As a former SEAL commander, Dex Carson had participated in more than his share of rescues. When called upon to lead a multi-agency team into the Virgin Islands National Park jungle to rescue high value targets, he knew he was headed for trouble. Ten teenage girls—whose parents were members of Congress—and their chaperones, needed saving from kidnappers. He cringed. The thought of entitled children and diva mothers made him clench his teeth. When he saw she was on his team, he was ready to quit. His heart couldn’t take it. But a SEAL never quits.

At forty-two, Rayne Yoshida felt too old to go tromping through the jungle after the Speaker of the House’s new wife. The recalcitrant prima donna had slipped her usual Secret Service protection and followed her sweet-as-sugar stepdaughter to the Caribbean on a student work/adventure trip. But as Agent in Charge of the Speaker’s detail, she had to go. Her mood darkened when she saw their team leader, the bull-headed, bossy, but oh so sexy, Dex Carson. They had history…that had almost gotten her fired.

With a category five hurricane bearing down on the tiny island, they only have days to find and rescue the girls and their chaperones…and keep their hands off each other.

This sizzling military romance features a seasoned hero and heroine, second chances, and edge of your seat suspense. SEAL in a Storm is part of the Suspense Sisters new wave of connected books, Silver SEALs.

Silas Branson always seems to know who the best fit for an assignment will be and also where to find them.

Dex is enjoying his retirement and with the help of another former SEAL has found the perfect spot for big mouth bass. As he reels in his second catch his phone rings and even though he tries to ignore it, he can’t.

Normally Silas would have to meet in person but thanks to Guardian Security, Dex is able to secure his phone. He knew before Si even finished he would be taking this one and done mission.

The addition of Secret Service Agent Rayne Yoshida to his team has Dex recalling the past.

Rayne knows all the girls and the adults that are with them. Although she is primarily concerned with only two of them. The Speaker of the House’s daughter and wife.

This is a favorite scene as she throws a major curve at his initial plan.

He signaled for her to sit across from him. “You’ll be staying on St. Thomas with the FBI women.” It was a statement, not a question.
“No. I’ll be on the breaching team.” She hoped her voice would have been softer, but Rayne had never been good at hiding her feelings.Dex narrowed his eyes. “That’s my call, not yours.”“The women from the FBI have a completely different mission than I do. Callie and Angelique Sedgwick are my responsibility. I’m going in to get them,” she insisted. “And if Jaja gets in my way, he’s going down along with everyone else who dared to kidnap those children.” She hadn’t meant to pause, so she quickly added, “and the four women.”

“I’m in charge of this team and you’ll do what I tell you to do.” Dex leaned forward and put his forearms on the table.

Rayne was not going to be intimidated by that tactic. She had gone to the same Navy Officers Candidate School as Dex. Then she had additional training at Judge Advocate School before working in the JAG office as an investigator, even though she had a law degree. She’d always preferred to be the one kicking down doors. After completing her tour in the Navy, she’d been recruited as an investigator for the Secret Service because she was damn good at her job.

Until she had literally fucked up one night with the hunk of testosterone sitting across from her.

She couldn’t go there now. She had to rescue Callie…and the Speaker’s wife.

To counter his move, she mirrored it by placing her forearms on the table and leaning forward as well.

“This is a joint task force and I am the Secret Service representative. I will be there to rescue Callie and Angelique.” Without realizing it, Rayne had moved even closer until her nose was only two inches from Dex’s. Aware of their closeness, but unwilling to back off, she held her position and stared into eyes the color of good whiskey.

“I see you’re still the ballbuster you were twelve years ago.” Dex straightened his back as he sat up.

Once again, she mirrored his move. “I didn’t get to be the highest-ranking woman in personal protection by allowing misogynistic men to walk all over me.”

His eyebrows pinched together. “I thought you’re on the investigative side?”

Damn. She did not want to talk about this. But maybe it was time he learned how badly he had damaged her career. “I had to switch career paths eleven years ago after I was finally cleared of any wrongdoing in Nigeria if I wanted to stay with the Secret Service.” She glared at him. “I like working for this agency and didn’t want to give up my job.”

She noticed her name on the personnel file in front of him and tapped it with her index finger. “I’m sure everything you need to know is in there.” She spread her arms wide. “I can assure you I have kept in top physical condition, a requirement for my job.” She started to stand up. “Now, Commander Carson, unless you have specific questions for me concerning this mission, I’ll just return to my seat.”

“Sit down,” he ordered sharply.

She debated just turning and leaving but thought better of it. She was expected to be a team player and he was the team leader, no matter how much she hated that fact. She had given him her word that she would follow his orders.

When his gaze met hers, his eyes softened. “Please.”

She settled back into the plush captain’s chair. As the Speaker of the House, Robert Sedgwick was given first-class treatment everywhere he went.

Even though she had become accustomed to executive jets, she had to admit that this one was exceptionally nice.

“First, it’s no longer Commander Carson.”

That was a shock. When they had worked together over a decade before, Dex had wanted to make a career out of the Navy, the lifer kind where they were going to have to throw him out after thirty years.

Her heart beat faster. Had he been dishonorably discharged after the Nigeria incident? No. She had cleared his name, even though he hadn’t done the same for her. She had proven to the investigators that Dex had nothing to do with the hookers.

Had something else gone wrong during the years that followed?

“It’s now just Dex. I retired over a year ago,” he explained.

She quickly did the math and realized he had been in the Navy for twenty years, the requirement for retirement. Rayne still wondered why he had left the job he had always loved. Maybe, like her, his career path had to change.

He brought her back to the present and the situation at hand. “I need you to talk to me about these little girls.”

Rayne didn’t consider Callie and her friends as ‘little girls.’ Young ladies, yes.

“Do you think that each man on the breaching team could carry two girls to safety?” He cocked his elbows out to the side as though he were holding small children.

“No. I don’t believe they can.”

Shock washed over his face. “Have you seen the size of the men on this team?”

“Yes. But I also know the size of these girls.” She tried to explain, “At twelve and thirteen years old, they’ve reached their adult height. They are all between five foot four inches and five foot nine.”

Dex’s eyebrows shot up.

“These are young ladies, not little children.”
KaLyn Cooper. SEAL in a Storm (Kindle Locations 631-674). Kindle Edition.

An intense, dramatic and suspenseful tale as Dex and the team, not only try find where the girls are being held but also the reason why.

Even though Rayne and Dex are angry with each other the almost electric attraction is still there and comes sizzling to the surface when it was needed the most.

I loved that KaLyn included some of the Guardian Security team and a little peak at the Black Swans as well.

There’s plenty of action, surprises and so much more to make this a book you won’t want to miss.

Rear Admiral Dag Creasy has enjoyed a long, successful naval career. It’s not all been smooth sailing, but his beautiful and generous wife, Brenae, has been at his side for nearly three decades, helping him weather every storm. He loves her more than words can express, their relationship only growing stronger with every year. Now, they’re both excited and anxious for the completion of their dream home, where they’ll start the next chapter of their lives together…

If an unexpected menace doesn’t cut their storybook romance short.

** Securing Brenae is a short story in the SEAL of Protection: Legacy Series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.

This ebook version contains two brand new chapters that aren’t available in the audio podcast edition (Read Me Romance)!

I love Susan Stoker’s books. It doesn’t matter how long or how short the stories are enthralling.

It’s rare to see the higher ranking officers in a story, but in the first book of this series we do meet Rear Admiral Dag Creasy. This is more about him and his wife Brenae.

A love story of the highest order, as we see Dag in the aftermath of the circumstances that brought down a man who was his friend.

Brenae is the ultimate Navy wife, she has stood beside Dag from the beginning of his career to the present, from SEAL to Admiral it’s been quite the journey.

After several minutes of cuddling, she asked sleepily, “What do you have on tap for today?”

“PT. Then a meeting with the base commander about what happened last week and to get an update on his replacement. Then I’m meeting with each of the SEAL teams to answer their questions and to reassure them that they will absolutely be safe when they go overseas on a mission in the interim. I have to go to NCIS and answer questions about the traitor from Bahrain, and to find out if I’ll have to testify in his hearing. I have a stack of paperwork a mile high I have to try to get through, and then hopefully convince my admin that she doesn’t want to quit as a result.”

“So a normal day,” Brenae quipped.

Dag chuckled. “Pretty much.”

“You thought any more about retirement?”

Dag stiffened and propped himself up on an elbow and tried to read her face. The light was too low for him to interpret what she was thinking. “You know all you have to do is say the word and I’m done,” he said softly.

“I wasn’t hinting,” Brenae chided. “I just hate seeing you so stressed. I mean, I know you’re pretty much always stressed, but the last week has been worse. I wasn’t sure if everything that happened had tipped the scales, making you want to get out sooner rather than later.”

Dag thought about it for a long moment. Then finally said, “Honestly, everything about that situation sucked, but I feel as if I’m needed even more now. I’m not so conceited to think that no one else can do my job, but with everything else going on, I have a feeling keeping things as normal as possible is the best thing for everyone. SEALs, their families, and my own bosses.”

“I agree,” Brenae said softly. “I’m so proud of you, Dag.”

“As long as you can say that, I’m good. The second that changes, I’m out.”

“I’ll always be proud of you,” she said. “Always.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

“I’ve still got another hour before I have to get up and get ready for work,” Dag told her. “Go back to sleep, baby.”

“You too?” she asked sleepily.

“Sure,” Dag told her, but he knew he was lying. One of this favorite things in the world was holding her while she slept. He’d never told her, but he loved how easily she fell asleep in his arms. How she innately trusted him to keep her safe no matter what.

The second he felt her deep, even breaths, he leaned over and kissed her forehead. “I swear the next thirty years are going to be easier than the first,” he vowed.
Stoker, Susan. Securing Brenae: SEAL of Protection: Legacy, Book 1.5. Stoker Aces Production, LLC. Kindle Locations (460-481). Kindle Edition.

Now keeping in mind this is Susan Stoker, you know it’s not going to be all cuddles and love. Brenae and Caite find themselves in a fix without their phones. I could feel the shift from day to day to mission, when Rocco and Dag hear of the issue and take off to assess the situation.

I loved the way Brenae and Dag can interpret each others thoughts. Almost the same as Dag can with his teams.

With lots of love, laughter, tears, sizzling heat and just a bit of action, these two are an awesome couple and I hope we see more of them in this series.

The bigger problem: one of his team members is the attractive—off limits—single mother of a Navy SEAL he once commanded.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogo

I love these retired SEAL commanders, they still the amazing men they were albeit with a few more aches and pains.

In this one, Silas ‘Crash’ Branson taps retired SEAL Commander Archer Malone for a DHS mission in New York. Chatter has it that a group that Archer is familiar with from a bombing overseas is planning something possibly with the Federal Reserve.

Now the DHS agent he will be working with is known to him. Sandy Vickers is the mother of a SEAL, one who had been under his command when they first met. That put her immediately in the do not get involved category.

This is a favorite scene.

During the elevator ride to the lobby with Silas, Sandy, and two other men who’d stepped on with them, Archer shifted his stance and weighed his options. His team still had an analyst, but she was also another pair of “boots on the ground.” Experience had taught him it was always beneficial to have extra.

The man in him wanted to keep her locked up and safe, but the commander in him was pleased to have an extra gun.

Halfway to the lobby, the elevator stopped, and the two men exited, leaving the three of them alone.

When the doors closed, Sandy peered around him to look at his boss. “Mr. Branson,” she said, her voice sounding softer in the small confines of the elevator, and an unexpected shiver shot down his neck. “Correct me if I’m wrong, but I get the impression you have another question for me.”

His friend’s lips twitched. “You are correct. And astute. And please, call me Silas.”

“Silas.” She smiled. “What is it you want to know?”

For a split second, a devious expression appeared on Silas’ face, reminding Archer of the old Crash persona from the past, but it disappeared so fast he must’ve imagined it. “Would you be able to take Archer back to Jersey tonight? Or should I send the chopper back for him later?”

That rat bastard son-of-a-bitch…

“I’ll make sure he gets home safely,” she replied, smile evident in her tone.

He glanced at Sandy to see for himself, and the sight of her biting her lip to keep from laughing canceled his annoyance and ignited something a hell of a lot more dangerous.

Hunger.

Was this how it was always going to be? Could he not look at the woman without wanting to strip her naked and lose himself inside her? Whoa. Where the hell had that thought come from? Damn. His attraction to Sandy was morphing at an exponential rate.

And they’d only been around each other for an hour.

He watched her smile slowly disappear, and the amusement in her eyes transform into an answering heat. Red flags immediately waved wildly in his head. Her response to him hit Archer in the solar plexus with the force of an invisible right hook.

By the time the elevator reached the lobby, two things became perfectly clear.

One—he was going to kill Silas.

Two—he had no damn defense against Sandy’s attraction to him.

If he dug deep, he could fight his own attraction to her…keep his thoughts and his hands to himself.

But not if she didn’t want him to…

When they exited the building, he buried those thoughts—deep—and shoved on his sunglasses. Sandy was doing something on her phone, so he turned to Silas and shook hands. “Give me a day or two and I’ll have a SITREP for you.”

“A’ight.” His buddy nodded, glancing up and down the street, before his gaze returned, and he released his hand. “Watch your six.”

I fell in love with not only Archer and Sandy, but also the rest of the team on this mission. TJ is a hoot and Bella and Matteo well, they’re a great team and dang she’s blood-thirsty.

Lots of hold your breath action, sizzling heat and suspense.

It’s all my mother’s fault.

She read to me before I could read and opened up that magical world where I still reside today. Then came television and movies. Now I had three avenues that fed my imagination…and boy could I eat! As you no doubt figured out, this lead to my writing career. I’m a NY Times, USA Today, and Amazon Bestselling Award winng author. Phew, that was a mouthful! Multi-published in e-book and print with several publishers, I certainly have a ton of voices in my head.

I’m happily married to a military man for 28 years. We have four children and several rescued cats. Michael’s been in the Army National Guard since before he graduated. The Guard has been a part of our lives right from the start. It was only natural for the military to spill into my writing. God bless the military and their families. Thank you all for your sacrifices. ♥

You already know my mom inspired my love of reading, but it was my dad who got me hooked on movies. Even now, if I had the time, I could happily go from one movie to another all day long. They are the reason I love mixed genre and why I can’t just stick to just one in my writing, although, as you can tell, I have a soft spot for cowboys and the military.

Well, that’s about it. Thanks for getting to know me a little better. Remember, keep reading to your children. The journey you’re igniting is precious. And the next time you’re at the movies, turn around. I just might be the person sitting behind you. No, not the one throwing popcorn (it’s too expensive to waste). I’m the one already imagining the sequel.

Have a great day and thanks for reading!

Mercer – Butler Ranch Book 4 By Heather Slade

Mercer
Butler Ranch Book 4

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

He promised to protect her…
Not to love her.

Head of a private security firm, Mercer Bryant promised his partner, Kade Butler, that he’d secretly protect Quinn Sullivan at any cost. As a former CIA operative, Mercer knows his way around intense and stealthy operations. Trained in combat, he can get out of any situation—and into any woman’s bed. But when he starts to feel something more for the innocent and stunning Quinn, he can’t stay away.

Shipped off to a boarding school at a young age, the independent and feisty Quinn doesn’t need a man to watch over her. But when she finds herself in danger, the only place she feels safe is the arms of the irresistible and rugged Marine.

Hell bent on protecting her, Mercer takes on the vengeful Russians who are responsible for his partner’s disappearance. With peril imminent and time running out, can Mercer save Quinn before the truth destroys their chance at a future together?

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

This series has many twists and turns. Every book drops a bomb shell or three. In Naughton we met Quinn, she is Lena’s daughter and according to her birth certificate Kade’s.

Mercer is part owner of K19 a security company, one that Kade had been part of. Before Kade left on his last mission he assigned people to protect his family, all of them. Mercer’s assignment is Quinn. Even though he has watched over her since she was a teen, he sees her as the woman she has become and he is falling hard for her. It’s worse now that he is her neighbor living just down the hallway.

Quinn’s friends Aine and Ava drag her to a party and she is anxious to leave when she spots Mercer. She’s about to call a car service when he offers her a ride home.

This is a favorite scene.

When Quinn dozed off, Mercer let out the breath it felt like he’d been holding since they got in the car. His preoccupation with what he’d done earlier in the day made him sloppy. And tonight, instead of finding her without her knowing he was looking, she’d found him. He was glad she had, though. Otherwise, who knows how she would’ve gotten home. Southampton was a solid two hours from their building, with plenty of desolate areas along the way. He cringed, thinking about the danger she might’ve put herself in.

He looked over at her several times while she slept. The moonlight shone on her almost-white blonde hair and cast a glow on her flushed cheeks, likely so from too much time in the sun. Every day she grew more beautiful as he watched her change from a teenager to a young woman.

Mercer shook his head and silently cursed his former boss, the man responsible for the temptation he faced every day.

Mercer drove into the underground garage and parked in his reserved spot, but Quinn didn’t budge.

“We’re back,” he said softly, so tempted to stroke his finger down her cheek.

She sat up with a start. “Oh. I’m so sorry. Did I really sleep all the way back? How inconsiderate of me,” she babbled.

“You were tired.”

She stretched her arms above her head, and her t-shirt rode up just a little, exposing the skin on her stomach. When Mercer looked up, her eyes were on him, knowing he’d stolen a peek.

Her gaze lingered long enough that he couldn’t resist. He leaned forward, pulled her close to him, and brought his lips to hers. Quinn rested her palm on his thigh and opened her sweet mouth to his. He tightened his grip and deepened their kiss, until her groan brought him back to the reality of what he was doing. This wasn’t a fantasy; his lips really were on hers, and the fruit he’d just tasted was forbidden.

He backed away, not allowing himself to look into her eyes. If he did, he’d lose what little resolve he possessed. Instead, he opened his door, walked around, and opened hers.

“Thank you,” she whispered as she climbed out, touching her lips with her fingertips.

“You’re welcome.”

“You were my savior tonight, Mr. Mercer.” She stepped away from the car so he could close the door.

“Just Mercer,” he responded absentmindedly.

She had no idea how hard she’d just hit the nail on the head. Savior might not be the most accurate word. More like protector.

She waited for him to press the button when they got to the elevator, just like she’d waited for him to open her door. This was a woman who’d been taught that there was nothing wrong with letting a man take the lead. She understood it was about respect, not anyone believing she was incapable. Her manners were impeccable; he’d seen evidence of it often enough. As usual, he was filled with a sense of pride, even though he had nothing to do with her upbringing, no responsibility for her behavior.

When they reached the eleventh floor, Mercer didn’t walk Quinn to her door. From the rounded corner he leaned against, he could see that she got safely inside her apartment without the possibility of her inviting him in.

She waved from just inside her door. “Sweet dreams, Mr. Mercer,” she said and blew him a kiss.

“Just Mercer,” he said to himself after Quinn’s door had closed behind her.

He entered the keypad code and rested his thumb on the print reader until he heard the click unlocking his door. He stalked inside, slamming it behind him.

He turned around, rested his head against the wall, and closed his eyes. He took a deep breath as the promise he’d made repeated in his head. He’d vowed to watch over her, protect her, and keep her and the family safe. Talking to her, touching her, kissing her, or dreaming about her weren’t part of that vow. Dreams were out of his control, but the rest of it—he knew better.
Slade, Heather. Mercer (Butler Ranch Book 4) (pp. 16-19). Sparrow Publishing. Kindle Edition.

As we follow Quinn and Mercer we travel through the timeline of the previous books and see how Quinn’s life was affected by those events. It also explains the ‘Kade’ sightings and how K19 is involved.

So many surprises as more things become clear and others far more complicated.

I laughed, cried, screamed and couldn’t put this book down until I turned the final page.

Familiar Trouble – Familiar Legacy Book 1 by Carolyn Haines

Familiar Trouble
Familiar Legacy Book 1
By
USA Today Bestselling Author
Carolyn Haines

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

BLOOD IS THICKER… Sometimes a unique talent is inherited—and such is the case for Trouble, son of Familiar the black cat detective. Trouble’s rather indolent life in the sleepy town of Wetumpka, Alabama is upended when a serial killer arrives on the scene. Trouble begins to apply the skills he learned from his dad and his hero, Sherlock Holmes.

When local bookseller Tammy Lynn is attacked at the site of an impact crater, Trouble realizes he must protect his human and solve the mystery of the Silk Stocking Killer.

Aiden Waters, a local deputy, has tracked the SSK to Wetumpka. Since his wife’s murder, Aiden won’t risk romance, but when Tammy is endangered, everything changes. Especially their hearts.

I started this multi-author series at the end instead of the beginning and knew I had to go to the start. I love Trouble, the black cat with a penchant for mysteries. His and I quote ‘biped’ Tammy Lynn is the hard-headed owner of the local bookstore. Tammy is an avid reader and loves the Indian lore that surrounds her hometown of Wetumpka. It’s that lore that has her trespassing on property to get a good spot to look for a foretold planet and the discovery of a body.

This is a favorite scene.

Now I must comfort my princess. She’s upset and Deputy Aiden Waters is pulling in beside the tow truck. I’ve seen the way she casts glances at him. I’m sure she’d rather he offer her comfort, but she’s stuck with me. For the moment at least. Aiden and Tammy are perfect for each other, though they’re too scared to see it. She’s been hurt before by her own hand. She moved to D.C. with her fiancé but missed Wetumpka more than she loved him. She can’t see if her affections had been given to the right man, it would have had a different outcome. Bipeds complicate everything. And Aiden has obviously suffered some loss that’s taken a toll on his spirit. Both of them are terrified of caring—and trusting—again. Humanoids! I hate to say it but if they would just throw a leg over and get on with it, I believe all things would work out.

I’m not Cupid, though. My father, Familiar, often played Cupid to the bipeds he helped. I’m not so sure I’m versed in the romance department. But you never know. Time will tell.

Uh-oh. Tammy is trying hard not to cry in front of Aiden, and he’s too embarrassed to comfort her. I guess I will intervene.

Let me just take a running jump on his arse and voila! He leaps forward and embraces her. Mission accomplished. Maybe I do have a bit of Eros in me. My dad would be so proud!

Aiden looked back at the black cat sitting so innocently on the ground. Right. Instead of saying anything, he turned his attention to the woman in his arms. He’d had to embrace Tammy to keep from knocking her down when the cat attacked him. The animal was a menace, but Tammy felt really good in his arms.

“I’m okay,” Tammy said, looking up at him.

She wasn’t wearing her glasses, and her hazel eyes shifted between gray and green with golden brown flecks. “Of course.” He started to release her and step back, but his arms simply didn’t want to let her go.

She buried her forehead against his jacket and he felt her shudder as she collected herself. “I can’t believe Debby is dead. Who would do such an awful thing?”

“The sheriff only said you’d found a dead body. Why don’t you tell me what happened?”

As Aiden held her, she told him everything. “And she’s naked with a nylon stocking tied around her neck.”

Aiden couldn’t stop his body from tightening up. “Are you sure?”

“I am.” Tammy pushed back so she could see into his eyes. “That means something to you, doesn’t it?”

He nodded. “I’m going to let Barney take you home in the wrecker. He said he’d fix the tires or replace them, depending, and bring the car to you. I need to go up to the site and determine how to collect the body without destroying any evidence.”

“Trouble and I can help you.”

Aiden gave her shoulders a gentle squeeze. “I’d better do this on my own. But I’ll check on you as soon as I can.”

“Thank you.”

He helped her into the wrecker and watched as Barney drove her and the black cat away. Trouble looked out the back window and licked one paw, as if he’d just had a very satisfying meal. That cat had an agenda.
Carolyn Haines. Familiar Trouble (Kindle Locations 315-340). KaliOka Press. Kindle Edition.

Fast-paced with plenty of chuckles thanks to Trouble. Aiden and Tammy both have some issues to work out and as the murderer escalates so does the danger to Tammy.

Of course she doesn’t help by putting herself in precarious positions when she should just stay put.

I’m really enjoying these books, Trouble is a piece of work and there’s the perfect amount of romance.

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Susan Stoker comes a new story in her Delta Force Heroes series…

After years of estrangement, Mercedes Laughlin has finally reconciled with her older brother. It should be the happiest time of her life, getting to know Truck and his new wife…and it would be, if an ex wasn’t causing her trouble. Add in Truck’s boss, Colonel Colton Robinson, an amazingly distracting man whom she met under embarrassing circumstances, and Macie’s got a bit more on her plate than she can handle.

From the moment they met, Colt was fascinated by Macie, and helping her through an anxiety attack at her brother’s wedding didn’t diminish the appeal. He’d do his best to sweep her off her feet, if not for a little voice telling him to tread lightly—until a frantic phone call changes the plan. Macie’s being targeted, and Colt’s determined to keep her safe while he and her brother eliminate the threat.

Colt isn’t about to let his friend lose his sister again so soon…or miss his own chance at a happy ending with Macie before they’ve barely had a beginning.

** For fans of Susan’s Delta Force Heroes, Rescuing Macie is book 9.5 in that series**

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

Every time I pick up a Susan Stoker book I know I’m in for an emotional adventure. I fell in love with Colt and Macie when I read the teaser at the end of Rescuing Mary.

Colt is beyond patient with Macie and her brother Truck is going to have to get used to the fact that his commander is going to be hanging around.

Truck gets a frantic call from his sister Macie as the team is being debriefed, someone is in her apartment. Every one jumps into action to help her but it’s Colt who manages to calm her.

Anxiety and panic attacks are a hidden problem since no one wants to talk about them. Susan handles them with finesse and tact as they are woven into this tale.

Romance, heat, laughter and tears round out Colt and Macie’s relationship much to Truck’s initial dismay.

Keep reading for an excerpt that is also a favorite scene of mine featuring the women of the Delta Force Team.

I look forward to the next series with the new Delta team.

“Everything good?” he asked.

Macie nodded.

“No, Macie,” he said as he put a hand on the side of her neck and leaned in. “Are you good?”

She couldn’t help the small smile that broke out. “I’m good,” she told him. “Really. I liked them. Annie is hysterical, and I loved getting to know Emily and Casey more.”

“And Mary? Did she behave?”

Macie must’ve hesitated a moment too long, because Colt sighed and pulled back. He reached for her hand and pulled her into the living room. He sat on the couch and tugged Macie down onto his lap. He put his arms around her waist and held her firmly.

Macie stared at him in shock. They’d slept curled up next to each other every night, and Colt never hesitated to touch her, to caress her cheek or run a hand over her hair. But he’d never simply hauled her around before—at least, not since the night of the break-in—and she hadn’t sat on anyone’s lap since she was five years old.

Not sure where to put her hands, she rested them in her lap awkwardly.

“What’d she say?” Colt asked.

“Nothing.”

“Mace,” he said more gently. “I can tell she said something. I mean, it’s Mary, she can’t help herself, it’s part of her charm.” He smiled. “Now tell me, so I can reassure you about whatever it was, and then I’ll go get us some dinner. I’m hungry.”

It was the last bit that made Macie change her mind about telling him. She had a feeling he would sit there all night if she didn’t spill. He was that stubborn. But his stubbornness was one of the many reasons she was crazy about him.

Pushing those feelings to the back of her mind, refusing to think about them right now, she said, “I’m sure she was exaggerating, or that she simply doesn’t know the truth.”

“About what?”

Taking a deep breath, Macie said, “She was just trying to make sure I knew what this was. What was happening here. And she told me about you killing a bunch of people when your friend was captured.”

She felt Colt’s thigh muscles tense under her butt, and it seemed as if the air in the room thickened with emotion.

Oh shit. Why had she told him? She should’ve made something up. She was such an idiot! Now he was going to tell her she couldn’t stay at his house anymore, that he couldn’t help her. She should’ve kept her big mouth shut!

The Reluctant Princess – Her Royal Duty Book 1 by Melissa McClone

The Reluctant Princess
Her Royal Duty Book 1
By
USA Today Bestselling Author
Melissa McClone

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

She wants to work on a pit crew—not be a princess.

Mechanic Isabel “Izzy” Poussard’s life revolves around cars. Determined to be a member of a racing team’s pit crew, she’ll do whatever it takes to make her dream come true. The last thing she expects is for a gorgeous guy to step out of a limousine and tell her she’s a long-lost princess…and his wife.

Crown Prince Nikola “Niko” Kresimir of Vernonia wants one thing from Isabel—an annulment. The pretty American wearing grease-stained coveralls is too rough around the edges to be the future queen. Their marriage, the result of an archaic custom neither knew about, needs to end so he can modernize his country.

As sparks fly, Niko and Izzy fight their growing attraction for each other. Neither wants to remain in an arranged marriage, but that might be the only way to keep peace in the kingdom. Is a love match possible where all their dreams can come true? Or will aspirations and pride keep them from living happily ever after?

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogo

No one is more surprised than Izzy when a limo shows up at the garage where she works. The occupant is even more shocking, a prince who claims she is his wife. All because of a box that belonged to her mother that she is looking for a key to open it.

Prince Niko now has a problem, he has a fiancé, Princess Juliana, their marriage will help rebuild and modernized his country following the conflict that had taken his brother’s life. Not a love match but one that is advantageous for both their countries. He needs Izzy to agree to an annulment so things can move forward as planned.

This is a favorite scene.

Unease crept down Izzy’s spine. The seriousness of the situation ratcheted up a notch with two lawyers present.

“My paralegal checked out the prince’s claims about the marriage while I drove over here,” Duncan said. “Vernonia had an old custom of children from royal families marrying but that is illegal now. A groom, however, still presents his wife with a bride box on their wedding night.”

Izzy bit her lip. That didn’t mean she was his wife.

“We may proceed now,” Niko said.

The tension in the office quadrupled. Izzy’s legs shook so much the box jiggled. She placed it on Rowdy’s desk and opened the lid. She removed the velvet-covered tray so the keyhole showed. “I didn’t realize the tray came out or there was a keyhole until after Uncle Frank died. He allowed me to see the box when I was growing up but never touch it.”

“Did your uncle say it belonged to your mother?” Duncan asked.

“No, but I assumed so.” Izzy hoped what she said wouldn’t give more credence to the prince’s claims.

“Uncle Frank told me it was important.”

Niko held the key he’d worn around his neck. “Let us see how important.”

His hand was as steady as a neurosurgeon’s. If it had been her, she would be trembling. Who was she kidding? She was trembling.

He inserted the key in the hole.

Izzy was tempted to close her eyes. She held her breath instead. She wanted to know what was inside, but she wanted nothing the prince had told her to be true.

He turned the key.

Click.

“The key fits,” Niko announced.

The air whooshed from her lungs.

No, this can’t be happening. It can’t be true.

The bottom portion slid out. A hidden drawer.

“Would ya look at that,” Rowdy said with a hint of awe.

Even though she had been waiting for this moment, she was afraid to look. Her curiosity vanished, replaced by trepidation. She didn’t care what was inside. She only wanted things to be the way they’d been before Prince Niko arrived.

“It’s the same tiara,” Jovan said from across the office.

No. Isabel didn’t want to see, so she squeezed her eyes shut. Her chest constricted. She shuddered.

Someone touched her shoulder and squeezed gently. Rowdy. Both he and Boyd could be big-old teddy bears. She opened her eyes, but Niko’s hand was on her.

“Isabel.” Concern filled Niko’s voice. “Would you rather wait?”

His tenderness brought tears. The situation, not him. Still, she appreciated his gesture of comfort, drew strength from it, too. “No.”

Straightening, Izzy peered into the drawer, past the small diamond tiara to find papers, photographs, and more jewelry. Her uncle Frank could have found the box, bought it at a garage sale, or stolen it in desperation. Maybe that was why she had no key.

No, she was being silly now. None of those things would explain Niko knowing her mother’s name or his key fitting the lock. Isabel needed to accept what was in front of her, except…
Melissa McClone. The Reluctant Princess (Kindle Locations 503-534). Cardinal Press, LLC.

A princess of a country she’s never been to, leads Izzy to a journey even more difficult than she could imagine.

This story becomes even more complicated when the King refuses to let them annul the marriage stating it would cause irrevocable damage to the peace.

I also fell in love with Princess Juliana she is definitely a class act and is instrumental in helping Izzy manage her new role.

A delightful story of an interesting marriage that leads to falling in love. With some laughter, some tears and just enough heat this book is a must read.

Nicholas

They say an eye for an eye, and God knows I deserve every punishment for the things I’ve done. But when Alison comes sweeping into my life like an angel of death, begging for mercy is the last thing on my mind.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

Nicholas aka Nico Case has been played. Not only did his ex-wife take him for a bundle, she also emptied their joint accounts. To top it off his ‘friend’ and accountant let it happen.

With his trust fund locked by his father, Nico is broke and decides to take his brother Declan up on his offer to stay at his new vineyard. What he finds is a bottle of Grappa on the table and dives into it before crashing on the couch.

Alison is Declan’s winemaker, she was highly recommended by Danny who has connections just about everywhere. She has some secrets, but she never expected Nicholas Case to show up on her couch in the middle of the night.

This is a favorite scene.

She lets out a squeak and lowers the pan, a dusky flush creeping across her chest. “I work for Declan,” she grits indignantly. “But you still haven’t told me who you are.”

I drop my head- it takes too much effort to be upright at the moment, and I study her through half-lidded eyes. What kind of game is she playing here? She’s looking at me like she knows me. Really knows me. But I swear I’ve never seen her before in my life. I don’t recognize her voice, or her body. And I’m pretty sure, once the err… creative face covering is removed, I’m not going to recognize her face either. “I think you know who I am.” I don’t have the energy to be coy.

She lets out a sigh. “You’re Nicholas Case, aren’t you?”

“Nico.” I raise my wrists again. “I’d shake your hand…” I shrug.

“Why are you here? Declan didn’t mention anything about visitors.”

The stabbing above my left eye starts again. “He invited me here weeks ago. Ask him.” I crack open an eye, immediately drawn to dark buds puckered tight and pushing through the sheer fabric, teasing me with how untouchable they are. They might as well be eyeing me through a glass wall. I force myself back to neutral territory. “So you’re the foreman? Very progressive of Dec.”

She makes that squeaky noise deep in her throat again. “Hardly. I’m the winemaker.”

That makes me sit up, albeit too fast, as my head angrily reminds me.

“Wait. Dec’s making wine?” Sonofagun. He’s never shown the faintest interest.

“No. I’m making wine. That’s why he hired me. That’s why-” She shakes her head. “Why’m I telling you this?”

I flash her a mischievous grin. “Because I’m the kind of guy women love to confide in.” Not. So not. If anything, I was the kind of guy mothers forbid their daughters to date. But maybe I’m about to turn over a new leaf.

She’s not buying it. She scoffs. “Good to know you’re still a bullshitter,” she retorts with a huff.

“Wait. Do we know each other?”

She freezes, but it’s so fucking hard to read her with that thing covering her face, I can’t tell what she’s thinking. “No,” she says firmly with a shake of her head. “The papers have said all anyone needs to know about you.” Truth. My brothers and I have been fodder for both the society pages and the gossip rags since we were probably sixteen. But she’d only know that if she’s from here. “What did you say your name was?”

She cocks her head, eyes narrowing. “Alison.”

“Alison?”

Her mouth thins as if she’s having some kind of inner battle with herself. “Alison Walker.”

“A pleasure to meet you. Alison.” I catch her eyes and let my mouth linger over her name. It’s as sensuous on the tongue as her body would be underneath me. If only we could resolve the small issue of the duct tape.

Something hot flares in the deep dark depths of her eyes, and she clears her throat. “Stay here.”

Like I’m going anywhere. I stare unabashedly as she turns and hurries down the hall, still clutching the frying pan. Her barely-there nighty barely covering the plump curves of her ass as it sways in time with her hips.

Holy. Hell.

Maybe there’s a silver lining in this nightmare after all.
Tessa Layne. Mr. Red (Kindle Locations 176-177). Shady Layne Media.

I really got a kick out of these two. Alison puts Nico to work and even while he grumbles he has to respect what she is doing with the vineyard.

The hot and heavy relationship develops quickly, but of course the rest of Nico’s family crap has to rear it’s ugly head.

A page turning read with a surprise or three. I can’t wait to read Danny’s story in Mr. Whiskey.

ARC Review of Mastering Rayne – Club Zodiac Book 4 by Becca Jameson

Mastering Rayne
Club Zodiac Book 4
By
Becca Jameson

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Secrets can turn into lies if they’re kept for too long…

For Rayne, guarding deep family secrets is a way of life. It’s ingrained. It prevents her from ever getting close to anyone.

Colin is building a new life in Denver. He has a club to open, a personal training business to grow, and an abused sister to rescue.

Rayne and Colin have known each other for years, but they’ve never scened together. Until now… A chance meeting in a club can change everything.

There’s just one problem. Colin’s ex-girlfriend made him extremely leery of women who are hiding something. Secrets raise huge red flags.

Their chemistry is undeniable. Ropes, blindfolds, workout benches, bed posts, spankings, denial…

They click. Rayne knows it. Colin knows it. But the secrets get in the way. Without trust, there is no foundation.

Mastering Rayne is the fourth book in the Club Zodiac series. It features Rayne, a character fans will remember from Training Sasha. The hero is Master Colin, a character from another local club, Breeze. Master Colin also made an appearance in Dark Nightmares, which released in November of 2018 in the Dark Falls series.

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogo

I love this series, Becca has written several types of BDSM relationships into a series that shows how different they can be. In this book we get to know Rayne and Colin.

Colin and Aaron have moved to Denver to open a new Zodiac club. The Miami club is now a huge success and they are ready to expand. Colin was particularly pleased to take on this site since his sister lives in Denver and he believes she is in an abusive relationship and wants to get her out of it and safe.

One of Rayne’s many secrets is she was raised in Denver. She moved back to her family home on graduating with her law degree and is a now a successful divorce attorney. This is fortuitous since Colin’s sister London is in need of one although she isn’t quite ready to file.

Colin has watched Rayne and they have been acquaintances since she was with Rowan, but he has never done a scene with her. Although that is about to change as they run into each other at Roses and Thorns.

This is a favorite scene.

Finally, she slowly turned around, and a flush ran up her chest as she confirmed her suspicion. Colin Wynne. He had his back to her, but there was no mistaking his muscular shoulders, bulging arms, and the distinctive tattoo on one arm. He was more filled out than she remembered him. Bulkier than a year ago.

Even though she’d just seen him on Tuesday, she hadn’t been able to appreciate his full physique. He’d had on a button-up shirt and slacks. Tonight, however… Lordy.

He was wearing a tight black T-shirt and dark blue jeans. He was also handling a long length of rope, which didn’t surprise her since she’d often seen him create amazing artistic designs with nothing more than a woman’s body and several feet of rope.

As she approached, drawn like a magnet, he must have sensed her because he slowly turned around.

The smile that lit up his face made her heart race. God, he was sexy tonight. His hair was longer on top than it had been in Miami, the locks falling across his forehead.

“Rayne…” His voice was deep and rough.

“Hey,” she responded, licking her lips and feeling like a dork. Normally, in her day-to-day world, she was confident to the point of cocky, but as she closed the distance with Colin, she felt anything but confident.

She had no idea what he’d ever thought of her, or even if he had ever considered her for a moment.

“Are you a member here?” he asked. “I haven’t seen you around. Granted, I’ve only been here a half a dozen times myself.”

She shook her head. “No. This is my first time.” Shit. Wouldn’t he wonder why she picked tonight? The first weekend night since he’d stepped into her office?

He lifted a brow. “Really? Do you belong to another club in the Denver area?”

“No.” Suddenly chilled under his scrutiny, she crossed her arms and rubbed her biceps with her palms. “I haven’t had time to explore much.”

“You’ve been here a year,” he pointed out.

“Yes.”

Slowly he nodded. And then he glanced down at the rope and held it up. “I was hoping to create a piece of art tonight. You want to be my canvas?”

She swallowed. She wanted to be his canvas more than she wanted her next breath. She wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity. “I’d like that.” Though she’d always been at least peripherally attracted to him when they’d both lived in Miami, she’d never scened with him. For over a year, she’d been with Rowen, and after that Colin had had a girlfriend too. She wondered what happened to the woman. It seemed unlikely he was still with her. Rayne tried to remember her name. Sarah. Right.

He reached out with his free hand, and she set hers in his. And then he hauled her closer. She could feel his heat when she found herself inches from his body. His hand roamed up her arm and then higher until he cupped her face. “It occurs to me that even though we’ve known each other a long time, we’ve never scened together.”

She nodded. “True. I was with Rowen when I met you, and then you had a girlfriend after that. Sarah, right?”

“Yes. We broke up after you moved to Denver.” His words were soft, as was his touch on her cheek. He met her gaze. “How much experience do you have with rope bondage?”

“A little. Not much.” To be honest, it had always intrigued her, but she hadn’t ever met someone she trusted to thoroughly tie her up. She’d seen Colin in action, though. She knew he was an amazing rigger. The sight of the rope in his hands made her pussy clench.

Colin threaded his fingers in her hair and ran them through the length. “So silky,” he commented softly. “I’ve always wondered what it might feel like.”

He had? Yikes.

“Do you have a hairband? I don’t want it to get caught in my knots.”

She fought the urge to tip her face into his hand when it returned to her cheek, his thumb stroking casually across her jaw. Instead, she lifted her gaze to meet his as she tucked two fingers into the tight front pocket of her jean skirt and extracted a band.

Unsure if he intended for her to pull her hair back or if he wanted to do it himself, she fingered the band for a moment. Finally, he released her face, gently extracted the hairband from her palm, and turned her to face away from him.

As if he were a hairdresser who played with women’s locks every day, he expertly gathered her length at the base of her neck and then threaded it through the band. After a few passes, he trapped the ends and then doubled it again, forming a bun.

The entire time he had his hands in her hair, her body came more fully alive.
Becca Jameson. Mastering Rayne (Kindle Locations 384-421). Becca Jameson Publishing. Kindle Edition.

What was intended to be a one night thing becomes a bit more as Colin reiterates his concern for her lack of self-defense knowledge and fitness.

This book is sizzling and has all kinds of secrets coming out. More with London’s abusive husband and one twist after another had me turning the pages long after my bedtime.

I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

ARC Review of Deadly Truths – Kiss Her Goodbye Book 3 by Rebecca Royce

Deadly Truths
Kiss Her Goodbye Book 3
By
Rebecca Royce

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

I’m Everly Marrs.

Eighteen months ago the Letters took me to force my father’s hand and turned my world upside down. A few months after that, a man named Ben took me from them and I went through hell before I saw them again and they turned my heart inside out. In fast moments I’ll never get over, I killed my father and walked away from everything–the Alliance, the Letters, my heart.

Before D, W, T, K and J, I had plans. I was going to help people. After, I barely recognize myself, but I went through the motions, and I finished school. I had a job that paid under the table. I avoided electronic monitoring and I knew how to take care of myself. I was going off the grid. I was going to be safe and disappear.

Then one of my Letters walked into a bar…it sounds like a joke yet its anything but funny. Once again, I’m plunged back into their world, only they aren’t taking me this time. No one is.

No, this time I know what it means to be Everly Marrs and what happens next is going to happen my way.

Everly has resigned herself to the fact she needs to stay off the grid. She has finished her degree but still hasn’t decided where to go or when. She figures she’ll know when she needs to leave.

Warden aka W is the one who shows up at the bar where she is working. Up to this point the letters have stayed away, respecting her wishes. But Warden is hurt and needs more help than she can give him.

As she makes her decision, she runs into Derrick aka D and he offers his help to get Warden to Judson aka J. Aside from the pretty elaborate gifts these two have given her Everly needs something else, a promise from them. A promise she will need from all of them should this move forward.

This is a favorite scene.

I stared at both of them for a long moment. “If we’re going to do this, if we’re going to proceed like there is any chance I could be with both of you, then I can’t have it that you two would ever consider hurting one another.” I held up my hand before they could answer me. “That was a deal breaker for me before when I didn’t know there were deals to be made. I recognize there are things I can’t have any control over. Like men threatening me on the street and death plots, but I won’t compromise on that. If you’re on my side, you’re on my side. And that means you never—and I mean never—even consider hurting the other one.”

Warden swallowed. “As I told you before, I’ll tell you again: I never had those intentions. I can’t speak for Derrick.”

Derrick nodded. “I can do that. I don’t often offer loyalty. But I will give it to Warden if that means I get to share you with him. I’m not going anywhere, Everly. Even if you kick me out, I’m hanging around to protect you. I’d rather be on the inside.”

I rose. The plane was relatively smooth in the sky, and I didn’t know what made me act the way I did. Instinct, maybe. I walked to Warden. He’d been the first to answer me. I bent over, placing my mouth close to his. So close I could see the pulse in his neck, hear his soft breathing, and practically taste his lips against my own.

“Promise me you’ll never betray Derrick or any of the others if we find our way back to each other. Promise me.
Rebecca Royce. Deadly Truths (Kindle Locations 460-471). Kindle Edition.

Everly has to face some truths about herself and the guys. However the twists in this book had me cursing up a blue streak.

Intrigue, a surprise I didn’t see coming and so much more had me turning the pages.

Don’t miss this stunning conclusion to the Kiss Her Goodbye Series!
