In the game of espionage,
trust is the ultimate weapon.

In the aftermath of a botched mission, Gretta, once a dedicated MI6 agent, finds herself cast out and blamed for the failure that claimed the life of an undercover colleague. Feeling betrayed by her sister Blair, who remained loyal to MI6’s brass, Gretta seeks solace in the quiet expanse of West Yellowstone. But when Gretta receives a cryptic message from her sister, she’s not only thrust back into the world of espionage, but she’s also forced to turn to her current boyfriend and the Brotherhood Protectors for help.

Corbin River is coming to terms with an injury that ended his military career, the only thing in life he’s ever wanted. The last thing he needs is a woman in his life, but Gretta isn’t someone he can give up easily. She’s intelligent, sexy and totally unexpected. She’s also keeping a secret and Corbin knows it. When her past collides with his world, he’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe because that’s what he was trained to do. And because it’s what his heart tells him he must do.

As Gretta and Corbin dive deeper, they uncover a sinister plot orchestrated by corrupt officials within MI6, with a terrorist organization at its core. Determined to clear her name and protect her sister, they must navigate a perilous journey to thwart the impending attack, all while facing the ghosts of her past and the betrayal that tore her family apart.

Corbin Rivers has just started with the Brotherhood Protectors in Yellowstone. His Team will be Eagle, while he has passed the testing there are some stipulations since he is still experiencing pain. He’s a sniper, weapons expert and watcher who was once Delta Force, but he also scored really high in cyber related things. Those he avoided in the Army, but it looks like he won’t be able to here. He’s been assigned to Wyatt since their scores are very similar, but Wyatt isn’t a sniper. It’s their first official team meeting and we meet Walker Pierce a helicopter pilot and Corbin’s best friend, and Colton Henderson. Ty Quigley, and Knox Preston round out the team.

It’s noted that Corbin has been seen with Gretta Hughes the local gun shop and range owner and gun ‘nut’ with an impressive collection. She’s not easy to get to know, and Corbin finds himself more often than not sharing his River family stories especially the ones involving his grandmother The Weezer.

Things change when Gretta gets a text from her sister, we know what she’s hiding but Corbin and the Brotherhood Protectors don’t know all of it. Gretta is concerned about her sister’s safety and asks Corbin to see if they can find where she is and what she’s working on. They are meeting with Wyatt, but Darius is the only one with the skills and Stone’s approval would be needed.

In the meantime, she gets a second text from her sister, this one has her even more concerned.

This is a favorite scene.

“If I share something with you, are you willing to keep it from Wyatt for the time being?” She dug out her cell from her bag and tapped the screen.

“That depends on what it is.” Corbin cocked his head. “Honestly, Gretta, I don’t understand the secrecy. If you want help, you need to tell us what and why we’re doing it.”

She handed Corbin her phone. “I got this second text from my sister a little bit ago. Truthfully, I didn’t expect to hear from her for a few days. The fact this came so quickly is nerve-racking to say the least.”

“I was walking down Baker Street, near that old cinema Mom used to take us to. The one where we saw The Third Man. Remember that? The fog here that day was so thick, I could barely see across the street. Almost made me feel as if I walked right into the movie. As if the shadows from the script were lurking around the street corner. Anyway, I’ll be in touch in a couple of days. As soon as things calm down at work. Looking forward to taking a trip down memory lane. In the meantime, let’s stay out of the spotlight,” Corbin said. “Break this down for me.”

The Third Man refers to an op that went bad. The fog and shadows refer to the idea that she feels like there are eyes on her because of it. She doesn’t want me to reach out to her, but she does want to talk.”

“I take it she wants you to lay low until then,” Corbin said.

Gretta nodded.

“Then why do you want Wyatt to go digging?” Corbin asked. “It seems to me you’re being a bit premature, especially considering what Blair does for a living.”

“If I had been speaking to my sister on a regular basis, I’d agree. But since we haven’t spoken since I moved here, outside of me telling her where I was, I’m worried she’s in trouble. She could be hiding out. Or on her way here if things are really bad. She’s the only one from my past life who knows where I am outside of my immediate boss and the director, so she might see this as a safe place to land. I want to be prepared for anything.” She sucked in a deep breath. “Or maybe this isn’t even her, which is frightening for different reasons.”

“Agreed, but let’s go on the idea it’s Blair. How involved were you in her last op?” Corbin asked with a disapproving glare. “You told me your case interfered with hers, but I’m getting the feeling that it’s something entirely different.”

Fuck. She tugged at her pant leg. Thank God Wyatt wasn’t in the room. But she still didn’t like being cornered by her boyfriend.

Boyfriend.

When the hell had she let this man worm his way into her world. Into her heart. The intention had never been to care. It started off as a good time. A roll in the hay. She thought she’d be able to walk away, but he was like a drug. From the first dose, she’d been hooked and she wanted more.

Hell, she wanted the whole bottle and she wasn’t willing to share it with a single soul.

“Is Wyatt going to help me or not?” she asked.

“Whatever secrets you have, they are safe with the Brotherhood Protectors— and with me,” Corbin said in a low, calming voice. “I’ve already learned one.” He leaned forward, lifting a folder off the coffee table. “Wyatt has no problem calling in a few favors and quietly asking around about where your sister is. That’s the easy part. But to find out more, he has to have Darius do some wizardry with his hacking skills and that puts us, Blair, and possibly you at risk.” Corbin tapped his fingers on the folder. “This is your background check. It’s not a deep dive. Only gives the basics. Tell me what we’d find if Wyatt went probing around in your past.”

She closed her eyes for a moment and took in a deep breath. She blinked. “Before I do that, I want to know what you did learn.”

“You served in the British Army.” He cocked a brow.

“It surprises me that you know that. My government doesn’t give that up easily. However, given the Brotherhood Protectors’ reach, I shouldn’t be.”

“Unfortunately.” Corbin flipped open the folder, pulling out a sheet of paper. “When they looked into you, it flagged your sister, who also comes up as a private investigator, but we both know that’s not true, which leads me to believe that you weren’t either.”

She jumped to her feet. Her lungs deflated and when she tried sucking in a breath, she thought she might suffocate. “I don’t like being ambushed.”

“That’s not what’s happening here.”

“Oh, really? What happens when Wyatt joins us? Are the two of you going to start playing good cop-bad cop? Mom and Dad? Am I going to be sent to my room without any dessert?”

Corbin laughed.

“It’s not fucking funny.” She rubbed the back of her neck. “All I asked you to do was get a read on my sister. That’s one of the things you guys do. I thought you could do me a solid as your…” She waved her hand over the file. “Instead, I get a background check tossed in my face.”

He raked a hand across the top of his head. “For the record, I’m not tossing anything in your face. But you lied to me and that lie ended up putting me in a hell of an awkward position with my boss, which in turn puts him between a rock and a hard place. We want to help you, but if we do, we need a little honesty. It’s not too much to ask.”

One thing she’d learned working for MI6 was not to give up more than requested when fishing for intel. It was a walk on a tightrope. Too much, she’d fall to her death. Not enough, same outcome. “All right. What do you want to know?”

“How long were you in the British Army?”

“Four years.”

“Says here you were sixteen when you joined,” Corbin said. “And that both you and your sister went right into being private investigators.” He arched a brow. “But that’s not what Blair did, is it? Which begs the question, is your background the product of MI6 making your employment with them go away?”

“Is that a question or an accusation?”

He stood and meandered across the room. “Did you join MI6 with your sister?”

“How many times did you lie about being in Delta Force?”

“Dozens and before you go asking me if also lied to anyone I shared a bed with, of course I did. But I never slept with anyone in the military. Or a cop. Or someone who was remotely in a similar position, except once. But when I asked her to do me a favor, she knew exactly who I was and what I did for a living.”

“This is different.”

“How?”

“Because not only did I leave London on bad terms with my sister, but this op she’s referring to essentially ended my career and our relationship. And not in a good way.” She poked Corbin in the chest. “And as I stated before, these messages might not be coming from Blair. That’s why I need to know where she is and what’s she’s doing.”

Corbin squeezed her biceps. His touch was soft, tender, and way too sweet. “Is there anything that indicates it’s not from her? Does the language feel off? The movie reference not quite right?”

“That’s just it. Everything points to it being Blair. The word choice. The movie. The imagery. All of it. But we both know phones can be cloned. Someone could be holding her hostage. There any number of scenarios and given the fact this is her first contact, my untrusting brain is going in a million different directions.”

“We’ll figure it out.” He lifted her chin with his thumb and forefinger. “But I’m going to need an answer to my question. Wyatt’s not going to be able to get Stone to agree to using our resources without it.”

“Stone? He needs to be read in too?”

“If you want Darius and Wyatt to work their special brand of magic, then Stone has to sign off.” He pursed his lips. “What’s it going to be?”

“Why do I have to actually say the words?”

“Because I need to know you can be honest with me about the things you think aren’t important, but really are.”

“Fine.” She lifted her arms, then slapped her hands against her thighs. “For twelve years I worked for MI6.”

“In what capacity?”

“Seriously?” She glared.

He nodded.

“Jesus, you’re a pain in the ass,” she muttered. “I was an agent. I worked counterterrorism.”

“And? What about the op?”

“It was my mission that went sideways,” she choked out.

He cupped her cheeks. “Was that so hard?”

“You have no idea.”

His mouth covered hers in a kiss that had no place happening in Wyatt’s office, much less on the grounds of the Brotherhood Protectors. She should push him away, but his kisses were too electrifying.

Things heat up from here in more ways than one. A third text causes much more concern and an interesting approach is found to get Gretta’s sister to call, and so much more that is at stake.

It’s fun watching Corbin and Gretta navigate their feelings for each other as they investigate the cause of Gretta’s fears.

I will be reading more of this Team. I do love the Brotherhood Protectors.

Running was the only thing she’d ever known—
and she wasn’t afraid to go straight through the storm.

In the aftermath of military service, Phoenix Snow, once adept at burying his emotions, finds himself adrift in his own life. Now pursuing a new path alongside his brothers, he finds himself at a crossroads. His journey takes an unexpected turn when fate introduces him to Janelle, a woman haunted by a harrowing past.

Janelle fled the clutches of a polygamous cult that stole her innocence and shattered her spirit. Despite the shadows of her past lurking at every turn, she presses onward, driven by the hope of a brighter future. But fate has different plans and Janelle is forced to confront her deepest fears. With her past threatening to unravel her newfound peace, she must find the courage not only to embrace love but also to confront the demons that have plagued her for years, all while safeguarding those who share her plight.

In the prologue of this book we meet Sister Aura Margaret Bueller, we learn how she was brought up and how she escapes that life.

Phoenix Snow and his brothers Nelson and Maverick own the Blue Moon bar and restaurant. It’s the dream they made a reality after leaving the military. Phoenix is enjoying sitting on the Blue Moon’s deck, three weeks ago there was three inches of snow, today April brought temps closer to sixty. A pleasant respite. Their Manager/Hostess Veronica joins him letting him know the ad for the waitress is live and the availability of his garage apartment was on the front bulletin board.

Janelle/Aura entered the Blue Moon after seeing the sign for a waitress hostess needed. Veronica seated her at a high top near the bar and then Phoenix sees her. He’s immediately attracted to her and makes his way over to greet the newcomer to the area. When Janelle orders she also asks for an application, which Phoenix happily supplies. When he asks about an address, he finds she doesn’t have a place to live yet. Seems he can solve that as well.

When Veronica has a family emergency and has to leave, Phoenix asks Janelle if she’d like to work the rest of Veronica’s shift and if the background and reference checks come through okay the job and the apartment are hers.

The background check he does is different than most since he uses his former CIA mother’s contact. It’s deeper and he finds something a bit disturbing, so he needs to discuss the hire with his brothers.

They agree with his opinion that Janelle is most likely running from an abusive situation, and they no objection to hiring her. They’ve both met her and watched her with customers, also seeing her help out by bussing tables, in addition to her hostess duties.

He gets a bit of backlash from one of the waitresses, Pam. She seems to think he was hasty in his hiring, and she also has her sights set on him personally. Something he’s got to deal with since she’s started texting him outside of work hours, which is not acceptable. He has no interest in her that way, and she has to stop asking him out and texting him. It’s all annoying and borderline stalkerish.

When we next see Janelle, she’s at her apartment thinking how lucky she is to have landed it. The view from her deck takes her breath away. She’s admiring that view when Phoenix comes home and invites her for dinner.

This is a favorite scene.

“Thanks for inviting me.” She set the bowl on the island.

The steaks were on a platter. He lifted a cookie sheet of potatoes and placed them in the oven. “I’ll be honest, I brought home two hoping you’d be around.” He took the bottle of wine and poured two glasses, handing her one.

Drinking had been against the church. It was the devil’s juice, and if you partook, you were going to hell. Since she left, she found herself enjoying a few sips here and there, but she never bought it and brought it into her home. Some habits were hard to break.

“Thank you.” She raised the glass to her lips and took a tiny sip. Her taste buds went wild. It wasn’t too sweet. Had a dry, rich flavor to it. And it went down smoothly. She took a larger sip, enjoying the way it hit her belly. “This is really good.”

“My brothers and I went to this little town in New Jersey called Candlewood Falls. There’s a winery there that we fell in love with. The River Winery. They have some great blends. We’ve gotten to know the owners because we served with one of their sons, Corbin River. Anyway, we buy it by the case now.”

“That’s nice you can support your friend’s family,” she said. “Can I help with anything?”

“Nope.” He smiled that wicked grin of his. It made his blue eyes twinkle. “The potatoes will take about forty minutes and the steaks need to rest. It will be a good twenty minutes or so before I can start grilling, so why don’t we go sit outside on the deck and enjoy this awesome evening. The temperatures have really turned. I think we’ll have an early start to summer, which will mean a busy season for Blue Moon.”

“I’ve noticed that you have a lot of regulars.”

He placed his hand on the small of her back.

Every muscle in her body tensed. She blinked, wishing she could control that knee-jerk response.

He removed his hand, pulling back the sliders, but said nothing of her reaction.

“You’re so lucky to live here,” she whispered. “I have to pinch myself that I stumbled upon this rental.”

“My mom is constantly telling us boys that everything happens for a reason, which is funny because Mom can be such a cynic.”

“Really? I’ve met your mom. She’s so positive and upbeat.” She took a seat in one of the big Adirondack chairs.

“That she is.” He laughed. “But she’s also retired CIA and has seen some shit in her day. My dad was a general in the Army and he’s pretty hardened too. So the fact that they are both so warm and fuzzy these days cracks the three of us up.”

Her heart skipped a beat. FBI, CIA, and DEA were all three letters she’d learned to loathe and mistrust. They were the organizations that wanted to separate women from their children and put men in jail.

The last part she knew needed to be done.

But the former she still didn’t agree with. They were innocents in a world that predators had created.

Quickly, she pushed those thoughts out of her mind. No one here wanted to hurt her or take her away. She’d done nothing wrong.

Except not speak up.

But as Jason had explained, she needed to save herself.

She watched how Phoenix held his wineglass by the stem, swirling the liquid before taking a sip. He was everything she wasn’t.

Sophisticated and worldly.

“Your parents had interesting jobs,” she said, trying to carry on with the conversation. “What did you do before Blue Moon?”

“My brothers and I were in the Army. Special Forces.”

Shit. She knew that. “That’s a dangerous job,” she managed.

“I can’t deny that,” he said, leaning against the railing. “I was injured on a mission that took me off active duty. I was headed for a desk job when my brothers left the military. We had always said when I hit twenty years, since I’m the youngest, we’d all open a business together. That just happened a few years before we planned.”

Fascinated by this man and his family’s history, she leaned forward. “Why did your brothers leave?”

“Nelson left because of a mission that had gone sideways, basically ruining his career. Maverick had left before him for a woman. But she turned out to be a mistake. We all came up here where Nelson found Brandi and Maverick found Hensley.” Phoenix smiled. “My parents joined us, which is nice that the whole family is now in one place.”

“What about you? Anyone special in your life?” Holy crap. Did she ask him that question? It was too personal and that was something she didn’t want to get into, but she found herself wanting to know everything about this man. It was an unwelcome sensation that she had no control over.

He chuckled. “Nope.”

“I find that hard to believe.”

“Believe it.” He took a long sip of his beverage. “I’ve never been the settling down type of guy like my brothers who have wanted marriage and kids.”

“You don’t want that?”

He shifted, turning his gaze toward the horizon. “I can’t say that I have. My folks believe it’s because of the girls I tend to date. My brothers think I’m afraid of commitment.”

“What do you believe?” She needed to stop asking questions. This wasn’t like her at all. She was the kind of woman who didn’t speak unless spoken to. That was something she carried from her past. She didn’t get close to people because she was never going to stay anywhere too long and even though she planned on staying in this place longer, she still needed to keep a safe distance.

“That’s a good question and one that I have no answer for anymore.”

He pushed from the railing and eased into the chair next to her. “For years it was because I didn’t have time. I was focused on my career in the Army. I was deployed so much it wouldn’t be fair to anyone I was with. My mom said that was an excuse because she and my dad always made it work, which is true. I had a great childhood even though my dad was gone a lot and my mom’s job was demanding as hell.”

“Can I ask you a question?”

He burst out laughing. “That’s all you’ve been doing, but sure. Go ahead.”

She took a sip of courage. “Did you join the Army because that’s what you were expected to do?”

“God, no,” he said. “My parents discouraged it to a point. They didn’t want us boys to sign up because it was the only life we knew. But I have no regrets. I loved my career. Working with my dad and brothers and even my mom on some missions. It was a great life. I’d do it all over again if given the opportunity.”

She wished she could say the same.

The only thing she would repeat was leaving.

He lifted his chair, turning it to face her. “What about you? This might be a big assumption on my part, but I take it you’re single.”

“Very much so,” she said with a nervous laugh.

“Do you want to get married someday? Have kids?”

A flash of her past filled her brain. It was one of the most painful memories of her life. At the time, she thought having a baby would give her something to connect with. Something to love. Someone to give her purpose in a world that no longer made sense.

But that baby had never cried and both her husband and father had told her that child’s death had been God’s punishment.

She swallowed. Hard. “I don’t know.”

“Nothing wrong with that.” He tapped his glass against hers. “So many people are hyper-focused on doing what they believe they’re supposed to do instead of figuring out what they really want. I’ve been envious of my brothers for knowing they’ve always wanted a family. The only thing I’ve ever always known I wanted is to be close to Maverick and Nelson. They and my parents mean everything to me. I’ve got that. But now I find myself at a crossroads. Maybe it’s my age. Maybe it’s maturity. Or maybe it’s finally being settled in one place. I have no idea. However, I do know I’m selfish. I like my space. I don’t mind living alone. I’m just starting to feel like there might be more. Like something is missing.” He shook his head. “This conversation went deep.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to pry.”

He patted her forearm. “No. It’s okay. It’s nice. I don’t normally talk about stuff like this. Not even to my brothers all that much these days, especially because they are always offering to set me up on dates and after my last couple experiences, I’m happy to sit back and let life happen on its terms.” He leaned to the side and pulled out his cell. He rolled his eyes and audibly groaned.

“What’s the… never mind. Not my business.”

“It’s about to be.” He stood. “Pam is at the door.” He waved his cell phone. “This might get awkward.”

“Why?”

“You’re about to find out.”

Their evening takes a turn when Pam shows up unannounced like she was expected. Phoenix is fuming and lets her know in no uncertain terms, she is not welcome in his home and if it doesn’t stop, he’d take further action. Janelle is very shaken by the encounter and takes her leave once Pam is gone. Phoenix is disappointed but there is nothing he can say that would make her stay. It also leaves Janelle wonder if what he said about not having a relationship with Pam is the truth.

I love the way this story unfolds, Pam is definitely an issue, and there’s so much more that happens. There are also some really interesting turns in this as Janelle and Phoenix get closer. Some of which are very dangerous.

I really can’t wait to see what’s next in this series, now that the Snow Brothers are settled.

Brotherhood Protector’s World:
Team Watchdog Book 1

Her crown hides a sinister shadow,
his past holds the shield.

Mason Quinn is the embodiment of dedication—a stalwart protector from the esteemed Brotherhood Protectors. Carrying the weight of his sister’s untimely demise, he has channeled the echoes of his past into a relentless pursuit of safety for others. His meticulous nature and unwavering vigilance make him an unyielding shield against the shadows that threaten the innocent.

Enter Isabella Carter, the effervescent owner of a thriving beauty pageant empire. With a magnetic charm and a resolute spirit, she champions the cause of women’s rights, shining as a pillar of empowerment. But even as she stands in the spotlight, advocating for change and inspiring a legion of followers, an evil presence slithers unseen in her midst.

Mason is tasked with safeguarding Isabella, whose radiant exterior belies the danger that inches ever closer. As Mason strives to protect her, he must confront the demons of his history. Together, they navigate a labyrinth of betrayal where the only way out is to face the peril head-on.

Will the shadows of Mason’s past smother the light of Isabella’s future, or will they emerge from the darkness unscathed?

The Brotherhood Protectors are opening a new division similiar to the secret service. They will be called Watchdogs and this is the first book in that series.

Their headquarters is in Fool’s Gold, Colorado and as this book opens we meet Mason Quinn, his dreams as a child were to be an NHL hockey star, the cards weren’t in his favor, and he entered the Air Force Academy instead. He became a team lead which he really doesn’t believe is his forte, yet he excels at it. His best friend Ryder grounds him and helps him put down those doubts. He had expected Cruz to be team lead here but instead they want him. The other members of his team, Asher and Kent aren’t as close to him but are an integral part of the team with their skills.

Mason and his team have a meeting with Jake Cogburn, their Boss and Hank Patterson the founder of the Brotherhood Protectors. They were supposed to have some downtime in which to check out the training facilities, but a case has come up that requires their expertise.

Mason immediately recognizes Isabella Carter, the new owner of the Pikes Peak Princess Pageant. Ryder and Cruz remember her as well. She was the reigning princess when they were at the academy, and she spoke at their homecoming. A speech that rankled because of her delivery of it more than the content of equality.

One of the things that Hank brings up is that she may not be a willing participant in the protection. Her father has hired them after a rock with a threatening note is thrown through the window of their home. Isabella is staying with them temporarily until her apartment in Colorado Springs is ready. Mason would take Cruz and Ryder, leaving Asher whose specialty is counterterrorism and Kent a medic to work behind the scenes.

We meet Isabella and her parents right before the meeting with Mason and his team. Isabella thinks her father is overreacting to the situation. However, her stepmother Leah was terrified by the note and the method of delivery. Isabella is all glitz and glamor all the time. Since she was a child she had to have the designer clothes and shoes and the makeup as well. She wouldn’t think of being seen without every part of her perfect. Hair, makeup, nails, clothes everything. She’s making changes to the pageant just as she has in the others she owns. Making it more about scholarships and individual growth rather than beauty.

Mason finds himself attracted to Isabella, she is the opposite of everything he looks for in a woman to date. He goes out with woman with similar interests to his own, outdoor activities, hiking, camping, fishing. Isabella certainly has never done any of that. Well camping once with her dad but that ended as quickly as it started. She’s also confident, intelligent, and knows what she wants to accomplish.

Mason also declares himself the one who will stick by her side. They haven’t figured out what they will tell everyone yet but that’s the plan. He will stay at the house in the guest room her father offered him instead of sitting in his car.

She has a meeting with a good friend Kennedy Sinclair with regard to a donation from the Sinclair Foundation and Mason will be going with her. She insists on driving her own vehicle until she can’t. One of her tires had been slashed and there’s no time for him to change it and have her make her appointment.

This is a favorite scene.

The only change had been her move back to Colorado Springs and her purchase of the Pikes Peak Princess Pageant. Darius had sent over numerous articles about it this morning. Some good, some not so glowing. There were a few staples in the pageant community who believed that the self-proclaimed Queen of Pageants would change the long-standing traditions of Pikes Peak. Isabella had made it clear she believed that there were some key points of the pageant that were antiquated and needed to be modernized for the sake of the future of women and equality.

But one thing had jumped out last night and it annoyed him that Isabella hadn’t thought it important to inform him of the conflict.

“Trust me, I went through two years of looking like a scrawny, pimply kid. It didn’t help that I was on the ice six days a week sweating my balls— I’m sorry. That was rude.”

“I’ve heard it all.” She turned and winked. “And I’ve said it all. Just not in public. So don’t change your verbiage for me. However, I do ask that you be on your best behavior around all the pageant contestants, the media, and their families. I do have a reputation to uphold.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He turned the old-fashioned key. This had been the last year they made this vehicle with that option. He would miss it when he did purchase a new SUV, but he would enjoy all the bells and whistles of a new car. “I need to ask you something about one of the current contestants and their family.”

“I’m listening.” She crossed her ankles.

He noticed that she never once crossed her legs at the knees. Always the ankles. For some strange reason, he found that utterly fascinating and he wanted to know why.

But that was a question for another day.

“I read that Jessica Babcock’s mom is a former beauty queen.”

“She sure is. She competed under the name Jenna Louise. She’s originally from Denver but relocated with her husband to Colorado Springs about fifteen years ago.” Isabella held her hand up. “I should never assume anything, but I suppose you want to know if I was ever friendly with Jenna.”

“I need to know every person who might have a bone to pick with you. Currently, there are two potential suspects on my list. Herb Rullo and Greta Adams. I need to know if I’m expanding that list.” He flipped his blinker and pulled out onto the street in their quiet little neighborhood. He grew up in South Buffalo where there were sidewalks and streetlights. The houses in his hood were half the size and while where his folks lived was considered a nice and safe place, it wasn’t suburbia. Not like this anyway.

“Jenna and I weren’t friends as kids, but we weren’t necessarily enemies. We co-existed on the stage. Our drama was kept out of pageants.” “Is that really possible?”

“Well, let me ask you this.” She shifted in her seat, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear. “I’ve seen a few hockey games in my day and it can be pretty violent. All that slamming into the boards. Name-calling. Gloves dropping. Fists flying. Grown men landing themselves in the penalty box and running their mouths off. And yet, I watched those same men who were sworn enemies on the ice, come out of the locker room laughing and having no problems with each other. So, were you able to leave the conflict on the ice?”

“Most of the time, yes. But you’re describing the opposite, and you haven’t explained the problem, so I can’t make a judgment call on if this Jenna person is an issue or not.” He made the right turn out of the neighborhood and headed toward the highway. It would be a twelve-minute drive to the Sinclair Foundation. He’d learned last night that Kennedy Sinclair had also competed in pageants, but her career had been short-lived.

“For the most part, Jenna and I were indifferent to each other. She’s a few years older than I am, so our paths didn’t cross that much except for in pageants like this one. We weren’t close. We didn’t travel in the same circle of friends. However, her husband Chuck and I were close. I’ve known him most of my life. His dad is good friends with mine. Chuck started dating Jenna in high school. They broke up when I was a senior. During that time, he and I started dating. That pissed Jenna off and caused some friction. But Chuck was so hung up on her and he dumped me after two months and begged her to take him back. They’ve been together ever since.”

“Did you always like him? Is there more to that story? Is she still holding a grudge?”

Isabella laughed. “No to all of the above. Jenna and Chuck are rock-solid and I honestly wasn’t heartbroken over any of it. I went out with him more to appease my dad than anything. He and Chuck’s dad always thought it would be cute if we got together, even though Chuck is like six years older. I think Chuck took me out to make Jenna jealous. We all get a good giggle out of it now.”

“So, you and Jenna are good? Friends?”

“Friends is a strong word for Jenna and me,” Isabella said. “We have nothing in common and I haven’t really seen her in years.” She waved her hand over her face and down the length of her body. “I’m all this. All about the glamour. About being a girly girl. I’m into fashion. Broadway plays. Art. Culture. Jenna, even though she has her daughter in pageants, would rather go fishing.” Isabella shivered. “That’s an activity I don’t understand.”

“Have you ever tried it?”

“God, no. Why would I? Fish stink something awful. And the bait? Gross. Not to mention the bugs. Or the potential camping aspect. Where would I plug in my hairdryer? Curling iron or straightener? How would I take a decent shower? It’s barbaric.”

“You haven’t lived if haven’t experienced camping at least once. Plus, if you haven’t gone, how do you know you won’t like it?”

She jerked her head. “You were adamant this morning about not wearing a tux. Have you ever been in one?”

“Yes.” He hit the gas, merging into traffic. “My buddy Cruz’s wedding. It was the most uncomfortable thing I’ve ever had to put on my body. And the shoes, holy shit. They sucked. I thought my feet were going to bleed worse than when I was in the Vietnam jungle for a week in the rain. I had so many blisters I thought my skin was going to rip off right to the bone.”

“Jesus, you’re a dramatic one.” She recrossed her ankles.

One of these days he was going to have to ask her about that, because it had become a burning question in his brain.

“I assume it was a rented tux, correct?”

“It was,” he said.

“Yeah. They never fit right. And their shoes aren’t quality, so I’m not surprised. You need a proper fit. Tell you what. I’ll make a deal with you because if you’re going to stay for the entire pageant, and want to be wherever I go, I will require you— or whoever on your team wants to have access to me— to be in the proper attire.”

“I’m terrified to hear your proposal.”

“It’s simple. You let me get you a proper tux and suit and I’ll let you take me fishing.”

He shifted his gaze. “And when in the hell are you going to have time to do that? I’ve seen your schedule and you’re booked right through to the morning after the winner is announced.”

She tapped her long fingernail to her temple. “You know how tomorrow I have blocked off at three through the rest of the day for spa treatments.”

“I do.”

“Well, I’m not going to a spa. That was my time to catch up on whatever I need. Or to fill in with shit that comes up. So, unless there are problems, we could go for a couple of hours. I know where there’s a few spots. My dad likes to fish.”

Mason tugged at his sport coat. The idea of wearing a monkey suit and parading around on stage with Isabella had two conflicting reactions. The first made him twitch. When he’d played hockey, for the most part it was easy to block out the people in the stands. But he never felt like he was the center of attention. If he was forced to lift his arm while Isabella placed her hand on his elbow so he could escort her across the stage— or whatever she expected him to do— that made him feel as though he’d be on display.

Not something he enjoyed.

And yet, the idea made his insides burn with passion and desire like he’d never experienced before.

Neither one of those things should be a factor in his decision. What mattered was access to the pageant and protecting Isabella and everyone else there from a threat. Cruz and Ryder could blend in backstage. Work with cameramen, stage crew. Gain access to every other place. But someone needed to be with Isabella at all times and the person who was picked for that job had been Mason. He was team leader.

Fuck. “I’ll wear the monkey suit, but you’re going fishing.” He poked her thigh. “I won’t let you get out of it.”

“If I’m anything at all, I’m a woman of my word.” She rubbed her palms together. “Oh, we are going shopping this afternoon and it’s going to be so much fun. You have quite the model’s body. You’re going to look fantastic.”

“I know you think that’s a compliment, but I’m not taking it that way,” he mumbled. He’d rather be called a Neanderthal.
Jen Talty. Masons Watch – Jen Talty (Kindle Locations 876-942). Kindle Edition.

Isabella has him posing as her boyfriend, which when everything is said and done isn’t a hardship for Mason. He’s trying so very hard not to fall for her.

Isabella decks Mason out in appropriate clothing to have her on his arm and he takes a lot of ribbing from the guys. However, he finds the clothing comfortable and well fitting.

There are more questions that come up as this story unfolds, Andrew, the head of the security company hired for the pageant is someone with a grudge against Mason and he makes waves over changes Mason makes. Then everything starts pointing to people she doesn’t want to believe could threaten her like this.

Plenty of suspense, intrigue, romance Mason style, laughter and kindle melting sizzle.

I will be reading more of this multi author series.

Maverick Snow, an ex-military man with a history as deep as his silence, finds solace behind the bar of Blue Moon, a haven he owns with his brothers in the serene Lake George. Known for his quiet strength and watchful demeanor, Maverick has traded combat tactics for serving drinks and has made the bar a local landmark. He had everything he thought he wanted—then she walked into the bar, and his whole world changed.

Hensley Patterson’s latest case is intensely personal. The investigation takes a dramatic turn when Hensley uncovers a link between Lara’s disappearance and Maverick’s bar.

Maverick finds himself entangled in Hensley’s quest as it becomes clear that the stakes are higher than they imagined. Together, they embark on a dangerous journey to unravel a network of lies and corruption, risking everything to expose the truth, threatening to set off a chain reaction that could consume the town and everyone in it.

This book opens with Maverick Snow standing on their dock on Lake George. He’s gazing at the stars and reflecting on the things that brought him here. He’s also thinking about Hendley Patterson, a woman he can’t seem to get out of his mind since they met.

Behind him The Blue Moon bar he owns with his brothers is packed with revelers enjoying the end of summer celebration they’ve made an annual event. His brother Phoenix joins him, and he shares he received an unusual phone call. His ex-wife was coming to town for a new job and wanted to meet up for dinner or a drink. While he’s definitely over her, he does feel he owes her an apology for some of the things he said in anger.

Almost as if his thoughts conjured her, their server Veronica tells them Hendley wants to speak with them, but she also needs someone to help her with an unruly patron at the bar. Phoenix goes to handle the man at the bar leaving Maverick to talk to Hendley.

Hendley was once a top professional tennis player and when an injury took her out of the game, she spent some time teaching. Now she’s a private detective who’s always armed, dresses in designer clothes and yet is a bit rough around the edges.

Hendley wants to put up flyers regarding a missing person. The problem is it’s not official. Her good friend was on her way here for some R&R and no one was to know she was here. They were supposed to meet two hours ago and never showed and calls to her go direct to voicemail.

Lara Benson is a popular country singer and was born here in Lake George. Hendley and her were best friends since they were the different ones. Lara the singer and Hendley the tennis player. The text she sent Hendley showed she was worried about something that could hurt not only the town but her personally.

Maverick suggests a different course of action and they set some things in motion.

The next day they start at Lara’s father’s home. He isn’t there, so they start thinking about where he could be. Hendley shares she never thought it a good idea to stay with her father, but Lara wanted to be close to him. Back at the Blue Moon they discuss where Hendley was going next while she grabs a breakfast sandwich. This leads to Maverick escorting her to her car and a single scorching kiss which his parents witness and later tease him about.

They get a text from her bodyguard/boyfriend, that he’s on his way to Lake George and wants to meet up. This meeting would shed light on at least part of the reason why Lara might disappear.

This is a favorite scene.

Hensley strolled through the crowd like she was parting the Red Sea. Her long hair bounced across her shoulders. Her hips swayed back and forth in a rhythmic dance.

A tall, burly man with a long beard and short dark hair followed two paces behind. He sported a serious, grim expression.

Without thinking, Maverick squeezed her forearm and kissed her cheek. “I took the liberty of ordering a pitcher of beer.”

“I could use a drink.” She eased into one of the chairs. “This is Brent, Lara’s bodyguard and close friend.”

Maverick stretched out his arm.

Brent took his hand and nearly crushed it as he looked him up and down with a scrutinizing gaze. “Military?”

“Ex-Army. Delta Force,” Maverick said.

“Marine.” Brent’s face eased but didn’t relax.

Maverick had learned from his own background check of Brent that he’d had an exemplary military record. He’d been awarded two medals for his service. His last mission, however, had gone sideways. Brent had been injured, forcing him out of the military and into civilian life way too early. From there, he struggled, as many do. But not so much that he ever landed himself in trouble.

From what Maverick had gathered, Brent was a stand-up guy.

“Hensley tells me this is your bar.” Brent rested his massive arms on the table.

“Mine and my two brothers.”

“Did they serve as well?” Brent asked.

“Same as me.” Maverick nodded.

Brent held his gaze. “I mean no disrespect, but I’m not having this conversation with you, no matter how impressive you are. I don’t know you.” He turned. “Hensley, we need to talk in private.”

Hensley reached across the table and took Maverick’s hand, lacing her fingers through his and squeezing. “Maverick’s with me. We can trust him.”

Brent cocked his head.

Maverick stared at Hensley, wondering what the hell kind of game she was playing and why he was allowing it to continue.

“What does that mean?” Brent asked.

“I don’t think I need to spell that out,” Hensley said with an arched brow. “When was the last time you spoke with Lara?”

Brent let out a long breath. “We spoke on the phone an hour after she left for here. She was supposed to call me as soon as she got to her dad’s. That never happened.”

“Have you spoken to Ted?” Maverick asked.

“I’ve tried calling him, but he doesn’t answer,” Brent said. “I went to his place before I came here. He wasn’t there.”

“We haven’t been able to locate him either,” Hensley said. “How much did Lara tell you about why she was coming?”

“More than you, I suspect. But not enough to explain why she’d go dark.” Brent tugged at his beard. “I told Beth that by five today, I’m filing the missing person report with or without her blessing.”

“What is it that you know that we don’t?” Maverick asked.

“Ted called her a week ago. He was babbling on about some land development deal. Lara wasn’t really listening at first. She kept holding out the phone and rolling her eyes, thinking it was just another one of her dad’s schemes. But when Ted called a second time, he mentioned something about some hundred-year-old land lease that this developer has been sitting on and how they plan on invoking the rights, destroying the local business that some guy believes he now owns the property of.”

“Do you know where this land is?” Maverick asked.

“No idea.” Brent shook his head. “I don’t even know if it’s legal. The only thing I know for sure is that for the first time in years, Ted and Lara were on the same page. That this would be bad for everyone living in Lake George.”

The table grew silent for a moment while Veronica poured a round of beer, leaving a half-full pitcher on the center of the table. She scurried away as fast as she came in.

“Are you implying that Ted wasn’t looking for money to invest in this land scheme?” Hensley raised her glass and sipped.

“I only heard part of the conversation, but it didn’t sound like Ted was happy about this land deal, whatever it was. I also don’t think he knows the details, only that he was trying to get the specifics from an old friend.”

“Any idea who that was?” Hensley asked.

“I wish I did.” Brent chugged his beer. “Lara told me not to stress over it. That she was going to check in with her dad and then meet with Hensley. That was the last I heard from her.”

“If I had to guess, Ted would reach out to George Rice,” Hensley said. “He works commercial real estate and is one of the few people who’s still friendly with Ted.”

“We worked with George when we bought Blue Moon. He’s a stand-up guy.” Maverick had enjoyed working with George. He’d made the purchase of the restaurant simple and relatively painless. “I’ll send him a text asking if we can stop by later today.”

“Have you told any of this to Beth?” Hensley asked.

“Not yet. I wanted to meet with you first before I did that,” Brent said.

Maverick rolled everything around in his brain. He was at a serious disadvantage because he didn’t understand the family dynamics. However, there was one thing he was pretty sure neither Brent nor Hensley knew, and he wasn’t sure this was the moment to share that knowledge. He needed to know he could truly trust Brent.

And he needed to have a chat with his brothers.

He first texted George.

Then he shot off a message to both his brothers about the land lease that had been found. George had researched it, making sure it had been clear. That there was no way in hell anyone could come back and claim the lease.

“Reporting Lara missing would cause chaos,” Maverick said. “What if we started with Ted? We could do that today.”

“That might be smart to start with.” Brent nodded. “But I don’t want to wait too long. I know better than anyone how private Lara is. We’ve kept so much of our relationship under wraps—”

“Relationship?” Hensley leaned forward. “That’s a strong word and one she’s never used with me.”

“Because no matter how close the two of you are and how much she trusts you, shit leaks to the press. Besides, until this past year, it’s been exactly what everyone thought. Good fun. Now it’s more and it’s no one’s business but ours. Not to mention, her fans will judge the fuck out of her for being in love with a crusty old Marine like me. I’m not the kind of person they see her being with.”

Maverick chuckled. “I see nothing wrong with you, man.”

“I appreciate the support.” Brent tapped his glass on the side of Maverick’s. “But I take it you don’t know my Lara.”

“Oh, I know who she is. I listen to her music. And I totally understand why you’d say her fans might drop their jaws, but there have been odder couples.”

Brent cocked his head. “This coming from a guy who, outside of his swagger, I wouldn’t have been able to tell was ex-Army, much less Delta Force, which is impressive.”

“Wonderful. A pissing contest. Just what I wanted.” Hensley sighed.

“That’s not what we’re doing.” Brent patted her shoulder. “We’re simply feeling each other out. You know me. I don’t trust easily and you tossed me into a situation where I need to put faith into the hands of a man I know nothing about.”

“What do you want to know?” Maverick leaned back. Unlike Nelson, Maverick’s life was an open book. Well, it was when it came to his military career. He could also learn a lot about Brent based on the questions he asked.
Jen Talty. Blue Moon – Jen Talty (Kindle Locations 826-889). Kindle Edition.

All this leads to more questions without answers and still no clues as to Lara’s whereabouts although we learn much about her relationship with her bodyguard Brent.

The relationship between Maverick and Hendley’s progresses slowly but surely as this tale unfolds.

This book has plenty of intrigue and suspense as well as romance, sizzle and surprises.

Darius’ Promise – Brotherhood Protectors Colorado: Team Raptor Book 1 by Jen Talty

Darius’ Promise
Brotherhood Protectors Colorado: Team Raptor Book 1
By
USA Today Bestselling Author

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Captain Darius Ford has done his best to put the past where it belongs. He and his team have a new gig with the Brotherhood Protectors, and starting over never looked so good. That is until the woman who has haunted his dreams comes waltzing into his office as if she wasn’t the reason his military career ended.

Special Agent Fenmore Harley has never for a second believed that Darius was a liar. However, she knew someone set up him and his team, and she was determined to find out who, even if that meant facing the man who couldn’t forgive her for things she had no control over. She’d do whatever it took to ensure his less-than-honorable discharge was overturned if that was the last thing she did.

Which very well might happen when the bullets come flying.

After a mission goes totally FUBAR, Darius and his team were arrested, and less than honorably discharged. Now they work for the Brotherhood Protectors in Colorado.

Fenmore Harley has arrived in Fool’s Gold, Jake is concerned about Darius’ possible relationship with her, believing she should have recused herself from the review board after that disastrous mission. Darius isn’t concerned feeling that it was a very short-lived relationship.

Fenmore meets with Darius and explains she wants to find a reason to reopen their case. She doesn’t agree with the way the review board handled the situation and believes they should have gotten at least a general discharge but believes it truly should have been honorable discharges.

The thing Darius finds most disturbing is that she wants to use Wally’s daughter Harlow to unearth the truth of what happened on that mission.

Harlow finds something but she won’t send it electronically, that means they have to go to her, but Fenmore’s boss can’t know she’s anywhere near home.

This is a favorite scene.

“I think she found something.” Fenmore raced through the front door of Darius’ home. It had been three days since she’d seen him at the casino, although he texted or called every day. She couldn’t decide if she found that annoying or endearing.

Either way, if the communication, she’d find herself with an emptiness she wouldn’t know how to handle.

She yanked out her tablet. Her pulse thumped in her throat, making it hard to swallow. Shaking out of her winter coat, she tossed it over the back of a stool. “I need you to connect this thing up to a secure line. Harlow is going to be calling in…” She glanced at her wrist. “Ten minutes.”

“Relax. It will take me three.” He opened a drawer, pulled out some wires, and tapped his fingers across the screen. “I’m reading the message; it’s pretty vague for you to be this excited.”

“She’s being safe.” Fenmore went straight for the bar and found a bottle of bourbon. She poured two glasses and brought him one.

He arched a brow.

“It will be a celebratory drink.” She settled onto a stool and did her best to wait patiently while he hooked up the tablet to a secure line.

Fenmore tapped her fingers against the counter.

“That makes me fucking crazy,” Darius said.

“Sorry.” She dropped her fingers to her lap and picked at her nails. She didn’t know what nervous habit was worse.

Playing with her hair.

Or destroying her nails.

“Okay. We’re all set.” He sauntered across the island and took her hand, kissing the back side.

His lips were hot and sent a warm shiver through her bloodstream.

“You need to settle your nerves.” He took her chin with his thumb and forefinger. “And I’ve got just the thing to help with that.” He pressed his mouth against hers, slipping his tongue inside.

A deep, guttural groan filled her throat. She gripped his shoulders, losing herself in the familiarity of his kiss. It was hot and wild, yet it subdued her mind and tamed her heart.

He lifted her off the stool. Her feet dangled in the air as his strong arms held her tight to his chest. He set her down, slowing the kiss and breaking contact.

She blinked.

He smiled.

“Damn you,” she whispered.

He ran his thumb across her lower lip and sighed. “I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you. I can’t sleep. I can’t eat. I’m driving my men crazy. They all think I’m a beast. We need to do something about this, because I can tell the same thing is going on with you.”

“You’re still an arrogant asshole.”

He kissed her again. It was slow, tender, and with the intent of a lover. “I won’t deny that I can have a huge ego, but tell me I’m wrong while looking me in the eye, and I’ll walk away.”

If she lied, he’d know it and she’d be constantly fighting off her attraction. Dealing with it front and center made the most sense.

The tablet rang.

She jumped.

The situation with Darius would have to wait.

“Put it on speaker,” he said.

Tapping the button, she positioned herself back on the stool and leaned forward. “Hey, Harlow. How are you?”

“I’ve only got a few minutes,” Harlow said. “I found an encrypted file on my father’s personal files. On his personal computer. It only caught my attention because it had the name Raptor on it.”

“That’s Darius’ team’s name for JSOC.”

“I know, but I can’t open it. I tried every password my father has, which is weird, because he’s a creature of habit and every time he changes one, whether it be work related or personal, he always made sure I knew about the update.”

“Every password? Including his code into his computer and cell?”

“Everything,” Harlow said. “After I was wounded, it freaked him out and he worried if anything ever happened to him and I couldn’t access his things, it would be a real shit show.”

That made sense, sort of.

“But the other weird thing is, it was buried in one empty file after another. I almost missed it.”

Darius scribbled on a piece of paper. Sounds like he was hiding it.

“Maybe he didn’t want it to be found.”

“Now, why would my father do that?” Harlow’s words were harsh. “When it comes to classified information, he’s a real stickler. He’d never put work files on his personal computer. None of us would do something like that. It’s why I find it so strange. I managed to copy the file, but I’m not comfortable sending it to you. You’re going to have to come get it.”

“You know I’m in Florida.”

“Then jump on a plane,” Harlow said.

“I can’t have anyone know I’m back in town.” Fenmore rolled her neck. “We’ll have to meet in a place no one would recognize either one of us.”

“I’ll text you a location once you tell me a date,” Harlow said. “I’ve got to run.” The line went dead.

“How long of a drive is it to DC?” Fenmore let out a long breath.

“The Brotherhood Protectors have access to planes. I’ll check with my boss to see if we can get one.” Darius snagged his cell and tapped on the screen. “If I get approval, I’m sure we can leave in the morning.”

“I really need to come in under the radar. My boss can’t know.”

“I’ll make sure of it.” Darius pushed aside all the electronics and palmed her face. He ran his thumb across her cheek. He stared deep into her eyes. His gaze bored into her soul.

A Little Bit Whiskey – Candlewood Falls: The River Winery Book 6 by Jen Talty

A Little Bit Whiskey
Candlewood Falls: The River Winery
By
USA Today Bestselling Author
Jen Talty

1cf2a-addtogoodreads

Pinot Noir River spent his entire adult life trying to avoid the drama his family always managed to get caught up in. The secrets, half-truths, and downright lies nearly destroyed his parents, his siblings, and the family winery. Everyone is back working at The River Winery for the first time in years, and things are going smoothly. Hell, he’s even getting along with all his brothers and sisters. Everything is perfect. That is until a deadly discovery is unearthed in the vineyards, bringing an unwanted investigation and a sexy investigator who thinks he and the rest of his family know more than they are letting on.

Tamsyn Tuttle is no stranger to the River family, Pinot Noir, or their secrets, including the one involving her mother’s disappearance. Rumors had surfaced about an affair between her mother and Carter. A vicious verbal fight between Weezer and Tamsyn’s mother the day before she vanished has haunted Tamsyn for years. Now that her mother’s remains have been found, and on the River property, Tamsyn will stop at nothing to find the answers.

Her only problem is that she will have to break the heart of the only man she’s ever loved.

Tamsyn has mostly avoided all of the River’s children the only one who got under her skin was Noir. He was the one who always supported her in school when the rumors got out of hand. Every year and this one would probably be no exception, rumors as to who her father was and where her mother had disappeared to would surface. The big difference now is that her and Noir have a relationship, one he wants to make public. Tamsyn isn’t sure about that, her stepparents don’t like the River family at all, and aren’t very discreet about that fact.

Noir and Tamsyn have just woken up, Noir had missed family wide texts, and he has a letter from his twin Nebbiolo that he will get to share with his family before Merlot and Talbot’s wedding.

This is a favorite scene.

Noir had been the best thing that had happened to her in years. It had been unexpected. Every time they got together, she worried it would be the last. And yet, she was the one who couldn’t take the next step. The only person who knew about them had been Nebbiolo, and he wouldn’t tell anyone because that man barely spoke. He was quieter than Noir, and that was hard to do.

Was she really worried about the rumor mill?

Or what Anna was going to say about her dating Noir River?

She shivered.

Anna and Fred had raised her from the age of ten, when her mother had disappeared. Anna had her own brand of distaste for the River family and she had made it clear that Tamsyn was to keep her distance. That hadn’t been easy to do. She’d been drawn to Noir at an early age, but their quiet friendship remained on the fringe. Their conversations through middle and high school were kept private through messaging apps or hidden under the football stands. They didn’t speak often. It was only out of necessity when the rumors reared their ugly heads. Or when the kids were unusually mean.

But no matter what, Noir had always been there for her when she needed a friend the most. He never judged her or made her feel that her need for answers was crazy.

“Fuck it.” Tamsyn tossed back the comforter and reached for a towel. She wrapped it around her body and raced down the hallway, pushing open the bathroom door, but Noir wasn’t in there. “Noir? Where are you?”

“In the kitchen,” he said.

“Is Nebbiolo out there?”

“Nope.”

Securing the towel, she inched into the small galley kitchen.

Noir leaned against the sink holding a piece of paper. “You’re not going to believe this one.”

“What’s going on?”

“My fucking twin ran off with the dog trainer lady.” Noir lifted his gaze. “They got married yesterday. Nebbiolo says they will be back in time for Merlot’s wedding.” He raked a hand through his hair. “I can’t believe he did this without at least me.”

“Weezer is going to fucking kill him and then maybe June, although I kind of like her and you have to admit, she’s good for your twin.”

“Good for him or not, getting married before my folks even officially met her isn’t smart.”

Tamsyn’s memories of her mother were few and far between, but one had stuck to her brain like superglue. She couldn’t shake it if she tried and right now, it played through her mind like a bad horror movie.

She and her mom had gone to town after supper for some ice cream, and Weezer had stopped them in the middle of the sidewalk. Her mother had her sit on the park bench a few feet away, but Tamsyn had heard and seen the fight.

Stay away from my husband and my family. You’ve caused enough damage. We all know the truth and you perpetuating the lie is hurting the people I love the most in this world. Stop it, or you will live to regret it.

Weezer’s words reached deep into her soul to this day. They wrapped around her heart, sucking the life out of her slowly, making it hard to breathe.

Her mom disappeared two days later.

Noir crumpled the paper and tossed it in the trash. “He expects me to tell my folks in case he’s late. I can’t believe that asshole. He knows how my mom gets when she’s left out of big things in her kids’ lives, not to mention, she’ll take it out on me. Blame me for letting him run off and get married to a woman he’s only known for a few weeks. And to someone she hasn’t even met yet. This is going to suck.”

“If ever there was a time for me not to come to a family event, this would be it.” Tamsyn ran her fingers across Noir’s shoulder. “But I’ll go. For you. As moral support. As your girlfriend,” she whispered, nearly choking on the last word. Caring for Noir came easy. He was kind, considerate, and put up with all her rules. Being his official girlfriend would be hard as hell, though.

Carter had never taken to the streets with the proof. He didn’t feel the need. He’d told her that if she wanted to, that was her call. He’d back her decision no matter what. So would his wife and the rest of the family. The only reason she hadn’t was it would open up a whole lot of speculation and gossip that she didn’t want to hear.

“That wasn’t very enthusiastic.” He chuckled, wrapping his arm around her body. “What changed your mind? This letter or me?”

“You,” she said. “What Nebbiolo did has nothing to do with it. That should make me run for the hills.”

“Merlot’s going to rip him a new one if he doesn’t show. He and Talbot have waited a lifetime to be together. They deserve to have the whole family together for this.”

“You two have never really gotten along great with him. Why is that?” The River family dynamics had been difficult to understand, and she’d tried. While her friendship with Noir over the years had been mostly one-sided, dealing with her issues, she did occasionally listen to his problems. However, because she’d never been close to any of them, all she had to go on was rumors, unearthed secrets, observation, and her cop instinct.

Those four things were incredibly contradicting.

The rumors and unearthed secrets made the River family look like a bunch of criminals and liars. But as each rumor was debunked, and each secret revealed, it turned out the Rivers were victims of circumstance, something she could relate to.

Her observations and cop instincts told her that they were just another dysfunctional family that loved each other and would do anything to protect their own. That deep down, they were good people with good intentions, but had a wacky matriarch that often did things ass-backward, which didn’t make her look good and often affected her children and husband negatively.

“Nebbiolo and I have always been the black sheep of the family. While everyone else wanted to be part of the family business, even when it was going to hell in a hand basket, we wanted nothing to do with it.”

“But you’re working full-time there now,” she said.

He laughed. “Things are very different now that the truth of how we got the winery from Eliza Jane’s family is out in the open. That really affected my folks. It almost destroyed their relationship. Their business. Everything.”

“I still don’t get it. I mean, Merlot didn’t work for the family business. He was a parole officer for years before he came back.”

“That’s true, but when Malbec and Chablis quit, he felt abandoned. And my mom wouldn’t trust him without his older brother and sister. Nebbiolo and I might have been young at the time, but we saw it all, heard it all, and we wanted nothing to do with it, so we carved our own path and Merlot didn’t like it. He wanted us here to protect Zinny and help Mom. We walked away, and he felt like we took Zinny with us, leaving Mom high and dry. That’s not what happened, and we’ve since cleared the air, but sometimes Merlot has a hard time letting go of things. He likes to run the winery his way. We butt heads a lot. However, we’re working it out. This will put us back a little, and it pisses me off that my twin is leaving me holding the bag. He’s been a selfish prick lately.”

“I’m sure everyone will understand that you had nothing to do with your brother’s actions,” she said.

Noir let out a dry laugh. “You don’t know my family. They look at me and my twin as one person sometimes. Like we share the same brain. He and I have always done everything together. But these last few months, we couldn’t be further apart. My twin has been making me crazy. I don’t want to live with him anymore, especially since he got that dog.”

“The only reason he got Sasha was because he thought June was hot.” Tamsyn took a step back and opened her towel, exposing her naked body.

Noir’s eyes grew wide and a slow smile spread across his face.

“Come on. We’re going to be late if we don’t go shower,” she said.

“You don’t have to ask me twice.”

Tamsyn dropped the terrycloth and raced off down the hallway with her heart beating like a hammer in her chest. She could admit to herself that she cared deeply for Noir. Being with him— privately— had been easy. Natural. They laughed at all the same things. Their conversations weren’t clunky or awkward. The silent moments weren’t deafening. There wasn’t anything about him she didn’t like.

However, being with him in public would undoubtedly bring an earthquake that would shake this town like it had never been rocked before.

As the hour of the wedding approaches, Weezer is making plans for the Holiday Showcase in the aftermath of the fire at Silas and Claudia’s place. Anna, Tamsyn’s stepmother, interrupts with some accusations of a plot. She even goes so far as to demand Tamsyn leave with her. While Tamsyn does escort Anna to her car, she doesn’t leave. Anna brings up some vicious rumors, and Tamsyn stands up to her and discloses her relationship with Noir. Anna is can I say horrified? She definitely has issues.

The wedding goes off without a hitch, and Noir accepts the offer of the cottage on the vineyard, since Nebbiolo wants their apartment. Then things start going crazy.

A body found on the property, is identified as Elizabeth, Tamsyn’s mother. Then even more weird things start showing up.

This is an edge of your seat mystery, with the relationship between Tamsyn and Noir at the forefront. However, things seem to revolve around Weezer and Carter as well.

I love this winery and the River Family. I hope Jen will write Nebbiolo’s story. I really need to know everything about it.

Seeking forgiveness and striving for honor,
Talon Wilston must navigate
the complexities of brotherhood, love lost,
and the unexpected joys of fatherhood

Talon Wilston has spent a lifetime asking for forgiveness and trying to escape his twin brother’s shadow. His life is finally coming together. He mended his relationship with his twin and the rest of his family. However, there is one person whom he’d like to reconcile with, only she’s been giving him the cold shoulder since their breakup. When an enemy from their past lands stateside, Talon vows to show Marley he’s not the same man, except he’s not prepared for the secret Marely kept from him all these years.

Marley Cole knew someday she’d not only have to deal with the aftermath of the mission that brought her and Talon together nine years ago, but that she’d also have to tell Talon the truth about his daughter. She’d been preparing for both for years. However, she never expected she’d be forced to do them at the same time, putting the two people she loved the most in the line of fire.

The last thing Talon Winston wanted to do was to bring up the events of nine years ago. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what was happening. Marley’s company The Aegis Network has put together something that is going bite them all. The child they left behind alive is now an adult with vengeance on his mind.

Channing, Talon’s twin isn’t sure why he’s involved since he hadn’t been involved in that mission. However, as Marley explains, he could be mistaken for Talon. Channing and Makenna agree to go to a safe house with Marley’s daughter so they can go put an end to Lopez’s empire.

First Marley has something to tell Talon and she’s not sure how he’s going to react. It was the reason she went to his place that fateful day.

This is a favorite scene.

Marley Cole palmed her mug of coffee and stared at the black liquid. A thick gray line of smoke snaked up toward her face, bringing a bitter scent. It hit her nostrils, forcing her mind to sharpen and be alert.

Talon sat across the booth, fiddling with his cup. They’d been in the diner for all of ten minutes, but it felt like ten grueling hours. The thick tension between them grew stronger by the second. Their history hung over her head like a storm cloud, ready to unleash a powerful storm.

He tapped his finger on the table. He lifted his gaze and tilted his head.

God, she hated that look. He used to give it to her all the time when they’d be doing something that required patience, something that she didn’t have much of unless it was in the field.

She should have all the calmness inside because, technically, she was on the job. She needed to tell Talon about their daughter, and she wasn’t sure this was the right place, but what choice did she have? She couldn’t wait until they got to Jupiter and she couldn’t do it in the car on the way down in front of his brother and Makenna.

Last night, she’d lost her nerve. He’d been surrounded by his family and while that might give him the support he needed to deal with the revelation and keep him from losing his shit, she wanted privacy to explain her reasons.

“You called this meeting.” Talon lifted his cup and blew into it before taking a long, slow sip while holding her stare with his bright-blue eyes.

There was a time when that gaze could melt her heart into a million pieces. Tallie had her father’s eyes. Same color. Same shape. Every time she looked at Tallie, she was reminded of the only man who had captured her soul. She did her best to settle her emotions. “I need you to promise me you won’t raise your voice, slam your fist on the table, or run off.”

“When it comes to you, I can’t do that.” He leaned back and folded his arms. “For the record, the last time we saw each other, you were the one who acted like a raging lunatic.”

“That’s a stretch.”

“Really?” He tapped his forehead near the hairline. “You tossed a book at my head.”

“You behaved like a condescending asshole.”

“I’ll give you that, but you didn’t let me explain why she was there.”

Marley let out a dry laugh that sounded like a dying animal. “That woman waltzed out of your bedroom, wearing nothing but your robe and a fucking smile on her face. I don’t think that needs an explanation. I believe that message is loud and clear.”

“Stacey did that to piss you off.” Talon pushed the napkin to the side and leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. “The two of you never got along and I’ll agree she’s a manipulative wench.”

“You’ve got both of those statements right. But she was your go-to fuck buddy, and she didn’t like it when you became exclusive with me. She constantly antagonized me and enjoyed rubbing your wild sex life in my face every chance she got.”

“I won’t deny that she was a total bitch to you, but for a few months, before we broke up, she left you alone.”

“That may be true.” Marley waggled her finger. “But you went right into her open arms the second things got a little rough. You couldn’t admit that you might be in— it doesn’t matter. You went right back to your old ways without skipping a beat. When I showed up that day— which, by the way, you’re the one who told me to come to your apartment— I realized that you would have been miserable if we stayed together. It’s not in your nature to be in a committed relationship.”

“That’s the pot calling the kettle black.”

“Are you serious? I’ve always wanted to settle down. I told you from the very start that I wanted to find the right person. The perfect match. Someone who understood me and would support my career. You know how hard it is to be a woman in the military; it’s just that we were young and I wasn’t in a hurry.”

Talon chuckled. “I’m sorry. I don’t mean to laugh. I don’t actually get what that’s like for you, but yeah, I’ve seen what you’ve been through and you don’t deserve what some jerkoffs put you through. You’re the best at what you do and I’m sure you’re top-notch in this new organization.”

No matter what she and Talon fought about, his unwavering champion of her ability to hold her own in a man’s world humbled her. Not once did he ever make her feel as though she didn’t have what it took to cut it in her chosen profession. “Thank you, but it doesn’t change the fact that you slept with Stacey.”

“But I didn’t.”

The waitress approached. “Are you ready to order? Or do you need a few more minutes?” She topped off both coffees.

Thank God for small favors. Marley needed a few moments to process his declaration. “I’ll have French toast and crispy bacon.”

“I’ll do the same, but can you add some sausage, scrambled eggs, and crispy home fries.” Talon lifted both menus off the table and handed them to the server. “Thanks.”

“Coming right up.” She turned and scurried off to the next table.

Marley stirred a few ice cubes from her water into the scalding liquid. She needed something to focus on. “You honestly expect me to believe you and Stacey didn’t have sex the morning I came over.”

“I’ve got no reason to lie now.”

He had a point, but she didn’t want to admit it, much less accept it. “I know what I saw.”

“I won’t deny she was there. Or that she’d spent the night. Or even that she had come out of my master after taking a shower.” Talon let out a long, slow breath. “She wanted to get back at both of us and she thought that would do the trick, which it did.”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

Talon ran a hand down his jaw, his thumb and forefinger stopping at the tip of his chin. “I ran into her two days before I was being deployed. She was there with some new man. We exchanged bullshit pleasantries. She tossed this guy in my face as if to make me jealous. It was comical because I didn’t give a shit. I didn’t want her. I texted you from that bar, giving you my schedule, and begged you to respond.”

“Talon, this has nothing to do—”

“Let me finish.” He raised his hand. “Three days after I returned from that mission, she showed up. She was upset. She told me that guy she was dating hit her. You know that’s a hot button for me.”

“Shit,” Marley whispered. “I don’t wish that on anyone.”

“Well, it wasn’t true.” Talon sighed. “And I’m not the one who texted you back. She did, but I tried to tell you that and you didn’t believe me.”

“Would you have in my shoes?”

“Considering it was Stacey, I might have heard you out.” He rubbed his temple. “You said you married Todd six months after we broke, right? That means it would have been roughly three months from that morning.”

Her heart stuck in her throat. “I was pregnant.”

“Is that the only reason you got married?”

She nodded. If she didn’t spit it out now, she’d lose the chance. She stared him in the eye. A single tear burned her cheek. It dripped off her chin and onto the table. “But Tallie wasn’t Todd’s. She’s yours.”

While this information hits Talon hard, when he meets his daughter, she knows about him and shows him affection immediately. I truly love Tallie’s reaction to him and her Uncle Channing.

You know what they say about plans, right? Nothing ever goes the way it’s supposed to. Things get crazy from here and I couldn’t put this book down. I had to know what happens next and so will you. Talon, Marley and Tallie deserve their happily ever after.

I hope there will be more books in this series.

review-fall-cornucopia

This book opens with Weston Campbell having a meeting with his cousins Rocky and Ethan Watson. They are more or less admonishing him to behave himself. Weston has made many mistakes in his life so far, and he has paid for them. His cousins let him know that the only reason he’s getting a chance with Fallport Search and Rescue is because he’s family. Apparently, they are still judging him by the mistakes of his youth and of course his dishonorable discharge. He will be working for Zeke at On the Rocks, filling in where necessary unless he’s training or on a mission.

The first person he meets is Haven, she’s a waitress at the bar and goes over the basics for the dishwashing portion of his new job at the bar. Zeke also warns him away from her. Haven says he’s like an overprotective big brother.

Haven and Weston convince Zeke they can close up when he has to leave for a bit close to closing time. It’s then that we get a look at a threat to Haven.

This is a favorite scene.

Zeke stepped from the kitchen. “I’ll be back in an hour. The kitchen is closed. When I return, we can shut this place down.”

“We can handle it if you want to go home for the night,” Haven said. “Can’t we, Weston.”

“I’m not sure Zeke’s ready to task me with that responsibility.” Weston wiped down the bar with a little more gusto than needed.

“That would actually be helpful,” Zeke said. “It’s midnight. I doubt anyone else is coming in, so once these few cash out, you two can close up.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence.” Weston nodded.

“It’s her who gets that.” Zeke kissed Haven’s cheek. “Don’t hesitate to call me if you need anything at all.” He strolled out of the bar, glancing once over his shoulder, giving Weston quite the glare.

“Pay him no mind. He thinks every new guy who walks in here is hitting on me and he doesn’t believe most men are good enough.”

“He’s probably right.” Weston winked. “On both accounts.”

“Oh my gosh. Are you flirting?”

“Absolutely not.” Weston raised a finger. “However, you are a beautiful woman who is incredibly sweet and way too kind. You should be careful. Men in bars always get the wrong impression.”

He was right and that pissed her off for different overprotective ex-military guy who’s going to get all brotherly on my hands?”

He pointed. “I think they’d like their check.”

“Saved by the customer.” She turned and scurried off toward a table full of young ladies having a fun night out in a small town. Part of her hated this job. It reminded her of everything she’d done wrong in her short life. When Zeke had first offered it to her, she’d turned it down. The last thing she wanted to do was serve drinks to a bunch of drunk people, especially men. She’d had enough groping to last a lifetime.

While she had skills, she’d dropped out of college halfway through her third year. She’d given her life to an asshole who controlled everything she did, including continuing to send her out on escort jobs to his high-rolling friends. When she finally left, her parents had become so ashamed, they wanted nothing to do with her and still didn’t. Even two months after her return to Fallport, if they saw her walking down the street, they looked the other way.

They went as far as to blackball her, making it impossible for her to get an office job with her father’s contacts, leaving her with one prospect.

Zeke.

The good news was the damn job had given her confidence. It had shown her that she was stronger than she thought. It also gave her built-in protection. She was never alone, although it surprised her that Zeke had left tonight. That almost never happened, and while she knew nothing about Weston’s past, she’d been warned to stay away. She figured either he was a womanizing jerk or he came to Fallport broken.

She suspected it was a bit of both.

“Thank you, ladies. This is very kind and generous of you.” She took the cash and slipped it into her apron. “You have a safe night, ya hear.”

“You too, Haven,” one of the girls said. “See you next time.”

Haven returned to the bar. “Looks like that’s it,” she said. “Why don’t I take this tray back to the kitchen while you finish cleaning around the bar.” She curled her fingers around the tray and turned.

She gasped, releasing her grip. The glasses crashed to the floor. Her pulse pounded in her ears.

“Are you okay?” Weston raced around the side of the bar. “Your leg is bleeding. Don’t move.” He took the towel from over his shoulder and tapped it gently on her skin, but she paid him no mind as she stared at Bradly.

It had been two weeks since he dared to show his face, but that didn’t stop the threatening texts or messages. Every time she got one, she brought it to the police. She had an active restraining order. He wasn’t supposed to come anywhere near her, but still, the cops couldn’t do much. Bradly knew people. Every time she thought she’d rid herself of him, he waltzed right back into her life.

“I’m going to get a broom. Stay put.” Weston rose, running his hand up and down her arm. “Hey. What’s wrong? You look as if you’ve just seen a ghost.”

“No ghost,” Bradly said with a snide smile. “Just an old friend.”

“You’re not welcome here.” She took one step backward. “If Zeke catches you in his bar, all hell will break loose.”

“Zeke’s not here, and I’m not staying long.” Bradly raised his hands. “I just want to talk. You owe me that.”

“We have nothing to say to each other.”

“That’s where you’re dead wrong,” Bradly said.

“I’m sorry, sir. But we’re closed.” Weston took a step forward, putting a protective arm in front of her. “I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

“And who the fuck are you?” Bradly tilted his head.

Standing behind Weston, she reached into her pocket and snagged her phone. Pressing her head against his back, she quickly texted Zeke. She hated doing it this late, but she had made a promise to him— and to herself— that if and when Bradly showed up again, she wouldn’t make the same mistake she had last time. Dealing with him on her own was dangerous. Calling the police only served to piss him off and he’d never pay the price anyway.

She thought cutting a deal with him would make him go away, but it hadn’t. The little book she’d taken was the only leverage she had over him and if she gave it back, she’d be toast. Giving it to the authorities wouldn’t gain her freedom; it would put her six feet under. No one knew she had it. Not Zeke and his crew. Bradly suspected, though he couldn’t prove it, nor would she let him know. As long as it wasn’t in Bradly’s hands, she believed she’d be safe. That he wouldn’t kill her because he’d worry if and when that book would surface.

However, once he had it, all bets were off.

“The man telling you to leave,” Weston said.

“You have no authority over me. Now if you don’t mind. Haven and I have some unfinished business.” Bradly boldly stepped closer.

Weston inched back, crunching the glass under his feet. “This is the last time I’m going to ask you nicely.”

“Are you threatening me?” Bradly asked.

“Just do us all a favor and turn around and leave. That way I won’t have to forcibly push you through that door.” Weston’s tone was level and calm, but there was a bite to his words that made Haven shiver.

“This doesn’t concern you, whoever the fuck you are,” Bradly said. “Haven. This is getting ridiculous. I’m tired of playing this game. Come on. Let’s go.”

“I’m not going anywhere with you. Not now. Not ever,” she said with as much conviction as she could manage.

“You have something that belongs to me, so yes, you are.” Bradly lunged forward, doing his best to shove Weston out of the way.

Weston pushed her as he grabbed Bradly by the arm, twisting it behind his back and thrusting his body against the bar. “I warned you.”

“You fucking asshole. You have no idea who you’re messing with.” Bradly turned, swinging his free arm, cocking a fist, hurling it toward Weston’s face.

Haven gasped, covering her mouth, stumbling back into a table, knocking over a few chairs. Weston ducked, dodging the punch. He tackled Bradly to the floor, pressing his face to the hardwood. “You fucked with the wrong man.” He hoisted Bradly to his feet, holding both his hands behind his back.

The front door opened. Zeke and Rocky came storming into the room.

“If I ever see you in this bar or near Haven again, you’ll live to regret it.” Weston hauled Bradly past Zeke and Rocky, shoving him to the curb. “That’s not a threat. It’s a promise. Now, fuck off.” He pulled the door closed, locked it, and leaned against the wood frame. “Who the hell was that guy?”

“A complete douchebag,” Rocky said, racing to Haven’s side. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, thanks to Weston.” She let out a long breath.

“I shouldn’t have left you.” Zeke pulled her in for a big brotherly hug. “I should have known that his silence these last few days didn’t mean anything.”

“Did he hurt you?” Rocky asked.

She shook her head. “Weston didn’t let him get anywhere near me.”
Jen Talty. ARC – Searching for Haven – Jen Talty (Kindle Locations 209-277). Kindle Edition.

Keeping Haven safe is forefront in everyone’s mind and Weston really is the logical choice to watch over her. Haven needs to open up about what happened with Bradly and it’s Weston she finally confides in.

Turns out everything is far more complicated that it appears on the outside. Plus, many things intertwine with other issues.

Neither one of them expect the chemistry between them to go anywhere but that pretty much goes from simmer to sizzle rather quickly.

I really enjoyed this addition to the Fallport Search and Rescue series. I hope there will be more.

A dedicated animal behaviorist, Kirby Carrington finds herself caught in a dangerous situation while studying gorillas in the Congo. When tragedy strikes her team, leaving her assistant injured and the rest of her colleagues dead, Kirby’s life is suddenly at stake.

Desperate for help, Kirby reaches out to her long-time friend and ex-Navy SEAL, Wyatt Bixby. Wyatt has secretly harbored feelings for Kirby for years but has always respected her desire for a casual relationship. However, when he learns of the danger she faces from ruthless poachers, he realizes that he must step up and protect her at all costs, even if it means risking his own heart.

As Kirby and Wyatt navigate the treacherous terrain of the Congo, they must not only outsmart the poachers but also confront their own emotions. With each passing moment, their bond grows stronger, and they discover a love that cannot be denied. Together, they embark on a daring mission to ensure their own survival.

As this book opens, Wyatt Bixby and his friend and fellow partner Booker, are exiting the helicopter, Wyatt forgets to shift his weight to his left knee and that sends a bit of pain through his arthritic right knee. The real problem Wyatt has is with migraines and post traumatic vertigo. Booker often helps him when he sees the signs, water and his pills first and foremost. Nausea first, then the stars, blurry vision and then vertigo. Fortunately, he was responding well to the medication and hadn’t had a migraine that required a dark room and rest. As they wait for the medication to fully take hold, Booker brings the conversation to Kirby.

Kirby and Wyatt have a long-time ‘thing’, they get together every time she’s in the US. Wyatt wants to better define their relationship but he’s afraid she might end it. He didn’t want to lose her friendship as well as their ‘thing’. She is the only woman in years to command his full attention, she’s dedicated to the study of Gorilla’s in the Congo and has been there for five years. Tonight, she’s coming to visit for a few days before visiting her family for a couple before returning to Africa.

Kirby Carrington is in the US to get supplies, but someone messed up the order. She hated that it was Ben who messed it up, he usually was very meticulous. It only delayed her until evening though, and she boarded a later flight to Wyatt. Her book was finished, and her grant would be ending in six-months. She has time to figure out what she will do next. She’s considering the wolves in Yellowstone, that would put her closer to Wyatt.

Once at Wyatt’s she takes a hot shower, and as they get to bed he asks about the problem with the supplies and also brings up poachers before other things take over their minds.

Wyatt is woken up by the obnoxious sound of a ringing phone, but it isn’t his, it’s Kirby’s. The connection is terrible and she could barely make out some of what Ben was trying to say. Tav, team, bloody then the call cut off.

Wasting no time, Wyatt puts on coffee, calls Booker and Stone then gets ready to leave for his office with Kirby. Their equipment is superior to most so they should be able to find out what’s happening.

They set up quickly and make the call, it had been about an hour since Ben’s call. Ben is hurt and weak, and they ascertain he’s away from the camp, get a general location and tell him they’ll get a team to him. He tries to tell them it’s too late, but they won’t be deterred.

This is a favorite scene.

“Ben,” Stone said with a commanding voice. “I’m Wyatt’s boss. We’ve got connections and we’ll get someone in the area as soon as possible. It won’t be long. Team Eagle will be wheels up within the hour and we’ll investigate the situation. Whatever happened there and whoever did this, we’ll make sure justice is served.” Stone nodded. “Call your men.” He pointed at Booker. “The entire team is going in.”

“Yes, sir.” Booker nodded.

“Wyatt, get me Ben’s location. I’ll start making calls. There has to be someone we know close who can extract Ben and get him safely to the nearest American hospital.” Stone turned on his heel and marched out of Wyatt’s office.

“Did you hear that, Ben? It’s going to be okay,” Kirby said with her heart in her throat.

Nothing but static echoed over the comms.

“Ben,” she repeated.

Still silence.

Tears burned a path down her cheek.

“We’ve got to roll.” Wyatt lifted her from the chair. “I’ve got a charter plane lined up for us.”

“Already?” She shifted her gaze. “How’d you do that so fast?”

“It’s what we do.” Wyatt took her by the hand. “We leave in forty minutes. Booker will still need to use our contacts to get us a helicopter and a guide once we land at the Kinshasa N’djili airport. But we can do all that in the air.”

“I’m your guide,” Kirby said.

Wyatt narrowed his eyes.

“I’ve lived there for five years. I know it like the back of my hand. We’ll get there faster with me as our guide. Hiring a local, they will want to play it safe. They will take the long way to get there. Plus, I know an area closer to the site you can set down a bird where no one else would dare do it, except maybe you guys.”

Booker glanced over his shoulder. “Is that because of the terrain or something else?”

“Mostly the terrain, but if poachers hit us and they see helicopters flying in, they could see that as a threat. Once we land, it’s still a good two-hour hike to where we need to go. I know better than anyone how to get there.”

“Maybe we should get two birds,” Booker said. “Especially since we’re taking the entire team and we’ll have three pilots. We might be able to find a closer place to set the choppers down.” Kirby shook her head. “The closest town is three hours away. We hike down from the mountains where we have a place to store a Jeep. From there, we drive to town. The only place that would be safe is the clearing where we keep our vehicles and other things. The area is remote. The locals are used to me, but they won’t like you. Even landing there could be seen as hostile.”

“Stone will make sure the area is as secure as possible by the time we get there. I will need the coordinates for that clearing.” Wyatt led her out of the office and down the hallway toward the main entrance of the building. The Aviation office was located not far outside of West Yellowstone at the Brotherhood Protectors private airstrip. “But two birds is a good idea. We won’t be able to make a plan until we know what we’re dealing with.”

“That could be in the air on the way over.” Booker looped an arm around Callie’s hip. “There’s an Army base not too far from that part of the Congo. There are always joint missions run out of there. I’m sure there’s some special forces team that Stone will be able to call on.”

Kirby swallowed the thick lump that had formed in her throat. It didn’t move. “Ben had been scheduled to go on this run,” she whispered.

Wyatt paused midstep. “When and why did you make the change?”

“My grant is up in six months. I had two meetings. One to meet my replacement. He’ll be joining me in two months. The second was with the publisher for my book.”

“That doesn’t answer my question about when you made the decision to go instead of Ben?” Wyatt stared at her with his intense dark eyes. His forehead crinkled like it always did when that brain of his was working overtime. “Because you didn’t tell me you were coming until two weeks ago.”

“It was a day before I messaged you,” she admitted. “I could have put off the publisher or done a Zoom call. I could have even waited for my replacement to show up in the Congo, but I didn’t think Ben had a reason to be Stateside. I did.” She held his gaze.

“Why didn’t you tell me about your grant?” Wyatt asked. “And the fact that you’d be coming home in less than a year?”

That was a fucking loaded question and one she had no idea how to answer. So many things in her life were up in the air. When she’d graduated from college, she had no direction, thanks to an ex-boyfriend whom she allowed to strip her of her dignity and confidence. The only thing she knew she wanted to do was travel and study various animals and their relationship with community. “Because I don’t know what’s next and my work with the gorillas isn’t done.” She wanted to say more, but this was not the moment to do it.

Wyatt arched a brow but thankfully didn’t say another word.

“Did you have any other communications with people about your return?” Booker asked.

She shook her head. “My family doesn’t even know I’m here. I was going to surprise them.” She left out the part where her dad got pissed off over Wyatt. It wasn’t about her being involved with a man; it was the fact that she didn’t define who Wyatt was to her and that annoyed her father because he didn’t control the situation. Even though he’d never met him, he didn’t like Wyatt because her father believed if Wyatt wasn’t man enough to come around, he wasn’t the kind of person she belonged with, but that wasn’t the reason she didn’t bring Wyatt home to meet her folks.

They didn’t understand.

And truthfully, neither did she anymore, but not for the same reasons.

“So, what you’re saying is other than a message to me through an app on your cell phone while you in a neighboring town, no one outside of your team knows you’re in the States?” Wyatt let out a long breath.

She nodded.

“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” Booker raked a hand across the top of his head.

“Fuck, yeah,” Wyatt muttered.

“Someone want to fill me in on what the hell the Bobbsey Twins are mulling over in their shared brain?” Kirby glanced between the two men, before glaring at Callie, who shrugged.

“Don’t look at me,” Callie said. “I’ve never understood their connection and trust me, I’ve tried.”

“You put poachers in jail, Kirby.” Wyatt yanked open the main doors and pressed his hand on the small of her back. “While I’m glad you turned everything over to the authorities and the bastards were caught, I warned you it wasn’t over.”

“Poachers are part of the Congo. There’s more than one group. They pop up all the time.” She picked up the pace, heading toward his Jeep.

“Maybe so, but I did a little digging after the last time you were here, and that ring wasn’t a small-time operation,” Wyatt said. “They might be in jail, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have friends and won’t seek revenge.”

“Are you saying they were coming for me?” For five years she’d learned to live with a heavy dose of fear and not just from the fact her gorillas could have killed her if they wanted to. But poachers were always a threat. So were some of the locals. While most appreciated and respected her work, there were some who didn’t. She was the interloper and a handful of people made it clear they didn’t want her there.

“That’s a real possibility.” Wyatt rolled his neck. “Maybe you should stay right here. Or go to your parents’ while we sort this out.”

She poked him dead center in his chest. “Over my fucking dead body. That’s my team. My gorillas. They are all my responsibility. If you think I’m going to sit on my ass— here in the States— you’ve got another thing coming, buddy.” She jogged around the hood of the Jeep. “Callie, sorry to be taking your boyfriend away. We’ll have dinner the next time I’m in town.”

“You bet your butt we will.” Callie waved. “You boys be safe.” She gave Booker a big kiss. “Watch your back and make sure Wyatt doesn’t do anything stupid.”

By the time they get to Africa, Ben has been retrieved and was at a base hospital in critical condition. Kirby still wanted, no needed to go to the camp to see for herself what had gone down there. On the plane to the closest village, Kirby finds her grant has been cancelled and she’s informed not to return to the camp. Too late now they were already there.

Once at the camp things get complicated, local authorities, a US ambassador, a DEA agent, a news crew and a directive to leave in 24 hours. Not that they plan on listening, but they have to appear to be.

Kirby finds an unexpected ally in the reporter Sally Weidmore, speaking from her own experience she advices Kirby to tell Wyatt how she really feels about him. Coincidentally Booker has given Wyatt the same advice.

This is an action packed, hold your breath tale, with gorillas, wolves, intrigue, suspense, romance, sizzle and so much more!

Of course, I started with this book so now I have to go back and read the rest of the team’s stories. I can’t wait to see what Jen comes up with next in the Brotherhood Protectors world.

Dante and his team are headed to Jupiter, Florida for a fishing trip. At least that’s what their telling everyone. In reality they have a plan to get their former teammate, Beck, out of a very sticky and dangerous problem. Just to add some additional problems, Dante and Beck’s sister Kaia have had a thing for a couple of years but haven’t shared that information with anyone.

As Dante and Caleb drive to Beck’s trailer near the marina, Caleb infers he knows exactly what’s going on between Dante and Kaia. They also need to be sure she doesn’t know of their plans with her brother. They don’t want her involved.

This is a favorite scene.

Dante wasn’t exactly sure how he felt about Kaia, other than he couldn’t stop thinking about her when he wasn’t with her, and he worried about her brother pulling her down into his shit. On the one hand, Dante wished Beck would be more upfront with Kaia about the problems her father had faced before he died, and how much their dad had owed the Russells. However, Dante’s instincts were to protect Kaia, which meant keeping her in the dark about her father’s financial troubles and her brother’s involvement.

But when her father died, Dante had made a promise to Beck to never breathe a word to Kaia about how bad it had gotten. And Dante was nothing without his SEALs’ honor.

“She’s not the kind of person anyone messes with. I mean, she looks like a lady, all sweet and gorgeous, but watch out, she’ll eat you for dinner.”

“I’m married. You don’t have to warn me off. Now, Walli, he’s the one you need to worry about. Or maybe Morty. We know he’s got no shame.”

“When do they get in?” Dante decided to redirect the conversation.

“Around midnight,” Holiday said. “They will meet us at the docks before this shit goes down.”

Dante stared out the window. Having grown up in Seattle, he wasn’t accustomed to the bright sunshine pelting his eyes, but he loved how the warm rays heated his skin. There was nothing but tall palm trees stretching toward the blue sky. A few white, puffy clouds floated over the ocean as they got off the highway and headed toward the sleepy little seaside town. In the distance, Dante could see the Lighthouse.

It almost felt as though he’d returned home.

“Does Kaia have any idea?” Holiday asked.

“I promised Beck we wouldn’t tell her anything, and he thinks she’s oblivious, but she knows more than she lets on.”

“She’s never talked to you about it?”

“Only that she’s worried about Beck, and I’ve shared the same concerns.” It’s hard not to when he shared a bed with Kaia. And he hated lying to her about what he thought was at the root of Beck’s troubled soul, though he did tie it to their father’s father’s financial problems and then his sudden death last year.

“I can’t believe how bad things got for Beck,” Holiday said. “He made it look like he had it all taken care of.”

“He got stuck between a rock and a hard place,” Dante said. “I’m just glad he finally called for backup.”

Holiday punched the gas, heading north past the Pier. Beck lived in a trailer right on the river a few miles up the road, walking distance from the marina where he kept his charter boats.

He’d also managed to purchase a surf shop, and Dante wondered where Beck had gotten the money for the third charter boat and the new shop. Things just seemed too good to be true, and Beck didn’t appear to be the happy-go-lucky man he’d been before he left the military.

Now, Dante knew why. His pulse got caught in his throat the second they pulled into the driveway.

The beautiful Kaia, her long hair pulled into a ponytail at the nape of her neck, sat on the front porch of the modular home. She’d twisted the tail over her shoulder and ran her fingers through the strands, her nose in a book. She glanced up and smiled, then set her reading material to the side and stood. Her toned legs went on forever. Her white T-shirt with a picture of a turtle on the front didn’t cover her stomach, showing off a taut midriff and a silver belly button ring.

“Seriously. Don’t say a single word to her about our plan. She’ll either want in on it, or she’ll be up my ass all night about it, and I’ll never be able to sneak out,” Dante whispered. “And I promised Beck she would be kept in the dark.”

“Understood.”

Dante did his best not to let his gaze linger on her voluptuous breasts, but he couldn’t help himself. He opened his mouth to say something, anything.

But all he did was grunt.

He’d been all over the world and had had his share of beautiful women, but no one could hold a candle to Kaia— and she was way out of his league.

She lifted her sunglasses to the top of her head. “Look at what the cat dragged in,” she said.

“It’s been a while,” Dante finally managed, keeping up the ruse that he and Kaia hadn’t seen each other only a few months ago. She kissed Dante on the cheek. Her hot lips scorched his skin. She squeezed his biceps. “Nice of you to make the trip down, Holiday.”

“Wouldn’t miss it,” Holiday said.

“So, what’re the sleeping arrangements?” Dante asked, keeping up the ruse for her sake.

“Unfortunately, Beck only has two guest rooms. Holiday, you get the bigger one with the queen bed. Walli and either Morty or Riker get the one with two beds. The other one gets the couch here or the couch at my place. Dante, you get my guest room.”

“You are a lifesaver.” He smiled, dropping his rucksack onto the porch. He pulled his cell out of his back pocket and quickly sent Beck a text, letting him know that they had arrived and would head over to the docks shortly.

Beck responded immediately with a thumbs-up emoji.

“He’s done.” Dante waved his cell. “Why don’t you head over? I’ll drop my stuff at Kaia’s and meet you there.”

Holiday arched a brow. “Seriously?”

“I’ll be fifteen minutes behind you.”

“You better be.” Holiday slapped Dante on the back. “We wouldn’t want people to get the wrong idea.”

Dante waited until Holiday was out of sight before pulling Kaia into his arms. “I guess we haven’t been as discreet as I thought because it seems Holiday and the guys are onto us.”

“My brother acts like he doesn’t know.” She wrapped her arms around his shoulders, slipping her tongue between his lips. “But I suspect he might.”

When it came to sex, Kaia was certainly the best he’d ever had. He couldn’t imagine it getting any better. And if he were honest, he didn’t want it to get any better— at least not with anyone else.

If he never experienced anyone else, he would actually be fine with that.

A reality he struggled to accept.

He ran his hands up and down her back, letting his fingers dance over her soft skin. Whether she knew it or not, she’d helped him get through a few tough nights during his last deployment. “Does it bother you that I don’t want—?”

I don’t want my brother to know. He gets weird when I have flings with his friends, so it’s best if we just keep things under the radar.”

Dante leaned against the railing, resting his hands on her hips. “Have you dated anyone while I was gone?”

Kaia shook her head. “A few friends have tried to fix me up, but I wasn’t feeling it.”

“You are allowed to do whatever you want when I leave. We don’t have exclusive rights or anything.” The second the words left Dante’s lips, he regretted them, but being in a full-time relationship wasn’t something he’d ever done before.

Not just because of his job, but because his heart started pounding at the mere thought of being with a woman for more than a few months.

Except for Kaia. All bets were off where she was concerned. If he could say he had any real feelings for a woman, it would be Kaia.

“That sounds like you’re having second thoughts.”

“No. I’m actually jealous of the idea of you being with another man. But I don’t have the right to tell you that you can’t.” Jesus, he sounded like a fucking lovesick idiot. “I’m only in town for a few days, and I’ll be deployed again for months. I don’t think it’s fair to ask you to sit around and wait for me when I don’t even know if I’m…” He glanced at the sky. “I’m not very good at this.”

“No. You’re not.” She cupped his cheek. “Are you saying you want more?”

“Do you?”

“I asked first.”

He groaned. “Kaia, I want more, but I don’t know what that looks like.”

She smiled. “I like the idea of more.”

This mission of theirs goes FUBAR before it even really gets started. Beck knew he’d been targeted and in spite of their efforts to thwart the inevitable Beck ends up dead.

When Kaia realizes that it was their plan to put an end to Beck’s involvement with the Russell boys drug running business, she flips out. She blames them for her brother’s death and wants nothing more to do with Dante and his friends.

Plenty of ups and downs in this intriguing tale as Dante works his way back into Kaia’s life.
