ARC Review of Deadly Truths – Kiss Her Goodbye Book 3 by Rebecca Royce

Deadly Truths
Kiss Her Goodbye Book 3
Rebecca Royce

I’m Everly Marrs.

Eighteen months ago the Letters took me to force my father’s hand and turned my world upside down. A few months after that, a man named Ben took me from them and I went through hell before I saw them again and they turned my heart inside out. In fast moments I’ll never get over, I killed my father and walked away from everything–the Alliance, the Letters, my heart.

Before D, W, T, K and J, I had plans. I was going to help people. After, I barely recognize myself, but I went through the motions, and I finished school. I had a job that paid under the table. I avoided electronic monitoring and I knew how to take care of myself. I was going off the grid. I was going to be safe and disappear.

Then one of my Letters walked into a bar…it sounds like a joke yet its anything but funny. Once again, I’m plunged back into their world, only they aren’t taking me this time. No one is.

No, this time I know what it means to be Everly Marrs and what happens next is going to happen my way.

Everly has resigned herself to the fact she needs to stay off the grid. She has finished her degree but still hasn’t decided where to go or when. She figures she’ll know when she needs to leave.

Warden aka W is the one who shows up at the bar where she is working. Up to this point the letters have stayed away, respecting her wishes. But Warden is hurt and needs more help than she can give him.

As she makes her decision, she runs into Derrick aka D and he offers his help to get Warden to Judson aka J. Aside from the pretty elaborate gifts these two have given her Everly needs something else, a promise from them. A promise she will need from all of them should this move forward.

This is a favorite scene.

I stared at both of them for a long moment. “If we’re going to do this, if we’re going to proceed like there is any chance I could be with both of you, then I can’t have it that you two would ever consider hurting one another.” I held up my hand before they could answer me. “That was a deal breaker for me before when I didn’t know there were deals to be made. I recognize there are things I can’t have any control over. Like men threatening me on the street and death plots, but I won’t compromise on that. If you’re on my side, you’re on my side. And that means you never—and I mean never—even consider hurting the other one.”

Warden swallowed. “As I told you before, I’ll tell you again: I never had those intentions. I can’t speak for Derrick.”

Derrick nodded. “I can do that. I don’t often offer loyalty. But I will give it to Warden if that means I get to share you with him. I’m not going anywhere, Everly. Even if you kick me out, I’m hanging around to protect you. I’d rather be on the inside.”

I rose. The plane was relatively smooth in the sky, and I didn’t know what made me act the way I did. Instinct, maybe. I walked to Warden. He’d been the first to answer me. I bent over, placing my mouth close to his. So close I could see the pulse in his neck, hear his soft breathing, and practically taste his lips against my own.

“Promise me you’ll never betray Derrick or any of the others if we find our way back to each other. Promise me.
Rebecca Royce. Deadly Truths (Kindle Locations 460-471). Kindle Edition.

Everly has to face some truths about herself and the guys. However the twists in this book had me cursing up a blue streak.

Intrigue, a surprise I didn’t see coming and so much more had me turning the pages.

Don’t miss this stunning conclusion to the Kiss Her Goodbye Series!

As a teenager, I would hide in my room to read my favorite romance novels when I was supposed to be doing my homework. I hope, these days, that my parents think it was worth it.

I am the mother of three adorable boys and I am fortunate to be married to my best friend. I live in Austin Texas where I am determined to eat all the barbecue in town.

I am in love with science fiction, fantasy, and the paranormal and try to use all of these elements in my writing. I’ve been told I’m a little bloodthirsty so I hope that when you read my work you’ll enjoy the action packed ride that always ends in romance. I love to write series because I love to see characters develop over time and it always makes me happy to see my favorite characters make guest appearances in other books.

In my world anything is possible, anything can happen, and you should suspect that it will.

I’d love to hear from you!

Her Passionate Hero – Black Dawn Book 3 by Caitlyn O’Leary

Her Passionate Hero
Black Dawn Book 3
USA Today Bestselling Author
Caitlyn O’Leary

Aliana Novak spent most of her school years being bullied. Her only refuge, was Hunter Diaz, until the day he graduated and left her to deal with the tormentors herself. But that was then, this is now. Those horrific experiences molded her into what she is today and made her the perfect candidate for Vice Principal of one of the toughest, schools in East LA. Sometimes the harder you fall, the stronger you rise. Aliana always rose to the challenge until one the most notorious gangs in East LA had her in their sights.

Hunter Diaz, scraped and fought his way out of the gangs of East LA, to serve honorably as a SEAL in the United States Navy. He has become one of the most dangerous men on the planet. When his adopted grandmother tells him an old friend is in trouble back home, he returns to the place he vowed to leave firmly in the past.

Hunter expects to find the same awkward and fragile girl he once knew. Instead, he finds a beautiful strong woman who is closed off from everything but the children under her care. Even when her life is on the line she is determined to handle things on her own. What had happened to Aliana? Can Hunter break down her walls and prove to her he is still her knight in shining armor before she ends up dead?

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

Aliana is in trouble, not of her making. In her years since Hunter left she has devoted herself to helping the kids targeted by gangs. In her role as Vice Principal she doesn’t tolerate the shenanigans of the members of gangs and expels them without second thought and encourages those who have the potential to escape the neighborhood and the gangs. One young man, Nicholas, has such promise and he is embracing the opportunities he sees for himself. It’s Nicholas that is the root of attacks on her, she thinks she can handle it all, but her grandmother has other ideas.

Hunter has just returned from a mission, when his grandmother calls him and orders him home. It was so out of character for her, it leaves Hunter stunned even as he demands to know the reason. For Aliana he would do anything and that she was in danger motivated him more than anything to head home.

This is a favorite scene as he confronts her about the attacks.

“I’ve got to finish, Babička is waiting for us.”

“She can wait a little longer. Tell me who the people were who didn’t mention your grandmother. Somebody threatened your mother?”

She shook her head, refusing to look at him.

“Cariña, you’ve got to tell me.”

She pulled away from him and her gaze swung wildly around the kitchen. “I can fix this. I can fix this.” She mutters.

“No you can’t, not without my help.”

“Dammit, Hunter. I told you to go away. You listened before why not this time?” She looked at him beseechingly.

“Because now I’m thirty-one, not a dumb nineteen-year-old who had my teeth kicked in by the girl who meant everything to him. This time we’re going to resolve this shit. You’re going to let me help, and you’re going to tell me why you sent me away all those years ago.”

“Please, leave, I’m begging you. It’s what’s best.” More tears spilled. She looked wildly around the kitchen. He followed her glance. Her eyes spied the knife. For a second he thought she was going to grab it, but then she turned to face him.

“Best for who? It’s sure as hell not best for me.”

“Then me. Leave so I can still feel good about myself.” She stared past him at the counter. “When I told you to go away before, I was relieving you of a responsibility that would just make you have a crap life.” Her head swung so she could glare at him. “But it got even worse Hunter, far worse. You were so lucky you got away from the crazy girl when you did.”

“What in the world are you talking about. Mamie can’t sing your praises enough. Your grandmother adores you. You’re a Vice Principal, for God’s sake.”

“Are you going to go?” she asked, her voice a hoarse whisper.

He gently placed his hands on her shoulders, not in a million years did he want to cause her physical pain on her bruises.

“Nothing is going to drag me away.”
O’Leary, Caitlyn. Her Passionate Hero (Black Dawn Book 3) (pp. 83-84). Passionately Kind Publishing. Kindle Edition.

We learn of Hunter’s past and as other SEALs he’s asked show up to help protect her and her family he also realizes how much danger she’s in.

Aliana is stubborn as is her grandmother and Hunter’s grandmother too. The grandmother’s book club provides not only information but also lots of giggles in an otherwise tense situation.

A page turning read with plenty of action, some tears, some giggles and a romance that was meant to be.

Naughton – Butler Ranch Book 3 By Heather Slade

Butler Ranch Book 3
Heather Slade

A loner by choice and chance, Naughton Butler has no social skills. That works for him, because the secret he holds means he can’t let anyone close enough to need them. But when he and his brother are left four-hundred acres of prime vineyard land, he has to muster up enough civility to interview an assistant winery manager for the new facility.

His brother and business partner recommends Bradley St. John for the job. Naughton agrees to interview him, but when Bradley arrives for the interview in high heels and a short skirt, Naughton thinks his brother’s playing a joke. The pretty, young woman had the right degrees, and might be good for working in a tasting room, but did she have the experience to run a winery?

In shock, Naughton insults Bradley in the worst way, and she walks out, saving him the trouble of kicking her out. But he can’t get her off of his mind, and feels guilty for being rude, which was a first. He goes to find her to apologize, but when he gets to her uncle’s ranch, he realizes the joke is on him.

Not only was Bradley St. John born into winemaking like he was, it was obvious as he followed her through the vineyard, she knew what she was doing.

Hiring her would solve an immediate problem for both him and his brother, but Naughton had a feeling having her around would create an even bigger problem. He found himself fiercely attracted to her, which was something else that hadn’t happened in a long time.

He didn’t need a distraction, and would make it clear to his brother it was up to him to keep her away from him. The question was, how far away would be far enough?

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

I am really loving this series, there is so much suspense and intrigue. For a dead man Kade seems to be everywhere and in everyone’s business.

Now that Naughton and Maddox have two vineyards, they are hiring a wine maker, even though the one at Demetria won’t be yielding fruit for a while yet. Of course Naughton does manage to mess things up in a most amusing way, at least for the reader.

This is a favorite scene.

Maddox had warned her that Naughton could be abrasive. He hadn’t warned her, however, that he was an arrogant, sexist asshole.

Bradley was used to people being surprised by her name but not having someone insist she was lying about it.

“What are you doing back so soon?” her uncle asked.

“Naughton Butler is a…jerk.” There were about a hundred other things she could call him, but her Aunt Jean and Uncle Charlie had always been good to her. She wouldn’t disrespect them just because Naughton was pond scum.

Her uncle laughed. “You got that right.”

“What happened, honey?” her aunt asked.

“He asked where I was hiding my boyfriend.”

“What an odd thing for him to ask.”

“He refused to believe I was Bradley Saint John. Evidently, the last thing he expected was a woman applying for a job as winery manager.”

Her uncle was chuckling and pointing to the road. “Here comes Maddox now, and it doesn’t look like he’s alone.”

“I’ll be inside.”

That was all it took—her Aunt Jean saying her name in that way that reminded Bradley of her mom. “Okay,” she murmured and stayed where she was.

Naughton was the first to get out of the truck. He nodded at her aunt and uncle, and approached her, holding out his hand. Instead of shaking it, Bradley folded her arms in front of her.

“Why are you here?” she asked.

“Evidently, I owe you an apology,” he said, quietly enough that only she could hear him.

Bradley took a step back.

Naughton was a little too heart-stoppingly good-looking to be standing so close to her. “Nice apology. Wait, you didn’t actually apologize, did you?” she smirked.

“I’m sorry, Bradley,” he whispered, taking another step forward.

God, his voice. It wasn’t just his rockin’ hard body, but his gravelly voice was sexier than all get-out too.

“Forgive me?”

Bradley hadn’t moved, but Naughton had. The step forward he took brought him close enough that she could smell the vineyard on him. She breathed in and instinctively closed her eyes. The vines had a certain smell that lingered on the clothes of someone who spent their day in them. It was like the smell of a campfire to those who loved to camp.

“Bradley, I asked you a question.”

It came out almost like a growl, but a damn sexy one.

“Yeah,” she muttered. Why had the fight she had in her only moments ago abandoned her?

“Can we begin again?”

She nodded, still unable to find her voice.

“Good. How about we walk?”

Instead of turning around, Naughton went forward, and Bradley followed.

“Mad says you’re the new rock star.”

“Is that what he said?”

“No, but I thought you might take it the wrong way if I told you he said you were gonna be the hottest new winemaker on the Central Coast.”

Bradley smiled. At least he was trying to be nice, however misguided his attempt might be. “I give credit for whatever I know to my uncle.”

“Where’d you go to school?”

Naughton raised his eyebrows.

“My father lives on the East Coast.”

He nodded. “And your mother?”

“My mother passed away when I was twelve.”

“I see. I’m sorry I asked.”

“Jean is my mom’s sister.”

“Why’d she name you Bradley?”

Interesting that Naughton asked why her mother had named her Bradley, instead of her father or both her parents.

“It was her maiden name.”

“No brothers?”

“No siblings.”

“I like it.”

“What? My name?”

They walked in silence through her uncle’s vineyards, the ones she’d walked every summer of her life since she was five years old.

“What do you think of Butler Ranch wines?”

“They’re good…”

“But not as good as your uncle’s.”
Slade, Heather. Butler Ranch Box Set: Books 1–3 . Sparrow Publishing. Kindle Locations (7053-7088). Kindle Edition.

Now there is an immediate attraction between these two, but Bradley has a boyfriend. Guy Deveux III aka Trey also has a family in the business and is quite full of himself. He also seems to know Rory Calder, not a good recommendation in my opinion.

Lots of action in this one starting with a fire and progressing into other problems with wineries in area of the Butler Ranch. More on Kade’s many secrets, and plenty of sizzle with Naughton and Bradley. I can’t seem to read these books fast enough.

Her Devoted Hero – Black Dawn Book 2 By Caitlyn O’Leary

Her Devoted Hero
Black Dawn Book 2
USA Today Bestselling Author
Caitlyn O’Leary

Navy SEAL Dex Evans has a problem. His buddies think it’s a riot when they sign him up for a dating service behind his back. But who would have thought that with a profile like SailorBoy69 he’d snag a woman who was hysterically funny and gorgeous. Too bad she was also skittish as all hell. Dex fears that when she finds out his profile was a set-up, his happily ever after could sink to the bottom of the ocean.

Single mother, Kenna Wright was in way over her head. She’d spent years putting her child first while ignoring her needs. So what was she thinking responding to the flirtatious email? Luckily for her, when she is stuck on a project with Dex, he’s even better in person than he’d been on his online profile. But can she believe this sexy SEAL when he says he’s looking for more than a fling?

When one of her co-workers is murdered and it looks like Kenna might be the next one in the killer’s crosshairs, Dex is determined to keep her safe. But with a target on her back, it’s really hard to keep a shield over her heart.

……. Hello SailorBoy69,
SNMP stands for So Not Mary Poppins. Take it to heart. My photo is me, but it’s pretty much a fake, since it took me two hours and twenty dollars worth of product to achieve the look. If we were to meet in person, I probably wouldn’t look anywhere close to this, so soak in this picture. Actually, don’t worry, we won’t meet, but I’ll get to that.
Here’s me in a nutshell. I live in the good part of town because I work my ass off handling my full-time job as a nurse, plus a part-time gig, that’s so my son can go to school in a decent school district. Being a good mother is the most important thing in my life, so I have no earthly idea why I’m responding to your profile since I don’t have time to date. Did I mention I have a kid, two jobs and really don’t look like this?
I like the fact that you’re serving our country. That’s part of the reason I’m reaching out to you. But the real reason I’m writing, is that I’m ninety-nine point nine percent sure you won’t respond, so this is a safe letter to write. I can feel good that I’ve finally put myself out there, without enduring the humiliation of a first date, which I’ll fail at, because I’ll never in a million years figure out how to reach this level of pretty again.

But in all seriousness, I wanted to take aim for a good guy, and you’re it. I like the fact you’re in the Navy. I like the fact, that you work with disenfranchised kids. I think you’re a nice man. Hell, I don’t even care if that’s not your real picture, because responsible men do it for me. Of course in my world they’re like mythical unicorns, they just don’t exist, at least not for me. But the dream of a responsible man makes my panties damp. See I can say this safely, cause you’re not going to respond, and I’m never going to meet you.

So, that’s my story SailorBoy69. Just know that out there in this big bad world a woman thinks you’re pretty exceptional, except for the atrocious cyber name you’ve given yourself of course. Now, if you have a thought of responding, for God’s sake don’t. Remember, it’s me. I have a kid, two jobs, and I’ll look like crap, and you’ll ruin the fantasy.
― Signed, So Not Mary Poppins

One of the things I love about Caitlyn’s Series is how they intertwine. In this one Clint from Midnight Delta Team has played quite the prank on Dex of Black Dawn.

Signed up for a dating site with emails sent to a couple hundred women, Dex is ready to strangle Clint as he responds explaining how it’s all a misunderstanding due to a hack. That is until the last one, SNMP intrigued him and made him laugh, he had to respond to her.

Kenna only signed up on the site to satisfy friends that she’s getting out there. She wasn’t quite sure why she responded to SailorBoy69, there was just something about him.

These two are a hoot, after a couple of emails she decides to stop the foolishness and deletes her profile. However, not before Dex has collected what information he can.

Her employer Rosalie has other ideas since her grandson owns the site. She decides to throw these two together in a project for her. Then the fun really begins.

This is a favorite scene.

“I’m not going to Rosalie’s. I’m meeting up with some people. Your grandmother will be here any minute.”

“She’s coming pretty early, isn’t she?” Austin asked.

“I have to leave early. Somebody’s going to pick me up.”

The doorbell rang. They looked at one another.

“That must be your ride. Gram has a key,” Austin stated the obvious.

Dammit. She’d texted Dex to wait at the curb, and she’d come out to him. She didn’t want him to meet Austin. There were going to be too many questions.

She looked at her cell phone. Nope, no text from Dex, just another call from an unidentified caller. Couldn’t Dex have texted to let her know he was coming to the door? This did not bode well if he couldn’t follow one simple request.

Her son left to answer the door and she took another look in the mirror. Not too bad. Not as good as her profile pic, but not too bad. She swiped on another layer of lip gloss and hurried down the stairs.

Double damn. Her mother was at the bottom of the stairs beaming up at her. Dex was standing beside her, with a wide smile.

“Look who I found on your door step. You didn’t tell me you were meeting a handsome man for breakfast.” Penny Hartford said.

“I’m not,” Kenna told her mother.

Dex let out a laugh. Austin and Penny joined him.

“Smooth Mom.” Austin spoke at the same time her mother.

“Maybe you need your eyes checked, Kenna Leigh. He’s handsome.”

Kenna flushed. “We’re not having breakfast,” she mumbled.

“Dex, I’d like you to meet my son Austin, and my mother, Penny. Family, meet the handsome man, Dex Evans. We are not having breakfast. We are going to visit homeless shelters today. It’s a new assignment for Rosalie.”

“Actually, I was hoping we could pick up coffee and a scone. I told Reverend Langley we’d be there at nine,” Dex smiled.

Austin gave her a sideways smirk. What was up with that? Shouldn’t he be all upset that a strange man was trying to have coffee with her? She understood her mother’s glee, but her son’s?

“Dex, I thought I asked you to wait in the car for me this morning,” she said pointedly.

“My grandfather would hand me my ass if I didn’t go to a lady’s door.”

“You were raised right.” Penny nodded firmly. “Did your grandfather raise you?”

“He had a large hand in it. I came out to San Diego most summers to spend them with my grandparents,” Dex explained.

There was a story there.

“I can tell I like him,” Penny said.

“Are you here to watch Austin while Kenna and I go do our thing?”

“Yep, that’s my thing on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Let’s me catch up with the light of my life. But today is a little more interesting.”

“No. No it isn’t. It is just one of Rosalie’s projects. Nothing interesting at all,” Kenna said quickly.

The last thing she needed was her mother getting ideas.

“As a matter of fact, this is a big project that will take months. Rosalie has taken Kenna off all of her other duties to focus on this. I’ll be spending pretty much all of my free time coordinating with her. I’m really looking forward to it.”

“In that case, you should come to dinner, shouldn’t he Austin? I always cook on Saturdays since Kenna has to work.”

Come on Baby Boy, do Mama a solid and say no.

Austin looked at her, then looked at Dex, then looked back at her. “Sounds good, Gram.” He had a shit-eating grin on his face.

“Austin, I forgot to talk to you about some chores you need to get done today. Can you come with me?”

Kenna jerked her head towards the kitchen. He trailed her into the other room. “What are you thinking?” she demanded. She had to stare up at him because he was three inches taller than her, but he was still her little boy.

“I’m thinking this is a way for Gram and I to see if he is make-up worthy.”
O’Leary, Caitlyn. Her Devoted HERO (Black Dawn Book 2) (pp. 73-76). Passionately Kind Publishing. Kindle Edition.

Of course you realize things can’t go smoothly, and things start happening quickly from here.

Dex and Kenna have much to learn about each other, it’s a slow but steady build up to some really intense heat.

A murder, threats and so much more as this relationship develops. We see a lot more of Clint and his team as well as things get more intense.  Enough hold your breath suspense that I couldn’t put this book down.

Maddox – Butler Ranch Book 2 By Heather Slade

Butler Ranch Book 2
Heather Slader

The Hatfields and McCoys have nothing on the Butler and Avilla families. The feud between the families has been going on for decades and doesn’t look like it will end anytime soon. But neither the feud, nor the fence between the wineries can keep two determined young lovers apart. Will their love heal the wounds of the past to reunite the families? Or will it drive the wedge deeper and make them choose family over love?

Barnes and Noble logo_150 ibooks-logo-150x150KoboLogogoogle_play_logo_002_002

Maddox and Alex have been together for what seems like forever. The one thing neither of them has admitted to is that they are in love.

This book provides that journey while combining the mystery of Kade’s bequests, a bond problem and a few other interesting issues.

Alex’s brothers run Los Caballero’s her family’s winery. Gabe makes the wine, Enzo handles the business and Trev the sales. Now Enzo feels he needs to leave, Gabe is holding everything in and Rory Calder, the new owner of Tablas Creek is stirring up trouble.

Maddox finds out he and Naughton have inherited most of the Hess Estate and vineyard. How Kade managed that is yet another puzzle.

Alex decides to break things off with Maddox to try to find ‘more’.

This is a favorite scene.

“I realized that I’d never love you the way you needed me to.” Those were the words Kade wrote. Was that why Alex ended things with him a couple of hours short of twenty-four hours ago? Was it because Maddox could never love her the way she needed him to?

But who could love her better? Who knew Alex the way he did? No one could come close to understanding understanding her the way he did. It wasn’t just sexual either.

He understood that when Alex felt uncomfortable, she’d fly rather than fight. For years he’d let her. He didn’t force her to fight for him, or for them, but there was never a time when Alex decided to come back, that he didn’t open the door and invite her in.

Other women weren’t one night stands, because he was never with them all night. He didn’t bring them to his house. Only Alex came to his house; only Alex slept with him. He might sleep with a woman more than once, have dinner or drinks, but he never brought them around his family. If they wanted more, he’d tell them the truth. He didn’t.

What would Kade have said this morning if it had been him Maddox saw in Harmony? Would he tell him to get his ass back to Alex’s and tell her how he really felt? Would he tell him to admit that he thought he might love her? Or like he had with Peyton, would he tell Maddox to let her go so she could finally find someone who could love her better?

The thought of it destroyed him.

The idea that he’d never hold her in his arms again made him ache. Maybe he wasn’t as good a man as his older brother. Maybe he couldn’t do the right thing by her and let her go, because he needed her. Had he ever told her that? How could he have when he’d just realized it himself?

He picked up his phone, thinking at first that his battery was dead. When he powered it on, it was fully charged. He didn’t remember turning it off, but he must have. He’d missed a call from Gabe Avila and another from Brodie. Both had also sent texts, asking that he call as soon as he got their message. He doubted they meant three in the morning.

There was nothing from Alex, but he knew there wouldn’t be.

For twenty years, they’d been playing a game. Thinking she was pregnant would have meant the end of the game, but it also would’ve meant the beginning of a life. Not just the baby’s life, their life together. That’s what he wanted, and there was only one way to find out whether something permanent would work between them.

Maybe he should start telling her how he felt, but in a way Alex could handle. He sent her a text.

If you ever wake up and think no one needs you, you’re wrong. I need you, Al.
Slade, Heather. Butler Ranch Box Set: Books 1–3. Sparrow Publishing. Kindle Locations (5127-5147). Kindle Edition.

So much happens in this book, the heartbreak, the emotions, the things that are revealed about Kade, the winery gossip.

Of all of that I loved Maddox and Alex most of all, they have too much to throw it all away.

Breaking Without You – Fractured Connections Book 1 by Carrie Ann Ryan

Breaking Without You
Fractured Connections Book 1
NY Times & USA Today Bestselling Author
Carrie Ann Ryan

From NYT bestselling author Carrie Ann Ryan, comes a brand new series where second chances don’t come often, and overcoming an unexpected loss means breaking everything you knew.

I fell for Cameron Connolly at the wrong time. And when he left, I thought my life was over. But then, after the worst happened, I truly understood what that phrase meant. Now, he’s not ready for a second chance, and I’m not offering one. Though given that our families have been forced together after losing one of our own, I know there’s no turning back. Not this time. Not again. Not when it comes to Cameron.

I never wanted to hurt Violet Knight, but there were reasons I had to leave all those years ago—not that she’d believe me if I told her what they were. I not only left her, I also left my foster brothers. Honestly, I didn’t want to come back to Denver to help run my father’s failing brewery. But when it comes to my brothers, I know I’ll find a way to make it work. Perhaps I’ll even earn Violet’s forgiveness and face the connection we both thought long forgotten in the process. Because I wanted her then, but now I know I need her. I just hope she needs me.

There is a lot of emotional pain in this book, starting with the suicide of Violet’s best-friend Allison but it also extends to the loss of Jack, Cameron’s adoptive father and the bar Jack left to him and his brothers.

For Violet, losing her best-friend has not only triggered her migraines but also a grief so intense it borders on depression. Her sister Siena and other friend Harmony are also feeling the loss but not to the same degree. Harmony has been through this kind of grief before when she lost her husband unexpectedly.

Cameron and his brothers have inherited a bar that has been operating in the red for far too long. Brendan the oldest is the money man, business is his thing and he will start coming up with ideas to make this venture successful. Aiden is a Michelin Chef, he plans on adding unique items to the menu to attract new clientele. Cameron is Aiden’s twin and has been away in more than one way for a long time. He walked away from Violet and his brothers when his birth mother called. Eleven year old Dillon, their younger brother, whom they had known nothing about was part of why he stayed away. For the brothers bringing the bar back to life will be a tribute to their adoptive parents, Jack and Rose and hopefully Dillon will be a part of this and their family.

A very long road for everyone, as this story progresses. Concentrating mostly on Violet, who is the most affected by everything. Her relationship with Cameron resumes but they are different people now and we get to join them on this journey.

Plenty of laughter, lots of tears, some sizzle and hope for the future.

I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

5 Contented Purrs for Carrie Ann!

That was my friends, we were always there for each other. Even if not all of us were here anymore.

The headache was coming on strong, and my hands had started to shake. I knew I needed to leave soon. The others would understand if I left, even if I had been the one to say that I needed to stay. Because I knew that I wouldn’t be able to drive home soon if I didn’t go now. So, I went over to the coats, slid mine on, and ignored more of the whispers as people tried to catch my eye. They wanted to talk to the girl who had found Allison.

I knew that much. But I had talked to the police, I had discussed things with Allison’s parents. I had shared with my friends. I had talked to everybody about what I had seen, detailing it so much that I knew I could probably say the words by rote without even showing a single emotion.
Maybe that was for the best.

Because I didn’t want to feel anything.

Didn’t know if I really could.

So, as I turned away from the whispers and the knowing looks, I told myself that I needed to go home. Of course, just as I thought that, I slammed into a large chest.

A hard, familiar chest.

Of course.

“Violet,” Cameron whispered, his voice rough, that low, deep growl that I remembered vividly.

“I—” I couldn’t finish the sentence.

Because as soon as he wrapped his arms around me, the dam broke. Tears slid from my eyes, and I let out a low groan that I knew others might hear. Cameron surely did.

In response, he let out a low curse that vibrated through my body and held me close. And I broke.

The others might not be able to see me, but Cameron could. And, of all the people I could have broken in front of, of all the individuals that could have held me when I shattered into a thousand pieces, it just had to be him.

He was the one who was there for me when I fractured.

Of course, he was.

Healing Home – Healing Hands, Healing Hearts Book 1 by J.M. Madden

Healing Home
Healing Hands, Healing Hearts Book 1
NY Times & USA Today Bestselling Author
J.M. Madden

BB Jones has a very nice life, if it’s a little lonely. When her sister calls her to take a job in a pinch, she’s not enthused. She doesn’t need the money and the job itself seems a little dirty- greet a Navy SEAL home, pamper him for three days, then leave. The fact that the man has no one else to welcome him home sways her to take the job.

Lincoln Bezel is greeted on the tarmac with one of the nicest hugs he’s ever gotten by one of the most beautiful women he’s ever seen. The fact that she’s there for him stuns him, and intrigues him. He agrees to the three day pampering, but within a few hours he knows it’s going to be hard, no, impossible, to let her go. When he’s deployed before the contract is complete, he believes his little stretch of paradise is over.

Because why would she come back? There was no way she could have fallen in love with him in two days. Right?

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this new series but I am totally hooked. Clearly a series about a company based on helping our military and veterans outside of what the government can or will do is a winner.

In this first book, the wives of a team returning from deployment, decide that the one single guy deserves a welcome like the rest of them get. They hire Caroline’s company to provide a homecoming for Lincoln, consisting of meeting him at the airport, followed by three days of home-cooking and companionship.

This is a favorite scene.

To that end, he paused long enough to retie one of his boots. As he walked down the ramp, the heat of the California coast hit him, and he drew it in. California had a very different scent from the middle eastern countries. More lush with flowering plant aromas drifting on the breeze.

He glanced up. All of his buddies had made it to their families. Mary was leaning over Justin’s gurney. The guy had roused and was lifting a hand to cup her cheek and wipe away tears. Ryan’s fiancé was leaning over his hands, looking at the white bandages like she could see the injury beneath. Swamp Man’s kids were tangled around his legs, demanding attention, but he was kissing his wife. Toro stood on the tarmac rocking his woman in his arms, whispering into her ear. All of his guys had found their pairs.

Then a woman he didn’t recognize swept forward. She had light, curly brown hair in a knot on top of her head, and stylish purple-framed glasses on the bridge of her nose. Pale green eyes alight with humor focused on him. Her mouth was spread in a brilliant smile as she walked toward him, the skirt of a blue dress swirling round her. Craziest of all she carried a glittering, hand-made sign that said, ‘Welcome, home, Lincoln’.

Link stopped in his tracks. For a split second he wondered when they’d gotten another teammate with the same name, and he looked around, but he knew that wasn’t right. The woman was looking right at him. He continued to stare as she walked forward, closing the distance between them.

God, she was beautiful in a nerdy, cute way, and he couldn’t stop staring. Her smile spread even more, as if she knew he were poleaxed. “Lincoln, my name is BB. Welcome home.”

Then she did the most amazing thing of all. Dropping the sign to the tarmac she stepped forward, wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him into the best hug he’d ever been given.

Emotion suddenly clutched at his throat and he just stood there for a long moment, not sure what to do. This was such a surreal moment. Then the comfort she was offering began to edge in. What the hell. Dropping his gear, he wrapped his arms around her. He had no idea who this woman was, or where he’d met her before. Surely he’d remember such a stunning woman? Wait, she’d introduced herself. They’d never met before.

Her breasts were pushing at his chest and even through the vest and gear he wore, he could feel every inch of her. She wasn’t very big. His arms wrapped around her easily. But she was strong. The arms around his neck were not letting him go until she was ready.

Link basked in the welcome, everything else fading away. For a moment he could imagine coming home to this every time. This was how it should be. This was how he’d seen his teammates welcomed time after time as he walked through the hangar alone, his chest aching.

* * *

BB had read somewhere that a twenty-second hug was enough to release oxytocin, but she thought the hug needed to be between committed partners. As she absorbed the feel of Lincoln Bezel in her arms, she also felt something settling into her heart.

Contentment. As she breathed, she drew in the masculine, dusty scent of him and it did something to her, making her want to nestle in longer. She had thought the hug would be awkward if he brushed her off or pulled away, but it wasn’t. His arms were strong around her back, and he returned the same amount of pressure she used, which was perfect.

Finally, though, she could feel people watching them. She drew back enough to look into his face, and was shocked at how handsome he was. It was hard to believe that this guy didn’t have a significant other.

There was confusion in his expression, but also a strong sense of interest.

“Do I know you?” he asked finally. His voice was deep and raspy.

She shook her head. “No, you don’t. But I’m here to welcome you home. Your friends and family hired me to welcome you back to the states.”

Link looked up. Half a dozen of his men and their wives were looking at him and grinning.

“What did you assholes do?” he asked, laughing.

Toro’s wife Brittany made a motion to the group. “We thought it would be nice to have someone welcome you home the way you deserve to be. No, it’s not long-term, but we wanted to do something nice for your birthday. Mary set it up, but she’s busy, obviously.” Brittany motioned to where Black was being loaded into a transport, his wife at his side. “You have BB for three days, then she heads back home. This contract does not entail sexual services of any kind. We are obligated to make that clear to you.” She grinned and winked, and he had to wonder if she was telling the truth or not.

He glanced at BB, but her smile stayed in place. This woman was not any kind of hooker, he would bet his life on that. She was too… refined, he supposed the word would be. Pale pink polish made her nails look slick, and her clothes seemed to be well made. He wasn’t up on current trends, but she seemed to be very well put together. Expensive. Out of his league.

So why would she be doing this?

“I acknowledge that no sexual services are inferred in any way,” he told Brittany, but his eyes stayed on BB. And he caught the slight burst of color in her cheeks.

Damn. If she did offer those services, he didn’t think he’d be able to turn her down.

A weird noise drew his gaze down and BB shifted until he could see a barrel-shaped dog hiding in her shadow. He thought she was a bulldog until her batwing ears popped up. “Is that a Frenchie?”

BB smiled and nodded. “Lincoln Bezel, this is Fancy French Vanilla. Frankie, for short.”

Now this contract is very specific, and doesn’t include anything salacious.

BB is a cartoonist, and her sister Carolina runs Healing Hands, Healing Hearts. She accepted this job because her sister was overwhelmed with requests and needed a hand with this one. She really didn’t expect to be so attracted to Linc.

Linc found himself enjoying BB’s company and when he had to leave he found himself wishing she would be there when he returned.

I laughed, cried, held my breath and I think I even crossed my fingers as this couple begin a relationship. Very emotional, yet perfectly blended with just enough heat.
