
A Magic and Mayhem Kindle World Novella
Madison The Witch Hunter Book 1
By
USA Today Bestselling Author

Heather Long

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Meet Madison–badass lady who is always bringing in the realm hoppers. Her targets have horrible habits and steal things.

Meet Grady–he’s a hard case who brings in targets of his own. He’s got his own team and a penchant for flings. When the fairy tale collides with a legend…will they still be standing after the dust clears?

KindleLogo

Madison and her Spell-brador Karma are hunters. The magical dog showed up right after she was born, not what a mother actually wants for her daughter to be. Destined to hunt down witches and return them to serve what ever their sentence might be.

Grady has his own team, and Karma likes him. He has sorceress and shifter blood making him much larger and sexier than other witch-born.

Now Madison’s handler has broken her rules and sent Grady after the same bounty she’s after. Floosey is set to testify against some powerful witches and she’s jumped and the pay-off to return her is huge!

This isn’t the first time these two have crossed paths and the sparring starts almost immediately. Not only with words but also spells and snowball fights.

This is a favorite scene which brought memories of my mother and grandmother and a laugh out loud moment.

Surprise filtered into Grady’s expression. “The target’s a showgirl, not some black magic Mafioso.”

“Maybe. She managed to dodge the handlers at the casino, escaped a charmed resort, and realm jumped. Sound like your typical showgirl to you?” Why was I talking this out with him?

“Not the ones I’ve fantasized about, but usually that just involved jeweled bodies and lots of feathers.” Even as he spoke, he licked his lips.

“Does being a pig come to you naturally or do you have to practice?”

“Practice,” Grady said with an easy smile, then drew a cross over his heart and circled it. “If Grandma was here, she’d summon a bar of soap, and I’d eat it like candy ‘cause she was staring at me.”

I was starting to like this woman. “Then pretend I’m your grandmother and get to it.”

“No chance. Fantasizing about my grandmother is sick. I get kink, but that’s a little twisted, even for me.” His grin broadened, and I groaned. I’d walked right into it. “C’mon, Madison,” he drew out my name, sans the ridiculous nicknames. “Let’s go see what’s got the wisp all a twitter.”
Long, Heather. Magic and Mayhem: Every Witch Way But Floosey’s (Kindle Worlds Novella) (Madison the Witch Hunter Book 1) (Kindle Locations 279-289). Kindle Worlds. Kindle Edition.

What had the wisps all a twitter ends up trapping the two of them and even more fun ensues. Especially when the faithful Karma disappears.

There are lots of references to things of my childhood all in the snarky playful way Madison has with Grady.

Be prepared to laugh out loud, giggle and just enjoy this story.

I can’t wait to see what happens in the next of this Magic and Mayhem series by Heather.

review-fall-cornucopia

Looking for a book to keep you awake until you finish? This one will do just that.

It’s one thing for a father to warn you away from his daughter, but when that father is also an Admiral and threatens your career, you back away. No matter how painful you do what you believe is best. Unjustly charged with treason, believed dead, but actually working with the CIA to find the actual mole, Jace finds a trail that leads to Brooke’s father Admiral Frazee.

Brooke was incredibly hurt when Jace walked away from her, but she is strong and she will go on without him. Of course she doesn’t know her father had set all this in motion. Now her father is dead and she and her son Jack are in danger. When Jace shows up she isn’t sure what to believe but knows she has to trust him.

This is a favorite scene as they leave for the safe house Jace has ready.

Jase shut Brooke’s door before he reached around and buckled her in, chastising himself on the short jog around to his side. He could see the nondescript van at the stop sign a block away. With a quick twist of his wrist, he had the engine on and was buckling up as he put the vehicle in gear. “I’m assuming he doesn’t require anything special to eat or drink, right?” A primal urge to punch the bastard who’d knocked Brooke up had him spitting the words out.

“His name is Jack, and no, he doesn’t require anything special that you or I don’t eat or drink as long as it’s healthy. I don’t feed him junk or sugary things. I like to make sure he has a well-balanced diet and tries everything on his plate. He has a fondness for the strangest things, so I let him indulge every once in a while.” She crossed her arms over her chest and looked out the window.

Her defensive posture and mama bear attitude made him wish for things he couldn’t have. “What do you mean, strange?”

She shrugged, but didn’t answer right away. Jase was beginning to think she wasn’t going to until he heard her sigh. “He likes peanut butter sandwiches with banana slices on them. It’s the strangest thing, ‘cause one day I’d made him a sandwich and I had a banana. The little monkey held his hand out and said nana. I gave it to him, thinking he wanted my banana. He opened his sandwich and squished them together. He made a huge mess, but watching him eat it was like watching someone win the lottery. You’d have thought he’d died and gone to heaven. I have it on video.”

Jase stilled at her words. His favorite snack was a peanut butter sandwich with banana slices. Of course, lots of people liked it he was sure. “Kids got great tastes,” he said.

“I’ll admit I tried it, and it’s not bad. So, where are we going? Obviously anywhere I know of won’t be safe.” Her hazel eyes met his. He could see uncertainty written on her face.

“I’ve a safe house about an hour from here. We’ll go there tonight, and I’ll explain what I can. There are things I need to ask you, and I’m sure you have questions. Some things I can answer, others I can’t.” He put his hand on her leg, halting the nervous bounce that had started.

Brooke bit her lip. “There’s definitely some things we need to discuss. I can’t promise not to get upset, though.”

“Fair enough.” Jase kept looking in the rearview mirror as he got on the highway. When he was confident they didn’t have a tail, he took the next exit and hopped back onto the highway, heading the opposite direction.

“Um, you realize you just did a circle?” She twisted in her seat to check on Jack and looked out the windows.

“I wanted to make sure we weren’t being followed before I went toward our destination.” He glanced back at Jack, watching the boy as his eyelids started drooping. “He’ll be out in no time.”

“Yeah, when he was a baby he always fell asleep in the car, which sometimes was a blessing and a curse. If he slept while I drove, he was rearing to go when I was ready to drop after a trip.” Affection laced her words.

“Where’s his father?” Jase’s fingers gripped the steering wheel, hating the unknown man.

“Are you kidding me?” Brooke asked, her words came out in a low hiss.

His jaw ached from grinding it together. “Why would I joke about something like that?” The woman was confusing the hell out of him.

Brooke turned in her seat, lifting her leg up so it was bent and crossed the other over her foot. Her arms folded in front of her as she glared daggers at him. “Jase Tyler, I can’t believe you can sit beside me and question who his father is. I mean look at your mini me back there. Anyone would think it was obvious you were his biological dad,” she whispered.

Everything seemed to freeze in that moment. The dark eyes that reminded him of the ones that stared back at him every time he looked in the mirror. The too serious face of a little boy who he’d seen in pictures, only they’d been his pictures, not the little boy in the backseat. Hell, she was right. Looking at Jack was like looking at a miniature version of himself. Only, they’d used protection. “How?” he choked out.

She looked back checking on Jack, making sure he was sleeping before she continued. “I don’t know. I…was on the pill, but I guess the low dose didn’t work with your super SEAL sperm or something. I’d never missed a pill, not once. I told the doctor that, too. She said it happens. That’s why it’s not a hundred percent effective. I wasn’t on the pill for birth control, but for my,” she looked away before continuing, “anyway, I wasn’t on it for that specific purpose, therefore I was on a lower dose. Clearly, it was too low for…that.”
Boon, Elle. Delta Redemption, SEAL Team Phantom (Kindle Locations 892-937). Elle Boon. Kindle Edition.

Twists, turns, reuniting with his former team and rebuilding a relationship that now includes Jace’s son makes this a book you won’t be able to put down. There is plenty of action and the heat between these two sizzles even before they hit the sheets.

When Dylan comes to them for help, he knows he’s got to handle her case personally. As his attraction to her grows, so does the conspiracy that landed him in Brooklyn

Warning: This story contains snort out loud humor, intensely hot sex, a blistering antihero, and a damsel with a steel backbone. The author takes no responsibility for missed work or grouchiness from lack of sleep.

review-fall-cornucopia

Dylan McDonagh signs herself into Morningstar Sanatorium after she survives a car accident trying to escape her brother and demonic fiancé Aiden. Bound by a promise made by her father who died after selling his soul for wealth and power, she has been forced to use her psychic gift to gain access to ancient artifacts for Aiden.

Vanek is one of the demons ejected from Hell on a trumped up charge of treason against Lucifer. He finds himself at that same sanatorium committed after finding himself in the human world with no memory and a shitload of anger.

Dylan is drawn to him, she hears his tormented nightmares and using her gift to see through the walls, she sees a demon in his room at night.

They both know they need to get out of there but for different reasons. Vanek needs to know who he is and Dylan needs to hideaway somewhere where she can’t be found.

The opportunity arises when Nash one of the other exiles locates Vanek. He has no intention of taking a human with them and I have to say I don’t like him very much. Vanek on the other hand has been winning my heart over.

This is a favorite scene and one where I find I really, really don’t like Nash.

Nash was through the door before Vanek could come up with an argument to off the sadistic monster right now. The second they cleared the door, Nash muttered something and the lights went out, plunging the corridor into pitch blackness. Whispering, he ordered, “Stay close. We’re heading straight to the main exit. We’ve got about two minutes before the lights kick back on. Let’s go!”

He shadowed Nash as he jogged down the hallway and made the next right turn. Using the wall as a guide, he stumbled along until his eyes adjusted to the darkness. Because his heart was hammering in his ears, he had to strain to listen for nurses or security guards. They had about sixty more seconds before the lights came back on and they’d be busted. Up ahead, the glowing exit sign identified the stairwell they needed. Just as he slowed down to hit the door, someone crashed into him from behind. They went flying through the door into the railing before tumbling down the five steps to the next landing.

Dylan landed on his chest with one elbow in his throat and the other in his stomach. Spots flashed behind his eyes when his head connected with the floor.

“Are you seriously leaving me here?” Her chest heaved against his as she panted for air. Lack of oxygen didn’t stop her mouth, though, and anger sent her voice up an entire octave. “We had a deal!”

Rearranging his shoulders so her elbow was out of his windpipe, he gasped hoarsely, “What the hell is the matter with you? Are you nuts?”

Nash reappeared to yank her up by one arm and shove her into the nearest wall. “Get back to your room, little girl. We don’t have time for you.”

Instead of listening to the big scary dude, she set her jaw and threatened, “If you don’t take me with you, I’ll scream bloody murder. Everyone will come running and you’ll never get out.”

He and Nash exchanged a glance before Nash said exactly what Vanek was thinking. “Or, I could just break your neck and throw you down the stairs.”

She gasped but didn’t budge from her position. He could almost hear the wheels turning in her head as she assessed the two of them. That stubborn chin lifted another inch. She wasn’t giving up. She had courage. He’d have to give her that.

“Vanek’s life is my only concern. You’ll just slow us down.” Nash wasn’t impressed with her stubbornness or courage.

She tried again. “Just get me off the property. That’s all I’m asking for. I don’t need you to babysit me. I just need to get over the fence.” Her plea hung in the air for a split second before she whispered, “Please, Vanek.”

He looked at Nash. It was his call. He was running the show.

Nash shook his head in disgust and snapped coldly, “We don’t have time for this. We’re leaving. You can follow if you can keep up.” With that, he swung his body over the railing and leapt down to the landing below.

Launching himself over the same railing, he followed Nash’s route until he landed in a crouch inside the main lobby. The glowing letters of the exit sign promised escape just as the fluorescent hallway lights hummed back to life. The sudden illumination was blinding. Losing his balance, he staggered, nearly falling to his knees, but somehow managed to throw himself through the open door and into the freezing night air. From the corner of his eye, he saw Dylan several yards behind as she came running down the stairs.

A black SUV idled in the patient drop-off zone. Gunning the engine, the driver shouted, “Move your asses!”

Freedom was only twenty yards away.

As they sprinted across the sidewalk, Dylan cried out behind him. He kept running.

“Vanek!” Dylan’s anguished scream stopped him just as he reached the SUV.

Nash was already inside and turned to yell, “Get in!”

“Wait!”

He regretted turning around the second he did it. All hell was breaking loose. The hospital was lit up like a hockey rink. People were yelling; their voices growing louder the closer they came. A couple of security guards raced into the lobby. They’d be through the door in a few more seconds. Dylan limped towards them, trying to run, but not able to put much weight on her left foot. She peered over her shoulder at the guards closing in and then measured the distance to the SUV. The desperate hope shining in her eyes turned bleak and she slowly stumbled to a halt. The defeat on her face twisted his gut. Damn it. He owed her. He couldn’t leave her like this.

Nash pounded on the door, yelling, “Get in the fucking truck!”

Torn between Nash and Dylan, he was moving before he could change his mind. Racing to her side, he scooped her into his arms and sprinted towards the SUV as it screeched backwards to meet them. After tossing her inside, he dove across the seat just as the front doors of the hospital flew open. Tires squealed as the driver floored the gas pedal. In another fifteen seconds they were through the gates and flying down the access road.

Dylan let out a whoop of hysterical laughter as the countryside blurred by. “We made it! Oh my god—I thought you were going to ditch me!” As abruptly as it started, her laughter trailed off, her smile fading as she shrugged apologetically, “I guess you’re not the asshole I thought you were.”

“To be honest, I thought about it. You’re lucky you don’t weigh more.”

“Nice.” Groaning impatiently, she reached down to massage her ankle. “I take that back. You’re more of an ass than I thought, but I’m glad you didn’t leave me.”

“Here, let me take a look at that.” He pulled her leg across his lap to examine her foot. “Can you move your ankle?” He rotated it in a small circle until she reached out and grabbed his hand to stop him.

“Ow, hey, let’s not move it, okay? It’s throbbing, but it doesn’t feel broken. It’s probably just a sprain. I slipped on one of the damn steps trying to keep up with you.” Her warm fingers lingered as she leaned into his side to whisper in his ear, “Thank you.”

Before he could respond, the driver whipped the SUV into a gas station parking lot and slammed the brakes. Nash turned around and ordered, “Out.”

She sputtered, bristling with indignation until she found her voice. “Are you crazy? I can barely walk! You can’t leave me in the middle of nowhere! What am I supposed to do? They’ll find me!”

He spoke up. “Yeah, man, we don’t need to take her with us, but we can’t just dump her here. Can’t we drop her in town?”

Nash shot him a hard look that said shut the hell up. “We need to cut her loose. Now.

“But—”

“Not your call, V.” Nash tossed Dylan a cellphone and said, “It’s a burner. Use it to phone a friend. Now, get out. We have shit to do.”

Moving stiffly, she tugged her shoe back on. Her eyes glittered with tears (or maybe just fury), but she sounded strong, proud. “Fine. Thanks for the ride.” She opened the door, but hesitated with one foot in and one foot out. Turning back to Vanek, she said, “Good luck with your devil, asshole.”

Dylan was furious. More than furious. She was so mad she wanted to shoot lasers out of her eyes. How could he just dump her in the middle of nowhere like this? Weren’t they friends? He didn’t owe her anything, but only a total dick would leave her stranded. She had no money. She had no identification—no credit cards—nothing. Oh, snap, that’s right—she had a cellphone. Yay. Friggin’ jerk! She hoped his devil burned him alive.

As the taillights vanished around the bend, she sighed. “Well, hell.”
Olerich, Laurie. Vanek (Demons After Dark Book One) (p. 51). Kindle Edition.

There’s a lot of build up in this book and as much as I found myself laughing out loud, I also found myself gasping in horror and tears falling from my eyes.

Vanek and Dylan together spark excitement and the air just sizzles. I do wonder about the rest of that crew though.

A hold your breath page turner with plenty of action and heat.

review-fall-cornucopia

When I read a book I can ‘see’ the scenes in my head, and this is a very intense book. I feel this needs a warning since I believe some scenes could cause triggers in individuals with PTSD.

Mary Reynolds is ‘The Edge’. Working for the Hive she is the person in the background that gets teams out of fubar situations in one piece. Now she is facing the one mission she cannot fail, keeping ‘HERA’ her security system safe, and keeping herself alive.

Kidnapped and tortured, her mantra:
Someone will come. Stay strong. Stay quiet. Stay focused. Survive.
Carnes, Cara. Jagged Edge (The Arsenal Book 1) (Kindle Locations 79-80). Rebel Edit. Kindle Edition.

But ‘The Edge’ has to relax and be just Mary in order to continue being the asset she is.

Dylan Mason and his brothers formed the Arsenal, former military they undertake missions others won’t or can’t working in all the gray areas. They’ve also established The Warrior’s Path Project to help soldiers returning home to transition back to civilian life.

An anonymous call led them to Edge and her rescue. Now they needed to figure out who was responsible and make them pay.

Mary wasn’t alone in the creation of HERA, Vi, her bestfriend and her main partner worked beside her at the Hive. Rhea and Bree contributed power and weaponry respectively, although their identities have been kept under wraps to keep them safe. Then there is Addy, the sister of the deceased head of the Hive. This is one of my favorite scenes when this crew of women come to get their Edge.

Dylan entered a war zone, Logan and Mark hot on his heels.  Gage Sanderson and all five of his brothers knelt, hands behind their heads with the business end of weapons trained at their heads. It was who held the guns that made him laugh.

“Jesus, y’all were taken down by GI Jane wannabes.”

A blonde with red, wire-rimmed glasses glanced up from a laptop. She looked over at the redhead, the only trained one among the four females, and motioned her head toward him, eyes wide and expressive.

“Bree, point your gun at the new Rambos. Pull the trigger if they twitch,” the redhead ordered.

Bree was a busty blonde dressed in head-to-toe black with huge lines of face paint beneath expressive blue eyes, which gleamed with excitement. “Seriously? I can shoot?”

Dylan would be worried, but she was holding a tranquilizer gun of some sort. Drones flitted about in the air. One shot past his head and darted down the hall. He glared at Mark. “Go shoot it down.”

“Stay where you are, or I shoot,” the redhead threatened. “I’m coming off a seriously messed up op with no rack time. Try me.”

Yep, she was definitely the only threat in the room. Dylan studied his brothers, noted their drooping eyes and barely upright stances.

“They’re drugged,” Logan growled. “What’d you use?”

The blonde looked up. Eyes wider than saucers stared at them a moment. “Logan? What are you doing here? Don’t tell me you’re a part of this.”

“Is this the hot doc who Mary helped rescue, the one you said was trying to get in her pants?” The brunette at the end looked back and forth between Logan and the blonde. “Wow, he’s hot.”

“Rhea, not now,” gritted the redhead.

“Oh, Addy, you’re never any fun. Seriously. Vi has this under control.”

“Quillery didn’t just go ten rounds with six black ops soldiers before that shit in the drones kicked in.” Addy motioned at Dylan with her gun. “Come closer, hands behind your back. This’ll be over quick as long as you all cooperate.”

“Huh.” Vi tapped at the keyboard with one hand. “That’s odd.”

“What? Are there more men in the back?” Addy asked as she looked over at the busty blonde. “Bree, refill the drones with the knockout juice.”

“On it.” Bree looked pointedly at Dylan. “But I can still shoot fast, so don’t get any ideas.”

Quillery set the laptop on the reception desk and charged toward his brothers. Dylan tensed, ready to strike, but she bonked Cord aside the head before anyone could react.

Dallas snickered. Nolan outright laughed.

“What the hell was that for?” Cord demanded with an expression he’d used many times with their little sister when she got violent—which was fairly often since she had six overprotective big brothers.

“Where the hell did you get your hacker training? From a Cracker Jack box?” Quillery’s voice rose, shrill and shaky with anger. “You could’ve gotten everyone killed!”

“What the hell?” Cord repeated.

“What was the message you buried in my feed?” Quillery’s voice softened, a velvety seduction more like the tone she used with operatives.

“We have Edge. Come to Texas.”

Dylan cursed. Marshall growled. Nolan and Dallas laughed. Jesse knocked Cord aside the head.

“What the hell?” he sputtered. “You got the message.”

“Oh, yeah. We got the message, idiot,” Addy retorted. “Take a look around. Do you have any idea what Quillery could’ve put in those drones? They’ve only been used on two ops before this, and both times everyone was carried out in body bags.”

“Never, ever, ever, ever send vague codes through a hack. Brevity is good, but only if it has detail.” Quillery got closer, leaning in until her face was up against Cord’s. “Edge secured in Texas. That was what you should’ve said.”

“Shorter, assures safety and our position in the situation,” Dylan explained.

“Shit,” Cord groaned.

“Does this mean I can’t shoot the thingie?” Bree asked.

“Well, this is all shades of awkward,” Addy commented as she secured her weapon and looked around. “Addy Rugers. Nice to meet you all.”

“Mark, check the perimeter. Verify everyone’s okay,” Dylan ordered.

“We didn’t hurt anyone,” Quillery commented. “Much.”

Addy unshouldered a backpack and handed it to Mark. “Their weapons and coms.”

The man grunted and headed out, a glower on his face. No one liked to be bested, especially by a kick ass female soldier. Addy Rugers was as trained as her legendary older brother had been, or so he’d heard.
Carnes, Cara. Jagged Edge (The Arsenal Book 1) (Kindle Locations 396-434). Rebel Edit. Kindle Edition.

From here an alliance of sorts is formed and the developing relationship between Dylan and Mary becomes progressively hotter.

Lots of twists and turns and OMG moments. Have some tissues and plenty to drink handy. Start this book early so you get some sleep, you won’t be able to stop reading.

I also found myself speculating on who the next book will be about. I have my theories and I’m sure you’ll develop yours.

review-fall-cornucopia

First I want to thank J.M. for adding me to her review team and for the ARC of this book. Now I have to confess this is the first book I am reading of this series so once again I’ve started at the end and not the beginning. The other books, Forget Me Not (the prequel novella) and Untying His Knot are now purchased and on my kindle waiting for me.

Right away I fell into this story, Cheyenne, single mother of three, juggling her time to get things done. Helping to get a bridal shower planned plus everything else had her grabbing the opportunity to spend just a little time to herself at a new coffee shop in town.

Sheriff Sheridan Lane is every woman’s heartthrob, a single father he hasn’t shown any interest in any of them. He’s been waiting for one woman to be ready to move on, Cheyenne.

This is a favorite scene as Cheyenne makes the first move in putting the past behind her.

“I’m sorry I jumped out there,” she told him abruptly. “I was pretty relaxed in here and you startled me when you grabbed my arm. It wasn’t you, specifically, though. I just wanted you to know that.”

He narrowed his eyes in thought, before nodding. “I know that. I’m a little shocked you’re even talking to me right now, though. What’s changed?”

Cheyenne turned to look out the window. Cars drove by slowly, trucks mostly, hauling feed or wire. There were a few people walking, but not very many. What had changed?

“I don’t know,” she admitted. “I’m just tired of not being normal, I guess. It’s been six years. No, seven now. And I’ve realized how ridiculous I was being, jumping every time I see you.”

Sheridan cocked his head at her. “You can’t always make things better just because you want to.”

There was a glint of humor in his eyes that really appealed to her. She’d missed seeing him and talking to him. They’d been friendly years ago. “I know. We might just have to be happy with this little step for a while.”

They both smiled and took a drink of their coffees.

“Well, when you’re ready for more let me know.”
J.M. Madden. Naughty By Nature (Kindle Locations 155-166).

There’s much to overcome for Cheyenne, and Sheridan is doing his best to keep her and her children safe. His daughter Olivia is a typical teen but even she can be won over.

I really loved Grace’s shenanigans and Savannah’s tattling. Carolyn seemed a bit more mature and helpful but does have an eye-roll or two for her sister.

An emotional story that gives the background of both their stories which had me sniffling, a lot of tension when Cheyenne’s ex shows up, and plenty of sizzle between Sheridan and Cheyenne.

I liked seeing the couples from the Lost and Found series which is another favorite of mine, you should check those books out too.

Review and A Giveaway! Rescuing Bryn Delta Force Heroes Book by Susan Stoker

Rescuing Bryn
Delta Force Heroes Book 6
By
Susan Stoker

blurb-fall-cornucopia

When you’re a Delta Force soldier, you see a lot. Often too much. But nothing can ever prepare you to see your entire team die before your eyes…

The loss of his Delta brothers—and his arm—has Dane “Fish” Munroe still struggling months later. He’s moved to Idaho, where an isolated lifestyle is making things worse, not better. Not that there’s anyone left to care.

Actually, Bryn Hartwell cares. In fact, she tries to surreptitiously make life just a little easier for the mysterious man who comes into the grocery where she works late at night, only to get a tongue lashing for her trouble. Still, he’s obviously hurting; someone has to worry about him, spurring Bryn to nurse Dane when he hits a particularly low point.

Intrigued by the quirky, kind, socially awkward woman, Dane allows himself to get close to someone for the first time in ages. A potentially epic mistake—because when her interest in the prepper lifestyle puts Bryn in the hands of a homegrown terrorist, losing her could put Dane’s mental recovery permanently out of reach.

But once a Delta, always a Delta. And there’s a team in Texas who are ready to have Dane’s back at a moment’s notice.

**Rescuing Bryn is the 6th book in the Delta Force Heroes Series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.

review-fall-cornucopia

I have to say I love this series and the life issues Susan brings up, some common, some not as much.

I love Fish aka Dane, he has gone through so much and I’m so glad he has Truck and the rest of Ghost’s team to turn to. When he thinks Bryn is stalking him I wasn’t surprised but I felt bad for her since she really was just trying to help.

Bryn notices a lot, she is a genius and was diagnosed as having some Asperger’s tendencies, most folks consider her weird or a freak but it really hurts her when Fish calls her the same. It almost made me cry when she sacrifices her job so Fish wouldn’t have to change where he shops.

Even though he hurt her feelings she can’t stop thinking about Dane and wanting to help him. She was like this with most everyone though. She just wants to make life a bit easier if she can.

While I loved the supermarket scene this scene featuring Dane’s reaction as he wakes up after getting drunk and rescued by Bryn is my favorite because he begins to realize he’s been an ass.

Dane groaned as he turned over and the morning light shone into his eyes as if a laser beam was aiming directly at his pupils.

“Fuck,” he swore as he quickly rolled onto his back and threw his arm over his face. Feeling nauseous, he took a few deep breaths, trying to control the urge to throw up. When he thought he had enough control that he wouldn’t vomit all over his sheets, he slowly turned his head to see what time it was…and blinked.

Sitting next to the clock on the little table next to the bed was a glass of water, two large tablets and two small. There was also a note. Dane reached out slowly, careful not to jostle his head, and picked it up.

I’m sure you feel like crap. Put the Alka-Seltzer tablets in the glass and when they dissolve, drink it all down. It has sodium bicarbonate, which will help settle your stomach and make you not wanna throw up, and the aspirin will help your headache.

That was it. It wasn’t signed and had no other information about what the hell he’d done last night. Dane closed his eyes and tried to recall anything past arriving at the hole-in-the-wall bar he’d impulsively pulled into. He’d been driving home from Post Falls, where he’d gone to grocery shop.

The trip had been a disaster. It was too early, there were too many people, even in the small town northwest of Coeur d’Alene, and he’d been too damn keyed up to finish his shopping. After going up and down three aisles, he’d simply put down his basket and left. The storm that had roared in as he was driving home didn’t help the feeling that he’d never be normal again. Even though storms didn’t usually send him over the edge, every clap of thunder made him flinch and the lightning reminded him of the flashes of light from the bomb that had killed his friends and ruined his life. Feeling defeated and sorry for himself, he’d stopped at the bar on the outskirts of Rathdrum and proceeded to get shit-faced drunk.

Other than a bartender who needed an attitude adjustment and a waitress who had seemed to want to go home with him—until she’d seen his stump—the rest of the night was a complete blank.

Feeling sick, now for more reasons than the leftover alcohol in his bloodstream, Dane forced himself to scoot upright in the bed. He picked up the tablets and dropped them into the glass of water, watching dispassionately as they bubbled and fizzed. When it looked like they were done releasing their hangover cure into the water, he drank it in three large gulps.

Dane couldn’t remember how he’d gotten home. When he first woke up he figured the bartender had probably called a cab or something for him. But after seeing the note and medicine on the table next to him, the cabbie idea was out. He sighed, trying to figure out how he was going to get his truck. It was most likely sitting in the parking lot of the bar. At least he hoped it was.

Thinking it was a good sign that he didn’t hear anyone in his small house, Dane eased his legs over the side of the mattress and carefully stood.

He wavered, but remained upright. Deciding that he’d need coffee if he was going to be remotely human in the next four hours, he stumbled out of his bedroom and down the hall into the living room.

Focusing on the kitchen, he grabbed hold of the granite countertop as soon as he neared it. Thank God for open floorplans. He reached for the coffeepot—and paused with his hand in the air as if frozen.

Another note.

I figured you’d need coffee first thing. Just hit start. It’s ready to go.

After pushing the green “on” button, Dane picked up the second note to examine it. The writing was slanted slightly to the right without any embellishments. It looked like a man’s handwriting, but somehow Dane knew it wasn’t. How, he couldn’t have said, but there was a memory at the edge of his mind that told him whoever had brought him home, and left him notes, had been a woman.

He looked down at himself. He was wearing a pair of boxers and that was it. Feeling self-conscious for the first time, Dane scratched the stump on his left arm absently. He never went to bed without wearing a shirt anymore. Ever. But here he stood. Practically naked.

Without waiting for the coffee to finish, Dane went back to his room and looked around. The clothes he’d been wearing yesterday were nowhere to be seen. Fuck. Having a feeling what he’d find, he went to his dirty clothes hamper. Empty. Except for another fucking note.

Your hamper was full, and your clothes stunk from all the cigarette smoke, so I started a load. Don’t forget to move the clothes to the dryer, otherwise they’ll mold and smell nasty.

Whoever it was had done his laundry.

Definitely a woman.

Had she seen his arm?

His scars?

God, he felt pathetic. First, he’d gotten drunk enough to black out for the first time since he’d gotten back from the mission that had changed his life forever, and now he was bemoaning the fact a chick had seen his scars.

Damn. Had he fucked her? Shit. Had he hurt her? Kicked her out? Not used a condom? He’d always been careful. Always. In fact, he hadn’t been with anyone since he’d been hurt, hadn’t had the slightest urge to get naked with anyone. Had being drunk made him lose his inhibitions enough to get laid? He hoped not. He’d never been a man-whore, and his stomach turned at the thought.

Dane turned toward the bed and ran his eyes over it. There it was—a head-shaped indentation in the pillow on the far side of the bed.

The one he never slept on. He felt even sicker than a moment before. Damn, damn, damn.

He opened the drawer next to his side of the bed and looked inside. The box of condoms he’d bought on a whim over two months ago after Truck’s urging to get back in the saddle was sitting right where he’d left it. Unopened. The sight of it relieved him a bit, although it was possible he’d been drunk enough to not even think about gloving up. Shit.

As if in a trance, he walked over to the side of the bed where someone had obviously lain the night before, and picked up the pillow. He brought it to his face and inhaled.

The smell of coconut assailed his nostrils, and Dane felt his dick twitch in his boxers. He lifted his head and looked down at himself in disbelief. With a hangover from hell, his head feeling as if someone was pounding on it from the inside, his stomach rebelling against him with every breath, it was almost unbelievable that the scent of a woman on his pillow could still give him a woody. He brought it up to his face once again and breathed in the smell that reminded him of the beach…of suntan lotion and woman.

Smalls.

The name popped into his brain as if the smell of coconut had conjured it up. He didn’t know anything about her other than the way she smelled and the nickname he’d bestowed on her, but Dane knew without a doubt that the woman who’d done his laundry, pre-made his coffee, and left him Alka-Seltzer tablets to help his hangover—and had given him a hard-on for the first time in forever—was one and the same.

He had a sudden vision of a woman with brown hair lying next to him on the bed. She’d been fully dressed and he was smelling her hair. He relaxed a bit. He still wasn’t positive, but he had a feeling they hadn’t had sex. He sighed in relief and a little bit of disappointment. Which was fucked; no way did he ever want to take a woman and not remember it. Somehow, he knew to the very marrow of his bones that being inside the mystery woman would be fucking amazing.

Dropping the pillow on the bed, Dane wandered back down the hall and opened the door to the garage. After everything else, he wasn’t all that surprised to find Miss May was there, and he walked around his truck, checking for damage. Nothing. There was another note stuck to the driver’s side window, however.

Miss May is safe. No damage done.

He smirked. She was funny. He had no idea if she was trying to be funny when she’d written the note, but it was obvious they’d had a conversation at some point about the nickname for his truck. He hadn’t dated, or even met, one woman who would voluntarily use a ridiculous nickname thought up by a man for his truck.

Dane opened the driver’s side door and stared at the seat. It was pulled all the way forward; no way he’d be able to fit behind the wheel with it in that position. He nodded, pleased. So he hadn’t driven himself home. Thank God.

Smalls.
Stoker, Susan. Rescuing Bryn (Delta Force Heroes Book 6) (Kindle Locations 757-832). Stoker Aces Publication, LLC. Kindle Edition.

I giggled through that scene and several more in this book. With every little tangent Bryn went off on I giggled a little. Her facts were undeniable but her delivery was amusing.

I think Dane enjoyed listening to them as much as she enjoyed sharing them.

Of course her curiosity leads her to a dangerous situation and Dane is beside himself with fear of losing her.

a Sale on RIDE HARD!

OMG you guys! I’m so excited! Because the first book in my new Raven Riders series is on sale for just $.99 for a limited time AND I’ve got an advance excerpt from the newest book here for you to enjoy!

The Raven Riders is a sexy contemporary romance series, and a spin-off from my Hard Ink world, about a different kind of a motorcycle club with a protective mission.

Ride Hard tells the story of a sheltered woman on the run who’s been rescued by the jaded and tormented president of the Raven Riders, who learns that she’s strong enough to save herself and the man she loves, too.

Ride Wild is the story of a sexy single father wild with grief over the death of his wife several years before and the strong survivor he hires to be his nanny. It’s hot and emotional and I adored writing it! I hope you’ll check both out – plus they’re standalones, so you can jump in anywhere!

Also, did you know that I’m donating a portion of all my sales from Ride Wild through 11/5 to Noah’s Arks Rescue? AND that you can get a bonus story for grabbing your copy?

Now, enjoy this delicious tease from Ride Wild, coming 10/31/17, and grab your copies of BOTH!

Thanks for reading! ~ Laura Kaye

From Ride Wild:

“I don’t know how I’m going to do this.”

“Do what?” Of course, healing from this was going to take some time. And he’d help her with that however he could. And forgiving herself, well, even when there was nothing to forgive, it was possible to beat yourself up till the end of time. Slider knew that too damn well, didn’t he? As for getting justice—or revenge—the Ravens had already taken care of that when they’d killed her degenerate drunk of a father at their racetrack the night Haven’s father attacked the club.

But none of that was what she meant. Instead, she surprised the hell out of him—not with what she revealed, exactly, because he had an inkling. But instead she surprised him with her courage. “Pretend that I don’t have feelings for you,” she said.

If she hadn’t owned him already, she did as of that very moment. Emotion this in his throat, he tried to tell her. “I’ve been such a fucking wreck, Cora.”

“I know. I didn’t admit that to try to make you say anything back.”

He cupped her face in his hand, because he sure as shit was going to respond to that. “I’m a wreck, and I’d convinced myself that I always would be. But lately, I’ve been trying. I’ve been better. Hopeful, for the first time in years.” Admitting that should’ve been freeing, and it was. But, maybe ridiculously, it was also scary as fuck. Because when you’d become wed to a certain narrative of your life, letting go of it threatened to crumble the ground beneath your feet, leaving you with no idea where you’d be left standing when the dust settled.

Her expression went so, so soft. For him. “I’m really glad of that, Slider. So glad you feel better.”

“It’s you, Cora. It’s me, too, some. But you worked your way into my heart and my head and my house and my whole life until I could see again that I had a life. One I’d been neglecting. One I hadn’t been appreciating. So I don’t know how I’m going to pretend either. And frankly, I don’t want to, not anymore. Because I care about you, too. And not just as a friend.”

“You…really?” she asked, her eyes so wide and her face so damn pretty.

God, she didn’t get it, did she? Just how much she’d done to change his life…But he was going to make sure she did from here on out. “Really. I don’t know where we go or what we call it or how public we go with it, but there’s something here. And I want it. I want you.”

review-fall-cornucopia

There is nothing more satisfying than reading about strong kickass women and the men that win their hearts. KaLyn Cooper has done that in spades with this book.

This story starts off with a bang. Under the noses of her ATF team Harper Tambini is taken by Carlos Narváez the head of one of the drug running Cartels. Carlos’ Secundo Rafe is taken by surprise but follows orders to take her to the Narváez compound.

Unknown to Harper, Rafe is CIA and has been undercover for a long time keeping watch on his one time friend. He knows Carlos is becoming more paranoid and using his own product more and more. This scares him especially since he doesn’t know why Harper was taken. He contacts his agency and plans for her extraction and his own.

This is a favorite scene as Rafe wakes Harper after a call with his CIA boss.

Harper stirred. He crept to the bed and bent to shake her shoulder to awaken her.

She grabbed his arm and flipped him onto the bed face down, arms locked behind his back. She held a knife to his throat. His legs splayed, and her knee nudged his crotch.

“Harper,” he choked out in English, “I’m CIA. I’m one of the good guys. Let me up.”

She held her position. “You’re very high ranking in this organization to be CIA. How long have you been under cover?” She kept her face close to his and spoke in undertones.

She was good. He’d never expected that move. “I started at the top. Narváez and I were college roommates. Now can you get off me?” His heart beat rapidly for what seemed to take forever. The cold steel at his throat didn’t quiver. He heard her sigh and the pressure of her knee at his crotch ease.

She finally removed the knife and slid off his back. “I’d hoped someone was inside, but I didn’t think it was you.” She moved quickly away from him and braced herself on her knees, the knife still held in fighting position.

Rafe rolled onto his back and sat up. He rubbed where the blade had pressed, thankful not to feel any blood on his neck. “You’re better than I thought you’d be. I never saw you steal this from the supper table.” He glanced at the satisfied look on her face.

“Yes, I am good. The hardest part was to find some place under that dress that it wouldn’t imprint. The last thing I wanted was Narváez to strip-search me at the supper table.” She shuddered.
KaLyn Cooper. Uncaged Love(Kindle Locations 1292-1307). Kindle Edition.

As we all know the best plans always go awry so, Rafe and Harper proceed to plan B (or is it C) through the jungle. A tense action packed story as they work their way through not only the jungle but also the attraction to one another.  Topping all the action off with explosive sex and a few interesting twists make this a ‘read until you’re finished’ book.
